and got curious about the film poster in the background. I've never seen the movie before but imdb has a great synopsis on it.

Rounders (1998):

John Dahl directed this exploration of New York private clubs devoted to high-stakes poker, with first-person narration from the film's central figure, law student Mike McDermott (Matt Damon), who loses his entire savings to Russian club owner Teddy KGB (John Malkovich). Mike then turns away from cards, devoting his attentions to his law studies and his live-in girlfriend Jo (Gretchen Mol), who's concerned when Mike's former gambling buddy Worm (Edward Norton) is released from prison. She has good reason to worry, since it takes Worm only a matter of minutes to draw Mike back into poker action. When she learns Mike has returned to the poker clubs, she moves out, and Mike begins to lose interest in his studies. Worm has a prison debt, and the threatening Grama (Michael Rispoli) wants the money. Mike not only indulges the irresponsible Worm, he gets involved in Worm's debts. When Grama demands $15,000 on a five-day deadline, the two buddies go into high gear with a non-stop, no-sleep gambling binge that spirals downward toward an ultimate confrontation with Teddy KGB.

Now Carmy isn't dealing with poker cards or prison debts, but the story of a young man's attentions being diverted from his girlfriend and his other responsibilities rings too close to his situation in season 2.

Claire's arrival is akin to the arrival of the Worm character, being someone whose purpose is to divert the main character's attention away from his work. No surprise, but Sydney's character is akin to the girlfriend in this situation, the one who suffers from the loss of the main character and has to deal with his lack of attention to their shared business endeavor.

Also thinking about this in the context of the scene: Richie and Carmy are about to have a conversation about purpose, where Richie feels as though he has none and believes Carmy and the rest of the crew has one, which would then lead them to drop his ass. Carmy assures Richie that he won't drop him but also admits that being in the restaurant business is not fun for him (he makes the distinction that he does love it, just that it's not fun). That gets Carmy thinking about the lack of fun in his life, and culminates in his new internal goal of being able to provide amusement to himself in order to be able to provide it to others. What I've gathered from the first season is Carmy likes attacking problems the moment they are diagnosed and believes the quicker he works on them, the quicker they can be resolved (The Brigade - using terminology from the Al-anon meeting, "changing the chemistry", to solve the kitchen's chaos and keep his side of the street clean). Same can be said for how he tries to force amusement into his life.

Carmy is quick to accept any quick way to amusement, which is provided by the sudden arrival of a former crush. When the moment arises where he is given a chance to leave behind his responsibilities and pursue what he believes is amusement, he jumps at the opportunity, which leaves Sydney by herself in the process of constructing their menu and the restaurant.

Of course there are many more layers to this whole story (Carmy's personal life, his attachment to the past, his past traumas, his lack of relationship experience, his yearning for personal betterment, his budding feelings for his business partner, and his hesitancy to address of the emotional pain he's still holding on to after the losing Mikey). I just wanted to expand on how Rounders (1998) fits into the grand scheme of season 2 Carmy.

SYDNEY CATCHES GARY LAUGHING AT THEIR MISFORTUNE AND CALLS HIM ON IT

We already know Gary is shady and causes chaos.

This is one instance that Sydney caught him and said something to him

I dunno how the viewing audience responds to Gary but I don't like him or trust him.

This happened because I noticed how he bahaves, how he doesn't do what he's supposed to do and is always doing slick sh-t.

In season 1 episode 5 Sheridan, the toilet exploded, and while they were cleaning up Richie came in and asked what happened. (Just a note, the replicants reference is from the movie Bladerunner by Ridley Scott. It just confirms that none of them are real, just a construct in someone's mind most likely)

Tokamak fusion device to be built at UNSW Sydney

The first ever nuclear fusion device to be wholly designed, built and operated by students is being planned for UNSW Sydney.

The program is part of the University’s Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) scheme that is designed to engage undergraduate and postgraduate students in ambitious, long-term, multidisciplinary challenges led by UNSW academics.

The fusion construction project is headed up by nuclear engineering expert Dr Patrick Burr and aims to have a working device operating within two to three years.

Thermonuclear fusion is a process where atomic nuclei are massively heated up, typically to 150-300 million degrees Celcius, and then fused together under substantial force, releasing a large amount of energy in the process.

It is the same process that powers the sun and has the potential to provide clean and abundant energy on Earth if successfully harnessed. Fusion energy is one of the fastest growing energy sectors globally, and there is considerable work going on around the world to harness fusion as a future clean energy resource.

Fusion is the opposite reaction of nuclear fission, which powers conventional nuclear power plants.

