A new study shows that female academics are significantly underrepresented in winning academic prizes and having awards named after them. Analysis of nearly 9,000 awardees and 346 scientific prizes and medals published in Nature Human Behaviour has found that men win eight prizes for every one won by a woman if the award is named after a man. These awards represent almost two-thirds of all scientific prizes. Female academics are, however, more likely to win awards that have been named after other notable female scientists, with 47% of those awards going to women and 53% to men. Dr. Katja Gehmlich, Associate Professor in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study, said, "The gender gap between awardees in scientific prizes is sadly a product of a long, systematic issue of poor representation of women in sciences. Despite decades of efforts to rebalance this issue, our study shows that women are still poorly recognized for their scientific contributions, and men are far more likely to win prizes and awards, in particular, if those awards are named after other men.

HANABI SEASON - CHAPTER ONE
Tumblr media
genre: enemies to lovers; roommate au; fluff, angst & smut (future chapters) warnings: none in this chapter pairing: geto suguru x gojo satoru x afab reader word count: 6.2k
a/n: LISTEN this is me refusing to accept the current situation in the manga. i need to put my love for these characters somewhere!!! anyway here’s wonderwall:
❛❛For years, the only thread connecting you both was the living legend known as Gojo Satoru. Fate always seemed to place one of you in the other's absence, but in the aftermath of the night parade of a thousand demons, destiny takes an unexpected turn and your paths are brought together.
Or the one where former terrorist and cult leader Geto Suguru is sentenced to become your roommate, and consequences ensue❜❜
Tumblr media
They can’t stop themselves from looking at him.
Curiosity. Desire. Pity.
It's human nature, being drawn by beautiful deadly things, wanting to hold them in one’s hands even if they cut. Clandestine glances take him in greedily, shifting to morbid fascination. The most insistent skitter away like spiders caught in the light when they find themselves under your scrutiny, ashamed of being caught or irked by what they assume is a display of jealousy.
They couldn’t be more mistaken.
You suppose the pair of you sell the couple fantasy at first glance, sitting side by side and matching in black; black dress, black suit, black eyes, black hair. His sharp, siren eyes contrast against your rounder ones, dusted in the faintest glitter.
An unlikely pair in an unlikely situation, that’s the truth of it. You’ve never even had one conversation. At all. Not since you met, nor since he came to live with you in your apartment.
"And now it’s time to present the award for Innovation in Design. This year's awardee is led by a remarkable group of visionaries, whose work has not only pushed for the transformation of several industries but has also improved the lives of countless individuals.”
You’ve been roomies for weeks and he’s determined to keep the odd, almost non existent dynamic between you going. The roles are set in stone: him, the silent shadow roaming your apartment, and you, the sole recipient of his unwavering disinterest, with no say in any of it.
The silent treatment bothers you more than what you’d anticipated, for reasons you refuse to unpack. You’d expected domestic warfare, belittling remarks, the subtle threat of being poisoned or smothered in your sleep. You were more than ready for it.
There’s no reaction to your presence, to anyone or anything. You two share a roof and simultaneously exist on entirely separate planes. You leave for work early and come home late, often staring at the guest room door with too much take out to eat all by yourself. Other than the weekly home visits from Dr. Nakamura, his psychiatrist, his whereabouts are a mystery.
It’s like living with an emo, non-verbal teenager stuck inside a grown man's body.
So you decided to react accordingly; by disrupting his streak of isolation and forcing him to come with you to a social function.
It’s a desperate, risky measure on your part. Doubts began to creep in when you remembered that the social aspect involves people; members of the industry, top dogs from rival companies and most importantly, colleagues you interact with every day, who will undoubtedly have questions about this mysterious man they've never seen before.
But any hesitation dissolved the moment you two arrived at the venue. You looked at him over your shoulder as he made his way through the crowd and knew it worked. It wasn’t a switch flipped, but more like a tiny chip on his stony exterior, hinting at a crack, but still not quite there.
Not yet. But it’s a win nonetheless. The night is set to be a good one.
“To receive this prestigious award on behalf of Kaneko Industries, please join me in welcoming Creative Director Sera Kaneko.”
