Saviors in a Half Shell 5
“Let me get this straight. You guys were the ones who really saved the city? Twice?”
The commotion had made national news headlines for weeks years ago. The most recent occurrence was five years ago, way before Y/N had made her way to the city.
It was the sort of thing that led to many online conspiracy theories, but none of them had any solid evidence. The media led people to believe it was a man named Vernon Fenwick, who had subsequently called himself ‘the Falcon’.
How obnoxious.
“We knew we wouldn’t be accepted by the general public, and he just so happened to be working with us- it made sense,” Leonardo shrugged.
“People are so gullible,” she snorted. She shook her head. “Even I had a feeling he couldn’t have taken that thing down without help. I mean, one man? Unless it was dumb luck. I’m still trying to understand why someone wants to take over a city. A single city. What, turn it into his kingdom? He knows there are bigger and better cities out there, right?”
“Bigger and better? Oh, man! We have been so busy saving this city, we haven’t been able to finish our hip-hop Christmas album!” Mikey couldn’t have sounded more pitiful.
Y/N laughed. “I’d love to hear you guys try to rap Silent Night. Ninjas and all.”
Right as Michelangelo opened his mouth to give her a proper demonstration, he was pushed over by his red-banded brother.
“Someone’s a party pooper.”
“I just spared your eardrums,” Raph said, looking quite pleased with himself.
“What a sweetheart,” Y/N said through a snort. These guys were definitely brothers, the way they treated each other.
“Speaking of sweethearts,” Mikey grinned. “What are you going to do now? Now that you know us and all. You gonna stay here for good?”
“Mikey-” Raph growled.
Y/N just shook her head. “I have an apartment in Brooklyn I should probably get back to at some point. And a job.”
“Do you think you’re ready to get back to all that?” Leonardo asked her quietly. He still wasn’t sure what pushed you so far towards the edge- depression, that was pretty clear. Was there a more specific reason?
She shrugged again. “Have to sooner or later. It comes and goes. Good days, bad days, you know?” She looked around the room with a small smile. “Plus, if I go back to… All that, and I feel like it’s all going down the drain again- well, you guys make a mean cup of tea.”
The brothers looked between each other. It was obvious they all felt some type of way to hear that she was leaving. They had known this woman for less than twenty-four hours, and yet the thought of her leaving them left them feeling empty. She was one more human that accepted them for who they were. She didn’t run, she didn’t scream, she just accepted it.
“I took the liberty of adding our numbers to your phone,” Donatello said finally. “In case you ever need us for any reason.”
“Need a cup of tea, an escape, a friend-”
“-Boyfriend-” Mikey cut in.
Raph wasted no time knocking him over completely this time.
“I don’t think I could handle you, Michelangelo,” Y/N gave him a small smile. “You remind me of me when I was younger.”
Mikey got to his feet, dusting off his thighs. “How old are you again?”
She grinned. “Twenty-one, legal drinking age.”
He shook his head in confusion. “We’re older than you.”
“I really can’t thank you guys enough for this,” Y/N said, ignoring Mikey’s statement. “Especially you two.” She looked between Raphael and Leonardo. “Especially you two. And the Thai food of course.”
~
It felt like it had been an eternity since she left. It was almost dusk, it had really only been hours. Donatello gave her an extremely detailed map of the sewers, including the streets they followed, in case she wanted to come down by herself. They all figured she’d just ask for an escort, but in case she didn’t feel like it.
“And as soon as she comes into our lives, she leaves,” Michelangelo said through a dramatic sigh. “Do you think she’ll be okay?”
“She’ll be alright,” Donatello said. “I added multiple suicide hotlines and therapists to her phone when I added us.”
“She can’t just stay here forever,” Raphael grunted. “She lives up top, she belongs up there. April and Casey don’t live their lives down here with us, do they? No, they live up top with the other humans.”
Leonardo stayed quiet. They were right- she belonged up there with the other humans. She had a job, an apartment, a life- they were just four turtles that lived in the shadows. They saved her from a mistake she couldn’t go back from. What she did now was up to her.
“Maybe we should check on her tonight!” Mikey said, disrupting Leonardo from his thoughts. “Don, you got her address, right?”
“You think I’d let her leave without knowing where to find her? Do you even know me?” Donatello let out a ‘pfft’. “I have her address, her workplace, her social media profiles.”
“Isn’t that going a little too far?” Leonardo said.
“It’s all for her safety!” Mikey argued, even though the question obviously wasn’t pointed towards him.
Leonardo sighed. “Fine. We can check on her tonight.”
He tried to convince himself it was for his brothers’ sake.
“Since you did all that research on her, might as well not put it to waste. Whadoya got, Donnie?” Raph asked as he plopped back down on the couch.
Donnie pushed up his goggles, more for effect than anything. They were quite literally strapped to his head. “According to all of her profiles, she was born in Iowa and moved here a year and a half ago. No listed family members. Says here that she works for herself, doesn’t say what, but I’m seeing a portfolio right here with a bunch of different headshots.”
Mikey made his way over to Donnie’s corner, squinting at the screens. “Maybe she’s a professional photographer. Do you think she could shoot the music video for our Christmas album?”
“I have a feeling it’s more of what’s in the picture that is her job,” Donnie said slowly. “My money’s on makeup or hair.”
“What do you know about that stuff?” Raph questioned.
“Hey, if it was a photography portfolio, you’d definitely see more variety than just heads,” Donnie replied, rolling his eyes.
“Too bad we don’t need a new hairdresser,” Raph snorted, running his hand over his bald head. “Alopecia right here.”
“We’re turtles, we don’t grow hair in the first place.”
“It was a joke, Don.”
“It wasn’t a very thought out joke.”
By that point, Leonardo was no longer paying attention to his brothers. He was no judge of skills with hair, but these pictures didn’t look half bad. Maybe he needed to pay attention to pop culture a bit more to understand. Was she dissatisfied with her work?
She hadn’t mentioned a roommate. He figured she lived alone. Leo recalled April saying how expensive it was to have your own apartment in any part of New York. She couldn’t have been that bad at her job to be able to live on her own.
His thoughts were disrupted when he felt his phone buzz.
Miss me yet? - Y/N
He frowned, looking down at the screen. It had only been hours.
You guys seriously messed up my sleep schedule, I’m wide awake and it’s almost nine at night. - Y/N
Oh yeah? Almost time for us to get to work - Leonardo
Ah, the night shift. Latest I’ve worked was probably until two. I didn’t want to even think about waking up the next morning. - Y/N
You work that late? - Leonardo
I had no idea this client was going to take me eight hours. We were almost sick of each other by the end of it. - Y/N
Maybe Donnie was right. He had no frame of reference for photography, but that seemed late. Did hair related things take that long?
I’ll let you get back to work. Maybe you’ll even save another damsel tonight. - Y/N
Let’s hope I don’t have to - Leonardo
He wasn’t sure his brothers could handle two humans in twenty-four hours. Mikey would go crazy.
