A Cosmos in the Sand
Raven stared hard at her kidnappers.
The one who forcefully dragged her from her room – she knew his name was Damyan from previous visions – was busy preparing the camel.
His companion, who had met them outside of the city walls, stared at her with his mouth agape.  “I can’t believe you really did it,” the shocked male said.
“I told you I would,” was Damyan’s mumbled reply.
“But I thought you were going to kill her,” the black-haired, blue-eyed man said.
Raven frowned.
“New plan,” Damyan said.  “Slaede is too well guarded.  We need to draw him out.”
         “So, you stole his sorceress?”
“Yes,” Damyan answered.  He turned his turquoise eyes to Raven.  “Get on the camel,” he ordered.
Raven glared at him, refusing to move even an inch.
“Maybe she doesn’t understand you.”
“Quiet, Jhon,” Damyan said with an eye roll.  “Either you get on the camel, or I put you on the camel.”
“Why should I make it easy for you?” Raven asked, ignoring his beautiful stare.  “Aren’t you going to kill me eventually?”
“Yes,” Damyan answered with a tight grin.  “Now, you can either ride Aelfred or be dragged behind Aelfred.”
Raven huffed and eyed the iolite jewel – the one weakness of sorceresses like herself – around his neck.  Hadn’t Slaede confiscated all iolite in the area?
“Well?” Damyan growled impatiently.
“Fine,” Raven mumbled, clenching her fists.
“Why does she get to ride Aelfred?” Jhon complained as Raven climbed onto the camel’s back.  “I don’t want to walk.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Jhon,” Damyan answered as he swung his leg over the camel, sitting directly behind Raven.
Raven felt heat come to her cheeks as his muscular chest pressed against her back.
“Comfortable?” a hot voice whispered in her ear, sending a shiver down her spine.
“Does it matter?” Raven shot back.
         “No.”
Raven fought another shiver that ran down her spine.  She was mature enough to admit to herself that Damyan was pleasant to look upon.  Dark tan skin, green eyes with flecks of gold, strong rough hands, muscular chest - “Woah!” Raven gasped as the camel stood suddenly.
“Careful, sorceress.”  Raven heard mocking in Damyan’s voice.  He tightened his grip around her waist and pulled her flush against him.
“We wouldn’t want you getting hurt now, would we?” he whispered again.
This time, Raven did shudder.
Damyan tried not to get distracted by the beautiful woman sitting directly in front of him, but he couldn’t help it.  She smelled so good.  He was so used to the disgusting odor of men; he had forgotten that fancy people could afford things like perfumes and myrrh.  But he wouldn’t get distracted by her smell or hair or eyes or body.  Her body, he thought.  Thank the gods she was no longer wet.  The piece of cloth covering her did little to hide what he’d already seen!
Damyan shook his head.  He needed to control his lust.  He had a job to do.  And thinking about kissing the soft lips of the sorceress was not the job.  They were in the middle of a war, dammit!  He turned to look at Jhon, who was giving him a knowing smile.  “Shut up,” Damyan whispered.
“I didn’t say anything,” the sorceress answered, her voice laced with annoyance.
“I wasn’t speaking to you!” Damyan snapped.  He felt her body stiffen in front of him.
“Well,” Jhon spoke smugly, “I didn’t say anything, either.   You must be hearing things.  Again,” he smiled up at the sorceress.  “Too many hits to the head.”  Raven chuckled, and Damyan felt the vibrations everywhere.
Dear gods, he thought with an eye roll, this is going to be a long journey.
Slaede drummed his fingers on his throne, quietly seething as he listened to the guard’s report.
“It seems that she is no longer in the city,” the guard finished.  “Your Highness?” the guard’s voice shook.
Slaede nodded for him to continue.
“Do you…do you think she went willingly?”
Slaede stilled, his fingers frozen in mid-air as his mind rushed back to that night in the tent - the night an attempt had been made on his life.  Had Raven seen this coming?  Is that why she was so adamant about keeping his would-be-assassin alive?
