On seeing Che Guevara’s mural, Balvir Singh’s neighbours asked whether he had painted a ghost in their village.
Mander Kaur, Singh’s next-door neighbour said, “To tell you the truth, my kids wanted Balvir to paint over the mural. They were convinced that Che was a bhoot (ghost) because of his long flowing hair..they were scared to leave the house.”
Expecting such a reaction, Singh explained to them how, like Bhagat Singh, Guevara was also a revolutionary socialist. He then pointed to Lenin’s mural and said that his ideas were particularly inspirational for Bhagat Singh. “I told them how Lenin was one of Bhagat Singh’s Gurus, after which they stopped pestering me to get rid of the murals,” said Balvir Singh.
Gursewak Singh, a professor who also resides in Bhai Desa village, said, “This is a time when our youth needs to be reminded of what Bhagat Singh and these revolutionaries believed in. And because of Balvir’s paintings, there has certainly been some interest in learning about samajwad (socialism) and kranti (revolution).”
Although Balvir Singh otherwise runs a flex business store in the nearby city of Maur Mandi, the recent lockdown left him without any work and he decided to keep himself busy by painting the walls of his village, Bhai Desa. He painted images and quotes about a host of topics like saving water and reducing plastic usage but the ones that particularly stood out were the murals of such popular leftist figures.
“I’ve read the writings of all these icons, and ultimately what’s in my head and heart is what will come out of my hand too, right?” said Balvir Singh. He said he has been a lifelong follower of Bhagat Singh and is also a communist and thus couldn’t hide his admiration for these revolutionaries. Unlike his other work that is spread all over the village, these murals are painted on the walls of Singh’s own home.
Singh, now 40, began reading Bhagat Singh’s writings at the age of 16, around the same time that his father died unexpectedly and he had to drop out of school to support his family. A few years later, he got involved with a movement against unemployment led by the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), the youth wing of the CPI. While he never became an official party member, he diligently involved himself in the party’s activities, which ranged from speeches to protests and demonstrations.
“No one in my friend circle became official members of the party, but we were involved in the movement. We would go among the people and talk about employment, about our deteriorating conditions. We used to fill up buses and go to protests,” said Balvir Singh.
Specifically, he helped organise yearly demonstrations on Bhagat Singh’s birthday on September 28. “In 2007, on Bhagat Singh’s centenary, I painted his photos all over Punjab. I want the people of Punjab to remember Bhagat Singh. Just like we celebrate Holi and Diwali as major festivals, we should also be celebrating Bhagat Singh’s birthday,” said Balvir Singh.
Even though Bhagat Singh remains a beloved figure in the region, his ideas of socialism and revolution don’t garner the appeal they once did here. Jagtar Singh, a Punjabi Tribune journalist who was also involved with the AIYF agitation in the late 90s, said “There was a time when Communists were very popular in the state. In fact, they had a stronghold in Mansa (the district that Bhai Desa village is situated in). But right now, they’re struggling to maintain their very existence.”
In 1977, CPI and CPI(M) had a total of 15 seats in the state assembly, testifying to their support. The state has also produced firebrand leftist leaders like Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who served as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) from 1992 to 2005, and Satyapal Dang, who represented the CPI in the state legislative assembly for four terms. Additionally, the Naxalite movement also took root in the state, and influenced prominent writers and artists like Paash, Laal Singh Dil and Gursharan Singh.
Anand Patwardhan’s documentary, In Memory of Friends or ‘Una Mitran Di Yaad Pyaari’, set in the late 80s when the Khalistani movement that demanded a separate homeland for Sikhs was at its peak, showed how communists played a prominent role in fighting communal violence against Hindus as well as state violence against Sikhs. Some party activists like Jaimal Singh Padda even lost their lives at the hands of Khalistani militants. Since then, however, they have declined There are no active MLAs from left parties and the Naxalite movement has also virtually disappeared from the region.
There are several reasons for this decline, with the first being increasing factionalism in the left. “By 2002, the CPM had split into CPM and CPM (Punjab), which affected its electoral fortunes rather badly.” writes Professor Chaman Lal, a retired JNU professor.
