Writeblr ReIntro!
I'm posting a new intro because now that I've been on Writeblr a little while, I realize how much information I left out! Hi, I'm Stephanie, I live in the desert with my husband and baby and three cats, and I'm an ace, bipolar fantasy writer! When I was a kid, they said I had ADHD but then I got my Masters degree in biology, so they claim I can't have it. Online tests say I'm probably autistic.
I used to write sci fi twelve years ago but only low tech sci fi about weird aliens, which nobody likes. Now I write fantasy novels! Lots of fantasy novels! I am beginning to post them on my website so if you want to read them, please keep an eye on this post.
My books often but not always have some romance (either m/f or f/f because I prefer female protagonists.) Since I'm ace (and demiromantic), my interpretation of romance and attraction is not exactly what you'd expect from, say, a romance novel.
I am not going to tell you about all my books! I've written eighteen! Four of them are shelved forever! Here's some recent ones (written or revised since 2018) that I haven't given up on. Please ask me questions about them! I LOVE talking about my books! Also, if you want to be added to my taglist for writing samples let me know! Please also tell me if you're interested in alpha or beta reading and for which book! Mutuals only, please!
My books are beneath the cut! As I add WIP intros, I'll update this list with links.
Cast Out
YA fantasy! On her sixteenth birthday, Zisha is cast out of the Plenary Cities for the crime of being born deaf, like her grandmother before her. In the wastelands, she meets Thesil, a depressed and bitter young woman. Zisha wants nothing to do with her — until she sees Thesil's face in a vision. But before she can find out what the visions mean or reach her grandmother's holdings in the wastes, the plague returns to the Plenary Cities. If the disabled really caused the plague thirty years ago, and were cast out to stop the spread, how can it be back when all of them are outcast?
Status: Finished. Being serialized.
WIP intro here.
Now being serialized here. First five chapters up, one posted weekly.
The Bone Queen
This is my NA fantasy about the aftermath of freeing an undead queen and her skeleton army. They take over the kingdom, of course! The main character, Elise, is trapped in Bandrum palace by Aubrey, the ghost who tricked her into falling in love and freeing him (plus everyone else.) He's an animated skeleton now with plans to marry Elise and force her to carry his children. The bone queen has promised him she'll make it happen. Too bad no one cares what Elise wants. If only she had magic of her own...
Status: undergoing a rewrite after developmental edit. Was 109k before revisions. Not available for beta reading.
Draft number? Hahahaha. It has two complete sequels (The Spellbound King (106k) and The Matriarch's Daughter (96k)) I must also rewrite. This series is going to kill me but I love it. My mom, who loves everything I write, complained that it was weird. I'm very proud.
WIP intro here.
First chapter here.
School of Souls
This is my YA contemporary fantasy about a boarding school in the Bighorn Mountains! It's supposed to be a place parents can send "bad" teens to have their problems sorted out, but secretly the founder is using it to train the kids as sorcerers. Even more secretly, the school devours the souls of the students sent there, and the teenagers who graduate aren't the same as the ones who arrived... Warning: does include teenage addiction to sleeping pills and ghosts and and parental death. It's going to have sequels but I haven't written them yet.
Status: Complete first draft. 83k. Available for alpha reading.
WIP intro here.
First chapter here.
The Many-faced Princess
This is YA fantasy with a historical vibe but set in a made up world. Vaguely inspired by ancient Phoenicia. It's about Princess Ameryi, who was blessed by the genderless trickster god, Akihel, to be able to change her face. If her father the king ever found out, he'd have to execute her, of course. Akihel is just plain evil. All the other gods say so. A daughter who's their champion? Impossible. An abomination. So Ameryi will just have to make sure her father never finds out. That was easier to do before the Asirtinsa Empire threatened to invade and her father sent her to secure an alliance with a neighboring king. She's supposed to marry him. Not steal his face and frame him for murder. But sometimes plans just don't work out.
This book was supposed to be about two lesbian princesses who frame the king for murder so they can elope, but both princesses decided to be ace and there was nothing I could do.
Status: Complete first draft. 83k. It's going to have sequels but I haven't written them yet. Available for alpha reading.
First chapter here.
Map here.
