Contemporary Animation Research #1 -
Upon submitting my learning agreement, I thought it would be good to go on a deep dive looking for animated short films that could serve as inspiration. While some of these were new discoveries, others are ones that I have had saved for quite some time.
vimeo
vimeo
Jesse Collett - Mastermind & How to Seduce with Confidence
Jesse Collett as an animator places a huge emphasis on the shape and form of his simplistic characters, making them shape shift into objects and backgrounds. The use of colours and backgrounds also really help these characters stand out. This simplistic yet effective approach to animation and character design is really interesting.
vimeo
Gabrielle Selnet - Nicotine Baby
An animation that places huge emphasis on the atmosphere that it creates. The film is mostly seen through the flashlight of a torch, with the intricate sound design and lack of colour also contributing. This is also a really good example of telling a story without any words.
vimeo
Jonathan Djob Nkondo - The New Exhibition
An amazing short film, again without words, that makes really good use of shapes and form - such an interesting short film!
vimeo
Nicolas Ménard - Wednesday with Goddard
A really inspirational combination of hyperrealistic background and childish characters. The film follows the rhythm of a children's book, but with a dark humour twist. We travel from one space to the next, discarding existential statements on love, faith and death almost as soon as they are introduced.
vimeo
Chloé Farr, Gabrielle Selnet & Adam Sillard - Au Revoir Jérôme
Beautiful animated, almost psychedelic animation about a man's escapades in the afterlife. Not too dissimilar from the previous film - the structure they take could serve as huge inspiration for how I would want to structure my film.
vimeo
Decovocal - Two Tea Two
An experimental, shapeshifting animation that feels almost like a moving art piece. The lack of voice acting helps add to the mysterious atmosphere of the entire animation.
vimeo
Wong Ping - Who's The Daddy
A completely left field and beautifully animated comedy short film. While it's content matter is somewhat confounding, the visuals are so so interesting!

☆ ALICIA’S MONTHLY MEDIA MENTIONS: OCTOBER `22
hi guys! October seemed to pass by super fast - I can’t remember some of it. I think I'll likely becoming a bit busier as my school year continues but I’ll definitely try to continue updating this blog with the things I make! I also haven’t been keeping track of the media I’ve consumed simply because I’ve been consuming too much to keep track of, but here are the few I’ve remembered to write down. I’ve also included links to the media I could. A lot of the short films are on YouTube, so watch them as you please!
Visual:
My Little Goat (2018) dir. Toki Misato
I went for a short film viewing hosted by my school’s Women In Animation club and the theme was horror. This is one of the many that were quite memorable. It’s a stop motion animation with adorable needle-felted models and it has a great story. However, a content warning of SA! Please be warned!
AU REVOIR JÉRÔME ! (2022) dir. Chloé FARR, Gabrielle SELNET, Adam SILLARD
My roomie sent me this to watch. It’s absolutely gorgeous with beautiful environments. It’s not plot heavy - more-so a visual delight. I’d highly recommend giving this a watch!
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) dir. Anne Fletcher
I watched this with my friend after we made tteokbokki together <3 I lov her <3. This movie was surprisingly not as bad as you’d expect. The actresses who play the witches jumped right back into their roles and the references they made to today’s age weren’t cringey! A good 3/5 haha.
Under This Luminous Sky (2022) dir. Emily Xu
Another short film, this one is actually the fourth year film of someone in my school’s animation program. I really admire Emily’s work - she’s just a fantastic artist and to see where she is now makes me think there is so much possibility out there. My friend (whom I had tteokbokki with), showed me her third year film as well, said it was big in the furry world lol. But Under This Luminous Sky feels very self-indulgent. It’s such a cute story, with great animation and music. I love the character design and use of colour. Ugh, hats off to Emily!
