Estou viciado de novo em Coheed And Cambria. E para minha surpresa, a banda postou um dia que, na data de 20 de junho, iria sair um clipe animado da música Ladders Of Supremacy, do álbum mais recente deles Vaxis Act II: A Window Of The Waking Mind.
Fiquei super animado, pois as músicas da banda estão contando uma história, né? Logo, pensei: vai vir algo animado e, quem sabe não é a porta para algum estúdio fazer uma animação com umas 3 a 5 temporadas sobre The Amory Wars? Ledo engano meu. O clipe é só uns desenhos parados e vai mudando umas coisas. Tudo gerado por I.A. Que decepção.
Ainda assim, eu sigo com fé de que virá uma série algum dia. E ainda tenho fé de que será desenhada e dirigida pelo Genndy Tartakovsky, o criador de Samurai Jack, Primal e Unicorn: Warrios Eternal. Podem me chamar de louco, mas tenho fé u.u

Mindanao's Most Heralded Hero

The year was 1619. Sultan Laut Buisan was dead. Rumor tells that, on his deathbed, the Sultan admonished his son Kuda to be wary of white foreigners looming at the distance. Sultan Buisan must have had a premonitory vision. Perhaps, these imperious invaders could make Maguindanao bend its knees, if the latter were to be careless. Right then, or so he thought, the Spanish were just waiting for the perfect time to strike.
About fifty years ago, a terrifying news had spread in Mindanao. It said that the Spanish inquisitors had arrived and taken over Cebu. In a span of few years, Visayas was dragooned into accepting Spanish supremacy. The Dutch, meanwhile, gained an upper hand in the spice trade in Banda islands, Indonesia in early 1600s. By the time of his father’s death, Kuda witnessed the burgeoning competition among colonial powers, mainly the Dutch and the Spanish, aiming to monopolize trade in Southeast Asia. Kuda construed that both would soon vie for control over Maguindanao, it being a valuable strategic location along the Celebes Sea. And so it was clear that, when he took over the Sultanate throne, Kuda would reign in such a precarious time.
Yet Kuda proved to be the right leader at the worst time. Indeed, in what would be the most astonishing feat in Mindanao history, Kuda or Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat ruled with a tight rein throughout his illustrious 52-year rule and successfully protected Maguindanao liberty from western imperialists. His reign made the Maguindanao Sultanate reached new heights of power; its zenith covered in today’s nine provinces: Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga del Sur.
So how...did he do it?
He drove out Spanish invaders.
First of all, Sultan Kudarat was no ordinary man.Various accounts reported on his vast knowledge, brilliance, and incredible foresight. He was a faithful ally and a formidable opponent. Cognizant of the Spanish threat, Sultan Kudarat immediately consolidated his power by conquering Cagayan de Oro, Caraga, Misamis, and Bukidnon. Then he united fellow Muslim leaders of Cotabato, Lanao, and Basilan. In 1632, he strengthened his relationship with the Sultan of Sulu by marrying his daughter.
When the Spaniards finally made their strike, he was able to amass a massive force that defeated the Spaniards in their battles waged from 1634 to 1637. But the Spaniards proved to be persistent. One such battle in 1637 in Lamitan mortally wounded him; fortunately, he managed to escape.
He went to Lanao and bid his time there to gather a stronger army. It was at that time when he made his iconic speech that inspired the people to defend their pride and liberty. Five years after, another war broke out. But Sultan Kudarat with much greater help from other Sultanates was more prepared; thus, the Spaniards were defeated; their leader was captured. In the following years, Sultan Kudarat and the Spaniards conducted a series of peace treaty. Finally by 1662, the Spaniards abandoned their forts in Ternate in Basilan and Zamboanga City. This signalled their abandoned goals to conquer the entire Mindanao hegemony.
In view of all events, Sultan Kudarat defeated the Spaniards for three main reasons: strong leadership, powerful alliances, and a well-organized fighting force. But it was his Islamic faith, being a common ground found in fellow Muslims or Moros, that made the most crucial factor as to why unity was easily achieved. It carried a zeal that the Catholic Spaniards could not break.
He banned spice cultivation in his domain.
There was a time in history when spice was more valuable than gold. Indeed, the value of spice peaked in the seventeenth century when the world, especially Europe, was searching for it. The biggest supplier of spice was situated in Molucca islands in Malaysia. Not soon, a fierce competition ensued among colonial powers: the English, the Portuguese, and the Dutch who later became the victor.
In 1621, two years after Sultan Kudarat ascended to the throne, a terrible news shocked the Southeast Asian people. About 15,000 natives in Banda were massacred by the Dutch who then assumed complete control over the whole plantation. The killing greatly depopulated the area; but the Dutch spared a few whom they could command force labor.
As soon as they extracted the agricultural industry and trade, the Dutch sent various expeditions in uncharted lands nearby. When the news reached his ears, Sultan Kudarat extirpated all spices found in his domain and told everybody to never cultivate them. The Dutch, under the guise of friendly foreigners, regularly checked any such cultivation in Maguindanao. They found none.
Perhaps, Sultan’s decision to veer away from such cultivation de-escalated the tension between the Mollucan Dutch and Spanish Manila, which was also involved in the spice trade.Yet to the future Mindanaons, Sultan Kudarat saved his people whose lives could be in danger if the conflict were to happen.
He maintained an independent foreign policy.
Though already powerful, Sultan Kudarat steered diplomatic relations whenever possible. He was a multilingual who could speak Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, and English, which greatly helped him maintain good relationship with foreigners; however, he kept a distance and never sided with any European power. Maguindanao’s interest was always Sultan Kudarat’s priority.
After consolidating power with local chieftains in Mindanao, he forged alliances with Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia. It was due to these alliances that won him battles against the Spaniards from 1656 to 1658 when five sultanates led by Sultan Kudarat himself launched coordinated attacks against the Spanish strongholds in Visayas.
Maguindanao was never conquered.
Finally, the sun was setting down for Kuda. And the year was 1671, about 52 years after he ascended to the Maguindanao Sultanate. He had already accomplished his and his father’s goal long ago. Tomorrow, when then sun sets again, people will live to tell the tales.
It did.
Accounts about his legacy written by the Jesuit scholars were found hundred of years after. A most heralded historical figure today in Mindanao, Sultan Kudarat was declared a Philippine national hero in 1973, about 300 years after his death.