“Leonardo? Earth to Leonardo?”
He bounced back into reality. “What did I miss?”
“Um, our entire conversation?” Mikey said, poking him on the shoulder. “It’s your head that’s in the clouds today.”
He sighed. “What, then?”
“April says she has a lead on the Purple Dragons,” Donnie said, turning towards them. “They’re hitting several spots tonight. We need to get going.”
“Alright, you know the drill,” Leonardo said loudly. “What are we waiting for?”
He didn’t have to ask twice.
~
Meanwhile, Y/N was settling back into her apartment. She regretted leaving it in such a mess the night before. It had taken her until now to finally get it straightened up enough to have company.
Not that she was expecting company.
She let out a small sigh as she placed a mug of tepid water in the microwave. She briefly recalled the events that ensued in the past twenty-four hours.
She did not wake up yesterday thinking she was going to get that close. It had taken all of her courage to even stand on that ledge. Heights were not her friend, ever since she was a child. Maybe it wasn’t the fear of heights so much as it was the fear of falling.
It didn’t make sense that it was her chosen method.
She shook her head quickly. No, those were not the kind of thoughts she needed. Not this soon.
Truth be told, it was hard to live in a city such as New York. It was so easy to get carried away with the hustle and bustle the city was known for. Even on her daily walk to the shop, she felt like a tiny speck in the big picture. Nobody gave her a smile, nobody even looked at her. It wasn’t what she was used to.
Hell, back in the Midwest, people smiled at strangers as they passed them on the road. They waved to people driving tractors, and were even pleasant if one was going ten miles per hour. But here?
If you so much as stopped on the sidewalk, you were given death glares and knew people wished you didn’t exist in that moment.
Maybe she wasn’t meant to stay here.
It was almost every hairstylist’s dream. If you could make it in New York, you really made it. It was a cherry on top if you ended up catering to hair shows, took on a sponsorship for various brands. If you made it in New York, you could even create your own line of color and hair products.
Two and a half years after gaining her license in hairdressing, it just wasn’t what she expected. The hair was great, that wasn’t the problem. The environment drained her. She wasn’t sure if it was worth the heartache.
But those four brothers…
“Maybe I should check in on them,” she told herself.
The microwave began to beep. She reached in to pull the hopefully hot water-filled mug and gasped when the ceramic burnt at her skin. No, she’d give that a minute to cool off, actually.
She glanced over at her phone, it was dangerously close to falling off the edge of the couch. Y/N made her way over and unlocked it with her fingerprint. As she did so, she quietly wondered how Donatello managed to get into it in the first place.
In fact, their four names were now listed as her emergency contact numbers. They were even color coded, not that she needed a reminder on who was who. She decided to text Leo.
Miss me yet? - Y/N
After thinking for another second, she sent another text. Hopefully they weren’t weird about double-texting.
You guys seriously messed up my sleep schedule, I’m wide awake and it’s almost nine at night. - Y/N
It wasn’t completely true, she didn’t typically go to bed until midnight or so. There was no harm in friendly banter, right?
She set her phone back down, on the counter this time, and went to check on her mug of hopefully no longer boiling hot water. Before her fingers even touched it, it dinged.
Oh yeah? Almost time for us to get to work - Leonardo
She looked at the message for a while, her mug of tea leaf-less water all but forgotten.
Ah, the night shift. Latest I’ve worked was probably until two. I didn’t want to even think about waking up the next morning. - Y/N
You work that late? - Leonardo
Did I ever tell them what I did for a living?
Not that it would really matter to them. They obviously didn’t need a beautician.
The hair thing, she was definitely referring to the hair thing. Turtles didn’t have hair. Not that she saw, anyway-
Y/N, I swear, they’re fuckin’ turtles. Of course they don’t have hair anywhere.
I had no idea this client was going to take me eight hours. We were almost sick of each other by the end of it. - Y/N
She remembered that night well. It was actually one of her first clients that she ever got since moving to the Big Apple. And boy, was this girl loyal. She bought product every time, tipped well, even consulted for possible wigs. Y/N wasn’t sure why she would want wigs, she had beautiful hair, but she wasn’t about to judge. That was money.
Plus, she worked for some TV station local to New York. This client was a dream client.
As soon as she sent the message, she groaned. He probably didn’t even care to hear about that kind of stuff. He was probably busy anyway. You know, saving the city.
I’ll let you get back to work. Maybe you’ll even save another damsel tonight. - Y/N
She had to admit, knowing she was the first person they’d saved in such a way made her feel special. Sure, it was the worst possible circumstance, but… In her mind, it was almost like fate. They were different, but they accepted her into their home so easily. They knew she needed help and didn’t hesitate to try their best. They gave her a safe space to sleep, away from her own world. It gave her time to clear her head. Maybe the meditating had something to do with it.
Let’s hope I don’t have to - Leonardo
For some reason, the last message didn’t hit quite right with her. It suddenly drew her back.
Just make some tea, Y/N. Light some candles. Deep breaths.
The last thing she wanted was to be a burden to these four new beings in her life she’d love to consider her first real friends in the city. She crossed her fingers that he didn’t mean his words the way she took them.
Candles lit, tea freshly brewed (and with a chunk of ice for good measure), Y/N settled down on the couch with an oversized blanket and decided to watch something on TV. That’d clear her mind.
“April’s hair does look so good,” she mumbled to herself with a smile, the first thing on TV was the nightly news. “Good job, me.”

