The Williamsburg Bridge is a prominent suspension bridge that spans the East River in New York City, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is one of the many iconic bridges in the city and plays a crucial role in the transportation network of New York.
Here are some key facts and information about the Williamsburg Bridge:
1. Construction: The construction of the Williamsburg Bridge began in 1896 and was completed in 1903. It was designed by Leffert L. Buck and Henry Hornbostel and was a remarkable engineering feat of its time. 2. Location: The Williamsburg Bridge connects the Lower East Side of Manhattan with the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn. It spans the East River, providing a vital transportation link between the two boroughs. 3. Design: The bridge features a suspension design with two main towers and four main cables that support the roadway. At the time of its completion, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. 4. Dimensions: The Williamsburg Bridge is approximately 7,308 feet (2,227 meters) long, with a main span of 1,600 feet (488 meters). The clearance below the bridge allows for the passage of ships on the East River. 5. Transportation: The bridge accommodates various modes of transportation, including vehicle lanes, pedestrian walkways, and bike lanes. It has historically been an important route for commuters traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn. 6. Historical Significance: The Williamsburg Bridge played a crucial role in the development of Brooklyn and helped facilitate the growth of Williamsburg as a thriving neighborhood. It also provided easier access to jobs in Manhattan for residents of Brooklyn. 7. Renovations: Over the years, the bridge has undergone several renovations and repairs to ensure its structural integrity and safety. These renovations have included upgrades to the road surface, lighting, and the pedestrian and bike paths. 8. Cultural References: The Williamsburg Bridge has featured in various cultural works, including literature, film, and music. It is often seen as a symbol of New York City and has been depicted in numerous artistic forms. 9. Commemorative Plaque: A plaque on the bridge commemorates its completion and the individuals involved in its construction, including the designers and builders. 10. Trolley Service: When the bridge first opened, it included tracks for trolley cars, which were a popular mode of public transportation at the time. These trolley tracks were later removed, but they played a significant role in making the bridge accessible to the public. 11. Artistic Lighting: In recent years, the Williamsburg Bridge has undergone a series of lighting upgrades. The bridge's lighting system has been used creatively to celebrate various holidays and events, making it a visually striking part of New York City's skyline. 12. Historical Preservation: The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has received recognition for its architectural and engineering significance. Efforts have been made to preserve its historic character while ensuring it remains functional and safe. 13. Traffic and Commuting: The Williamsburg Bridge carries a substantial amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic daily, serving as a crucial link between Manhattan's Lower East Side and Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood. It helps alleviate congestion on nearby bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. 14. Views and Photography: The bridge offers breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the East River, and other New York City landmarks. Many photographers and tourists visit the bridge to capture these scenic vistas. 15. Maintenance: Due to the harsh weather conditions and constant use, the Williamsburg Bridge requires regular maintenance. Maintenance crews monitor and repair the bridge to ensure its safety and longevity. 16. Cultural and Community Events: The bridge has also been used as a venue for cultural events, including public art installations, parades, and community gatherings, which highlight its role as a cultural and social hub for the surrounding neighborhoods. 17. Transportation Evolution: The Williamsburg Bridge has witnessed changes in transportation trends over the years, from trolley cars to automobiles and now to cycling and walking. It reflects the evolving transportation needs of the city.
The Williamsburg Bridge is not only a vital transportation link but also an iconic piece of New York City's infrastructure, contributing to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. It continues to be an essential part of the daily lives of commuters and residents in the area.

Who wants to hear the biggest bullshit I've ever experienced and how I narrowly avoided getting scammed out of thousands of dollars?
Buckle up, y'all!
If you've followed me for a bit, then you know I'm moving across the country to live with Alex this week, we're currently in Indiana on our way! However, yesterday my belongings were supposed to be picked up by the moving company. Well, no, they were supposed to be picked up Friday, that was the agreed pick up date but that day when I called they said that there was a two day window -- so they were supposed to arrive 2-4 but then they didn't even get there until almost 8 pm.
So, they were late and then they had the gall to tell me I had more items than they expected and that they hadn't allotted enough space based on my estimate, without even really looking at what I packed. I had told them exactly what I'm bringing and they'd underestimated the amount by 114 cubic feet (which is over $500 off). They said they could take what they could fit in the original estimate space, and anything else would have to stay, or I pay them an extra $1000. I said no, absolutely not, I don't have $1000. So, my sister, my step-dad, and Alex all went to bat for me over this while I'm having a panic attack in the passenger seat of my car. The customer service decided to condescend to not one but two of them by questioning their intelligence and asking if they know what an estimate is. Then, they said that I'd have to pay that day to get it moved, but I was never told I'd have to pay for it the day of pick-up. I said no, and to cancel it. Then the woman on the phone asked me if my dad could just pay it for me as if I'm not an entire adult.
Looking up the company afterwards, I found out that they do this often, and have plenty of complaints on BBB. I did do research beforehand, but if you look up their name "Allegiance Moving and Storage", what comes up is an entirely different company with great reviews, and I feel stupid for being fooled. They also have a tendency of charging people thousands before they will deliver, if they deliver it at all.
When I was setting up the service with them, they sent me agreements to read over and sign. Instead of being an attachment you could easily download and keep for your record, they were links that expired and can't be reached without contacting customer service. So, my stuff is in New York except for a couple bags of clothes and my laptop bag, I don't have a back up plan, and I'm probably not getting my deposit of almost $900 back.
So... Here I am again.

UPDATE 5/22/23:
I have booked a U-Box, and thankfully I can pay for it in little chunks, and it'll be just under $2000 for it to be dropped off, picked up, and shipped to our new place!
If you've got anything to spare, it will go straight to getting my balance with UHaul!

Part 6: Inspirations for the Book
In the past, I've noticed certain Stranger Things comics and tie-ins have similar elements to other books/movies. Tomb of Ybwen paid homage to The Goonies while containing multiple references to Lord of the Rings. Hawkins Horror had several stories taking inspiration from either Stephen King or common urban legends. Rebel Robin, a book centered around Robin discovering her identity as a lesbian, contains plot aspects from 80s movies like Sixteen Candles. Even the upcoming comic The Voyage (set to be released on November 1st) looks like it'll borrow heavily from Alien (1979) except instead of in space with the Xenomorph, it'll be on a cargo ship with the Demogorgon.
While I can't say whether or not this is a coincidence, I noticed that Darkness on the Edge of Town had many similarities to two different properties: A movie called Escape from New York, and a Batman comic called Batman: The Cult.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Escape from New York is a 1981 movie directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell. It takes place in an alternate timeline where the Cold War is still ongoing, and Long Island has been converted into a massive prison for all the criminals (similar to what Hugo Strange does to Gotham's criminal population in Batman Arkham City). During a flight over the island, Air Force One gets hijacked, and the President ends up crashing inside the prison. He gets taken hostage by a gang led by its leader, The Duke, who threatens to kill the President unless he and the other prisoners are granted amnesty and allowed to walk free. In exchange for getting pardoned from a life sentence, the government makes a deal with a man named Snake Plisskin (Kurt Russell's character) to infiltrate New York City and rescue the President within 24 hours.
Like Snake, Hopper is a former war veteran who received honors for his services. Unlike Hopper, who became a cop and moved to NYC, Snake became a criminal after becoming disillusioned with what the United States had become. Both men are forced to undertake a dangerous mission: Snake takes up the task because he was being slated for execution before the situation with the President occured, and Hopper is forced to go undercover in Saint John's cult after Agent Gallup threatens to destroy Hopper's life if he doesn't comply with his demands:
Tumblr media
Both men get put in dangerous situations in New York City at night where they're forced to fight for their lives alongside different companions. There's even a scene from the movie where Snake and his group are attacked by crazies in their car, which is eerily similar to what happens to Martha and Hopper in their car when the blackout happens and the rioters on the street go after them:
youtube
Both the movie and the book feature a charismatic leader of a gang as the main antagonist: Saint John and The Duke. The difference is their motives: Saint John is looking to fulfill his prophesied apocalypse whereas The Duke is hoping to use the President as leverage to help him (and presumably his gang) escape the hellhole New York City has become. In many ways, the Duke is more sympathetic than Saint John because, while he is framed by the movie as a bad guy, his reasons for wanting to get out are easy to understand. It doesn't help that both the President and the government are shown to be self-serving and callous towards the loss of human life, which is something that disgusts Snake. Unlike this book, Escape from New York ends on a bitter note with Snake non-verbally acknowledging that, despite the events that took place, things in the country were not going to change. Snake is also treated as an anti-hero by the narration compared to Hopper who (along with Delgado) are framed in a heroic light.
Likewise, Batman The Cult contains similar elements to Darkness on the Edge of Town in regards to their villains and certain plot points. Like Saint John, Deacon Blackfire is a cult leader who lures in the homeless and the desperate to create an army which he can use to take over Gotham City. He masquerades as a benevolent priest running a homeless shelter much in the same way Saint John and his followers attended support groups as a means of recruiting potential followers.
Tumblr media
Both Saint John and Deacon Blackfire have an understanding of the deeper problems plaguing society. While they claim they want to fix those issues, it's really about them exploiting the current state of things to drive their agendas forward:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them want the hero (i.e. Batman and Hopper) to join them on their crusade and even use drugs and brainwashing as a means of putting the hero under their control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference is Deacon Blackfire succeeds in breaking Batman via holding him prisoner for a week, torturing him, starving him, drugging him, and chipping away at his will. By contrast, Saint John was acting with limited time in trying to brainwash Hopper in the climax, and Hopper manages to fight this long enough to overpower Saint John.
Both Deacon Blackfire and Saint John create an army for the purpose of attacking a city. Both attacks are coordinated, planned out, and cause untold damage and chaos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them preach an ideology and build lore around themselves. Deacon Blackfire claims he's doing God's work while Saint John claims he's acting on behalf of Satan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them are also scarily effective in whipping their followers into a frenzy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where the villains differentiate is how they're defeated. While Saint John is overpowered by Hopper and fatally stabbed (dying with the belief he did the right thing) Deacon Blackfire gets humiliated by Batman in front of his followers. This has the effect of causing said followers to immediately turn on Blackfire for daring to show weakness, as well as realizing they've been duped by Blackfire the entire time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Saint John's followers don't ever see him humiliated the same way Blackfire was, so it's questionable if (after the FBI and NYPD got back control of the city) Saint John still has disciples out there following his defeat who will continue to carry out his work. Not all of them were arrested by Agent Gallup's task force unfortunately. However, it's a moot point since it's likely there won't be a follow up sequel to this book.
Again, I can't confirm if Adam Christopher took inspiration from either Batman The Cult or Escape from New York, but there are so many aspects of those stories similar to the ones found in this book that I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Regardless, I like the parallels between these three stories and how they complement each other in regards to themes and plot.
Final Thoughts:
This is a must-read book! It serves as a nice prequel to the show, and gives more backstory on Hopper while also expanding on his character and his relationship with El. It also fits well with the continuity of the show, and (as far as I can tell) doesn't contain any errors related to canon. It's a thrilling, fast-paced novel with plenty of suspense and insight. If (or when) you get the chance, check it out! :)

Getting to Know Me tag game
Thanks to @pamasaur for tagging me. 😘
Top Three Ships: As of late? Dave York x reader, Tommy Miller x reader and Frankie Morales x reader. (Unsure if I answered this correctly, ships = parings to me. lol)
Favorite color: Blue - has been for years, since I was a wee little Nerdie. Now warming up to reds and purples. Dash of yellow in there sometimes, just for pizazz.
Last song: Only Girl in the World by Rihanna. (I was listening to music on the car ride home and singing along in a key that only I will hear, and likely some poor dogs somewhere. 🤣)
Last Book: A light novel called "Onmyoji and Tengu Eyes: The Spirit Hunters of Tomoe" by Yoshiko Utamine. It had mystery, bromance, angst, supernatural elements and had a modern day Japanese setting. I was hooked, haven't read the second one yet.
Currently Watching: My mom and I started "Loki" season one. After she finished 'The Mandolorian' season three, I told her to pick between Andor and Loki. She told me that she's a Tom Hiddleston fan (news to me) now that she's seen him dance (not sure where, could have been many a video) I now wonder what she is watching on her phone. She spoke about his slender hips and of course his accent. Also watching 'The Irrationals' and 'Found" MPG should not make me feel things in his role on 'Found'. @megamindsecretlair help me understand 😫
Current Obsession: Pedro Pascal, Writing fanfic about Pedro Pascal characters, reading writers' Pedro Pascal character pics, working on my BSN so when I'm ready to leave bedside I can. Also Pedro Pascal stationary and stickers, I spread them on my unit at work. Someone stuck one on a computer and environmental services liked it and left it. I started giving them to docs, NPs, PAs and other departments I like. 🥰
Currently working on: Too many WIPs. I got series hanging in wind, I've made late night notes of ideas that are very strange bullet points when I wake up and I'm trying to focus which I'm not great at. Right now, it would be Tommy Miller, Javier Peña and Dieter, but I may finish my Dave York series first so at least one is finished.
Country I want to visit: Japan for sure. The United Kingdom because of double decker buses. Belize and Ireland due to parts of my family being from there, plus they're so vastly different, how did the one side of my family get to both places?
Welp, per usual, I went too long. It's likely was too much anyone really wanted to know.
No pressure tags: @yorksgirl @awilderi @iamasaddie @beefrobeefcal @beabliss @laurfilijames @musings-of-a-rose @mandoisapunk @josephquinnswhore @maggiemayhemnj

There is a weird dynamic that exists between people who have never Served in the Military and those that have.  Ok, there are more than one but let’s focus on this one. But Civilians, some of them, assume we all know each other and that the Army is all the Branches rolled into. Over the years when people find out I Served they will often say my friend/ my family member/ my mom’s step-mom’s cousins son on her step dads side was in the Army, do you know them? It happened again yesterday, a guy working for me was like “Hey you were in the Army right? Yes, why? My ex-bother in law is in the Marines his name is LCpl. Schmuckatelli, do you know him.” Side stepping the fact that I was in the Army, overlooking the fact that I left the Service almost 15 years ago, no I don’t know your mom’s step-mom’s cousins son on her step dads side. It's like if I asked my buddy who lives in Queens if he knows my buddy who lives in Rochester because they both live in New York. Who can people try to make these bridges so often? Or, and my Nevada peep’s will appreciate this, when people find out I’m from Reno and they are like “So do you go to Las Vegas on the weekends?” What? No fucker LV’s 450 freaking miles away. I don’t just swing by Sin City on the weekends. It’s 450 miles of road Warrior waste lands between here and there. On the other side of that, just tonight the family and I were at a food stand grabbing grub, the license plate frame on  the car in front of us said “USS Catamount LSD-17” that was my grandpa’s ship in the Pacific during WWII. I asked the only guy who looked like he was of age for Viet Nam if that was his car and we talked about the Catamount.  As he left a guy wearing an Army ball cap walked up and I thanked him for his Service we got to talking he was on FOB Falcon in Iraq from Mid-2005 through mid-2006, I was there from mid-2006 until we left in late 2006. The chances of knowing one random individual in the Service is way less likely than randomly meeting someone who was located at the same place you were at the same time and never ran into each other, apparently.

