I've been thinking a lot recently about why the female nudity in Claymore doesn't bother me as much as it would in some other manga and I think I've figured it out.
There's actually three reasons for it. The first is the fact that none of them are ashamed of it. When it happens, the warriors just keep on doing what they've been up to previously (in most cases that would be fighting). They don't stop mid-battle to desperately try to cover up and "preserve dignity", they keep fighting whatever is coming at them and I think in that sense it's treated like most male nudity in the genre. The second reason is that none of it is sexual in nature (the only exception perhaps being Agatha, but even with her it was more sensual than outright sexual). They simply exist and that's it. And the third one is that we've also seen the male characters naked/shirtless almost every time they appeared (Isley-more times than I care to count, adult Raki-two times, Dauf-a few occasions as well and idk if it counts but Rigaldo's awakened form is fairly anthropomorphic and he was running around naked the entire time so..). The only ones we haven seen are the guys from the organization, but tbh I don't think anyone wants that.

Top 5 favorite tropes?
Becoming the Mask - When someone fakes an identity so long that they unknowingly become what they meant to imitate. It makes for the juiciest drama and feels.
Unholy Matrimony - When there's an evil fucked up couple that truly love each other and would do anything for each other despite their normally twisted morality. It adds so much depth to villains when done right and gives them a human side while still keeping them iconicly evil. Alice and Decus (Tales of Symphonia 2) and Dauf and Riful (Claymore) still live in my head rent free like over decade later.
Mayfly December Romance - I love the angst of it. Seeing the love and relationship evolve as one party grows older and reaches their death while the other stays the same is sweet agony. The idea of life being fleeting but love lasting long after one is gone gets me everytime. Especially if you throw in reincarnation to the mix.
Humanity is Infectious - When something inhuman, without human morals or emotions spends so much time with other they gain those emotions and morality that were once foreign to them. Bonus points if it ties into Mayfly December Romance and also forces the nonhuman character to think about mortality in a way that never really mattered to them until now.
Single Dad (preferably with facial hair) - I'm a whore

No. 9 Jean was strangely weak despite having awakened in a way Alicia does. She had half-awakened, much like Miria, Deneve, Clare, and Helen. All of them gained superior abilities in specific areas. Clare's sensing improved. Deneve's healing, etc.
Miria mentions at the end of the Paburo hunt that they can all easily stand against a single digit. So why hadn't Jean, who went the closest to 100% release, experience changes in her abilities? Alicia went from being able to damage Riful at 50%, to killing her without receiving any damage, in seven years.
It's also interesting to note that Jean doesn't appear to have stitches or any kind of scarring or bleeding from her torso in chapter 47. In the battle against Dauf, she is naked with only a cloak. Her body is shadowed.
Side note: If Ophelia was around her, she'd be salivating at the scent of an awakened one.

I've been brewing and stewing these theories for a while now on why the Organization would switch from male to female warriors. While I've posted about this before, I thought I'd go more in depth and add some additional thoughts. Based on a variety of factors, I believe that this change was made as a political move.
*Spoilers for the later parts of the manga*
Shout out to @valenshawke for proofreading and input!
The Organization came from the mainland with Asarakam to conduct human experiments on the island with the intent to learn how to create living weapons to fight in its war. Now going around snatching up unsuspecting commoners wouldn't go over all that easy. Recruiting them outright isn't easy either. The best way to be able to do whatever you want is to build power and influence that is big enough for you to control an entire population.
Throughout the series we don't get a very concrete sense of politics or geography on the island in the main timeline. We see towns and cities that are rather separated and somewhat self governed but we don't hear anything about any sort of government or ruling body other than the Organization, which oversees the warriors primarily and, as we find out later, Yoma control. The exception to this being Rabona of course, which has never needed the Organization's assistance prior to the infiltration that Clare handles early in the series.
But we do see the ruins that suggest that there was some sort of ruling class on the island at some point. The hideouts that Riful uses are both large castles that are in disrepair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if there was a ruling class of some sort, who were they? What happened to them and the people that they ruled?
