Cesarie’s den pulsed with an organic, ethereal green light. He squinted through his goggles to see delicate glow worms threaded from the cave ceiling, softly wriggling from their silken strands. Seep chuckled, he could relate. His own experimental subjects could be just as cheeky.
“This is my prototype.” She grunted, rolling the jar onto its side and tweaking the instruments and strappings attached to it. “I call her ALGEE. Aviator Levitator Green Energy … something something… I’m workin’ on it.”
“Ehh, the acronym’s usually more important than the words used to put it together.” He shrugged, “But uh, what does it mean? What is that thing?”
After bashing a few loose screws into place she heaped the jar onto her back (Seep watched her ‘percussive adjustments’ approvingly, making note to brush up on his own technique.) She pulled the arm straps tight and the jar sat snuggly between her two sails. She placed on an aviator’s cap and pinged the goggles to her forehead.
“Stand back.”
Seep coiled himself back into what little room the lab had for his huge, winding body.
Cesarie yanked a toggle on her strap and the jar hummed and sizzled with light. The glass shook violently and it began to lift of its own accord, pulling her up like a hot air balloon. She hung precariously in the air, her legs kicking and her tail wagging excitedly.
Seep laughed in amazement, “Impressive! And this is the prototype? This could be a paradigm shift in–”
There was a crack and a hiss and a whizz all at once.
Cesarie dropped like a stone and hit the ground with a winded “Oof.”
Cesarie picked up her jar of gooey, glowy ALGEE and juggled it from one paw to another. It must have been hot from the intense chemical reactions. There was a large crack down the size. 
“As I said. Prototype. But one day, this baby’ll fly all the way to the dunes and back. That foreman will be sorry he ever fired me for collecting algal samples on the job…” She began to rant and ramble once again, Seep sat himself down for the long haul.

So, I finally watched the first episode of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, and I have some thoughts
First of all, the intro for this first episode being a nightmare of one of the flying cities plummeting to earth during the eventual War of the Calamity, with Asmodeus himself offering to one of our protagonists the suggestion that the Betrayer Gods weren't the true traitors? Holy fuck, Brennan Lee Mulligan, what the hell are you doing?!
After that, I don't have much to say other than just how incredible everyone's characters are--they feel so unique and real, I feel like I know so much about all six of the Ring of Brass even though we just met them. Obviously, Cerrit is my favorite--Travis has been pulling some crazy characters these last couple campaigns and Cerrit might be my favorite yet. Honestly, I want to watch a full-on animatic of his investigation of the ritual room, with all the descriptions cut out so it's just dialogue, set to an intense mystery soundtrack, it's so good!
And of course, there are the references. Rumors of Aeor planning to strike against another region--Brennan clearly paralleling Aeor's machinations to Russia's recent actions--and hinting at the first test of the Factorum Malus. The appearance of Champion Purvon, and his feeling of dread from the Matron. This world is so much what I'd hope for pre-Calamity Exandria, and it's so good.
And then there are the story threads--there's so much going on with these characters, and it pains me knowing that there is a high likelihood that they'll all just end up loose because these characters are fated to die. There is a chance that they might live, but it is such a slim chance! But I'm especially curious for what Laerryn has planned with that piece of Celestial Gold--obviously she's planning something extraplanar, something likely to do with the leylines mentioned at the start of the episode, but what is it?
And of course, that last scene. Both the show of incredible skill from Cerrit in the middle of another investigation, to the haunting sight that reappeared as he killed his invisible watcher, to the otherworldly visitor he was almost assaulted by. Brennan came out this first episode swinging and ended it with a haymaker to put us down for a week, and I'm still dazed!
My biggest question, though, is what is going to happen to the city? I mean, you don't introduce a flying city and a crater it perfectly fits into without something going amiss. Critical Role already has a two-for-two history with flying islands getting sent crashing to earth--first with Draconia, and then with the history of Aeor. The fact that this whole mini-arc has already introduced a praised and lauded return to earth and remooring itself as the major note of import, and that it is a very specific mountain...
All I can think of, honestly...is if Brennan is going to make Avalir crash into the earth with such force, that the mountain is split and shattered into the five spires of J'rusar we know today. The spires were once one mountain that was struck by a Betrayer god during the Calamity--why couldn't it have been struck down from the air high above first?

Follyglass : Ember
On Everember night, we gather as many candles as we can fit onto the brass charger, and then light them one by one.
When I was little and excited I would wait for her to come, but father said it would never happen “ ‘til you’re dreaming,” which to me sounded sideways from true, so for a while I had my doubts about the whole Everember night thing.
In the morning, we’d always wake to find all of the flames out. Surely, the candles just went out as candles do. But we never found the wax slumped and muddled together, each candle stood as straight as if we had left it just moments ago, and perhaps someone like father came by and blew them out.
Sometimes when he brought out the candles, father saw the question in my face and he would simply say that Everember night is a tradition that is important to pass on. It seemed a stupid reason to keep doing anything… not that I said this.
Only when I was seventeen and in danger of my breath threading from me did the black wolf come. She tilted her head. Without words, I understood then that what was about to happen was some sort of agreement. A stewardship of sorts, and when my soul said yes did she open her great jaws – I remember the mountain-chains of her teeth hanging over my body – did she breathe a tiny but steady ember into my gasping mouth. I remember the flame being no bigger than the ones that crowned a thin birthday candle. I remember the fuzzing warmth upon my tongue, and the way it drifted down my throat towards my lungs.
Now on Everember night, after I light my own brass charger full of candles and settle into my soft bed, I dream that I am a great black wolf loping through hollow and village, the crowns of trees brushing at my sides, searching for the small flames so that I might eat them and feel them fizzing and golden in my throat.
Other times I dream that I am breathing sparks into needful mouths.