I’M HOME ireneverse thoughts
so i don’t think stands OR hamon exist in that universe first and foremost. lol. emporio is the exception there
second of all dio never existed. the pillarmen (and therefore the stone masks) never existed. kira never existed. diavolo never existed. pucci never existed. at the very least, they don’t exist the way we know them: dio couldve been a poor boy that killed his father and saved his mother because of it. kira couldve been an artist that specializes in pieces focusing on hands. diavolo couldve never been in the drug trade. pucci couldve been the one taken instead and upon hearing his mother’s confession when she’s on her deathbed, he finds perla and wes and makes amends with them.
third: george and mary joestar’s carriage never crashes
the story from there becomes: jonathan grows up an only child with a mother who loves him even if his dad is shit (and he is but this post isnt about george joestar’s sins)
anyway. he becomes an archeologist. he is brought to south america for his phd by zepelli’s sailing and journey service (family business). instead of jonathan finding his loved ones in the midst of a life or death battle, he meets speedwagon, erina, poco, zepelli (as prev mentioned), etc in the more lighthearted strain of completing his thesis
jonathan lives past 19 and enjoys a long life. his son george is born and he serves in wwi up until he learns his wife and childhood friend, lisa lisa, is pregnant, upon which he returns home before anything can happen to him
joseph is born. he grows up knowing his mother and father for real rather than the silhouettes they left over his life. he goes on his own adventures around the atlantic and pacific with caesar, who’s focus is more on doing the best he can with this nitwit cause the success of this journey is what will make or break him being handed the family business. they both end up doing spywork during wwii. they both get blown up by a submarine LMAO but they survive. no one is really sure who exactly married suzi, the ship’s cook, or who got her pregnant (and there is talk about if the man she married was not the biological father of her child), but either way holly comes into the world with essentially three parents and devoted grand and great grand parents
she grows up during uneasy cold war nationally and class war internally, specifically gang wars in new york city. hope is very important to her as a result. then she meets sadao and jotaro is born and they are more than hope; they’re a drive for her to make the world a better place. holly becomes a doctor and runs a very cheap private practice
jotaro goes back and forth between america and japan a lot; between his mom’s medical practice and his dad’s tours, he’s had kinda an unstable home, but he knows he’s loved dearly. he tries to love in return but it’s hard to find how to express that
he meets friends during his travels constantly going back and forth. from them, he learns maybe he should focus less on how to express his love and more just on the act itself; they’ll catch on from there. and they do. and they love him in return. jotaro doesn’t lose any of his friends this lifetime, even if scary things do happen (kakyoin is in a car crash right after their graduation that keeps him from walking again; avdol loses his arms and iggy his paw in a gas explosion; polnareff loses some fingers and toes that means he needs a cane more often than not)
josuke rather than being a forgotten accident this time is more of a happy one; caesar, suzi, and joseph are no strangers to inviting those willing into their bed, and tomoko is no different. somewhere between everything that happened that night, a condom probably broke, but considering their age and money, suzi, caesar, and joseph are more than able to help tomoko when she calls them scared and overwhelmed. they dont fuck around again but tomoko comes to call them good friends. josuke is born and knows all sides of his family from the start, and grows up all the more confident for it. he still styles his hair after a stranger he met once, not because the stranger saved his life, but because the stranger saved a turtle from rocks getting thrown at it, even though it was clear he didn’t really like the wrinkled skin or beady eyes or beak-like mouth of the turtle. josuke wants to be like that; willing to give justice even if he can’t understand or is scared of one side. because of this and morioh being a fairly small town, he ends up quite beloved
giorno is... notably different. for one he was born much earlier than in another universe; he is born in 1899. his father is unquestionably jonathan rather than only partially. his mother is erina. he sails with mario zepelli as his guide and friend and ends up living in italy. he becomes a politician, focused on the citizens rather than image or money or power. he is imprisoned in wwii but breaks out soon after, and focuses efforts on helping citizens all over europe immigrate and otherwise find safety. as he does this, he meets friends all over the continent; abbachio, bruno, trish, narancia, mista, and fugo. when the war ends, he returns to italy, his friends in toe. giorno doesn’t return as a politician but his sway over the general public cannot be disregarded
back in the present day, irene is born in florida. she’s still a little rough around the edges (being in such a red state in the 90s and having parents who divorced because her father came out as gay is not easy no matter the timeline), she’s still a bit of a troublemaker, but this time, due to the lessons jotaro learned from his friends, he doesn’t run from her, and irene therefore knows she is loved. she does almost get framed for murder, an adventure that leads to a bit of illegal roadtripping, a bit of bending and breaking intimidation-of-witness laws, a bit of messy feelings, but she ends up safe: her lawyer and eventual friend, annakiss, helped her out. she meets hermes, she meets wes, she meets foofighters along the way. on the way home from the ordeal after finally getting her name cleared, she meets emporio. and the same as last time, she offers her heart to him. and the same as last time, he accepts it
johnny and gappy also exist in this universe: johnny is jonathan’s cousin, who traveled all over but ended up in amercia and is why jonathan even got interested in studying across the atlantic in the first place, since the masks are no longer there to inspire him. johnny does all kind of odd jobs -- being paraplegic doesn’t help him keep a steady job -- before he ends up as a horse soldier. he quits this soon after after his friend gyro got shot in battle. they both stay in america, not wanting to risk hop across the pond to europe, and end up carving out a nice place in new york for themselves. gappy is josuke’s twin brother and while he is not as popular as his brother, he is no less beloved, given his intellect and his dorky way of showing it
this kinda got like narrative-y basically the point is no stands no hamon no world ending events per se just the joestar family finally fucking together and happy and safe. also they all have birthmarks from where they died in the main verse rather than the star birthmarks. i’ll draw this sometime. in the meantime: the fmaibly....

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - AUGUST 2023
Tumblr media
 Aloha Lāhainā, Aloha ʻĀina
Words cannot express the shock, horror, dismay and grief over the catastrophic destruction of the ancient, historic town of Lāhainā on the Island of Maui. Our aloha and prayers go out to all who are being impacted by this great tragedy. People all over the islands are showing their aloha by mobilizing to send aid and comfort to those devastated by the fires on Maui. Yesterday, I was at Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina, the houseless camp at Aunty Blanche Kahalewai McMillanʻs place in Waimanalo, where the residents were sorting and stacking onto pallets piles of donations from a steady stream of cars dropping off supplies to kōkua the thousands of suddenly houseless people of Maui. By mid-day, there was already enough to fill two forty-foot shipping containers! They will be at the docks today ready to ship to Maui. Aunty Blanche says the drive will continue for as long as it takes... And this is just one small community. The spontaneous outpouring of aloha is coming from many other individuals, groups, businesses, organizations and communities throughout Hawaiʻi nei, adding their kōkua to the dedicated aid organizations like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross... and the mobilization of government emergency agencies by Maui County, the State of Hawaii and the U.S.  Aloha Lives! I am also receiving many expressions of concern and solidarity from friends in the international community — Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania… Their hearts ache with ours. Tomorrow, I leave for two months of back-to-back conferences and meetings in Asia, the South Pacific, Europe and America. I will share that the restoration of Lāhainā and the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom, will be driven by the same resilient spirit of the people of Hawaiʻi, rooted in Aloha. Whether facing and responding to the devastation of tsunami, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or the 130-year-long foreign usurpation, subjugation and abuse of our nation, we will prevail by being the people who embrace Aloha... Aloha ke Aukua (love of God) — Kapu Aloha (sacred love) — Aloha kekahi i kekahi (love for one another) — and Aloha ʻĀina (love for our land, our country).

─𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲, 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐲, 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 [ℹ.]
Pairing: Stephen Strange x OC, (eventually) Sinister Strange x OC
Synopsis: Alma, a newly appointed S.W.O.R.D. director, finds herself working alongside Stephen Strange to confront an inter-dimensional threat two months after he abruptly ended their long-term relationship and broke her heart. A young girl needing their help forces Alma to confront her lingering feelings for Stephen while they search for answers.  [Loosely follows the plot of DSMOM.]
Word count: 3.8k
Warnings: violence, gun use, swearing, unrequited love but also mutual pining, general peril??? Since this fic will eventually feature some smut, I’ll go ahead and say this now: MINORS DO NOT INTERACT! 18+ ONLY
A/N: I saw DSMOM one freakin time and fell so hard for Sinister Strange that I’m writing a multi-part fanfic just to shamelessly ship a self-insert OC with him (and 616 Stephen ofc). I truly hope you enjoy this chapter, even though we haven’t gotten to the best bits yet. I love some good setup in my fics! c:

Silence. That was what a corner office with a view of the New York City skyline got you. Well, not dead silence. There was still the soft, rhythmic ticking of the clock on the wall. The distant sounds of car horns on the street. The clacking of fingertips on a keyboard. For most agents, the quiet, meditative atmosphere of a glass office and the accompanying promotion to regional director of S.W.O.R.D. for the Northeast would be a dream come true. It was the culmination of a career spent running memos to research and development, investigating inter-dimensional anomalies, and occasionally responding to the odd extraterrestrial threat.
A pair of brown eyes glanced up from the computer screen to the bronze plaque hanging on the wall to her left.
The United States Government recognizes Alma Elizabeth Simmons for her bravery and dedicated service during the Battle of New York on May 4, 2012.
This was the only one she had hung of the numerous other medals and plaques that she had earned in her more than fifteen years as an agent. Boots on the ground was all she had known for so long that the transition to ass in an office chair had been a tough pill to swallow.
Still, she had to admit… “Director Simmons” did have a nice ring to it.
It was like an answer to her prayers when the sudden blaring of sirens pierced the silence of her office. Alma nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden interruption, but the satisfaction of putting her computer to sleep pushed aside her momentary shock. It took her two quick strides to make it to the glass door and swing it open, letting in the beautiful cacophony of a facility leaping into action.
“Finch, talk to me,” Alma shouted to her assistant through a rush of agents passing by. “What’s going on?”
“Inter-dimensional visitor, ma’am,” Finch replied, pressing a datapad into her hands that already displayed what little information they had on the incident. He struggled to keep up with her pace as they followed the others to the atrium. “SoHo. Unknown origin. But it’s, uh… big and it’s angry.”
Alma sighed. “Great. Alright, I’m gonna want Squadron 3 on this. Armored vehicles only. And get me one with a laser turret on top.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
---
Her team was suited up and speeding through the city streets less than five minutes later, their convoy of vehicles weaving in and out of traffic as sirens blared and unsuspecting civilians gawked from the sidewalks. Alma could feel her heart pounding excitedly in her chest. It was her first chance since her promotion to be at the front of the action. No more hiding behind a desk while the agents got to have all the fun.
“What’s our ETA?” she asked, catching the driver’s gaze in the rearview mirror.
“Two minutes, ma’am. Traffic allowing.”
“Director?” came a voice from behind her.
“Yes, Murphy?”
“Looks like Stephen Strange is already on the scene, ma’am.”
The back of the vehicle filled with an air of excitement. Hushed but enthusiastic whispers passed between the passengers. These were experienced agents, but the chance to watch an Avenger at work was always thrilling. Alma, however, couldn’t share in their delight. It was bound to happen sooner or later - seeing him again - especially given the work that they both did. All the grief and heartbreak that she had spent the last two months trying to process, to suppress, to overcome, consumed her in an instant. It was a ravenous beast and she, its vulnerable prey.
Perhaps she should have sat this one out, after all.
“Agents–” Alma finally managed to croak out, breathless, before she summoned her composure. “Agents. When we arrive, I want Team Alpha to begin setting up a perimeter and escorting civilians out of the area. We’re going in weapons hot. Understood?”
“Yes, ma’am,” they all said in unison.
“Team Bravo, on me. Engage with the intent to neutralize. And watch each other’s–”
The vehicle squealed to a stop just short of the next intersection, narrowly avoiding the enormous, tentacled creature that was lumbering down the street with a city bus in its grips.
“There’s our bogey! Go!”
Their convoy of armored vehicles sprung into action. Agents poured out of the vans and onto the road as instructed. “Moreno! Rouse! Bring the Cannon and rendezvous with us. You four – with me!”
For her first incident as director, Alma didn’t think she was doing too badly so far. But the real test of her leadership skills was currently rounding the next street corner. She took off sprinting with the other four agents in tow, dodging abandoned cars and fallen street lamps in pursuit of the creature. A familiar red blur whizzed through the intersection, causing the lump in Alma’s through to grow even larger. The sooner this was over, the better.
As the squad turned onto the next street, they were met with their first full view of the creature in all its many-tentacled splendor. They immediately began firing on the monstrosity, which responded to the sting of their bullets with a high-pitched screech. A mass of tentacles came hurtling toward them, grabbing two of the agents and tossing them aside as if they weighed nothing. Alma prepared herself for the inevitable when something else wrapped around her shoulders and swiftly pulled her out of the creature’s reach. Once she skittered to a stop, she swiveled around to see who had saved her only to see Stephen’s Cloak of Levitation hovering behind her.
“Oh,” Alma breathed with a smile. “Hey, you.”
The Cloak drew in closer, wrapping a bit of its cloth around her in a sort of hug.
“Yeah, I’ve missed you, too,” she chuckled. “Thanks for the assist.”
Alma thought the Cloak nodded to her before it flew off, presumably back to its master. The creature, in the meantime, had become distracted by something else, which gave her a window of opportunity to check on the agents who had been thrown. They were fine, if not a little shaken up, and they would definitely have a few bruises later on. But it was her responsibility to make sure that wouldn’t happen to them again.
Pressing on her earpiece, she barked, “Where is my Cannon?” to the two agents who she had tasked with bringing the weapon.
“Coming up on you now, ma’am,” a breathless voice replied.
S.W.O.R.D.’s R&D department had been cooking up prototype weapons for occasions just like these but hadn’t had many opportunities to test them in the field. Alma saw two outcomes: either the Cannon was going to work and kill the creature or it would explode in her hands and kill her in a blaze of glory.
The agents promptly arrived with the weapon, a laser cannon that must have weighed more than fifty pounds and had a smooth, silver exterior that pulsed with a pale blue glow. Alma could feel the thing humming with energy beneath her fingertips. With the press of a button, the Cannon whined to life as it began to charge up its laser pulse. The bar on the top blinked rhythmically - one light for every minute it needed to charge. R&D said the process would take three minutes. Hopefully, that would be enough time.