In an interview with The Wire, Lal added, “Even now left-leaning groups like Bharat Kisan Union have some hold among the peasant working class of Punjab. But the problem again is that these groups are also divided into factions. Moreover, these radical organisations often opt to stay out of parliamentary politics, and instead they participate in mass resistance only for minor reliefs like financial support for farmers and so on.”
Others attribute the Left’s present absence to its perceived image as a foreign movement that was vehemently opposed to religion. Bhupinder Singh Mann, a Mansa-based author and educator, said, “Words like proletariat and bourgeois have had a negative impact on left politics. People perceived communism as a movement from elsewhere and didn’t want to join it for that reason.” He added, “They thought that Communists stand for ‘qaum nasht’ (‘community destruction’), and that they will destroy the Sikh qaum.”
According to Sukhdarshan Singh Natt, a Mansa-based senior leader of the CPI(ML) Liberation, “Part of the reason for the Left’s decline in Punjab is that older parties like the CPI actually supported the Emergency instituted by Indira Gandhi, hence maligning the image of all leftists in Punjab.” Jaspal Singh Sidhu, a Chandigarh based writer, argues that the political positions of prominent leftist parties did not differ from “bourgeois” parties like the Congress and the BJP in that they all reinforced the idea of the Indian nation-state.
This does not mean that the ideology has totally vanished. Every year in November, various progressive thinkers and leaders congregate at the ‘Mela Ghadari Babeiyan Da’ (‘Fair of Ghadar Veterans’), held at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall in Jalandhar, Punjab. The programme consists of talks, discussions and performances of revolutionary songs and poetry by renowned artists. Progressive literature, translated into Punjabi, is sold at at affordable prices.
Balvir Singh visits the mela each year with his comrades, including journalist Jagtar Singh, and returns home with a pile of literature and books. It was through the ‘Mela Ghadari Babeiyan Da’ that he learned about Che Guevara and Lenin and what they stood for. He has their framed photos and quotes hung up all over the walls of his office, alongside Bhagat Singh’s.
Students politics at Punjab University present a ray of hope for the Left in the state. In 2018, 22-year old Kanupriya of the left-leaning SFS (Students for Society) made history by becoming the first woman president of Punjab University. She won on the platform of opposing fee hikes, increasing commercialisation of education and deteriorating conditions of hostel and mess workers.
CPIML’s Sukhdarshan Singh Natt said that stories like Kanupriya’s keep him and others motivated to continue doing their work. He said, “Punjab University elections are similar to elections in the state in that votes are bought with money. But, SFS won the elections based on its manifesto and on ground work. While University elections don’t have a lot of impact on the ground, it’s heartening to know that it’s possible to influence people and win on the basis of integrity.”
According to Professor Lal, the present time is quite ripe for a resurgence of the left, but that can only happen if leftists are able to form a joint front and oppose fascist forces. He said, “The coronavirus pandemic has exposed the Indian class situation to the crudest level – the whole facade and illusion of a welfare state has been completely exposed. The Left movement can make an impact if it has organisational strength and a clear view of how to organise the most oppressed unorganised working class”.

About God, Bhagat Singh writes:
He (God) was to serve as a father, mother, sister and brother, friend and helper… so that when man be in great distress having been betrayed and deserted by all friends, he may find consolation in the idea that an ever true friend was still there to help him, to support him and that He was Almighty and could do anything. Really that was useful to a society in the primitive age. The idea of God is helpful to man in distress. (Prison Diary of Bhagat Singh)
He further wrote that “All religions and creeds are the props of tyrannical and exploiting institutions, men and classes”. He agreed with Bertrand Russell that religion is “a disease born of fear and a source of untold misery to the human race”.
He argued that “Any man who stands for progress has to criticise, disbelieve and challenge every item of the old faith … If after considerable reasoning one is led to believe in any theory or philosophy, his faith is welcomed... His reasoning can be mistaken, wrong, misled and sometimes fallacious. But he is liable to correction because reason is the guiding star of his life … mere faith and blind faith is dangerous; it dulls the brain, and makes a man reactionary.”