Slaede’s jaw tightened.  He should have killed that Shadow assassin that night.  But no, he just had to get sentimental and show Raven favor.  After all, Raven was his favorite and most competent sorceress.  Slaede had only lost one battle because of her foolishness.  A lesson from his son after that single failure had been enough to ensure she had never made such a mistake again.
But what if she had gone willingly?
Slaede frowned.  Maybe he should have rewarded her more.  In truth, allowing Raven to live in luxury while her people suffered in the dungeons below may not have been prudent.  Still…just in case.
Slaede rose from his throne.  “Bring Captain Rickus to me,” Slaede ordered.
The guard bowed low before scurrying away.
Slaede walked to the nearest window and looked out at his empire.  All who served him lived in luxury.  They didn’t starve; he never left them wanting; his people were lucky.  Maybe it was time he reminded Raven of that fact.
“Bring her sister, Maya, to me,” he commanded a nearby guard.  Raven’s family still had their uses.

Zine sales are officially closed
Tumblr media
Art by @niahti
As was the case last year, we pitched the idea of a second zine in discord and social media to see if there was interest. We got an overwhelmingly positive response from both fans and creators. And again there were definite challenges to overcome and moments of difficulty. But through it all, the support and enthusiasm of the fandom kept things going.
The passion and creativity of our community is always so strong. So to everyone who jumped on our boat, whether you bought, participated, publicized, or just spread the word, we can’t thank you enough. All of you made it possible to bring our little fandom baby a second life.
🌟 We are not completely done however 🌟
✨ We have some wonderful people in our Spanish speaking community that are working very hard to translate the entire Zine, knowing this is a very large part of our fandom, we don't want you to miss out.
That being said, we are opening the Zine sales back up in the fall.
We'll keep you posted on the progress and about when it will go on sale again. So if you missed out of getting a zine, both versions will be available again in the very near future!
✨ We closed sales on the 2nd of August after a small extension, and in a about three months time, we were able to achieve our sales goal + one, with a total profit of $710.00.
Tumblr media
✨ After we close sales for the final time, In an effort for total transparency, we will share screenshots of the profits and the donation receipt. We won't be making any donations until the final sales are made. No worries, the donation money is safe in a protected account until that time.
✨✨ We hope that this project inspires many creators to follow what you love — after all, canon is something we have the power to create! ✨✨
❤️💜 Much Love, The Damirae zine (2021/2022) Team

A Cosmos In The Sand
Chapter 6
Raven felt the sharp blade of the knife dig into her side as she fought to keep up with Damyan.  He was so much taller than her, his legs longer.  Just one of his strides was equal to two of hers.  It didn’t help that she wasn’t wearing any sandals.  The sand burnt the bottoms of her feet while the pebbles and rocks scattered throughout the street cut into them.  Oh well, she thought, I’ll heal later.  “Woah!” she gasped as she stumbled over her feet.
            “Keep up,” Damyan growled.
“I’m trying,” she argued back.  She really was.  Raven wanted to get as far away from this place as possible.
Guards rushed by her and Damyan, not even giving the couple a second glance.  “Idiots,” Raven could have swore she heard Damyan whisper the word under his breath.  She agreed.  Do I really look that different without the jewelry and makeup?
Finally, they reached the city gates.  They were able to walk right through just as they were closing.  Once again, the guards didn’t give either of them a second look.  Raven wasn’t sure if it was the gods showing her favor or if Slaede’s guards really were so inept.  With her luck, it was probably the latter.  “Seriously?” Damyan groaned.  Raven looked up to see him staring out at the desert.  Following his gaze, she realized he was glaring at a person and a camel.  “Come on,” he gripped her upper arm and pulled her along.
“I can walk beside you.  You don’t have to drag me,” Raven said.  Damyan didn’t let up.  He didn’t even glance her way.  If anything his grip tightened.  Great, Raven thought.  The next few hours were going to be just…great.
“Come on, you stupid camel,” Jhon groaned at Aelfred who stubbornly remained seated on the hot sand.  “He was my friend, too; but he’s dead, and there’s nothing we can do about it!”  Aelfred groaned loudly.  “Don’t make me carry you,” Jhon threatened, “I will carry you.”  Suddenly, Aelfred lifted her head up and immediately stood to her feet.  “Now, that’s more like it,” Jhon said.  “Turn around and walk so we can get as far away from this city as possible.”
