FRENZY

Se ha dicho que FRENZY (1972) representa, en la obra de Hitchcock, un retorno a los orígenes, una vuelta al cine que hacía en su país natal, antes de emigrar a Estados Unidos y convertirse en un cineasta americano. El "regreso aéreo" a Londres que constituye el genérico de FRENZY, la muy británica música de Ron Goodwin, el sabroso ambiente londinense que describe (los pubs, el mercado de Covent Garden, Picadilly, Leicester Square), el equipo técnico y artístico íntegramente inglés y el espléndido y macabro humorismo que baña casi todas sus secuencias, parecen corroborar tal afirmación.

Sin embargo, es radicalmente falso, fundamentalmente erróneo el pretender que existe entre FRENZY y películas como THE RING (1927), BLACKMAIL (1929), LOS 39 ESCALONES (1935), SABOTAGE (1936), o THE LADY VANISHES (1938) un mayor parentesco que entre estas y otras americanas, como REBECA (1940), NOTORIOUS (1946), THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955), VERTIGO (1958), PSICOSIS (1960) o CORTINA RASGADA (1966). Por el contrario, FRENZY es la lógica y, hasta cierto punto previsible culminación del nuevo estilo abordado por Hitchcock en LOS PÁJAROS (1963), explorado en CORTINA RASGADA y dominado ya en la incomprendida y magistral TOPAZ (1969). Para apoyar esta tesis bastará comparar el uso estructural del SUSPENSE en FRENZY y en otra película cuyo tema central es el del falso culpable, THE WRONG MAN (1956).

En el más antiguo de estos dos films, se nos presenta al protagonista, Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero (Henry Fonda), desde las primeras imágenes, para no abandonarle ya prácticamente nunca. Los personajes del drama son pocos: en rigor, Balestrero, su esposa Rose (Vera Miles), un abogado (Anthony Quayle), un detective y la entrevista silueta del verdadero culpable. En ningún momento dudamos de la inocencia de Balestrero: sabemos por qué ha ido a la agencia de seguros, que es una buena persona (la mera lección de Henry Fonda para interpretar su personaje nos convence de su honestidad), que no robó nada; nos inquieta que sospechen de él, y vemos que sus delatoras son unas histéricas irresponsables; compartimos su humillación ante la rutinaria desconfianza de la policía; tememos como él por la salud de Rose; nos abruma también la fatídica acumulación de circunstancias adversas que lo acusan; deseamos su libertad casi tanto como él. En resumen, Hitchcock ha logrado, unificando nuestro punto de vista con el suyo, que nos identifiquemos con Balestrero desde el primer momento al último.