😭"what are the biggest challenges writing your WIPs?"
OMG! First of all: Thank you for sending me an ask!
To answer your question: Research.
One of the projects I'm working on is a Wuxia type story set in India (I don't think there is a specific term for this. I suppose fantasy is a thing. But given the Indian fantasy novels I've read, this really isn't it. It does fit more into the Wuxia concept than Western Fantasy concept.)
Anyway, in my experience whether it's a Western Fantasy or Chinese Fantasy, the information is really widely available. Either in the form of other shows or just youtube videos. Not to say there are no channels about Indian history but it's mostly just about the kings and wars and shit. I have watched hundred of videos and I'm yet to find anything that talks about the common people or the business people, day in their life style. [My protagonists being 1) a brother and sister from a merchant family and 2) a pair of brothers from a minor noble family (in english terms they would be a lord level person)]
So far, I'm like fuck it we ball but without a reference point to work from it's really messy.
One thing I did fit into place recently is this: I have a characters who is inspired by Karna from Mahabharat and I was reading about the Indian Independence Movement. So I combined those two elements. Karna - the man born with abilities to rival the ruling class and Bhagat Singh's backstory. (I didn't want 'Karna' to be 'able' because he is actually from the right class/caste or people. I wanted him to be angry at the existence of this discrimination.)
Honestly it's just hard to guess which parts I'm wrong about given how complex and at time contradictory the myths are. I view Karna as misunderstood, the text views him as a traitor but other texts view him as something else. It's just exhausting because at the end of the day you will piss someone off. I can guarantee you that much.

March 23, 1931: The Martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru
Sure, here’s a fuller account of the events surrounding March 23, 1931:
March 23, 1931: The Martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru
March 23, 1931, marks a significant moment in the history of India’s struggle for independence from British rule. On this day, three revolutionary freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, were executed by hanging in Lahore Central Jail.
Bhagat Singh, born on September 28, 1907, in a small village in Punjab, was deeply influenced by the political turmoil of his time. He became actively involved in the struggle for independence from a young age, joining the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), a revolutionary organization dedicated to overthrowing British rule through armed resistance.
On December 17, 1928, Bhagat Singh and his associates orchestrated the assassination of British police officer John Saunders in retaliation for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, a prominent freedom fighter who had died from injuries sustained during a protest against the Simon Commission. However, it was mistakenly Saunders who was targeted instead of the actual assailant.
In a daring act of defiance, Bhagat Singh and his comrades threw pamphlets and shouted slogans after the killing, declaring their intent to seek retribution for the injustices inflicted upon their countrymen by the British authorities. Following the incident, Bhagat Singh and his associates went into hiding, becoming folk heroes and symbols of resistance against British oppression.
However, their underground activities came to an end on April 8, 1929, when Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi to protest against the repressive laws enacted by the British government. Though their intention was not to cause harm but to attract attention to their cause, the act resulted in their arrest.
During their imprisonment, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru continued to advocate for India’s independence, engaging in hunger strikes and writing powerful letters and essays that captured the imagination of the Indian masses.
Despite widespread protests and calls for clemency, the British authorities remained steadfast in their decision to execute the three revolutionaries. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were led to the gallows in Lahore Central Jail, where they met their martyrdom with courage and dignity.
The sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru galvanized the Indian independence movement, inspiring countless others to join the struggle for freedom. Their legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of millions of Indians, serving as a reminder of the indomitable spirit of those who dare to dream of a better tomorrow.

Please read below more Information about Sikh Kara:
A kara (Punjabi: ਕੜਾ (Gurmukhi), کڑا (Shahmukhi) कड़ा (Devanagari)), is a steel or iron (sarb loh) bracelet, worn by all initiated Sikhs. It is one of the five kakars or 5Ks — external articles of faith — that identify a Sikh as dedicated to their religious order. The kara was instituted by the tenth Sikh guru Gobind Singh at the Baisakhi Amrit Sanskar in 1699. Guru Gobind Singh Ji explained:
He does not recognise anyone else except me, not even the bestowal of charities, performance of merciful acts, austerities and restraint on pilgrim-stations; the perfect light of the Lord illuminates his heart, then consider him as the immaculate Khalsa.
