Summary of translations of the Spy x Family EYES ONLY fanbook. Character comments by Tatsuya Endo
Damian
Damian's character is inspired by the manga "Hana Yori Dango" (also known as "Boys Over Flowers") by Yoko Kamio, specifically Tsukasa Domyouji.
He was originally a nasty guy who bragged about his status, but soon became a nice guy.
Endo originally wanted him to be a nastier character.
Lin says that Damian and his lackeys are true friends and that Damian's whole story to come should be done with care
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know if many know this, but it's known that Tatsuya Endo is a fan of the shoujo genre. And the fact that he based it on a Yoko Kamio's character excites me *doki doki*
Tsukasa and Damian already have a lot in common for example:
They are both haughty.
They both brag about their social status
They like to make fun of others
They have a personality uhm…. complicated?
They are never with their family ( one of the main reasons why they are both like that )
And the most important of all… ¡They are in love with unique girls, they received the fist of love!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But here's something that catches my attention, Tatsuya Endo said that the coming story for Damian should be done very carefully. That means that Damian's character is really going to influence the story a lot. And guess who else he will influence? That's Anya. I don't want to rush to say too much but the way things are going in the manga Damian and Anya's relationship is really moving forward. Damian is willing to protect Anya from danger. And that has been shown many times in the manga. Even though he often says that Anya is very annoying and more unpleasant things, he really appreciates her a lot and cares about her. And I don't know if you have seen the anime/manga of Hana Yori Dango, well, the real villain of the anime is Tsukasa's mother, once Makino and him start a relationship, doumyouji's mother does everything to separate them. I don't know if Endo has something similar in mind for Damian and Anya's story but it's going to be interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I don't want to get ahead of myself but I'm 90% sure that Damian and Anya will be together in the end and I'll tell you why? Because they complement each other too much and for example Damian is very serious and mature for a boy of his age, Anya is very immature and is not serious at all (but well she is only 4 years old) But what I mean is that Damian has that seriousness that she lacks, and Anya has that joy and spontaneity that he lacks. Anya has influenced Damian a lot and in a way changed him, the same thing happened with Tsukasa, he met Makino a girl totally different from the ones he knew and she changed him. Damian appreciates Anya a lot but she appreciates Damian? At first she thought he was an annoying brat and to some extent she still thinks the same, but Makino also had that thought of Doumyouji but as she got to know him those thoughts changed and in the end she ended up falling in love with Doumyouji. Probably something like this will happen with Damian and Anya, she will get to know Damian and little by little she will start to love him the same way he does. But for this I think there has to be a time skip. So we can only wait for the evolution of one of the most popular spy x fmily couples. ♡

Tatsuya Endo's Character Commentary from the Official Spy x Family Fanbook English Translation Part 2:
Long post ahead. <<Part 1 here>>
Tumblr media
Franky:
(Endo) The model for his character is Mozzie, who is next to the main character of the foreign drama "White Collar". The glasses are also exactly the same. He's a really good character who talks a lot of nonsense, but not a despicable one. It is rare to find a character with a model in "SPY x FAMILY".
Tumblr media
This is Mozzie from White Collar, played by the actor Willie Garson.
The stripes on his socks are intended to make him look a little more fashionable, to give him a popular look.
He is well liked by the people from the underground. The tobacco shop is a sort of hideout for Franky, and if he's chased out of there, I think he's got another place and identity. His name "Franky" seems like not his real name too.
Tumblr media
Sylvia Sherwood:
(Endo) The cool big sister superior officer. Big sister...? Her design was inspired by the Paris Collection, or whatever fashion magazine I was looking at. Her glasses, curly hair, and the hat are all a bit too troublesome to draw...
She has the appearance of an independent woman, but in her private life, she is a very sloppy person. She lives in a very dirty room. I may draw that in an extra chapter soon. Her fighting ability is unknown, but it seems she's not that strong.
Tumblr media
Yuri Briar:
(Endo) His visual is exactly like Yor, a male version one. I thought about him having short hair, but it didn't feel right, so I decided to go with my current style. If he doesn't talk, I'm sure he'll be popular (with girls). I wonder if he's interested in anyone other than his sister?
(Hayashi) I think he's interested in his job?
(Endo) Yuri is certainly a very hardworking and a serious person. He really wants to protect the peace of Ostania, and I think he truly believes that this is for the sake of his sister. After all, she is his sister. He doesn't seem to have any hobbies that involve spending money, and since his taste buds are spoiled, he doesn't seem to eat gourmet food either.
He thinks Anya is a "despicable little brat". Compared to Franky, he's not used to children, so he competes with them in the same way.
Tumblr media
Henry Henderson:
(Endo) Most of the characters are introduced only for a particular episode, but if I try to draw them and find them easy to move, I stick with them. I never thought that Henderson and Yor's boss, the shopkeeper, would play such an active role...
By the way, he's the only character who has a fanservice scene (the shower scene) in the work.
I liked the mismatched jersey he wore during the dodgeball round, so I'd like to have him do various cosplays as well. Like doing "Today's class is [redacted]", but I don't think there will be much demand for it.
Tumblr media
Damian Desmond:
(Endo) He's exactly like Domyoji from "花より団子 / Hana Yori Dango / Boys Over Flower" (by Yoko Kamio) (Laughs). In his first appearance, he was a jerk who boasted about his status, but he soon became a good boy. I wanted to make him a meaner character though.
Tumblr media
This is Domyoji Tsukasa, the main lead of the romance series Hana Yori Dango or Boys Over Flower, a manga by Yoko Kamio
(Hayashi) Because Ewin and his friend are good guys, I think he's getting better hanging around with them. They're really good guys who are always there for Damian and give him the attention that he needs. Damian should be thankful to the both of them.
