Island Hopper-Chapter 28: Just Add Water

Certain things are instant. Not usually sons.

Perkaj looked so small sitting next to Jamie on the Jolok boat. The breeze whipped his fine black hair around his ears. Before he was discharged that morning, Dr. Langenbelik had coached us on our goals. Perkaj, as young as he was, needed to be able to maintain his correct blood sugar level for at the least a full week by himself before we were to allow him to move back in with his family.

After that we were to spot check--stop in and have him test his blood sugars at a variety of times of day to make sure he was being consistent. The goal was for him to re-enter his family and be independent of us, but not at the cost of his health. We could also work with the family to help support him, hopefully getting their cooperation to speed the process of moving back home again.

Jamie and I had bundled up Perkaj with the few possessions he had brought along and the medical paraphernalia that he had gained during his hospitalization, along with a coterie of stuffed animals and toy cars, gifts from the nurses who had felt such pity for the unparented wee waif. We had boarded the Jolok boat just in time for departure.

Perkaj’s dark eyes sparkled with delight as he glanced back at me. He crouched to come close to me and exclaimed above the roar of the engine and surf. “We go to your house now!”

“We will also see your mama and baba,” I said.

At that, he looked giddy. “I miss them,” he admitted, then with a smile at me went back to sit with Jamie.

He was equally excited during the bumpy ride in the back of the pickup truck from Arno Arno to Ine. I realized from his enthusiastic reactions to everything we saw that he must have had no memory of his own truck ride to the air strip and plane ride to Majuro, and that this could be his first adventure outside the confines of the island.

“Let’s stop at Perkaj’s house first,” Jamie suggested as we neared Ine. I watched Perkaj’s face as we got closer, sharing in his joy as we pulled up to park on his property. Our call to the Iroij had the desired effect, as the boy’s family members came spilling out of the house to greet him. His mama was in tears, holding him by the cheeks and gazing into his face, clucking at how much weight he had lost but obviously pleased to see him looking healthy again. His father smiled gravely as he shook Jamie’s hand.

They invited us to come in, and we entered their house, nodding at the relatives we found already inside. Perkaj’s mother and father ushered us to a pandanus mat and tried to urge food on us. Jamie gestured to his stomach and explained that he was full and couldn’t eat anything. I had a feeling that his stomach was still churning from the boat ride despite motion sickness pills.

I could pick out the occasional word as Jamie explained everything to them. At his invitation, Perkaj joined us on the mat and pulled out his zippered kit with lancets, tester, and insulin. At Jamie’s nod, he took a testing strip and inserted it into the tester. The room was silent as he twisted the plastic tip off the lancet, but there was a chorus of gasps as he poked his own finger and then touched the droplet of blood to the testing strip. Quiet murmurs followed, but when the tester beeped with the results, Perkaj held it up not to show his parents, but Jamie so he could see the LCD readout.

“Emmon, good,” said Jamie. “120. Show Baba and Mama.”

Perkaj scrambled over to them, squatted between them, and pointed and explained as he looked at the monitor.

I noticed that Maria was hanging back at the side of the room, so as the attention of the crowd was on Perkaj, I motioned to her to come outside. She hung her head shamefacedly, not meeting my eyes.

“I am not good aunt,” she muttered.

“Yes you are,” I said. “You came with Perkaj to Majuro. It is very hard to take care of someone with diabetes. You remember I am a nurse, so I can help Perkaj until he can manage it himself, but you can be a helper to him when he comes back home.”

Her eyelashes fluttered as she glanced quickly up at me. “Jolok bod,” she said. “Is bad he live in your house? You and Meester Shamie are just married. Is not time for nin-nins yet.”

“Ejjelok bod. It’s okay,” I said, trying as hard as I could to mean it.

Before long, Jamie had made our excuses, Maria helped me grab a few more pairs of clothing for Perkaj, and we had our driver take us the rest of the way to the clinic. Coming around the side of the truck, I felt a hand on my arm. It was Jamie, concern on his face. “Are you all right, hen?” he asked. Perkaj was pulling his backpack out of the truck, his focus elsewhere.

“Honestly? A little terrified,” I answered, meeting Jamie’s eyes. “Wondering how we’re going to manage all of this along with the rest of our lives.”

“Just do the next right thing,” Jamie said. “That’s what my da used to say when Jenny, Willie or I were overwhelmed by a task.”

I took a deep breath, grabbed my suitcase and swung it out of the bed of the truck.

“Well,” I said, with a hesitant smile at Jamie, “let’s get inside and make a spot for Perkaj.”

After dropping my luggage by the kitchen table, I went around the apartment opening up the louvered windows and curtains which had been closed for more than a week. Without a breeze to move the air it made little difference. It was still stuffy and hot.

Perkaj wandered around the apartment, stopping in front of the pantry with its rows of cans and tubs of dry goods. “Ebol mona,” he marveled, opening his arms to show how much food we seemed to have.