Eleven songs that Mary Steele recorded between October 1919 and ca. May 1921 were released on discs. This collection includes seven of those along with two sides by her sometimes accompanists, the Antoniou Brothers. She was one of only only four women to have recorded in the Turkish language (the only one who wasn’t Greek, it turns out), the second woman to have recorded in Arabic, and the only Woman and in Albanian in the U.S during the 1910s and 20s. Phrases in both Armenian and Kurdish turn up in her recordings. Because of her broad linguistic capabilities and her Anglicized name, she baffled me for years - who was she? where was she from? - and I would not have known anything substantial about her had I not been contacted by her great-grandnephew Rob Steel. He has done a lot of research on her, providing a basis from which I could do some more investigation. What follows is an amalgamation of what we have learned. Mary Steele was born in Mersin, Turkey February 21, 1887, the sixth of eight children. Steele’s father was Hanna Luke Boulad, born July 15, 1856 in Aintab (now Gaziantep) in southern Turkey who came from a Melkite Catholic family. While attending a Presbyterian missionary college in Mersin he met Mary’s mother Freda, a fellow student, who had been born in Aleppo, Syria August 31, 1860. They were married and had their first child Phoebe in 1875 in Gaziantep. Over the next 25 years, Hanna took various teaching jobs back and forth from one city to the next, spending a few years in Mersin, a few in Gaziantep, then Tarsus, then back to Gaziantep, then Mersin, back to Gazientep, back to Mersin, then finally, by 1900, to Beirut by which time they had eight children, all boys except Phoebe, the oldest, and Mary, who was then 13. At the urging of a missionary neighbor in Beirut, an American Consul named Dr. Metheny, they sent their two eldest sons, Saul and Alex, to the U.S. In 1901, they sent two more sons William and John. By 1902, Freda Boulad was disconsolate at the breakup of her family, so, with sponsorship from the Presbyterian church, Hanna sold his possessions and packed up the family of including his wife, two small boys,15-year-old Mary, her older sister Phoebe, and Phoebe’s husband and two children, and they sailed from Beirut to Marseille to Philadelphia, arriving August 13, 1902. The family settled in south Philadelphia. By 1910 56 year old Hanna had left behind the life of a scholar and was working as an upholsterer, living on Glenmore Ave. with his wife, a 27 year old son Joseph (also in upholstering), his wife Christine and their two children, and an 11 year old son Benjamin (working in a soap factory). The family name Boulad (meaning, roughly, “strong” in Arabic) had been changed at the port to Steele, and Hanna was called John. His gifts for language were utilized periodically, including, according to family lore, consultation with Egyptologist Dr. Howard Carter (best known at the discoverer of Tutankhamen’s grave), but he resigned himself, unhappily it seems, to American life. While most of the family stayed settled in the working-class south Philly suburbs of Glenolden and Collingdale for decades, Mary Steele traveled. Family documents refer to her having been married at 14, but the first marriage we’re fairly sure of is to one William Gladstone Richardson in January 1912 in either Iowa City or Chicago, depending on which document can believed. Richardson was Mary’s age, 25 at the time, and a native of Farina IL. They apparently had a child and were still married and living together in St. Louis, Missouri in 1920. Richardson he died in 1958, now buried in Ronan, Montana. Steele seems to have spent the better part of 30 years living the life of a performer on the road. She turned up in in New York City at the age of 32 for six recording sessions for the Victor company from October 2 through December 24, 1919. Accompanied by a portly pair of cymbalom- and clarinet-playing Greek brothers from Samos (an island that remained a semi-independent Ottoman territory until it was repatriated to Greece in 1913 during the First Balkan War), she initially recorded four songs in Arabic. The first disc was given a write-up blurb in Victor’s Arabic catalog of the time: “The first selection ‘My Rose’ tells of a youth’s ardent admiration for his sweetheart whose beauty he compares to the rose. In the song on the reverse of the record, ‘Father I Want to Get Married,” a girl confesses to her father her love for a blind man and she tells him that even his misfortune will not detain her from marrying him. The composer, Mme S. Mary, a new Victor artist, sings these Syrian melodies to the accompaniment of cymbal and clarinet.” A few days later, the Antoniou Brothers made four instrumental sides which were released as part of Victor’s Greek series, two of which include Steele playing percussion (and on one of which she can be heard shouting encouragement to the players in the background). The trio returned to the studio every couple weeks over the next two months, cutting four songs in Greek and Albanian over and over again. Victor’s recordists must have thought they had something special in Steele as a performer to let her cut the song “Cuchawaki (The Gamblers)” a total of fifteen times, “Ismenyes” twelve times, and “Ardhi Koha A Bekuar” eleven times during a period when most immigrant musicians got only one or two takes to complete a performance for release. Only the latter of those three songs, translated from Albanian as “Hurrah for the Nation” was ever issued with “Flamuri (The Flag)” (completed in three takes) as its flip, likely as an attempt to salvage something salable from the sessions. The disc sold poorly, which is unsurprising given that the Albanian-speaking population of the U.S. numbered only a few thousand at the time. (Notably, Victor only ever issued four other discs in Albanian, all recorded in 1917-18 by Giuseppe Mauro with accompaniment by the house orchestra before trying one last time in 1924 when they issued five songs by Adreas Pappas-Athanas Mone.) Around March of 1921, she recorded again, this time with a new band for Columbia at their Woolworth Building studios. In two sessions, she knocked out five songs in a combination of Turkish and Arabic in one or two takes. One of the songs was issued as the flip side of a song by Marika Papagika (one of the rare instances of Papagika singing in Turkish). After her session in May 1921, she never recorded again. The 1930 census found Steele living with a Greek man named Stelianos Grigorlides at the New Jackson Hotel in Chicago’s Greektown, giving her occupation as “dancer” and her language spoken other than English as “Armenian.” May 1931, she married an Athenian named George Zamanos in New York City, but it didn’t last. By 1935, at the age of 48, she heeded the family call and moved to Jacksonville, Florida to take care of her then-widowed mother Freda. Her brother John (b. 1886) died that year; Alex (b. 1882) had died in 1915. While she was there, she filed her Declaration of Intent to naturalize as a U.S. citizen, having lived as an alien in this country for 35 years. She gave her race and nationality as “Armenian.” We can only speculate that as a Christian from Turkey, having lived among Greeks and Armenians in nightclubs, theaters, and coffeehouses for decades, her identification with those groups was stronger, or potentially easier for mainstream America to comprehend, than with her Arab family. Or perhaps her mother was Armenian? By 1940, Mary Steele had resettled closer to her remaining family in south Philadelphia at 2535 67th St. living with an Armenian rug cleaner named Harry Hachrian, who was listed as a lodger in a house she owned. She gave her marital status as “widow,” but in March 1944 she filed a summons for divorce against George Zamanos in Nevada, apparently the last place she knew that he’d lived. She apparently died in 1948, about age 60. Her younger brother Joseph, born Sept. 6, 1895 in Gaziantep, also wound up working in show-biz as Ingrid Bergman’s business manager. In 1959, he published a memoir titled Ingrid Bergman: An Intimate Portrait. He died in 1980.

The spots you can visit within your rentalcar that can't be achieved taxi or by shuttle are some of the greatest in Mexico. Iowa automobile owners spend some of the cheapest car insurance payments, with typical charges at $912 annually, $413 less than the average $1,325-a-year insurance expenses throughout the claims. If anybody still wishes, After all to recruit me a-car I'm a lot more than open to it haha but I-donot understand, I think my car sponsorships often last per year and during the start of the year I'll be so pleased but as it finishes I will need to seriously consider discovering another mentor or devoid of a vehicle to operate a vehicle... Record everything that rings false about All The Best, Skip Wyckoff could take quite a while, but, quickly, the title character's mental condition contradicts knowledge, the depiction of the Rafe character is amazingly offending, and the incorporation of a Red Scare subplot doesn't work. 10 To Watch : Mayors Edition 52019
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 20 : MAYOR’S EDITION
With Jacob Aere
“Game of Thrones” may be over, but the legend of Brooks Koepka grows. On Sunday, Brooks Koepka hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy and waded even further into fantastical lore. Perhaps USA Today said it best, “For a man almost childishly alert to perceived slights off the course, he moves through the choppy waters of a major like a shark focused on real meals and uninterested in the chum bobbing along the way.” Koepka overcame four consecutive bogeys on his inward nine Sunday – he led by seven strokes as the final round got underway – to beat Dustin Johnson by two shots with a final-round 74. The defending PGA champion, Koepka won for the fourth time in the last eight major championships he has played. He is guaranteed the top spot in the world golf rankings. Sunday’s victory netted him a cool $1.98 million. More importantly, it may have finally cemented ultimate respect and big paydays with potential sponsors. Koepka’s current biggest deals are with Nike and Michelob Ultra, and he doesn’t have an equipment sponsor. Dollar signs behind an equipment deal just went up big time.