Court Phoenix
This is my NA fantasy! Kerra is a blacksmith's apprentice. Not because she wants the job, but because her mother sold her future to him when she was still a toddler who crawled into live fires and giggled as the flames consumed her clothes. Now she's a woman, trapped by the expectations of her family and her village. Until one day, a phoenix crash-lands and dies in her arms. When it's reborn, it chooses Kerra as its keeper. Soon, her dreary future is swept away. A princess from Skyfire, the moving city, offers her a job in the royal court. How could Kerra refuse? Her family's claims that she'll die if she ever leaves the village are just manipulative lies. Aren't they?
Status: Complete third draft. 104k. Available for beta reading.
First chapter here.
The Revenant Trilogy
Adult fantasy. Solving a murder should bring good fortune, but all it brings Mindral Thideet is disaster. Her fame and peaceful life as head researcher at the city of knowledge end abruptly. In retaliation for her investigation into his crimes, Payar Cheref, the head of the powerful Cheref family, burns her beloved cousins alive and scars her face. The scar marks her as a revenant, a body possessed by a godkin, one of the gods' evil children. Her life as a researcher is over. All that's left is revenge.
No one believes her when she denies that godkins have any power over her. But godkins, real ones, are far closer than she realizes. Tearing down Payar Cheref could destroy Mindral, her family, and the nation itself.
-The Halfway Revenant (rewriting draft 4) 120k. Not available for beta reading.
-The Soul-Seer (draft 2) - 130k
-The Godkin's Gambit (draft 2) 121k
First chapter here.
As Immortality Fades
Adult fantasy. Five hundred years ago, one of the immortal and unpredictable Valteifur visited the kingdom of Kathild and granted the young queen Nelone immortality. But there was a catch. She'd live forever, youthful and strong, just so long as her subjects were happy. For centuries, she's met her part of the deal. But when the Valteifur returns to check on her progress, he grants her a new gift: the resurrection of every single person in Kathild who's died in the last two hundred years. Then he disappears.
There aren't enough houses for them all. There's not enough food. And winter is here.
Status: Complete first draft. 98k. Available for alpha reading.
Bi MC, enemies to lovers.
First chapter here.
Stitches and Memories
This one's adult fantasy. Antea's father ripped her mind apart, left her for dead, and vanished twelve years ago, and she's going to find out why. But when constables try to kill her and strange truth magic grows inside of her, hunting her father starts to look like suicide. Too bad going home isn't an option.
Status: I exchanged this with a critique partner and now it embarrasses me. Fourth draft. 122k. Available for beta reading.
Trigger warning: magic seizures
First chapter here.
WIP intro here.
Triangle Park
Contemporary Fantasy. I have no idea who it's for. An elf exiled to the middle of nowhere ends up stuck with an unexpected child. It's about reluctant parenting and protecting the needy. And elves and faeries slumming it in a mobile home.
Status: Complete first draft. 86k. Available for alpha reading.
First chapter here.
Mud-Child
Adult fantasy. Rebeka has always heard that a woman who goes through menopause loses her spark (the magic that lets her create children). If she's had children, it just makes the neighbors a little more fertile. But Rebeka never wanted a man, and she never wanted to raise a child. Not since her twin sister died and her beloved Suza left her for a man. The problem is, the spark leaves a childless woman differently, everyone says. A bitter hag? She'll curse her neighbors. A sweet dim biddie? She'll give her spark to inanimate objects and create a monster. Rebeka doesn't know which she is, but she believes it's a myth.
That was before the clay in her clay pit woke up and called her mother.
Status: Third draft. 109k. Needs a rewrite! Not available for beta reading.
First chapter here.

I love "the monster in the hull" fic so much and I'm excited for updates!!
Every Emily and Billie interaction are golden and your writing is really pleasant to read; it makes me soo happy!
More focus on Billie in fan content is always great <3
I really adore how you write her, it feels so thought out in the best way
Also not sure how to say it right but i like that you address the way Emily lived before the coup *especially* through Billie's eyes...DH2 really lacked it, sadly (i won't comment on how Arkane handled monarchy & consequences but i hope that what I've said makes at least some sense)
Aaaa <3 thank you so much! It's really lovely getting comments about my work & I never quite know what to say or how to properly express my gratitude, but it means a lot!
Re: "the way Emily lived before the coup" I agree - that makes perfect sense and it's SO fascinating to me, and it was something I really wanted to tackle! I hope you don't mind me having a ramble about this on your ask?