“Seriously?”  Jhon froze at the voice behind him.  Turning around with a huge smile on his face, he threw his arms around Damyan.  “Damyan!” Jhon exclaimed.  “I knew you weren’t dead.”
“Uh huh, yeah,” Damyan huffed.  Jhon then looked at the small figure standing next to Damyan.  He nearly jumped at the large, violet eyes looking up at him.  “Um,” Jhon began sheepishly, “hello.  I’m Jhon.”
“Don’t talk to her,” Damyan growled as he gave Aelfred a onceover.
“I thought the plan was to…” he paused, looking at the petite woman barely, barely covered.  “Why is she almost naked?” Jhon asked.  “And wet?  Damyan, why is she wet?”
“Does it really matter?” Damyan asked in annoyance.
“I was bathing when he took me,” the sorceress answered in a hauntingly, melodic voice.
“Oh,” Jhon’s cheeks reddened.  “I apologize for him.”
“You do know she’s the enemy, right?” Damyan glared at his friend.
“She’s not even wearing shoes,” Jhon returned the glare.  “Honestly, Damyan,” Jhon turned to Aelfred and began digging through his things tied to the camel’s back.
“What are you doing?” Damyan asked.  “What is that?” he asked once more when Jhon pulled a tunic and an extra pair of sandals from their supplies.  “She isn’t a guest.  Do you know how many people she’s helped Slaede kill?”
“I didn’t realize your hands were so clean,” Jhon replied before walking to the sorceress who’d been quietly observing them this entire time.  “It’s not much, but it should provide some protection from the sun.”
“That garment is mine,” Damyan growled.
“The sandals are too big, but they should protect your feet,” Jhon ignored Damyan.  “We aren’t all savages.”
“Thank you,” the sorceress looked up at him gratefully.  “My name is Raven.”
“Raven,” Jhon smiled.  “Raven.  Raven.  Raven,” he began to sing her name.
“I’m beginning to see why your city fell within a day,” Damyan grumbled, “you probably invited the enemy in and broke bread with them.”
“Don’t be mean,” Jhon said.
“Whatever,” Damyan rolled his eyes before turning to the sorceress.  “Get on the camel,” he ordered her as Aelfred lowered herself.  Raven glared at Damyan and refused to move.  Damyan stalked right up to her and said, “Get on the camel, or I’ll put you on the camel.  Your choice.”
“Why should I make it easy for you?” Raven asked.  “Aren’t you going to kill me anyways?  Why wait until later when you can end me now?  I won’t fight you.”
“As I said before, you’re worth more to me alive than you are dead.  Now, either get on the camel or be dragged by the camel.”
“Fine,” Raven huffed as she attempted to make herself comfortable on the camel.
“Hey,” Jhon frowned as Damyan climbed on Aelfred and sat directly behind Raven, “why can’t I ride?”
“Firstly, we need to ride fast and hard.  It won’t take Slaede long to figure out his sorceress is no longer in the city.  I want as much distance between us as possible.  Secondly, you are a terrible rider.  You fell off of Aelfred three times on the way here.  Thirdly, the blood of the gods literally runs through your body.  You can easily keep up with Aelfred.”
“That is true.  Fine.  Let’s go.”
Raven felt heat come to her cheeks as Damyan’s muscular chest pressed against her back.  “Comfortable?” a hot voice whispered in her ear, sending a shiver down her spine.
“Does it matter?” Raven shot back.
“No,” Damyan answered.
Raven fought another shiver that ran down her spine.  Raven remembered the first time she saw Damyan last year.  She thought he was beautiful then, but now – Raven wasn’t sure what to think.  She was mature enough to admit to herself that Damyan was pleasant to look upon.  Muscular arms wrapped in dark tan skin, an angular jaw, full lips, green eyes with flecks of gold, strong hands, muscular chest, and – “Woah!” Raven gasped as the camel stood suddenly.