(Endo) In the future, there may or may not be a dark episode of "After all, humans only want money and power...." (Laughs)
Tumblr media
Becky Blackbell:
(Endo) Like Damian, she started out as a tsun-tsun (tsundere), but she soon became friendly.... And she was able to get along with Anya in just one episode. She's very easy going.
She thinks people her age are "brats" and doesn't have many friends other than Anya. I would like to make at least 1 more person to be her friend. Her personality and design are probably based on Marika-chan from "愛してるぜベイベ★★ / I love you baby ★★" (Yoko Maki). She's precocious and cute.
Tumblr media
Marika-chan from the manga series Aishiteruze Baby / I love you baby by Yoko Maki
Unrelated, but I kinda like her last name "Blackbell". I don't remember the reason why I gave it to her though.
Tumblr media
Fiona Frost:
(Endo) I really like "Nightfall's" design including her coat. The image color is "blue" in contrast to Yor. In terms of standing position, her character is to stir up the romance part of the story. I thought of it as a way to add variety to the story.
(Hayashi) There was quite a bit of talk about putting out a character on WISE's side as a friend during Twilight's meeting. I thought it would be nice to have at least one colleague for Twilight.
(Endo) The name "Nightfall"  means to "follow around after Twilight (evening)". Emile and Ewin start with "E" because they're following Damian "D". I know people might think that the names of the other characters also have meanings to them, but I actually just added them on a whin (Laughs)
Donovan Desmond: (I can't add his pic anymore)
(Endo) Since he's the last boss, I'm careful not to make him look like a dull character. With a face like this, I'm sure that Damian looks like his mother (Laughs)
He was a member of the ruling party during the war, but now he's a member of the opposition party, so I have an image of him hiding in the background.
(Hayashi) He's a character with a lot of secrets, but the goal is to get into his heart, so please pay attention to him in the future!

My Drama Universe 2022 Wrap-up
For someone who’s been fussy about being in a drama-slump this year (well, k-drama slump to be exact), this wrap-up list sure proved otherwise. Not as extensive as what others might have, perhaps, but these are what showed up to me this year that I willingly embraced consumed. Mostly BLs and Thai’s series, not all that I picked were airing this year, some aired year(s) back. Even for the ones airing this year, not all I watched live. So, it will probably cloud my perception of the show, somehow. However, I’m a firm believer of that not every show is for everyone (or, in this case, me), and that sometimes I had better experience of consuming certain shows when I watched it later after its airing period in my own pace.
A bit of story nobody asked. I’ve been watching Asian tv series / movies since the mid-end 90s. Started with mostly J-drama(s) and very occasionally C/Tw-drama(s), and then followed by an intense past decade of mostly K-drama(s). It was only at the beginning of this year that I’ve been exposed to Th-drama(s) and BLs (or QLs in general) and that was partly due to some major changes I had this year (moving back home to a time zone 12-hours ahead after 4-5 years being away in a foreign land + the series of reverse culture shock). Diving into these media has somehow given me a new kind of comfort I didn’t know I needed at the time. A comfort I know I will still be seeking for the next years to come. And since I’ve made this Tumblr page as my safe zone, why not include a yearly recaps/wrap-up list for my own documentation, also as an index to refer to if later I decide to make some Best-of-2022 kind of posts.
Anyway, I don’t do quantified rating here, I’m just giving some little hearts or highly subjective brief commentary shouts, if any. But if anyone would like to talk or share some thoughts about some of these shows with me, feel free to drop by the comment or my dm or ask box :)
Oh, and when I said little hearts, I mean these:
🤍 (white) - the show owns my soul, period.
🖤 (black) - it’s my top-something-kind-of shows.
❤️ (red) - loved any aspect of the show: the stories / the tropes / the character(s) / pair(s) / the music / the aesthetics.
Ok, now, the list(s) will go under the cut. A little notes: I didn't separate them based on the genre (QL/non-QL) or the regions for my own convenience.
First, here’s the list of the shows I watched and finished this year, supposedly in a chronological order I picked them (but maybe some were off the timeline -- I didn’t really track them real time, unfortunately):
F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers (Thailand 2021-2022) -- I watched almost all adaptation of Hana Yori Dango, and I must say, the Thai version was better written in most parts. Also, Kavin-Kaning was cute here, almost a match to the Korean’s counterpart: So YiJeong - Chu GaEul <3
🤍 Kieta Hatsukoi (Japan 2021) -- my first love, ever, in BL. I adore this show so so much!
❤️ 2gether + Still 2gether (Thailand 2020) -- not gonna lie, these ones gave me comfort in an unexplainable way.
❤️ TharnType (Thailand 2019) + TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love (Thailand 2020) -- you can say anything about this show or everything about it, but to me, this gave me my #1 comfort character: Type Thiwat Phawattakun, and it hasn’t changed.
Together with Me (Thailand 2017) + Together with Me: The Next Chapter (Thailand 2018) -- the friendship in this show was one of my favorites. Also, this show introduced me to my ultimate favorite BL casting pair: MaxTul. But my most favorite part? Their hometown by the river in the Amphawa district.
My Husband in Law (Thailand 2020) -- what to say more: a drama, that I enjoyed but will not revisit.
❤️ Bad Buddy (Thailand 2021-2022) -- the 5th episode’s rooftop kiss arc my beloved, and need to say no more, a comfort show until today.
Cupid's Last Wish (Thailand 2022) -- my introduction to EarthMix; in a way I was glad I watched this first instead of ATOTS.