Veamos, en cambio, que ocurre en FRENZY. Lo primero que Hitchcock nos presenta, y con no poca ironía, es el "cuerpo del delito": una mujer, desnuda y estrangulada con una corbata, que flota por el Támesis. Poco después conocemos a un tal Richard Ian Blaney (Jon Finch, actor poco conocido y no especialmente simpático: "nada ideal"), personaje un tanto amargado, poco trabajador, de temperamento violento e inestable, no muy de fiar. Poco a poco vamos percatándonos —no sin cierta alarma— de que Blaney va a ser el protagonista del film, y de que su comportamiento es un tanto sospechoso —no para algún personaje del film, sino para nosotros, sus espectadores—. Mientras tanto, tomamos contacto con otros personajes; la feúcha pero simpática Babs Milligan (Anna Massey), su novia; el simpático y despreocupado Robert Rusk (Barry Foster), su mejor amigo; la resignada y bondadosa Brenda (Barbara Leigh-Hunt), su ex-esposa. No lo sabemos, pero hemos conocido ya al verdadero culpable y a sus dos próximas víctimas. De pronto, Hitchcock nos hace identificarnos con Brenda, y ya sabemos qué va a ocurrir. A los 26 minutos de proyección podemos darnos cuenta de quién es el asesino de la corbata, y cuatro minutos más tarde Hitchcock nos desvela ya la identidad del culpable: vemos cómo Rusk asesina a Brenda, y nos identificamos por fin con Blaney, seguros de su inocencia, cuando todo empieza a acusarle (esta parte sigue un esquema muy semejante al del inicio de THE WRONG MAN). A partir de entonces nos vemos más y más identificados con Blaney, y con él padecemos el acoso al que se ve sometido. Con él huimos, nos ocultamos y tememos hasta que, de pronto, Hitchcock nos lleva a compartir las andanzas de la leal Babs, que intenta ayudar a Blaney a huir al Continente y que, como todo el mundo, confía en Rusk. Dada que nuestra simpatía por Babs es mayor de la que sentíamos por Brenda, Hitchcock nos ahorra esta vez el espectáculo de su muerte, dejando que la impresión causada por el anterior crimen se descargue sobre nuestra imaginación durante una elipsis ya famosa y que no tiene nada de "brillante ejercicio de estilo", y sí mucho de necesario y magistral tour de force. Con el asesinato de Babs nuestra intranquilidad crece —pues si Hitchcock permite la muerte de un personaje así es que todo puede suceder, como en PSICOSIS tras la inesperada eliminación de Janet Leigh—, y Blaney pierde la posibilidad de huir y una aliada fiel; lo peor es que también la muerte de Babs le hace parecer sospechoso, y encima nos damos cuenta, con desesperación, de que sólo le queda ya una persona en la que confía lo bastante como para buscar su ayuda: Bob Rusk, el asesino.

Por si no fuese bastante la inseguridad que ha sembrado ya en nosotros, Hitchcock complica aún más nuestra posición moral en el film: tras habernos hecho sospechar de un inocente, confiar en un asesino y padecer con dos víctimas y con el falso culpable, nos hace ahora identificarnos con el asesino. En efecto, desarrollando una idea que tuvo durante el rodaje de CORTINA RASGADA sobre lo difícil y engorroso que es, en realidad, dar muerte a alguien, y lo fácil que parece en las películas, y después de mostrarnos los apuros del Profesor Armstrong (Paul Newman) y una campesina alemana (Carolyn Conwell) para, muy chapuceramente, lograr deshacerse del molesto Gromek (Wolfgang Kieling) en dicho film, Hitchcock nos hace ahora presenciar y compartir la desagradable tarea que representa para un asesino el desembarazarse del cadáver de su víctima; y más aún, conseguir arrancar de los rígidos dedos de Babs un alfiler de corbata comprometedor, en un camión en marcha y cargado de sacos de patatas. Con una meticulosidad implacable, distanciada y catártica a la vez, Hitchcock nos hace volver a sentir la irreparable pérdida de Babs y, al mismo tiempo, nos lleva a compadecer a su asesino.

Pero las audaces maniobras de Hitchcock no se detienen ahí, sino que volvemos a "vivir" el drama desde la posición que en él ocupa el perseguido Blaney, que acude —como ya temíamos— a Rusk para pedirle asilo. Mientras —sin que Blaney sepa nada— su supuesto amigo le delata a la policía, esperamos con impaciencia que el protagonista descubra en casa de Rusk las ropas de Babs; pero le detienen cuando estaba a punto de verlas y darse cuenta de todo. Nos toca ahora seguir, por un lado, la marcha de la investigación que llevan a cabo el Inspector Oxford (Alec McCowen) y su esposa (Vivien Merchant) —protagonistas de deliciosas viñetas gastronómicas llenas de humor— y, por el otro, el encarcelamiento y condena de Blaney, y su evasión poco antes de ser ejecutado. Y una vez libre, ¿a dónde se dirige nuestro falso culpable? A casa del asesino; y precisamente cuando Oxford, gracias a su mujer, empieza a tener dudas sobre la culpabilidad de Blaney, le dan la noticia de su fuga. Mientras Blaney sube por la escalera que conduce al apartamento de Rusk, tememos por su vida; cuando penetra en él y lo encuentra vacío pero con el cadáver desnudo y con una corbata ciñéndole el cuello de una mujer, y comprende todo, tememos que aparezca la policía y se persuada definitivamente de que es un asesino; y cuando quien sube por la escalera resulta no ser Oxford, sino Rusk, tememos que Blaney se tome la justicia por su mano y se convierta de verdad en un asesino. Al final, como es habitual en Hitchcock, los dilemas morales han sustituido al peligro como fuente de suspense justo en el momento en que el film va a liberarnos del drama que viven sus personajes.

