"Batman and Religion: A History" - Berlin's Batman: A Fight Against Anti-Semitism: We see Batman embracing another religious practice and culture in Paul Pope's Elseworlds story "Berlin Batman", originally published in The Batman Chronicles (Vol 1) 11 from 1998 illustrated by Pope, Ted McKeever and Ken Lopez. Paying homage to the Dark Avenger's debut in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 27 in 1939, the setting is 1939 Berlin where we meet artist and rich socialite (and Jewish man) Baruch Wane speaking with Komissar Garten who informs him he is tracking down Austrian Jew Ludwig Von Mises and if Baruch would be interested in using his cubism to create a piece for der Führer, which he declines. As Komisser leaves to track down Von Mises, Wayne's companion named Robin asks to aid him on this mission, but Wane says to wait until the Spring. As he suits up as the Batman and grapples towards the train yard, he flashes back to the murder of his Jewish family by angry anti semites. After their deaths, he trained his mind in school (which stopped him from being made fun of because he was a Jew) and his body until one night in his study, a huge bat flew through the window, inspiring him to become a creature of the night, the Batman. Batman makes it to the train track and while he couldn't psychically stop the trains with Ludwig's writings, he was able to ruin the railroad tracks. The ending has Baruch's mentor reading her memoirs about Ludwig's success of writing literature that challenged the Nazi Party's economical stance, being the forefront of libertarian acts, which the Berlin Batman stood for as well. Berlin's Batman will continue to fight injustice in any form. ✌🏼💙🦇🙏🏼
