"Women have played association football since the beginnings of the sport.
In a number of countries, however, women's football has historically been subjected to severe restrictions, including outright bans during most of the 20th century.
These bans have had a significant impact on the development of the sport.
Following the outbreak of World War I and the subsequent mass mobilisation of women into the workforce, interest in women's football rose rapidly and many teams and tournaments were founded.
The interest in the sport continued to grow following the end of the war and into the 1920s.
During this period, which has been referred to as a first golden age for women's football, matches were able to attract significant audiences.
However, the end of the war also brought with it a backlash against the gains women's had made, including legal changes to rollback women's employment, such the Restoration of Pre-War Practices Act 1919, and moral panics, such as over the flapper sub-culture. (…)
During the 1910s, women's football in the UK saw a significant surge in growth which would continue past the end of World War I and into the 1920s.
During this period, women's matches often attracted thousands of spectators, with the top teams, such as Dick, Kerr Ladies F.C., attracting audiences in the tens of thousands.
Many of these matches were played for charity, often raising thousands of pounds, and the game was growing to the point where interest rivaled that of men's games.
However, The Football Association viewed the growth and success of women's football with distrust and increasingly saw it as a rival competitor to men's profits, particularly as the FA had announced a significant expansion of the men's English Football League in 1920.
As well, the FA had little control over the finances of women's matches and was opposed to the charity matches that had been played in support of workers taking strike actions, such as during the Miners' Federation of Great Britain lockout.
As a result, on 5 December 1921, the FA imposed a ban on women's football, stating that "the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and should not be encouraged" and alleging that "an excessive proportion of the receipts are absorbed in expenses and an inadequate percentage devoted to charitable objects."
When women's teams attempted to continue to organise matches on non-football grounds, such as on cricket or rugby grounds, the FA further pressured the organisations in charge of those grounds to deny women permission.
The English was also endorsed by several football associations elsewhere in the British Empire, such as the Queensland Football Association and the Dominion of Canada Football Association.
In 1969, the Women's Football Association was formed with representatives of over 40 different independent clubs.
In 1971, the FA announced that the ban on women's football would be lifted.
The WFA would formally affiliate itself to the FA in 1983, and in 1993, the FA took over direct responsibility for women's football.
In 2008, the FA issued a formal apology for the ban. (…)
Simon Kuper and economist Stefan Szymanski, authors of Soccernomics, have argued that the bans on women's football would today represent violations of competition law and that the associations that imposed bans should be retrospectively fined damages, with the money being used to invest into the women's game.
Kuper and Szymanski further added that women's football wasn't just "some potential untapped market, but a business sector that was regularly selling tens of thousands of match tickets.
These revenues would surely have grown over time, as men’s revenues did." (…)
Belinda Scarlett of the National Football Museum has stated that the bans "perpetuated the myth that football is not a women's game, which is something women still fight for today," adding that women's football still has to struggle "for pitch space, for financial support, for media coverage."
Research by Stacey Pope of Durham University has found that many of the same attitudes that men used to justify bans of women's football in the 1920s are still widespread today.
A 2020 paper by Lisa Jenkel of the University of Groningen that press coverage of bans of women's football in the 1920s portrayed the sport as a threat to the "natural, biological order of the sexes" and on the "compatibility of women’s football and contemporary gender norms."
Jenkel further found that in contemporary social media discourse around women's football, "sexualisation of players and spectators, dismissing women’s matches as ‘unwatchable’ or disputing the game being a sport, are seemingly still part of some mindsets.""

It's Pride month in Canada, Pride weekend in Toronto. The coach and 4 of the current squad are openly gay. It's not a big deal for female athletes to be out in Canada. I wish other countries could have such freedom.
Me too. I wish that too.
The Matildas, Australia's women's national soccer team has a few out and proud players. They are loved and supported by us all (well most would be more like it). Funny how people find it much easier to accept a queer female athlete than a male one (especially in the team sports, like soccer, football, rugby) - food for thought.
And even then, when there being more acceptance with women athletes, they are still on the receiving end of hate and bigotry.
This article is from 2019, but I'd say things haven't gotten much better since. In some places in the world, places we expected better of (USA) it feels like we are going backwards instead of forward.
People just need to be better.
How do we do that? Change the world, eh? Make it a better, safer place for everyone, regardless of their gender, sexuality, race, colour of skin, shape of eyes, religion and so forth?

Singapore 7s: Fiji defeated Ireland 26-19 in the last pool match.
The Fiji Airways National Men’s 7s team defeated Ireland 26-19 in their final pool match at the HSBC Singapore 7s this afternoon. Terio Tamani scored two tries, while Joji Nasova and Ponipate Loganimasi each scored one.
Ireland was brutal in both defense and offense, derailing Fiji’s game plan. Gavin Mullin, Terry Kennedy, and Jordan Conroy all scored tries for Ireland.
Fiji’s win did not qualify them for the cup quarterfinals because they finished last in their pool with four points.
Fiji lost 33-14 to the United States in their first pool match, and 19-14 to Great Britain in the second. The cup quarter-finals will start today at 11 p.m., while the semi-finals will start tomorrow at 5.48 p.m.

