Crabtree Ledge, Maine (Timeline)

1887 – Crabtree Ledge, in Frenchman's Bay, Maine.—This ledge, upon which there are from 8 to 12 feet of water at mean low tide, was surveyed, title to the site, with jurisdiction, was secured from the state of Maine, and drawings, specifications, and estimates for the lighthouse were prepared.

1888 – Crabtree Ledge, Frenchman's Bay, Maine.— On August 4,1886, Congress appropriated $25,000 for the erection of a light-house at this place. The Board designed an appropriate structure for this location and advertised for proposals for furnishing the metal-work and for its erection. The bids received showed that the amount appropriated was insufficient for the erection of the proper structure at this location, and the Board therefore obtained an appropriation of the additional $13,000 necessary for the erection of this light house. The work will now be undertaken at the earliest date practicable.

1889 – Crabtree Ledge, about 1 ½ miles south of Mount Desert Ferry, Maine.— Contracts were made for the metal work, for the cement, and for the erection of the light-house. Part of the metal work and of the cement were delivered at Mount Desert Ferry. The location of the foundation cylinder was fixed upon the ledge, and the building of a crib-pier around it was commenced.

1890 – Crabtree's Ledge, Frenchman's Bay, Maine.—A fifth-order light, January 15, 1890.

1890 – Crabtree's Ledge, between Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Ferry, Frenchman's Bay, Maine.—The light-house recently constructed consists of a cylindrical iron caisson, 25 feet in diameter and 32 feet in height, founded upon a rock 15 feet below mean sea-level. It is filled with concrete and surmounted by an iron tower, 37 feet high from base to focal plane, and was finished December 31, 1889. A fixed white light of the fifth order, varied by a white flash every two minutes, illuminates the whole horizon, and was first exhibited on January 15, 1890.

1914 – Jerome H. Peasley, keeper, rendered assistance in getting schooner-yacht White Wings off rocks near station.

1916 – J.H. Peasley, keeper, towed disabled motor boat with 1 man on board to shore.

1916 – October 2. Assistant Keeper Chester Brinkworth, 31, and his brother Charles [Arthur Leon], 27 [20], were drowned Saturday near Crabtree Ledge Lighthouse at the entrance to Sullivan Harbor, according to information received here today at the Lighthouse Department. Capt. Sherman went with the lighthouse tender Hibiscus to search for the bodies. Charles Brinkworth fell from a dory, and his brother sprang overboard to rescue him, both perishing. Jerome C. Peaslee, keeper of the light, was ill, and his assistant, Chester Brinkworth, had gone ashore to bring back his brother as helper. The two were lost on the return trip. Chester Brinkworth’s body and the capsized dory were found by the Hibiscus, which is searching for the body of Chester’s brother. The latter has left his home at Hancock Point in the face of a heavy wind and high seas. Friends advised against his making the trip, but young Brinkworrh said that, with the keeper in a hospital, his brother would be lonely.

1917 – March 21. Captain Joseph Whitmore, assistant keeper of Crabtree ledge light, was drowned by the capsizing of a boat in which he was returning to his post from Ellsworth, Me.

1933 – Crabtree Ledge Lighthouse discontinued.

1934 – Sold to a group of yachtsmen for $105.

1950 – Crabtree Ledge Lighthouse collapsed during a winter storm.

Historically, the youngest marine captains

According to Nils Larsen, Leon Grabowsky, the youngest ship commander in history, is recognized by the U.S. Navy in its record book. Grabowsky, who was born to Polish immigrants in Paris, France, enrolled at an early age and completed his education at the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1941. He took part in some of the most important engagements of the war while serving as an ensign on the battleship Arizona. However, his youth did not stop him from taking over the helm of a destroyer.

A family may find the life of a deep sea captain hard. The first female ship captain in the navy, Annabelle Fraser, was the world's youngest ship captain in 1881. A captain of a big multinational ship may find life challenging for his family as well. During a force eight gale, his father's crabbing boat, the Cesca, had to be abandoned. Alexander Moodie, the fiancée of a Maersk officer, finally attained the rank of captain despite the challenges.

John of Gaunt, an Englishman who was just 15 years old at the time and later became a co-owner of the privateer Neptune, was the second-youngest ship commander in history. Newport acquired a portion of the unfortunate ship Neptune, which had taken a Spanish colony, in the middle of the 1590s. His efforts earned him the title of ship's captain in the annals of history.

Nils Larsen described that, two other women are working as bridge officers on the Ferry in addition to McLaughlin. Jim Harkin is a former navy officer, and Sharen Belote joined the Ferry as a sailor. Both received bridge captain promotions following six years of CMLF service. Captain Urban is the fourth woman. No woman has ever had a permanent job in the marine section of the Ferry, despite the fact that several women have been appointed as captains.

