COLORADO TRIP // 09/06

This morning we slept in until around 8:30-ish, then got ready to check out at 11. Once 11 rolled around, I dropped the key off at the front office and we headed into town.

We walked up and down the town center occasionally going into some shops to buy some things. I bought a glass strawberry, a ceramic mushroom, a mug, two stickers, a magnet, candy, earrings, and a pin. After I was done buying knick-knacks we stopped at a coffee shop called Kind Coffee and got large iced chai lattes and two bags of chips, then sat outside by the river to enjoy them.

Once we were finished with our lattes, we headed toward Boulder, leaving Estes Park where we found it.

Entering Boulder, we stopped at Metaburger for lunch. I got a buffalo chicken sandwich and Matheus got the deluxe chicken sandwich. They were really good and I'm glad we went there because I had always heard good things about them!

After lunch we walked next door to Trader Joe's and grabbed some snack foods - pineapple, grapes, chips, and pb&j bars. Then we hit up a dispensary. The woman who helped us was super nice and super helpful when it came to finding vegan edibles. I got 4 THC sodas with 10 mg of THC each along with 1 lemonade with 100 mg of THC, and two pre-rolled joints. Matheus got THC powder packets that dissolve in liquid that are 10 mg each - 1000 mg total (10 packets), a 100 mg strawberry drink, and 2 pre-rolled joints. We're planning to smoke in a park somewhere per the advice of the woman at the dispensary, but I still think we'll have leftovers.

Once we finally got into Denver we checked into our second hotel – Hotel Teatro – at 3:30 and headed up to our room which was very big with two bathrooms, a living room, and bedroom.

We chilled until 6:15, then headed downtown to get dinner at Everyday Pizza, which was a new completely plant based pizza place. We walked down a street where a hockey player was taking photos with the Stanley Cup his team won. I don't know who he was or what Denver's hockey team is because I don't watch sports, but good for him!

The vibe at the pizza place was absolutely gentrification, but I tried to enjoy my time rather than nit-pick. We ordered potato disco bites, which were just fried fingerling potatoes with tzatziki sauce, and a crushed tomato pizza which was AMAZING! It was so flavorful and the crust was cooked to perfection.

Once we were done eating, I ordered a Lyft to the theater production which was in a warehouse on the other side of town. We got there and were told to put our items in a secured locker while we went through the experience.

Upon entering the interactive play, we started out in a room with a lot of doors and were told to put on name tags with our new names—my new name was China and Matheus' was Tom. After introducing ourselves under our new names to the group we were in, we entered a door in the hall of memories and walked into a funeral parlor where we were attending "our friend David"'s funeral. An actor popped out of the casket, and the show began! We followed "David" through their mind and memories and in each part there was an illusion. It was a really neat experience!

Once we got back to the hotel we partook in some of the edibles we bought and then took a shower to wash off the day, and then watched some of the new My Hero Academia movie until I fell asleep.

His mother was young when he had him so his father’s involvement in his life petered out before the age of five and he was raised primarily by his grandmother. ✸ His teen years lacked guidance and Simon spent most of his formative years sneaking out and partying letting his grades suffer but he’d done enough mushrooms by this point that he realized he did not want to be another cog in the machine that was higher education. He’d suppose that his only coming out event would’ve been when his grandmother caught him on top of a guy as Natural Born Killers played in the background.