Emily's privileges & her maturity arc are something I've been thinking about a lot with regards to the fic but also broadly :D
Emily's privileges
*grits teeth* Monarchy/politics aside, *unclenches jaw*
I think the game made an interesting choice (/genuine) by drawing attention to Emily's privilege & her struggle with the pressures of leadership. Both Sokolov & Meagan comment on it, and Emily herself makes comments (paraphrase: "I can feel my perspective shifting") but it's a shame there was no follow through. You can FEEL the critique of the Empire in the bones of the story but... it's swept under the rug.
Maturity arc?
The clueless comments from Emily feels like they could be part of a maturity arc, rather than a critique of power/privilege. BUT. A maturity arc is... a choice... for Emily, specifically for a female videogame protagonist.
She's been reigning 14 years by the events of Dishonored 2! Even if a lot of that time she was too young to be taking the reigns, still, she's not new to it, and you would think that Corvo was keeping her grounded. There was no comparable arc for Corvo - his failures in his own game was being framed by forces far larger than he, and trusting when he should not. As another comparison, Daud was slipping, yes, but he was slipping in a noir film antihero way - ie. becoming better as a person - and that was well explored.
By adding the 'Emily is a bad Empress' hints but then never going into detail, and you end up with a woman whose character is scrutinised from an unfair angle by the audience (contrast with Corvo). It feels like the weight of having any privileges, within the context of the Dishonored series, is borne entirely by Emily Kaldwin. But as you rightly say, it's not handled well, so the audience just associates the concept of privilege with her (derogatory).
It brings to mind the Boyle sisters - compared to other marks in the game, in Dishonored 1, their only crime was being manipulated by the Regent, but they were dealt arguably the worst punishment the series really offers. Harsh, right? It's not like other characters don't also have wealth & political power & could be abused. Maybe Emily's ongoing clueless comments is an attempt from the writers to be self-aware (knowing that disempowerment is a running theme but Emily is well-off), but that self-awareness only shoots Emily in the foot.
It's a running theme I have in monster in the hull - I want to kind of explore that like, yeah, Emily never really chose this life for herself, same as the Outsider. That doesn't *negate* her privileges, but informs them. It would be like viewing the Outsider primarily as a victim (as DotO kinda suggests), when realistically he's still the master of his own fate (and everyone elses, same as Emily).
What Dishonored 2 did well
There is an aspect in which the game did follow through, but it's easy to overlook: the importance of recurring characters like Lucia Pastor. Dishonored 2's ending spends a decent amount of time highlighting the new Serkonan advisors ("the city's wisest citizens survived" as the Outsider narrates) and blames them for bringing about peace & prosperity.
A generous read would be that the game acknowledges that Emily the Just & Clever learns that her perspective & intelligence alone was not nearly enough to bring about the change her Empire needs to thrive. This insight gained from her time in Karnaca was what shaped her, and giving more power & more voice to the wise people she rules over, was what ultimately earned her the titles Just & Clever. But... that wasn't really surfaced, hey.
Glad you mentioned because Emily's indifference as a leader is a detail that I love, particularly in the context of her own material/political privileges... even though I know it's why people don't like her. In saying that, the overall picture frustrates me!
Let me know your thoughts this is an interesting topic, love this game :)

Whimsically decided on New Year's Day to read 52 books in 2024. Wasn't sure if that was too ambitious, but now it's 15 days into the year, and I'm 4 books in. I like having a reading list so much, I'm thinking about doing this every year.
So far I read:
1. The Sun Down Inn - Pretty meh, although it has a female protagonist and I like that.
Tumblr media
2. The Giver - I found this one kind of boring. Not going any further in this series, I don't think.
Tumblr media
3. The Book Thief - This one was the most "literary," if that makes sense - abstract and poetic and unique. Different from any other Holocaust book I've read. It's a crime that I haven't read it before.
Tumblr media
4. The Only Good Indians - Indigenous horror. Some of the animal related content is difficult to read, but it has a very satisfying ending. You won't have any idea how it's going to end until the last two pages. It was an unpredictable read and I also learned a lot. Found this on Paperbacks and Frybread, cannot recommend her book store enough.
Tumblr media
Next up: The 5th Season and Iron Widow.

hi molly, I saw your tweet earlier about murder books, do you have any recs?
boy do I EVER!!!!!! excuse me for this long answer and thank you for asking for my recs xoxo!!!!