❤️ Star and Sky: Star in My Mind (Thailand 2022) -- another comfort show, my adorable Khabkluen & Daonuea; can’t wait to see them again in Our Skyy 2!
🖤 KinnPorsche (Thailand 2022) -- the show that ignites something in me which I cannot label. KimChay will forever hold a chokehold on me. A show that, in one way or another, I might never have a proper closure with. That said, the chaotic that is their casts ensemble had a very special place in my heart.
🤍 Manner of Death (Thailand 2020) -- my forever #1 (not so) BL! TanBunn remains one of my top BL couples.
🖤 HIStory3: Trapped (Taiwan 2019) -- Meng Shao Fei is everything I need in a lead character, and I need him to be with Tang Yi. Also, this show has one of the most adorable second couple.
❤️ To My Star (South Korea 2021) -- this show is strangely beautiful to me. Kang Seo Joon and Han Ji Woo were those unlikely pair that I need to see being together.
Semantic Error (South Korea 2022) -- a beauty that is not for me specifically, but I enjoyed watching the growth of relationship between Chu Sang Woo and Jang Jae Young.
❤️ A Tale of Thousand Stars (Thailand 2021) -- I LOVE everything about this heartwarming show with my whole heart. Tian is another comfort character to me. And the village kids! I just can’t stress enough how I really appreciate and love it that the show made the kids part of every step on Tian’s emotional growth all throughout. The slow burn romance, though, tested my patience to the peak, but in the end, it was all worth it. My very brief halfway thought here and final thought here. Can’t wait to see Moonlight Chicken for more of EarthMix.
🖤 Not Me (Thailand 2021-2022) -- I don’t think any words would suffice to express my thoughts about this show, so I’ll just settle with: it’s fucking brilliant, enough said.
❤️ Old Fashion Cupcake (Japan 2022) -- this show very much feels like a hug and comforting in way that especially when you’re at the age range of TogawaNozue you will understand. The conversation and gradual growth of emotional intimacy between them was something I could relate and reflect to.
Tonhon Chonlatee (Thailand 2020-2021) -- I’m a big fan of mutual pining, but not so a big fan of last minutes reveal. That said, this was a show with another favorite friendship squad.
Blacklist (Thailand 2019) -- watched this during my The Eclipse era mainly because of First and Khaotung were in it. I liked the overall story and the theme it brought up, but more especially I loved the cast ensemble and their chemistry with one another.
🖤 55:15 Never Too Late (Thailand 2021-2022) -- this was my first time watching a Thai series with a kind of slice-of-life genre, and I love it, such a realistically beautiful takeaway about youth and regret. Another lovely casts ensemble with my favorite performances of Khaotung and View.
❤️ Vice Versa (Thailand 2022) -- an absolute beauty nobody could convince me otherwise! The aesthetics (and clearly the budget) of both audio and visual were on a whole different level. I adore JimmySea’s chemistry (and so I will definitely tune in for Last Twilight). The only thing I missed was Talay’s job as a colorist. Would’ve loved to see it more incorporated during his time in the parallel universe.
🤍 The Eclipse (Thailand 2022) -- this show owns my soul. AkkAyan is my everything. I lose my mind here but would love to experience the getting lost for any one more time. As imperfect as it was, this will always be that special show for me.
Big Dragon (Thailand 2022) -- a dynamic that’s not for me but I stayed until the end with no complaints regardless. If anything, the color-coded lighting and sets of this show were actually something I believe to mean something more.
Love in the Air (Thailand 2022) -- not gonna lie, I’m here mostly for the depiction of the architectural students’ life (which brought some nostalgia in me) instead of the romances; dropped a bit during the few last episodes of PayuRain and picked it up again once PrapaiSky started. I love Sky and he must be protected at all costs, yet I found Prapai to be that exact figure Sky needed. I was aware of the talks within the fandom about this one, and I stayed with my take.
❤️ Enchanté (Thailand 2022) -- this one comes as the nicest surprise for me this year. It might not have the best twist of the story of all time, but I did enjoy every turn and the eventual reveal. As a diehard fans of friend-to-lover trope, I had an instant massive crush on Akk Itsara (as well as a silent and slowly whinny ‘why why whhhyy’ toward Theo) only the heaven understands. The music elevates every emotion I felt. The aesthetics were specifically made for me. My highly subjective full thoughts here.
Fish Upon the Sky (Thailand 2021) -- my introduction to PondPhuwin, and what a chemistry! This show prepared me mentally for the rollercoaster of pinched heart that is Never Let Me Go.
Choco Milk Shake (South Korea 2022) -- adorable! A cuteness that’s not really for me, but cute, nonetheless.
And then, this list is for the shows that I’m still watching or still ongoing, and most likely will finish:
The Warp Effect (Thailand 2022-2023) -- a chaos I’m looking for ever since Love Shuffle.
Never Let Me Go (Thailand 2022-2023) -- a new (hard) obsession detected. (a reminder that I need to make a specific tag for this as I did My School President)
My School President (Thailand 2022-2023) -- they’re cute, so cute, the cutest thing I’ve ever watched! I love these babies so so much!!! And the thematic music? My everything! -- I scream a lot about them here.
Between Us (Thailand 2022-2023) -- so far, I’m loving all the relationships in this show, but most especially the friendship trio Team, Pharm, Manow - they’re everything I wanted to see in a squad!
Remember Me (Thailand 2022-2023) -- I got a mixed feeling about this one, but Champ’s storyline hits too close to home it hurts as much.
Gaus Electronics (South Korea 2022) -- hilarious! I adore the consistency of thematic advert on each episode.
The Shipper (Thailand 2020) -- with this one, I am now convinced there are no roles that First and Ohm could not tackle.