Before our trip, we agreed on the ‘one-drink-one-bar-rule’ - a rule that we slowly abandoned as the night progressed. After what felt like a 12 hour commute from YVR, I arrived in Penn Station, starved and parched. A quick change and a touch up later, I finally made it to dinner at WildAir: a hip, trendy, wine-focused Lower East Side restaurant from the boys who opened the Michelin-starred Contra. The food menu is a fairly simple: tartare, mushrooms, clams, and allegedly out-of-this-world fried squid. The wine list, on the other hand, is extensive and edgy. If you’re into the whole natural, skin-contact wine situation like we are, you’ll probably see us there again with a bottle of Susucaru, snacking on some fried squid. A couple blocks down from Wildair, is Bar Goto. A cozy Japanese bar with a MOOD AF lighting, brought to you by Kenta Goto, a Pegu club alumn. The man himself made me a plum Sazerac the last time I was in. It easily became one of those cocktails you crave over and over again. So naturally, I got one, and another one for good measure. The whisky finally kicked in. With a little buzz and a much better mood, we made it to Death and Company and put our name on the list. Wait time was about an hour and 30 mins, enough for a cocktail or two at Angel’s Share – or so we thought. It’s another 45 mins wait for us, but luckily, they have a sister bar next door that’s much less crowded, a little brighter, and slightly more peaceful. Our new friend Ryan, who’s bartending that night made me a ‘Bewitched’, a riff on Old Fashioned with grilled and spiced truffle-infused whisky, cognac, Kokuto syrup, bitters and Kaffir lime leaf. It’s as decadent as it sounds. Stunning mixture of flavour, texture, and aroma on each indulgent sip. It was on point. It’s finally time for us to get to Death and Co. Their Manhattan’s been calling my name since September last year. Everything about Death and Co’s Manhattan is perfect: the bourbon, the vermouth, the ratio, the temperature, just everything. Say what you want (I actually got into an argument on this) but this, is the best Manhattan in Manhattan. The night spiralled down the rabbit hole after the next drink, a Boulevardier - I remember we had two more cocktails there, but I can’t, for the sake of me, remember what they were. I know there was gin, somewhere, somehow. I won’t bore you with the details of our challenging journey home so let’s skip to the morning after - two bottles of Pedialyte, two advils, and a hot shower later. With a tummy filled with steak, scallion salad, and rice, we decided to walk our way back to the West Village - seemed crazy far, but at that point, it was necessary. We made it to Dante, who recently crowned #1 bar in the world, so naturally it was very busy. The apero-focused bar is famous for their ‘Negroni Sessions’, which is impressive and can be adventurous. If you’re in the mood to splurge (we weren’t lol), their vintage martini is absolutely worth the $65 price tag (the Plymouth gin from ‘60s alone is drool-worthy). I, decided to go for the Olivette: a savoury, brine-y, less serious cousin of the vesper. We then visited Katana Kitten. Another bar in the village that scored a spot in this year’s 50 Best Bars, number 14 to be exact. It’s a fun (the owner Masahiro Urushido is also quite a legend), non pretentious neighbourhood bar with playful and whimsical cocktails. I, somehow, managed to meet Patrick for coffee, had a bite of a mushroom toast, and stayed alive. I made it back to the hotel just in time for a much-needed nap before check out and a trip to Williamsburg for lunch. It was rough. I kept telling myself another lie of “I’m never drinking again” for the 30 minute subway ride to Peter Luger. Peter Luger is a classic: steak (yes, another one), burger, with a side of onion, tomatoes, and fries. We then gathered enough energy to get to DUMBO for a picture of two (hundreds) before saying goodbye to each other - sad. I zipped back downtown for a meeting. A VERY EXCITING MEETING. Zanib joined us later that night for a negroni, and of course, I had to refresh my almost empty drink. Another friend Erik joined us for one more drink. Things started to get blurry real quick, I recall there was a Manhattan, a Brooklyn, a rum cocktail of some sort, fried chicken, and a Macallan 12 at one point before we’re back in the car for a nightcap at Blacktail. A tiki-focused sister bar of Dead Rabbit. We’re welcomed by a pink slushy daiquiri, and the bartender made me a delicious, stirred rum cocktail to sip on - don’t ask what it’s called. I finally tapped out and made my way back to Brooklyn. With close to zero voice, I got to Newark and flew back to Vancouver via. Denver - yes, I made a stop to Death and Co for a Sazerac-esque cocktail called the Uncanny Valley and a lobster ceviche. Trust me when I say it’s not as simple as you suggest. First, I would have to really sit down and figure out what I want. Second, it doesn’t matter what I want, or what I think is best. I’m a realist, not a dreamer. I’m forced to live an existence knowing what logic & thought goes into what I want. Months down the road, everybody else will get to the same page where I started. Thirdly, as for her...she wants me to get away from the Office in which I work. She is convinced there’s a toxicity located there. She thinks somehow once we’re in Colorado it will all be solved. It won’t be.

Perhaps someday something will change. It will not be easy for me to just leave this company and be able to do the same thing somewhere else. I have too much invested in where I am. My next move will need to be either out of the Profession or a serious downgrade in responsibility and salary.

There is no Me time, you time, us time....there is only time and a perpetual list of things to do and get done. There is no ‘off the clock’ - the clock is always on. There is no ‘drop everything’ and take a vacation. There are so many factors intertwined that vacations need to be planned. (Just has one last December). There is no getaway when we can, unless it’s dog friendly. There is no boarding our dog anywhere - his breed is banned lots of places. There’s only in house services (she’s booked a year in advance) and a few friends that could take him.

Up until a few months ago I pretty much thought it was over, meaning my marriage. Also in February/ March there was a big shake up at The Office which lightened my load although only temporarily. I was in a better mood, now it’s back to Shit ball crazy. I can turn on a dime, but not everybody in my life can. Things went sour again. We are 2 months behind our schedule for doing what we’re doing right now. She also has the bright idea to go and live with my Father to help him out for a few months.