(bolding author and book names in case anyone is looking strictly for recs and doesn't care abt my ramblings lol)
obviously Gillian Flynn is the queen of thrillers and I am constantly chasing the high of reading one of her books. anyone who has not read her books needs to ASAP!!!! Sharp Objects is my favorite
I haven't read that many thrillers aside from her novels because I think she set my standards too high 😵‍💫🥴 so most of the following recs I would consider strictly mystery books and not thrillers
I was raised by Nancy Drew so I am a sucker for a good female-led mystery and I especially love ones that are like, a woman who has a regular job and just happens to stumble upon dead bodies a lot. so....
the Jenny Cain series by Nancy Pickard! Jenny is an absolute icon, I've read all 10 books in the series. some of them are better than others but I think each one is still a good mystery. if you read any of the books in this series let it be Bum Steer
I have been on the hunt for my next Nancy Drew/Jenny Cain, so please note that in the following recs, I have only read one book lol but I do plan on reading all of the books in each of these series
the Crime of Fashion series by Ellen Byerrum - a D.C.-based fashion journalist, which I'm obsessed with, I love a fun theme so the fact that these are all fashion-related (and full of interesting fashion facts) was sooo great
the Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman - okay so this one wasn't a murder book it was more of a spy book (though there was some spy-related murdering) and I don’t actually know if any of the other books have like a murder premise, regardless who doesn't love an elderly woman who becomes a spy
the Lilly Hawkins series by Nora McFarland - protagonist was kinda unlikable and not in the fun way and there are only 3 books in this series BUT the plot of this was sooo intriguing and I love that the entire plot happened in the span of like 24 hours
the Detective by Day series by Kellye Garrett - there are only TWO books in this series which makes me sooo sad because the first book was truly a flawless mystery to me
okay last rec I promise! 😋 the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson is sooo fantastic, and that's coming from a person who typically dislikes YA mysteries! the first three books are a trilogy and I devoured them and the stand-alone after that was simply amazing and there's another stand-alone coming this year!!!!! I'm v excited to watch this series grow
there are all of my recs!! and pls give me any recs you have I love book recs!!!!!

Leverage Log: The Cross My Heart Job
Before i get into the Cross my heart job quick summary of the plot i skipped logging: There's a guy who was watching the company they heisted in the Nigerian Job, who saw the fallout of the Nigerian Job when they conned Dunevich (or however it is spelled)
He's been tracking them, and mirroring Hardisons market shorting.
This is our season antagonist (presumably), he's affable and doesnt actually seem evil? Like yeah he's a stockbroker and all but he's betting on the team and entirely right to say that, from a market-perspective. The teams acts are merely correcting false market forces. Like i get Nate hating him, but also he's an interesting reflection of our protagonists. The best kind of vulture. Also there was a carnaval and a "buried alive" episode. I liked the carnaval episode (we need more marks with somewhat sympathetic motivations) and the reunion in the Grave Danger Job was heartwarming
---------
Now onto our actual episode: Oh, they stole a donor heart... that is a hell of a way to get yourself on Nate's Shitlist. Guess its time for a seasonal reminder that Sam existed. (that might read as sarcastic, it isnt. its a statement of fact not a statement of value)
Always love when series gets "Jessica Fletcher syndrome" (that being, even on our day off we find a case), Nate walks into the airport and instantly spots the enemy plot.
Also love when series pull an Eventide Island, seeing our established badasses forced to rely on their bare essentials. Because after a certain level of "Hardison has at multiple points claimed he owns satellites and everyone in our cast has enough money they can fly to Ecuador as a distraction" it starts to sound less like "our heroes are badass" and more "our heroes kit is badass". (im gonna be honest, im a bit worried about the future of the show on that point, what with Parker2000 having been invented, that is very much the sort of thing that preludes into a jumped shark. Nothing against the cute little frog-bot design wise, its the narrative purpose that is worrying.)
"if we're naked we steal clothes" Great line, 10/10.
Love the swift efficiency with which they buyout the seafood restaurant. And the way Nate instantly recognizes the name of our antagonist. The reminder that their shitlist is a mile long, they study these people months in advance and that this guy was under the radar because he was dying already.