The room erupts into applause. Your entire table -all except for your date/roomie/hostage seated on your left- comes to stand. Radiant smiles are shared, you’re all bowing in every conceivable direction, patting each other on the back. Congratulations, you deserve it, you've worked hard.
This is the result of an uphill battle, months and months of sleepless nights, time with loved ones sacrificed and many failures, iterations and headaches.
Your coworkers rush you to move before you can even react. With fingers clutching the velvety fabric of your gown and your heart drumming against your ears, you walk all the way to the podium until you’re standing under blinding white light.
“Thank you.” Your voice cracks against the mic, a high pitched squeal makes you and probably everyone in the room wince.
The MC returns and adjusts the mic to a reasonable height, giving you time to stack your head over your shoulders, clear your voice and get a good grip on the heavy crystal sculpture in your hands.
“We are truly, truly honored to accept this award. This represents not only our dedication but also the incredible potential the work everyone in this room does has to shape the future.”
One by one, you start to make out faces past the foggy white mist. Though it's nothing compared to the looks your companion has been getting, there's something nearly predatory about it. You roll your shoulders, lift your chin, and continue.
"I want to congratulate everyone at Kaneko Industries. This is a reflection of our collective effort, hard work and shared vision. And of course, this wouldn’t be possible without our CEO, Yamamoto Sota, whose leadership has allowed us to dream big and achieve even bigger."
Your eyes move from your mentor’s prideful smile and foggy glasses to the somber presence sitting on the other side of your vacant chair. A black hole dressed in a black suit. A sick spark goes through you.
"And I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to a very special person. Someone who has been an unexpected source of encouragement and inspiration."
His eyes meet yours for what feels like the first time.
A subtle shift of his jaw turns it into a blade, far sharper than human anatomy should allow, accompanied by the faintest flare of his nostrils. In his full glory, he’d make everyone in the room put their foreheads to the ground. You’d be saved for last.
His wellspring of hostile intentions does the opposite of intimidating you. Painting yourself as the target of the world’s most dangerous curse user sends an exhilarating thrill within you. You’re like a kid playing with firecrackers for the first time, awakening pyromaniac tendencies.
The crack is there. You have proof. Undeniable evidence that he’s not yet turned into a walking carcass. Beneath the surface of his pale skin and those haunting eyes, Geto Suguru is not indifferent.
He’s just given you something to work with.
Now you just have a speech to finish.
Tumblr media
You’re at the lovely intersection of tipsy and sober when you take a break from the party, leaving your team to drink to their heart’s content and celebrate as they wish. You’re far from the figure of authority that makes people fix their posture when you step into a room, but it’s your last name on the company logo nonetheless. They should let loose tonight, for real.
No one sets foot on the terrace; the night’s cold enough to make your nose watery and your eyes sting. The vast view of Tokyo makes up for it. It’s just you and your glass of champagne. Everything is in its right place.
As if you’ve been under watch, your phone starts humming against your hip, hidden inside the secret pocket made just for it and a travel sized lipgloss.
The name on the screen makes your eyes close. You take a deep breath before answering.
“I knew I couldn’t trust Ijichi. I’m firing that wrinkly weasel.”
A snort comes through the line. “He doesn’t work for you.”
“I’ll hire him and fire him, then. This is why he looks like a 40 year old. Snitches get no collagen. ”
“Be nice. You know he has a soft spot for you.”
The playful tone startles you. It’s been a while since he’s been in the mood to joke around. You squint at the Tokyo Tower, dressed in light blue light.
“If this is you trying to scold me, just get to it. Don’t ease me into it like I’m one of your little stude–”
He cuts you off. “It’s nothing like that. I just called to say congratulations.”
Oh.
Oh.
“I heard you guys got the big prize tonight. I’ll make sure to bring everyone gifts as soon as I get back.”
Knowing his flashy tendencies he’ll pull something unnecessarily extravagant and terrorize the design floor. The starry eyed interns might fall deeper in love with him.
“The whole team?” you taunt, not necessarily doubting him.
“Of course! Even that stuck-up assistant. Can’t say the same for the degenerate you call CEO.”
You’re just opening your mouth to defend your friends when he speaks again.
“Hey, I know how hard you’ve worked for this. I’m really proud of you, bug."