Throwing the Cannon’s strap over her shoulder, Alma resumed her pursuit of the creature with her agents on her heels. “Keep it engaged until I’m ready to fire!” She had to shout over the screams of panicked civilians and the distant sirens that were steadily growing louder.
The team had to dodge a flying sedan before they could resume shooting at the creature, which hardly seemed interested in them this time. It was after something else. No, someone? There was little time to discern who or what its target was. An Eldritch Whip suddenly wrapped around one of the creature’s tentacles, but it broke free and grabbed the spell’s caster, hurtling him into a van on the opposite curb.
Alma wanted to run to him but her legs wouldn’t budge. She could only stand there, gawking, as Stephen Strange shook off the blow and rose to his feet. It was merely a coincidence that he looked in her direction. But as soon as their gazes locked, the world around them fell away. Nothing else mattered. Nothing else existed. Not the creature, not the people running past them, not even the ground beneath her feet. All Alma could hear was her hammering pulse and all she could see was him.
It was clear by the way Stephen’s shoulders dropped that he could discern the hurt on her face. There was a yearning in her eyes, too, that was unmistakable. Finally, he broke eye contact with her to look down. He was thinking. He always drummed his fingers against his leg like that when he was thinking. But the second he looked up again, one of the creature’s tentacles wrapped around him and squeezed. Neither one had seen it coming, lost as they were in the sight of one another.
“No!” Alma bellowed as the creature lifted Stephen into the air. He struggled, but his arms were pinned to his sides. No spells. No way to save himself.
The third light on the Cannon was blinking, now. Less than a minute until it was ready to fire.
“Ugh, come on, fucking thing!” Alma gritted through her teeth, giving the weapon a little shake as though that would help it finish its charge more quickly. Surely it was a coincidence that the light stopped blinking just then and the end of the weapon’s barrel lit up with a sickeningly bright glow. Her brow lifted in surprise. “Huh. Okay, then.”
Alma struggled to brace the Cannon against her hip so she could aim the barrel at the creature, which still had a tight grip on Stephen and didn’t seem inclined to let him go. It was trying to escape the barrage of gunfire by clambering up a skyscraper, sending boulder-sized pieces of limestone tumbling to the earth.
Why did they always have to climb the buildings like the city was some kind of playground?
The Cannon beeped as Alma followed the creature up the building’s facade, signaling that it had the thing squarely in its crosshairs. She hesitated for only a second and hoped against all hope that the weapon wouldn’t backfire before pulling the trigger. To her relief, a glorious beam of light left the Cannon’s barrel with a roar, illuminating everything in a fifty-foot radius as it came into contact with the creature’s flesh.
The being had only a second to let out an ear-shattering screech. The beam’s energy quickly traveled through its body, searing every vein, muscle, and limb. In an instant, the creature disintegrated into ash. Stephen, finally released from its clutches, let out a yell as he began his eight-story fall. Not a moment later, the Cloak of Levitation seamlessly caught him in mid-air and gently lowered him back to the road before disappearing into the sky once again.
The momentary confidence and satisfaction that came from defeating the creature evaporated as Stephen jogged over to Alma. An awkward pause followed while the two struggled to find what to say to one another. Stephen opened and closed his mouth several times, even drew in a quick breath before stopping himself. Clearing his throat, he gestured emphatically at the Cannon that Alma was gripping so tightly that the tips of her fingers had turned white.
“That’s a… fun weapon you’ve got there,” Stephen finally managed.
Alma could only raise her eyebrows in response. His first words to her in two months and those were the ones he chose? Well, since he wanted to be quippy with her, the least she could do was respond in kind.
“Oh, you like it? It’s a prototype.” She slapped its metallic exterior. “You can… kill so many giant tentacled freaks with this bad boy.”
Alma winced at her bungled attempt at humor. He was so much better at it than her. It was one of her favorite things about him - the way he had always been able to make her laugh.
“You agents and your toys,” Stephen remarked with a lopsided grin.
They stood there silently for another moment, Alma shuffling her feet and Stephen fiddling with his hands. But he finally beat her to the punch, speaking just as her lips parted to say something herself.
“Your hair is different.” Stephen mimicked the shape of her short, black bob with his hands. “It looks nice.”
“Thanks.” A smile passed fleetingly across her lips before her expression turned serious. “Are you okay, Stephen?”
Stephen nodded, flashing a smile so warm that Alma knew she must have turned pink. “I’m okay.”
Someone cleared their voice behind her. “Director Simmons?”
Stephen raised his eyebrows, shocked, impressed, and proud all in equal measure. “Director.”
Alma ignored him and turned to her agent. “Yes, Moreno?”
“Emergency services are on scene, ma’am. Some civilians wounded, no casualties.”
“And one hell of a lot of property damage,” she commented, finally taking a second to look around at the trail of destruction that the creature had left in its wake. “Can’t wait for the paperwork on this one.” She sighed. “Thanks, Moreno. Can you bring this back to the truck and coordinate with first responders while I debrief with,” her eyes flitted to Stephen for less than a second, “Doctor Strange?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Moreno said, taking the Cannon with him as he left the two of them alone again.
“Debrief, huh?” Stephen teased. “Is that what you’re calling it?” But this wasn’t exactly an excuse she had cooked up to talk to him more, even if it was what the little voice in the back of her head was begging for her to do.
Alma played it cool, brushing off his question with a sincere: “Well, we just had a visit from a cyclops cthulhu monster from another dimension, Stephen. It’s kind of my job to interview the parties involved about what the hell just happened.”
“Speaking of parties involved…” he began, his head turning to where the Cloak of Levitation had returned carrying a young girl like it was a magic carpet.
The girl started turning on her heel to run when she caught sight of Alma and an excited look of recognition lit up her face. Instead, she came barreling into Alma and threw her arms around her in a tight embrace.
“Alma, holy crap! You killed it! You saved me!”
Alma exchanged a confused look with Stephen, who shrugged and shook his head to say that he didn’t know this kid either.
“You’re… welcome,” Alma stammered. “Sorry, do we know each other?”
“Oh, well–” The girl sheepishly withdrew from their hug. “Yeah. And no. Kind of.”
A million questions bounced around Alma’s head, so she settled on the most basic one to start. “Who are you?”
“Yeah, I was gonna ask that same question,” Stephen chimed in. “More importantly, what did that creature want with you, kid?”
“And where are your parents?” Alma’s brow furrowed in concern. “Do you need us to call them for you?”
The girl’s head whipped from Alma to Stephen and back again amid their barrage of questions.
“We’re not gonna hurt you, okay?” Alma assured her. “We’re just trying to understand what’s going on.”
“Look, giant teen-eating monsters aside, I have something important that’s bothering me.” Stephen took a step closer to the kid. “Why were you in my dream last night?”
The girl shook her head. “That wasn’t a dream. It was another part of the Multiverse.”
Alma and Stephen exchanged a look. S.W.O.R.D. had spent a little time researching other dimensions - other universes - but their knowledge about the Multiverse was still sorely lacking. Some of her colleagues didn’t even believe that such a thing could really exist. The chance to interview this girl could prove invaluable to their work and to mitigating future threats.
“Do you guys have pizza in this universe?” the girl suddenly asked.
What a way to change the subject, Alma thought. Leave it to a kid to ask for pizza right after evading death by octopus monster.
“Yeah, we have pizza.”
---
The girl sat across the table from Alma and Stephen, devouring slice after slice of pizza as though her meal was being timed. Alma’s fingers absent-mindedly drummed against the screen of her datapad as she sat watching the kid with a curious gaze. She couldn’t have been older than fifteen, maybe sixteen. She was shrouded in mystery, and yet no one in the restaurant would have suspected that she was any different than your average teenager just by looking at her.
“Slow down, kid. You’re gonna get a stomach ache.” Stephen spoke with a level of care in his voice that Alma found sweet.
“She said she was hungry, Stephen.”
“Yeah,” the girl agreed with Alma between bites. “And besides, I’m from another universe. You don’t know if my stomach even works the same as yours.”
“I don’t even know if you’re really from another universe like you keep saying you are.” Stephen tilted his head. “I’m still waiting to be enlightened.”
“Is your Stephen always this grumpy?” the kid turned her attention to Alma, who chuckled in response.
“He has his moments.”
The girl’s eyebrows raised. “Guess this is one of them.”
“Alright,” Stephen interrupted their conversation, causing the two ladies to exchange a little grin. “You know, I left a very nice wedding to save a smart-ass kid from being eaten by an octopus. Now, tell me–”
Alma’s head snapped to him. Christine’s wedding. They had planned on going together, initially. “Oh, you ended up going?”
“Did you guys get married?!” the girl interjected excitedly.
“No. We’re not married,” Alma replied.
“No, we didn’t,” Stephen said in unison with her. “And yes, I did go.”
“Wait, you’re not married?” The girl sounded stunned, confused even. “You were married in every other universe I’ve been to.”
An uncomfortable look passed between Stephen and Alma that the kid definitely noticed.
“No, we’re–” Stephen cleared his throat. “–not together any more.”
The girl dropped the slice of pizza she was working on in shock. “What?”
Stephen’s words cut through Alma’s heart, reopening the wounds she’d spent the last two months trying to heal. She’d made it through, mostly by pouring herself into her work. It was probably what had earned her the promotion to director. Things in her life were starting to feel normal again after so much change, so this verbal reminder of what once was and what could have been… oh, it hurt to hear.
“But–” the girl continued, her disappointment clear. “You’re always together. You’re, like… soulmates.”
“Tell that to Stephen,” Alma said under her breath, low enough that she didn’t think either of them heard. But the way he turned to look at her told her otherwise. Instead of meeting his gaze, she focused her attention on her datapad.
“Sorry.” The kid looked a bit guilty for stirring up sore feelings between them. “So, uh… you wanted me to explain what’s going on.”
“Yes.” Stephen leaned closer, resting his forearms on the table. “Why was that thing trying to eat you?
“It wasn’t trying to eat me; it was trying to kidnap me and take me to this… demon who wanted to steal my power.”
“Power. What power?”
The kid took a deep breath. “I can travel the Multiverse.”
“What?” Stephen blurted out.
Alma, who had been typing on her datapad, finally looked up. Her eyes reflected an equal amount of awe and concern. “How?”
“I don’t know. I can’t control it. It only happens when I’m really, really afraid. The last universe I was in–” She looked at Stephen “–the other you was trying to help me. But the demon caught up with us.”
A sudden realization flashed across his features. “The fight from my dream.”
“I already told you,” the girl urged. “That wasn’t a dream. I can prove it…!”
Stephen suddenly rose to his feet, sending his chair scraping backwards across the tile floor. “Alright, pizza time’s over.”
“Wh– Stephen, I’m not done here.” Alma gestured to her datapad in annoyance.
Stephen leaned down to whisper to her, coming close enough that she could feel his breath on her temple. The sensation sent a chill down her spine. “I have to take her to Kamar-Taj. Wong has to know about this. If this ‘demon’ is after her, it won’t stop just because we killed its minion.”
When Alma tilted her head toward him, she briefly lost herself in his startlingly blue eyes. Blinking, she considered his idea. “You think he’ll have answers?”
“Maybe. I hope so. If not, then I guess I’ll have to see who else might know what to do.”
“Such as?”
“Wanda Maximoff?”
Alma set her datapad down and turned fully to face him. “Stephen, no. Do you know what she did in Westview?
“Yeah,” he shrugged, “mass kidnapping by way of sitcoms.”
“I was there.” She needed him to know how serious she was. “I saw it all. I don’t think that she can be trusted.”
“Alma. I have to try. Or the entire Multiverse could be at risk.”
"Damnit.” He was right. Rolling her eyes, she relented with a heavy sigh. “I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“Don’t I always?” He lingered for a moment before standing upright again and swooshing around the table. “Alright, kid. Come on.”
“Wait–” Alma stood up as the girl began to follow Stephen, meeting the two of them near the door. “I don’t think we ever caught your name.”
“Oh… right.” The girl must have forgotten that they didn’t already know her like the other versions of them supposedly did. “I’m America. America Chavez.”
Alma smiled warmly. “America. It’s nice to meet you. Go with Stephen, now. He and the other sorcerers will keep you safe.”
“I hope so.” There was an air of doubt in America’s voice.
Before Stephen could reach for the door handle, Alma grabbed his forearm to stop him. When he looked down, she withdrew her hand as quickly as she would have if she had touched an open flame.
“Anything else you learn from her - anything at all - you better keep me in the loop,” she said softly, but firmly.
“Aye aye, madame director.” Stephen winked.
“I mean it.” Alma sighed and slipped one of her freshly-printed business cards into his hand. “Call my office.”
He took one look at the card and tried to hand it back to her. “I already have your number.”
“Stephen.”
Please don’t call my cell, her heart cried. She couldn’t bear to see the little red hearts next to his name on the call screen.
“Alright,” he breathed as he slipped the card into his pocket for safe keeping. “I’ll be in touch.” He nodded to America, who gave Alma another quick hug.
“Sorry, force of habit,” she chuckled before following Stephen out of the restaurant.
Alma sighed as though she had been holding her breath for the last hour and slumped into one of the chairs at their table. Her hand reached for the last slice of pizza. She’d earned it.

Phase One: Celebrity Take Down (1998–2002)
This phase one plot summary is adapted from Rise of the Ogre, phase one interviews, The Apex Tapes, music videos and the phase one Kong Studios website.
The story of Gorillaz begins on the 15th of August 1997. Stuart Pot was a mentally deficient keyboard enthusiast and part-time employee at Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium. Satanist hoodlum Murdoc Niccals decided to ram-raid Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium to procure synthesizer equipment in order to establish a "chart-topping" musical group. However, Murdoc ended up driving his Vauxhall Astra through the building and directly into Stu-Pot's head, permanently damaging ("fracturing") Stu-Pot's left eye and putting him into a catatonic state. Murdoc was sentenced to "30,000 hours of community service, plus 10 hours every week of caring for the injured Stu-Pot". Not long after, Murdoc again injured Stu-Pot in a car accident in Nottingham's Tesco car park when attempting a 360° in order to impress some women. During the initial rotation, he was thrown through the windshield and landed face-first on a curb. This permanently damaged Stu-Pot's right eye but revived him from his coma. Impressed by Stu-Pot’s new look, Murdoc then recruited the newly recovered (albeit still mentally defective) Stu-Pot as the keyboardist and vocalist for his group, re-dubbing him 2-D for the matching pair of dents in his head from the accidents.
In September of 1997, Murdoc acquired the property of the Khong Mansion, a sprawling haunted studio with a rather shady history, on a website named 'Gigantic Disused Haunted Studios In The Middle Of No-Where'. The mansion was situated atop a hill in the midst of a run-down cemetery and landfill in Districtshire, Essex. Shortly after, he renamed the building and Gorillaz' new headquarters to 'Kong Studios'.