“Eh bowl?” I asked Jamie. “I know mona is food.”

“It means full… a lot.”

After pulling our bed closer to the west wall of the apartment, Jamie moved the couch to create a barrier between the table and the back wall to give Perkaj a spot of his own.

Glancing at me occasionally, Jamie set up the space. He pulled a quilt from our storage tub, folded it several times and laid it on the floor, topping it with the pandanus mat Perkaj’s mom had carefully rolled up for her son. I pulled one of the extra pillows from our bed and put on a fresh pillowcase, handing a sheet to Jamie to put on top of the mat.

Looking through the back window, I caught sight of my raised beds. Having seen the dry yellow grass along the sides of the road , the drooping palm fronds and wilting jungle plants on the way from Arno Arno, I’d had a sinking feeling. I still saw green peeking up above the wooden walls of the beds, so I invited Perkaj out to see my plants.

Though most of the plants looked a little limp, as I dug down into the soil surrounding them I discovered that just an inch under the surface of the ground there was moisture. It was only a minute later that Anni wandered over.

“Meester Shamie asked me to water the plants,” she said, smiling. Perkaj stood up on tiptoes to peek into the box, then grabbed the bucket to go to the well. He lugged it back having to use both hands to carry it, water sloshing out on his feet. But he was fascinated and helpful as we dipped cups of water and gently poured them at the base of each plant.

By the time we went back inside, Jamie had stretched wire from one rafter to the other and was hanging up a sheet to separate Perkaj's little room from ours.

“Let’s do coconut rice and fish,” Jamie suggested, nodding towards our little visitor. He had reached into the dresser, grabbed swim trunks, and was about to drop his pants when he thought again.

“Do you want to see how yer bed feels?” He asked Perkaj, rattling off the translation in Majol afterwards. Once Perkaj had rounded the curtain, Jamie whipped off his clothing and pulled on the trunks, his back to the room. After a pleasant eyeful, and having never seen the man sheepish about being naked, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Perkaj was still happily sitting on his bed, setting his zoo of stuffed animals around the perimeter when Jamie joined me in the kitchen.

“Obviously, I need to rethink the space,” he whispered. “No’ enough privacy yet,”

“You think he’s never seen a naked man before?” I asked in an undertone.

“Aye, I’m sure the lad has, but he doesna need to be subjected to the vision of a large, naked white Scotsman.”

“That would be a traumatizing nightmare,” I joked. Jamie smirked, kissed me, and headed out the door with his fish spear.

“Itok, Perkaj,” I called out. “Can you help me find a coconut for the rice?”

Prepping dinner took a good hour, followed by testing his blood sugar, giving Perkaj short-acting insulin, measuring portions, eating, and cleaning up after the meal. By 7:45 I couldn’t tell who was more exhausted--us or Perkaj. Jamie meticulously wrote down everything in the blood sugar/insulin log, and then we met each other’s eyes, an identical question on our faces. “What now?”

We were used to freedom in the evenings, our time being our own to read or write letters, to flirt and joke and laugh, to kiss and cuddle, to freely shed our clothing and make as much noise as we wanted. But now there was an unfamiliar guest in our sacred space.

For the first time, I thought I saw it register on Jamie’s face-the sense of anxiety and discomfort I was feeling. But then he frowned determinedly and turned to Perkaj.

“Ej awa in kiki,” he said. “It’s time to sleep. What do mama and baba do to help you rest?”

“Erro bwebwenato,” Perkaj replied. His voice held a tinge of sadness.

“They tell you a story?” Jamie repeated, translating. “Well, come & lie down in your bed, and I’ll tell ye a story. I have one that’s called Jock & his Mother.”

We turned on a lamp by our bed and turned off the main lights. While the boys were on one side of the sheet I put on my pajamas, choosing a longer pair of shorts in case Perkaj saw me in the morning.

The story was a little like one I’d heard before, where a simple-minded boy keeps following his mother’s advice a bit too late. Jock brings home a needle in a bundle of hay, and his mother tells him he should have put it in his hat. The next day he brings home a plough, and following his mother’s advice, puts it on his hat. Of course, it’s so heavy it falls into the river.

“She said to him, ‘You silly boy! Ye should have tied a rope to it and pulled it behind you!’” Jamie said, giving the mother the voice of an old crone. Perkaj giggled.

“The next day,” Jamie said, “The boy earned a leg o’ mutton... well, they dinna have those on Arno, so maybe it was a… roasted chicken. What do you think he did with it?”

“Tie it with rope?” Perkaj offered.

“And pulled it all the way home!” Jamie answered. The answering peal of laughter made me smile. I sat on the bed, arms hugged around my knees. All this time I hadn’t realized this talent of Jamie’s. My only bedtime story from him had been the boring recitation of Scottish history.