"Yeah. Thanks." you rasp, nodding profusely like anyone can see you. Your eyes are starting to sting again. You turn your back to the party, feeling oddly exposed.
“Even if I have to hear about meaningful moments in my best friend’s life from other people.”
There it is. A few hours from now, maybe in the shower, you’ll know exactly what you want to reply, something along the lines of see, I would’ve mentioned it, if you weren’t icing me out.
In the present moment he’s pissing you off too much to gather your thoughts.
And now he’s giving you whiplash again. "We totally have to celebrate. Etxebarri?”
"In what, six months from now?" you snort, fear creeps up on you that he's suggesting a spot with such a lengthy waitlist because he's planning an extended stay abroad. “It won’t feel like celebrating then. Jay Fai?”
"Are you perhaps underestimating me? Big mistake, Sera Kaneko, huge."  he clicks his tongue "We'll do both. And if there's any other place you feel like hitting up, just let me know."
"Trying to spoil me?"
“Spoil her, she says.” he chuckles. “You’ll know when I’m actually trying to spoil you.”
The spite in his words makes you pause. You pull the phone away from your face and make the conscious decision not to pick a fight.
“What time is it there?” you shut your eyes tight as soon as the question leaves your mouth. Time zones? Really?
“Early. Uh– 5 a.m. Doesn’t feel like it, though. The sun is bright as hell.”  he complains, surely rubbing his eyes.
You take a sip. “Still working?”
“Just got off.” You picture a dismissive little shrug. Everything is easy for him.
“Things are going smoothly here,” You know he’s been wanting to ask. “I’m handling it. Don’t throw a fit about things you can’t control. Get some sleep.”
“No control? Interesting way to phrase it. Not even a bit? And–” he chuckles airily “have you known me to be the type to stress about things?”
“Zero, and no.”
You turn around to lean against the thick concrete rail. The wind picks up, you hug your waist trying to warm up.
“But on top of sprinkling some passive aggression every few sentences, you’ve had this ominous vibe for a while. I feel like you’re just waiting for me to fold. Not gonna lie, it’s getting exhausting.”
“That’s–”
“But,” you emphasize before the conversation gets too real “I get it, you know? We’re on foreign ground.”
“Good foreign, or bad foreign?”
You laugh at his poorly concealed apprehension. If you’re been trying to learn how to deal with Geto Suguru, his counterpart you can read like a book.
“Dude, you seriously need to unclench.”
“I’m unclenched. I’m super loose, you wouldn’t believe it.”
There’s some shuffling around, followed by a sharp exhale, a telltale sound of him dropping his weight on some random hotel mattress. You huff at his choice of words.
“Grow up. Answer my question, Kaneko.”
“Not Kaneko,” you gasp, no wonder his students show you more respect. “You know, If you’re going to dread delegating something to me for once, maybe– I don’t know? You shouldn’t have agreed to making me your genocidal ex-boyfriend’s keeper.”
“You know that’s not–”
Now it’s him who’s pissed. You switch up immediately, just for good measure.
“Relax, man. Jeez, god forbid a girl tries to make light of the situation.”
There’s a heavy sigh on the line, the fact that he’s dropping the subject speaks volumes. He doesn’t mind postponing the obvious pending conversation as much as he pretends to.
You track down the ex-boyfriend by the bar. He’s just standing there, like he’s above sitting on a stool, ready to pulverize whoever dares come to his vicinity.
Good foreign, or bad foreign?
“Speaking of. I think I finally got him to crack.”
“And just why would you be trying to do that?” he asks patiently, like he's talking to a kid.
This time, you deflect without remorse.
“He’s gathered enough admirers tonight to start another cult. You know how long I spent surrounded by people today?”
“I don’t know. The whole day?”  he yawns, always hating having to guess things. You’re just doing it on purpose at this point.
“Four, Gojo. I had hairdressers, makeup people, a foreign stylist and an army of assistants. My eyelashes are curled a la fibonacci, and my tits look– they put some kind of body butter on me, I can’t describe how good they look.”
You pause, pinch your nose and drop your voice to a whisper.
“All he has is… what? A little man bun, dark circles and vitamin D deficiency and I’m telling you, he stole my spotlight. I didn’t stand a chance.”