“Careful, sorceress,” Raven heard the mocking in Damyan’s tone.  He tightly gripped her around the waist and pulled her flush against him.  “We wouldn’t want you to fall and break your little neck, now would we?” Damyan whispered in her ear.  This time, Raven did shudder.
Damyan did his best not to get distracted by the beautiful woman sitting directly in front of  him, but he couldn’t help it.  She smelled so good he was so used to the disgusting odor of men:  he had forgotten that fancy people could afford things like perfumes and myrrh.  Although, it wasn’t just her smell that was driving him crazy.  It was her silky hair, the way it brushed against his face anytime there was even the slightest breeze.  Her eyes – beautiful and filled with an emotion he didn’t understand.  There was also her body – her body.   Thank gods she was no longer wet.  Not his best idea grabbing the closest cloth to cover her body.  That strip of cloth did little to hide what he’d already seen.  He’d never been more thankful for Jhon and Jhon’s quick thinking.  Damyan didn’t even care that the tunic gracing the sorceress’ body was his.  He was just happy that her body was somewhat covered by the thin fabric – and he could still feel her curves with every step Aelfred took.  At least she’s no longer wet, he sighed.  Damyan than shook his head.  He needed to control his lust.  He had a job to do – a job that only he and Jhon knew about, a job that he’d botched.
Damyan was supposed to kill Raven.  Mara, he regrettably admitted, had thrown him off guard.  He also hadn’t expected to see Slaede so soon.  Attacking Slaede, however, would be futile being that Raven could more than likely bring him back from death.
They were in the middle of a war, dammit!  Damyan knew he should not be thinking about kissing the soft lips of the sorceress.  Maybe he should have had Jhon ride behind her.  Damyan turned to look at Jhon…who was giving him a knowing smile.  “Shut up,” Damyan whispered.
“I didn’t say anything,” the sorceress replied sharply.
“I wasn’t speaking to you!” Damyan snapped.  He felt Raven’s body stiffen.  She really needed to stop moving…and breathing.
“Well,” Jhon spoke smugly, “I didn’t say anything, either.  You must be hearing things.  Again,” he smiled up at Raven.  “Too many hits to the head.”  Raven chuckled in response, and Damyan felt vibrations everywhere.  Dear gods, he thought with an eye roll, this is going to be a long journey.

A Cosmos in the Sand
Chapter 1
Five-year-old Raven skipped happily between her mom and Azar. "Oh, look," Azar gasped, "they're in bloom."
"What are?" Raven asked with wide eyes.
"My darling," Raven's mother crouched to her daughter's level, "do you see those red and orange flowers in the distance?"
Raven squinted her eyes, staring hard at the flowers that seemed miles away from her. The flowers in question were part of a forest on the other side of the plain. "Yes," Raven nodded.
"They are called fire cosmos," Raven's mother continued. "They come to full bloom on the hottest day of the year."
"It's really hot, today," Raven replied seriously. "Do you think my vision was about the fire cosmos flowers?" Raven asked with a frown. She completely missed the look exchanged between Azar and her mother.
"Maybe," her mother stroked Raven's hair lovingly. "Why don't you run all of the way over there and pick some fire cosmos?"
"May I pick a lot?" Raven asked eagerly.
"Pick as many flowers as you want," her mother replied before pulling her into a tight hug. "I love you so much," her mother muttered.
"I love you, too, mommy," Raven replied before taking off in a sprint.
Several minutes later, Raven reached her destination. "Woah," she fell onto her back amongst the flowers, completely out of breath. "That was far," she spoke to no one. After catching her breath, Raven sat straight up and began gently picking the cosmos flowers surrounding her.
Humming to herself, completely lost in her own world, it wasn't until the smell of smoke reached her nostrils that she looked up. Her eyes widened in horror. Flames and black smoke arose from their camp. "Mommy!" Raven screamed, dropping her armful of flowers. She began the long run back to camp, screaming and crying the entire way.
It was a five-minute run, but once Raven entered her camp's boundaries, she froze. Smoke was everywhere; she could barely see. There were soldiers on horses, soldiers on foot, soldiers setting fire to tents. Her family and friends were running in every direction. The men were fighting with weapons while the women were using their powers…or trying to use their powers.