It’s graduation season, and we’d like to suggest a gift. Our Sport Business Handbook recognizes the last 50 years as the formative era of the modern sport business industry. As colleges and universities graduate their 2019 classes of aspiring career professionals, this is a rare opportunity to hear from some of the industry’s most influential players. Consider that according to Forbes and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the U.S. Sports Industry will be an $80 billion annual category by 2022. Job growth across all sports-related industries is expanding at over 12 percent annually — more than double the national job market. In markets like Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Miami, Dallas, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, sports-related job growth is increasing at or above 20% annually. The global sports industry is estimated to be a $1.3 trillion category. Sports media is the fastest-growing segment of the industry. As a subset of that, legalized sports gambling represents a multi-billion-dollar category poised to grow exponentially, as evidenced by casino and mobile sports betting legalized in Iowa last Monday. So if you have a child poised to join the workforce post college, they could do a lot worse than a career in sports.
The NCAA is opening the door for college athletes to be compensated for their names, images and likenesses. The Washington Post reported that the NCAA is examining how its rules can be modified to allow the change. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will head a new working group on the topic. “This group will bring together diverse opinions from the membership — from presidents and commissioners to student-athletes — that will examine the NCAA’s position on name, image and likeness benefits and potentially propose rule modifications tethered to education,” Ackerman said in a statement. In most scenarios, NCAA rules forbid its athletes from receiving benefits or compensation for their names, images and likenesses from either a school or a third party, including commercial contracts. While the working group will not consider any concepts that “could be construed as payment for participation in college sports,” the NCAA says that its mission is to “provide [an] opportunity for students to compete against other students [that] prohibits any contemplation of pay-for-play.” A final report is due to the NCAA’s board of governors in October.
The Indianapolis 500 will likely be the first time a CBD sponsorship will be featured during an official IndyCar race. The development comes after Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (ASPM) last Thursday announced a partnership with CBD-based sports drink Defy, according to the Indianapolis Star. The product’s name will appear on both James Hinchliffe’s No. 5 and Marcus Ericsson’s No. 7 entry. CBD has been legal in Indiana since March 2018, and the growing CBD industry has the "potential to become a new revenue source for teams." That comes amid plenty of examples of "drivers struggling to find sponsors," including Kyle Kaiser's No. 32 car from Juncos Racing. ASPM Team President Jon Flack said that fellow team sponsors, IndyCar and NBC were "all open to and approved the idea of allowing sponsorships that advertise products containing CBD." Interestingly, while THC level in Defy is allegedly well below the 0.3% allowed, IndyCar drivers can’t drink it because CBD is on the organization’s banned substance list. As the CBD market grows across the country, it is fair to wonder what sponsorship effect it will have on IndyCar.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation "allowing gambling on college and professional sports in Iowa," according to the Des Moines Register. The new legislation "allows Iowans 21 years and older to wager on sporting events at any of Iowa's 19 casinos and online if they visit a casino once in person to prove they are at least 21." It also "legalizes bets on fantasy sports through websites and apps like DraftKings and FanDuel." The law "does not allow in-game proposition bets on college sports." While the legislation "takes effect immediately, some of the rules still need to be ironed out." The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which will regulate sports betting in Iowa, previously said that it would "start to develop rules for casinos to implement after Reynolds signed the legislation." Those rules "would likely be implemented in July or August," before college sports and NFL games start. Iowa is only the latest state to allow legal sports wagering, and with every state that signs on, the stakes – and the potential revenues – rise considerably.

US Club Soccer’s mission is to foster the growth and development of soccer clubs throughout the country to create the best possible development environment for players of all ages in every club. The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, home to the Oakland A’s and Raiders, is set to become the Ring Central Coliseum. Belmont-based communications firm Ring Central has sealed a three-year, $3 million naming rights deal for the 56,000-seater stadium, including an option for a fourth year. Ring Central will assume a role last held by Overstock.com, which pulled out of its $1.45 million-a-year deal with the Coliseum after the Raiders announced plans in 2016 to relocate to Las Vegas. Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will soon become RingCentral Coliseum, as the California-based business communications provider is buying the naming rights and will pay $1 million a year for the "next three years, with an option for a fourth year." As the stadium authority approved the deal, the "name change would go into effect immediately." Even though the Oakland pro sports universe is undergoing seismic change, as the Raiders prepare for their Vegas move and the Warriors head to San Francisco, its signature sports facility remains an attractive target for brands.
Trump tariffs will impact sports, and sports fans. $11.4 billion. That’s the total value of the footwear imported from China to the U.S. last year as reported by SportsBusiness Daily. About 72% of sneakers imported to the U.S. are from China. The publication quoted CNBC’s Sara Eisen, who said of how the ongoing trade dispute is affecting the shoe industry, “These companies have been diversifying but there’s no denying that a lot of sneakers are still made in China.” So-called “sneaker wars” have long played a seminal role in basketball, soccer, and increasingly, in lifestyle brands popular in the U.S. and elsewhere. This may seem inconsequential compared to the toll expected in other industries like agriculture and electronics. But a prolonged sneaker tariff will have a lingering effect on the athlete pipeline, as those footwear brands have long funded the tournaments young athletes compete in in order to catch the attention of the pro ranks.
ESPN partners with Caesars for sports betting shows. According to Bloomberg, Caesars Entertainment Corp will have its odds data and branding integrated with ESPN programs. ESPN will put a studio inside Caesars’ Linq Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and build a new series of shows and videos aimed at the sports gambling market. The gaming corporation plans to contribute to programming on the ESPN network, ESPN’s website, and on the ESPN app. The sports betting content on ESPN’s betting-related content includes a few podcasts, segments on shows like “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines,” and a full sports gambling show called “Daily Wager,” which launched in March. Nearly a year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which federally legalized sports gambling, TV networks have jumped on the opportunity to boost their viewership through sports betting as many consumers use other devices and OTT platforms for entertainment.
LeBron James is partnering with Wal-Mart to "feed the hungry and inspire positive change in Akron and across the country." According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, James will be part of the retailer's "Fight Hunger Spark Change" campaign, which "raises money through donations and the purchase of participating products." The effort to date has raised $74 million, providing 749 million meals, with a goal of 1 billion meals. Wal-Mart will "keep the pantry at James' I Promise School stocked with food, toiletries, clothing and basic necessities." James and Wal-Mart will "support each other's education programs" starting this summer with a Back to School campaign.