“I’m sure you did, bug. Don’t get too caught up about it.”
“I don’t know why I’m telling you this, you’re biased…" you murmur, shaking your head. "Whatever. I’ve been thinking–"
"Have you now?”
"I always found cults silly. I mean, how is someone alluring enough to convince multitudes to follow them blindly like that? Even if they offer a super convincing lore about the end of the world. They always say they’re charming and handsome but the pictures never back it up– have you seen Jim Jones?”
The line falls quiet as reluctant realization lands on you, and you don’t even register how the cold has numbed the muscles of your face until your eyebrows try to lift and your mouth opens. The edge of Geto Suguru’s profile at a distance disappears when people walk past, then he’s back, taking yet another deep breath.
“But I kind of get it,” You speak your truth, more to yourself. It comes as an intrigued whisper. The sharp wheeze of Gojo violently coughing is immediate, breaking you out of your trance. Is he eating?
Looking at the man is a humbling experience. Pretty doesn't do him justice. Granted, the man has seen better days; you don’t get devastatingly close to achieving the dream of a lifetime, and lose a limb on top of it without it taking a toll on you.
Geto Surugu, even withered in every conceivable sense of the word, has something magnetic about him.
The pitch-black suit you picked clings to him with an almost predestined fit, a reminder that under the unkempt hair and lackluster baggy clothes he wears around your apartment hides a strong, well-trained physique made of wide shoulders and a slender waist.
Whatever effort he put into his hair paid off nicely, and having a face like that never hurts. Two strands of raven hair frame his features.
So, yeah. It’s plausible to you that people got hooked on his hardcore eugenics pyramid scheme simply because they wanted to hit. Not that you’d ever slip like that, even at your lowest, horniest hour, but you see the POV.
You realize you’re not any different from the people ogling at him earlier. With the sole difference that he's... kind of in your hands already. ”
“Are you drunk?”
“No. Maybe? I don’t think so. Let’s just say I’m starting to empathize with your commitment issues.”
You hold back a giggle at his pointed silence. Very few people can say they’ve left the Gojo Satoru speechless. And not for a lack of effort.
“Man, imagine if I fell for him. That’d be hilarious. Huge conflict of interest. What would you do?”
“Well, that– would put me in a tight spot, for sure.”
“Yeah I can see how that would be uncomfortable for you.” you admit, rather seriously, tickled by how uncomfortable he sounds. Damn the distance between you for not letting you see his face. “But nah. No. I don’t go for the crazy ones, that’s your thing. Plus it’s bros before hoes, always.”
You suppose the scoff is supposed to be a laugh. “Yep. You know it.”
Your alarms are set off at once. A red haired woman in green has approached your roommate’s safe perimeter, and you know the death stare won’t scare her away.
“O.k. I gotta go, there’s a— situation here.”
“What? What’s–”
“And get some sleep. I’ll text you when we get home, say hi to Yuta and Miguel for me.”
“Sera–”
“I’ve got this, ok?” you say pointedly. “Have some faith in me, Satoru. Don’t make me say that again.”
Your thumb hits the red button, not a glance spared at the screen as you make your way inside, ready to stop the crossover at the bar. The world does not need that. You definitely don’t.
“Aunt Elisa” You peel her hand off his forearm, holding it between both of yours instead. Her thin, soft freckled skin reminds you of a newborn reptile.
You uncle’s second wife. They’re one of the few members of your family who held onto enough shares to get invited to this kind of event. Beautiful woman, living proof that age does not take from beauty.
“Serafina, mia cara,” Her green eyes scan you from head to toe. Her smile never reaches her eyes, it never failed to put you off as a kid. “you shouldn’t leave your date alone, it’s unbecoming. Tonight isn’t just about you, you’re an adult, you should know that.”
The last time you heard from her and your uncle they were going to great lengths to get your cousin a seat at the board, and you moved the strings to make their mission impossible. You’re not sure if they caught on to your counter-scheming, but you weren’t particularly sneaky about it.
She’s always been as lovely as any wretched hag with more internalized misogyny than blood running through her icy veins.
“No. Of course not.” You pout, like it’s a tragedy. “It’s pretty late, so you and my uncle are probably leaving by now, right? I know his feet get all swollen when he wears his fancy shoes for too long.”
