PM's "140 Crore People" Reply To Lalu Yadav's "Modi Has No Family" Swipe

Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP today launched the "Modi Ka Parivar" campaign to counter Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Yadav's personal attack, in which the veteran leader said the Prime Minister has no family.

"Leaders of the INDI alliance, deeply engrossed in corruption, nepotism and appeasement, are becoming nervous. When I question their 'parivarvad', they say Modi has no family," the Prime Minister said at a rally in Telangana's Adilabad.

"My life is an open book, 140 crore people of the country are my family. Today, crores of daughters, mothers and sisters of the country are Modi's family. Every poor person in the country is my family. Those who have no one belong to Modi and Modi belongs to them," he added.

Top BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda, added "Modi ka parivar" to their social media handles today.

Addressing a rally of the INDIA Opposition bloc in Patna, Mr Prasad had yesterday hit back at the Prime Minister's charge of dynasty politics against Opposition parties, including RJD. "What can we do if Narendra Modi does not have a family of his own?" he had said. "He keeps bragging about the Ram temple. He is not even a true Hindu. In Hindu tradition, a son must shave his head and beard after the death of his parents. Modi did not do so when his mother died," he had said.

In a message of solidarity, top BJP leaders today added "Modi ka parivar" to their social media handles. The leaders who added the phrase, meaning "Modi's family", to their handles on X include Mr Shah, Mr Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Nitin Gadkari and Anurag Thakur, and veteran BJP leader and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his Uttarakhand counterpart Pushkar Singh Dhami have also joined in.

The "Modi ka parivar" campaign is on the lines of the "Main bhi chowkidar" drive ahead of the 2019 general election. BJP leaders had then added "Main bhi chowkidar (I am a watchman too)" to their social media handles to counter Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's "Chowkidaar chor hai" jab at the Prime Minister.

Mr Yadav's remarks on the Prime Minister yesterday drew a sharp response from BJP leaders in Bihar. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha yesterday described the remarks as "offensive" and "disrespectful". "The language used by Lalu Prasad against our PM shows his mindset. They (RJD) are against Sanatan Dharma and are trying to destroy the centuries-old tradition," he said. "They behave like political jokers. We must stop such forces. What our PM has done for Sanatan Dharma is well-known," he said.

'Corruption, Bribery Destroy…': Big Order On Legal Shield For MPs, MLAs

Lawmakers in parliament and state legislatures are not immune from prosecution in bribery cases, the Supreme Court said today in a landmark verdict by a seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

The verdict set aside a 1998 judgment in which a five-member Constitution bench had upheld the immunity for lawmakers in cases where MPs or MLAs take bribes for a speech or a vote in the House.

Bribery, the court said, is not protected by parliamentary privileges and the interpretation of the 1998 verdict is contrary to Articles 105 and 194 of the Constitution. These two Articles provide elected representatives legal immunity from prosecution to enable them to work without fear.

"We disagree with the judgment in PV Narasimha (case). The judgment in that case which granted immunity to legislators for taking bribes to cast votes has wide ramifications," the Chief Justice of India said.

The PV Narasimha Rao case had come up in connection with a no-confidence motion against his government in July 1993. The minority government had survived with a slim margin - 265 votes in favour and 251 against.

A year later, however, a scandal emerged and allegations surfaced that legislators of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had taken bribes to vote in support of the PV Narasimha Rao government. In 1998, the Supreme Court held that the lawmakers' immunity from prosecution extended to their votes and speeches inside the House.

The court today said a claim for immunity in such situations fails to pass the test of being necessary to discharge legislative functions.

"We hold that bribery is not protected by Parliamentary privileges. Corruption and bribery by legislators destroy the functioning of Indian Parliamentary democracy. An MLA taking a bribe to vote in Rajya Sabha elections is also liable under the Prevention of Corruption Act," the bench said.

The PV Narasimha judgment, the Chief Justice said, results in a "paradoxical situation" in which a legislator who accepts a bribe and votes accordingly is protected whereas a legislator who votes independently despite taking a bribe is prosecuted.

"You Abuse Your Right": Supreme Court To Stalin Junior On Sanatana Row

The Supreme Court today slammed Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin over his controversial statement advocating the "eradication" of Sanatana Dharma. A bench, consisting of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, questioned the minister's decision to approach the top court after making inflammatory remarks, stating that as a minister, he should be well aware of the consequences of his words.