Poor Jock tried to carry a horse on his shoulder and then rode a cow, which of course helped a sad princess to laugh and so they got married. Jamie slowed his sentences and lowered his voice as the story continued, and just before I heard the floor creak with the movement of Jamie pushing himself up off the floor, I heard a little voice murmur something in Marshallese.

Jamie crept around the curtain, smiling when he saw me. He joined me on the bed and was reaching for a book when I whispered, “What did he say? I didn’t hear him well enough.”

I could have sworn there was a little mist in Jamie’s eyes as he answered. “He said ‘Ainikiom ekakiiki ao.’” He paused, the effort of translating wrinkling his forehead. “It means,” he blushed and met my eyes. “The sound of your voice lulls my soul to sleep.”

I felt a lump in my throat, the sting of tears in my own eyes as I leaned my head on Jamie’s shoulder. He pressed a kiss onto my forehead and wrapped an arm around me.

“Tired?” he asked.

“Exhausted,” I answered.

“I don’t even think I can read tonight,” he said, reaching over me to turn off the lamp.

“I won’t argue with that,” I responded, getting up to turn the covers down and pull up the single top sheet. It was still hot and windless.

Jamie cuddled me for a moment when he got under the covers, but then pulled away.

“It’s so hot,” he groaned. “I’m missing air conditioning already.”

It was pitch black inside and out when I startled awake.

“I want to go home,” a small voice quavered. “Ikonaan mama im baba. In my house, my brother sleeps next to me,” Perkaj cried. “I am alone here.”

“Jab jan”, Jamie said reassuringly. “Don’t cry. Here. You can sleep next to me.”

He flipped on the lamp, pushed the sheet out of the way, pulled the mat over until it was touching the side of our bed and tucked Perkaj in again. Jamie then got into bed, kindly turning toward the little boy and scooting closer to the edge that faced him.

For the next few minutes, I could hear Marshallese as Jamie murmured reassurances to Perkaj. The low rumble of foreign speech patterns soothed me as well, and soon I fell back asleep.

In the predawn hours, I was awakened by large, warm hands that gently stroked my back. They found their way to the tight muscles of my neck and shoulders, then ran fingers through my hair to massage my scalp.

I shivered at a kiss on my shoulder blade, at which Jamie scooted closer to me and put his arm over me.

“Cold, hen?” he asked.

“Actually, no,” I said, smiling to myself.

“Me neither,” he whispered, a hand meandering down my side, lazily tracing the waistband of my shorts before slipping fingers under the elastic.

“Whatcha doing?” I whispered playfully, rolling toward him and being rewarded by an enthusiastic caress of my breast and a thorough kiss.

“Dying,” was Jamie’s response. “A busy week at your parents’ house, then sleeping apart from ye at the hospital, and now we have an instant son? God, I'm starving for ye.”

No words were needed to tell him I felt the same. I’d been trying not to be selfish and resentful, but it was challenging to not feel deprived and disconnected.

I helped him finish what he had started, wriggling out of my shorts and kicking them onto the floor, then climbing atop Jamie, who made quick work of pulling off my tank top over my head, throwing it to the side to join its companion on the floor.

“Ifrinn,” he gasped as I used a hand to guide him in, lowering myself onto him.

Perkaj won’t wake up, I assured myself, confident the darkness would hide us. He was turned away from us anyway, his breath coming out in a low, even snore. I leaned toward him just to make sure he wasn’t looking in our direction.

Jamie must have noticed my movement because he hissed under his breath, “It won’t be the first time he’s heard these noi… Oh, God… oh, Christ...”

I put my hand over his mouth, increasing my pace. I was close, he was close, and then, a plaintive voice interrupted the process. “Meester Shamie?”

I froze. Jamie desperately tried to hold my hips to keep me in place, but I was instantly out of the mood, melting down next to Jamie like an ice cube on a hot car.

“No no no no no no no…” Jamie pleaded. I pulled the sheet up, panting. “Bollocks,” he swore, then modulated his voice after a deep sigh. “Ijin,” he said calmly, rolling away from me toward Perkaj. “I’m right here.”

Summary: Rachel Eliot had a plan. She would continue to date Grizz until he graduated, just a few weeks away. She would spend her senior year as the heartbroken ex, thereby eliminating any questions about her refusal to date. Then, she would get into Columbia, live in New York with Grizz and study visual arts and creative writing, and then she would finally be able to come out. She would continue to talk to Sam, continuing to pine over Becca from afar, but West Ham would be left in the past. That was her plan.

But then the smell came, and left, and came back again, and then the buses came. The busses took them away, and brought them back, and everyone was gone. West Ham was empty, shut off from whatever outside world might have still existed, just a couple hundred teenagers with no way of calling for help. And suddenly, Rachel needed a new plan. Adapt. Survive. Keep everyone alive. Protect them, no matter the cost.

Rachel Eliot had a plan. The busses came and left and too that plan with them. But Rachel was an artist, a writer, a survivor. And most importantly, she would do whatever it took to protect the people she loved.