“Well, that answers my question.” she grins triumphantly, turning to look at Geto like you unknowingly fell into a trap of sorts.
You hesitate. Geto’s face reveals nothing. He’s inspecting your aunt with the emotion of a grocery store scanner.
“Sorry?”
“I was just asking the young man here what his association with my niece is, but I suppose he’s shy. You should’ve introduced him to the family before bringing him to an event of such importance, dear. This kind of step in a relationship is discussed between both parties, you don’t want to scare him off with your dominant nature.”
“Ah, no–” You relax at once, releasing her hand. Her brick colored lips purse at you. “He’s not shy, quite the opposite. He's just uncomfortable with strangers being so casually forward with him.”
“We’re just worried, dear.” she exhales, her arm slithers around your shoulders, rubbing up and down your bare arm. You shiver at the unwelcome proximity. “Surely you’re not rushing into finding a replacement after Kenichi called off the wedding, are you?”
“There’s nothing to worry about.” You hum reassuringly, shoulders rolling just to get her to stop touching you for a second. “If there’s one thing I learned from our family is that loveless marriages only bring depressing results. It’s one of the many cycles I’m committed to break.”
Her perfectly plucked auburn eyebrows narrow slightly on you. You hold her stare until she turns away from you, expresion instantly softening for Geto. You hold back a gag.
“Are you not going to introduce us?”
“Geto Suguru, a pleasure to meet you.”
The velvety sound of his government name hits you like a bucket of ice-cold water.
You had prepared an alias, but the opportunity to introduce never came. Your coworkers were too put off by his vibe and perhaps mildly concerned to see you bring a plus one to ask questions, and the death stare and stoic demeanor kept them from starting a conversation with him directly, even in your absence.
He has to know she’s a sorcerer, and while your aunt and uncle live in Europe, too busy with a lavish life to worry about Jujutsu matters, your cousin could recognize his name.
“Elisa Kaneko, Il piacere è mio.”
You’re either lost grasp of reality or he’s really almost smiling at her.
“Since my niece keeps avoiding the subject, will you finally grace me with an answer?”
“Sono il suo karma, zia.” You pull away from her and come to stand by his side, pressing your shoulder against his arm like the muzzle of a gun. “Ho cambiato il suo destino. We have a contract and all. He’s tied to me.”
You feel him go rigid. Another glass of champagne on you and you might've poked your tongue in his direction.
Go on. Give it a shot, Geto-sama.
“É così che lo chiami di questi tempi?” She scoffs after assessing the two of you hoping to catch you slacking. “Well if that’s the case, then you must’ve lived a beautiful and honorable life, Geto Suguru. Our Sera is the gift of the Kaneko family, the doré enfant. Our Golden Child, her grandfather used to call her.”
You know where this is going.
"Fate has dealt her a heavy hand, so if she changed yours hopefully you'll do the same for her. For good fortuna of course, yes?"
You let her rejoice with a tight-lipped smile and excuse the two of you, exchanging kisses before walking away, not trying to see if he follows you.
Tumblr media
The silence on the drive back home is thick. Ijichi drives diligently, quietly, hoping not to be noticed by either of you but sparing concerned glances through the rearview.
Back inside the building, as the elevator doors close, your mind is made up to make use of the crack in his facade.
“Well played. I drag you with me to a party and you try to recruit my aunt. Seems like I underestimated you. It won’t happen again.”
The bossa nova version of some Korean song that topped the charts last year plays softly. You let the campy chorus pass. No answer comes.
“For a former cult leader, you sure hate the attention. It must’ve been an exhausting decade for you, maybe start thinking about this as your retirement, hm? Lighten up a bit.”
Your reflection’s a blurry blob on the brushed surface of the elevator doors. He keeps his stare forward, wide shoulders dwarfing your figure next to him, standing at a measured distance. You’re probably insane for poking a murderous man with nothing to lose in an enclosed space, isolated from any sort of protection.
“So here’s the deal, making you come was unnecessary, but you left me no choice, and it's not like you had plans anyway.”
Tough crowd. All you get is a single, slow, uninterested blink that would put the world's meanest cat to shame.