"You abuse your right under Article 19(1)(a) (of the Constitution). You abuse your right under Article 25. Now you are exercising your right under Article 32 (to file plea in the Supreme Court)? Do you not know the consequences of what you said? You are not a layman. You are a minister. You should know the consequences," the Supreme Court bench said before adjourning the matter to March 15.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin, made the controversial statement during a conference in September 2023. He said that Sanatana Dharma is against social justice and equality and should be "eradicated." The remark ignited a massive backlash, particularly from BJP leaders who criticised the minister's comparison of Sanatana Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria.

The controversy escalated on social media, with the BJP accusing the Congress of supporting a "genocidal" call against Sanatana Dharma.

Udhayanidhi Stalin responded to the criticism on social media, denying that he called for the genocide of those following Sanatana Dharma. He argued that Sanatana Dharma perpetuates social divisions based on caste and religion and is fundamentally opposed to equality and social justice. The Tamil Nadu minister said he was ready to present the extensive writings of social activist Periyar and Dr BR Ambedkar, who conducted in-depth research on Sanatana Dharma.

"I am ready to present the extensive writings of Periyar and Ambedkar, who conducted in-depth research on Sanatana Dharma and its negative impact on society in any forum. Let me reiterate the crucial aspect of my speech: I believe, like the spread of diseases like COVID-19, Dengue, and Malaria by mosquitoes, that Sanatana Dharma is responsible for many social evils," Udhayanidhi Stalin wrote in a social media post last year.

"I am prepared to confront any challenges that come my way, whether in a court of law or the people's court. Stop spreading fake news," he added.

The official sale had the match tickets priced at $6 (Rs 497) with the most expensive ticket for premium seats during the India vs Pakistan encounter was $400 (Rs 33148) without taxes.

However, on platforms like StubHub and SeatGeek, the prices are substantially higher.

The tickets, which were priced at $400, is available for $40,000 (around Rs 33 Lakh) on resale sites and if we add platform fees, the amount goes up to $50,000 (around Rs 41 Lakh).

According to a report by USA Today, the average ticket for Super Bowl 58 went for $9000 on the secondary market while courtside seats for NBA finals were as high as $24,000.

On the platform SeatGeek, the prices have reached astronomical figures as the costliest ticket for the India vs Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup 2024 was listed for $175,000 (around Rs 1.4 crore). Add platform charges and additional fees to that, the figures balloons up to around Rs 1.86 crore.

As previously reported by IndiaToday.in, the couple was assaulted by the men who later gangraped the woman.

Following the events, the police have arrested three accused and launched a manhunt to catch the remaining, reported PTI. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to probe the incident.

Arvind Kejriwal Says Ready To Face Summons Virtually, Probe Agency Responds

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today responded to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) eighth summons related to the money laundering probe concerning irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case. Despite deeming the summons as "illegal", Mr Kejriwal expressed his willingness to answer the probe agency's questions, proposing a date after March 12.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said Mr Kejriwal will attend the hearing through video conferencing. However, the probe agency is adamant about physically questioning the Delhi Chief Minister. The ED has said that there is no provision for interrogation through video conferencing.

This move comes after the ED issued its eighth summons on February 27, setting March 4 as the scheduled date for Mr Kejriwal to appear at the agency's headquarters.

The ongoing probe revolves around alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy (2021-22). The ED seeks Mr Kejriwal's statement on matters such as policy formulation and allegations of bribery.

Mr Kejriwal has previously skipped seven summonses issued by the ED, labeling them as "illegal and politically motivated." The AAP, in a statement, urged the ED to refrain from sending further summonses and await the court's decision.

The excise policy, introduced to bring an overhaul to the national capital's liquor business, promised a more modern shopping experience with discounts and offers. However, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena's order to investigate alleged irregularities prompted the policy's cancellation. The AAP accuses Mr Saxena's predecessor, Anil Baijal, of making last-minute changes that adversely affected the policy's revenue expectations.

Two prominent AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, are already under judicial custody in connection with the case. Mr Sisodia, the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 last year, while Mr Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, was arrested by the ED on October 5.

Haley's symbolic victory in the nation's capital comes just ahead a decisive day in the long US nominating process -- Super Tuesday, in which 15 states and one territory vote.