A shout got Raven's attention. "GET OFF ME!" It was her mother!
"Mommy!" Raven screamed, running through the chaos, dodging fire, debris, and soldiers as she did. Her little size was finally coming in handy.
Raven reached the tent she shared with her mother, rather, she reached what was left of the tent. "Mommy!" Raven cried out again, willing her voice to be heard above the noise.
"Let me go!" Raven heard her mother scream from several feet away.
"Mommy!" Raven cried, running towards the voice. She found her mother fighting three guards. Raven wasn't sure what the guards were doing. One was holding her mother's arms down; the second had her mother's legs pinned; and the third was tugging on her mother's belt, which Raven didn't understand. If they wanted belts, they could have just asked.
It wasn't until the soldier slapped her mother in the face that Raven burst back into action. Screaming as loud as she could, drawing her powers to her, Raven released a burst of energy that sent all three soldiers flying into the flames behind them. The smell of scorched flesh reached Raven's nostrils, and she immediately vomited her breakfast, falling to her knees. A split second later, her mother was by her side. "Raven!" her mother was crying desperately, "Raven, are you okay?" Raven began to sob hysterically into her mother's chest.
"It's okay," her mother gathered her into her arms and began to run, "it's okay." Her mother had made it a few feet when she dropped to the ground, screaming in pain. Raven turned to see her mother grasping and clawing at a purple chain burning her ankle. "Raven!" her mother looked at her in terror, "run!"
"No!" Raven crawled back to her mother and wrapped her little hands around the chain surrounding her mother's ankle.
"Raven, no!" her mother tried to warn her. It was too late. A searing pain shot though Raven's hands as soon as she touched the chain. Raven screeched in pain, grabbing at her clothes. Anything to make the burning in her hands stop. Tears ran down her face in torrents as she looked at her hands. Deep, ugly, red burns covered her palms. "It's iolite, baby," her mother gasped. "It hurts us. Remember?"
Raven nodded. At the moment, she had no idea what her mother was talking about as she could recall nothing from her lessons in that moment. "Honey," her mother cupped Raven's face, "you need to run. Okay?" Raven shook her head. "Yes," her mother nodded. "You need to run. You need to get help."
"No, mommy, no!" Raven cried.
"Go," her mother gave her a gentle shove. However, Raven refused her mother's orders. Instead, she threw her arms around her mother's neck and refused to let go. Her mother hugged her in return. The two sat in the middle of the conflict, holding onto each other for dear life. Her mother whispered words of encouragement into her ear. "You're a cosmos," her mother whispered. "Don't be scared. I love you. Raven, don't be scared. Raven, don't be afraid. I love you. I love you! I love-
"Sorceress!"
Raven shot up with a gasp, tears streaming down her face. "Sorceress," the voice called out once again, "are you okay?"
Raven placed a hand over her heart, willing the beating to slow. "Sorceress, should I – "
Raven held up one hand, ordering the guard to be silent. "I just need a moment," she said, "just a moment." Inhaling the poisoned air, Raven closed her eyes and silenced her mind. She was safe – as safe as a hostage can be; she was in her own tent surrounded by luxury, sleeping on her own cushions; surrounded by iolite air – the poisoned air. "Okay," Raven sighed, "what is it?"
"Your presence has been requested."
"Thank you," Raven dismissed him. Great, she thought, another day of smiling, pretending, and protecting her family.
"I don't trust her," Damyan sneered, looking at their guest in disgust. The 'al Ghul family sat on cushions beneath a canopy. The guest was a dark-tanned female with short black hair. She bowed at the waist to her grandfather, the head of the 'al Ghul clan, Ra's al Ghul. A large map lay on the ground before all of them. Guards stood watch on every side.
"Habibi," Damyan's mother, Talia, spoke calmly, "Mara is your ibnat khal. She's family. Family doesn't betray family."
"Have you told Mara that family doesn't betray family?" Damyan glared at the female whose head was still bowed as she showed deference to her grandfather.
"That was one time," Mara muttered, "I only tried to kill you one time a very long time ago."