Como se ve, el contraste entre THE WRONG MAN —por no hablar de los films ingleses, mucho más simples— y FRENZY no puede ser mayor: la muy superior complejidad estructural y moral de esta última película parece indiscutible, a pesar de contar con una historia más inverosímil —la de THE WRONG MAN, aunque kafkiana, seguía fielmente un hecho real— y demostrar Hitchcock en ella un mucho más agudo sentido del humor. Como en CORTINA RASGADA (por ser Paul Newman y Julie Andrews poco hitchcockianos, y recibir un tratamiento poco simpático) y TOPAZ (por ser los actores casi desconocidos), Hitchcock ha renunciado en FRENZY a utilizar estrellas famosas y atractivas (como James Stewart o Cary Grant, como Ingrid Bergman, Kim Novak o Grace Kelly) para lograr la identificación del público con los personajes; ésta se produce en los tres films mediante la estructuración del relato a través de los diferentes puntos de vista, mediante una planificación cada vez menos subjetivista y menos tributaria del "efecto Kuleshov", pero igualmente precisa y rigurosa. Como en los dos films precedentes, el número de personajes se ha multiplicado, aunque, al contrario que en ellos, en FRENZY los escenarios han dejado de ser numerosos para reducirse a uno, Londres. Tal vez por esta menor dispersión espacial y por haber disminuido el número de comparsas importantes (casi ilimitado en CORTINA RASGADA y TOPAZ), puede considerarse que FRENZY constituye, por el momento, la culminación de las investigaciones que sobre la estructura narrativa y la naturaleza del SUSPENSE ha emprendido Hitchcock desde que empezó a pensar en la posibilidad de hacer una historia de suspense en un film más "suelto", con una forma menos rígida (cfr. el Capítulo 15 del libro de entrevistas de Truffaut con Hitchcock), ya que en esta última película Hitchcock ha logrado que la yuxtaposición lineal o alternativa de las secuencias independientes que la constituyen dé lugar a una línea narrativa "continua", pero mucho más compleja que en los films de los años 50 y 60. En este sentido, la aparente dispersión de TOPAZ fue un paso decisivo, ya que en esta película Hitchcock rompió con su costumbre de hacer que el espectador siguiese un punto de vista único durante casi toda la película, para hacerle pasar incesantemente del de un personaje al de otro, arriesgándose así —como venía haciéndolo desde LOS PÁJAROS, tras la perfección clásica de VERTIGO, INTRIGA INTERNACIONAL (1959) y PSICOSIS— a distanciar a su público con tal de conseguir de él un mayor grado de responsabilidad moral.