Jr. Sam Cary heads clear a ball into the Howell North box in a win at Howell Central on April 19, 2018
This week’s Llywelyn’s Player of the Week is Sam Cary, Howell North is a young woman I first noticed as a U14 club player, a member of the SLSG Missouri 2001 ECNL team. There’s a picture in the small gallery below that will help you see the strides she’s made in building her game and her body for the coming rigors of Big 10 soccer for the Iowa Hawkeye’s. Beside’s her game she also exhibited an early ability to communicate with adults that made it easier for me to get to know her and her game.
My choice for Player of the Week because she can offer your child and wonderful example as an outside back, having developed the skill set that is in demand now and down the road. Her ability to get up and down the wing with her technical ability, pace and knowledge of the positions requirements. Need to defend speedy forwards? Check. Need to get into the attack? Check. Create offensive opportunities? Amen as Sam consistently delivers crosses into the box, while on the run, allowing her to shed defenders and give her team dangerous plays inside the 18. Her strength in this regard, especially with her left foot that makes her even more valuable, has led to her becoming the primary set piece provider on corners and free kicks. She can put a ball into the six yard box from 40 yards.
Get out and see her this Spring and take your kid along to see just how the position should be played.
Cary joined the St. Louis Scott Gallagher ECNL Program under the direction of Ralph Richards when she was 13 years old. Her ECNL team has qualified for ECNL Nationals 5 times and will be the top seed going into Nationals in June when her High School career ends and Club begins anew. With an undefeated conference record for the last two years, her ECNL club team has earned two consecutive ECNL Midwest Conference Championships. Through the ECNL, Cary has also been invited to two Midwest Player Identification Development Programs.
During Cary’s freshman season at Francis Howell North, FHN won their Class 4 District Championship with Cary being the leading goal scorer for her team as a left forward. She earned GAC First-Team All Conference, Class 4 First-Team All Region, and Class 4 Honorable Mention All State Honors. Cary once again earned First Team All-Conference, Class 4 All-Region and Class 4 Second Team All-State Honors as a leading scoring forward during her sophomore year. This year as a junior at FHN, Cary has moved into a defensive role as the team’s left full back. She helps organize the backline and the team’s set plays. As one of the team’s captains, Cary intends to impact her high school program by passing down her work ethic and commitment to the game to her teammates in the program. “When I started playing soccer I was never considered to be the most skilled or most technical player”, said Cary, “But by practicing intensely at every team practice and on my own I steadily improved. I hope to show others that hard work really does pay off.”
Cary is verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Iowa and will be signing her letter of intent this fall as she plans to graduate high school a semester early to start her training for the Hawkeyes in the spring of 2019. She currently intends to major in health and human physiology with the intention of ultimately becoming a soccer coach. “I’m excited for the opportunity to begin college a semester early for it will help me grow as a player and person and give me experience at the college level before my first Big Ten season.” Being on an extremely skilled and talented ECNL team gave Cary the opportunity to be seen by many colleges at ECNL national events. It has always been a goal of hers to play Big Ten soccer and she chose Iowa over numerous other offers because Iowa has the right academic and soccer fit for her. “Iowa felt like home”, said Cary. “It’s the place I can grow academically while making a contribution to their rising soccer program”.
Cary’s intensity and competitiveness on the field have been deeply rooted in her by her family. Although they were not athletes, her parents instilled a competitive drive and a high work ethic in her. They encouraged her to go out to the fields for additional practice and have been more than willing to help her train. This attitude has also led her to add extra training into her schedule such as strength, conditioning and weight training sessions before school on top of her after school practices.
Cary is not only a player but also spends many hours as a soccer referee. As a referee, she earned recognition as the 2016 Missouri Youth Referee of the Year and in 2018 Cary earned her Referee Certification for the Development Academy. Most weekends Cary refs DA and ECNL games in the St. Louis Area. She also has been a referee for Missouri State Cup the last two years and was invited to ref at USYSA Regionals last year in South Dakota. “Being an active referee helps me as a player because it keeps me constantly around the game of soccer and it helps me see certain decisions on the field to improve my tactical ability as a player.”
In addition to soccer, Cary serves as a sports photography editor in FHN’s nationally-recognized journalism program. She has also been inducted into the National Quill and Scroll Society, the honors organization for high school journalists. Besides photography Cary is a part of FHN’s live stream team and she writes articles for FHN’s yearbook and newspaper. In the last two weeks, Cary has received two individual national awards for her photography. A 12 year girl scout, Cary also recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and now serves on the Eastern Missouri Girl Scout Regional Board of Directors. Cary tied her passion for soccer into her Gold Award project by teaching local youth soccer players about nutrition and ways to stay healthy while being active. She has been an active participant in Youth Leadership St. Louis and is a member of her school’s International Thespian Society and National Honor Society. Despite her active schedule, she has consistently maintained a 4.7 GPA in high school.
FHN is currently 4-6-1 on the season.

Reading to your infant or young child is a beautiful bonding experience, but there’s far more happening in these literary moments beyond a parent and kid spending time together. In fact, explains pediatrician Jill Alexander, reading (or not reading) to children in the home can shape their entire academic future ― even if the little one is years away from going to school.
Speaking about the vital importance of reading on the monthly series “The Hero Effect,” Alexander emphasizes why reading to babies and children who are so young can have such a long-term impact. “We know that 90 percent of brain development happens before a child is 5,” she says. “If we wait until kids are in school, it’s too late.”
Children who are not read to in the home can suffer greatly once they enter school. Those from lower-income homes, Alexander continues, are believed to have a 30-million word gap when compared to their more affluent peers who have been read to, by the time they enter kindergarten. This can make catching up academically nearly impossible.
“If they’re not ready in kindergarten to start learning, they’re not going to be at grade-level by the time they’re in third grade. And if you’re not reading at grade-level in third grade, you get to fourth then fifth and we start having school truancy and dropping out of school,” Alexander says.
We know that 90 percent of brain development happens before a child is 5. Jill Alexander, pediatrician
To help promote literacy from an early age, Alexander spoke with like-minded family friend Carolyn Jons, the founder of Iowa’s “Raising Readers in Story County.” Jons was eager to lend the organization’s help to improve early language and literary development, so Alexander inquired about adopting the nationwide “Reach Out and Read” program for her pediatric practice.
“I said, ‘What I’d really like is to have a book to give at every well check-up for kids to encourage reading and get parents to start reading with their kids when they’re young,” Alexander says.
Thanks to the support of “Raising Readers in Story County,” Alexander’s patients soon saw the benefits of “Reach Out and Read.”
“It’s an amazing asset to our community,” says mom Gretchen Schaefer. “It helps kids get access to books and really helps us figure out that it’s very important for them to be reading and understand that it’s something we need to be doing at a very young age.”