Murdoc then found a drummer for the group in a Soho record store: an African-American expatriate Russel Hobbs. Russel was a middle-class New York native and was deeply troubled as a youth. He was expelled from an expensive private school for suffering from demonic possession. The trauma of said possession resulted in a four-year coma from which Russel was roused only by an elaborately executed exorcism. After his recovery, Russel began attending Brooklyn High School, where he quickly cultivated friendships with a group of rappers, DJs, MCs, and street musicians. He has said that "hip-hop saved [his] soul."
This was a short-lived respite, however, as all of Russel's newfound friends were suddenly gunned down one night in a drive-by shooting. Russel, the sole survivor, became the unwilling receptacle for the spirits of all of his slain compatriots, most notable of whom was the rhyme-dropping blue phantom, Del. With their latent possession of his body, Russel gained incredible musical prowess in percussion, rap, and hip-hop as well as a disturbing side-effect: his eyes glowed an eerie white. With this new and violent turn of events, Russel's family shipped him off to England to live with his uncle in Belsize Park in hopes of helping him recover from his traumas quietly - not realizing they'd put him directly into the path of Murdoc's aspirations to superstardom, and the excesses that came along with it.
2-D, Murdoc, Russel, Paula and a gorilla that plays the bongos Russel got a part-time job working in a Soho record store, called "Big Rick Black's Record Shack", where he met Murdoc Niccals. When Murdoc asked for an obscure 50s record, he slipped a bag over Russel's head and took him to Kong Studios. Russel was impressed by the demos that 2-D and Murdoc had produced and he chose to stay there, despite having been kidnapped. At that point, all the fledgling group needed was a guitarist. The band decided to draft in 2-D's girlfriend at the time, Paula Cracker, to play the guitar. With that, the early working group, Gorilla, was formed (other names were also considered, such as Satan's Scrotum, Thor's Raw, Number Of The Beats, Meatus and Asterix, but ‘Gorilla’ was the chosen one).
One night, in the depths of Kong Studios, Russel awoke to find Murdoc and Paula having an affair in cubicle #3 of the Kong bathrooms. Disgusted by this, Russel broke Murdoc's nose five times (though Murdoc's nose had also been previous broken many times before this occasion). Like so many British bands before them, the trio placed an advertisement in NME in search of a guitarist. The same day the ad ran, a FedEx freight container from Japan was delivered to their doorstep and out jumped a mysterious amnesiac 7-year-old wielding a Gibson Les Paul guitar. The tiny girl made an incomprehensible introduction in Japanese and tore into a "riff to end all riffs", as described by Murdoc, which ended with an impressive karate kick to the air. She then bowed, and spoke a single word in English to the stunned boys, which became her moniker: "Noodle". By April 1998, the band was finally assembled, changing their name from Gorilla to Gorillaz via Noodle's recommendation. Their first song was called Ghost Train and was recorded at Kong Studios. Murdoc posted a copy of the song, some photos of the band and a manifesto over to Mr. Whiffy Smithy at EMI.
On the 5th of November 1998, Gorillaz played their first show at the Camden Brownhouse which ended prematurely due to a riot during their song Punk. EMI A&R man Whiffy Smiffy discharged several rounds from a shotgun to disperse the crowd enough to make his way to the stage and quickly signed them to the label. The following evening, Gorillaz attended their record label signing party. The band was gifted a seven-foot cheque, and also met a long-time collaborator, Damon Albarn. Damon would go on to be an influential part of the band, serving as a vocal coach for 2-D. However, Murdoc was and still is very jealous of Damon and frequently attempts to poison him and steal his demos.
In December 1998, the band began the recording sessions for their debut album, spending the entirety of 1999 recording in Kong. After a year's worth of recordings, the band felt as though there was something missing from the album, so they decided to draft in Dan The Automator as producer to help provide extras. One of the songs which were being recorded for the band’s debut album was Clint Eastwood. Initially, the song featured vocals by Murdoc, described by the band as “grating, colourless and atonal”. Dan suggested that the song could be improved by replacing his vocals with a rap section, something that not only the band agreed with but that seemed to trigger a ghostly summoning: the ghost of Del, one of Russel’s friends killed in the drive-by shooting, emerged from his body as he went into a brief coma while delivering the rap verses for the song, shocking everyone around including Russel himself.
After that, Dan made the decision to move the album recordings over to the sun-kissed beaches of Jamaica. From April to May 2000, the band recorded the final tracks in Jamaica, before production on the album finally finished in June 2000.
2-D and Murdoc in Jamaica: May 2000 Upon returning to Kong after the completion of the album, the band began making plans for their first music video. The band initially sourced Italian director Paulo Skinbacio to direct the music video for the song Tomorrow Comes Today. The truth is, however, Skinbacio had never been on a film shoot in his life. The music video for the song premiered in a garbage bin outside the music label office. The band decided to fire Skinbacio, which led to him threatening the group in German. Now in need of another director, Damon Albarn suggested his old troublemaker flatmate Jamie Hewlett. Jamie was brought to Kong, and agreed to direct the video. He would later become a hugely influential part of Gorillaz, going on to direct and assist the band's entire videography.
Gorillaz made their public debut with the Tomorrow Comes Today EP and the music video for the song on the 27th of November 2000. Next year, on the 5th of March 2001, Gorillaz released their debut single, Clint Eastwood, featuring Del the Ghost Rapper. The song and its accompanying video became a smash hit and would go on to give Gorillaz the push towards mainstream popularity.
On the 22nd of March 2001, Gorillaz performed their second-ever gig at the London Scala. The gig was televised live on MTV, and was available for rewatch on the band's website.
Gorillaz (2001) On the 26th of March 2001, Gorillaz’ self-titled debut album released to the public. The album was a huge success, charting at Nº3 on the UK albums chart, and Nº14 on the US Billboard 200, going on to sell 7 million copies worldwide. Everyone was celebrating the release of the album, except for Murdoc, whose prized Winnebago was stolen the same day as the album's release. Someone over at EMI had given away the Winnebago keys along with a copy of the album. The person in question who got ahold of the keys was a man named Dr. Wurzel, who started a GeoCities page where he would post photos of his many adventures with Murdoc's mobile home. An online craze began on the Gorillaz website, with Murdoc initiating a competition for fans to find his Winnebago. During this time, Dr. Wurzel leaked Gorillaz’ first track, Ghost Train, and a picture of the band when Paula was still a guitarist. At some point in late 2001, Murdoc (or the authorities) apprehended the crazed doctor and returned the Winnebago to its rightful home in the Kong Studios Carpark.
In the Spring of 2001, the band began recording a music video for the track 5/4, but this was later scrapped in favour of a music video for the track 19-2000, which later released on the 25th of June 2001.
Murdoc and Noodle in Japan: August 2001 In August 2001, Gorillaz decided to tour Japan. However, this lead to Noodle beginning to have melancholic feelings and thoughts, not knowing about her past and feeling isolated from her homeland. It was also during this time when Noodle began to suffer from nightmares regarding her forgotten past. Russel decided to buy her a jetpack to cheer her up. In the Fall of the same year, the band embarked on a tour of Europe. Not long after the tour, the band released their 3rd single and the final music video of their debut album, Rock the House.
Back at the Japan tour, Gorillaz noted that their popularity there wasn't as big as it was in other parts of the world. To attempt to boost their album sales and popularity, the band came up with G-Sides, a compilation album that consisted of bonus tracks, b-sides, and remixes from the band's singles off their debut album. This had the desired effect, as G-Sides was released later that December, and went on to sell half a million copies worldwide.
G-Sides (2001) On the 11th of September 2001, due to the collapse of the twin towers and closed airports, rap group D12 were left stranded in London. Gorillaz allowed the group to stay at Kong Studios for the time being, during which the singçe 911 was born, serving as a response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The song would later feature contributions from The Specials frontman, Terry Hall. The song was released as a downloadable single later that winter on both Gorillaz and D12's websites.
In Christmas 2001, Gorillaz released a series of little shorts known as G-Bitez which allowed fans to gain an insight into how the band members lived off-screen. On the 20th of February 2002, Gorillaz performed at the BRIT Awards with hip hop group Phi-Life Cypher, where they were nominated for 6 Awards but won nothing.
From 23rd February 2002 to 11th March 2002, Gorillaz embarked on an 11-month tour of North America. The tour was met with issues from the beginning, as Murdoc was arrested as soon as the band arrived in America, due to an incident in Nebraska 15 years ago. Murdoc made it on stage just in time after paying the $500,000 bail. During this tour, Noodle began suffering from nightmares again, which led to her losing much sleep. The band passed this off as a feeling of road fatigue and touring at a young age.
On the 25th of February 2002, the band released the final single of their debut album, which was a single re-release of "Tomorrow Comes Today", with two new B-side tracks instead of the previous ones.
The tour was going pretty well for a while, until the disastrous show in Mexico on the 11th of March 2002. The desks and monitors malfunctioned during the soundcheck due to the switch in voltage levels, 2-D had eaten a spicy Mexican burrito the night before and had diarrhoea, Murdoc whacked a fan who had jumped on stage on the head with his bass, Russel had a heart attack mid-show and needed vitamin injections, Noodle was on a trigger due to no sleep, one of Siegfried & Roy's tigers got drunk and stole a motorcycle, some threw a horse lung onto the stage and to top it all off, a giant inflatable gorilla head crushed several kids, who had to wait 48 hours before they could be set free.
Gorillaz Vs. Spacemonkeyz: July 2002 After the end of the tour, Gorillaz took a six-month break in L.A. on the 13th of March. There they attempted to get a movie project off the ground. The band played their last gig together at the Isle of MTV Festival in Portugal on the 20th of July. At the end of the gig, a fan asked Murdoc to sign a CD for him, the CD in question being a release from a group associated with Gorillaz that he didn't even know of: these were the Spacemonkeyz - three chimps, who have tested lab monkeys that were sent up to space. Upon arriving back to Earth, the chimps stumbled upon Kong Studios, after 2-D had accidentally left the studio front doors open before the band left for the tour, which allowed the Spacemonkeyz to break in, and steal the master tapes for the band's album. The Spacemonkeyz created the reworkings album Laika Come Home which was released on the 1st of July 2002.
After the tour ended, Gorillaz tried to create a movie, but everyone was too concentrated on doing drugs and hanging out with celebrities. Murdoc almost got a TV show, but they replaced him at the last minute. During the film's production, the band worked with director Alfred C. Klinker, who kept changing the script every day, this led to the band eventually firing Klinker, and deciding to check into a Hollywood motel to write the film themselves in August 2002. However, this did not work, as constant fights broke out between the band members, and a sense of distrust was grown among everybody. Alas, the film was not meant to be, due in part to extensive over-partying, in-fighting, and disagreements with producers, directors, and a notable incident of Murdoc getting himself banned from the Playboy Mansion for stealing ashtrays. It all came to a head when one fight led to Murdoc attempting to strangle 2-D to death. Russel and Noodle broke up the fight, but Murdoc, finally sick of it all, walked out of the motel, and ended Gorillaz there and then.
Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades (2004–2008)
Murdoc in Jail: October 2002 This phase two plot summary is adapted from Rise of the Ogre, phase two interviews, We Are The Dury, music videos, and the phase two Kong Studios website.
After attempting to kill 2-D and leaving Gorillaz, Murdoc headed off to Mexico to get some sun and relax. However, after using fake dud cheques at a brothel, Murdoc was arrested and sentenced to thirty years at La Mesa State Prison on the 31st of October 2002. During this time, Murdoc met cellmates who taught him a bit of black magic, and acquired himself a pet raven named Cortez.
Meanwhile, that same evening, Kong Studios had been shut down tight in its owner's absence by local law enforcement, after an unknown man was seen running, naked and in hysterics, in the marshes near the studio. The police proceeded to keep the area secured while they investigated the strange paranormal events surrounding Kong.
After Murdoc, the next band member to leave was Noodle. Noodle went back to Japan in a fruitful attempt to uncover the secrets of her own past after suffering from nightmares and visions on the Gorillaz Tour. Noodle left for Japan on the 1st of October 2002, where she checked into a capsule hotel and began her search.
2-D working at his father's funfair: December 2002 2-D was the next one to leave. He headed out into the world of L.A., rubbing elbows with Brian Setzer, joining The Viper Room Club, and moving into an apartment flat with actress Britt Ekland. However, after Britt spent every night banging on the walls and building a wicker statue, and getting sick of the Los Angeles lifestyle, 2-D decided to go back to Eastbourne and work at his father's funfair. 2-D returned to England on November 25th 2002. It was during this time that 2-D's ego got a significant boost and he re-established his grip on reality, coming to terms with his newfound pop icon status with the ladies. He also began a friendship with Shane Lynch from Boyzone. 2-D also began to grow a resentment for Murdoc, breaking free of adoring his abuser.
Russel remained in L.A. for some time but became increasingly haunted by The Grim Reaper, who eventually banished Del from his body. Luckily, Russel was approached by Ike Turner who offered him sanctuary in his basement to recover from this experience.
Noodle and Mike The Monkey return to Kong Studios: October 2003 After a year of searching in Japan, Noodle was close to giving up on her search, she decided to head down to a sushi bar in downtown Hong Kong, to eat in woe. While she was there a waiter called for an order of "Ocean Bacon" and all of Noodle's memories came flooding back. she was reunited with her mentor, Mr. Kyuzo who was working as a chef at the establishment and learned that she was part of a secret government super soldier project and could speak English fluently. Noodle was the only survivor after the project was scrapped. Mr. Kyuzo erased Noodle's memory using the words, "Ocean Bacon" and sent her off to England in the FedEx crate. Armed with her newfound knowledge and iron resolve, Noodle decided to return to Kong Studios. on October 27th 2003, Noodle returned to Kong and discovered that the building had fallen into a state of disrepair during the band's absence. She also discovered that the building was invested by zombies and monster-infested darkness. Using the Kong security room as a safe house Noodle slowly cleaned the building of its unwanted inhabitants. Now knowing English, Noodle began to soak up what was playing on her TV in the security room and discovered society was being fed manufactured shit. It was here that Noodle began writing and putting together the concepts of the band's sophomore album Demon Days.
While Noodle was clearing Kong, Russel was still recovering in Ike Turner's basement, it was here that Russel began recording demos for a solo hip-hop album. However, after seeing hallucinations of demons flying out the speakers, Russel decided to bury the demo tapes, believing that they were causing several world problems.
Russel in Ike Turner's basement: January 2004 Finally, in February 2004, Noodle finally cleared Kong of the undead and began contacting her bandmates, but Murdoc was still in prison. After spending a year in jail, his patience began wearing thin and he teamed up with his cellmates and escaped from La Mesa State. He returned to the Chicken Choker brothel, to commit the same crime he did before, then headed over to the airport and flew back to England.