“Women’s” Sports
For the past two weeks I’ve been ruminating on the future of women’s sports. With the constant evolution of gender identity, sports organizations are now in the murky business of deciding who can compete where. As one of maybe the first generation of Canada females to have free and equal access to sport, (I could join/play anything and never thought about my “right” to do so), I am very aware of the struggles of the generations before me so I could live my sports dreams. My main sport was badminton, a sport naturally set up for equal access with women’s and men’s event, but also a mixed event. I was shocked when I moved to the U.S. to find high school badminton categorized as a “women’s” sport. Basically they had cooked the books to satisfy the letter of the law in Title IX, (and soured my entire opinion of said Title). I also played varsity soccer at university, and I’ve played recreational slo-pitch, (on both women’s and mixed teams). So yes…I’ve been living the dream.
Then I saw something a few weeks back that has me worried. And talking about it, is going to be awkward because it’s a sensitive subject as many of us work to embrace people as they are, as they see themselves, but here I go…
I think we are going to lose the entire realm of “women’s” sports. There, I’ve said it.
Last week I saw a transgender woman playing on a sports team. She clearly dominated because she had transitioned after puberty, and had far superior upper body strength, (a plus in the sport I was watching), compared to any other person in this national championship event. While I strongly support identifying with whatever gender gives you a healthy and happier life, I suddenly realized what this could mean to “women’s” sports: that those of us who are born women and remain so, will be phased out of competitive sport as we can’t possible compete with bigger stronger women who have transitioned to women after puberty. When I realized this, I felt like I had been punched in the gut . Sure, we can still play in recreational or intramural leagues, but what about those of us who yearn for the tough competition? Will we have to have “women’s” and “girly-girl” leagues? WTH?
The reality is that not all sports will be affected, sports where upper body strength and less flexibility is a handicap will be fine. Sports like gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, etc shouldn’t be affected much, but swimming, volleyball, basketball, racquet sports, rugby, soccer…will all change. If you watch these sports today, the men’s game and the women’s game are profoundly different: to generalize, women’s sports are more technical, men’s sports rely more on power. As we accept more transgender women into women’s sports, it will become more power oriented. This is exactly what I witnessed the other week: when this women was on the field of play, the “power” ramped up exponentially.
While I’ve had some time to lament and cry over the future of “women’s” sports, I’ve also taken some time to think about what we should do about it. Currently post secondary leagues in Canada have restrictions on how many foreign players you can have on your roster. That’s there to protect Canadian players and to grow the sport for Canadians. However, I’m not a big fan of restricting the number of “trans” players a team can have: that seems like further wading into murky waters, but it IS one potential solution I guess? I think I’m leaning towards getting rid of gender identification in sport all together. A few decades ago here in B.C. we had a very strong women’s badminton player. She had come from China, and frankly our women just didn’t give her a competitive game. So, the tournament organizers changed the “Men’s Singles” even to “Open Singles” and she played there. She didn’t win the event, but she did have competitive matches and she was happy, and by the way, the men didn’t find her a walk over either. Thinking sort of along those lines, I’m wondering if we have leagues divided by something like testosterone levels? If your testosterone, (or some other reliable hormone level…I’m not a medical/science professional), is above the dividing level, you play in this league: if it’s below that, you play in that league. I think that something like this eliminates talk of gender identity, gets sport out of subjective decision making, eliminates bias, and still welcomes and encourages everyone to play in competitive leagues. You could also put in a way for people who are eligible to play in the lower hormones league to “play up” if their skill set warrants it, (either by knowing them locally, or by a recognized ranking system at higher levels of competition).
I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I do know that if we don’t address it sooner rather than later, those of us who are born female and identify as female will once again find ourselves on the outside looking in…with our mothers and grandmothers who fought so hard to make space for us, wringing their hands.

A speed skater from Campbellton, N.B., and a wheelchair basketball player from Fredericton will be Team New Brunswick’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown.
Team New Brunswick chef de mission Nicole Smith made the announcement Friday as athletes, coaches and managers travelled to Prince Edward Island’s capital city.
“Being so close to Prince Edward Island, these Canada Games are going to be extra special for our athletes, parents and friends,” said Smith in a news release.
“Our proximity also allows New Brunswick to assist these games by hosting alpine and freestyle skiing and snowboard events at Central Hainesville’s Crabbe Mountain.”
Courtney Charlong, 16, recently set two provincial speed skating records and won the Junior Short Track Canada Cup held in Richmond, B.C., last year.
Austin MacLellan, 21, competed in the wheelchair basketball Junior Worlds in Thailand last September and was invited to a Wheelchair Rugby National Team training camp in December 2022 and March 2023.
He was also a member of Team New Brunswick’s 2019 Canada Games wheelchair basketball team, which placed fourth.
Both Charlong and MacLellan will lead the New Brunswick delegation into Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre, the site of the opening ceremony on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Over a dozen communities on P.E.I. will host more than 3,600 young athletes, coaches and managers from across the nation to compete in over 20 sports and 150 events during the games between Saturday and March 5.
“Over the next two weeks, communities from tip to tip will be buzzing with excitement as young people and their sporting families from across our great country make lasting memories of their time here in P.E.I.,” said P.E.I. Premier Dennis King in a Friday news release.
“The Canada Games stage is the dream so many young people have strived for over months and years, and it is a proud moment for our province to be part of their sporting journey. On behalf of all Island residents, we are incredibly proud of you.”
Events will also take place in New Brunswick at Crabbe Mountain, which will host ski and snowboard events. Meanwhile in Nova Scotia, Halifax’s Emera Oval will host speed skating.

The action was heating up on and off the pitch as fans were treated to an action-packed day of rugby sevens entertainment against the stunning backdrop of the city from Singapore’s National Stadium on the opening day of HSBC SVNS Singapore.
For the 2023–24 season, the rugby competition will be known as the HSBC SVNS. Twelve countries will compete in an eight-event series that will travel the globe.