The Organization took them down, from the inside and outside. Kind of like this:
Suddenly the island and its people have a huge problem that doesn't affect just one group of people: The Yoma. Yoma are not the sort of problem you can just push aside because of politics or affiliations. The average human can't easily kill a Yoma, but one Yoma can easily kill a multitude of humans.
Then an organization comes forward with a solution to combat the Yoma. This group is composed of people with ties to the various governing bodies to band together so that they can handle the Yoma as a united front. They could have a rather nondescript name like “The Organization” that shows that they are not solely aligned with any one country/area.
Now the role of a warrior could be painted in a rather attractive light. A warrior becomes superhumanly strong, lives longer than the average human, and has a necessary role in society that would fight a unique problem. Kind of heroic depending on how you view it. You could offer this solution to future leaders, their families, their knights, etc. with a few successful test subjects to show off you can now recruit.
There would surely be a high cost from the Organization that would begin to deplete the wealth that these governments/royal families have acquired. As political power is poured into the Organization, these governing bodies begin to mean less and less to both the common people and across the political landscape as a whole.
The Organization wouldn't be above coordinating attacks from Yoma to destabilize any resistant groups. Aaand I wouldn't put it above any warriors with prior political standing to use their new position/power to take out an old enemy or competitor. Or aiding in a plan to infect noble families to justify getting rid of them.
Now having just men as warriors at first makes sense. The time period would probably align best with the armies and generals/knights being men. Though, as we see from the chapters showing the early warriors when Riful meets Isley, Dauf, and Rigardo, women would eventually be phased in for a brief mixed force, then to the main timeline the manga where the warriors are just women.
Since plenty of men would die either as warriors or fighting against the yoma initially, the switch to female warriors would have to be made eventually. This switch gives them power to control the Yoma, warrior, and human population. Effectively minimizing resistance on either front.
Now while canon does essentially say “it feels sexually good so men can't control themselves/are naturally too strong,” I don't really buy it. Especially given as Helen herself explained that when she surpassed her limits she felt the same arousal. The Organization is more than willing to push untrue narratives if it supports their actions.
Potentially the Organization could have gone a bit overboard on recruitment, many male warriors could've died fighting Yoma. They also could have tried to revive their old political structures or tried to form their own groups, which inevitably the Organization wouldn't want and so they'd have to discreetly be disposed of. And they could influence the public perception of male warriors being too power hungry to help justify getting rid of them as much as possible.
When it comes to the main timeline, the female warriors of the series are met with uncertainty, fear, and even hostility by the common people of the island, I believe this also is orchestrated. There is a benefit to creating division between warriors and commoners. And while the warriors are physically powerful, they don't have any sort of sway among commoners. Commoners are too wary of warriors and The Organization itself to risk any ties. So there's minimal communication and less risk of any sort of uprising.
To bring back an old Volume 1 line, Clare mentions that she had been trained to play certain roles, namely aristocrats or prostitutes. Now in the case of Rabona, this makes a lot of sense as she has to blend in for this particular mission and kill Yoma. But the skills she was trained in (and supposedly other warriors would be trained in) would make her and any other warrior an excellent tool of surveillance. If warriors weren't just used as a way to kill Yoma, but also to spy on commoners then this would create additional distrust.
Tumblr media
As for acting like an aristocrat, there could potentially still be some new leaders or those who claim to have royal blood. But the current ones would likely have to have close connections with the Organization, so they would serve as a puppet. And having a warrior ready to play a role to spy on them prevents them from plotting in a way that the organization doesn't approve of.
The Awakened Beings from this time the Organization would likely allow some to stay alive not just because they were too powerful, but to have some that could be used to keep the fear among commoners and warriors alike. When Miria, Clare, Helen, and Deneve are sent to hunt down an Awakened Being, they were canonically being sent to what was supposed to be their deaths. Same with the warriors in Pieta.
Speaking of Pieta, this actually brings me into an adjacent theory that a few notable Awakened Beings in the series are not only the most powerful awakened beings and early warriors, but that Isley, Rigaldo, and Riful in particular were royalty.
”Silver King” Isley,”Empress” Riful “of the West, and “Silver Eyed Lion King” Rigardo are the only Awakened Beings with any sort of titles associated with royalty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These titles could still be a reference to their influence as being powerful yoki wise or how they had leadership type roles amongst other Awakened Beings/Yoma… but no other awakened beings share this naming trait, even those who are similar in power, from the same era, or other Abyssals.