Noodle texted her bandmates, and on the 3rd of March 2004, 2-D, Murdoc, and Russel returned to Kong Studios. Gorillaz was together again. The band caught each other up on what they had been up to before Noodle unveiled her “Demon Days” project. Recording for the album began the next day.
Noodle drafted in Damon, and producer Danger Mouse to help out with the record. The main story of Demon Days was to depict a post-9/11 world, with each track dealing with a different topic/demon. Noodle also set out to make the album prove that Gorillaz was more than a marketing ploy gimmick, as many critics accused Gorillaz in regards to their last album. Recordings were completed in November 2004. A month later on the 12th of December 2004, Gorillaz announced their comeback with the release of a new music video for a new song called Rockit. Along with this was Noodle setting up the "Search For A Star" contest. A competition in which fans could submit themselves doing a talent, and submit said video or piece of artwork to the Gorillaz website. The band also launched the Reject False Icons campaign, which encouraged fans to reject false celebrity icons. The cherry on top of all of this was a complete renovation to Kong Studios, new rooms and new minigames for fans to explore and interact with.
Gorillaz reunite: March 2004 On the 9th of May 2005, Gorillaz released the lead single and music video off their Demon Days album Feel Good Inc. featuring hip hop trio De La Soul. The song and video were a huge success. Once more bringing Gorillaz mainstream, charting increasingly well, and properly replacing Clint Eastwood as Gorillaz’ signature tune.
On the 11th of May 2005, the Demon Days album was released in Japan. It received critical acclaim, topped many charts, sold millions of copies, and was listed on various publications' lists of the best albums both of 2005 and 2000s in general. In order to promote the album in the US, the band came up with the idea for the Demon Detour; a series of live radio shows across many major cities and radio stations without the need for big screens or concert promoters. The band some of their guests from the album booked at Sarm West Studios to rehearse the songs and record them for quality control, which became known as the Sarm Studios Session.
Like always, however, issues immediately began; when they arrived at Sarm, they started to receive "odd phone calls, disturbing messages and eventually blatant death threats", and while on the Demon Detour the band's tour bus was being shot at consistently every night. The band tried putting together who was shooting at them, suspects included Paula Cracker, Paulo Skinbacio, Alfred C. Klinker, Dr. Wurzel and Noodle's Japanese Government bosses. To keep his mind stable, Russel began experimenting with taxidermy during this time. Eventually, the band started getting sick of being shot at every night (as anyone probably would), Mand urdoc decided to take things into his own hands, asking the tour manager Jimmy Manson to see what he could do about the shootings. The next night, the shootings stopped, and the tour continued as usual.
After the Demon Detour, the band returned to Kong, where Noodle hatched secret plans for the 2nd Demon Days music video. Noodle recorded the DARE music video, without letting any of the other band members know. The single and video were later released on the 29th of August 2005, reaching No.1 on the UK Singles Chart, being the only Gorillaz single to do so at the time.
Later that same summer, Gorillaz headed off to NamibW desert to record the music video for the song Dirty Harry featuring Bootie Brown. The single and video were later released on the 21st of November 2005.
Gorillaz and Damon's live band: November 2005 After the Dirty Harry shoot, the band returned to Kong, tired and double booked. The band was set to perform at the MTV EMA's, while also set to perform a five-night concert at the Manchester Opera House. To fix this dilemma, the band drafted Damon and the Demon Days collaborators to perform the album live. From 1st - 5th November 2005, Damon and his live band performed the Demon Days album live at the Manchester Opera House. The band attended these gigs in the audience for the first show, before heading over to Lisbon to perform "Feel Good Inc." at the MTV EMA's.
Later that Christmas, MTV Cribs released an episode where they receive a tour of Kong Studios from Murdoc Niccals. Murdoc also delivered the Queen's speech that Christmas Day.
On the 8th of February 2006, the band headed back over to America to perform Feel Good Inc. at the Grammy's. After the award show, an after-party was held at Dennis Hopper's place, in which Murdoc got into a drunken fight with ex-Archies member, Jughead Jones, who claimed Gorillaz was a rip-off of his band.
On the 15th of February 2006, Gorillaz performed Dirty Harry at the BRIT Awards featuring a large children's choir and guest star, Bootie Brown.
Setting up for El Mañana: March 2006 Following the BRIT Awards, plans began to be made for the final Demon Days music video. Murdoc received contacts from The Demon Detour tour manager Jimmy Manson, who revelated he had been following Gorillaz for a while. He initially tried out for the guitarist role but was rejected upon Noodle's arrival, he stalked the band for some time during their time in Hollywood in 2002, and finally got a gig as the tour manager for The Demon Detour. Manson revealed that he was the one behind the shootings and he pitched an idea to kill Gorillaz and cash in on their success. Murdoc agreed to this and came up with an idea for the music video for the song El Mañana. Murdoc pitched the idea to Gorillaz and Jamie; in the video, Noodle would be on the flying windmill island from Feel Good Inc. and the island would be shot down by helicopters, however Noodle would have a parachute and the helicopters would have fake bullets. The rest of the band was a bit reluctant to this idea but ultimately gave in, especially Noodle, who wanted to take a break from Gorillaz and had already packed all her stuff up in her room. She planned to leave straight after the filming of the El Mañana video shoot. Murdoc and Jimmy hatched the plan, in which Manson would hide out inside the windmill tower with guns, and come out and shoot Noodle.
On the 7th of March 2006, Gorillaz started the shoot for El Mañana which starred Noodle on windmill island. Halfway through the video, the island was shot down and exploded as planned. However, after the video's shoot, Noodle was nowhere to be found, leaving behind a used parachute, and panic exploded on set. Manson had never come out and shot Noodle. This was because Murdoc had actually double-crossed Manson, by locking him inside the windmill, with the guns. The island crashes, with Jimmy Manson perishing along with it. In an attempt to calm fans and save face, Murdoc lied and said that Noodle had escaped by parachute and was chilling out in the Maldives. In reality, Noodle was missing and supposedly dead. Murdoc noted that the copters that shot down the island, were not the same fake copters from "Feel Good Inc." but were actually real helicopters that came and shot down the island, meaning that Noodle was being shot down with real bullets in the video and was not acting. The El Mañana single and music video were later released alongside Kids With Guns on the 10th of April 2006. Following Noodle's disappearance, Kong began falling into a state of disrepair once more, as if her presence was the only thing keeping the building alive.
Murdoc alone in Kong: October 2006 Shortly after the video's shoot, Damon and the live band once more performed a residency of five shows at New York's Harlem Apollo from 2nd April - 6th April 2006. 2-D and Murdoc attended these gigs in the audience. After the Apollo gigs, 2-D and Russel left the group, while Murdoc stayed behind by himself in the crumpling building of Kong Studios. 2-D headed off to Jamaica for a vacation, and then went to Oxford to get a degree from law school, while Russel returned to his hometown of Brooklyn. Later that year, on the 26th of October 2006, Gorillaz released their autobiography Rise Of The Ogre, and in the same day as the book's release an emergency transmission from Noodle was received in the Brain Room at the ruins of Kong Studios. Murdoc discovered that the coordinates of the transmission were being transmitted from the "depths of hell". Murdoc attempted to travel through the bowels of hell in order to bring her back but failed. Following the rescue attempt, Murdoc put Kong Studios up for sale and headed off on a bender around the world. During this time, Murdoc released another compilation album, D-Sides. Similarly to G-Sides, D-Sides consisted of bonus tracks, b-sides, and remixes of the singles from Demon Days, but consisted of significantly more material. The album was released on the 19th of November 2007 and performed similarly to G-Sides. Not long after D-Sides, director Ceri Levy was preparing on releasing a Gorillaz documentary titled "Bananaz". The documentary was about the making of Gorillaz's first two albums from the perspective of Damon and Jamie. The documentary premiered in Berlin on the 7th of February 2008. Murdoc responded to the documentary via a drunken threatening voice message to Ceri. An online war began between Murdoc and Ceri, which resulted in Ceri leaking an audio tape of Murdoc having sex with an unknown woman. Murdoc called off the war following the leak.
Phase Three: Escape To Plastic Beach (2008–2013) This phase three plot summary is adapted from music videos, animated shorts, Murdoc's Pirate Radio show, social media content, phase three interviews, the Plastic Beach adventure game, the Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour and the We Are Ten Radio Show.
The run-down Kong Studios Following his bender, Murdoc began to run low on money, so on the 25th of July 2008, Murdoc burned down the ruins of Kong Studios, cashed in on the insurance money and blamed the fire on some kids. He then attended the Monkey: Journey To The West opera as an alibi. Following the opera show, Murdoc fled the country. He also mentioned that part of the reason for the move was to flee from a deadly underground network of pirates simply referred to as 'The Black Clouds', who were out to kill him after their business deal went south. Though this isn't the first time the Black Clouds have interacted with Gorillaz. As the Black Clouds had done business with Murdoc before, which also went south. This led to the Black Clouds being the copters that actually shot down Noodle in El Mañana.
While searching the world for a new hideout, Murdoc discovered an island located in the middle of the ocean, specifically at Point NemoW, made entirely out of landfill stuck together. He sprayed the island bright pink and used the insurance money to build a new Gorillaz HQ on top, renaming the island to 'Plastic Beach'. According to the pelican at the entrance of the building in the Plastic Beach adventure game, Plastic Beach is at the farthest point from any other landmass in the world, dubbed "Point Nemo". After finding the island, he shipped a lot of the band's belongings to Plastic Beach, their new home and recording studio. While residing on the island, Murdoc began writing and putting together the concepts for the third Gorillaz studio album Plastic Beach, but he had to first reassemble his bandmates.
Murdoc said he tried to recover clues to Noodle's whereabouts from the wreckage of the windmill from "El Mañana", but the most he could obtain was a DNA sample. He later used her DNA to create a violent cyborg version of Noodle, who acts as his bodyguard. Cyborg Noodle doesn't speak, but is adept at firearms and replaces Noodle as the band's guitarist.
2-D wakes up on Plastic Beach After failing to get a degree in law, 2-D left Oxford and headed off to Beirut to live by himself. 2-D was gassed, kidnapped on his Beruit retreat, and taken to Plastic Beach in a suitcase as shown in 2-D's Plastic Beach Ident short. While the short seemingly reveals the Boogieman (the embodiment of all worldly evil who was sent by Satan to claim Murdoc's soul), as his kidnapper, 2-D believes Murdoc was the one who kidnapped him. 2-D was held at Plastic Beach against his will by Murdoc, who forces him to assist in the making of the next Gorillaz album. 2-D fell under strong depression during this stage in his life, being held captive and constantly abused by Murdoc and Cyborg Noodle, being watched by his biggest fear - a whale, missing his bandmates and being forced to withdraw from painkillers.
Russel's note Initially, little was known about the fate of Russel. Following his return to Brooklyn, Murdoc mentioned he had essentially dropped off the face of the Earth. Murdoc mentions that he used a drum machine built from all of Russel's equipment to provide percussion for his album. Finally, Russel's Plastic Beach Ident short hit the website, showing him stomping down a fishing dock in a barely suppressed rage and jumping off the end into the ocean, possibly attempting suicide as shown from a letter he left behind. Following his attempt, Russel let his body float out to sea. During this time, Russel ingested so much pollution, trash and toxic waste that he was transformed into a giant as tall as all of Plastic Beach, making a reference to Gulliver's Travels. Russel's situation reinforces the idea of human excess destroying nature already present in the album.
Murdoc and 2-D proceed to make their way to Plastic Beach via a road trip to the ocean in a 1969 Camaro SS (dubbed 'Stylo'). Murdoc and 2-D are attacked by Bruce Willis, driving a 1968 Chevrolet El Camino. Cyborg Noodle is rendered useless due to a bullet through her head, and Willis opens fire on the two, resulting in a car chase that makes up the Stylo music video. Murdoc drives them off a cliff into the ocean, and the car transforms into a shark-shaped submarine. The car chase was recorded on film by Murdoc's personal camera crew and was edited to make the music video for the Stylo single which was later released on the 26th of January 2010. A month later, on the 25th of February, the band released Superfast Jellyfish, the second single from their new record featuring De La Soul once again along with Gruff Rhys and the song White Flag with Bashy, Kano and The Syrian National Orchestra For Arabic Music two days later. The visual accompaniment for Superfast Jellyfish was released on the 8th of March 2010, but despite the song being already out it was technically only made a single on the 9th of May of the same year.
The Plastic Beach album was released on the 3rd of March 2010. The album received critical acclaim from critics. Various publications listed it as one of the best albums of 2010 and the 2010s in general. Despite the cult following, however, the album did not sell well or chart high upon its initial release.
The Boogieman moments before taking several bullets through his cape from Cyborg Noodle's rifle. In the music video for On Melancholy Hill, Noodle is revealed to be alive and in hiding. She is seen escaping a cruise ship that is under attack by the Black Clouds. Meanwhile, Murdoc, 2-D and the newly recovered Cyborg Noodle, along with all the Plastic Beach collaborators, make their way to Point Nemo together, travelling side by side in an armada of underwater vehicles. Upon arriving in a thick fog, Murdoc sights the Boogieman and orders his Cyborg bodyguard to open fire. The Boogieman escapes, leaving the fog to dissipate and reveal Plastic Beach. While drifting off in the sea, Russel finds the sea-stranded Noodle and rescues her, and together they continue on to be reunited with the rest of the band. the music video and single for On Melancholy Hill later released on the 12th of June 2010. Although initially underperforming, the song would later go on to be another one of Gorillaz' most famous tunes, behind Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc.
000whentheemptiness.jpg On the 21st of November, Gorillaz released a new single called Doncamatic featuring Daley. The music video for the single featured Daley piloting a one-man submarine through the depths of the ocean on his way to Plastic Beach.
From 3rd October to 21st December 2010, Gorillaz set off on their first world tour; "The Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour". Unfortunately, Murdoc, 2-D and Cyborg Noodle spent the entire tour locked in the dressing room while a Gorillaz "live band" took over the stage.[1][2] Murdoc suspected that, when he refused to give his soul to Satan for making Gorillaz successful, he kept the real Gorillaz out of the shows and gave the glory to the Gorillaz live band. The live band consisted of Damon Albarn and half of The Clash.[3]
During the American leg of the tour, 2-D had been working on a new collection of Gorillaz music on his iPad. He had been experimenting with new sounds and apps in various locations during the tour, including his hotel room, backstage in the dressing rooms, and in the back of the tour bus.[4] This collection of new music would become the band's fourth studio album The Fall. It was released on Christmas Day in 2010 to stream for free on the band's website, as well as a download for members of the Sub-Division fan campaign. The album was given an official release on the 18th of April 2011. The only single off the album was a double-sided single featuring the songs Revolving Doors and Amarillo.
Upon return to Plastic Beach at the end of the tour, Murdoc broadcasts the fifth episode of his "Pirate Radio" series, alerting the Black Clouds to his whereabouts once more. This leads to the island being attacked a second time.
