Love the art. Can't wait to see your version of the Plumbers' Kids (and Kevin's transformation), but it got me thinking. I know you retconned the Rooter retcon, in that they're not genetically modified hybrids, but how did they come to be?

It's hard to imagine an osmosian and a human creating an offspring considering they're completely different species, let alone a tetramand or a pyronite.

I have a whole system behind hybrids in Ben 10. For starters, quite a few aliens can have kids with each other naturally if they are close enough. So a tetramand and human, or even a kineceleran and human, can have kids, they just often have to be wary of issues that could arise. But the more unnatural a pairing is, the harder to have a kid is naturally, to the point that you get cases where they can't have a kid naturally. But there are many facilities that help via science to help parents have kids if they can't naturally. This is often taking the parents gamete cells, and raising the baby in a test tube like environment so they can control the entire process from the start, sometimes having to select specific genes to make sure the kid can live a healthy life. One of the most successful facilities is on Galvan Prime, run by a galvan doctor named Doctor Geno, she's a friend of Azmuth's sister. Of course there are limits to what aliens can have kids with each other, but as science grows each day, some things that were thought to be impossible have become possible, so you never know what could be made next. Hybrids also seem to function a 70/30 percent rule, in that they take after one species gene more than the other. E.g Helen is more kineceleran than human. Hybrids can only be two things as well, you can't get a big mix of many aliens in one alien. Though there are some that break these rules, like anodites and osmosians due to how their genetics work. So in terms of the plumber kids, ones like Helen and Manny were naturally made, though Alan was made via the science route when his parents went to one of these facilities. In terms of Kevin, since you mentioned osmosians, they behave more by inheriting powers. Due to osmosian having DNA absorption, it means a lot of them are able to have kids with many races, but their hybrids don't look like them. They will always look like the alien species their other parent is, beyond maybe getting minor things like eye or hair colour. What the kids inherit is the matter and energy absorption powers, though not really the DNA absorption (unless the omnitrix is involved lol). So they're kind of a changeling vibe with them. So Kevin looks entirely human, but as a hybrid as the powers.

AU where Carl is born a girl, named Carly. And has a half-alien son. Before she meets Sandra's alternate counterpart in this universe (named Alexander).

Carly was always the rebellious type. Even into her college days. So when she fell pregnant with the child of a night of binging so much she couldn't remember a thing, she knew she was in for it.

Frank was.. surprised. Didn't his younger sister know what protection was?? Was she serious!?

Natalie, Frank's fiance, didn't seem surprised in the slightest and had some.. shall we say, choice things she did NOT keep to herself. Frank didn't exactly stop Natalie, at first, but that was because she was saying some of the things on his mind.

Max? He was angry, shocked, but also supportive unlike Natalie and Frank. He knew that his kids had become distant since Frank and Natalie got together.. but the words leaving Natalie's mouth about Carly made Max wish that woman was a man, Frank's fiance be dammed.

Especially when Carly disappeared. No note, not a trace. This wasn't like Carly, who got herself out of every situation that was thrust upon her by her own hand or not. And then, after months of trying to find Carly by himself, Max got a call from a pay phone out in the middle of nowhere.

It was Carly. She was crying, saying she was sorry she ran off and that she was scared and begging Max to come get her because the alien she had been with had found her and wasn't too happy she was pregnant. And come get her he did, along with some Plumbers who were his back up.

Max nearly had a heart attack when he saw a Loboan chasing Carly. This was who she had been with?! Oh, great. That's perfect. Nice job, Carly. Real nice. Genuinely.

Well, nothing to do now but keep her in a Plumber safehouse for a while. And he had a favor owed to him, so he was taking advantage of it. And yeah.. things went well for a while. Max even approaching her about a job working with the Plumbers, seeing her interest in the old weapons around the warehouse and even her eye for fixing a few of them, after the birth of the baby. Carly said she'd take him up on it, but she wanted to finish college first even with the baby.

And then, on the new moon, Carly went into labor. Her son was born, healthy, named Aaron Maximus Tennyson. He looks like a human with werewolf features.

Frank and Natalie weren't around for any of Aaron's birthdays or anything, and it hurt Carly a lot. Aaron goes to school in Undertown (can't exactly go to school in Bellwood, can he?), and he has friends of aliens there and the more alien-like Plumber kids that attend the school which means Carly has a wider net of support too.