Summary: Everyone is slightly surprised that Jeff is dating you and their reactions start to grate on you, leaving you feeling like you’re not good enough for Jeff.

A/N: Requests are open! NO DAVID REQUESTS, I HAVE TOO MANY (THEY WILL JUST BE DELETED). Also, of course I don’t think they would actually be like this. My masterlist, queue and taglist are all in my bio.

You and Jeff had met at a bar, you were a bartender, and when you had asked him what you could get him, he’d asked for your phone number. You were a bit unsure whether or not he was being serious because he looked like a Greek god and you were just, well you, but he had been persistent and you’d eventually given him your number.

You had never heard of the vlog squad before meeting Jeff, so you had no idea what a big deal your boyfriend was and how many fans he had. After watching Jeff and his friends' video’s, you realised that your relationship may be a problem to Jeff’s fans who lusted over him, not just because you were dating Jeff but because you weren’t exactly a model.

What you hadn’t expected was that Jeff’s friends were surprised that Jeff was dating you. You figured that they’d be more accepting of your relationship.

“This is my girlfriend, Y/N.” Jeff introduced you with a wide smile.

“Hi.” You gave a nervous smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Jeff’s told me a lot about you!”

Everyone was silent for a few moments before Zane smiled kindly at you. “It’s so nice to meet you baby! Jeff’s told us a lot about you too!”

You got along with them all well, so it surprised you when you got to David’s once before Jeff and heard them all speaking about you.

“She’s just not the type of girl I could see him with you know.” You heard Todd say. You were about to ask who they were talking about when something stopped you, perhaps they were talking about you.

David laughed. “I know, he’s literally the hottest guy we know, and he’s with a girl like her. I don’t get it. She must be really good in bed.” You felt yourself flush darkly, they must’ve been talking about you.

You heard a few giggles, but couldn’t tell who it was, there was definitely some female giggling mixed amongst those who you already knew were there. "You shouldn't be talking about Y/N like this. Jeff likes her.” Heath pointed out after the giggles had died down. Your heart dropped, there was the confirmation that they were talking about you.

“I like her, she’s funny, and she’s really smart.” Zane defended you, and a tiny bit of warmth flooded you, at least one of Jeff’s friends liked you. But you’d heard enough, you turned around and ran back out, letting the door slam behind you.

You went back to your apartment, forgetting to tell Jeff that you had to cancel and got back into bed, crying. If Jeff’s friends didn’t even think that you were good enough for him, then their fans definitely wouldn’t and you couldn’t hide your relationship forever.

It was where Jeff found you hours later, still curled up in your duvet, with dried tear tracks down your face, the occasional hiccup still escaping you.

“Baby, what’s wrong?” Jeff climbed onto the bed behind you, hand tangling into your hair. “I thought maybe you had gotten held up, but then you still didn’t show and then you weren’t answering your phone.”

Fresh sobs escaped you. “I did go.”

Jeff frowned, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. “What do you mean? You went to David’s? Why did you leave? And why are you so upset?”

“I went there this morning, and you weren’t there yet.” You cried. “I could hear them talking about someone, and then I realised they were talking about me.” You bit down on your lip, they were Jeff’s friends, maybe he wouldn’t believe you. “They don’t like me, Jeff! They don’t think I’m good enough for you!”

Jeff froze behind you, he had sensed that his friends were a little bit off with you but presumed that they were just warming up to you. “What did they say?”

You sniffled and rubbed your face against your duvet. “That I’m not your type, you’re really hot, but you’re with me. David couldn’t understand and thought I must be good in bed for you to be with me.” You sobbed. “Heath and Zane kind of stood up for me, but they didn’t disagree that I don’t suit you physically.”

The bed shifted again, and Jeff stood up, pulling his phone from his jeans. “I can’t believe they’d say that about you! They know how much I like you!” Jeff began to type angrily on his phone, his short nails tapping on the glass.

“Jeff, don’t.” You sat up, the duvet falling around your waist. “I mean, they’re right, you’re far too good for me.”

Jeff’s gaze snapped back to you from his phone. “That’s not true, Y/N! If anything it’s the other way around! You’re a fuckin’ angel, and I’m an ex-convict!”

"Jeff, that's not true!" You frowned deeply.

He shook his head erratically. "I need to go and talk to them all, I'll be back soon."

Your heart dropped to your stomach, the last thing that you wanted to do was cause problems between Jeff and his friends. "No, don't, please. I don't want to make it worse."

"Y/N, I have to. They were talking about my girlfriend behind both of our backs and saying shitty things. That doesn't look good on me either, Y/N." Jeff argued, pulling his trainers back on. "I won't be long, and I'm not going to have an argument with them."

You frowned. "Please don't get upset with them, they didn't realise I was listening."

Jeff scoffed. "That's why I need to go and talk to them."

"Okay." You sighed. "Just don't get angry."