Gorillaz reunited The storyboard film for Rhinestone Eyes reveals that the Boogieman has a grudge against Murdoc due to a deal they made and that the Boogieman is the fifth rejected Horseman of Apocalypse, named "Flatulence". In the video, we see the Boogieman summon the Gorillaz "live band" who are revealed to have been part of the Black Clouds the whole time.
More Black Clouds raid Plastic Beach in planes similar to the ones that attacked Noodle, in an attempt at Murdoc's life. The album's collaborators, along with Cyborg Noodle, arm themselves with guns and retaliate, while Murdoc hides for fear of his own safety. 2-D, who is deathly afraid of whales, is frightened senseless when a whale nearly rams the underside of the island during the battle. However, just as it closes its jaws around the underwater window of 2-D's room, Russel appears and hurls the whale into an enemy plane, destroying it. Russel then leans onto the Beach and opens his mouth, revealing the real Noodle. Noodle then takes off her mask, revealing scars around her eye. After the events of the video, all four band members evacuated the island immediately.
It was later revealed that Murdoc hired an imposter known as The Imposter Murdoc to take his place on the island while he made his escape in an attempt to trick the Boogieman into collecting the wrong soul. Once the Boogieman had collected the soul of the Imposter Murdoc, the debt was fulfilled and the grudge between the two was set aside.[5]
Original/Retconned Ending
While escaping from Plastic Beach, Murdoc was caught up in a typhoon and eventually landed in Hawaii. There, he began to record a radio show to celebrate Gorillaz' Ten Year anniversary, the We Are Ten Radio Show. It later revealed that he wasn't in Hawaii at all, but was instead in a ransacked house at 212 Wobble Street, London, where the other three members managed to reach him.
Notice of Eviction. In early 2012, the four remaining band members were seen living at 212 Wobble Street, London (as seen in the DoYaThing music video). 2-D is seen checking on Noodle as she sleeps. Most of her facial injuries appear to have healed. The Boogieman was also revealed to still be alive and lived with the band, reading a newspaper. Russel is later seen sleeping on the roof of the row house as 2-D receives a letter stating that the band was being evicted from the residence. The floating windmill island can be seen in a state of disrepair and anchored to the roof of the building. This was later deemed non-canon by Jamie Hewlett,[6] with phase four beginning directly after the events of the Rhinestone Eyes video with events contradicting what had originally been established in 2011's tenth-anniversary radio special and 2012’s DoYaThing music video.
(This ending was scrapped due to the break made for Monkey: Journey To The West taking up time and making the lore illogical)
Phase Four: We Are Still Humanz (2013–2018)
The Gorillaz in Phase 4. This phase four plot summary is adapted from social media posts, music videos, phase four interviews, the phase four Mixed Reality app, The Book Of Gorillaz, Demon Dayz Festival Margate, the Humanz Tour, the G Magazine and interviews on the unofficial biography, Dawn Of The Ogre.
During the attack of Plastic Beach, Murdoc escaped the island with Cyborg Noodle in a submarine. On his way home to England, Murdoc was captured by EMI, the now-defunct former publisher of Gorillaz' music. EMI had been searching the globe for Murdoc, who they threw in "Dungeon Abbey", a secret prison beneath Abbey Road Studios. Murdoc was eventually released under the condition that he was to immediately begin work on a new Gorillaz album. Murdoc agreed and moved into a new studio/home in West London.[7]
Shortly after the attack on Plastic Beach, Noodle awoke in a small Japanese village and began working as a pearl diver under the apprenticeship of Chiyoko, the woman who had nursed her back to health after finding her washed up on the Japanese shore. While working one day, Noodle accidentally released Mazuu, a shape-shifting devil that had spent over 500 years trapped in a large pearl at the bottom of the ocean. Noodle spent years chasing Mazuu, finding it in Tokyo disguised as a human, having risen to the criminal underworld. Noodle infiltrated Mazuu's headquarters, decapitated Mazuu, and escaped in one piece. She packaged herself in a FedEx crate and addressed it to "West London, England, c/o Murdoc Niccals".[8]
While escaping Plastic Beach with Noodle, Russell had gotten separated off the coast of Japan. Being mistaken for a whale (due to his unusually large size) he was harpooned but managed to escape. He lost consciousness and washed up on the shores of North Korea, where he was carried to Pyongyang and exhibited as "Pulgasari", North Korea's "Godzilla". Russell became the country's most popular attraction before shrinking back to normal size due to malnutrition, after which he was sent back to London where he moved into Murdoc's home in West London to create a new Gorillaz album.[9]
During the attack on Plastic Beach, 2-D was swallowed whole by "Massive Dick", the whale that terrified him throughout his time spent on the island. Shortly after, Massive Dick died and washed up on the shore of a desert island. 2-D emerged from the whale's carcass and spent months surviving solely off of Massive Dick's dead body, before realizing he was actually on Guadalupe Island off the coast of Mexico. He walked thirty minutes before finding a beach resort and spent the rest of the year there on vacation before finally heading home to England where he was picked up by a driver Murdoc hired and was reunited with the band.[10]
The band recorded throughout 2016 at Studio 13, Murdoc’s secret new studio in London, finally completing their first album in 7 years, Humanz, in 2017. On the 19th of January 2017, the band released their first song after their five-year hiatus: Hallelujah Money, featuring Benjamin Clementine, along with its own music video. Murdoc decided to release the album by throwing “the party to end all parties” in a haunted house in Detroit known as the “Spirit House”. [11] When the band first arrived at the house in the Saturnz Barz music video, they were haunted by three demons. A giant one-eyed blue worm haunted Noodle, a grey multi-limbed monster haunted Russel and a pizza slice with a face haunted 2-D. In the Strobelite music video, Noodle and 2-D have fun dancing at the party, while Russel sleeps and Murdoc does shady business with a mysterious man at the bar.
In June 2017 a song and a music video named Sleeping Powder was discovered in 2-D's room in the Gorillaz app. Later the same day, the video was released to the public, and one week later, the song was officially released as a single on digital platforms. 2-D recorded the song and music video himself as a response to fans who criticized Humanz for having too many collaborators and not enough of 2-D's voice. 2-D was able to record the track and video in secret due to Murdoc being placed into a week-long coma.
The band went on a world tour, and even created their own festival called the Demon Dayz Festival. The first of which took place in Margate, England in June 2017. Before Gorillaz took the stage at Demon Dayz, a mysterious cult called the “Kool Klown Klan” were spotted holding bells and marching. Little is known about the cult, but they are referenced in the lyrics and imagery of the Humanz song Momentz.
While nearing the end of the Humanz promotion cycle one, the band made one last last push to promote their final Phase 4 release, the Humanz Super Deluxe Box Set, a vinyl box set containing an exclusive artbook and un-released songs and b-sides from the Humanz sessions, released on the 3rd of November with an accompanying single, Garage Palace, and its own visualiser.
“ The way we went about this left a lot of holes in people’s pockets, but a wise yet pathetic man once said “Being a Gorillaz fan don’t come cheap”. (...) I know a lot of people can’t afford this sort of stuff, but the internet does exist so I’m not sorry. „ ~ 2-D, Dawn Of The Ogre  In December 2017, the band released their own Magazine, titled G Magazine. The 34-page magazine features insights from the band on Humanz, editorials from each Gorillaz member, and an interview between the band members and Jamie Hewlett. In February 2018 the band won the BRIT Award for Best British Band. While attempting to accept his award, Murdoc was arrested and taken to HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs in London for an at the time undisclosed crime.
Phase Five: No More Unicorns Anymore (2018–2019)
The Gorillaz in Phase 5. This phase five plot summary is adapted from the Free Murdoc campaight, music videos, social media content, phase five interviews, Demon Dayz Festival LA, The Now Now Tour and interviews on the unofficial biography, Dawn Of The Ogre.
Hot off the heels of their big return album with Humanz in 2017, the band decided to continue their momentum and release a follow-up album in 2018. The band hired Ace of The Powerpuff Girls fame while still on the Humanz Tour to temporarily replace Murdoc as bassist while he was serving time in prison, and released their sixth studio album, The Now Now.
In the music video for The Now Now's lead single Humility, Russell, Noodle and Ace enjoy their day on the Venice Boardwalk in Los Angeles while the uncharacteristically happy 2-D roller-skates around the boardwalk, enjoying his new life without Murdoc constantly abusing him. At the end of the video, Russell trips 2-D, whose eyes turn from white to black. After which, he loses his ability to roller-skate and immediately falls a second time.
While the band embarked on their 2018 tour supporting The Now Now, Murdoc began planning his escape from prison. Murdoc claimed that the man he met at the bar in the Strobelite music video was a demon crime lord named 'El Mierda', who framed him for smuggling. Murdoc decided to escape the prison and track down El Mierda, but he couldn't bribe his way out since Noodle had frozen his bank account, believing him to be guilty of smuggling. He decided that picking a fight with 'Big Balls McGuinness' (one of the toughest prisoners in Wormwood Scrubs) would give him the respect he needed to get inside info on El Mierda from other prisoners. After losing the fight to McGuinness, he set his sights on 'Vlad the Inhaler', an associate of El Mierda. Murdoc recruited a fan to catfish Vlad, getting close enough to him to find the whereabouts of El Mierda. Astonishingly, this worked, and Murdoc now had coordinates to what he believed to be the crime lord's hideout in Patagonia.
Noodle's selfie, reporting that she's alive. Murdoc finally enlisted the help of Noodle, who had been ignoring his countless calls. She only agreed to help after realizing the demon El Mierda is a soul harvester and may have taken 2-D’s soul, noting he hasn't been acting like himself for months. Convinced Murdoc knows about this, she refuses to do it for his sake but instead 2-D's. Noodle set a course for Patagonia to take on El Mierda herself. A week later, Noodle reported that she was safe - still embarking on her trip to El Mierda's hideout, being shown the way by some Andean mountain cats after getting "kinda lost". However, due to complications, Murdoc decided to escape once and for singlehandedly through the sewers. In a turn for the worst, he was assumed to have drowned in sewage while trying to escape. Meanwhile, the rest of the band was enjoying the success of The Now Now, releasing a music video for the single Tranz.
Two weeks later, Noodle arrived at the coordinates Murdoc had discovered, but instead of a secret hideout, the coordinates led to a health spa. She met El Mierda, who had given up his life of crime years prior, converting his evil lair into the El Montaña Wellness Centre. Notably, she discovered that El Mierda was not the man Murdoc met in the 'Strobelite' video, but was, in fact, an immortal old man who had never even heard of Murdoc. Noodle researched the details of Murdoc’s incarceration to discover that he was not sent to prison for smuggling but rather for simple parking fines. He was only meant to serve nine months and would have been released the same day he supposedly drowned during his escape. Noodle discovered that Murdoc had greatly fabricated the nature of his imprisonment, blaming his crime on the man from the Strobelite video, who turned out to just be an innocent leather salesman named Juan.
Moments later, a yak arrived at the El Montaña Wellness Centre. Noodle went to investigate to find Murdoc tied to the top of the yak. It turned out that Murdoc was simply acting out for attention, making up an imprisonment story that he described as “mostly bollocks”. But as his story grew more outlandish he felt a need to continue keeping up appearances, resulting in an unnecessary prison escape that nearly had him killed. The only clue as to why he survived has been a mysterious person or thing he saw while in the sewer, which he later sketched out. His near-death experience gave him the epiphany that headlines weren't worth lying about and putting Noodle in unnecessary danger. He decided to meet Noodle at El Mierda’s hideout, tying himself to a yak he named Madge after Madonna. Murdoc was even prepared to sacrifice himself to save her if need be, luckily this was unnecessary and when he arrived, the two simply spent a few days at the health spa while Murdoc apologized for his actions. After learning the true nature of El Mierda, the two discerned that 2-D’s difference in character was simply him enjoying his new-found confidence without Murdoc around abusing him, or as Murdoc put it, “just missing me”. When Noodle and Murdoc returned to the band, Murdoc vowed to be a better man and joined them on the final leg of The Now Now Tour.
Towards the end of 2018, the band teamed up with Casio to produce a line of Gorillaz G-Shock watches. The band released a promotional web series to advertise the line of watches. The series, titled “Mission M101” follows the band on an intergalactic adventure, teaming up with G-Shock founder Kikuo Ibe to release their line of watches across the galaxy. On October 20th, the band performed at the Día de los Muertos themed Demon Dayz Festival 2018 in Los Angeles. Four days later, the band played their final show of The Now Now Tour in Mexico City, Mexico.
Phase Six: Wish You Wear Ear (2019–2021)
The Gorillaz in Phase 6. This phase six plot summary is adapted from social media, music videos, Machine Bitez, Get Lost with Gorillaz, Gorillaz x Fred Perry, and phase six interviews.
During a brief hiatus for the band, on the 3rd of September 2019 while visiting Iran to see Lake Urmia, Noodle made note of how climate change had taken a toll on the lake. She came to a realization regarding the fleeting state of nature on Earth and sent a postcard to Murdoc, 2-D, and Russel at Studio 13 with a message detailing her desire to build a machine and see the world before it’s gone. The postcard arrived at Studio 13 on the 12th of September.[12]
On the 7th of September, 2-D sent a postcard to the band while visiting Beirut, informing Noodle that he had gotten the parts for the machine she had mentioned, asking what they were for. The postcard arrived at Studio 13 on the 24th of September.[13]
On the 14th of September, Murdoc sent a postcard from his annual drunken holiday in Ibiza. The postcard arrived at Studio 13 on the 26th of September.[14]
Wishyouwearear.jpg On the 21st of September, Russel sent a post-card from Mexico while working on his hot sauce business, "Hobbs Hot Sauce". He included a message telling the band that he’d “be seeing [them] and the machine REAL soon”. The postcard arrived at Studio 13 on the 4th of October.[15]
The machine (revealed as the "Song Machine") was activated on the 28th of January.[16] The following day, the band announced their next project, Song Machine, a multimedia series of songs/music videos released episodically through 2020, as a continuously-updating playlist via streaming services.
In a statement to the press, Russell said "Song Machine is a whole new way of doing what we do. Gorillaz breaking the mould ‘cos the mould got old. World is moving faster than a supercharged particle, so we’ve gotta stay ready to drop. We don’t even know who’s stepping through the studio next. Song Machine feeds on the unknown, runs on pure chaos. So whatever the hell’s coming, we’re primed and ready to produce like there’s no tomorrow. Y’know, just in case.”[17]
The band's new Kong Studios as it appears in the Désolé music video. Throughout the course of the series, the band collaborates with musicians they’ve met on their various trips around the world, inviting them to record at their now-renamed West London studio, officially dubbed the new Kong Studios.[18] In the music video for Désolé, 2-D, Noodle, and Russel travel to Lake Como via a mysterious teleporting door in Kong Studios and record with Fatoumata Diawara. Murdoc is left behind and unable to reopen the portal, leaving him lonely and depressed in Kong. When questioned about this, Murdoc claimed he wasn’t upset about being left behind and didn’t care about their trip to Italy. Shortly before enviously asking 2-D and Russel about portals just “in case [he] ever [needs] to find one for future reference”.