She met Alexander (male Sandra) during a shopping trip in Bellwood, getting supplies for Aaron's birthday. After that, the two met up more frequently. And eventually they start dating and then Alexander is introduced to Aaron. Who thought the boy was some kind of dog that learned to stand on it's hindlegs. And then, he learned the story and everything.

The two stood the test of time, in the end, and they got married. Had Benny around the time Gwen was born (Aaron was 9). Natalie and Frank said they would let Benny around Gwen, but had told the pair to keep Aaron away.

Benny loved her older brother. Gwen and Ken never got to know Aaron - Benny they knew, but this "older brother" was always a mystery.

Gwen met Aaron a few times

first when she was 10, after that summer

second she was 15-16, during Halloween at a family party

Ken met Aaron at Christmas, his parents were on a cruise that year. It was a shock, and Ken settled down after a few drinks of not safe for kids cider

Aaron is in the Plumber academy, taking after his mother and grandfather

I have two minds to answer this, because part of me is going 'WE GOT EM!!! WE GOT EM!!' While the other part of me is like 'oh god how do I tell them. Who’s going to tell them.' The easiest way I can explain: Tom, Ben, and Harry are not in a minecraft series together, and the lore that I have for them is not based in any actual series. HOWEVER. DON’T LET THE TRAGIC TRUTH MAKE YOU CLICK AWAY /silly so I can explain properly LMAO

Here’s a TLDR for anyone who likes these guys and is a lil interested in them!!

Most of the lore for these three is based on an amalgamation of inside jokes, non-minecraft character trends, and general yogs minecraft world lore!

Tom was an editor (now has a YouTube channel, AngoryTom) and did behind-the-scenes minecraft prep for the Yogscast for so long that he was never really interested in any actual "main channel" series besides [Dig Site - 10 episodes] with Simon, Lewis, and Ben, and [Skyblock - 2 episodes] with Ben! Although he’s also played several npcs throughout various main channel series since he was helping run the show lol. My take on his character is that he’s a former yoglabs employee due to [YOGLABS CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] and now lives his laziest life ever in an undisclosed remote location. He’s also the demigod of death but he’ll never tell

Ben started doing main series mc content a few years ago, but hasn’t done anything mc with Tom and Harry until recently (see below)! His character is a Shark Hybrid due to [YOGLABS CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] who now lives with Tom at the same undisclosed remote location.

Harry has been an insane speedrunning minecraft legend for ages, but was never in any main series content bc he’s actually a graphic designer for the yogs. But he was part of Iskall’s twitch vault hunter event back in November, and he’s now in the [Vault Hunter Series - Ongoing] with Ben and Duncan on YouTube! <3 so there’s plenty of mc content of Harry and Ben, but not so much Tom. c!Harry has lived remote for as long as he can remember, locked in Hardcore, until…?

But again, I base their backstories on a bunch of kinda loosely connected lore dots that are half based on jokes <3

Below the read more includes: links to clips, compilations, and very brief lore explanations (though you can check my other lore drawings in Tom’s tag (#Angory Tom), Ben’s tag (#bedgar), Harry’s tag (#brryhrry) or posts that have any of them, which should be under the (#the outcast trio) tag)!

BEN AND TOM

I’ve been in love with Ben and Tom as a duo forever, since the TTT (modded Trouble in Terrorist Town) days, where Ben’s player model was Left Shark, and Tom’s model was Emperor Palpatine (yes from Star Wars. I can’t stand them). But Ben and Tom have been yogs editors and Behind The Scenes guys forever, so it wasn’t until more recently that they became known personalities in the main yogscast circle (4-5 years is pretty recent in the 10+ years of yogs content timeline LMAO).

Through Warhammer streams and behind the scenes stuff, I kinda fell in love with their chemistry and idiocy, and they worked so well with the “main cast” that I just had to put them in the yogs minecraft universe, somewhere. Turns out, Tom had actually done a majority of the "behind the scenes" work for the Yoglabs series (he built a majority of the main building, did mod research and testing, was present during recordings to make sure things went well, stuff like that) so it only made sense to have his character be the Right Hand Man/ Behind The Scenes Assistant to Xephos (Lewis), the Morally Questionable Head of Yoglabs.