And here, for the ones I’ve started (mostly 1-2 or some more episodes in) but as of now the mood just never right enough to continue. Most likely will still be on my list next year, so I am temporarily reserved my commentaries.
3 Will Be Free (Thailand 2019)
10 Years Ticket (Thailand 2022-2023)
609 Bedtime Story (Thailand 2022-2023)
Cruel City (South Korea 2013)
Dark Blue Kiss (Thailand 2019)
Extraordinary Attorney Woo (South Korea 2022)
First Love: Hatsukoi (Japan 2022)
Ghost Doctor (South Korea 2022)
Grid (South Korea 2022)
I Told Sunset About You (Thailand 2020)
Love Between Fairy and Devil (China 2022)
My Liberation Notes (South Korea 2022)
Taxi Driver (South Korea 2021)
The King's Affection (South Korea 2021)
Triage (Thailand 2022)
Lastly, the ones that I dropped (but who knows I’m gonna pick it up again later):
Cutie Pie (2022) - dropped at later episodes.
LITA (2022) - dropped PayuRain’s part at around episode 4 or 5; picked up again when PrapaiSky’s part started.
So, that’s it, that’s my wrap-up. I hope 2023 treats us better and allows us many many more good shows to devour!

Didn't love the last two episodes but still finish the series and overall it was pretty damn good at least to me.

Oh well, I’m still not over the craze yet, *Giggles* Here I am, just completed the Season 1 & 2 of Hana Yori Dango with 20 episodes in less than a week, yaey! F4 FEVER ✨
Tumblr media
Okay, can we all agree that our childhood is not complete if we do not have a crush on one of the F4s or if we did not watched Hana Yori Dango adaptations. Who does not imagine herself being the female lead falling for the rich, handsome, toxic male lead? Or falling for the second male lead who wears in all white or any white in it? Just kidding! But I know we all loved the series.
So before I get into my point, I would like to remind you, my dear readers, that the things I will discuss here is based on my opinions. Everything that I will be put here is based on my point of views and own understanding.
Please do not forget to give me comments and please be gentle when giving one. I would love to meet other people who has the same insterests.
So… let’s get started!
🌸 THE F4 and their story 🌸
First let us know who are the F4 and their story.
F4 or also known as the 🌸 FLOWER FOUR 🌸 is a clique of young, handsome, rich men who rules the school just because they are rich and most popular. F4 came from the manga, Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) , which is written by a Japanese writer and illustrator, Yoko Kamio.
The story revolves around Makino Tsukushi who came from a middle class family. She studies at Eitoku Gakuen (academy) where the F4 rules. Tsukasa Domyouji, Rui Hanazawa, Sojirou Nishikado and Akira Mimisaka. All four of them are friends since Kindergarten and causes the bullying inside the school whenever someone gets in their way. They bully the students by the means of the RED CARD. When Tsukushi helped her friend from Tsukasa’s bullying, she stood up against him and kicked him, making Tsukasa interested on her because she was the only girl who stands up to them. Tsukushi fell in love with Rui while Rui is still waiting for Shizuka Todou, Rui’s first love. Then there was Tsukushi’s mom who is against their love because Tsukasa comes from a rich family and we know the rest.
No matter how long and what year, we always bing watch and rewatch the series because it gives us different kinds of story-telling which makes it interesting no matter how many adaptations we watched.
🌸 THE F4 and their adaptations 🌸
Hana Yori Dango has an anime adaptation as well as a movie which first aired in 90s. The first ever television series was aired in Taiwan on year 2001 where we met Dao Ming Xi, Huaze Lei, Xi Men, Mei Zou and of course… Shancai. Yes, METEOR GARDEN. It was released in 2001 and popularized since then.
Tumblr media
Meteor Garden Taiwan has two parts. Just so we thought Shancai and Azi have their happy ending, that is where Azi had amnesia on Season 2 and we met Princess Ye Sha and things just go crazier.
The second country to adapt it into a TV series is no other than Japan. I do not know if they really intended it then Taiwan did it first or they decided to have live-action series after the success of Meteor Garden.
Tumblr media
Hana Yori Dango was released in 2005 and yes we all loved Domyouji! *heart eyes with drools* We cannot deny how handsome and charismatic Jun Matsumoto is even when we first saw him as an Arashi singer. The series had a part 2 also which is pretty similar to the Taiwanese version. I do not know if the Japanese stick with the manga (bec I haven’t read the manga yet) but there are things that are not similar to other adaptations. There is also a Hana Yori Dango Final: The Movie with the same casts but the story revolves around the engaged life of Tsukushi and Tsukasa.
Tumblr media
In 2009, South Korea’s Kdrama was sky-rocketing when they released the TV series Boys Over Flowers, the Korean adaptation. This is where it was popularized again not just in Asia but all over the world. In this show we met Lee Min Ho and Kim Bum whom we gushed over a hundred times because why not. *raining hearts* *heart eyes* A lot of fans became nostalgic when they watched the show. It lasted for 25 episodes with super catchy OST. Almoooost paradiseeeee~
Tumblr media
After 17 years, China released their own METEOR GARDEN. It was year 2018 when Cdramas are being popular and of course they have to have a remake of Meteor Garden. *for youuuuuuu ooohhh ooohhh~* We cannot deny the love we had for the new casts especially to Dylan Wang, Darren Chen and Shen Yue.
