𓆩♡𓆪 skz during nabo borsho. 𓆩♡𓆪
BANG CHAN would be the first to wake up. He's been practicing how to pronounce 'nobo borsho' properly all night. You're fast asleep, excited at the prospect of New Years coming the next day. As soon as it's midnight, he pokes the side of your stomach. "Shubho... shubho nabo borsho babe," he says with the biggest smile. (Ugh. This man.)
LEE MINHO is watching you pick out the best, most fresh hilsa for nabo borsho. You are not settling for any less. He watches you talk in rapid Bengali with a smile on his face. When you're finally home, he's already put the leftover rice in water and is standing in front of you with an eager smile, aprons and spatula in hand. (Bonus: He remembers to but kashundi! Get yourself a man that buys you kashundi!)
SEO CHANGBIN is helping the rest of the Bengali cultural committee where you live haul the numerous boxes of prasad from the truck to the distribution center. He flashes you a big smile, enamored by you. Living with you has caused him to pick up enough Bengali to slightly understand what everyone is saying. Regardless of that though, he is all the thakuma's favorite. (Because why not?)
HWANG HYUNJIN watches you get ready. He knows you're not good at putting on a sari, and so, after numerous Youtube tutorials, he pre-pleats your sari and keeps it ready for you. When you shoo him out of your room to go socialize, he helps your younger cousins in making a rangoli, thinking of you fondly. (No wonder it suspiciously looks like a rose with your initials.)
HAN JISUNG clears his throat loudly in the comfort of your home and starts singing. At first you're confused, but then you realize that he's singing "Aye Re Chuti Aye." You tell him that it's the wrong holiday and he looks distressed, just to give you a Han Jisung concert with the right songs two hours later. (Ok but IMAGINE HIM SINGING ARIJIT SINGH?!?!)
LEE FELIX will not let you inside the kitchen at all. Absolutely not. You can see him hard at work, although you have next to no idea why. His brow is scrunched as he's taking extremely precise measurements and ushering you out. Finally, he comes up to you. "So... I... Um... tried to make payesh-" you're to busy attacking him with a hug to let him finish. (And btw, it's almost as good as your didda's!)
KIM SEUNGMIN is wearing a white kurta. He's wearing chappals. He's sitting on the floor with a banana leaf and is absolutely determined to celebrate nabo borsho the way your family does every year. He eats with his hands, attempts to converse in broken Bengali and wins over your family in every way possible. (I love him sm.)
YANG JEONGIN is the loudest person in the crowd as you're dancing during the cultural fest you have partaken in. He has spent weeks with you, helping you to rehearse. He even picked out your outfit and jewelry, and it couldn't be more perfect. He gets you food and water as soon as you're off the stage and smothers you with kisses. (He would probably offer to sing a duet with you too, and who knows, you might just take him up on that offer.)
a/n: ok so this was entirely self-indulgent lmao. i'm really sorry if you don't understand half the stuff on here but to my bengalis (and anybody else with their new years today) SHUBHO NABO BORSHO AND HAPPY NEW YEAR LOVELIES!

Hariprasad Chaurasia, George Harrison, and Shivkumar Sharma, 1973; photographer unnamed, photo courtesy of hariprasadchaurasia dot com.
“George used to always say that if ever you are not feeling right, you should listen to Bob Dylan’s ‘Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie’ and [Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma and Brij Bhushan Kabra’s] ‘Call of the Valley.’” - Olivia Harrison, The Hollywood Reporter, October 22, 2011 “‘Bhoop Ghara’ from Call of the Valley, recorded in 1967 by Shivkumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasia and slide guitar player Brijbhusan Kabra, was ‘something George had on our juke box. We played it as a remedy in our home if you were feeling a certain way. Kabra was one of George’s heroes as a slide guitarist, up there with Ry Cooder,’ [Olivia explains].” - Songlines, June 2018 “[Ry Cooder] inspires me to try and play that [slide] better. At the same time, I’m into this Indian music and there’s a guy called Brijbushan Kabra who plays a guitar but he plays it like a lap steel, he lays it on his leg, and plays it with the slide on top, like, and restrung it and plays sort of groovy Indian stuff on it.” - George Harrison, Rockline, February 10, 1988 “[Hariprasad] Chaurasia’s face lights up as The Beatles guitarist and songwriter George Harrison’s name is mentioned. ‘We were very close friends, or, at least, that is what I believe. He used to come to India every year, especially to go to Vrindavan. And, whenever he came, he would come to my Bandra residence at times, with his then-girlfriend, Olivia. Every time we met, we used to play music together,’ says Chaurasia. [...] ‘One of the best musicians I ever met, George loved Indian music and had a deep understanding of it. He made an attempt to learn the sitar, and though he played it for himself, he did not want to play it in front of an audience,’ says Chaurasia. When asked what Harrison was like as an individual, the maestro was quick with his response: ‘George was a great human being. He treated everyone equally, irrespective of his or her race or nationality. I remember George would always remove his shoes or chappals before entering anyone’s house,’ he says. Harrison loved everything Indian — culture, traditions and food. 'So much so that he that he wanted to be born in India in his next life. He used to go to the Lord Krishna temple at Mathura, with his face covered with a shawl to avoid recognition. He enjoyed going to the temple alone and collecting prasadam. He loved listening to the dholak and the singing and dancing. His favorite place in India was Vrindavan and said that he could never find such an environment anywhere else in the world,’ says Chaurasia.” - The Week, February 17, 2018 (x)