Instead of breaking up heavy elements like uranium, it fuses together light elements that are abundant on our planet, like hydrogen, or boron. The process does not rely on a chain reaction, and the by-product is helium, an inert gas and also a valuable resource.

Unfortunately, creating and maintaining the extreme conditions of heat and pressure required for atomic nuclei to overcome their natural repulsion and fuse together is very challenging.

Tokamak technology

UNSW’s first fusion-capable machine will be 'tokamak', a doughnut-shaped vacuum chamber with powerful magnets to control and heat streams of plasma to extreme temperatures, at which point nuclear fusion is possible.

This will potentially be followed by other devices that could achieve fusion using different methods, such as high-power lasers.

The program is being supported by industry partners Tokamak Energy and HB-11 Energy and Dr Burr, from the UNSW School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, said: “This project will be the first in the world where students will design, build and manage a fusion reactor.

“We want to excite the next generation of innovators and make them realise how they can make a big change in the world.

“The students involved in this project will have to develop solutions to big engineering challenges, work closely with industry partners, and push the boundaries of what is possible with fusion energy.

"They will have to master skills that are also highly-sought after in other industries, like safety-critical infrastructure, transportation, outer space, and of course conventional nuclear technologies.”

Many research universities around the world, including those in Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey and USA, already operate traditional fission reactors for training of nuclear engineers, materials testing, or the production of radioisotopes for medicine and industry.

Fusion is widely considered to be inherently safe since the process is not based on a chain reaction, as is the case with nuclear fission.

“It can be seen as an energy amplifier, rather than an energy generator, so when you turn off the switch there is nothing to amplify and the device shuts down, just like a light-bulb,” said Dr Burr.

Although the VIP project aims to create a fusion-capable machine, there is no intention to actually attempt to fuse hydrogen once it is built.

“Scientists have spent decades doing fusion experiments to understand what is required to achieve fusion, even for just a period of nanoseconds,” Dr Burr added.

“Now that we understand that, we are left with the engineering challenge of how to sustain those extreme conditions for hours or even days at a time.

“We don’t need to do fusion to answer that, we just need to maintain a plasma of a few million degrees Celcius, without breaking down any of the sensitive components around it.”

Therefore, the student-built device will be operated without introducing any fuel that can actually create a fusion reaction.

Even so, the UNSW team will also work closely with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO), to ensure the project remains compliant with all regulations.

“The tokamak device is small, around 1 metre by 1 metre, and during the initial build and testing the biggest risk is dealing with high voltages, which is a well-known hazard in our labs, for which we have special cages to keep everything very safe,” Dr Burr said.

“Being involved in nuclear engineering for many years, I am aware that new technology in this area can be very polarising.

“Sometimes in the nuclear industry the engineering happens and then, almost as an afterthought, a spokesperson has to try to explain what the impacts are on society.

“But for this program we are determined to put the discussion about societal impact right at the front and centre.

“This is a cross-faculty project, including academics from social sciences and arts, and our VIP students will study and analyse what the public perception of fusion technology really is and discover how best we can engage with society to share the benefit it could bring.”

American Culture of the 1910s: Social Dance

“In June 1913, the waspish and unconventional journalist (and future modernist icon) Djuna Barnes published the vignette ‘You can Tango – a Little – at Arcadia Dance Hall’. It follows the foppish and upper-class Reginald Delancey as he decides to dispel his ennui one evening by indulging his curiosity (and unacknowledged interest in class and ethnic slumming) by following up an advertisement in the paper and visiting the Arcadia dance hall.

A new facility, owned and run in a working-class district by the ‘Social Centers Corporation’, it is committed – as he is informed by the conspicuously Jewish secretary, Sydney S. Cohen – to ‘elevat[ing] the tone of dancing and to plac[ing] the dancehall business on a clean and wholesome basis’. Once there, Reginald is surprised to see dance censors, helping to enforce an atmosphere where dancing a ‘modified’ tango is permitted.

Eager to dance, he inveigles his father’s Irish office boy into providing an introduction to Delia O’Connor, shopgirl at the perfume counter of the Paris department store on Broadway. ‘Everyone had a glorious time,’ and when the dancing is over, Delia reflects on her way home about the ‘real frangipani sort of guy’ she met earlier – while Reggie resolves to become a patron of the Paris. Barnes’s article suggests a good deal about social dance in the 1910s, especially the tone of innocent fun that accompanies much of the writing about it.