"Tch," Damyan tutted. "Mara would sell us out in a heartbeat."
"How dare you‽" Mara's fiery temper rose as she went into a fighting stance. "I am just as much an 'al Ghul as you, Damyan."
"Your loyalty has never been in question, Mara," Talia sighed, annoyed with her son and niece's ongoing rivalry.
"I question her loyalty every day," Damyan responded.
"Enough!" Ra's al Ghul exclaimed to everyone's shock. The patriarch never yelled, never yelled. Things must be worse than I thought, Damyan frowned. "Do you know why we were given this task?" Ra's continued. "Because the Shadows is the only clan able to carry out this mission. For us to succeed, however, there can be no strife amongst us," he glared at his grandchildren. "Am I understood?"
"Yes, Grandfather," both answered.
"Good," he smiled. "Now," he looked down at the map, "according to Mara, we should reach Slaede's encampment by nightfall."
"Assuming he really is on his way here," Damyan mumbled.
"Ibn al Xu'ffasch!" Ra's growled.
"Apologies," Damyan sighed.
"As I was saying, Slaede will be travelling with his sorceress as per usual. Damyan, you will kill his sorceress."
"Seriously?" Mara scoffed. "The sorceress will easily seduce the boy."
"No," Ra's replied, "not if he's wearing this. Bring it here," Ra's al Ghul ordered a guard. Moments later, the guard returned with a small chest. He handed it to Ra's, then silently returned to his station. Opening the chest, Ra's said, "We will each be wearing one." He withdrew three leather cords, each adorned with dark gemstone. "Iolite."
"Iolite?" Damyan's eyes widened. "I thought Slaede destroyed all of the mines."
"Not all of them," Ra's al Ghul displayed the necklaces proudly. Even Mara seemed impressed. "The most powerful being on Earth reduced to nothing by a small. And people say the gods have no sense of humor."
"So…" Mara cleared her throat. "Damyan is taking out the sorceress. Am I to eliminate Slaede?"
"No. That will be me."
"What?" Talia asked in surprise.
"Grandfather, are you sure?" Damyan asked as he tried to mask his worry. Ra's al Ghul was nearly 80. There's no way he can fight Slaede, much less assassinate him quietly.
"Then what am I to do?" Mara seemed to pout. "Do I stand watch?"
"I am sure. He and I have unfinished business." Ra's al Ghul looked his granddaughter in the eye. "You will keep watch."
"But- "
"End of discussion!"
Mara stormed away with a growl as Ra's turned to Damyan. "Make preparations. We leave at sunset."

This DamiRae zine 2022 has been wonderful. It has been a pleasant journey throughot the fics and fanart!!!! This was my bday gift for July and I loved every piece of it. Ive already read twice the stories and I'm in love. I also have the Zine 2021 and without doubt you keep amazing me. You keep improving. I hope we may see a zine 2023 because you are a pretty talented team. Thank you for everything you gave us. Till next time 💜💜💚💚
Oh my goodness, thank you for this amazing compliment to everyone involved. To be honest the team's of contributors change a bit each year, but you are right, they've all been fantastic both times! And we love to hear feedback like this, it's a wonderful thank you to everyone for all their hard work. Keep your fingers crossed, hopefully we'll have another Zine soon. Just not sure about when or who all might be involved in that.
So very glad to hear that you enjoyed the Zine again this year, thanks again and we hope you had a fabulous birthday!

Hello Shippers!
With the many sales we made in the month of June, so far we've raised $500 for the International Humane Society! We thank you so much for you support and donations, it means so much the project we worked so hard on is helping do some good in this crazy world of ours.
To make sure that money is put to good use sooner rather than later, we organizers have decided that July will be the last month we keep Zine sales open. This means that if you have not gotten your copy yet, be sure to order by July 31. Time is a'tick'n! Especially since this could be the last Zine for the fandom for some time.
In light of that, we'd really love if we could meet or exceed the amount of Zines sold from last year and we need your help. So please like and share this post everywhere you can and help our fandom raise money that will provide desperately needed resources to animals in need.
Thank you,
Zine Staff