For anyone who’s unfamiliar with Yoglabs, it’s one of the yogs’ more famous series featuring Simon (Honeydew) and Lewis (Xephos) where they tested mods! more info can be found here!

c!Tom also ended up as a Lumian (the fanon alien space species for the yogs fandom, vaguely inspired by Star Trek Vulcans) because of a one-off joke where one of the Yogs artists drew him as a star trek commander, and I really didn’t need any further reason to make him a weird little guy LDKFJG

As far as the “demigod of death” thing goes, it felt right to give him a lore thing that vaguely coordinated with the whole “Emporer Palpatine” vibe, since that’s kinda the mc skin he’s used most recently. There’s another reason there that I don’t think I’ve properly explained, so I’ll leave the rest of that be for now ;]

Ben, on the other hand, plays a shark character in pretty much every video game he ever participates in, so shark hybrid was a pretty obvious way to go. And of course, since the duo had to be in the same place… involving Ben’s shark Hybrid-ness with yoglabs experimentation made good sense and good angst. What can I say :]

HARRY

Harry is kinda known as the yogscast’s token memelord? But in the ironic way. He somehow makes it genuinely hilarious idk man. His humor is very dry, witty, and sarcastic, but he’s a sweetheart and kind of a god at minecraft. I’ve been arguing since day one that this man should be in mcc but we won’t go there

There aren't many solo harry compilations, so here's a link to a Harry and Ben compilation hehe

Regarding his minecraft lore, pretty much all of it is based around the idea that he’s a god at speedrunning and hardcore Minecraft. A common consensus in yogscast minecraft lore is that respawning is actually a Yoglabs-based mechanic tied to clones and clone making. I thought it would be interesting if Harry could be tied to a hardcore element in the yogs lore purely by having Somehow slid under yoglabs’ radar. And since he was never in any main channel (aka modded) series, i usually associate him with Vanilla mechanics, and since i also view mods as a Yoglabs-related lore element, it made sense! So basically— no clones, no respawns, no mods!

except that he’s in a main channel series now. So I’ll need to find a new lore reason around that DTBJDFGHK

And his design, well… this man’s skin is straight up Mr Mime, and there’s only so much I can do with that /silly But he’s a HUGE Pokémon fan! He’s played a couple of Disaster Nuzlockes with Lydia from the yogs a year or so ago, if that’s something you’re interested in! Was a huge comfort series for me for the longest time and rly good background noise, theyre soooo good at Pokémon I promise <3

Harry does more twitch stuff (hrry on twitch) than youtube stuff, so twitch is the best place to check him out if you're interested in his solo content!

Last thing I'll say about him is that he designed and ran an original minecraft minigame called "Capture the Wool" and he and Martyn are the hosts for a few episodes i think! i dont think there's any way to explain how entertaining it is to listen to him announce the chaos of yogs members trying to play competitive minecraft LOL

Um, so. TLDR…2, These guys are basically my ocs and now I get Actual minecraft content from them which is crazy. I love them as content creators and cool guys so so much though, so! Definitely recommend listening to these idiots (affectionate) babble and ramble to each other, mc or not <3

So how did the other Ben's deal with their respective Zy'Skayrs? Like has Ben 23 dealt with him?

For all the Alt Bens their story with Zs'skayr depends on what Zs'skayr is up to in their timeline. I can sum up ideas I would have for alt Zs'skayr in each timeline

-Gwen 10- He's basically the same as the prime timeline, but now Gwen has to deal with him, sadly.

-Ben 23- Zy'skayr 23 never got into the omnitrix, instead he's been in a constant war/fight with Vilgax and his empire. I mentioned elsewhere that Vilgax 23 is just a dude trying to run his kingdom, so here he is expanding his empire against someone no one really likes, hoping to take control of the Anur System and help it in his own way. Of course, Zy'skayr does not like that one bit.

-Ben 10k- Similar to his Vilgax, he killed Zy'skayr a long while ago, another situation where a villain pushed things too far. Though thankfully not to the same degree as Vilgax had.

-No Watch- With no omnitrix, Zs'skayr mostly spent his time trying to cure his boredom elsewhere, and partly running his kingdom. He did have an encounter with this timeline's version of Azmuth, and loves to bring it up to rub it in his face.