Si, en diferente medida, LOS PÁJAROS, MARNIE (1964), CORTINA RASGADA y TOPAZ eran películas experimentales, y por ello tal vez más apasionantes y fértiles —sobre todo la última, la más audaz—, tampoco conviene considerar FRENZY como un mero film de suspense, divertido, inteligente y juvenil. En primer lugar porque ninguno de los Hitchcock americanos —salvo tal vez, PARA ATRAPAR AL LADRÓN, 1955— se limita a ser eso, lo reconozca o no su autor; pero, sobre todo, como el esquemático análisis de su estructura indica con bastante claridad, porque FRENZY es, con VERTIGO, MARNIE, CORTINA RASGADA y TOPAZ, la película moralmente más subversiva de cuantas ha realizado el autor de STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951), ya que subversivo resulta, especialmente en el contexto de un cine como el actual —tan afanado en hacer que el público so sienta confortable, satisfecho e incluso "progresista" sin serlo—, el minar la tranquilidad del espectador, el poner en evidencia lo precipitado de sus juicios y su tendencia a fiarse de las apariencias, el hacerle sentir que las cosas no son como parecen, que lo inquietante se oculta entre lo más cotidiano y vulgar, que la gente no es mala o buena sino una mezcla inextricable de sentimientos y motivaciones contradictorias; y que si se quiere pasar dos horas a oscuras, a solas en la multitud, sintiéndose un héroe, se arriesga a tener que sentirse un asesino y a compartir con él la angustia y el acoso de que a su vez es víctima. Que Hitchcock admita o no explícitamente que este es su objetivo no tiene importancia si tenemos en cuenta que, en diferentes ocasiones a lo largo de los últimos años, ha reconocido que la lógica profunda de sus películas era "hacer sufrir al espectador", que hizo LOS PÁJAROS para "minar la autocomplacencia de la gente", y que rodó como lo hizo la muerte de Gromek en CORTINA RASGADA para que el público cinematográfico se diese cuenta de lo sucio, desagradable, incómodo y difícil que resulta en realidad matar una persona. Además, ahí están FRENZY y sus demás películas, para probar que Hitchcock es, con Buñuel, el más inquietante de los cineastas.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer star opens up about his difficult childhood and why fame will never change him.

If you haven’t heard of Barry Keoghan, don’t worry, you’re about to. In just a matter of months, the 25-year-old actor has gone from relative obscurity to mass critical acclaim, in no small part due to his role in big fat Hollywood blockbuster, Dunkirk, where he played the sweet natured boat boy who accompanies Mark Rylance on a heroic rescue mission in one of Christopher Nolan’s labyrinthine side plots. However, it’s his most recent role as the twisted teenage villain Martin, in Yorgos Lanthimos’s terrifying thriller The Killing of a Scared Deer, which has the whole of Hollywood talking.

Anchoring its story in the classical myth of Iphigenia, The Killing of a Scared Deer is a chilling tale of revenge and retribution; the subject matter made infinitely more horrifying by Lanthimos’s subtle style and almost fetishitistic preoccupation with the mundane.

Barry stars as the film’s antagonist, Martin, a quietly sinister kid who develops a dark and disturbing obsession with his late father’s cardiovascular surgeon, Dr Steven Murphy, played brilliantly by Colin Farrel. Like some cankerous parasite, Martin worms his way into Dr Murphy’s seemingly idyllic family life, befriending his unsuspecting wife Anna (Nicole Kidman), teen daughter Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and youngest son Bob (Sunny Suljic). So far, so unsettling. It’s only during the second act, when Martin reveals his Hunger Games-esque plot of death and destruction, that his truly horrifying intentions become apparent.

“I play a real menace, don’t I?” Barry laughs. Sitting before me in a dimly lit hotel room in Soho, Barry is nothing like his character Martin. First of all, he’s lot older, having just turned 25. He also has an incredibly thick Irish accent. Then there are his mannerisms: unlike Martin, Barry is constantly moving around, gesticulating, pulling punches in the air (he’s been training as a competitive boxer since he was a kid), cracking jokes with a crooked smile and a cheeky wink, and regaling stories with animated relish.

In the flesh he gives off an air of warmth, but as Martin, he is nothing short of terrifying. Because the thing about Martin is that he’s not your obvious villain. He’s mild-mannered, quiet and observant, but he’s also deeply disturbed, emotionally crippled and painfully awkward when it comes to social interaction. There’s an amazing scene where he’s eating spaghetti in his boxers, tomato sauce all over his face, reminiscing about how his father used to eat spaghetti, as Nicole Kidman’s character pleads for her life. It could have been quite touching if it weren’t for Martin’s blank face and monotonous voice -- totally devoid of emotion -- followed by the bit where he describes his disappointment, disgust even, at finding out that, actually, his father ate spaghetti just like everyone else.