High exposure to pesticides leads to genetic changes linked to cancer
A new study published in the journal Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis has found that high pesticide exposure events are associated with changes in DNA linked with prostate cancer. The study was part of the larger Agricultural Health Study, which seeks to understand occupational effects of pesticide exposure in farm workers and their families from Iowa and North Carolina. This study sampled DNA (via blood samples) from almost 700 male participants enrolled in the Agricultural Health Study. Participants were then asked to complete a survey in which they self reported pesticide exposure events. Almost 25 percent of participants reported at least one “unusually high pesticide exposure event.” Participants who reported high exposures were significantly more likely to have elevated genetic changes on portions of DNA specifically linked with increased prostate cancer risk. These results reinforce the argument that even when chemical exposures are not acutely toxic (i.e. don’t result in immediate death or illness), they may still lead to negative health consequences in the future.

15+5+5 To Watch 52019
15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 20
with Jacob Aere
The WNBA officially has a new commissioner. Last week, the league named Cathy Engelbert, current CEO of Deloitte and the first woman ever to lead a Big Four professional services firm in the U.S., to the role with a start on July 17. Engelbert, who played college basketball at Lehigh, becomes the fifth top WNBA exec in the league's history, following Val Ackerman, Donna Orender, Laurel Richie, and Lisa Borders. One thing Engelbert "will have to deal with relatively quickly," according to SportsBusiness Journal, is the current CBA, which expired after this season. “Cathy is a world-class business leader with a deep connection to women’s basketball, which makes her the ideal person to lead the WNBA into its next phase of growth,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “The WNBA will benefit significantly from her more than 30 years of business and operational experience including revenue generation, sharp entrepreneurial instincts and proven management abilities.” The WNBA took seven months to name its new leader, but it was worth the wait.
Thanks to an exploding NBA salary cap and a wild NHL postseason that saw many of the league's highest-paid players sent home early, the salary disparity between the two leagues has never been more glaring. Axis Sports notes that not a single player left in the Stanley Cup playoffs makes more than San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns' $10 million — a salary that would rank eighth-highest on the Milwaukee Bucks, alone. Burns' salary would rank seventh-highest on the Portland Trail Blazers; sixth-highest on the Golden State Warriors; fifth-highest on the Toronto Raptors; and just 23rd-highest amongst all remaining NBA players. It's also nearly four times less than Steph Curry's salary ($37.5 million), and more than three times less than Kyle Lowry's ($31.2 million). Additionally, San Jose's Logan Couture is the NHL postseason's leading point-scorer, and he's making $6 million this season…Portland's Meyers Leonard will make almost twice that much ($10.6 million), and he's played a total of 82 minutes in the playoffs. Tellingly, the just-vanquished Carolina Hurricanes’ highest-paid player, Jordan Staal, makes just $6 million — $1 million less than what the Bucks are paying journeyman Ersan Ilyasova ($7 million).
New Orleans winning the lottery capped a wild NBA Draft Lottery night that saw three teams jump way up in the draft order. Winners, according to Axios Sports: the Pelicans (projected to get the No. 7 pick, jumped to No. 1), the Grizzlies (projected to get No. 8, jumped to No. 2) and the Lakers (projected to get No. 11, jumped to No. 4). Losers: The Knicks, Cavaliers, and Suns all had the best chances to land the No. 1 pick (14%), but ultimately ended up with picks Nos. 3, 5, and 6. Having the league's worst record gave you a 25% chance of winning the top pick, with each subsequent lottery pick having a lesser chance of winning. The NBA flattened out the percentages to make it less appealing to have a worse record (aka, "tank"), so the league must be thrilled with last night's outcome. This is exactly what they wanted to see happen. The NBA offseason, and all the drama that comes with it, is officially off to the races. Meanwhile, the playoffs are in full swing.
David Beckham has acquired full ownership of Beckham Brand Holdings by "buying out the minority stake" held by Simon Fuller for around $50 million, according to the Financial Times. The 33% stake in the company, according to SportsPro, had been held by Fuller's XIX Entertainment. The deal gives Beckham and his wife, Victoria, "full control of the company, which manages his partnerships and brands." It contains stakes in Seven Global and David Beckham Ventures, as well as a piece of MLS expansion club Inter Miami. Beckham Brand Holdings was founded in 2014, as Beckham has "built a personal branding empire, partnering with brands such as L'Oreal and Adidas.” Forbes further noted that Beckham is now "truly a global brand," and he "appears to be getting a good deal, buying back his company at just nine times earnings.” While pro sports ownership is the pinnacle achievement for most MLS franchise owners, Beckham is clearly breaking the mold with his Florida MLS team ownership – expect landmark branding deals around that club.

U.S. Club Soccer members will receive special discounts to Dick’s Sporting Goods stores throughout the country and online, while Dick’s Sporting Goods is presented to U.S. Club Soccer’s growing community of members through various digital, social, and on-site marketing efforts. US Club Soccer’s mission is to foster the growth and development of soccer clubs throughout the country to create the best possible development environment for players of all ages in every club. U.S. Club Soccer also prides itself on fostering the safest environment for players in youth sports – to whit, they’ve implemented best-in-class background checks for all registered staff, and require personnel to complete an online injury recognition course, as well as SafeSport online training.
Just-concluded Upfronts detail the power of digital and social media broadcasting. According to Daily Hashtag, YouTube has 2 billion monthly unique users globally, CEO Susan Wojcicki shared at its Brandcast event in New York. The number is up 5% from the 1.9 billion monthly users YouTube announced last summer. Wojcicki said watch time of YouTube on TV screens was more than 250 million hours per day as of March 2019, a rise of 39% in less than a year. In other top lines, YouTube is going to make all original scripted and unscripted programming – including series Cobra Kai and Liza On Demand – available for free, ad-supported viewing starting later this year in post-SVOD windows. Likewise, Twitter announced a deal with Univision Communications that will deliver more sports, news, and entertainment content to its Spanish-language users, including analysis of the 2020 presidential race and soccer highlights. The social media giant also unveiled agreements for content from the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine. New initiatives with previous partners include shows and brand extensions with the NFL, ESPN, Viacom, MLS, Live Nation, and Activision Blizzard. Sports remain a key part of the streaming universe.
La Liga is still exploring the possibility of staging a top-flight Spanish soccer game in the U.S. as part of wider plans to grow internationally, according to Keegan Pierce, the league’s UK and Ireland delegate. The Spanish soccer body signed an extensive 15-year deal with Relevent Sports in August 2018 to roll out a number of initiatives in North America, including the potential to stage a regular season match in the region. Barcelona was slated to take on Girona in Miami in January in the first instalment of that partnership, but the club canceled due to a lack of consensus between the league, the Spanish Football Federation and FIFA. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu reaffirmed the club’s desire to play La Liga games outside of Spain. La Liga has been taking significant steps in recent years to boost its international profile in an attempt to close the revenue gap to England’s Premier League, including opening offices abroad and launching a global network initiative which sees more than 40 delegates represent the Spanish league in countries around the world. La Liga’s latest financial report released last week showed that revenue has climbed to a record $5 billion.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. According to multiple New York-type sources, the Mets and Sony Pictures Television have announced a "new partnership that will bring 'Seinfeld Night' to Citi Field" on July 5, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the sitcom's premiere on NBC. Jerry Seinfeld and SNY's Keith Hernandez "will reunite for a day about nothing" before the Mets host the Phillies that night. Adds the NewYork Daily News, the team will "kick off the night with a Jerry Seinfeld co-branded bobblehead, available to the first 25,000 fans who arrive at the ballpark.” Seinfeld "will be on hand for trivia with fans," and actor Larry Thomas -- the "'Soup Nazi' character from the show -- will be greeting ticket-holders on the concourse." Meanwhile, the Dodgers are "also doing a 30th anniversary 'Seinfeld' tribute" that week. To that, we say, “Yada yada yada.”