The kara is to constantly remind the Sikh disciple to do God's work, a constant reminder of the Sikh's mission on this earth and that he or she must carry out righteous and true deeds and actions, keeping with the advice given by the Guru. The Kara is a symbol of unbreakable attachment and commitment to God. It is in the shape of a circle which has no beginning and no end, like the eternal nature of God. It is also a symbol of the Sikh brotherhood. As the Sikhs' holy text the Guru Granth Sahib says "In the tenth month, you were made into a human being, O my merchant friend, and you were given your allotted time to perform good deeds." Similarly, Bhagat Kabir reminds the Sikh to always keep one's consciousness with God: "With your hands and feet, do all your work, but let your consciousness remain with the Immaculate Lord."
The basic kara is a simple unadorned steel bracelet, but other forms exist. It was historically used like a knuckle-dusterfor hand-to-hand combat. Battlefield variations include kara with spikes or sharp edges. Sikh soldiers of the British Indian army would settle disputes by competing in a form of boxing known as loh-musti (lit. iron fist) with a kara on one hand.
P.S. Colour of item may slightly vary due to camera flash and light conditions. Some Karas may have negligible small black grinding mark on the kara joint. This is always seen on all karas as most of the Kara making/shaping work is done by hands. However, this do not affect the quality/look of Karas.
Brilliant finish and very decorative. Ideal gift item for loved ones on any Occasion.
Postage discounts for multi-buys.

Some notable hindi novelist in present time
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, there were several notable Hindi novelists who were actively writing contemporary fiction. However, I do not have information on authors who have gained prominence or started writing after that date. Some Hindi novelists who were well-known up to 2021 include:
1. Chetan Bhagat: Known for bestsellers like "Five Point Someone" and "2 States."
Tumblr media
2. Amish Tripathi: Famous for the "Shiva Trilogy" and "Ram Chandra Series."
Tumblr media
3. Durjoy Datta: Known for novels like "Of Course, I Love You" and "The Boy Who Loved."
Tumblr media
4. Ravinder Singh: Author of "I Too Had a Love Story" and "Your Dreams Are Mine Now."
Tumblr media
5. Preeti Shenoy: Known for books like "Life Is What You Make It" and "The Secret Wish List."

Day 1
I am writing this to remind myself some learnings-
think yourself as a human born 200 years back who follow the respected persons of the society instead of fucking influencers... you are their business, they are not your caretakers , wellwishers, it is their duty to fuck you up
so start putting yourself in the places of the persons who were born back , someone like benjamin franklin, abraham lincoln, mahatma gandhi, bhagat singh.....don't pay even a little bit attention to small bullshits whereas start focusing, loving things which make you grow , develop
you know your heart wants to read that godamn book fountainhead and live it but your ability stops you ....increase it
you have learnt things
and you can still learn
in a better way now
treat that fucking exam like the doomsday of your life .... it does not matter whether you like it or not .... you have to save yourself from the enemies ...you have no option left ....it is a matter of life and death now.....either victory will be yours or you will die ...or worst case you will regret and comdemn yourself again and again ....your self respect will decline by a major....want to repeat the same cycle again?

It was in the early 20th century that Punjabis studying in the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, London and California began to interact with Western thought. The poet Puran Singh (1881-1931) engaged Nietzsche in Punjabi; the great lexicographer Kahan Singh (1861-1938) collaborated with Macauliffe (1837-1913) on the English translation of the Sikh scriptures for his 6-volume magnum opus The Sikh Religion; the Greek and Sanskrit scholar Dharam Anant [Singh] worked on Plato while Santokh Singh (1892-1927) introduced Marx to Punjab.