In the face of a global pandemic, the band practised social distancing, sequestering themselves in various parts of Kong Studios.[19] Murdoc locked himself in Kong’s basement, explaining how he was working on “something big” that would “change the effing world”. After a look through his online purchase history, this “something big” appears to have involved nearly £500 worth of pine wood and a blow-up doll.[20] Meanwhile, Russel caught up on television while experimenting with an assorted variety of food/entertainment combinations.[21]
As the months passed, Murdoc continued providing social media updates regarding his secret project, before finally unveiling it in the music video for PAC-MAN.[22][23] This special project, his very own orgone accumulator (based on the pseudoscientific concept of Wilhelm Reich), was built solely by Murdoc in the basement of Kong Studios. Throughout the video, Murdoc can be seen contentedly sitting and relaxing in his creation, which is an act of jealousy and defiance, he claims can also act as his own private teleportation portal despite not showing any interest or the apparent ability to open a portal of any kind.
In the Strange Timez music video, the band took a trip through space to destroy a billboard on the moon. In the music video for The Valley Of The Pagans the band travelled through a portal to Los Angeles for a drive around the city before abruptly falling through another portal leading them to Plastic Beach.
2-D rescues Murdoc In the musix video for The Lost Chord, the band found themselves back at Plastic Beach ten years after the Black Clouds’ attack on the island. Past trauma resurfaced as they explored the remains of the island. Murdoc is seen overcome with guilt at the sight of a damaged and deactivated Cyborg Noodle. Soon after, a sea monster awoke from the depths of the ocean and began destroying the island. The deactivated Cyborg Noodle is seen opening her eye as she lifelessly sinks to the bottom of the ocean. A portal back to Kong suddenly opened up as the ruins of the island sunk into the ocean. 2-D, Noodle, and Russel escaped as the portal closed, leaving Murdoc stranded in the ocean. In the spirit of friendship and forgiveness, 2-D quickly reopened the portal and reached out, saving Murdoc’s life.
The eviction note received by the band In May of 2021, a demonic sinkhole opened beneath the West London Kong Studios, leaving it inoperable and under renovation. During this time, the band went on a road trip in Murdoc's Winnebago, taking their instruments and recording equipment along with them.[24] The band released a surprise EP titled Meanwhile in August of 2021. The EP was released as a "homage to Notting Hill Carnival", an annual event that usually takes place in London every August, but couldn't occur in 2020 or 2021 due to the global pandemic. The EP features frequent Notting Hill Carnival performers Jelani Blackman, Barrington Levy, AJ Tracey, and Alicai Harley.[25]
In December 2021, the band was contacted by a rogue agent of the Department of Musical Corrections, "a covert organisation operating in the murky shadows of the music industry" with the goal to "stifle originality" in the world of pop music. The DMC agent, known only as GFlat, revealed on social media that Gorillaz had been on the top of the organization's "most subversive" watchlist for decades. GFlat claimed that "a storm [was] coming", and began leaking classified DMC documents to the public through the Gorillaz discord. This culminated in the release of the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Boxset, which included the the exclusive LPs Live At The Forum, 2001 and Demoz, a collection of early Gorillaz demos that had previously been locked away in the DMC vaults, and.
Phase Seven: The Static Channel (2022–Present)
Gorillaz in June 2022 This phase seven plot summary is adapted from music videos, social media posts, the Stuart Potcast, The Last Cult mailing list, the official Gorillaz Discord server, the phase seven website and phase seven interviews.
During July 2022, the band announced that they had begun recording their next album at the Silver Lake Mansiom in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, while the London Sewage Department continued Kong’s restoration. During this time Murdoc became increasingly interested in the occult, and eventually founded a cult focusing on the supernatural, dubbed The Last Cult. The rest of the band weren’t too keen but didn’t think much of it.[26]
2-D was given the role of 'The Chosen One', and started a podcast as a way to journal the first days of The Last Cult.[27] Over time, 2-D talked about various tasks he’d been assigned including digging holes, painting Murdoc’s giant obelisk, finding books for Noodle, as well as the activities of the neighbours, mostly for the “main lady” next door, who seemed to fancy 2-D, and Murdoc became attracted to. It was also implied that Murdoc may have started the cult simply in an attempt to impress her.
The Static Channel (as seen on the interactive Gorillaz website) broadcasting footage of Los Angeles in 1923. Around this time, the band began receiving strange broadcast television transmissions. The role of 'Seeker of Truth' was given to Russel, and he was tasked with watching these transmissions and solving the mystery behind them. Russel discovered that all of the transmissions dated back to the years 1923, 1948, 1973, and 1998, following a 25 year pattern. Among these transmissions was a news broadcast from the near future in the following year 2023, in which the band is taken to LA County Hospital and questioned by LAPD officers after a cult gathering caused a supernatural event to occur under the Hollywood sign (as seen in the music video for Cracker Island). Unaware of the events leading to this future, the band watched the transmission. The supernatural event from this transmission would later be dubbed by Russel as 'The Rupture'.
While watching 2-D paint The Last Cult's giant obelisk for 'The Great Leader' Murdoc, Noodle - 'The Scholar' - began to question if "this cult thing might already be going a bit sideways". Russel seemed happy with the obelisk, as it only improved the reception of the mysterious transmissions. Murdoc had hoped the obelisk would impress his crush next door, but as it turned out, the woman next door was actually 'Moon Flower', the high priestess of 'The Forever Cult', and was unimpressed with Murdoc and The Last Cult. Murdoc's jealousy grew as Moon Flower continued to take a liking to 2-D. Meanwhile, Russel was going mad trying to solve the mystery of the transmissions and the Rupture.
After piecing together several clues from the Static Channel, Russel was convinced that the Rupture would occur on New Year’s Eve 2023 at midnight, causing an inter-dimensional portal to open under the Hollywood sign. However, nothing happened that night as Russel stood by the sign, alone in the rain for hours. He continued watching the Static Channel for clues, slowly slipping into a dazed state of hypnosis.
Forever and Ever Pictures’ studio in the 1920s. 2-D continued to spend time with Moon Flower next door, and was eventually recruited to the Forever Cult after drinking a mysterious tea made from the Forever Cult’s garden. Through her concern for Russel and 2-D’s safety, Noodle began piecing together clues of her own, uncovering a strange connection between Moon Flower and Lady Hollodown, an actress and movie producer from the 1920s. She came to the conclusion that the Forever Cult has been around since as early as the beginning of the 20th century, masquerading as a movie studio called "Forever and Ever Pictures" that was partially owned by Lady Hollodown.
When she arrived next door to confront the Forever Cult, Noodle was met with an entirely empty compound. The only piece of evidence was a clipping from the Forever Cult’s doctrine, focusing on a ritual that occurs once every 25 years. It seemed that despite Murdoc’s insistence that Moon Flower was interested in 2-D romantically, she was actually using him as the sacrificial lamb for this occult ceremony.
Clipping from the Forever Cult’s doctrine. The rest of the band tracked 2-D and the Forever Cult to their old movie studio under the Hollywood Sign in time to interrupt the ceremony (as seen in the music video for Silent Running). Suspended by rope, 2-D was slowly lowered into a pit to be eaten by a monster and continue the Forever Cult’s cycle. After having a change of heart, Moon Flower attempted to rescue 2-D while the rest of the band fought off the Forever Cult members. When Murdoc accidentally dropped his “signature fragrance” perfume into the pit, it was consumed by the monster causing it to explode and cause the Rupture. The members of the Forever Cult turned to ash as the cycle was broken, with Moon Flower falling to the floor, seemingly dead.
Murdoc fled the crime scene while the Los Angeles Police Department arrived, and as they had previously seen on the Static Channel, the rest of the band were arrested and brought to Los Angeles County Hospital. 2-D and Noodle were questioned by officers while Russel continued to watch the Static Channel before finally snapping out of it. Murdoc arrived as the recently deceased Moon Flower rose from a gurney to meet Murdoc, and started to age rapidly. The two kissed as the police, doctors, and patients watched in disbelief.
2-D with Moon Flower’s ashes. Despite surviving the Rupture, Moon Flower was only given a few more days to live before turning to ash as well. She suspected these days were given to her as a reward for her part in 2-D’s rescue, revealing to Murdoc that she found 2-D to be too pure to sacrifice, and she had been leaving clues for the band to stop the ritual the whole time. Moon Flower spent her last days dating Murdoc, comforted by his continued romantic pursuit despite knowing her true nature. She turned to ash after spending a night with Murdoc watching her old film “The Hills Are Hungry”, keeping her ashes in an urn to remember her.

Phase One: Celebrity Take Down (1997–2002)
The story of Gorillaz begins on August 15th, 1997. Stu-Pot was a mentally deficient keyboard enthusiast and part-time employee at Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium.
In September of 1997, Murdoc acquired the property of Kong Studios, a sprawling haunted studio with a rather shady history, situated atop a hill in the midst of a run-down cemetery and landfill in Districtshire, Essex.
Murdoc then found a drummer for the group in a Soho record store: African-American expatriate Russel Hobbs.
This was a short-lived respite, however, as all of Russel's newfound friends were suddenly gunned-down one night in a drive-by shooting. Russel, the sole survivor, became the unwilling receptacle for the spirits of all of his slain compatriots, most notable of whom was the rhyme dropping blue phantom, Del. With their latent possession of his body, Russel gained incredible musical prowess in percussion, rap, and hip-hop as well as a disturbing side-effect: his eyes glowed an eerie white. With this new and violent turn of events, Russel's family shipped him off to England in hopes of helping him recover from his traumas quietly - not realizing they'd put him directly into the path of Murdoc's aspirations to superstardom, and the excesses that came along with it.
Russel met Murdoc in a Soho record store called, "Big Rick Black's Record Shack". When Murdoc asked for an obscure 50s record, he slipped a bag over Russel's head and took him to Kong Studios. Russel was impressed by the music Murdoc and 2D made and he chose to stay there.
At that point, all the fledgling group needed was a guitarist. Their first guitarist was 2-D's girlfriend, Paula Cracker, but she was shortly fired from the band after Russel caught her and Murdoc making love in the studio toilets. Disgusted by this, Russel broke Murdoc's nose five times (though Murdoc's nose was broken previous times before this). Like so many British bands before them, the trio placed an advertisement in NME. The very day the ad ran, a FedEx freight container from Japan was delivered to their doorstep and out jumped a mysterious amnesiac 7-year-old wielding a Gibson Les Paul. The tiny girl made an incomprehensible introduction in Japanese and tore into a "riff to end all riffs" which ended with an impressive karate kick to the air. She then bowed, and spoke a single word in English to the stunned boys, which became her moniker: "Noodle". After the band was finally assembled, they changed their name to Gorillaz. Their first song was called "Ghost Train" and was recorded at Kong Studios. Murdoc posted a copy of the song, some photos of the band and a manifesto over to Mr. Whiffy Smithy at EMI.
On November 5th, 1998, Gorillaz played their first show at the Camden Brownhouse which ended prematurely due to a riot during their song "Punk". EMI A&R man Whiffy Smiffy discharged several rounds from a shotgun to disperse the crowd enough to make his way to the stage and quickly signed them to the label. The following evening, Gorillaz attended their record label signing party. The band was gifted a seven foot cheque, and also met a long time collaborator, Damon Albarn. Damon would go on to be a influential part of the band, serving as a vocal coach for 2-D. However, Murdoc was and still is very jealous of Damon and frequently attempts to poison him and steal his demos.
In December 1998, the band began recording sessions for their debut album, spending the entirety of 1999 recording at Kong. After a years worth of recordings, the band felt as though there was something missing from the album. The skeleton had been made, but it still needed flesh. the band decided to draft in Dan The Automator as producer to help provide extras. Dan's first move as producer was to move the album recordings over to the sun kissed beaches of Jamaica. from April to May 2000, the band recorded the final tracks in Jamaica, before production on the album finally finished in June 2000.
Upon returning to Kong after the completion of the album, the band began making plans for their first music video. The band initially sourced Italian director Paulo Skinbacio to direct the music video for the track "Tomorrow Comes Today". The truth is, however, Skinbacio had never been on a film shoot in his life. The music video for the track premiered in a garbage bin outside the music label office. The band decided to fire Skinbacio, which led to him threating the band in German. Now in need of another director, Damon Albarn suggested his old troublemaker flatmate Jamie Hewlett. Jamie was brought to Kong, and agreed to direct the video. He would later become a huge influential part in Gorillaz, going on to direct and assist the band's entire videography.
Gorillaz made their public debut with the "Tomorrow Comes Today" EP and Tomorrow Comes Today music video on November 27th 2000.
On March 5th 2001, Gorillaz released their debut single, "Clint Eastwood". The song and its accompanying video would go on to give Gorillaz the push towards mainstream popularity.
On March 22nd 2001, Gorillaz performed their second ever gig at the London Scala. The gig was televised live on MTV, and was available for rewatch on the band's website.
On March 26th 2001, Gorillaz' self titled debut album, released to the public. The album was a huge success, charting No.3 on the UK albums chart, and No.14 on the US Billboard 200, going on to sell 7 million copies worldwide. Everyone was celebrating the release of the album, except for Murdoc, who's prized Winnebago was stolen the same day as the album's release. Someone over at EMI, had given away the Winnebago keys along with a copy of the album. The person in question who got ahold of the keys, was a man named Dr. Wurzel. Who started a GeoCities page where he would post photos of his many adventures with Murdoc's mobile home. An online craze began on the Gorillaz website, with Murdoc initiating a competition for fans to find his Winnebago. During this time, Dr. Wurzel leaked Gorillaz first track, Ghost Train, and a picture of the band when Paula was still guitarist. At some point in late 2001, Murdoc (or the authorities) apprehended the crazed doctor and returned the Winnebago to its rightful home in the Kong Studios Carpark.
In Spring 2001, the band began recording a music video for the track "5/4", but this was later scrapped in favor of a music video for the track "19-2000", which later released on June 25th 2001.
In Summer 2001, Gorillaz decided to tour Japan. This lead, however, to Noodle beginning to have melancholic feelings and thoughts, not knowing about her past and feeling isolated from her homeland. Also during this time is when Noodle began to suffer from nightmares regarding her forgotten past. Russel decided to buy her a jetpack to cheer her up. During the Japan tour, Gorillaz noted that their popularity there wasn't as big as it was in other parts of the world. To attempt to boost album sales and popularity Gorillaz came up with G-Sides, a compilation album that consisted of bonus tracks, b-sides, and remixes from the band's singles off their debut album. This had the desired effect, as G-Sides released later that December, and went on to sell half a million copies worldwide.