Okay what Desi Parent™ thing do you think each of the dad sides do?
Because Patton will DEFINITELY feed his kids until they are bursting or pack 5 boxes of snacks for a one day trip
Okay so I'm gonna base all of these on things my dad has actually done.
Patton definitely has a barbecue every weekend in which he cooks so many tikkas to feed an army.
Janus as you said is the chappal parent, he has upgrade to the shoes that can easily be taken of so that he can attack a side. He also has that signature clap or tone in his voice that let's you know that you are doing something wrong.
Logan is the "back in my day" and just overshares a story that is heavily exaggerated but you can't say anything or you are getting the chappal.
The three of them would have guest and when it's time to leave they still spend like an extra hour outside their car talking about something.
Logan would take Eid/ Dilwani so seriously like everything has to be perfect of else death.

Today, I saw a child in ragged clothes trying to fit his gaunty chappals into two thermocol boxes. The size was so perfect that it seemed the boxes were moulded to fit his chappals only.
He was the merriest person I had seen since the day's beginning. He cheerfully told his fellow (ragged) mates that he would now be able to walk on steets flooded with naalas.
Amidst the bustle of a street flooded with walking corpses, I could see a lively face.
They say that what you see around you is a reflection of your inner self. I too tried finding my reflection in him and failed miserably.
While he put his new footwears aside to sit on a pavement, a frustrated young man drove over the pieces of thermocol— shattering the child's hope and smile as he picked the shambles of his broken footwear.
This time, when I looked at the frustrated driver and the child with his broken hopes, I found the saying true. What you see around is actually a reflection of your inner self.

the known heroine has come to udyati as a warning, and though it took a good deal of effort to find the young girl, whitney stands tall. hands upon her waist, nearly a disappointed mother. “you may not want to listen to me, but… be careful around ashton. you don’t know what he’s capable of.”
askbox fun // @temporarywiin (whitney english)
the bell rings and ankita pauses the movie - gangubai kathiawadi - while udyati gets up. “were you expecting anyone?” she asks her daughter, and udyati shakes her head.
when she opens the door, she’s in for the surprise of her life: whitney english is standing in the doorway. whitney freaking english! what even is her life right now?
“yaya, who’s at the door?!”
“amma, you’re never gonna believe me,” udyati calls back, “but it’s whitney english. you can continue the movie, i’ll be there in a minute!”
truthfully, udyati’s got half a mind to invite miss english in. it’s cold outside. but then she thinks of her mom, sitting in the living room, finally allowing herself to relax after everything she’s been through - after everything udyati’s put her through.
no.
she’ll step out.
the younger of the two closes the narrow hallway door and it is then and only then that she listens to whatever it is that miss english has come to tell her. she must’ve gone to great lengths. it’s not easy to find udyati. not when she doesn’t want to be found.
the blonde heroine stands tall, yes, but she almost looks like a disappointed mother, udyati thinks to herself. she would draw comparisons between miss english and her mom, but there aren’t any. not really, not quite.
she doubts that miss english would go for a chappal.
“first of all, if i didn’t want to listen to you, ma’am, i would’ve slammed the door in your face. proverbially. because doing that for real is impolite and my mom raised me better than that. secondly, you’re putting words in my mouth. you’re projecting your feelings onto me. respectfully, but why are you here, if you’re gonna lead with ‘you may not want to listen to me’? ‘cause that’s kind of a self fulfilling prophecy right there. you start with that and, yeah, i don’t want to listen, which then proves your own assumption.”
Tumblr media
“you’re right, i don’t know what ash is capable of. just like he doesn’t know what i’m capable of. just like i don’t know what you’re capable of and vice versa. but that isn’t a reason to treat him with kid gloves all of a sudden. if something’s wrong, i trust him to let me know. just like i’d let him know if something’s up with me.”
udyati runs a hand through her hair, half confused, half agitated. “so, uh, thank you, i suppose, for the warning. i appreciate it. but i’d appreciate it more if you were honest with me. playing six dimensional chess tends to get exhausting after a while.”
she’s leaning against the doorframe now, arms crossed. “are you here to tell me that ash is a threat? that he has the potential to be a threat? well, guess what, so am i. so are you. so is everyone. it’s what people do that matters. it’s their intention that matters. ash has chosen kindness. he wakes up and he chooses kindness day after day after day.”
udyati holds up a hand. she turns and vanishes down the hallway. after a couple of minutes, she comes back with a small box of indian sweets, which she then pushes into whitney’s hands.
“i do too. get home safely, miss english. oh, and happy almost new year.”
