Cerdocyon thous
There are 23 species of fox, only half of which are “true foxes.” This means the other species are generally more closely related to dogs and wolves than to other fox species. The crab-eating fox of northern and eastern South America is one of these “false foxes.”
As its name suggests, the crab-eating fox eats crabs. These crabs are only available during the wet season, however, so during the dry season they rely more on small mammals, birds, eggs, carrion, and fruit, which they hunt for in savanna and woodland habitats. The foxes are less territorial during the wet season since food is more abundant. In their territories, the foxes have large burrows that they spend most of the day in before coming out at night to hunt. Although they generally live in pairs, they hunt alone.
Like the bush dog and other tropical canids, the crab-eating fox is able to have multiple litters of 2-6 kits every year. Canids like the grey wolf or raccoon dog are unable to do this since the pups or kits would likely be born in cold weather and would be unable to survive.
I rate the crab-eating fox 9/10. Really pretty and unusual-looking animal. Missing a point bc it’s called a fox but isn’t one. Very confusing. Please stop.