“For Martin I wanted to play him as being very straightforward,” Barry explains. “I looked at a lot of documentaries about kids and their behaviours. When they’re putting together jigsaw puzzles, they’re so focused, and totally unawares of the camera. I wanted to make Martin very present in every scene he was in, I wanted to make you feel like you’re there with him.”

But beyond mere physical features and fine acting skills, beyond all his research, the seamlessness with which Barry is able to navigate Martin’s darker character traits and inner turmoil suggests some kind of first-hand experience. Which makes sense when you’ve had a childhood like Barry has. Growing up in a somewhat downtrodden part of Dublin, Barry lost his mother to a drugs overdose when he was just a kid. Over the next few years he and his brother were shuttled between foster homes, until eventually they went to live with their grandmother.

“My granny is a huge part of my life,” says Barry, breaking into a huge grin. “She’s lived in council flats for the last fifty or sixty years. She's raised ten children there, and hasn't moved.” All the tenderness and emotion that Martin lacks, Barry has in abundance, especially when talking about his family. “Growing up, there was a really big sense of community across all the flats. You’d knock next door if you needed sugar or milk.”

A mischievous kid, Barry and his brother would run around the block wreaking havoc wherever they went -- “We flung frozen fish nuggets through all our neighbours’ windows.” And like those fish nuggets, his outlook on life is optimistic. “I think going through everything has made me strong,” he muses. “Like, if something bad happens, I'm just like, 'Oh whatever.' Especially in the acting game, there is a lot of tippy-toeing, a lot of divas, but I just feel blessed, I'm grateful for everything I have, because it’s so much better than what I ever expected for myself.”

He was also a bit of a daydreamer. “I was always the one with the imagination,” he says wistfully. “I knew that was going somewhere, I knew I had to go somewhere. So when I came across this flyer for an open audition in a window one day, down in the shop near where I lived, I just took the number and rang it. I was only 17 and had never acted before, but I was just like, ‘I can do that. I'm a good liar, I know how to lie and pretend.’ I get away with trouble all the time, so I knew I could do it.” It did the trick, and Barry ended up getting a small role on the independent Irish movie Between the Canals. After that, he landed a small part in another Irish film, got himself an agent, and the roles started rolling in.

At first acting was just a means to an end. “I started getting all this money,” says Barry. “They were paying me and feeding me. That’s when I knew it was something I could do.” For someone so exceptionally talented, to hear him say he was only in it for the money comes as a bit of a shock. But Barry reassures me that all this changed when he started discovering all the old movies with Paul Newman and Marlon Brando. All he wants to do now is work on his craft. Who does he look to for inspiration? “The way Leonardo DiCaprio transforms himself into another character, I find that fascinating. He doesn’t even seem like himself. That’s what I love about acting, being someone completely opposite to me but always showing a little bit of yourself, too.”

But it’s much more than that. For Barry, acting allows him to access and in turn work through a lot of suppressed feelings from his childhood, that he hasn’t been able to express in real life as Barry. “I get to talk about my personal stuff but do it in character,” he muses, “because I’m not brave enough to talk about my feelings in real life. Once you get given a name and different identity, it’s like you're allowed to be sad, angry or happy. Whereas if it’s me, I tend to wear a guard and protect myself.”

Since its release, reviews praising Barry’s performance have been pouring in. There’s even talk about a potential Oscar nomination. Is he worried about fame changing him? “Yeah, if I start hanging out with all the stars,” he laughs. “But it’s not in me to do that though. It’s all very nice and good to get recognition and have people genuinely tell you you're great and that they like your work, but I can see how it ruins people.” With a strong head on his shoulders, I can’t see that ever happening to Barry. Besides I’m not sure his nan would allow it.

In 2016, at least 117 UK women killed by men, or where a man is the principal suspect. 117 women in 365 days is one woman dead every 3.1 days.