The reality is, I want to sell and immediately move out West. I want us to find a place to rent for a year or so, that either has enough space or is close to an area where I can work out of a coffee shop etc. I want there to be a separation between work and home. I want everything to run smoothly and I don’t want to have to get involved. I want to actually get some money’s worth out of our gym memberships. I want to take an active part at home since I really haven’t in the last 6 years. I want be able to carve out time to ride a spin cycle first thing in the morning, but restful sleep is more important right now. I want to be able to drink socially and have a good time, not just alone at my desk or on a train just to numb the pain. I want to buy myself a new bicycle (for the last 3 years now), but other things were more important. I want to keep my Director level position now and next year, and not get forced into some independent contractor status. I want to head up a Denver Office like he and I talked about, but I’m keeping an eye on the turbulent economy and next year’s mushroom cloud of an election. I want to lose 30 pounds, but can’t put myself first to make that commitment. I want to not follow a plant based diet 100% of the time-since it’s difficult when I travel. For once, I want to not be the person that has to answer for, establish a solution, and problem solve for every little thing that comes up in work or home related issues. I want to not be the sole person capable of handling whatever is thrown at me. I want to stop spinning all the plates on all the poles. I want to stop juggling the flaming machetes whilst trying to cut fruit. I want my wife to go back in time when I first met her, when she was 24 and had the confidence to knock out some guy at a bar that was being stupid. She clocked him with a right cross. I want times to be simpler, the way they used to be. I want the world to slow down a little - not because I want to get off this ride, but because I know the benefits of slowing down and honing your craft. I want there to be peace on Earth and goodwill towards all people.

The answer is no, I cannot tell her what I want. I fear I want to much. I fear that it will only cause more anxiety thinking she has to provide everything I ask for. I fear that what I want is a reality some aren’t willing to face or accept right now. I suspect they will feel differently in 2-3 months when we come the realization of what I wanted was where we ended up.

Until then, I think it’s best to let people get there on their own terms.

Denver - February 2022

Thursday, February 3rd 

I headed to the Milwaukee airport at 7:30 with a landing time in Denver shortly after noon. Emmett picked me up in my proclaimed location after I turned myself around in the airport. We made the traditional stop at Starbucks on our way back to the house. Emmett and Laine finished up their day's work as I relaxed on the sofa snuggled up to my niece, Hazelnut. 

We ate dinner at their favorite local Mexican restaurant, La Palmas 1. We were served phenomenal margaritas and I ordered the shrimp tacos. I would hands down order them again. After dinner, we returned to home to catch up on life over the last several months and give our stomachs a bit of time before heading out for a sweet treat. 

Our evening ended with a stop at Nuggs Ice Cream only a few minutes from their house. There are so many options I was eager to try, but decided on the PB&J that had strawberry jelly in it. Laine was pleased with her hot fudge sundae too. 

Friday, February 4th 

Our morning started with working all around. As Laine and Emmett met with their clients and interns. I spent the morning making appointments and on hold with Federal Loan servicing. Once all was finished we headed out to some brunch at Denver Breakfast Company. Laine ordered the Strawberry Shortcake, while Emmett and I split ours in half. We ordered the Dalia and Tomahawk. I must say the Dalia was a full win for me. 

After brunch we headed around to some thrift stores and local stops to fill our day. We planned to end our evening with bruschetta from Postino’s but after hearing over an hour wait we decided to head next door to Hopdoddy Burger Bar. Emmett and I ordered beers the size of our heads, and the shareable parmesan truffle fries for the table. Laine tried the vegetarian burger and was pleased with the results. I ordered the Magic Shroom Burger without the Mushrooms. It felt a little wrong, but boy was it a great decision. We enjoyed this stop so much we ended up coming back for our last meal together. 

Following dinner we stopped at Gelato Boy on the way back to the parking structure. I ordered a small dish that came with two flavors; selecting pistachio and caramel macchiato. Hands down I would order pistachio again and for sure skip the caramel macchiato. Laine and Emmett both ordered shakes. Laine’s was a chocolate brownie and Emmett’s was London Fog which was surprisingly amazing! 

Saturday, February 5th

My morning started with my first ever Dutch Bros. coffee ordering the bald eagle, while Hazelnut got to attend a visit to the vet.

 After a pup drop off at home, we headed back out to check out a local bakery we passed the day before called Good Bread. I have to point out, you know it is a good bakery with quality products when their closing time is set but when items sell out. We elected to split items picking up a passion fruit cruffin, almond croissant, and a baklava escargot. 

Before heading back to the house we stopped at Hot-Chick-A-Latte Denver with barista babes serving up coffee and Italian sodas. Laine ordered a raspberry italian soda that was incredible! 

Saturday afternoon Emmett and I headed to the tattoo shop. He ended up having three bands around his right wrist, and I had my birth flowers placed on my left forearm. 

Our evening wrapped up with dinner and cards at Mom and Libby’s house for the evening. 

Sunday, February 6th 

After a long weekend of running around we took the morning off before heading out to brunch at Annie’s Cafe. I ordered the Snickerdoodle Latte and Skip’s Monte Cristo. Laine had Emily’s Grilled Cheese with Fries, while Emmett ordered the T-Bird substituting the pancakes for the Valentine’s Strawberry and Cream ones. It is confirmed that I will request to visit here again on my next adventure out to Denver as the food was incredible, and Mom promised me a good jalapeno margarita one day. 

We spent the afternoon driving into the mountains. 

Ending with dinner at Hopdoddy Burger Bar, where I ordered the exact same thing, and spent the rest of our time together talking at home.