You drop the friendly tone and cross your arms.
“I’m not trying to make this any more difficult than it is. The sooner you come to terms with that, the smoother things will go.”
Nada.
You refuse to go back to zero.
The doors open. Your hand touches the metal frame before they close again. He’s fucking stubborn, doesn’t move until you finally step out with a roll of your eyes and just follows you through the dimly lit hallway like a sinister shadow.
Your apartment is silent, only lit by the city outside. You’re deliciously close to savoring the release of your feet when the world spins–
There’s no warning. You're pushed between the stone wall behind you and the black wall that he is. His hand covers half of your face tightly, muffling a yelp.
A million thoughts speed through your head. He’s breathing steadily against you, while you hold yours and brace yourself for his next move.
This is it. He's gonna try to kill me right now. Hours after I told Gojo to trust me. Is this what those curses saw? Before he swallowed them whole? Fuck. Gojo’s never gonna let me live it down.
You don’t notice you’ve been released until you see his profile. He lifts a finger to his lips, stone-cold eyes set on the end of the hallway.
It’s in that tense moment that you feel it. You’re not alone. There's someone inside.
Stay. He mouths and disappears.
You stay rooted in that spot, seriously reconsidering your life choices for a bit while you step out of your heels. You wipe away the strange warmth his hand left on your face and follow him.
Silence.
A sharp slam followed by a thud, someone cries out.
They’re in your office. You stand at the edge of the living room, ears straining, and let him come to you.
The shadow lunges from behind and you spin. He has some sort of weapon ready to strike, just a fraction of an inch away from your face, aimed at your eye. Not a knife, not a gun, a much more intricate object.
You push back against his forearm and duck as he swipes it at your head.
A brutal kick at your legs sends you to the ground. You land at the center of the living room, narrowly avoiding his boot as it stomps on the ground.
That fires you up. Stepping on you? On your face? Uncalled for.
Your hand swipes under the coffee table, closing around the reassuring handle of a knife. He charges at you. It’s your chance. In one fluid motion, you curl your body around his leg and slash across his calves.
He cries out, drops on one knee, neck straining as he looks up at your glass ceiling. To your surprise he's standing back up in no time.
You get a better look at him now. Young, black kimono, neck tattoo, good fighter, lands a few hits on your side and still moves with determination after the number you've done on his legs.
He never once reaches for his katana, so you know his technique has something to do with it and he’s figured out that it’s useless here. No one but Gojo can wield cursed energy in the building. You both spent a good six months working on the prototype for the security system.
“Zenin, Kamo?” you ask breathlessly.
He lunges again. You're rusty, and he’s strong, but you’re faster even in a gown. You seize the moment, move to the side, grab his arm with one hand and plunge the blade into his side. It slides between his ribs like he’s made of butter at room temp.
He gasps.
“Kaneko?”
He stumbles, eyes glazing over, fixed on you. He’s really young. Can’t be much older than Megumi.
With a heavy, not as graceful as you'd like kick to his middle, you send him hurtling into the crystal shelf unit. The fabric of your gown rips.
You sprint to the office despite your side begging you stop moving. The gruesome sound of knuckles connecting with flesh and bones cracking welcomes you, every single object on your desk is scattered on the floor. Geto and the man move with nearly animalistic brutality, trying to outpower the other. It’s a close fight.
You see it happen.
The look on his face gives away the exact moment it hits him. He just tried to land a punch with his missing arm. All three of you notice the slip, the stranger doesn’t waste his chance.
Geto crashes through the floor-to-ceiling window, glass shattering all around him, landing on the balcony.
Eyes wide and unblinking, he props himself up with his arm. He’s gone, a million miles away. Defenses down.
It's just you and the intruder who stalks over him with full purpose, drawing his katana.
One by one, three shots ring out. The man's knees fold in first, his weight balancing cartoonishly until he hits the ground, katana following with a resounding clang.
You walk carefully, trying not to step on shattered glass until you step out into the balcony and offer him your hand.
The rain shows no mercy. The drops are thick enough to sting on bare skin. Aoyama is nothing but a quiet hum at night. You take the rejection and go back inside before you're completely drenched and risk hypothermia.