Tumblr media
The lastest adaptation that we loved and one of the most awaited adaptations is the F4 Thailand on 2021. We cannot deny how beautiful they changed the story but still the same plot is there. We loved Bright, Dew, Win and Nani on their Thai Series but we loved them more on portraying the infamous F4. They gave us new stories to the series and we cannot help but to delve deeper into their stories. We cannot wait for a week just for the next episode to be released. Let us admit it, we missed the F4! The show was 16 episodes and kuddos to the writer, director and crew staffs for being so creative on the story-telling. How I miss Gorya and Thyme and of course… Ren! *hearts everywhere*
I was shocked when I knew that Indonesia, USA and India had their own adaptations too but as a web series. I stumbled upon it when I am searching about the topic and saw it. It is unlicensed/unofficial adaptations but it is where it came from. Siapa Takut Jatuh Cinta (Indonesia) was released on 2002 and had another adaptation on 2017. Boys Before Friends (USA) on 2013 and Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan (India) on 2014. China has also an entry called entitled Meteor Shower that was released on 2009.
🌸 The F4 and their differences 🌸
Same plot, same story line but different scenes. Maybe that is the reason why we loved these adaptations and it does not matter if we know the start to the end of the story because of its variations.
On Meteor Garden Taiwan since it is the first to have a TV series, it became a little bit detailed and has 27 episodes on the first season and 31 on the second season. We cried, we laughed and we feel what we need to feel on every scenes. Even there was a point where we chose Huaze Lei over Dao Ming Xi for hurting Shan Cai. We watched how their feelings grew and how they fought against all odds. It has also a side story of the F4 which is the Meteor Rain where we knew about Xi Men’s first love and Mei Zou’s love story. We do not know more about the F4’s family but we know that they are born with silver spoon and that they are spoiled rich kids who rule the Ying De Academy.
On Hana Yori Dango I guess they really stick to the manga. It has three parts, the last one is a movie about the engagement of Tsukasa and Tsukushi. This is the only adaptation that has a spin-off called Hana Nochi Hare which took place on Eitoku Academy ten years after the F4 graduated. Unlike the Taiwanese version, Rui Hanazawa is a quiet guy and his family owns a large trading firm. Sojiro came from a reputable family who owns a large tea ceremony school at Japan. He has an older brother which is not on other adaptations. Akira came from a family of mafia and has twin sisters which is not said on other adaptations.
On Boys Over Flowers, we had a new taste of the story. We saw how lavish the life of the F4 and how grand Gu Jun Pyo can give gifts to Jan Di, for example is a heart island on Jeju. Talk about money! We also loved the characters of the F4. Jun Pyo who came from a rich family and plays violin just like Huaze Lei of Taiwan adaptation, Jiho who is the grandson of the former President, Yi Jung came from a family of artists and he is skillful on pottery and Woo Bin whose family owns a large construction company and they have connections to the mafias.
Meteor Garden 2018 is a bit of mild compared to other adaptations. The F4 is not really that bad bullies compared to the other adaptations. They are just smart players of their game who ruled Ming De University because they are intellegent and because they give the school numerous awards because if their skills on playing a card game called Bridge (poker). This is the only adaptation with card game like that and that they are in college. All of the adaptations were set in high school. They give joker cards instead of red cards to those people who challenge them. Huaze Lei also plays violin and majors in music unlike the three F4 who majors in business. We do not know much about the other two F4 but we all knew that they are great Bridge players.
Lastly, the F4 Thailand which I can say is the best adaptation. We witnessed on the first seasons how evil Thyme’s Mother is until she became not-so-evil on the end. We saw how MJ cares for his friends and we witnessed how F4 settle their friendship using fists. Hahaha! We witnessed how Thyme changed and how Gorya struggled just so Thyme could remember. We realized that this show could really happen in real life but also how great it is if someone who holds into power like that changed because of love. This is the only adaptation where I saw that the male lead (Thyme) asks forgiveness to everyone he bullied. Talk about character development! We also knew Kavin’s first love and MJ’s KFC love. Hahaha! We saw how Ren got hurt when Mira decided to go abroad and settle. We knew each character, Thyme is possessive to his power at school because of his Mom. Ren who likes to draw and is very artistic came from a family of Doctors. Kavin who is a playboy yet afraid to fall in love again because of Mona came from a family with high ranking positions in the government. His grandmother is also a National Artist because she makes really nice flower garlands. And, MJ who is a handsome hacker and came from a family of mafia. We witnessed different forms of love and how it was portrayed by the different persons because it is what they knew.
I am so sad because I will the shows but happy also because who does not love that story? Who does not love a toxic guy that changes into a good one because of love? Of course no one in real life would like that but because it is very entertaining, we watched it.
I hope other countries would make their own adaptations. What I like it more is it showcases the trends and cultures in each countries. So I really hope Indonesia, India and USA will make a TV series adaptation not only a web-series. I hope Philippines will make one too!

Yuzuka Rei Interview (Nikkei Woman Feb 2020 - Yuzuka Rei Special Issue)
A long Interview Rei did with “Nikkei Woman” on her (then) upcoming debut as Top Star in February 2020. The magazine is aimed at career women, so the interview asks questions about the pressures of Takarazuka, her career path, as well as a “this or that” quickfire section on her daily habits. I have included scans of the photo shoot too please excuse the washi tape I have stuck on one of them
Enjoy!

Yuzuka Rei, the new Top Star of the Takarazuka Revue’s Flower Troupe: A Big Analysis into the girl who continues to shine!
Get to the heart of the Top Star who, equipped with clever brains and stunning appearance, captures the eyes of her audience, and explore the reason she shines so bright.
“In 2019 I struggled, suffered and over thought. And so, in 2020 I want to pursue my ideal ‘image’”
Yuzuka Rei’s career path and 2020 At the end of 2019 Yuzuka Rei took over as Top Star, and in 2020 she will make her official debut as the lead of the new flower troupe. We listened to her talk about what the turning points in her career have been, and asked her about her determination going forward.
