The Chase and Sanborn Hour
December 11 was the birthday of a distant relative of mine, Caleb Chase (1831-1908), who, with partner James Solomon Sanborn (1835-1903) formed the Chase and Sanborn Coffee Company in 1862. They’re the first coffee company to sell their product in those tin coffee cans! or so they claim. But this ain’t a coffee blog, even though we did do a Maxwell House post two days ago (and I assure you, that…

Jane McMahon Allen: Childhood Anecdotes (Interview 1)
I devoted my first interview to my mother. We sat down last week, and she shared very detailed accounts of her childhood playmates, neighbors, parents, siblings, hobbies, and toys. She has been a Rochesterian herself living at 394 Winton Road North while attending graduate school at Eastman School of Music, a division of The University of Rochester. Last week we discussed some of her childhood…

Love, Bad Decisions, Cocaine, and Angst from Brother's Keeper to Freefall
Here before you lies the entirety of all my Miami Vice fiction, compiled in one place! The Sonny/Rico fics follow the series from beginning to end, and are intended to be a reasonably canon-compliant explanation of their relationship, tied to specific episodes. There's also two Gina/Trudy fics and one Switek/Zito fic; the implication is they take place concurrently. (Yes, everyone on Vice squad is queer. No, I don't care that that implies some very strange things are happening in the Miami PD hiring department.) Pretty much all fics contain angst, language, internalized homophobia, and period typical attitudes, but the series ends happily as a whole! Rating beside title.
Sonny/Rico Fics:
Ashes in a Goldfish Bowl - M - S1E19 Made for Each Other - Sonny contemplates a growing and awkward crush on his coworker.
Gas Station Confessional - M - S1E22 Evan - As he learns about Evan Freed, Rico pieces together that Sonny may be hiding more than he's letting on.
Unnecessary Medicine - M - S2E5 & 8 The Dutch Oven & Tale of the Goat - Sonny is dosed with cocaine; later, Rico is dosed with tetrodotoxin. They take care of one another.
Adventures in Microwave Sales - E - S2E9 Bushido - In the aftermath of Jack Gretzky, Sonny decides life is too short not to take Rico up on his offer to be friends with benefits.
Faults and Hairline Fractures - E - S3E12 Down for the Count - After their friend's death, Rico notices that Sonny seems uncharacteristically upbeat after months of brooding.
The Naming of Cats - E - S4E3 Death and the Lady - Sonny lets his guard down while he and Rico take care of a kitten for Gina, and hates himself for it.
Wise Men Say, "Only Fools..." - M - S4E8 Like a Hurricane - After Sonny's wedding, Rico makes a series of bad decisions.
Playing House - M - S4E20 A Bullet for Crockett - With Rico taking care of him after being shot, Sonny chafes against the constraints of his marriage, and questions his choices.
Repossession - M - S5E12 Jack of All Trades (or around there) - Rico is incredibly concerned and hurt as an increasingly depressed and listless Sonny gets very drunk at an auction.
Take Me Home - E S5E18 Freefall - If Sonny and Rico have any hope of moving on together, they need to push past five years of refusing to communicate and be honest with one another.
And Life Goes on Beside the Palisades - T - Post-series - Crossover with Wiseguy - Sonny and Rico have settled into their life together in New York. A chance encounter with another pair of ex-agents gives everyone an opportunity to reflect on where they want to go from here.
Trudy/Gina:
Not Like a Painting - T - S2E8 Tale of the Goat (or around there) - Trudy suggests playing hooky, and wonders if Gina knows she's acting like they're on a date.
Warfarin, Eggs, and Chase & Sanborn - E - S2E9 Bushido - Gina worries that Trudy might not return her attraction, and they find out where they stand during a series of all-nighters.
Stan/Larry:
Wearin' That Loved On Look - E - Late S1/Early S2 - Larry tries not to think too hard about what happens sometimes in the Bug Van.

today’s scanned magazine: Good Housekeeping, March 1930
Weighing in at 308 pages for only 25 cents in 1930, this magazine is pretty hefty, and I scanned 28 items from it but read the vast majority of one long story to see how it ended. (Abruptly, that’s how it ended!) Here is a smattering of what was going on... after the cut.
Tumblr media
Tumblr, in a nutshell. And by the way, in this story, the girl was fairly successful because she had 5 older (but elementary age and younger) brothers that she could knock the tar out of and she skinned a mean ‘possum.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting 3-in-1 Oil, which is still sold (and was purchased by their competition, WD-40), to be suggested as a furniture polish. Their current website does not confirm the product containts animal or vegetable oils.
Tumblr media
I was not expecting 20 Mule Team Borax, also still in production as a laundry aid, to be promoting using their product as a mouthwash. I mean, it won’t hurt a person and is less reactive than baking soda, but still...
Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting Drano to promote itself as a gas range cleaner. Not terribly surprised, since (in a similar vein) Sani-Flush toilet cleaner has always run ads in automotive magazines saying that it will clean out radiators, but using Drano in the place of, say, Easy-Off oven cleaner is a new one for me.
Tumblr media
Okay, let’s get into celebrity endorsements. Totally didn’t see George Gershwin plugging Chase & Sanborn Coffee, but even Broadway musicians need money. I got rhythm, I got music, I got coffee / Who could ask for anything more?
And in the post previous to this one, silent film star Clara Bow endorsed Lux facial soap, so you can see that one on its own. Meanwhile:
Tumblr media
Now we have film legend Rudy Vallée hocking Fleischmann’s Yeast as a meal supplement -- and this wasn’t the only ad in the magazine telling you to eat 3 cakes of yeast per day. To set up a joke, I will quote another brand:
Tumblr media
Which kinda makes sense because another Fleischmann’s Yeast ad in this issue (suggesting feeding it to babies) says that yeast is a gentle laxative... so everyday Miss has a BM, and that can definitely help your vitality.
Tumblr media
That’s right, Thomas Edison invented (or at least lent his name to) a better toaster.
I have two more (non-advertising! interesting historic!) items to share... in this post. So I will end this massive missive with a can of beans with a chuckle-worthy name, made by a company that still slings beans, Van Camps. Don’t ask where your cornhole is, and do not put this product in your presumed ‘bean-holes’ because your mom told you not to:

An obscene joke got past the censors when comedian Fred Allen guested on an episode of the Chase and Sanborn Hour starring Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.
The premise was that Fred Allen was unemployed. Edgar Bergen recalled:
“He was out of work and he was going to team up with Charlie...
He [Fred Allen] says, ‘Oh, thank you, thank you, Mr. McCarthy. I kiss the hem of your tuxedo!’
He [Charlie McCarthy] said, ‘It’s a tailcoat.’
He [Fred Allen] said, ‘In that case, I’ll blow you.’
Well, we got away with that.”