Washington is a solidly Democratic town with a small number of registered Republicans. CNN, which was among outlets reporting that Haley won on Sunday, put it at just 22,000.

Haley took 63 percent of the votes in a primary held in just one place -- a downtown hotel, according to Politico, which quoted Washington party officials.

In the 2020 election against Trump, then candidate Joe Biden won 92 percent of the votes in Washington.

The city has never produced a majority vote for a Republican presidential candidate.

The Haley campaign put out a statement saying "It's not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos."

Trump's campaign in turn released what it called a "statement on Nikki Haley Being Crowned Queen of The Swamp."

"Tonight's results in Washington DC reaffirm the object of President Trump's campaign -- he will drain the swamp and put America first," the statement said.

The Super Tuesday milestone is expected to leave Trump a hair's breadth from securing the Republican Party's presidential nomination. He has already swept all the early state primaries.

Super Tuesday is seen as the last real chance for Haley to upend the former president's march towards becoming the party's flagbearer once again, against Biden.

Earlier, Kohli had pulled out of the first T20I against Afghanistan too due to 'personal reasons'. It has, however, not been revealed what the personal situation is that Virat is dealing with.

The BCCI released stated that Virat has already spoken to skipper Rohit Sharma on the matter and he has the captain's support on the matter. In Kohli's absence, there will be huge responsibility on the shoulders of youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, etc. to step up and deliver.

The BCCI statement read: "Mr. Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming IDFC First Bank Test series against England, citing personal reasons.

"Virat has spoken to Captain Rohit Sharma, the team management and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention."

"The BCCI respects his decision and the Board and team management has extended its support to the star batter and is confident in the abilities of the remaining squad members to step up and deliver commendable performances in the Test series."

"The BCCI requests the media and fans to respect Virat Kohli's privacy during this time and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons. The focus should remain on supporting the Indian cricket team as they embark on the upcoming challenges in the Test series."

India are scheduled to play a five-match Test series against England, the first of which will be held in Hyderabad on January 25. The second match of the series will be played on February 2 in Vizag. Virat Kohli is expected to return for the remaining three matches of the series.

A huge group of actors and celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, and couples Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif attended the Ram temple's consecration in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya today. Filmmakers Rohit Shetty and Rajkumar Hirani; actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Madhuri Dixit Nene along with her husband Sriram Nene, and producer Mahaveer Jain also came to the temple town.

Many were seen clicking selfies at their seats when Prime Minister Narendra Modi started addressing people. Some of those seen taking selfies were Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Rohit Shetty, Katrina Kaif, Ayushmann Khurrana, Madhuri Dixit, Rajkumar Hirani, Akash Ambani, and Vicky Kaushal.

Actors Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, who are shooting for their upcoming film "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan", gave their wishes in a video message on social media.

"Both of us wish you Jai Shri Ram! It's a big day for all devotees of Lord Ram across the world. After a wait of hundreds of years Ram Lalla is returning to his abode in a grand temple in Ayodhya. We wish you and your family on this pious day," Akshay Kumar said in the clip.

Tiger Shroff said watching this day become a reality is a big deal. "We are waiting for the time when we will light up lamps to welcome Shri Ram," said the actor, whose father Jackie Shroff attended the 'pran prathishtha' today.

Anupam Kher, who reached Ayodhya on Sunday, said regardless of religion, the country has come together today. Kangana Ranaut, who reached Ayodhya on Saturday, said it appears as if she has been transported into a "pauranik kaal". She also posted a series of her pictures from the temple site.

"This is a divine experience. If we talk about development, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has completely changed Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya will go on to become even more famous than Rome's Vatican City, not just in terms of development, but spirituality as well. Our icon, Ram Lalla, will guide the whole world," Ms Ranaut said.

Addressing the large gathering after the 'pran pratistha' rituals at the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, "Our Ram has finally arrived." "I have come before you are witnessing the divine consciousness in the temple's sanctum sanctorum. There's so much to say but, but there's a lump in my throat. After unprecedented patience, innumerable sacrifices and penance, our Lord Ram has arrived. I congratulate the country on this occasion," the Prime Minister said.

Ram Lalla, he said, will "no longer live in a tent". Saying that this moment of consecration is a blessing from Lord Ram, he said January 22 is "not a date on a calendar, but the dawn of a new era".