Within the Takarazuka Revue’s 5 troupes, the flower troupe is the company's oldest. Yuzuka Rei became that troupes newest top star at the end of last year.
“2019 was a year of a lot of changes within myself. Basically, before then I had thought that I wasn’t the type that liked to think pessimistically. But, unusually for me, I found I was wallowing in my pain and overthinking, it was a dark year in my Takarazuka life. But without that experience, I think I would have been indifferent to what things were important to me and what things I was am aiming for.”
Yuzuka goes on to say that the play that changed her the most was her starring role in “Hana Yori Dango” (Also known in English: Boys Over Flowers).
“There were many junior actors in that show, so I felt a sense of the responsibility that was ahead of me as the future top star. And as the original work it was based on is so famous, we had a lot of press coverage for the show, and I became almost crushed by the the pressure. But with that production I noticed how when everyone respects each other and works hard to create a good show, an incredible chemical reaction takes place. It didn’t matter whether we were seniors or juniors, or what role we had, a strong bond was born between us all. I think it was then that I realised what the most important part of creating a play actually was. Each cast member stood on stage with pride, and backstage we were all beaming with honest smiling faces. When we are happy in our hearts, it affects the audience too. The whole theatre is wrapped in happiness and an uplifting warmth. Ahh I know now that this is the kind of “image” I want to be surrounded by in my life.”
Tumblr media
After a year of solid learning, she begins 2020 as Top Star.
“What I want to inherit from (predecessor) Asumi (Rio) is her character. Due to her influence the whole troupes awareness of their character has changed. Also something that I learnt from her was how to face my weaknesses and fight without running away. I think I would like to carry that lesson with me in my heart”

The mindset of someone who keeps challenging herself: How Yuzuka Rei prepares her heart and mind
Within theatre, in order to continue to present an unwavering performance of high quality, one must find a method to train their mind. What is the trick to Yuzuka’s strong mindset?
The secret to Yuzuka’s unwavering strength is in the habit of honing her “centre”.
Q. How do you display such natural power without being nervous? A. I’m a very nervous person but, once I have admitted to being nervous, my mind and body become one and the power those nerves once had is lifted, and it becomes easy. When I think about trying not to be nervous when I already am, my body and mind separate and I become unable to do anything. So, if I notice the fact that I am nervous, I affirm to myself, saying something like “It’s just that there are many people in front of me, my feelings are understandable, it can’t be helped”. And then this strange power is lifted and it becomes easy, I can do what I do, and become who I need to become.
Q. At times when you are feeling down after failure, what is your pick-me-up method? A. I have now learnt that I am able to recover faster once I become aware of what I should do next, rather than focusing on the failure itself. Before, I used to drag myself down a lot by thinking “Ahhh I did that!” But now, I realise that thinking about what I should do next in order to recover is important. So I find I recover faster by focussing on the comeback method rather than the failure itself.
Q. Who are the people or what are the words that have influenced your way of thinking? A. I wonder...Maybe in the end its only my own experience that has given me the inspiration that my heart needs to feel motivated. There have been times where I have received encouragement from my great senpais at Takarazuka, and other times where popular sayings from around the world have been helpful. But really, what has inspired me to the core has been my own experience and own feelings. That’s the main energy that drives me forward.
Q. Do you care about the reviews written about you? What about your popularity? A. If I said I didn’t, that would be a lie. Still, in order to aim for a higher quality performance, I make sure to not get pulled in by reviews, and I stand on stage with pride every day. Usually, how I felt the performance went matches the reviews written. So inevitably, when the review is bad I fall into self loathing. But so that me and my fellow actors don’t get stuck in these feelings we switch our way of thinking. We aim to do better everyday and look toward creating something more polished and sophisticated. We have accepted our failures within ourselves and make a point to continue to stand on stage everyday with pride.
Q. When you hit a wall, who do you call on for help? A. I’m not very good at asking people for help. I learn what I need to do by thinking objectively about it without depending on others or running away. By nature I’m not very good at relying on people, so instead I think to myself “I should know what to do if I think objectively about what needs to be done”. I have a lot of role models around me, so rather than listening and learning, I often learn by observing how they approach things.

The 12 Habits that make Yuzuka Rei
Yuzuka’s tips for working woman on making a fresh start!
If you had to choose one, which group would you be in?
Small daily habits, likes and dislikes all come together to create the Yuzuka Rei we see today. From these 12 questions we will dig deeper into the reason she shines.
1. Do you or don’t you set new years goals? Rather than say I don’t set them, I'm in the group that sets them but doesn’t continue with them. In various situations I get asked about my new years goals, so I give answers. However, my current situation continues to change so I don’t really tend to continue pursuing the goals I set in the new year.
2. For schedule management are you a diary or a smart phone person? I’m a diary person! I like to write in my own words. Apart from using the  “Takarazuka scheduler” app to check the performance schedule, I like to plan my month as a double page spread on diary paper, written in black pen. I don’t use coloured pens or stickers.
3. Are you fast or slow at learning your script? Reading is something I love so I think I’m fast? Most scripts, after a couple of reads I can remember it, regardless of whether it has a lot of terminology or not, so I think I’m quite fast!
4. Do you or do you not eat breakfast? I eat breakfast! When I’m performing I eat just before the 11am curtain call. Once the curtain rises I don’t have time to eat for 3 hours, and eating in the morning at home makes me hungry at an awkward time which disrupts my performance. So, with my stomach in mind I learnt that eating just before the show is best. Make sure to always eat your rice!