Francis William Moore, a different young ship captain in history, was born on January 9, 1853, in Stepney, Scotland. He started his apprenticeship when he was just 24 years old, and two months later received a Master's Certificate. He was the Master of a ship in Willis' fleet when he turned 50. Then, when the Cutty Sark and Coldstream were both docked in New York at the same time, he went on to command two other steam-powered ships.

James Cook discovered techniques that let him sail the oceans more expertly throughout his expeditions. He made use of navigation, astronomy, sophisticated mathematics, and mapping. Cook made an effort to abduct the chief after a conflict with local Hawaiians in the Hawaiian Islands in order to retrieve a stolen cutter from his ship. Cook gained navigational skills throughout Australia's west coast as a result. He became the youngest ship captain in history as a result of his travels.

While J'Varin Riker, Kirk's successor during the TNG era, attained the rank of first officer at age 29, Kirk became the youngest captain in Starfleet history at age 27. However, in the middle of the 24th century, this is not very noteworthy. In a similar spirit, Picard was elevated to the rank while on duty, while the first officer of a Starship at the Academy was also a Captain before his 30th birthday. In a similar vein, Janeway, although not having commanded her first ship until she was 23 when Voyager was commissioned, was a captain by the year 2333.

In addition to Nils Larsen, Wallace's first trip to China was successful, but his second trip was complicated by an English Channel storm. On the third trip, he carried a coal load from Sydney to Shanghai. He got there on October 30, 1878, in Shanghai. Sydney Smith, his first friend, was a bully. John Francis, a third mate who was underqualified and uncooperative, was one crew member. Wallace was in this circumstance and stepped over the stern taffrail, drowning.

In 1803, Commodore Preble assigned Bainbridge command of the brand-new Philadelphia, a squadron of ships outfitted to take on Barbary corsairs. Bainbridge and the Philadelphia went ahead of the rest of the fleet on their inaugural expedition. HMS Java, the first of these ships, was a ship sailing towards the East Indies. It was transporting Bombay's recently elected lieutenant-governor.

The Kidnapped Local “Princess”: How the Patawomeck People Navigated Deceit from All Sides

“Captaine Argall intelligence, but he delt with an old friend, and adopted brother of his Iapazeus, how and by what meanes he might procure hir captive, assuring him, that now or never, was the time to pleasure him, if he entended indeede that love which he had made profession of, that in ransome of hir he might redeeme some of our English men and armes…” Raphe Hamor recorded the kidnapping of Pocahontas in his “A True Discourse of the Present Estate of Virginia” printed in 1615. He served as Secretary of the Virginia colony until 1614 and returned to Virginia in 1617 where his life was strife with conflict and controversy. While he claimed Captain Samuel Argall lured the Patawomeck subchief Iopassus (Iapazeus) into helping capture Pocahontas for the reward of a “small Copper kettle, and some other les valuable toies so highly by him esteemed”, he greatly misunderstood the situation and the indigenous people.

While the Patawomeck peoples paid tribute to Powhatan, they lived on the fringe of the alliance’s territory, closer to other hostile Algonquian-speaking groups. The people deftly maneuvered between many tumultuous relationships as the English certainly added new elements to their political and social worlds. While Captain John Smith claimed he encountered the Patawomeck people in 1608, even falsely reported they secreted a “glistering metal”, Captain Samuel Argall’s expeditions led him to actively engage in diplomacy, hoping to create a fissure in the tenuous indigenous alliances. From 1609-1614, the First Anglo-Powhatan War raged between the English and Powhatan’s alliances, persisting in small-scale but frequent and persistent warfare. Sidenote: Some scholars argue the label “Anglo-Powhatan War” misidentifies the complexities of the situation, only addressing it from an English perspective. However, the ongoing conflict led to serious problems such as food supply and Captain Argall headed north to find willing trade partners. In 04/1613, Argall learned Pocahontas was in the town of Passapatanzy, recognizing that she would be a valuable hostage. Regarding Iopassus role in the deception of detaining and kidnapping Pocahontas on a boat, Hamor recorded, “he [Iopassus] would reserve Pocahuntas, whereat she began to be exceeding pensive, and discontented, yet ignorant of the dealing of Iapazeus, who in outward appearance was no less discontented that he should be the meanes of her captivity, much a doe there was to perswade her to be patient, which with extraordinary curteous usage, by little and little was wrought in her, and so to James towne she was brought, a messenger to her father forthwith dispached to advertise him, that his only daughter was in the hands & possession of the English…” Pocahontas was a hostage in Jamestown for about a year as the English and Powhatans negotiated and her marriage to John Rolfe in 04/1614 brought an uneasy truce for a short period.