Wendall & Wild (2022) dir. Henry Selick
I watched this in preparation for Halloween haha. I absolutely love Coraline so it was great seeing another film from Selick. My friend is in the animation program so she’d been telling me about all these movies I should watch, this being one of them. I think the plot cast a bit of a wide net - I think focusing on one aspect might’ve made the story more compelling. I do love Key and Peele together haha. Psyched that their character design resembled them irl too.
Ghost Files
I loved watching Buzzfeed Unsolved but mores the paranormal seasons, so I was psyched to see Shane and Ryan’s new show. They play with fun new ghost hunting toys and have a similar concept to their on-field expeditions as on BF. Love them.
Atlanta
My roommate told me to watch this show so I finally bit the bullet. It’s so fucking funny. I was surprised to see it didn’t follow a laid out plot - season 1 sets up the character’s dynamic and situation but the main focus of the show seems to be single episode happenings rather than advancing a super complicated plot. It provides commentary on irl situations while being a fun watch. Zazie Beatz is actually incredible.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities
Such an absolute delight to watch. I love that each episode focuses on a different story and that the horror is not so typical. I’m a big fan of the The Outside. John Watts! The actress is amazing. I love the sets and styling of this episode. I also learned that Pickman’s Model was shot at UofT and the artist Geordie Miller is the one who created the art used in the life drawing session. So amazing!
Music: October 2022 Spotify Playlist
28 Reasons - The 1st Mini Album - SEULGI
I absolutely love Seulgi and I was so excited for her solo debut. The trailer sets up this awesome plot that I was excited to see in the mv, but I was surprised to see how it differed from my expectations in terms of plot. I think Seulgi did explain that the album trailer was her in more of a dream state, and the mv was her irl. Nonetheless, the album did not disappoint. 28 Reasons just leaves you wanting more and she serves on the B sides. Huge fan of Dead Man Runnin’ and Anywhere But Home. Hopefully manifesting things with Los Angeles. Seulgi is the patron Kpop idol for creatives and you can’t tell me otherwise!
ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE - Miley Cyrus
Miley is a star. And I seemed to have forgotten that over the past few years. If you’re one of those people that say Miley needs a rock album, this is as close as it gets. I got to discover so much of her discography that I didn’t listen to after her Bangerz era. But she’s fucking amazing. She also plays some of her nostalgic hits. Love this live album. The intro song for this album is so funny, though.
Favs include:
We Can’t Stop X Where Is My Mind - Live
Never Be Me - Live
7 Things - Live
High - Live
You - Live
You (Take 2) - Live
Airport Goodbyes (Prod. The Black Skirts) - WENDY
Wendy is just a fantastic vocalist. This song is so soothing and I’d love to play it anytime, any place, anywhere.
Reading:
Marian Blue, the Color of Angels, Virgins, and Other Untouchable Thing Katie Kelleher
a lovely exploration of the colour blue
Alright, that’s all for October 2022. Thanks for stopping by!

My awesome Sundance experience
Tumblr media
Image from Goodbye Jerome! by Chloé Farr, Gabrielle Selnet, Adam Sillard
This has been my first year participating in Sundance, and even though it was virtual this year I still had a lot of fun getting excited about the independent films screened. One of the things that I liked most about Sundance was the community I felt. Oftentimes in large crowds for concerts and things like that it’s easy to find people who are friendly because you all have a shared interest and excitement. I thought it was really cool to see this feeling translated to films.
Another point that I found really interesting about Sundance is that most of the people in my class didn’t watch the same movies. There was some overlap, but in general they talked about many different films. This was cool because I got to see genuine interest. Of the films that were similar it was also interesting to hear that most people had the same, if not similar, feelings about the films.
One of the best experiences of Sundance, to me, is that I found the online reviews of one film to be completely different from that of my friends and I who’d watched it. The feeling of a difference in opinion about something with someone who got to experience the same film as me was pretty cool because it was something that I feel like even though we had different feelings about the film we still both had an intense feeling about said film. The shared intense feeling is cool.