5. Which do you do every day? Stretches or muscle training? I stretch. When I’m onstage my muscles are worked hard anyway, so I never have to do muscle training. I stretch for about 15 minutes before a show starts and then if I have time before bed, I stretch my hips, thighs, soles of my feet etc.
6. Which do you fuss over the most when applying your stage make up? Your eyes or your base? Recently, its been my base makeup. There was a time when I was very particular about my eyes and eyebrows, but now its the base for my skin that I fuss over. When the base is smooth then the other makeup products stick easier, so how well the base sticks to the skin is the most important thing.
7. Are you aware of what's popular? Or are you uninterested? I’m completely indifferent to trends. Even if I get told by people “This is very popular!” I don’t have much interest, to the extent that I keep my distance from the things that are super popular.
8. Which do you like most? Fashionable clothes, or home interior? I like clothes. But interior is my current obsession! I want to create a space with all the things I like, recently I bought a light blue sofa and a grey tv stand. I discovered that by just replacing these two things, the atmosphere of the room changed and I became able to enjoy my time at home more.
9. When it comes to tidying up and keeping tidy, are you good or bad? To say I am I good at it would be the wrong choice of words... For me, tidying and cleaning to make a comfortable space is the best way to feel refreshed. But when my mind is busy, and I don’t have the time to clean, my home gets ruined, so I think there's a link between how tidy my home is and my current mentality.
10. On days off are you an active person or an indoor person? I’m both. I also like to do short trips overseas. So that I can rest my body, I stay home during performance period. But on my 5 day holidays I’ve done things like go to London or New York by myself. Travelling is the time that I get to nourish “my real self”. Putting yourself in a place you don’t know is very exciting.
11. For daily news/info do you use the TV or the internet? I like my quiet time so I tend to just go online. Recently I don’t think I’ve been watching TV. I have a job where everyday, whether its in rehearsal or on stage, I’m surrounded by music, so even when I’m at home I'm tired of listening to sound. On my phone I check news websites and things.
12. Do you like to read books or manga? Since I was a child I’ve always like both! My parents love books , and I learnt how entertaining they are from the books “Freezing Point” and “Ryouma Goes”. But it was my brothers influence that got me reading manga with “Weekly shonen jump” as well. Even now, taking the time to read a book is a blissful experience.

Non-anime Asian TV Shows that I liked
This is just a short list of some Asian TV shows I liked, list is not exhaustive. Thank you  @cautionworksstuff for encouraging me to do this since you wanted to know more about other foreign TV shows other than anime.
When I say non-anime, it means shows that are not Japanese animated series.
1. Kingdom [Netflix] (South Korea)
This series hits HARD. It’s an original Korean Netflix series. Now, there’s a lot of shows/movies that are named “Kingdom”, so let me clear about this one: this is the one that is set with a Zombie apocalypse during the Joseon period.
Tumblr media
It follows the story of the Crown Prince who is being framed for treachery by his evil stepmom (the Empress) and her clan, as soon as his father died. In the midst of that, a disease outbreak happens that turns everyone into zombies, and the Prince struggles to avoid being defeated by the corrupted government officials as well as to save his people from the zombie apocalypse.
What makes this one stand out from series/movies like The Walking Dead are two things: 1) the political setting - while there is a zombie outbreak, it’s also the battle for power, 2) the historical setting - the guns used here are very limited, and the science/medicine explained behind this outbreak is not like “oh due to biotech experiment gone wrong”, 3) unlike Walking Dead, they actually explained the cause of the illness, the cures and the weaknesses.
They are going to come up with a new one-episode spin-off(?) this month.
2. Girl from Nowhere (Thailand)
This is also available on Netflix. This series follow a character named Nanno, who goes to various schools as the new girl. In the second episode, she’s revealed to be some sort of immortal entity that goes on to expose the sins and wrongful acts of parents, teachers and students. She then punishes them as some form of karma. Beware, some episodes are downright disturbing and only for mature audience.
Tumblr media
I don’t have a confirmation of this, but according to Wikipedia and actress Chicha Amatayakul, the character Nanno draws inspiration from Junji Ito’s Tomie, and the similarities are very obvious. From the way the people react to her, the hairstyle and the even to the beauty mark near the eye, the similarities are very obvious.
One difference though, I must say, is that Nanno is an extremely charming character as compared to Tomie. You will really root for her and can’t help but like her presence, even if she’s a little scary. When I read Tomie, I didn’t exactly felt the same magnetic pull as Nanno did for me. Season 1 was really good. Season 2 was more brutal but I think Season 1 was slightly better.
3. Trese (Philippines)
This was actually based on a Filipino comic series, with the same name. I had actually waited for this series to be animated. This series features Filipino supernatural beings. I had always wondered how it’ll be like if there was a cool anime about Filipino mythological creatures, such as the manananngal, aswang, tikbalang etc. I think their designs and stories are interesting and not very talked about in the media.
Tumblr media
I had once complained about this. We have so many interesting Filipino mythological creatures, but why do we focus on mostly drama series on love and family, and not come up with a horror series featuring them?
This one’s available on Netflix as well, and it’s in three audios: English, Filipino and Japanese. I do recommend the Filipino audio because the pronunciation of the creatures are better. But that might be just me listening to my native language.
Although, just a tiny criticism - there are only six episodes so far. All in less than 30 minutes. This was an issue for me and also my family who had watched it because we felt the pacing was too fast. They didn’t explain what the creatures were, what they do, which can be confusing for people who are not familiar with the mythology. Yeah, I really think it’s because the pacing was fast due to the small number of episodes. If they slowed down, it would be great. Hopefully we get more episodes the next season.