7 January 2016: Katrina O’Hara, 44, was stabbed to death by her ex-partner, Stuart Thomas, 49.

13 January 2016: Georgina Symonds, 25, was strangled with a rope/ligature by Peter Morgan, 53.

23 January 2016: Lisa Lyttle, 49, was strangled to death with a mobile phone charger. Her husband, Warren Lyttle, 50, has been charged with her murder.

29 January 2016: Andrea Lewis, 51, died suffering a fractured skull, broken ribs and 41 separate areas of bruising, inflicted by Rhys Hobbs 43.

30 January 2016: India Chipchase, 20, was found dead after having been declared missing. Edward Tenniswood, 51, has been convicted of her murder and rape. She died as a result of ‘blunt force trauma’ and ‘pressure on the neck’, 33 separate injuries were found on her body including haemorrhaging across her face, consistent with having been strangled.

31 January 2016: Guida Rufino, 38, was found dead with neck injuries. Her partner Anthony Roberts, is suspected of killing her before killing himself.

31 January 2016: Elidona Demiraj, 25, was stabbed/slashed in the throat. Arben Rexha, 31, has been charged with her murder.

2 February 2016: Geraldine Newman, 51, was killed by head injuries, her two children, Shannon, 12, and Shane, 6, were also stabbed to death. Her husband, and the father of the two children Paul Newman, 42, killed himself after killing his family.

3 February 2016: Bethany Hill, 20, was killed by a blade wound to the neck. Jack Williams, 21, and Kayleigh Woods, 23, are on trial for her murder.

4 February 2016: Caroline Andrews, 52, was strangled to death by her husband, Stuart Andrews, 54.

6 February 2016: Sheila Jefferson, 73, and her husband Dennis, Jefferson, were killed due to head and neck injuries before their home was set on fire. Norman Williams, 70, who was Sheila Jefferson’s brother-in-law, was suspected of killing them and died of injuries sustained in the fire.

7 February 2016: Maylyn Couperthwaite, 52, was stabbed to death by her neighbour Oliver Faughey, 62. Her mother, Audrey Couperthwaite, who was also hurt in the attack said her had subjected them to a campaign of harassment for 6-years

8 February 2016: Kerry Gascoigne, 43, died of “pressure to the neck”. Her partner, Stephen Fretwell, 44, has been charged with her murder.

12 February 2016: Leanne Wall, 36, was head-butted them strangled. Her (ex) partner, William Mack, 39, has been charged with her murder.

12 February 2016: Jessica McGraa, 37, was found dead. Bala Chinda, 25, was charged with her murder.

26 February 2016: Christine James, 65, was murdered by Kris Wade, 36, who slit her throat in a sexually motivated attack. He had been sacked from previous jobs due to reports of him carrying out sexual assaults but police action had not been taken.

29 February 2016: Julie Archer, 49, died a number of days after being doused with petrol and set alight. Her brother, Stephen Archer, 50, has been charged with her murder.

2 March 2016: Dawn Green, 69, was found dead along with her husband Malcolm Green, 70. Police said they were treating her death as suspicious but were not looking for anyone else in relation to the deaths.

3 March 2016: Gemma Stevens, 32, was found dead in a house fire in the early hours of the morning. Gary Tyson, 35, has been charged with her murder, arson and attempted wounding. He had also been accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to her on February 26.

11 March 2016: Lyndsay Smith, 42, was stabbed to death. Gavin Wilson, 41, of the same address, was charged with her murder.

14 March 2016: Robyn Mercer, 50, was found dead outside her home. Her head had been beaten so severely the police who found her ‘thought she had been shot’.

19 March 2016: Paige Doherty, 15, was killed through stab wounds to her neck. John Leathem, 31, has been charged with her murder.

21 March 2015: Carrie Ann Izzard, 47, was stabbed to death. She had split up with her boyfriend, Gerry Palmer, 50, only days before. He has been charged with her murder.

23 March 2016: Lynne Freeman, 46, was stabbed to death by her partner Alan Bennett, 34, he also murdered his ex-partner Jodie Betteridge, 30.