Top Five Tech
UFC and Chinese social media platform Weibo partner for a larger overseas profile. According to SportsPro, Weibo will become the official social media partner of the UFC in China. This is the first time that MMA has broken into China with a variety of content for new fans including exclusive interviews, highlights, fight announcements and more. Furthermore, the UFC has built the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai which is its most robust center to date. Highlights from UFC matches will also be shown and the center which is touted by the UFC as the world’s largest MMA facility. Reportedly, the complex costs US$13 million to build, and is set to open in the second quarter of 2019. There has been a rising popularity of MMA in China partly thanks to its homegrown stars of straw weight Weili Zhang, bantamweight Yadong Song and welterweight Li Jingliang. Getting online in China will help the MMA combat other losses that it may be expecting due to more OTT leagues encroaching in the MMA territory.
Sinclair Broadcasting has a base for sports betting. According to The Lines, Sinclair Broadcasting Corp CEO Chris Ripley plans to eventually allow viewers to place bets right from their screens during live games. The television broadcasting company is already in talks with sportsbook operators about creating in-game wagering for the Tennis Channel and eventually plans to allow legalized gambling on all of its recently added RSNs. All of this comes after news of Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired 21 regional sports networks (RSNs) from Disney for over $10 billion where the company saw its stock rise nearly 30% after the deal had been completed. Down the road, Sinclair expects to generate $1.5 billion to $2 billion in ad revenue from sportsbook operators and companies targeting sports bettors. While Sinclair can’t alter national broadcasts, they could tailor regional programming before and after towards sports betting and create alternate broadcasts similar to what NBC has displayed for teams in Washington and Philadelphia.
VR Color Analysis will be delivered by ex-Pistons’ player Rip Hamilton for the NBA Conference Finals. According to SportTechie, Intel will be the brains behind the production team of the VR broadcast while Hamilton will be accompanied by seasoned NBA broadcaster Stephanie Ready. 2019 marks the second full year that the tech company is a virtual reality broadcast partner for the NBA on TNT. Last year, Intel and Turner streamed seven games in virtual reality during the regular season, and a more than a dozen games during the playoffs. Oculus NBA on the TNT VR app provided fans given access to live games this past year with full-game replays and highlights. Intel streamed 10 regular season games beginning in December, the All-Star weekend, and eight playoff games prior to the Eastern Conference Finals. Now the full series between the Toronto Raptors and the Milwaukee Bucks will be available in VR. Intel has updated their stereoscopic cameras, and in-game statistics to give tech-oriented fans fully immersive and personalized experience.
2019 Women’s World Cup fever finds its way to Snapchat. According to Fast Company, Nike has launched a new Snapchat Lens that allows fans of the U.S. women’s national soccer to try on and buy the team’s new kit before the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France in June. Fans can pick between the home and away jerseys through an AR filter, then a quick swipe-up will take you to nike.com for an instantaneous purchase of the new kits. Nike broke social media waves last year when it became the first brand to sell a product directly through Snapchat by making the Air Jordan III “Tinker” available via special Snap codes. This new AR filter was only available for a day, but the soccer kits prove that women in sport are getting a serious marketing push as it marked the first time that the brand has ever done a shoppable lens for apparel on Snapchat.
Power of Sports Five
McCourty twins honored by Rutgers for their commitment to service. Last week, New England Patriots defensive stars Devin and Jason McCourty returned to their alma mater Rutgers to be honored by the school: the twin brothers received honorary degrees on Sunday, May 19 when they also addressed graduates at Rutgers University as this year’s commencement speakers. “The McCourtys often return to Rutgers to inspire current Scarlet Knights and to lead fundraising events with Embrace Kids Foundation, which helps families whose children are facing cancer, sickle cell and other serious health challenges,” the school wrote on its website. “The McCourtys have also been strong advocates in the fight for criminal justice reform, fair educational funding and racial equality at the federal, state and local levels through awareness, education and allocation of resources.” Three months after the Patriots’ Super Bowl win, the two realized the next honor bestowed upon them.
Ted Leonsis is the owner of the Washington Capitals, Wizards, Mystics, and Capital One Arena and has a plan to get the D.C. punk band Fugazi back and playing together. Leonsis said that he would compensate the band, and make a major donation to local charities around Washington D.C. in their names. Fugazi hasn’t been playing together since 2003, however the four members were recently reunited due to a museum exhibition called “Action. Reaction. Action: Visualizing Fugazi” at the Lost Origins Gallery in D.C. According to WTOP, the exhibit fittingly explored the impact of the band, both as musicians and activists. Whether or not the punk band reunites, their activism has already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars thanks to their fame and keenness for charity.
Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson honors his late friend through a youth-focused charity. In May, 2016 the shortstop received the terrible message that his best friend Branden Moss had passed away from a shooting. In order to keep his friend’s legacy going, he created Anderson’s League of Leaders. Since the charity's inception in 2017, Anderson and his wife, Bria, have helped organize back-to-school haircuts for kids, provide school supplies, host Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for those less privileged and run free youth baseball camps. There is also a scholarship in Moss’s name, providing $1,000 for students from their high school affected by violence. Anderson is proving to be a role model for kids all over the nation and particularly for African-American kids from the Southside of Chicago. He makes sure to educate youth about the history of black players in baseball while this year he has pledged to donate $500 to his charity for each time that he steals a base during the 2019 season – he’s already at 13, and it’s just mid May.
"Final Whistle On Hate" charity soccer match drew a crowd of 27,329 to Gillette Stadium. As EPL club Chelsea topped the Revolution 3-0, Bruce Arena was in attendance, with the Revolution set to formally announce that he will be "tabbed with the dual roles" of coach and Sporting Director. It is "not known exactly when Arena will assume his new posts." The match "helped raise funds for organizations that oppose discrimination and hate crimes," according to the Boston Herald. And the Boston Sports Journal noted the event raised more than $4 million, with $1 million each from Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich and Revolution owner Robert Kraft.

WASHINGTON ― Senators wanted to know Tuesday whether President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the health department harbors weird views on vaccines like the president does.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) bluntly asked Tom Price whether he believes vaccines cause autism, a discredited conspiracy theory that Trump has long espoused.
“I think the science in that instance is that it does not,” Price said.
Price, an orthopedic surgeon, started saying something about “individuals across our country” but Menendez cut him off.