It was truly a craze; by the 1910s over five hundred public dance halls were open each evening in the Greater New York area, and the decade saw the construction of several of the dance palaces which became such a feature of 1920s dance – New York’s Grand Central and Roseland Ballroom among them. Many young women in particular became obsessed with dance; a New York entertainment survey of 1911 showed that 96 percent of girls enjoyed dancing, and Barnes’s Delia enthuses that dancing has the movies ‘beaten to a thirty-nine-cent bargain sale on a rainy Monday’.

Moreover, Barnes also hints at some of the sociopolitical forces attending this relatively new form of public leisure. The dance craze was deeply enmeshed with the progressive discourse of moral hygiene which had an especial concern for unescorted young women; but it also evidenced the progressive faith that vice and public health problems in America’s big cities could be solved through systems of physical culture and exercise.

Reggie’s Arcadian adventure also suggests how new cultures of commercial entertainment were encouraged by – but also sustained – new forms of advertising, new magazines, and dancing celebrities who became ‘idols of consumption’ in much the same way as did early film stars. And it suggests how the language and the barriers of class, race, gender and ethnicity were both inescapable in the dance and music of the 1910s, but also open to often titillating and exhilarating redefinition and flexibility.

As was true of films and vaudeville in the 1910s, the class profile of those who attended social dances in commercial entertainments underwent significant change in the decade, a change which led to a big increase in overall participation. Like vaudeville and films, social dancing was a well-established feature of working-class recreation by the 1910s; and the language of respectability was similarly crucial in enticing the middle class to get involved. This applied to both styles and venues.

‘Tough dancing’, or barnyard dancing, had emerged from African American dance styles and the Barbary Coast vice district of San Francisco in the 1900s, and encouraged close proximity between dance partners as well as jerky physical movement supposedly copying the movements of animals (the turkey trot, for example, involved flapping the arms; the grizzly bear involved close hugging).

Middle-class reformers were horrified at the sexual suggestiveness of these dances, which were described as ‘not dancing at all, but a series of indecent antics’ of ‘disreputable origins’, and they were widely banned at prominent middle-class dance venues and hotels. (Woodrow Wilson even cancelled the ball planned for his inauguration in 1913, fearing the scandal that might ensue if preventing these dances proved impossible).

Dance censors, dance manuals and a new set of dance magazines all focused on adapting and ‘refining’ these dances through a discourse of respectability in dancing, one which defined dance’s benefit as healthy exercise and the cultivation of ‘grace’ rather than focusing on its romantic or sexual potentialities.

It was even discussed in the terms of racial–national improvement so common in physical culture; in the words of one booster, regular dances in public schools, properly instructed and chaperoned, would ‘do more good to the race than . . . discussing eugenics or . . . indulging in a flippant study of social economics’. Commercial venues also emerged to cater for a middle- class clientele emerging from a tradition whereby dancing took place primarily in private homes and at society balls.

As Lewis Erenberg discusses, the rise of the cabaret as a middle- class venue in the decade broke down barriers between performers and audience that had structured theatrical and concert hall stages in earlier entertainment cultures; cabarets became a ‘new public environment for the exploration of alternatives to the private character of the nineteenth century’.

Cabarets expanded the spaces they had for exhibition dancers to cater for public dancing; elegant hotels began to hold ‘tea dances’ for afternoon dancing; and there was a boom in dance instruction classes. Attempts to regulate this expansion were also extensive Erenberg observes that middle-class cabaret tables were organised to discourage contacts between unacquainted men and women and, as Kathy Peiss notes, ‘the “couple on a date” became an increasingly important cultural construct for the middle class, since it provided a way to structure potentially promiscuous heterosocial relations at the new resorts’.

Campaigning Progressives in cities across the country helped pass licensing ordinances regulating dance halls and dancing academies. Committees even opened and ran dance halls in some working-class areas, although ‘tough dancing’ – as well as greater freedom in heterosocial contact – persisted in working-class dance culture in the decade, often in defiance of the standards of the more recent uptake of public dance by the middle class.

Peiss’s seminal work in particular has explored how young working women generally enjoyed greater freedoms in how they danced and with whom they danced than did middle- class women of the time, and how they forged a distinctive culture of personal style, qualified sexual freedom and female friendship in public dance. Such a culture is important for understanding that the nature of the ‘new woman’, one of the decade’s most enduring archetypes, did not emerge purely through a ‘trickle down’ model of cultural transmission.

Although critics still tend to define that new woman as primarily a middle-class figure, the cultures of working-class dance demonstrate that working women were also instrumental in redefining the limits and nature of female agency, style and independence in the period. Despite this, the decade’s dancing icons were those who presented dancing to the middle class not just as wholesome, unthreatening, elegant and fun but as articulated to a whole new mode of fashion and social aspiration.”
