city contains more
than i can ask for, yet,
it lacks what's needed
to keep soul afloat.
mystic healing retreat;
faux redemption
under nourishment
from nameless stream.
i plead with the essence
to allow me to recede
from hazy fixations
decorating the mundane.
can't tell if the structure
is natural, or exists
on a predicate: that we
remain in darkness,
deceived by faintest
sliver of light.
we'd be strung up if they knew
of unhatched plots
born from dereliction.
can we blame them
for being so obscene,
when so many
clamor to be free?
talons sink deeper
when the nest is threatened.

Dirty Beaches, Lord Knows Best I Badlands, 2011

These highly self-sufficient musicians favour their own path, i.e. they do have their own idiom, based upon their influences molded into the surprising shapes. However – this is my theory –, they develop their own peculiar strand of their idols, since they don't have to compromise. Dirty Beaches, for instance, was a solo project by Alex Zhang Hungtai that filtered the latter's affinity for the rockabilly into something quite weird. One feels like one caught a station at the edge of a bombed out town, where an oldies jukebox took over the radio and no one remains certain what the deal here is, but the thing does sound fun. Yes, David Lynch would dig this, so I'm not surprised Mr. Hungtain worked a bit on the third season of Twin Peaks afterwards.

Post Punk and Trips to China
Dirty Beaches = Alex Zhang Hungtai is a Montréal musician, who’s work bridges the past with the present. The music is a combination lo fi, post-punk, no wave, ambient, and noise. His sonic works link Berlin, Singapore and Beijing together. Recollections of his Father, and influenced Alex’s work. Alex explores several ports painting an auditory landscape heard from within a dive bar. While Water Park OST has a more ambient, and atmospheric quality.
I have fond memories of listening to him while studying on Oahu, and walking around Chinatown on the weekend.
“But I don't really have a place where I can say I was born and raised. For me, home is a collage of all these different fractured landscapes that I try to piece together.” - Alex Zhang Hungtai

Rose Mansion Analog of Beijing Includes Hot & Cold, Dirty Beaches (Alex Zhang Hungtai), Soviet Pop’s oscillator punk sounds, and others with a post punk influenced golden hum. Relentless percussion, and the warmth of an imaginary dive bar, echo from their recordings.
More recently, Chinese musicians influenced by post punk include Re-TROS, featuring a crisper sound, with fast paced percussion, and strings.
American post punk groups worth noting include The Soft Moon, lead Luis Vasquez, out of Oakland. He recently released Exister and Body of Errors. The works feature a combination of post-punk, minimal wave, darkwave, industrial rock.
I find these sounds go really well with Brutalist architecture.