They themselves could have used these titles as a means to honor their lineage, and/or as a middle finger to the Organization after awakening. Frankly I like to think that they were once in a similar situation to Clare, Miria, Helen, and Deneve. Where they realized they had all surpassed their limits and or that the Organization did not want them alive. And in the face of that they chose to awaken purposefully to unlock their full potential. Aaand plan future havoc for the Organization.

Claymore Battle of the north
Tumblr media
The setup to this arc was honestly brilliant because it introduces the creatures of the abyss, gives us a target in Isley, and gives us information on Priscilla’s location. We meet Galatea and Jean and then Clare is on her way to Pieta after clashing with Dauf and Riful.
We see a glimpse of the situation in Pieta and there’s a large army of awakened beings and the current claymores fighting them are getting handled. When Rafaela shows up to assign clare the mission, the situation is in her benefit since the organization will give her a pardon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was heartwarming to see everyone had survived when they all met after the rest of the warriors were sleep. Helens fun gesture of greeting Clare is always nice to see and it showed that our group hadn’t changed much since the last awakened being.
Miria is the leader and she shows off her excellent leadership skills the entire arc. She breaks down that with these circumstances in trying to stop Isley and the awakened beings, they have 0 chance of success. She expands on the organization pulling the strings from afar.
Tumblr media
The first battle with the awakened beings is super important because they made the first move. This forced the squad leaders and the other members on the defensive early on until they got comfortable fighting an awakened being. Many were injured but no deaths occurred.
Tumblr media
Eventually the claymores got back on the offensive. Miria’s reasoning for splitting the teams was genius to equally distribute experience of fighting an awakened being across the warriors. This also improved their teamwork and familiarity with fighting together.
I like when Undine presses Miria about her decision as a leader. It makes the characters human that not everyone will follow her orders with their head down, it also is important that other strong leaders among this squad of 24 back her up, like wind cutter flora.
After the first battle it’s pretty obvious that there is no escape to this situation. The organization backed the warriors into an unfavorable situation and now it up to them to face despair and death.
Tumblr media
I really like Deneve and Undine’s relationship. All claymores are cut from the same cloth, All warriors have experienced loss so they cling to something else or each other. In undine’s case it’s the sword of a fallen warrior. Undine is insecure but puts on a strong facade. Deneve is one of the most logical and important members of the group. She feels sorrow and sadness but has to keep everyone else up too, if one is weeping, she has to put them back on their feet. Deneve values sacrifices (due to her past) and making the death of someone count.
Deneve’s sympathy for Undine’s situation fuels her vengeance. It’s honestly really fitting that she now carries on Undine’s 2 sword style as an homage to her and respect for her captain. Deneve has a strong resolve and fights as the proof of Undine’s existence. I really enjoyed the sparring match between Clare and Flora. It was interesting seeing another warrior with a speedy but similar technique to Clare. Flora gave up the trivial matter for their fight and they carried on as warriors sharing the battlefield.
Tumblr media
Raki’s appearance was good in pairing him with Isley and Priscilla. The man who is currently trying to kill clare and assault Pieta, and the one horned monster that Clare has spent her life desiring to kill. I find it very interesting that Raki grows attached to Clare’s enemies. When Rigaldo arrived, his plan to target all the squad leaders paid off because he got the jump on them and blitzed most of their important members. He was on a rampage until Clare, Helen, Deneve and Miria attempted to go on the offensive.
The fight with Rigaldo was a very fun one to read. It was so fun seeing someone keep up with Miria’s speed but have a large skill set to defend himself against all 4 of the warriors. Rigaldo had Miria’s phantom figured out and was just seizing the opportunity in the fight. I really like Clare’s awakening because it is in typical shonen fashion a “desire for more power” but in her case she’s giving in to the yoma in her. Clare is letting the yoki energy surge so she can awaken. She cuts off Rigaldo’s arm and tips the scale of this fight.