-Omni Ben- Zs'skayr's escape from the watch was a little more complicated, and he knows he can't exactly possess Ben easily due to him being the omnitrix itself. But he finds Omni Ben to be fascinating, seeing how even a piece of tech can become so alive. He loves to see how Ben ticks, even via unpleasant means.

-Jen 10- The same as his prime counterpart, but now a female called Zs'feear. Still an awful being.

-Julie 10- Being that his timeline from escaping the watch happens during their version of the hybrid war, he tries to turn the tables in his favor by corrupting some DNAs and even a couple of highbreeds with corrodium. He also loves to torment Julie regarding her kindness and soft side.

-Sentient Omnitrix & Ben- Zs'skayr finds the whole thing interesting, and finds entertainment having discussions with the Omnitrix, finding ways to push her buttons. He knows very well she would be willing to kill him, but enjoys walking on the thin line.

-Rooters Ben- There was an entire situation where Zs'skayr infiltrated the Rooters, and it has left him as being high on the Rooters' hunting list. But he always finds a way to escape, living out in the Null Void to spread his own influence.

-Eon- Like everyone in his timeline, dead.

-Bad Ben- A soft, kind, and wandering ectonurite, having never fit in his monstrous planet of people, failing to keep them under his ruling as he didn't have it in him. He tried to possess Ben and the watch in hopes to gain power to do the right thing.

-Mad Ben- The Anur System got taken over by Vilgax a long while ago, but Zs'skayr slipped through the cracks and now wanders, doing his own thing, engaging with the chaos around him. While he does miss being king, he's not burdened enough to do much about it beyond screwing with Vilgax wherever he goes.

-Negative Ben- He decided to help Azmuth, becoming one of his assistance during the creation of the omnitrix, though it was clear he wasn't a great person either. Something sinister with him going behind the scenes, seeming to prefer using words to mentally mess with people, including Ben.

-Benzarro- Fused with Ben during a possession attempted gone wrong. He still calls himself Zs'skayr, but it's clear it's not exactly him anymore. Having a mix of him and Ben's personalizes.

-Malware Ben- Ben went to Zs'skayr once in a desperate attempt to try and get help removing Malware, and while Zs'skayr decided to give it a go due to being amused by Ben's pleading, he didn't calculate on Malware just storing him back into the omnitrix with high security measures in place.

-Forever Knight Ben- He watches the Knights and Vilgax's empire at war with each other, along with others involved, and does a lot of puppeting behind the scenes. He rarely shows himself, and people didn't know how involved he was for a long while.

-Fusion Ben- He is stuck within Ben's fusion, and has been trying to escape for a long while, however it seems his background influence makes things worse for him and Ben.

-Ultra Ben- It seems he's gone into hiding since catching word of Ben killing many of his villains, no one knows where he went, though there have Ben rumors and people thinking they see him, with Ben often investigating.

-Light Magic Ben- Something old, something clearly not a normal alien, Zs'skayr seems to be something similar to Dagon, but strangely there are no books or writing on him anywhere. He just merely exists, living in the shadows of Ledgerdomain.

(Sorry this chapter took so long.)

The three Tennysons were back in Washington D.C. and headed to the natural history museum. Gwen was thrilled, she always loved the chance to learn and further her knowledge. Jen was excited as well but would have much rather gone to the nearby writer's convention. Jen could have met some of her favorite authors and submitted one of her own stories to hopefully be published. Jen had been hoping for that chance but it just wasn't in the cards.

"We can go to the writer's convention later." Jen looked up from the book she was writing in and looked at her Grandpa. Jen smiled, "Ok," she said then returned to writing. Max smiled and then pulled into the museum parking lot. Jen closed her book and called Sully out from the back. "Jen, are you sure it's a good idea to bring him?" Gwen asked, she wasn't sure bringing a giant, creepy, shadow spider into the museum was a good idea. "It'll be fine Gwen, just look," Jen said turning her back to her cousin.

Sully was latched onto Jen's back but something was off. Sully was kinda see-through and slowly became more so until he was gone. "Whoa, what happened?" Gwen asked, reaching her hand out to where Sully should have been. "I made Sully out of a mixture of many spiders so he has many abilities, one of which being camouflage," Jen said right as Gwen's hand came in contact with Sully. "AHH!" Gwen pulled her hand back and Jen giggled, Max joined in then the group headed out of the RV.