“I’m not asking about individuals,” Menendez said. “I’m talking about science. You’re going to head a department in which science, not alternate universes of people’s views, is going to be central to a trillion-dollar budget and the health of the nation.”
The senator asked if Price would commit to the American people that as health secretary, he would swiftly “debunk false claims to protect the public health.” Price said he would “make certain that factual informing is conveyed to Congress and the president and the American people.”
Amy Pisani called the answer reassuring. Pisani is the director of Every Child By Two, an organization co-founded by former first lady Rosalynn Carter in 1991 to promote public immunization policies.
The Department of Health and Human Services, Pisani said, “will be responsible for allocating precious resources through the budget and all research ought to be dictated by scientific evidence rather than, as Mendendez put it, ‘alternate universes of people’s views.’”
Vaccination has eradicated a number of diseases from the U.S. and the world, and all 50 states require parents to have their children vaccinated before sending them to school or daycare. Proponents of the bogus vaccine-autism link have advocated for more exemptions to those state laws, which public health experts say is basically doing diseases a favor.
In light of the president’s fringe beliefs, last week Every Child By Two and dozens of other groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, asked senators to get Price to commit to vaccines.
Later in the hearing, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) asked whether Price, as a physician, believed parents should get their kids vaccinated according to the schedule set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is part of the health department. Price didn’t exactly say that they should.
“I think that the science and healthcare has identified a very important aspect of public health, and that is the role of vaccinations,” he said.

Republicans' New 'Heartbeat' Abortion Bill Is Based On Bad Science
//<![CDATA[ function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){'undefined'!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if('object'==typeof commercial_video){var a='',o='m.fwsitesection='+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video['package']){var c='&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D'+commercial_video['package'];a+=c}e.setAttribute('vdb_params',a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById('vidible_1'),onPlayerReadyVidible); //]]>
Congressional Republicans have introduced a federal heartbeat bill, a controversial measure that would ban abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected, about six weeks into the pregnancy.
U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who introduced the bill last week, did not respond to a request for comment about why fetal heartbeats are at the center of the proposed law.
Even setting aside the serious reproductive health implications of such a ban, bills that use a “fetal heartbeat” as any kind of benchmark are based on a flawed understanding of science. Such bills are of a piece with the dismayingly widespread scientific illiteracy among legislators. (Take, for instance, the RNC platforms on pornography as a health problem and support of abstinence-only sex education, two stances that are not rooted in scientific evidence; this is to say nothing of many policymakers’ dangerously wrongheaded attitudes toward climate change.)
“There is no scientific basis for prohibiting a woman from obtaining an abortion whether there is or isn’t a heartbeat present,” Dr. David Eisenberg, a board-certified OB-GYN and abortion provider in St. Louis, told The Huffington Post.
‘Heartbeat’ bills fundamentally misunderstand fetal development
When you’re talking about a fetus, the term “heartbeat” isn’t even really accurate. A fetal heartbeat is typically detectable at around five or six weeks into a pregnancy, according to Dr. Rebecca Cohen, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado.
“It’s not a fully formed heart like you would understand from looking at an adult or even a young child,” Cohen said. “It’s a very early structure. We can see it on the ultrasound, but it’s not a heart, a fully developed organ, by any means.”
Moreover, cardiac activity isn’t a credible measure of fetal viability. This preliminary activity starts at a point in the pregnancy where there’s still a significant risk of miscarriage, and no real guarantee that the pregnancy will continue to be a healthy, uncomplicated one.
“Even with seeing that cardiac activity, about 5 to 10 percent of pregnancies will go on to miscarry, because there are other abnormalities that we can’t detect on the ultrasound at those early stages,” Cohen said.
‘Heartbeat’ bills create an extremely narrow abortion window
Then there’s the fact that the six-week window works against women who aren’t actively planning pregnancy, who might not be carefully tracking their menstrual cycles, or who have irregular cycles. There’s also such a thing as it being too early in a pregnancy to have an abortion.
In the very early stages after conception, it’s difficult to tell whether a pregnancy will grow normally, or whether it’s even located in the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies, where the fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus, occur in about 20 out of every 1,000 pregnancies, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Doctors use transvaginal ultrasounds to determine whether a pregnancy is ectopic, but that diagnostic method isn’t necessarily reliable until four or five weeks into a pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies may also require surgery, so it’s important that doctors are certain about the diagnosis before they terminate a pregnancy.
“It’s actually a very, very narrow window,” Cohen said. “It can’t be too early, it can’t be too late, now with these potential bills.”
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposed King’s legislation, telling HuffPost: “H.R. 490 places politicians squarely between America’s women and their physicians. We stand strong against turning back the clock on women’s health.”
Restrictive abortion bills have a history of bad science
In December, Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) declined to sign a six-week fetal heartbeat abortion ban in favor of a 20-week abortion ban, which more than a dozen other states already have in place.
“It’s politically clever,” Cohen said. “By introducing those two bills at the same time, the 20-week ban doesn’t look so bad.”
But it is. For starters, only about 1 percent of abortions take place after 20 weeks, and those are nearly always due to a previously undetectable fetal abnormality. In practice, this means the women most affected by 20-week bans tend to be those carrying fetuses with severe birth defects.
Financial and logistical burdens aside, 20-week abortion bans don’t make much sense from a medical perspective.
Twenty-week bans are based on the idea that fetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks’ gestation, a supposition that’s scientifically murky at best. Doctors and researchers know very little about pain in adults, and discussions about fetal pain tend to rely on studies of fetal response to stimuli, which isn’t a reliable proxy for pain. Such discussions often devolve into theoretical arguments.
Then there’s the fact that fetuses rarely survive outside the womb at 20 weeks. That means 20-week bans are in tension with the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which protects a woman’s right to have an abortion until the fetus has a reasonable chance of surviving outside the womb.
Limiting abortion access leads to worse medical outcomes
Cohen warned that it’s a mistake to think limiting women’s access to abortion actually reduces the number of abortions performed.
“Those limits don’t prevent women from accessing abortion,” she said. “They only prevent women from accessing safe abortion.”
Unsafe abortions account for 13 percent of maternal deaths worldwide, a total of 21 million deaths in 2008 alone, according to the World Health Organization. Those unsafe abortions can involve self-inflicted bodily trauma, ingesting chemicals or dangerous drugs, or relying on people without formal training to perform abortions, sometimes in unhygienic conditions.
Lacking access to better treatment, some women order the abortion pill from illegal, unreliable or disreputable sources. In the U.S., women sometimes cross the border to purchase the drugs in Mexico.
“Although the medication regimens themselves are extremely safe, if you’re ordering it online, you can’t guarantee you’re actually getting what you think you’re getting,” Cohen said.
Unfortunately, women are pushed into such unsafe health decisions in part because of bills that have little basis in science.
“I have been involved in the provision of abortion care for over 15 years and can say that there is no rational, scientific, medical or public health reason that would make sense to prohibit women from obtaining the care they need,” Eisenberg said. “Bans such as these will not reduce the number of abortions, but will result in more women being hurt.”
