Elizabeth II opened the British side of the Channel Tunnel in 1994, but who did the honours for the French?

In a 1994 ceremony presided over by England's Queen Elizabeth II and French President Francois Mitterrand, a rail tunnel under the English Channel was officially opened, connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time. The Channel Tunnel (or 'le tunnel sous la Manche') is a 50 kilometres (31 miles) underwater tunnel running from Folkestone, Kent in the United Kingdom to Calais in northern France.

François Mitterrand (1916-1996) was the President of France from 21st May 1981 until 17th May 1995. As President of France, he was also one of the Co-Princes of Andorra and abolished the death penalty in 1981. During his long time as president, several large architectural works were completed, including the Channel Tunnel, the Louvre Pyramid, the Bastille Opera House and the National Library of France.

On 6th May 1994, Queen Elizabeth II rode on a train through the tunnel, which stopped nose-to-nose with a train carrying President Mitterrand. This was part of the grand opening ceremony, which ended with both the Queen and President travelling together to Folkestone. Whilst the pair officially declared the tunnel open, it was several months before passenger trains began travelling between England and France.

Me and my bf were watching Mission Impossible the other day and at some point a character named Max said "Tunnel" but the subs said "Chunnel" and we were both weirded out by why would it be written that way. Were the subs making fun of her for being British? The Tunnel that connects France and England is being called a Chunnel. It's a pun name. My boyfriend hates it now.

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle: Passengers stuck for hours inside tunnel

Dozens of people were left stranded for hours inside the Channel Tunnel after a train from Calais to Folkestone appeared to have broken down.

Footage emerged showing Eurotunnel Le Shuttle passengers being evacuated through an emergency service tunnel after having to abandon their vehicles.

They were eventually transferred to a replacement train and taken to the Folkestone terminal in Kent.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said services were now back to normal.

Le Shuttle said Tuesday night's incident began when the train's alarms went off and this needed to be investigated.

A spokesman said such incidents were unusual but not exceptional - far more common on trains carrying lorries than those with private cars.

"The Shuttle was brought to a controlled stop and inspected. As a precautionary measure, for their safety and comfort, we transferred the passengers on-board to another shuttle, via the service tunnel [which is there for exactly that purpose]," the spokesman said.

"We brought them to the passenger terminal building, where food and drinks were available, and then slowly brought out the original shuttle and reunited them with their vehicles."

Sarah Fellows, 37, from Birmingham, told the PA news agency she found the service tunnel "terrifying".

She added: "It was like a disaster movie. You were just walking into the abyss not knowing what was happening. We all had to stay under the sea in this big queue.

"There was a woman crying in the tunnel, another woman having a panic attack who was travelling alone."