While they walked into the museum Jen began to think about when she first came here. She and Gwen followed their Grandpa in even though he told them to wait outside. They saw their Grandpa fighting a mammoth and Dr.Animo was getting away. Jen and Gwen both chased after him but things didn't go as planned. Jen retreated from her thoughts and bumped Gwen with her hip to get her attention. Gwen looked at Jen, "Remember when we first came here?" she asked, a bright smile began to spread across Gwen's face. "That was one of the worst days of my entire life," Gwen said and Jen laughed.

An hour or two later Max, Jen, and Gwen stood with their tour group. They were looking at a dinosaur fissile while the tour guide listed various facts and other stuff. "Know, does anybody have a question?" the tour guide asked, a little kid raised his hand.

"What are those big spider-like spots on the skeleton?" the boy asked, the tour guide became puzzled and looked at the skeleton. Jen looked as well and her eyes widened in shock. Multiple Brown Recluse shadow spiders were dropping down from the ceiling and crawling down the skeleton. The tour guide along with the rest of the group screamed, as one of the spiders numbers down and hissed.

"Jen, what are you doing?" Gwen asked as she, Jen, and Max ran behind a corner. "It isn't me. These are someone else spiders." Jen said and quickly transformed. Max and Gwen did the same and the three ran out to protect everyone. Max and Gwen began fighting the spiders and Jen escorted everyone to safety, but the spiders began to follow. "Arachnid, behind you!" Max called as he followed after the spiders with Gwen.

Jen looked back and saw the army of deadly spiders following her. "Fuck," Jen said then she got an idea. "Sully, mega-size," Jen ordered and Sully jumped off her back and Gree in size. Jen quickly jumped on Sully's back, "Take us to the roof." she ordered. Sully hissed and scaled a nearby wall to the glass ceiling and crawled out. The spider followed and crawled onto the roof with Jen.

"I'm gonna make this quick," Jen said and her shadow began to expand. As Jen's shadow stretched further and further the spider began to sink into it. The spider hissed and began to retreat but Jen sent Sully after them and he knocked them into Jen's still-growing shadow. Jen's shadow kept growing and Jen groaned in pain, she had never stretched her shadow this far before. "Almost...there." Jen groaned as a drop of blood began to peek from her left nostril.

"RAAAAGGHHHH!!!" a roar erupted from behind Jen and something crashed into her back. Jen was sent flying across the roof before crashing through it. Sully quickly made a web and caught Jen. Jen groaned and sat up, wiping the blood from her nose Jen looked up. There was a figure on the roof fighting Sully while creating shadow spiders that began to fill the building. "Fuck," Jen said and Jumped from Sully's web and created a few Hobo spiders to fight with her. Jen grits her teeth and sent the spider to attack and pulled a weapon from a nearby display.

Jen began to slice the spiders in half but they just kept filling the room. "So many spiders... too many spiders!!" Jen was swarmed by the spiders and lost control letting her spiders vanish.

"GET OFF OF HER!!" a pink mana blast hit the spiders freeing Jen. Max swooped down as a red alien with wings and yellow lips and pulled Jen from the ground. Jen gasped and panted, the spiders had been suffocating her. "Thanks for the save," Jen said and Gwen and Max nodded. Jen looked around the room and then back up to the roof. "Grandpa, throw me up," Jen ordered and Max obliged, trusting his granddaughter.

Jen landed on the roof and got the figure's attention. The figure turned to Jen, they were dressed in a dark cloak that covered their face, and a pair of black pants. The person left their chest exposed revealing they were male. "So, you are the one the power was given to," he said in a rough, deep, squeaky voice that made Jen cringe. "Not sure what you mean, and I don't care either," Jen said and created an army of black widow spiders behind the man. "AGH!!" the man was buried under a spider and he let out another roar.

The spiders in the museum began to swarm to the roof to help their master. Jen jumped on Sully's back and watched as a fight broke out before the man retreated. The man ran away and his spiders vanished. Jen called her spiders back and headed back inside where Max and Gwen were waiting. "Who was that?" Max asked, but Jen just shook her head. The three stood in silence for a moment before anyone spoke again. "Let's change and get outta here. Something tells me the museum is gonna be closing early." Mac said and Jen and Gwen nodded.

