RIP Terrence Hardiman (6.4.1937 - 9.5.2023)

"I started to be recognised in the street, especially as I lived near schools around here, in North-West London. And there were people – youngsters – looking at me, and shouting out at me, and making fun of me, which is very healthy. It stopped me being too grand!"

"I have been lucky and achieved a lot in my career but then so have a lot of actors when they get to my age. I am of an age now where I think that anything that comes after this is a bonus. It is nice to be asked but also I would be perfectly happy to sit back now and not do anything else."

An agreeable challenge! I would like to cast her as Aline. I think Aline's steeliness is somewhat overlooked. After all, she negotiates with a king, confronts the aftermath of a siege, and holds her own while trying to cope with newly acquired power and the dynamics of a disputed king's court at the same time. Also, there is the fact that Hugh Beringar, who will lie unblushingly, risk his own neck in a good cause, and out-scheme anyone but a rare Benedictine, takes one look at her and says: that one. I think she's great.

Pentiment Easter Egg

Pentiment has a Cadfael Easter Egg! 😍 I've just had Andreas break into the library, and he comes across a book of herbs: "The author's called Cadfaellus of Salopia (i.e. Shrewsbury). He doesn't sound familiar."

But he does to me! Read most of the Cadfael books when I was around thirteen. They're lovely. Ellis Peters also wrote novels about the Welsh Princes, which have been on my reading list for decades and which I am absolutely going to read next year.

where is the Cadfael themed met gala. everyone dresses like a Benedictine monk from the 1100s who would for sure have been a Franciscan except the order wasn’t invented yet. where is Jeremy strong in a monk’s hood, freshly shaved tonsure, as if he has only just made the life-altering decision to become a man of the cloth. Everyone has a sprig of some herb behind their ear but it has to be an herb that Cadfael himself would have grown in his herbarium