Equating the consecration ceremony with breaking free of a mindset of slavery, he said it is a blessing that we are alive to witness this historic event. "Even after thousands of years, people will remember this date, moment. It is Ram's supreme blessings that we are witnessing it," he said. He also sought forgiveness from the deity and said there must have been some lapse because of which it took so long to reach this point.

Saying that "Ram's existence was questioned", the Prime Minister said, "In India's Constitution, in its first page, there's Lord Ram. I thank the Supreme Court for maintaining the dignity of law."

Some people, he said, had warned that the construction of the Ram Temple will light a fire. "Such people could not understand the purity of India's social consciousness. The construction of this temple of Ram Lalla is also a symbol of the Indian society's peace, patience and mutual harmony. We can see this has not given birth to a fire, but an energy," he said.

"Ram is not a fire, he is an energy. Ram is not a dispute, he is a solution. Ram is not just ours, he is everyone's," the Prime Minister said, adding, "Today, we did not just see the pran pratishtha of Ram Lalla's idol, but also the pran pratishtha of the unbreakable unity of India."

Laying down a vision for the country's development in the future, the Prime Minister said, "Ram's temple has been built. Now what? Every citizen's consciousness should extend from dev (god) to desh (country) and from Ram to rashtra (nation)."

Tamil Nadu, BJP Fight Over Ayodhya Live Stream Goes From Streets To Supreme Court

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has fired a salvo of posts on X alleging "repression" in Tamil Nadu to prevent people from watching the live stream of the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya today. Her comments came shortly after the Supreme Court this morning recorded the statement of the Tamil Nadu government, which claimed no restriction has been imposed on temples to live stream the Ram temple consecration event. The Supreme Court ordered the state government to consider applications, if any, for telecasting the pran prathistha ceremony live.

The Tamil Nadu Police had removed some LED screens set up by BJP leaders at public places over allegations that they did not take permission to do so. The state unit of the BJP then approached the Supreme Court, asking for permission to allow live stream from Ayodhya in LED screens installed across the southern state.

Continuing her posts from yesterday, when she pointed out Tamil Nadu has over 200 temples dedicated to Lord Ram and the police have been stopping even private temples from live streaming the pran prathistha ceremony, Ms Sitharaman today said, "The repression saga in Tamil Nadu continues: a small village (not more than 200 houses) where people wanted to celebrate Ayodhya Ram mandir and watch Prime Minister Narendra Modi participate have been told that unless the district collector (DC) gives permission, they shall not install the hired LED screen."

"The DC is sitting on the matter. LED supplier is threatened. Village: Karunilam district, Chengalpattu," the Finance Minister said.

The ruling DMK government under Chief Minister MK Stalin has refuted her allegations, saying the BJP has been trying to "divert attention" from the DMK youth conference being held in Tamil Nadu's Salem today.

Ms Sitharaman also posted a video of some people removing a large LED screen from a temple.

"Inside the famous Kamakshi Kovil, which is privately held, where bhajans have started from 8 am, LED screens are being removed by plainclothed policemen… This is a serious infringement on our right to worship. The DMK government in Tamil Nadu completely failed to protect citizens' rights. Anti-Hindu DMK now bares its hatred for PM Modi with the police and suppresses peoples aspirations," Ms Sitharaman said in the post on X.

The Finance Minister said in Kanchipuram district alone, 466 LED screens were arranged for the live telecast. "In more than 400 of those places, the police have either confiscated the screens or deployed force to prevent the live telecast. LED suppliers are fleeing with fear. The anti-Hindu DMK is hitting at small businesses," she alleged.

The DMK government has also denied a newspaper report, which claims oral instructions from the state government barred special pujas and serving free food in the name of Lord Ram in temples. Calling it a "motivated report to bring disrepute to the state government," the DMK government has said it would take legal action against the newspaper.

The Supreme Court today said no one is bound to abide with oral orders "banning" live telecast of the Ram temple consecration ceremony in temples across Tamil Nadu.

The state government in a statement said that under Mr Stalin, 1,270 temples have been consecrated, free food is served daily in 764 temples, and restored 197 ancient temples, many of which are a thousand years old, at a cost of nearly ₹ 300 crore.

"Hindu believers in Tamil Nadu know this, even the Opposition can't deny," the state government said in the statement.