You walk over the man, using the butt of your gun to push away a strand of hair sticking to your face. The beautifully done updo is ruined, you feel it in the release in your temples.
“As I was saying, I don’t expect us to be besties, but we don’t have to be enemies either. The psychological waterboarding thing sounds exhausting. You seem to be doing that yourself just fine.”
It’s a miracle, the liquor cabinet survived the fight. You fix up two generous glasses, skip the ice for him, feeling that he's one of those people.
“I must’ve truly been blessed, then. Karma is rarely known to be so benevolent.”
He’s something else. After that pitiful display, wet like a dog abandoned in the pouring, ice cold rain, and slipping on his first attempt at regaining his footing, there's still an acidic edge to his words. Venom drips from every syllable.
“Hey, you took the liberty of introducing yourself to my aunt, I thought I could afford a little joke.”
His hair sticks to his neck, bun unraveled. Strands cling to the side of his face. He’s limping as he approaches you, there’s a bright red spot where his scar must be. He stops at a safe distance, on the other side of the body.
You slide the glass across your desk in his direction, not in a gesture of hospitality, but more like offering a lifeline to a drowning man.
It’s weird, being looked at by him. His pupils shift. You take a sip and fight back a wince. You’d grabbed the first bottle you saw. Safe to say it wasn’t one of yours.
“Your clan doesn’t know.”
Droplets of water hit the floor under him, from his hand, his soaked clothes, and his chin.
“You did this without notifying them; you’ve committed treason.”
The second sip is kinder as it washes down your throat, cold and scalding at the same time. You sit on the edge of your crooked desk. A sharp burst of pain in your leg reminds you that you did not come out unscathed.
“My clan.” you repeat, confused. “And who was I supposed to notify? You didn’t exactly leave any elders for me to answer to.”
His brows furrow slightly, the corners of his eyes closing momentarily as if to read a foreign language. You, on the other hand, connect the dots easily.
“Seriously?”
You can’t help the pitch of your voice going higher, giving him time to deny your unspoken assumption.
“Who did you think those Star Religious leaders were? The Kaneko clan was the backbone of the Time Vessel Association. Did you– did you not know that?”
His eyes shift between yours, searching. Why would you lie? It makes sense. Your clan positioned itself as one of the big four partly due to descending from Tengen herself. It makes sense that they had their claws in her little murderous fanclub from the very beginning.
You hold your belly, laughing despite the pain.
“That’s– that’s hilarious. You saved me many headaches. I should thank you.”
“Still.” he says, the knot between his eyebrows not giving. “You're the head of the Kaneko clan. You’ve kept this from your family.”
Worry starts to settle in you, did he hit his head or something? Surely, the world's wettest, most dangerous curse user can't be this dense.
“I’m a non-sorcerer, not to mention a woman. Do you think anyone holds me to that standard? As long as the company keeps filling their pockets, my family will stay in line, and as you can see we’re not doing too bad.”
The majority of the living members of the clan slowly excited Jujutsu Society after your grandfather passed and the Time Vessel Association went to shit. Those active hardly regard you as a leader. One thing about being the nepobaby of a clan well past its glory days is that the world will not let you forget how insignificant and purposeless your position is.
All in all, the only remarkable things left are the company your great grandfather founded a century ago and the Kaneko vault, but that's another thing entirely. You represent nothing other than a sliver of hope for the survival of the Kaneko technique. And even in that area you’re damaged goods.
"So that moving speech you delivered to the higher-ups—did it not speak honestly of your intentions?"
You indulge in another sip. They’re getting enjoyable by now. Maybe you’ll give whiskey a chance.
“What’s your angle, Golden Child?”
“You caught that, huh?” you chuckle at the nickname, your phone starts ringing but you pay it no mind. “Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not interested in your redemption arch. I just didn’t see the benefit in you letting you die.”
“So you agreed to this?”
This.
A binding vow.
Set by far with better considerations for you. If anything, you're a warden of sorts. The irony of binding him to a non-sorcerer does not escape you. The higher-ups can get poetically cruel when they want to.
One of the main conditions is that you can back out whenever you want. In which case the original sentence will proceed; execution by the strongest himself.