4. Meteor Garden (Taiwan) [2001] OR Boys over Flowers (South Korea) OR Hana Yori Dango (Japan)
This was adapted from a manga called “Hana Yori Dango” (Boys over Flowers). It has been adapted in numerous shows, with Japan doing the first live action film in 1995.
The one that I had watched is the Taiwanese drama version, Meteor Garden (2001 version). There was also a Korean drama adaptation called “Boys over Flowers”. I didn’t watch that one but quite a number of my friends did. There was also the Japanese adaptation, as well as Thai and Chinese adaptation of it. I can’t say for sure which one is the best because I only remember watching the Taiwanese (2001) version and it’s close to my heart. The Taiwanese (2001), South Korean and Japanese drama versions are often being compared. I’ll let you guys decide based on this information.
Tumblr media
I don’t remember much from the plot, although it was this drama was very hyped back then.
This was the summary on Wikipedia:
It tells the story of Tsukushi Makino, a girl from a middle class family, whose mother enrolled her in an elite high school to compete with the families from her husband's company. While at Eitoku, she encounters the F4, a gang of four young men who are children of Japan's wealthiest families, and who bully anyone that gets in their way.
5. The Little Nyonya [2008] (Singapore)
Saving the last for the one that resides a special place in my heart, and perhaps for a lot of people in Singapore.
Words cannot describe how much this was well-liked in Singapore. I remember everyone praising this. This was hands-down one of THE BEST drama ever produced in Singapore. I remember coming home, waiting at I think 8pm? Just to tune into local TV and then watch this show for a good 40minutes. I know they did a remake in China, which I didn’t watch, but I highly recommend the Singaporean version (since it’s the original and the setting is in Singapore/Malaysia anyway).
Tumblr media
This series really introduced the Peranakan culture to the Singaporean audience. I like to think this story has two parts where it follows the story of a Nyonya (Peranakan Chinese woman).
The first part’s setting is during WW2. Huang Ju Xiang, a woman born into a Peranakan family and her mother was a 2nd wife. Because of her mother’s status, she’s been ostracised by her family and is tasked to do the household like a servant. She meets a Japanese man and yeah, since it’s in the midst of WW2, their love story was kinda “forbidden” too. The first part is actually my favourite.
The second part follows the story of their daughter, Yue Niang Yamamoto. This story is longer and Yuening has to face the same type of ostracisation her mother had endured by the Huang family.

I was today years old when I learned the male lead of Hana Yori Dango, and consequently all the Boys Over Flowers and Meteor Garden drama adaptations that have followed , was, in fact, based on the “malevolent facial expressions” of one Christian Slater.

METEOR GARDEN (2018, CHINESE ADAPTATION)
As fans of this series know after Mrs. Daoming chased off Shancai with the threat of going after Shancai's (SHEN YUE) friends and their families.
Shancai joined her parents in the fishing village where they lived (remember Meteor Garden is the only version in which the female lead did not have a kid brother)
Hauze Lei (DARREN CHEN) found her and brought her home.
Later Hauze Lei told Daoming Si he planned on pursuing Shancai since she and Si broke up. Si pretended it didn't matter and later got drunken crying in front of Meizuo and Ximen.
However later Daoming Si (DYLAN WANG) decided he couldn't live without Shancai and told Lei.
A scheming Lei says to let Shancai decide. Then Lei called Shancai and requested she turn off her phone for 48 hours and stay with her best friend. She reluctantly agreed. During this time Si searched high and low for Shancai to no avail.
When he did find Shancai she was with Lei walking on the street, Si confessed he could not live without her. Shancai makes her choice and boards a bus with Lei. Si chases after the bus until it is out of sight and he is out of breath.
He turns slowly defeated.
But then he hears Shancai calling out his name. Shancai chooses Si over Lei.
Lei later claims he did it to get Si jealous (more or less) Lei lets go of Shancai and leaves for Taiwan.
Note: Hauze Lei was a decent guy. He always stood up for Shancai when Si let her down (mainly because of his mom) even when Si abandoned Shancai when she traveled to London to find him where she was robbed. My point Lei should not have ended up alone. But that's just my opinion.

Hi! I've never seen the original or 2018 Meteor Garden, but I have watched the classic kdrama, Boys Over Flowers, which is the same concept. I'm not sure what F4 will stand for in the Thai remake or what it stands for in the other ones, but in the kdrama, F4 meant "Flower 4" because the boys were all pretty and rich and popular! Hope this helps fans to understand!
F4 is based on a manga called "hana yori dango" and is about a poor girl getting enrolled into a school for the richest and most influential kids. F4 is a group of boys that control everything. They're the biggest bullies and admired by every girl in school. Except for the poor girl, who is disgusted by their behaviour and gets in trouble with them because of this.  Obviously she ends up dating the leader of F4, I'm guessing it's stockholm syndrome, and then suffers the wrath of his mother.
re: f4. the original thing that meteor garden is based on is actually a manga called hana yori dango (boys over flowers). and yeah it's been adapted to tv a bunch of times in different countries. i've only watched the jdrama, but only 2 should end up romantically linked to the female lead.
--------------------------
ahh this is interesting, thanks for explaining everyone! :)))
I was super confused for a while bc some ppl said that F4 was a remake for BOF and some said Meteor garden and i was like??? until I figured out that it’s the same askks (kind of)
but yeah I know these shows are super popular so don’t get me wrong but the plot sounds a bit boring lmao 🙈 *cut to me watching the most pointless crack shows*
anygay maybe I’m gonna give it a try but tbh I don’t think I’m a big enough BrightWin stan to actually sit through a het show like this sdkfjh