Bhai Santokh Singh, a Ghadar activist and one of the founders of the communist movement in Punjab, was tried with 29 other Ghadarites in the Indo-German or San Francisco Hindu Conspiracy Case and sentenced to 21 months rigorous imprisonment. In the McNeil’s Island prison, he came in contact with other political inmates, many of them Russian communist exiles, and began to read leftist books, including the three volumes of Capital. After his release, he travelled to the Soviet Union, where he enrolled in the KUTV – University of the Toilers of the East. After returning to Punjab, he started Kirti (The Worker) in 1926, a Punjabi magazine.
In its first issue, dated February 1926, he published a short introductory article on Dialectical and Historical Materialism. The essay was also an important milestone in the development of Punjabi literary and political prose. Prior to this, historical and political texts – even the traditional medicine formulae – were written in poetry. Given the lack of an established Punjabi tradition of economic and philosophical discourse, Santokh Singh relied on Sanskrit for introducing new philosophical terms into Punjabi.
Dwarka Das Library, which shifted from Lahore to Delhi to Chandigarh after Partition, has in its collection the first English edition of Capital (1887). It is a fair conjecture that Bhagat Singh would have accessed it. In his memoir, Yash ki Dharohar (Heritage of Honour, 1988), Bhagwan Das Mahaur, an accomplice of Bhagat Singh, writes that he had read Capital on the suggestion of Bhagat Singh, but could not comprehend it. Bhagat Singh’s Jail Notebooks include quotes from the writings of Marx and Engels.
Makhan Singh (1913-1973) a whole-timer of the CPI during 1939-1947, spent his time in translating some parts of Marx’s Das Kapital into Punjabi in the Gurmukhi script. In 1942, Jagjit Singh Anand, an editor of Jang-e-Azadi, the CPI organ, received Makhan Singh’s Punjabi translation of ‘Dialectical Materialism’, a chapter in Das Kapital. In his memoir, Anand recalled his deep impression of Makhan Singh’s nuanced grasp of Marxist theory as well as his mastery of the Punjabi language. The two men worked on the editorial board of Jang-e-Azadi until 1947, when Makhan Singh left Punjab for Kenya.
The editorial board of Jang-e-Azadi consisted of communist activists and pioneer Punjabi translators of Marxian literature, including Bhag Singh, a PhD in political science from Berkeley University, Teja Singh Sutantar, a legendary political leader and graduate of the University of the Toilers of the East Moscow, Sohan Singh Josh, Makhan Singh, Jagjit Singh Anand, and Randhir Singh.
In May 1937 a collection of articles on capitalism, imperialism and socialism published in Kirti was compiled by Harkishan Singh Surjeet. This 100-page book was titled ‘Purani te Navi Duniya’ (Old & the New World) by Sathi (Comrade) Karl Marx. It was the first Marxian text in Punjabi that was laden with the new terminology of economics and philosophy, not familiar to most Punjabi readers at the time. Most of the newly-coined terms stuck. But a hundred years later, there is still no consensus about certain words and concepts. For instance, the word ‘Capital’ can be translated both as ‘Poonji’ (origin Sanskrit) and ‘Sarmaya’ (origin Persian).
The first authentic Punjabi translation of Capital was published in 1975 by Navyug publishers, Delhi. The three volumes were translated by a team of fulltime employees of the Soviet Embassy’s Information Department. No other book by Marx except The Poverty of Philosophy was translated into Punjabi.
The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels was first translated into Punjabi in the Gurmukhi script by Randhir Singh and published in Lahore in 1946. It took over 70 years for its Punjabi version to appear in the Farsi script in Lahore translated by Mushtaq Soofi (Sanjh publications, 2022). A booklet about contemporary Marxism, titled Nirvar (The Analysis) was published by Rashid Uz Zaman in the Farsi script in Lahore in 1970. Unlike the East Punjabi translation, which largely relies on Sanskrit, Zaman’s translation borrows heavily from Arabic and Farsi. This duality of one language with two scripts and two dictions has been a serious bone of contention between academics, linguists and writers on both sides of the divided land of Punjab.

