URG coral bleached! :( #marineexplorer by John Turnbull Via Flickr: This is the "URG Coral"; first recorded and measured by the Underwater Research Group in the 1960s, and based on growth rates it is thought to be over a century, maybe 300 years, old. Today I found it totally bleached, following months of extreme conditions with heavy rains, storms and warm waters.

Grass root with natural lac dye 🧡   A few years ago I came across some willow root growing underwater in a river in the UK and it got me thinking about the binding properties of root: What if we could grow our clothes from seed?   As an underwater photographer (my real job @zenaholloway ) I was looking for solutions to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and I found that I could sustainably grow grass seed in beeswax moulds.

Scientists predict that nearly all the coral will be gone by 2050 due to global warming 😢 so my response is to grow a sustainable coral reef from grass root.  I want to imagine a future that still has coral reefs. They support 25% of all marine life, and are some of the most spectacular places on the planet (especially if you’re an underwater photographer 😉)   I’ll be exhibiting my ‘coral’ with Material Matters from 22-25 September, top floor at the iconic Bargehouse @oxotowerwharf on London’s South Bank.

Climate change ramping up EL Nino severity
Tumblr media
After the flood: what an El Niño might mean for Australia’s ecosystems. Graham Readfearn's latest article.
The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are getting more extreme with climate change. The above graph charts the cyclic nature of El Nino/La Nina set against the rising temperature trend of global warming. La Nina years are now hotter than El Nino years from just a decade ago.
The odds are that we may get a year or two of El Nino after 3 years of La Nina, although we won’t know for sure until after the autumn predictability barrier for the next cycle.
🔥 Dr Wenju Cai, a CSIRO ENSO expert on LaNina/ElNino, said climate models are suggesting that as the world keeps warming, there will be more extreme La Niñas and El Niños, less neutral years, and their impacts will be more extreme. “Heatwaves are worse and droughts are longer, deeper and harder to break,"
🔥 Dr Andrew King says as the climate warms, an El Niño “will really increase the chance of a record hot year globally.”
🔥 Dr Bowman highlighted Rising Bushfire risk after 3 La Niña years stimulating vegetation growth.
🐠 2022 saw the first Mass coral Bleaching event in a La Nina Year. Expect more decline in coral reef ecosystems, especially with El Nino.

Coral bleaching was first noticed in the 1980s. Global warming and the warming oceans cause coral reefs to bleach. Coral are still alive when they bleach, but they’re stressed and many eventually die. Scientists are seeking ways to protect and revive coral reefs. @vrartlive #yearofvrart weekly challenge. What's Missing? CHECK OUT MY IG FILTERS! On this Father's Day weekend, I'd like to share my little contribution to an Instagram filter project initiated by @theweirdandwild to raise awareness of our environment. Check out my three IG filters (tap on the filter section on my profile page to try them out!). Do tag me! I've chosen to focus on the destruction of natural habitats caused by deforestation, coral bleaching and climate change. I think it's important to understand that human beings are one of the threatened species. We are not separate from nature and when we talk about saving the planet, we're really talking about saving ourselves. Big thanks to Jake @jxketan and Sheryl @sherylsimi , the amazing interactive media artists who expertly turned my 2D drawings into animated IG filters. And do look out for other cool filters from the other Singaporean artists who are part of this project (they will be launched on different dates in the coming days) by following the hashtag #CreatorClimateAction #sustainability #igfilter #igfilters #environment #savetheplanet #connect2earth #deforestation #coralbleaching #climatechange #climateaction #happyfathersday #biodiversity (at Planet Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBrnWu0nPNd/?igshid=k8twxidq35er

it’s no news that corals are heading towards extinction also that they play a way bigger part on this planet than just to look nice. @natgeo website published a great article called “can new science save dying coralreefs” which shows the whole scenario is far more complicated but not hopeless. #coralreef #natgeo #globalwarming #coralbleaching #coralextinction #nature #environment #science #climatechange https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqzv28DhH_Z/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15wo7tb13k81y

This photo may be beautiful, but it shows significant bleaching in the coral reef surrounding Rose Atoll in National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa.
Corals require specific temperature ranges, and when water temperatures become too high, stressed corals often expel the colorful algae they depend on to survive -- this is known as coral bleaching. Recently, our actions have led to warmer water temperatures across the globe. When we burn fossil fuels like oil and gas to power our homes and fuel our cars, we release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This carbon dioxide builds up and acts like a heat-trapping blanket, warming our planet, including the ocean.
In recent years, we've seen coral bleaching events all around the world as a result of this warmer ocean. It's up to all of us to work together to reduce our fossil fuel usage so that we can protect corals and other ocean inhabitants. Together, we can support alternative energy initiatives like solar solutions that will help protect our coral reefs.

Most of you honestly don’t care. Most of you will like this and say “oh how sad” and then proceed to flick your thumb to the next post without even giving it a chance let alone let the message fester in your mind. But a few of you will heed the warnings conveyed by the sea and the earth. Few of you will take time to reflect on the harsh realities of the catastrophic damage done to the sea. If you are one of the few please take some time to watch this video from beginning to end. Wanna know the worst part in all of this? Is that the fact that most of the majority of people don’t do shit about it. Yes it’s important to spread awareness but action is the thing that will fix everything. If you are one of the few please take some time to watch this video from beginning to end. And share. #sealife #coralreef #coralbleaching #seaturtles #sharks https://www.instagram.com/p/BzGmcGBBdB5/?igshid=cyzld4cjlsag

I used premier pro to create this video for my final installation piece. The quality of this video is much better than the programme I had previously used. I also added two recordings together and was able to put audio over it which is sounds from the deep sea. I think it gives the piece an eerie sense to it and enables the viewer to become more engaged with the piece. I am happy with the results from my experimentations and feel the video was more successful than the actual pieces themselves.

  Nomadic State
 “Tourrorism Allinclusive”
@9/10 Gallery / Poznań
“In November 2017, we visited the Egyptian coast of Sinai to collide the generally accepted principle of traveling in a system organized by a travel agency, with free, spontaneous navigation around Egypt" on their own. " For several years, however, there are terrorist attacks against various religious groups and tourists, which effectively prevents summer visitors from going to these areas. The economic picture of this country, dependent on tourism, defines a new, apocalyptic coastal landscape - viewed through the prism of unfinished skeletons and ruins of once-popular hotel complexes. This trip was the starting point and inspiration for the implementation of works dealing with the subject of organized tourism.“