On September 11th 2001, due to the collapse of the twin towers, and closed airports, rap group D12 were left stranded in London. Gorillaz allowed the group to stay at Kong Studios for the time being, during this time the track "911" was born, which served as a response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The track would later feature contributions from Specials frontman, Terry Hall. The song was released as a downloadable single later that winter on both Gorillaz and D12's websites.
In Fall 2001, the band embarked on a tour of Europe. Not long after the tour, the band released their 3rd single and final music video of their debut album, "Rock The House".
In Christmas 2001, Gorillaz released a series of little shorts known as G-Bites which allowed fans to gain an insight on to how Gorillaz live off screen. Murdoc hosted an end of the year party at Kong Studios, which lasted from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day.
On February 20th, 2002, Gorillaz performed at the Brit Awards where they were nominated for 6 Brit Awards but won nothing.
From February 23rd, 2002 - March 11th, 2002, Gorillaz embarked on an 11-month tour of North America. The tour was met with issues from the beginning, as Murdoc was arrested as soon as the band arrived in America, due to an incident in Nebraska 15 years ago. Murdoc made it on stage just in time after paying for the $500,000 bail. During this tour, Noodle began suffering from nightmares again, which led to her losing much sleep. The band passed this off as a feeling of road fatigue and touring at a young age.
On February 25th 2002, the band released the final single of their debut album, which was a single re-release of "Tomorrow Comes Today", with two new B-side tracks instead of the previous ones.
The tour was going pretty well for a while, until the disastrous show in Mexico on March 11th 2002. 2-D had eaten a spicy Mexican burrito the night before, and had diarrhea, Murdoc whacked a fan on the head with his bass, Russel had a heart attack mid show and needed vitamin injections, Noodle was on a trigger due to no sleep, one of Siegfried & Roy's tigers got drunk and stole a motorcycle, and to top it all off, a giant inflatable gorilla head crushed several kids, who had to wait 48 hours before they could be set free.
After the end of the tour, Gorillaz took a six-month break in L.A on March 13th. There they attempted to get a movie project off the ground. The band played their last gig together at the Isle of MTV Festival in Portugal on July 20th. At the end of the gig, a fan asked Murdoc to sign a CD for him, the CD in question being a release from a group associated with Gorillaz that he didn't even know of: these were the Spacemonkeyz- three chimps, who were tested lab monkeys that were sent up to space. Upon arriving back to Earth, the chimps stumbled upon Kong Studios, after 2-D had accidentally left the studio front doors open before the band left for the tour, which allowed the Spacemonkeyz to break in, and steal the master tapes for the band's album. The Spacemonkeyz created the remix album "Laika Come Home" which released on July 1st 2002.
Alas, the film was not meant to be, due in part to extensive over-partying, in-fighting, and disagreements with producers, directors, and a notable incident of Murdoc getting himself banned from the Playboy Mansion for stealing ashtrays. Gorillaz tried to create a movie, but everyone was too concentrated on doing drugs and hanging out with celebrities. Murdoc almost got a TV show, but they replaced him at the last minute. During the film's production, the band worked with director Alfred C. Klinker, who kept changing the film's script everyday, this led to the band eventually firing Klinker, and deciding to check into a Hollywood motel to write the film themselves in August 2002. However, this did not work, as constant fights broke out between the band members, and sense of distrust was grown between everybody. It all came to a head, when one fight led to Murdoc attempting to strangle 2-D to death. Russel and Noodle broke up the fight, but Murdoc finally sick of it all, walked out of the motel, and ended Gorillaz there and then.

THE WILD BLUE YONDER!
Lucy & Aviation
Tumblr media
Thanks to Orville and Wilbur Wright, the world became a smaller place and travel by air become as commonplace as train or car travel. Lucille Ball and her many characters had lots of reasons to take to the ‘friendly skies’ - here are just a few.
Orville and Wilbur Wright were inventors and pioneers of aviation. In 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first powered, sustained and controlled airplane flight; they surpassed their own milestone two years later when they built and flew the first fully practical airplane. The Wrights were mentioned several times in the Lucyverse:
Tumblr media
Olin Howland (Mr. Skinner in “First Stop” 1955) ~ As a young man he learned flying from the Wright Brothers.
“Speech for a Civic Organization” (1949) ~ Liz intends to speak about the Wright Brothers, despite her favorite husband’s objections.
“The Good Years” (1962) ~ Orville and Wilbur were mentioned in the special starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
“Swing Out Sweet Land” (1970) ~ Rowan and Martin played the Wright Brothers and Lucy voiced the Statue of Liberty in John Wayne’s TV special celebrating American history.
Tumblr media
As a busy radio, film and television star, Lucille Ball was constantly photographed boarding and disembarking from aircraft.
Tumblr media
1930′s ~ Young model Lucille Ball holds a model airplane for a photo shoot.
Tumblr media
May 1938 ~ Publicists created fascinating and completely untrue backgrounds for Hollywood stars. In this article, Monroe Lathrop claims that Lucille Ball was a skilled aviatrix who shot crocodiles while flying over a jungle river.
“On a visit to Colombia, Lucille, avid for new adventure, went with friends Into the jungle, meeting a flood that had swollen the streams and overrun the banks with huge crocodiles. Instead of heeding the natives' warning, Lucille went to wireless station, ordered an airplane and rifles, and spent a day pumping lead into the big green saurians. Natives rewarded her with a generous helping of crocodile steak later.”
Tumblr media
Five Came Back (1939) ~ Nine passengers from all walks of life and a crew of three take off from Los Angeles, bound for Panama City, but a sudden storm blows them off course and causes the plane to crash in the Amazon jungle. Lucille Ball played passenger Peggy Nolan. The B film helped Ball launch an A list career.
Tumblr media
1940s ~ Lucille Ball posing in a biplane cockpit.
Tumblr media
June 1943 - Newspapers reported that Jimmy Cagney had christened a B-17 bomber named The Lucille Ball. After it was scrapped due to battle damage, a second bomber was christened The Lucille Ball in 1944.
Tumblr media
A Woman of Distinction (1950) ~ Lucille Ball appears in a cameo as herself, a jet-setting film star, in this Rosalind Russell / Ray Milland film.
Tumblr media
“Return Home From Europe” (1956) ~ To get back to New York in time to play the Roxy, the Ricardos and Mertzes fly home from Europe, rather than go by ship. Unable to whittle down her luggage allowance, Lucy is intent on smuggling a cheese aboard, disguising it as a baby.
Tumblr media
There are establishing shots of Pan American World Airways (PAA) President Clipper Service. The Clipper in the insert shot is named Bald Eagle. There are two insert shots of Pan Am aircraft: one taking off, and one in mid-flight. The DC-7C (nicknamed “seven seas”) first entered service for Pan Am in December 1955 and was dubbed “the zenith of piston-engine technology.” Pan Am had 27 DC-7Cs flying during 1956. By 1958, jet travel began to overtake propeller airplanes.
Tumblr media
The interior of the aircraft was recreated on the Desilu soundstage. The PAA logo is visible on blankets and tote bags, items provided by Pan Am for the use of their name and images of their aircraft as well as possible other promotional consideration.
Tumblr media
“The Ricardos Visit Cuba” (1956) ~ While in Miami, the gang flies to Havana to visit Ricky’s family.
Tumblr media
The gang once again flies Pan American Airways, the same carrier they took home from Europe.  The airline folded in 1991.
Tumblr media
As with their previous flight, there is an establishing shot of the plane in the air and the interior was recreated on the Desilu soundstage. The set is basically the same one used in “Return Home from Europe”.  It also features PAA branded promotional items.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes To Alaska” (1959) ~ The Ricardos and Merztes fly to the brand new state of Alaska, where Ricky and Fred have bought some land and Ricky is doing a TV show with Red Skelton.  Although the action is set in and around Nome, the second unit footage was filmed in Lake Arrowhead, California, about 100 miles from Hollywood. The exteriors were done with doubles and none of the regular cast left their newly-purchased Desilu (formerly RKO) Studio.
Tumblr media
To get from Westport CT to Nome AK, the gang first flies United Airlines, then transfers to Alaska Airlines. There is establishing footage of both planes in mid-flight.
Tumblr media
The set features a couple of travel posters for Alaska Airlines, enticing viewers to visit the 49th state for tourism. In the second half of the hour, a small propeller plane is introduced to rescue Red and Lucy from a blizzard.
Tumblr media
RED: “What’s that blue stuff?” ESKIMO PILOT: “Sky.” LUCY (To Red): “You act as though you’ve never seen sky before.” RED: “I haven’t. I live in Los Angeles.”
Tumblr media
The plane is buried in a snowbank. Lucy pays an eskimo pilot $100 to fly her and Red to safety.
Tumblr media
While the plane in the snowbank was filmed in the Hollywood studio, the safe landing was done at Lake Arrowhead using actor doubles.
Tumblr media
“The Ricardos Go To Japan” (1959) ~ The final time we see the gang airborne is on a trip to Japan. Although there is a poster for Japan Airlines (JAL)  in the airport...
Tumblr media
According to the establishing footage of the jet in mid-air, the foursome travels  on United Airlines.
Tumblr media
The Facts of Life (1960) ~ The film about two marrieds flirting with infidelity has Kitty Weaver (Lucille Ball) waiting at the airport where a United Airlines jet can be seen on the tarmac in the background.
Tumblr media
“Mr. & Mrs.” aka “The Lucille Ball Comedy Hour” (1964) ~ A comedy special in which Lucille Ball plays the head of a studio trying to track down Bob Hope to star in a show about husband and wife television stars. The first half concerns Lucy's tracking the elusive Hope all around the world. In San Francisco, there is establishing footage of a jet landing which was supplied courtesy of TWA, a carrier that went out of business in 2001.
Tumblr media
“The Victor Borge Comedy Theatre” (1962) & “Lucy Flies To London” (1966) ~ The unaired pilot for an unsold comedy anthology series hosted by Borge featured a sketch starring Gale Gordon and Lucille Ball as two strangers on a plan.
Tumblr media
It was filmed before “The Lucy Show” paired the two as a comedy duo. In the pilot, the characters were strangers. Gordon played a businessman and Ball a neurotic first-time flyer.
Tumblr media
When it came time for Lucy Carmichael to fly to London for the special “Lucy in London”, the writers realized they could recycle the script from the un-aired pilot for “The Lucy Show” episode. The dialogue is nearly identical, now with the added context that Mr. Mooney and Lucy are boss and secretary.
Tumblr media
“Lucy in London” (1966) ~ An hour-long special set in England and filmed on location. The sequence involving Lucy de-planing from the Pan Am clipper jet had to be accomplished in between flights already on the tarmac at Heathrow. No planes were available to be grounded for a day of shooting. Coincidentally (or perhaps not) Pan Am was also the carrier when Lucy Ricardo flew home from Europe and from Miami to Havana on “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Viv Visits Lucy” (1967) ~ To greet her old friend, Lucy meets her at the airport, where a backdrop shows jets on the tarmac. Lucy looks up and sees Viv’s flight approaching.
LUCY: “Oh, look! Someone’s hanging out of the plane. It look like Viv!” PILOT: “That’s the landing gear.” LUCY: “Oh.”
Tumblr media
“Little Old Lucy” (1967) ~ When the 90 year-old president of the bank (Dennis Day) is in town and needs an escort to the bank’s banquet, Lucy is volunteered.  Lucy and Mr. Mooney meet him at the airport, where jets can be seen in the background.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Carol Burnett: Part 1 & 2″ (1967) ~ Lucy and Carol Tilford (Carol Burnett) sign up to be flight attendants, then put on a variety show celebrating aviation. They are employed by the fictional Globe World Airlines.
Tumblr media
Instead of asking bachlor GWA VP Mr. Brenner if he would like coffee, tea or milk, Lucy says “coffee, tea or me”!  Earlier in 1967, the book Coffee Tea or Me? was published. It was the alleged memoirs of two stewardess and their romantic and sexual escapades in the air. The popularity of this book may be the reason for this episode.
Tumblr media
Frustrated by Lucy and Carol's bungling, Mr. Brenner (Rhodes Reason) says “Is this any way to run an airline?”  The line gets a huge reaction from the studio audience. In 1963 a National Airlines TV commercial featured a flight attendant asking “Is this any way to run an airline? You bet it is!”  In 1966, singer Tom Paxton wrote and recorded a song with the same title.
Tumblr media
In Part Two, their musical salute to aviation features Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen, stars of the very first Academy-Award winning motion picture Wings (1929), a movie about flight. Coincidentally, on the same day this airline-themed episode premiered, the supersonic Concorde was unveiled in France. Also on this date, newspapers announced the crash of a twin-engine plane in Madison, Wisconsin that killed recording star Otis Redding and six others.
Tumblr media
The revue ends with “The Army Air Corps Song” with flight attendants and college boys perched on the wings of a bi-plane.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Great Airport Chase” (1969) ~ Filmed entirely on location at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Lucy and Harry get caught up in chasing down spies. Part of the chase takes them onto the tarmac with the jets.
Tumblr media
A Douglas DC-8-52 of United Airlines is on the right and Douglas DC-8-54AF Jet Trader of United Airlines Jet Freighter is in the background.
Tumblr media
“The Carol Burnett Show” (1969) ~ In a sketch, Lucy and Carol play flight attendnts and Harvey Korman plays a mysterious passenger with a Fidel Castro-like beard, cigars tucked in his breast pocket, and a Spanish accent. When this episode was aired, hijackings were in the news.
Tumblr media
“Lucy, the Sky Diver” (1970) ~ Trying to show her kids how dangerous their hobbies are, Lucy jumps from a plane!  Although there is second unit location footage of the plane and Lucy floating down on her parachute, Lucille Ball remained at the studio with a recreation of the aircraft and a simulated parachute.
Tumblr media
“Lucy, the Part-Time Wife” (1970) ~ Lucy and Harry go to the airport to meet an old flame of his (Carole Cook). The airport background shows jets on the tarmac.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps David Frost Go Night-Night” (1971) ~ Lucy takes an assignment accompanying David Frost on a transatlantic flight so that he can get some rest. Thanks to Lucy, his flight is anything but restful!  The first class section of a 747 was recreated for the episode.
Tumblr media
The jet seen in the stock footage of the airport is a Pan Am Boeing 747 with an upper deck first class lounge.
Tumblr media
David Frost reckons that he has taken 346 air trips or traveled 1,853,000 miles!
Tumblr media
Mame (1974) ~ At the end of the film, Auntie Mame waves goodbye to Patrick, has she flies off to her next adventure.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Lucky” (1975) ~ Although Lucy Collins took the bus to Las Vegas to see her favorite star Dean Martin, at the end of the special she flies off into the sunset with him on his private jet. Dreams come true!