A few hours later the family sat in a nearby RV park. Max was cooking dinner, Gwen was on her computer, and Jen was writing in her notebook with Sully camouflaged in her lap. Everything was relaxing and peaceful, that was a first for the family.

"Sorry we couldn't go to the convention today Jen," Max said breaking the silence that had settled. Jen looked away from her notebook, "It's ok Grandpa, there will be other conventions." Jen said with a smile. Max smiled back and returned his attention to the grill. Silence settled again but was quickly ruined by the sound of sirens. A bunch of police cars and ambulances drove past the park, toward the convention center. "What on earth?" Gwen asked and Jen pulled up the news on her phone.

"Numerous reports of giant spiders at the local convention center have occurred. Law enforcement is on the case and people are encouraged to avoid the convention center." the reporter said and Jen furrowed her brows. Jen didn't say a word and ran off toward the convention center. As she ran Sully mega-sized and Jen jumped on his back.

At the convention center, hundreds of people sat terrified. They were caught in giant webs with hissing, drooling spiders closing in on them. Standing in the center of all of it was the man from earlier. "The sooner I get Arachnid, the sooner this shall end," he said and received a hard kick at the back of the head that sent him flying. "I'm right here." the man regained himself and looked up at Jen, now in her Arachnid persona.

"Good, now you are coming with me!" he roared and charged at Jen. Jen jumped and dodged creating four giant Redback spiders that pounced on the man. The spiders that surrounded the people quickly left to assist their master, and that was just what Jen wanted.

Once the spiders were close enough Jen had her spiders pounce on them and she attacked the man. Jen sent him flying and the hood of his cloak fell off revealing his face. Jen went wide-eyed and stared in shock, she almost couldn't believe what she was seeing. The man had the head and face of a Joro spider. Jen never thought she would see someone like this again.

"Who are you?" Jen asked, the man stood to his feet. "My name is Tatsuya, and you are coming with me!" he yelled and charged at Jen. Jen was quick to dodge and created a Forked pirate spider and sent it at Tatsuya. The spider jumped on Tatsuya's face and Jen took the chance to disable him some more. Jen ran and slid, she slide right into Tatsuya's bare feet with an extended leg. "AGH!" Tatsuya roared in pain and fell to the ground and Jen noticed something.

While Tatsuya was in pain, his spiders failed to fight. "What the heck?" Jen asked and looked back at Tatsuya. Jen took notice of the red jewelry hanging around his neck. Jen furrowed her brow and while Tatsuya was in pain Jen snatched the jewelry from around his neck. "No, give that back." "Sully," Sully jumped down and held Tatsuya in place while Jen examined the jewelry. The red stone glowed brightly in Jen's hand and she saw Tatsuya's spider stand at attention.

It didn't take a genius to figure out that this is where Tatsuya's power was coming from. "No, give that back. You don't know how important it is. Give it back." Tatsuya pleaded, but Jen didn't have a reason to trust him. "Nah, I think I'll hold onto it for a while," Jen said and walked over to Tatsuya and kicked him in the head knocking him unconscious. Jen then put the necklace on and disposed of all the spiders.

Max and Gwen stood outside the convention center unable to get in due to police. "Grandpa what do we do?" Gwen asked, Max wasn't sure at all and decided they could only hope. A few moments later an army of terrified people burst through the doors and police began to go inside. Jen was amongst these people and quickly made her way to Gwen and Max.

"How did you get inside?" Max asked, happy to see Jen ok. "I scaled the wall with one of my spiders." Jen said pointing to an alley. "And where did that come from?" Gwen asked pointing to the necklace. Jen hummed, "I'll tell you on the way back to the RV park." Jen said and the three headed to the RV.

Max and Gwen shared a look, they couldn't believe what Jen just told them. "He was the one back at the museum and he said something about my power. Something about it being given to me." Jen said and looked between Gwen and Max.

"What do you think he meant by that?" Gwen asked, but Jen could only shake her head. Max hummed, "We can never have a normal summer." he said and Jen and Gwen began to laugh.

The Squadron Supreme, or How Man of Action Studios showed how stupid power scaling contests really are

Man of Action Studios, for all their flaws, have a remarkable understanding of the superhero genre and what makes heroes compelling. I could go on and on about their original shows like Ben 10 and Generator Rex, on how they always make sure that their heroes prioritize the safety of civilians over their mission or their own safety, how they use the posture, movements, and behavior of the heroes as a way to show how the hero views himself and his job, and other such things. Indeed, I already have done both of those in brief. But I think one of the best examples of their grasp on the genre actually comes from the Avengers Assemble cartoon, which they worked on during seasons 1 and 2 (the absence in season 3 onwards is actually kind of noticeable in the sudden drop in quality).