"I'll try not to, but they disrespected both of us." Jeff's Staten Island accent became much thicker when he was upset or angry, and you hid a small smile.

"Okay, don't be long or I'll worry about you." You relented, watching as your boyfriend walked away.

Jeff was furious, he was happier than he had been in a long time with you and you had been ready to break up with him over what they had said.

He burst into David's house and went straight into the living room, where he knew everyone would be. "What the fuck, guys?!"

Everyone turned to look at Jeff in shock. "What's wrong, Jeff?" David set his camera down.

"Would you like to tell me why my girlfriend has been crying in bed all day because of you motherfuckas?!" Jeff stood with his arms crossed over his chest, watching as his friends shared nervous glances.

"I told you all not to talk about her like that!" Heath groaned, throwing his head back.

"Well, we didn't realise that she was earwigging!" David complained.

"So, now it's Y/N's fault for turning up somewhere she was invited and hearing you all slag her off?" Jeff was getting angrier by the minute, he turned to Todd. "Would you like it if I told everyone that Olivia was no good for you, Todd? Or Kristen for you Scott? What about if I'd said that I couldn't understand why a girl like Liza would ever be interested in you David?"

Jeff laughed bitterly. "And you two." He turned to Carly and Erin. "I've spoken to you about how happy Y/N makes me, and you let them tear Y/N apart! What is wrong with you all?! Why can't you let me be happy?!"

"We're sorry." David tried weakly. "We didn't know that she was listening, not that it's an excuse. We just didn't get why you weren't dating one of the models that are obsessed with you."

"Speak for yourself!" Zane interrupted. "You guys know I love Y/N."

"Y/N is so damn beautiful, David, I can't believe you'd be that shallow," Jeff growled. "She's smart and funny, and she takes care of me. Which is more than I can say about you lot, taking the piss out of my criminal history."

"I'm sorry, man." Todd sounded sheepish. "I didn't realise you liked her that much."

"I love her." Jeff corrected, causing a few of his friends' eyes' to widen. "But that doesn't even matter, you knew she was my girlfriend and you still chose to make those comments. That's disrespectful to both her and me. I can't just overlook that."

"We're sorry, Jeff," Carly spoke quietly. "I don't know what else we can do."

Jeff shook his head. "It's not me that you should be saying sorry to. You made my girlfriend cry thinking that she wasn't good enough for me. All because she weighs a few extra pounds!"

"We'll apologise to her too," Scott added.

"I think it's best that we don't see you guys for a while," Jeff said finally. "You guys just aren't who I thought you were."

Jeff's friends shared a look again. "Is that really necessary?" David asked.

"Was it really necessary to make my girlfriend feel like shit?" With that Jeff left his friends, hurrying back to you.

When Jeff got back to your apartment, you had gotten out of bed and were sat on the couch waiting for him to get back and nursing a mug of hot chocolate.

"We're not going around there for a while," Jeff told you, plonking himself down next to you and wrapping his arm around your waist, careful not to knock your mug out of your hands.

"What did you do?" You asked, slightly worried.

"Nothin'!" Jeff insisted. "They're assholes."

"They're your friends!" You countered.

"But you're my girlfriend, and they can't understand that." Jeff shook his head. "You're fuckin' perfect you know."

You scoffed. "Jeff I'm not perfect."

Jeff grinned. "You perfect to me."

A/N: okay, look -- i know that MTV didn’t start broadcasting until ‘81, but we’re going to pretend that a familiar channel existed in the 70′s. it’s mainly because of this iconic interview. just go with it. you’ll enjoy it, i hope!

warnings: swearing (a healthy dollop), historical pop culture references i’m not even sure are entirely right, and lots of different ways of saying how beautiful roger is.

You were pretty sure you were going to throw up.

“What the hell do you mean ‘you can’t do the interview’?” you hissed to the colleague opposite of you. Angela, who was looking greener than a toad stared at you, her most apologetic look she could muster spread over her face. Although, it wasn’t much. Her energy was all but gone as she pathetically sat at her desk. While the bullpin around the two of you continued with it’s routine commotion, you just stared at Angela as though she had practically ended the world.

She struggled to get anything out without doubling over, and you were surprised your boss hand’t come out yet to scream at her to go home. Nevertheless, she sat herself up and took a deep breath. “I’ve got to get home and get over this. I can’t puke all over Roger Taylor’s shoes, (Y/N).”

“Well, that’s obvious.” You shot back. Your anxiety was getting the best of you; your brain already knew what Angela was going to ask of you. It was busy trying to think of ways out of her favor. But, you still made the mistake to ask, “So, what are you going to do?”

“I’m going to have someone else go on.” Angie got out. She followed with a big breath, and a hand to her chest as though it would hold back something from coming up her throat. “But Benny can’t do it — neither can David. They’re swamped with the Glen Campbell thing. You just finished Carly Simon’s—”

As though you knew where this was going, you put on your fighting gloves. “I had weeks to prep for Carly! You’re giving me—” In a mad rush, you looked down to the watch — the one your last boyfriend gave you as a “useful” gift since you were always late. “— You’re giving me four hours, Angie.”