Dashing filmmaker Harish Shankar reunited with his favourite actor Pawan Kalyan this year for the second time after delivering an industry hit way back in 2012 with Gabbar Singh. The hit combination is back again for a powerful cop drama titled 'Ustaad Bhagat Singh'. Pawan commenced shooting for this crazy film a couple of weeks ago and already wrapped up a high-octane action sequence in the first schedule. A close source to the team revealed to us exclusively that there will be numerous dialogues in this film that target the current political dispensation in Andhra Pradesh. Harish Shankar has a penchant for writing trenchant and terse dialogues for lead characters in all his movies. With his favourite actor at the helm, Harish Shankar would further sharpen his pen and come up with more incisive and effective dialogues. He is making sure that these dialogues have political references aimed to give good mileage to Pawan ahead of the elections in 2024. In Gabbar Singh, Pawan Kalyan mouthed top-notch one-liners which were a rage after the film's release. One can expect an encore from Harish Shankar yet again with Ustaad Bhagat Singh. The film's shoot is likely to be wrapped up in the second half of this year and the makers are targeting early next year release. Happening beauty Sree Leela is the female lead in this film which is coming from the stables of Mythri Movie Makers. Devi Sri Prasad is rendering the soundtrack. #HarishShankar #MythriMovieMakers #PawanKalyan #UstaadBhagatSingh

AAFT Observed Martyrs Day on 23rd March
Tumblr media
On 23rd March, the Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT) observed Martyrs’ Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, in honor of the three Indian freedom fighters- Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, who were executed in 1931 for their contributions to India’s freedom struggle.
Dr. Sandeep Marwah, President of Marwah Studios and Chancellor of AAFT University, addressed the students of AAFT and highlighted the significance of this day. He emphasized that the sacrifice of these young Indians should inspire us to love our motherland and work towards its development.
Dr. Rajesh Badal, a renowned writer and poet who has written books on Bhagat Singh, shared some untold stories from his research on Bhagat Singh. He also recited some of Bhagat Singh’s writings, which left the audience amazed at the depth of his writing.
Satya Dev and Sushil Bharti, members of the Bhagat Singh Forum of AAFT, also spoke on the occasion, highlighting the relevance of the ideas and principles of Bhagat Singh in today’s world.
The event served as a reminder of the sacrifice made by the freedom fighters and their commitment to the cause of India’s independence. It also provided an opportunity for the younger generation to learn from their struggle and work towards building a better future for India. Later Dr. Marwah presented guests with membership of Bhagat Singh Forum. The event was supported by World Peace Development and Research Foundation.

Good Evening,Indian dismissd one criminals accued Home minister name Amit Shah 's characteristically blunt comment at a book release last week about the need to correct a flawed historical narrative is unlikely to be viewed to kindly by a section of the history establishment.Apart from the self serving belif the custody of the past is the sole preserve of professional historians ,there is a deep suspicion of attempts by political movements to mould the writing and dissemination of history. Unfortunately while such a wariness is understandable in principle, post -independence India has ,till very recently witnessed a convergence in the agenda of the history and political establishments. From the 1970s,when the pro-Indira Gandhi Left took it upon itself to impart history books and history departments with a secular bias, there has been unending conflict for the mastery of India's past .From disputes over the Aryan invasion to the characterisation of the freedom struggle aganist British rule, India's historiography is replete with bitter controversies.many of these disputes have spilled over into the political areana, the Ayodhya dispute being the most notable example of the past becoming a game-changer of the present . It is standerd for every generation to review the past in the light of their own values-a reason why Europe and North America are experiencing convulsions over the connection of erstwhile icons with slavery. In India too, thanks in no small measure to ham-handed attempts to over emphasis the role of Mahathma Gandhi and the Neharu family in the freedom struggle, there has been an understandable backlash. The re-discovery of political traditions that weren't wedded to non-violence has become a priority for the Narendra Modi government. The installation of Netaji Subhash Bose 's statue at the India gate canopy in Delhi formalised this correction of a one-sided narrative. To that extent ,Amit Shah's invocation of the stellar role also played by the likes of Aurobindo Ghose,Veer Savarkar,Bhagat Singh and the participants of the Chittagong armoury .... countin (at Mumbai, Maharashtra) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoIIYunp7T7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