Tumblr media
Clare is adjusting to her newfound speed and enhanced abilities. Throughout the fight she is pushing Rigaldo back (now that he has 1 arm) but she still isn’t able to control her direction very well since only her legs have awakened. She continues to increase the energy she uses. When Clare finally snaps and goes over the edge to kill Rigaldo, she is now in the same situation as Jean and as at the point of no return. Clare ask Helen to kill her after her awakening but Jean steps in to repay her debt from the witch’s maw in riful’s clutches.
Tumblr media
Jean and Clare have a really nice dynamic because unlike the rest of her team members she is very honorable and straightforward. Jean has made it a point that her life is Clare’s to use and now she is able to repay her for the actions in Zakol. This scene was heartbreaking because it was the first time since Teresa that we’ve seen Clare weep like this, Jean was important and a friend. Jean taught clare something valuable about her technique and the way to control it, she also gave her life for Clare to live.
Tumblr media
I like the glimpse we get into the organization’s stronghold on the warriors. They even plan for new eyes so they can dispose of Galatea. The organization is trying to eliminate any potential rebels in the future. They speak of the new “eyes”. Priscilla’s scene where she speaks of the lights going out is both poetic and tragic. The lights of Pieta slowly fading as the final ones are bright and strong, she is crying from afar watching as people are being wiped out, she states the final lights are ephemeral.
The introduction of Alicia and Beth was terrifying, the number one of Clare’s generation. Alicia being able to fully awaken while sharing one mind with Beth is an insanely deadly tactic only being compatible with twins. Isley vs Luciela is a really good fight, it really shows the extent of abilities that the creatures of the abyss possess. Isley and Luciela are equally matched and both of their awakened designs are phenomenal.
I really like the bit about Luciela and Rafaela being the failed experiment of complete yoki synchronization. Rafaela is pretty old considering she was around for Teresa as a teen & after her death, she’s still around when Clare is a warrior. This death hug was sadly beautiful. Miria’s plan to hide out and see who survives was a very smart and difficult plan. It really tested her prowess as a leader and the toughness she has to leave the ability of survival up to the individual warrior and everyone had equal chances.
Miria feels like she is to blame for the 7/24 warriors that survived that are now the 7 ghost but her team picks her up on this and lets her know she did the best she could. I love how the comradeship of them has only grown better through the years they were off the grid. This wraps up my battle of the north thread. I honestly love this arc and it completely shifts the feel and stakes of claymore dramatically after the timeskip.

Everyone who complains about "There's no good women in media :\" should watch/read Claymore ten times over. Then again that group of people will probably get attached to the one of the like. Four male characters in the series (THERE ARE A LOT OF CHARACTERS) like Isley. He IS super cool he's a sick ass centaur that can morph his hands but also Riful is a big pile of tough spaghetti and Lucielia is a cat with many many mouths and two tails and is a failed experiment in the Soul Link method of controlling an awakened being and she destroyed half the organization setting her sister who failed to keep her under control in exile and a life-long quest to kill her sister and when she does she literally melds with her and LUCIELIA WANTED TO SEE HER AGAIN DESPITE BEING A CREATURE OF THE ABYSS SHE STILL HELD LOVE FOR HER SISTER AND THAT LOVE FROM BOTH SIDES TRANSCENDED TO MAKE THE DESTROYER A LITERAL ANGEL OF DEATH WHO DESTROYS AND KILLS UNTIL ITS POWER IS EXHAUSTED AND MANAGES TO ACTUALLY KILL RIFUL AND RIFUL'S LOVE FOR DAUF (WHO DIED EARLIER) MAKES THEM MELD TOO AND THEY FACE OFF BUT SHE DIES TO PRISCILLA WHO'S FULL OF RAGE FOR EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING AROUND HER AND SHE'S SUFFERING AND JUST WANTS EVERYTHING TO END AND FINALLY FEELS PEACE AT THE END AHOGUHOGHROHG

Okay ngl I'm on like chapter 120 of my reread, when Clare and Priscilla are mia, so maybe once I finally start reading again I'll find the answer! Which would be embarrassing but whatever. What is the general consensus on awakened Teresa/Clare? Is it like a fusion like the destroyer and Riful/Dauf etc. Or is it Teresa's awakened form? Or is it Clare's awakened form?