She took a deep breath, and you weren’t quite sure if that was from the nausea she was experiencing, or the hard time you were giving her. Either way, it sent a wave of guilt washing over you that somehow dispelled the anxiety beginning to overtake you from the prospect of actually doing this interview. You’d barely listened to the new album, let alone checked up on them in order to feel prepared.

A Day at the Races had been out for less than a month, and with the holidays coming up soon — listening to it had been on the bottom of your priority list. They were good — and it wasn’t an album that you were going to forget about. But damn —the Carly Simon piece had taken every last inch of your effort for the last two months. (And you were really just looking forward to gliding through the rest of the week until holiday break). But this? Roger Taylor was going to have your ass, and not in the way you would particularly want it. Maybe that was why you hated yourself as the simple “I’ll do it” crawled up your throat and off your lips.

Angie barely heard the statement, just from the softness that it came out as. Her shoulders slumped in a sense of relief — or maybe fatigue — signaling that you better go and start working on this fucking interview. Even with the folder that Angie handed over before you left, there was still so much to do.

You managed to lock yourself into your office with the album blasting.

As coworkers walked by, they found your physically anxious body hunched over your desk as you spent close to three hours surveying Angie’s notes and questions, while the album blasted from your speakers in the other corner. A room that was normally your safe haven had become a sort of hell in such a short amount of time.

It had been months since you last crammed for an interview so much; last time — it was Mike Love. He had been gracious enough to deal with you as you steered your questions towards him specifically, although you suspected it wasn’t difficult for the man to speak of himself. Even easier, it seemed, was it to keep the conversation off of Brian Wilson. And while your boss wasn’t the happiest with the results — it was the best anyone could do. (Nobody had heard from the Wilson brother in question in so long that there was a running bet in the office as to if the news would come that he had passed.)

But the problem with Roger Taylor was that he wasn’t the front man to begin with. Sure, he had a song on the album in question — and he was the pretty boy — but the sheer magnetism that Freddie Mercury held with a death grip wasn’t there when you peered at a photo of Roger. And that was alright, but it left you at an odd position. Angie’s papers noted the lack of previous interviews with just Roger, and instead of that relaxing you with the prospect of originality — you began to panic more with the knowledge that there wasn’t much info to go off of. Nevertheless, you pressed on.

As though you had another option.

Hair and makeup breezed by, and while curlers set your hair — you paced in your office and continued to read over the new notes you had scribbled. There were a few good questions you could pride yourself on coming up with in such a short time. There were a few pissers. Fucking hell, you just hoped that this would go smoothly enough. Because if it didn’t…well, your Christmas might not go as swimmingly as you wanted it to. Your job would be fine, but the anxiety of upsetting your boss was too much to deal with. This job was nice — something that didn’t seem like a good idea to strike out at.

A gentle knock on the door revealed an office assistant giving you pained glance. As your eyebrows scrunched up in a questioning return, your eyes trailed over to the small entourage exiting the elevator and making their way inside. “Shit.”

As you scrambled to remove your curlers and check yourself over in the mirror, the creeping apprehension you thought you had settled started to bubble up once more. The logical side of your brain reminded you that this wouldn’t sack your career. An interview with a drummer, from a band that had about the same name recognition as Doris Day’s son, could get you a lot of views — if you aced it. But if you didn’t? It might not be a problem. The key word was “might”. And that let you take a breath as the last curler came out, and you smoothed yourself out one last time.

And then you were out. The mess inside your office could be dealt with later, once this whole thing was over with.

The blonde, pretty boy entering the office space looked so different from everyone else’s bland attire. If nothing else gave away the lack of resemblance to the rest of the place, his clothes would do the job. With a steel pink blazer draped over his shoulders, Roger Taylor seemed to fit more to be on a runway than the office space of a music cable syndicate. His sunglasses had yet to come off. Just barely hanging on at the edge of his nose, you were thinking to yourself that you could probably blow them off with just a little wind.

When he shook your hand, you noticed how strong of a grip he had. “Mr. Taylor,” you greeted. And god damn, wow — the the sight of the veins in his hands somehow caused your pulse to quicken in the slightest. You weren’t quite sure why, because it was such an odd remark to yourself.

“Roger.”

“Roger,” you corrected yourself with a small smile, before pulling your hand away and letting it roam one of your pockets for your lucky pen. You needed to focus on something else or you were pretty sure any air of professionalism you held would be thrown out the window when he could hear your heartbeat. “It’s good to have you here.”

He grinned at you, and you could see his eyes from just over the rims of the sunglasses. And oh, shit — they were absolutely gorgeous. Relax, [Y/N], you chided yourself. With one last deep breath to calm your nerves, you flashed him your best TV smile and held out a hand as to point to the studio doors. “Would you follow me? We can go over the brief while we do mic checks and everything for the night.”