30 March – 3 April 2016: Laura Marshall, 31, was found dead on 4th Her partner, Gary O’Dowd had a long history of subjecting her to abuse and had threatened to kill her. He is currently on bail.

31 March 2016: Elizabeth MacKay, 60, was killed in what has been described by police as a “sustained and brutal assault”. Michael Taylor, 70, has been charged with her murder.

2 April 2016: Marie Johnston, 44, was found dead. Matthew Dean, 34, has been charged with wounding with intent and sexual assault.

2 April 2016: Norma Bell, 79, was found dead after a fire at her home, she had been killed before the fire started. Gareth Dack, 32, has been charged with her murder.

10 April 2016: Tracy Cockrell, 51, who had moved to a new area was found dead alongside Nigel McGrath. Police said that they were treating Tracy’s death as murder and were not looking for anyone else.

11 April 2016: Helen Bailey, 51, was last seen alive. Her body was found three months later in a sceptic tank in the grounds of her home. Her partner Ian Stewart, who had reported her missing, has been charged with her murder and perverting the course of justice.

12 April 2016: Leigh-Ann Mahachi, 22, was killed with multiple stab wounds. Tapiwa Furusa, 37, has been charged with her murder.

13 April 2016: Jean Ryan, 67, was stabbed to death. Her husband, Shaun Ryan, 61, has been charged with her murder.

17 April 2016: Coleen Westlake, 48, died of blunt force trauma and strangulation. Craig Bird, 31, has been charged with her murder.

18 April 2016: Nasreen Khan, 39, was killed with multiple stab wounds inflicted by her husband Imran Khan, 39.

28 April 2016: Louise O’Brien, 36, was found dead and wrapped up in a carpet after having been strangled between 24 and 28 April. Her partner, David Anderson, 41, has been charged with her murder.

1 May 2016: Natalie Hemming, 31, was last seen. Her family reported her missing on 3 May. Her husband Paul Hemming, 42, was arrested on 4 May and later charged with her murder. Her body was found on 22 May.

1 May 2016: Becky Morgan, 17, was pulled dead from the sea. Michael Bowditch, 21, was found guilty of manslaughter for not helping her or summoning help as she drowned.

3 May 2016: Iris Owens, 75, was found dead. Her son, Robert Owens, 47, has been charged with her murder.

4 May 2016: Julie Cook, 44, died in hospital a day after sustaining a head injury. Daniel Bragg, 36, has been charged with manslaughter.

7 May 2016: Khabi Abrey, 30, was killed as a result of a fire in the flats where she liked. Lillo Toisi, 47, has been charged with her murder, plus arson with intent to endanger life, and arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

8 May 2016: Anne-Marie Nield, 44, was found dead with multiple injuries. Richard Howarth, 41, has been charged with her murder.

19 May 2016: Maria Mbombo, 46, was stabbed to death. Her husband Jose Leonardo, also known as Jeff Mbombo, has been charged with her murder.

20 May2016: Marina Erte, 33, was found dead. Her ex-husband, Gytis Griskevicius, 32, has been charged with murder.

21 May 2016: Sonita Nijhawan, 38 was stabbed 124 times with an axe and a knife by her husband Sanjay Nijhawan, 38. He was found guilty of manslaughter.

2 June 2016: Dawn Rhodes, 38, was found dead. Her husband, Robert Rhodes, 42, has been charged with her murder.

3 June 2016: Sylvia Stewart, 69, and her husband Peter Stewart,73 were reported missing. Peter Stewart was later found stabbed to death. Ali Qazimaj, 42, fled the country and was arrested in Luxemburg in relation to the Stuarts’ death. Police have indicated that they have no expectation of finding Sylvia Stewart alive.

9 June 2016: Andrena Douglas, 53, was found dead when police went to her home to inform her that her partner, Henry Galbraith, 50, had been found badly injured in a caravan fire. Her death is being treated as murder. Police are said to be ‘not looking for anyone else’.