Also nice to see the show point out something that isnt always obvious about its premise. The show tends to present it as "innocent victim approaches Team Leverage at Nate's Bar and tells them about the Crime", but its actually "Team leverage scouts out rich people, does their research, identifies key victims and interviews the victims as part of the research" When someone shows up at Fords Bar at the beginning of an episode, its because Ford called them there. So having Ford say "i've been scouting Dean Chesney for a while, he's just low priority cause this problem will probably solve itself..." is nice.
Ironic that the only reason Dean Chesney is this desperate is cause he's too dying to get on the donor list. Which is also the only reason Nate hasn't taken him down months ago.
"God helps those who help themselves" followed by "And I help those who cant" with a final "God help you if anything happens..." and a climactic "I didnt kill you, God killed you"... Lovely combo of lines that are both amazingly dramatic and a nice reminder that this guy almost became a priest. Whichever writer came up with that deserves a raise. 11/10. Havent seen enough of his religious background in a while.
Hardison pretending to be a trans person because Elliot could only steal a female ID. Great improv on the characters part.
Old man dying with a snowglobe, nice little reference. Citizen Kane.
I also apreciate the subtlety in this episodes placement within the season. They deliberately placed it after the previous episode because they knew that some members of the audience might feel that Nate should've taken the deal (even more resources to track down even more crooks in exchange for a 24 hour window).
So the writers put the "you have two hours or the boy dies of not having a donor heart" job imediatly after that offer to emphasize that, when dealing with human lives 24 hours is a lot.

Regarding KP...I mean, we can blame the writers for not including women. However, considering this is supposed to be a mafia centric storyline, I guess the writers wanted to keep it "realistic" (amongst all the unrealism...) in not including them since these types of organized crime groups are notorious for being misogynistic... amongst many other things, but lets not get into that... Though they could have included a female character similar to the protagonist in Killing Eve, I suppose that's too ahead of their time for them 😕.
I guess viewers will have to be content with that one trans actress that's supposed to be the bar owner and who we'll probably see for like, 3 minutes in the entirety of the series... tbh, I've heard the actual book series is some twisted ass shit from the main two couples so in some ways, I think its a good thing not adding female characters 'cause I don't trust these writers to write a woman that isn't s*xually a*saulted or having her agency/autonomy stripped in some way for "characterization purposes" as many writers like to do.
At least that's my opinion on it. You win some, you lose some, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I see what you’re saying, and I agree that the involvement of women in a BL mafia series could have led to some yikes-y shenanigans, but I think excluding female characters entirely—if that really was their thought process—is the laziest solution from a writing standpoint. I expect better.
There’ve been so many great female characters in series recently. Cutie Pie is mostly men as well, but at least we have Kuea’s mother and their family’s maid who have very distinct looks and personalities; Something in My Room had three prominent female characters who each have complex personalities and situations, and none of them is a love interest; Bad Buddy had PranPat’s mothers, plus Ink and Paa; Not Me had Nuch, Namo, Eugene (my poor angel), White and Black’s mother, and Yok’s mother; Enchanté has Akk’s sisters and Theo’s mother.
KinnPorsche arriving on the heels of that with this big a cast and not a single woman included is wild to me.
Tumblr media
That said, KinnPorsche was only high on my list of anticipated series when Gameplay was still cast as Porsché alongside Jeff’s Kim. I was a big fan of their series Ingredients, so ever since Gameplay announced that he wouldn’t be in the series anymore, most of my enthusiasm dried up. Now I’m just excited for Perth because he deserves more opportunities in general, and he’s been fantastic as Jay in Cutie Pie, so I hope his role in KinnPorsche gets him noticed by more potential directors and producers. 💖
It might be good! I liked the newest trailer. But I’m going into KinnPorsche Head Empty, No Expectations, Just Vibes. Mafia stories are tricky at the best of times, and I read enough of the novel to know that it doesn’t have a solid foundation. Of course, good series have been made from terrible novels, but I’m hoping that as the industry becomes more lucrative over time, they’ll go the Not Me route and start using original work intended for the screen as the standard.
Ultimately, I hope it does well because the cast has been through a nightmare with this whole production and sponsor switch, and they deserve to have their hard work rewarded. I just think it’s worth noting that, y’know, it wouldn’t have ruined the world to include a woman or six.
On that note, everyone please support GAP the Series, the wlw romance series of my dreams with FOUR sapphic couples. 🥰