He didn’t argue with you. About halfway down the hallway — he piped up. “‘m sorry, but wasn’t Angie supposed to do this?”

You cocked your head over your shoulder, giving him a quick response while people bustled around your new group. “She had to leave early today — emergency. I took over.” There, short and simple. He didn’t need to know about how you nearly pulled your hair out on several different occasions. The drama of telling yourself that this was too short of a deadline wasn’t something he needed to worry himself with.

Someone held the door open for you and Roger (with his little entourage that consisted of a couple of men that you probably thought were part of his management.) The set was bustling with other workers, and as you got to the table — you turned back to him. “Alright,” you launched off. “I’ll keep this simple: It’s live, but we’re actually going to send it over to another sound stage after ours for a little while. It should be easy.” He probably didn’t need this whole explanation, but what could it hurt? “I left my questions open, so you can plug the album well. If there’s anything personal you want to add — that sells well. Got it?”

Roger looked at you with a little grin and nodded. “Got it. Should be easy.” He copied.

As the hook to “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy” played overhead, you finally let out the breath you’d been holding since Angela gave you the job this afternoon. The whole thing was over; it had gone off without a hitch. Roger had done pretty well, and that calm candor had to have leant to the fact that he was here promoting the album, as opposed to the other members. You’d have to ask Angela about the others later.

Your papers, discarded on the table in front of you were practically pointless now. And Roger seized on that fact. He smiled as he took your papers from the spot they laid in front of you. You tried to reach for them and yank them back, but if your boss saw — that would look more unprofessional then whatever he was reading on the—

“Did Brian May write “Tie Your Mother Down” about anyone is specifics?” As soon as those words came out of his mouth, your cheeks tinted into the most crimson shade you’d ever known. Roger’s howl of a laugh echoed through the studio, and while everyone else kept to their own business — it sure didn’t feel that way. You were sure the spotlight guy up in the rafters had it pointed on you instead of whatever act was prepping on the small stage to your right. Somehow, he had managed to find the jokes — those stupid questions you wrote when you were on the wire and you thought you were going to explode.

He wasn’t supposed to find those.

And yet he continued listening them off, holding back laughter with very little success. “After your recent problems with EMI, do you really think you can dance a Millionare’s Waltz? Would you consider yourself a good old fashioned lover boy? Mr. Taylor, do you know you take my breath away?”

The last one, written in a final and brief moment before the interview started was meant to give you one last chuckle before the cameras started rolling. It wasn’t supposed to cause you the humiliation that it did now, and yet somehow — you honestly considered just melting into your chair and pretending that you never existed. “They’re jokes,” you tried. “Don’t you ever get the jitters before a big show?”

He finally met your eyes, with a gleam of his amusement obvious. You looked horribly upset but tried to hold yourself together like the professional you were. Those shitty jokes and questions might not give that air off, but you tried to convince yourself that you were. Despite this, you were pretty sure you didn’t look more pitiful and ashamed than your pup when you were a kid and they got into the trash bin.

“I don’t write jokes that are easily accessible to the ones they’re written about, no.” He countered, finally setting down the sheet and giving you the access to take them back. “But those would have been more fun to hear on air.”

You could only imagine. “And how would you have answered?”

He sensed the challenge growing in your eyes, but more so in your tone. And something in him stirred, like a sense of enjoyment he hadn’t felt at one of these things before. Sure, some of the other girls were willing to be obvious in their admiration (and what was he supposed to do as the rockstar he was?) Yet, no one was quite like you. And Roger liked the difference. So, he played along. “Well,” he started. “I would say that the bullshit Brian says about writing that song in college isn’t as true as he wishes it was. And we’re doing pretty good for ourself now. And uhm,” he paused — trying to remember the others. Why was he forgetting something that had made him laugh so hard a few seconds ago?

You breathed a sigh of relief that he was having trouble remembering the others. The first two were practically harmless — a little interesting when getting into the more personal aspects of the band. The others were practically spelling out in big letters how much your heart raced when you were around him now — throwing your experience as a “true journalist” out the window. And just as he seemed to remember, one of the tech assistants finally came to the rescue and asked for your mic.

You gave him the biggest smile, and found your reason to pause this whole thing. Getting unhooked took a second, but as soon as the newbie was off with your mic pack in hand, you thanked the heavens for the fact Roger Taylor had found himself someone else to chat to. In your small opportunity, you rifled through the papers you quickly collected and found the cursed sheet of paper. Without much grandeur or pomp, you crumpled the horrid thing and tossed it in the bin. With that out of the way, you found your interviewee once more.

He grinned when he saw you, and you smiled back. “Thanks for the opportunity, Roger.” Despite the amount of stress he and this interview had put you in, it was a great opportunity and a slight tilt from your regular. While Angela took most of rock albums and bands, you were most often times given more folksy albums to review and work on pieces for. Queen was quite the opposite.