13 June 2016: Karen Hales, 53, and her daughter Jade Hales, 28, were killed by blunt force trauma injuries to the head. Anthony Showers, 42, has been charged with their murders.

20th June 2016: Jean Irwin, 83, was strangled to death. Her husband John Irwin, 77, was found hanged. Police are treating Jean’s death as murder and are not looking for anyone else in relations to the crime.

21 June 2016: A 61-year-old woman who has not yet been named was stabbed to death. Vaclovas Liubavicius, 61, who is believed to have been her partner, has been charged with her murder.

23 June 2016: Agnieszka Szmura, 30, was stabbed to death. Toryino Williams, 22, has been charged with her murder.

23 June 2016: Sarah Nash, 37, was strangled and beaten by her partner Lee Guntrip, 25. He had attended a Building Better Relations Programme and a Domestic Abuse Programme after pleading guilty to charges of actual bodily harm and assault by beating. Guntrip also killed himself.

6 July 2016: Albertina Choules, 81, died of a head injury before her body was set alight. Tautuydas Narbutas, 23, has been charged with her murder.

12 July 2016: Allison Muncaster, 48, was shot dead. Her husband Stephen Muncaster, 47, is believed to have killed her then shot himself dead.

15 July 2016: Fiona Southwell, 60, was found dead. Daniel Edwards, 21, has been charged with her murder.

18 July 2016: Aimee Spencer, 27, died of her injuries after having been reported pushed/thrown to her death.

18 July 2016: Emma Baum, 22, died from severe head injuries after a “sustained attack”. David Davies, 25, has been charged with her murder.

4 August 2016: Gregana Prodanova, 38, was last seen alive. She was reported missing on 8th August and ‘human remains’ now confirmed to be hers, were found on 16 August. Her ex-partner Kostadin Kostov, 42, has been charged with her murder.

4 August 2016: Lynne Braund, 54, died of critical injuries after being taken to hospital with severe burns. Raymond O’Connell, 63, has been charged with her murder.

15 November 2016: Belen Tripp, 52, was stabbed to death. Her husband Peter Tripp, 70, has been charged with her murder.

20 November 2016: Natasha Wild, 23, was stabbed to death. A 31-year-old man was being held in police custody.

22 November 2016: Deeqa Ibrahim, 41, was stabbed to death. Bashir Ali, 41, said to be known to her, has been charged with her murder.

23 November 2016: Lisa Skidmore, 37, was found dead after a fire in her home. Her post-mortem found she had been strangled before the fire started. Her 80-year-old mother told police she had disturbed an intruder who had then assaulted her. Police are looking for a man in his 20s.

3 December 2016: Rebecca Johnson, 26, was stabbed to death. Her boyfriend Radec Kovac, 36, has been charged with her murder.

8 December 2016: Linda Ordinans, 61, was found dead at home after being alerted by her husband Nigel Ordinans, 63, who told them that he had killed her. He killed himself shortly afterwards.

8 December 2016: Holly Alexander, 37, was stabbed to death along with Ronnie Kidd, 40. Krzysztof Gadecki, 37, has been charged with their murders.

10 December 2016: Andraya Webb, 39, was killed in a house fire that had been deliberately started. Anthony Porter, 32, has been charged with her murder.

12 December 2016: Umida Eshboboeva, 29, died after a suspected assault in her home. Adkhamjon Tovasharov, 34, has been charged with her murder.

15 December 2016: Angela Best, 51, was found unresponsive after a call to police and medics and was later declared dead. A man who was taken to hospital is being treated as a suspect.

16 December 2016: Clare Paton/Nagle, 38, was killed through ‘pressure on the neck’. Her husband, Vincent Nagle, 44, who died shortly afterwards in a car crash, is suspected to have killed her.

22 December 2016: Hayley Wall, 25, died 9 days after being assaulted. Christoper Wall, 58, has been charged with her murder.

26 December 2016: Nicola Woodman, 39, was stabbed to death. James Hutchinson, 42, has been charged with her murder.
