out for attention on the southeastern coast of Europe, Albania is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, this small country has a lot to offer to travelers looking for a unique and authentic experience.
Albania is a country of contrasts, where ancient ruins stand side by side with modern cities, and traditional customs blend seamlessly with contemporary trends. One of the most striking features of Albania is its diverse landscape, which ranges from rugged mountains to pristine beaches. The Albanian Riviera, with its crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches, is a paradise for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts. Inland, the country is dotted with picturesque villages and lush valleys, perfect for hiking and exploring.
Albania is also a country with a rich history and a vibrant cultural heritage. From the ancient ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Ottoman-era architecture of Gjirokaster and Berat, Albania is a treasure trove of historical landmarks. The country's history is also reflected in its cuisine, which is a delicious blend of Mediterranean and Balkan flavors. Traditional dishes like fergese, a hearty stew made with peppers, tomatoes, and cheese, and byrek, a flaky pastry filled with meat or vegetables, are a must-try for foodies.
But what truly sets Albania apart is its people. Albanians are known for their warm hospitality and generosity, and visitors are often welcomed like long-lost friends. The country's strong sense of community and family values is evident in the way people come together to celebrate festivals and holidays. One of the most important traditions in Albania is the Kanun, a code of conduct that governs everything from family relationships to social interactions. This sense of tradition and community is what gives Albania its unique charm and makes it a truly special place to visit.
Despite its many charms, Albania remains a relatively undiscovered destination, making it the perfect choice for travelers looking to escape the crowds and explore a hidden gem. The country's tourism industry is still in its infancy, but this only adds to its appeal, as visitors can experience a more authentic and unspoiled side of Albania. Whether you're exploring the ancient ruins of Apollonia, relaxing on the beaches of Ksamil, or hiking in the Accursed Mountains, Albania is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.
In recent years, Albania has been making efforts to promote itself as a tourist destination, and the results are starting to show. The country has invested in infrastructure improvements, such as new roads and hotels, to make it easier for visitors to explore its many attractions. The government has also been working to promote Albania's cultural heritage and natural beauty through initiatives like the Albanian Riviera National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites program.
Albania is a country that is full of surprises, and there is always something new to discover around every corner. Whether you're exploring the bustling streets of Tirana, the capital city, or wandering through the ancient ruins of Apollonia, there is no shortage of things to see and do in Albania. And with its warm hospitality, stunning landscapes, and rich history, this hidden gem is sure to capture your heart and leave you wanting more.
So if you're looking for a unique and authentic travel experience, look no further than Albania. This small country may be off the beaten path, but it is well worth the journey. From its stunning landscapes to its rich history and warm hospitality, Albania has something for everyone. So pack your bags, book your ticket, and get ready to explore this hidden gem in the heart of Europe. Albania is waiting for you, so don't keep it waiting any longer.

Dag 11: Butrint National park
Tumblr media
Deze basiliek was nog minimaal 3-4 Paul hoog!

Butrint National Park, August 2022
We saw this beautiful UNESCO heritage site today. Butrint is home to 1200 different animals and plants. It has the lake and lagoon of Nutrint, wonderful for Nala to cool off💧💦
The archaeological site, one of the most important in Albania, is displaying the remains of ancient civilisations with artefacts and structures dating from the Iron Age up until the Middle Ages. ⚔🐴
I had a beautiful walk, seeing the remains of the city walls, a late-antiwue baptistery, a great basilica, a Roman theatre, a merchant house, and two castles. 🏰 🎭 🏹

Winter in Sarande
When I arrived, hotels were shuttered. I walked along the boardwalk knocking on doors and peering into darkened lobbies. Finally, I found a hotel to sleep in. I think the man at the desk was as surprised to see me as I was him!
I missed the bus to Butrint National Park. For me, it was a must see. I paid a taxi driver 4000 Lek to get me there and back. It was worth it! I got to crawl over ancient rocks all to myself!
As of January 2022, here are the bus departures out of Sarande!

Albania is beautiful
Some beautiful places in Albania.
Apollonia
Tumblr media
Apollonia was an ancient city-state, now in ruins, but that doesn’t make it any less fascinating. A beautiful place for history lovers, it can be found about 7 - 10 km west of the city Fier. Apollonias’ name comes from “Apollo/Apollon”, the greek god of light, oracles and healing.
Berat
Tumblr media
“The city of the thousand windows” can be found by the Osum river. It was named an UNESCO World heritage site in 2008 and it is actually forbidden to construct new buildings in three seperate parts of Berat to preserve the architectural character of the ottoman period. Unfortunately, due to illegal construction projects near the city center, the international council on monuments and sites proclaimed the world heritage site to be in danger in 2013.
Ksamil Islands
Tumblr media
Located in the south of Albania, within Butrint National Park, the Ksamil Islands form a rectangle in Ksamil Bay. Two of the islands are natural monuments, which are endangered due to erosion. A project to rehabilitate said islands was undertaken in 2016/17. The islands are uninhabited and the only way to reach them is by boat.
Tirana
Tumblr media
Tirana is Albanias’ capital and the cultural center of the country. Although it is assumed that the region was inhabited since prehistoric times, the earliest building that was found dates back to the 3rd century AD. Tiranas’ first land registration took place in 1432 under the Ottomans, who conquered the area in 1417 and it was not named the official capital of Albania until December 1925. In terms of entertainment Tirana has variety of things to offer: the National History Museum on Skanderbeg Square for history lovers, the Pyramid of Tirana for some graffiti art (also history since it was supposed to be a museum for Enver Hoxha once but after the fall of communism became a cultural venue), Dajti National Park for a bit of nature, the Ring Center for some shopping, the Blloku area for restaurants and bars and for nightlife, such as the Radio Bar and Balux Tirana.
The Llogara Pass
Tumblr media
One of the most well-known places in Albania is the Llogara Pass. Situated in the Ceraunian Mountains, it makes up a part of the  Rruga shtetërore SH8 and reaches up to 1000 metres above sea level. Along the Pass, you’ll find a variety of restaurants as well as some beautiful views of the Llogara National Park.