“Ah, I should be the one thanking you.” He shot back, and you grinned. But God, your heart fluttered because his smile was something else. And then you had to remind yourself that this was just a single interview. “Thanks for the laughs. Any chance I could get that paper to show to the band?”

Oh, no. You chuckled despite the sinking feeling of anxiety taking you over. “I wish I could. I just tossed all my papers in the bin.” As you were about to say something else, you could hear your boss calling your name and quickly gave him the ‘i’ve got to go’ smile. Rushing off, Roger started to look around the set for any bins he might see.

A young man was emptying one out by where you had been previously, and Roger figured this was probably a good shot. As he rushed over, he found your scribbled handwriting over one of the sheets on the top of the bin. Still in the young guy’s arms, Roger only took a second to fish it out and head off. This would make a good story for the others.

What you need to know about the 10 black designers that Tracee Ellis Ross showcased at the American Music Awards

Tracee Ellis Ross returned to the stage of the American Music Awards as the host of the show for the second year in a row. This time, she was ready to make a statement with the 10 outfit changes she had lined up and the designers behind them.

In the beginning of the show, Ross announced that she would be seen wearing clothes by only black designers throughout the evening and crediting them for the looks on her Twitter account. The star of Black-ish put the spotlight on a group of talented creators, from high-fashion names like Virgil Abloh and Olivier Rousteing to the lesser-known designer Dèshon.

Pyer Moss

Ross’s red carpet look was a pink power suit designed by Pyer Moss founder Kerby Jean-Raymond. The menswear and womenswear label is known for embracing the designer’s heritage and displaying activism on its runways. Most recently, models were seen wearing T-shirts with political statements on the spring-summer ’19 catwalk, such as “Stop calling 911 on the culture.” Fans of Ross responded to the look, saying that it was a powerful way to start the night.

Dapper Dan x Gucci

For her show-stopping performance and monologue, the actress changed into a tight-fitting sequined jumpsuit accessorized with a cape created by Dapper Dan and Gucci. The collaboration between the Harlem-based designer and the Italian luxury brand launched in 2017, propelling Daniel Day into the mainstream. Still, Dapper Dan’s Boutique and atelier remain in the designer’s original neighborhood of Harlem.

CD Greene

Deeming herself a “Golden Girl,” Ross appeared on the stage in a reflective gold dress featuring sheer panels along her legs. Designer CD Greene is known for incorporating his passion for sculpture into each of his pieces. His designing process starts by sitting with his customer one-on-one with a pad and a pencil.

Shanel Campbell

By wearing an “I am a voter” shirt — a collaboration between When We All Vote and Ross’s stylist Karla Welch — the actress was already making a statement. However, it was also paired perfectly with her standout red skirt by Bronx-native Shanel Campbell. The Parsons graduate recently told WWD that she had “a vision of how I want to see black women in more artistic roles.” Campbell says she is working toward that goal with the design of her pieces.

Virgil Abloh

Ross’s biggest outfit of the night was a one-shoulder tulle gown designed by Virgil Abloh, who came onto the scene when he founded Milan-based fashion house Off-White in 2013. However, he made history when he became the first black artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection in 2018. Now, the native Chicago designer is world-renowned.

Sergio Hudson

The show’s host turned heads when she stepped out in an all-cheetah number, rocking the print from head to toe, courtesy of Sergio Hudson. Complete with gloves and a beret, the ensemble provided the power, sexiness, elegance, and class that the black designer aims to exude through each of his pieces — although Ross herself joked that she was “totally blending in.”

Ross’s printed mermaid gown was made by native Cameroon designer Claude Kameni, who found a passion for art and fashion while living in Central Africa before fine-tuning her skills when she relocated to America. Most of her designs for her line, LavieByCK, are inspired by the bold patterns on the fabric she uses.

Olivier Rousteing

Slipping into something fit for a black-tie occasion, Ross appeared onstage in a sequined Balmain dress by Olivier Rousteing. Alongside Virgil Abloh, Rousteing became one of a handful of black designers to lead a major storied fashion house when he became the creative director of Balmain in 2011 at the age of 25.

Dèshon

Lending her platform to lesser-known designers as well, Ross stunned in a cobalt trench dress by recent Parsons graduate Dèshon. After Ross wore one of the young designer’s pieces during her recent appearance on The Talk, Dèshon still has fewer than 1,000 followers on Instagram — although that’s likely to change with her upcoming collection called No Graceland, especially if Ross is wearing it. Twitter followers have already responded to the look, saying, “I want one!”

Cushnie

Ross closed out the show in a red off-the-shoulder jumpsuit by Cushnie designer Carly Cushnie. The brand, founded in 2008, has become widely recognized for creating feminine and modern silhouettes. In addition to Ross, Cushnie also dresses influential women such as Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Gal Gadot, Lupita Nyong’o, and Jennifer Lopez.