In season 2, Avengers Assemble does something that by all accounts shouldn't work, something that under normal circumstances I would ABSOLUTELY HATE. they had an Avengers versus Justice League plot arc for a third of the season. Personally, I hate power-scaling. "Oh this guy can beat that guy! Let's smash our action figures together and see which one breaks!" But despite this, they managed to make it work. How?

Obviously the show couldn't bring in the real justice league for legal reasons, so instead they made obvious parallels. Hyperion, a twisted version of Superman, had already been introduced in season 1. Nighthawk was their version of Batman, Zarda was their version of Wonder Woman, Speed Demon was their version of The Flash (clearly taking inspiration from the Barry Alan iteration), and Nuke was their version of Captain Atom. Interestingly, Professor Prism seems to be a hybrid of Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter in origin and powers respectively.

HOWEVER

these characters are VERY MUCH NOT their actual justice league counterparts. Nor are they "mirror images" of them with opposite traits. But they are those characters with all of their heroic traits carefully, surgically removed.

The Squadron Supreme, as they call themselves, are the justice league without justice, heroes without heroics. They disdain the rule of law, instead favoring the rule of terror, taking justice into their own hands, beating the living daylights out of people who cross them. Hyperion, unlike superman, has no restraint. Speed Demon revels in tormenting his opponents. Nuke uses his powers at will despite knowing the danger they pose to everyone around him. Zarda kulls the weak to demonstrate her power. Professor Prism cowers behind the others, and bends to their will with little resistance despite ultimately being a good person. And nighthawk.

Nighthawk is the most telling of the bunch. He is the "batman could beat anyone given enough prep time" version of batman. He is the "actually batman should be totally fine killing people" version of batman. He is the "batman works alone and beats up goons" version of batman. He is the juvenile version of batman as thought of by power-scalers and, apparently, Hollywood executives. In other words, he is an ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE PERSON, and one of the most dangerous foes ever introduced in the series. He uses his friends as living weapons, deliberately endangers civilians to try to take out the heroes, and beats criminals within an inch of their life to send a message. Trying to fight his plans is like trying to hold back a tsunami with your hands; time consuming and futile.

They say that if you can't imagine your version of batman comforting a scared child, he's not batman, but punnisher in a funny mask. well nighthawk would fire a rocket at a child if it was part of his many unstoppable schemes. He's a monster.

You would expect, since the show is about the Avengers, that the Avengers would wipe the floor with the Squadron. But nope. All other things being equal, the Squadron ABSOLUTELY WIPES THE FLOOD WITH THE AVENGERS. Iron Man gets into a fight with Nighthawk, only for nighthawk to completely dismantle his armor in seconds, and the rest of the Avengers can barely take down Hyperion if they all gang up on him, let alone the other members of the squadron. They are just too powerful; it is essentially an admission that in a straight fight between the two, the Justice League would win.

But it is also a statement that in order for the fight to occur at all, the Justice League would have to cease to actually be the justice league. they would have to be reduced to their powers and strategies, with all that is good about them thrown in the trash.

Ultimately, what allows the avengers to win in the end is this exact fact: that the Squadron AREN'T actually the Justice League. The members of the Justice League care about each other, and have each-others back. They would never willingly sacrifice each-other for the sake of a plan, even if that plan assured victory. But the Squadron ABSOLUTELY would. Ultimately they are able to isolate them, or convince Nighthawk to sacrifice them one-by-one for his schemes until they finally have an opening to finish things, and Iron Man manages to defeat Nighthawk not through fighting or even guile, but through making an act of self-sacrifice that Nighthawk couldn't rap his head around.

The Squadron Supreme shows what traits actually make up the Justice League and make them who they are by contrast; showing us what the characters would be like without those traits. Without compassion, restraint, empathy, friendship, the Justice League simply isn't itself.

To think this insight came from an Avengers cartoon instead of a DC property.

Anyways, that is why I think Man of Action Studios deserves a bit more credit for their writing.