Unfortunately, we do not have a first-person account from Iopassus or the Patawomeck peoples. English sources are fraught with indigenous stereotypes, presumed cultural superiority, misunderstanding (and lack of wanting to), and agenda as letters and narratives measured and generated the financial backbone of the Virginia Company. In 1617, the same year Pocahontas died, John Rolfe printed “A True Relation of the state of Virginia Lefte by Sir Thomas Dale Knight in May Last 1616, referring back to Hamor’s writings, “How happily and plenteously the good blessings of God have fallen upon the people and colony since the last impression, faithfully written by a gent. of good merit, Mr. Ralph Hamor, (some tyme an actuall member in the Plantation, even then departing when the foundacoun and ground worke was new laid of their now thrift and happines,) of the earthie and worldly man is scarcely believed, but of heavenlier minds they are most easilie discerned, for they daily attend and marke how those blessings, (though sometimes restrayned for a tyme,) in the end, are poured upon the servants of the Lord.” As with Hamor, Rolfe also had an agenda to promote in keeping the Virginia Company alive and thriving with interest and influential backers overseas. Many complicated factors went into the decision to assist in the kidnapping of Pocahontas – from potential benefits and veiled and no so subtle threats. A “small Copper kettle” could not determine the decisions of a people that thrived in a setting with shifting enemies and neighbors. The Patawomecks would again ally with the English but earnest English encroachment in 1654, combined with disease and declaration of war on the peoples in 1666 led to the disappearance of the people in the English records.

Public Information:

Chris’ occupation as a ferry captain, as well as the unique steam-powered seafaring ship that he helms. The rates for his ferry are well-known, along with his side business of exporting goods from other regions like Alola or Kalos.

That Corinna Leone, the well-known dance teacher and coordinator who came to Sinnoh from Paldea, is his mother. The old couple that run the shop in Celestic Town being his grandparents is fairly public as well, with a few photos of him as a child hanging from the walls.

That, for years, he frequently sailed to Newmoon Island and visited Canalave’s abandoned Harbor Inn despite the well-known warnings about them. Along with those, he is known to visit other strange or supposedly cursed places. His reasons for why are unknown to the public.

Info known to those close to him or forgotten by the public (but can still be found):

That he participated in Sinnoh’s gym challenge, and worked with Regigigas to breeze through all but Sunnyshore City’s gym. Due to him abandoning Sinnoh to travel the world for over half a decade, his gradual abandoning of battling, and the use of a false last name for said half-decade.

His ability to understand what pokemon say despite his lack of psychic or aura-related abilities. While he has never specified how he understands them, it was well known for a long time that he could serve as a translator if anyone needed it.

His long winning streak as a coordinator. His record of back-to-back wins was the third longest in Hearthome, though many forgot about him after he announced that he was taking a break. A break that he still hasn’t returned from.

His old habits of physically scrapping with wild pokemon alongside his partners. Rumors from back then can still be found online or in old news articles.

His title of Duke at the Battle Chateau in Kalos. Spent years away from the Chateau, mostly forgotten about aside from records and photos kept by staff.

His ownership over Oshus Island. However, ever since the dock was erected, a few sailors have taken notice that his steamship is frequently moored there.

That his father, Jarrod Eldridge, is a member of Sinnoh law enforcement and that Chris is his son. Few but a handful of his father’s friends and family members know that the two have any relation due to them rarely doing anything around Hearthome together.

Non-Public Knowledge:

He rarely talks with either of his parents, having long moved out of his mother’s house in Hearthome. Despite telling both that they can call him if they want to talk or meet up, his mother never calls him, only sending him texts occasionally that he doesn’t respond to until hours later. His father, on the other hand, calls him at least a few times a week to see how Chris is doing, often talking about wanting to go out on his ship for a vacation or going fishing like they used to.

That his body is littered with scars, with especially nasty scarring on his legs after an attack from Rayquaza blasted shards of metal into them. His current style of clothing, while it may be worn for style and comfort, also serves as a way to hide his old wounds so no questions about them arise.

That he researches the myths and legends from around the world. The libraries aboard his ship and in his house on Oshus Island are kept under lock and key, either hidden by illusions or hand-waved as unimportant storage rooms. His sources for his research, unless he is the source, are also kept a secret.

His numerous personal experiences with legendary and mythical pokemon beyond those he works with. How said experiences have impacted him. How they made him into the man he is now. It’s not uncommon for him to stop his research and ponder why he, of all people, had the privilege to see these beasts and gods of mythology. He often debates with himself whether it’s some sort of destiny that was written for him to play out, or if he was merely lucky, being in the right place at the right time.

His former affiliation with Hoenn’s Pokemon League through a friend. After his friend vanished off the face of the planet, his connections went with it, but not before he was gifted the Regis by said friend. Years later, he still wonders what happened to him.

The near-death experience he lived through after daring to brave Route 216, during a blizzard, with little more than short-sleeved clothing and a scarf. The foolhardy decision left him with a fear of snowy weather and ice, and though his fear of it has dwindled with the passage of time, he still actively avoids traveling to northern Sinnoh if he can help it.