“You don’t trust me, I get it,” you admit, a faint understanding in the drop of your voice. It’s reasonable, you’re strangers, tethered only by a thread named Gojo Satoru. “Honestly, I wouldn’t trust me either, but you should know that I’m not the type to give up easily.”
You sound confident, like you weren’t seriously considering dropping his ass to the Jujutsu version of the lethal injection if he kept ignoring you and sucking the serotonin out of your apartment. Your phone rings again, his eyes land on the exact spot where it’s hidden.
“Is it love?” he asks, eyes knowing.
The question hangs in the air. The ice cube in your mouth shatters into tiny fragments between your clamping teeth, the cold sensation spreading across your tongue.
"Is that why you're so desperate to cater to his desires?" his eyebrows arch empathetically, concerned. You can't help but notice that you've witnessed more emotions cross his face in the last four hours than you have in an entire month.
He shakes his head gently at your silence, a disappointed click of his tongue echoing in the room.
“You know better, Sera. He’s Gojo Satoru. Nothing is impossible for him. Everything he’s ever wanted and needed in life, he’s had it. You’ll waste yours away trying to live up to a man like that.”
“Speaking from experience?”
He smiles at the floor, casting you a look that’s equal parts pity and amusement. Like you’re an insect landing on a venus flytrap.
“I like this. I like us talking, but I think we should be more serious about this.”
Your chin dips at the body on the floor. The younger intruder, hopefully just unconscious in your living room, will have to answer for both.
“Yes. Let’s be.” he agrees, extending his open palm towards you. “How about some honesty?”
Fair enough.
“I didn’t think he deserved to execute his best friend,” You concede easily. If he’s trying to play 4D chess, he’ll have better luck with whoever sent your two visitors tonight. “and who knows, maybe you didn’t deserve the easy way out either. You’re gone, leaving the rest to clean up the mess? Not fair, is it?”
“And what do you believe I deserve?”
The end of the conversation looms over you as the rain starts to give. You need to make a few calls, deal with the body, the hopefully not dead kid in your living room, and figure out what comes next before getting some much-needed sleep, which might end up being none.
And there’s something unknown to you that bleeds into his question, that tells you the curtains are closing on you for the night.
“I’m not gonna pretend to know the answer to that.” you shake your head dismissively “But I know you’re beyond giving a shit about what happens to you, so this is my promise to you; betray Gojo's decision, and I’ll make sure your family pays for your crimes.”
Live, Geto Suguru. I don’t care if you find a reason to wake up in the morning or not, you will live. You don’t get to die. You'll face this shitty, monkey riddled world for as long as you have to. I'll make sure of it.

Welcome to The Conversation About BL, aka The Brown Liquor Podcast.
Ben
And there it is. I’m Ben.
NiNi
I’m NiNi.
Ben
And we’re you’re drunk Caribbean uncle and auntie here sitting on the porch in the rocking chairs.
NiNi
Four times a year we pop in to talk about what’s going on in the BL world.
Ben
We shoot the shit about stories and all the drama going into them. I review from a queer media lens.
NiNi
And I review from a romance and drama lens.
Ben
So if you like cracked-out takes and really intense emotional analysis…
NiNi
If you like talking about artistry, industry, and the discourse…
Ben
And if you generally just love simping…
NiNi
There is a lot of simping on this podcast…
Ben
We are the show for you!
[fanfare sound]
01:23 - Introduction
Ben
And we're back. We have reviewed all of the shows under the more traditional frameworks. We've gone over which talents we were really fond of, which pairings we're really fond of, who we thought did a great job assembling a show, and what were the bangers of the year.
It's time to award the shows so good that they would have skewed the results, or in our estimation, are not primarily driven by romance in a way that makes them fit under the traditional BL criteria.
NiNi
Here in our Special Class Awards, we have three award categories, and each award category can have multiple awardees, which is why it's special. [laughs]
So our three categories are Honorable Mentions, the Sixth Man Award, and our Standout Queer Narratives Award. In Honorable Mentions, we're going to be acknowledging key contributions to the genre from various filming markets and traditions that are perhaps outside of the main and the ones that we discuss. In the Sixth Man Award, we want to acknowledge the most valuable and versatile supporting actor of the year. And under Standout Queer Narratives, we want to acknowledge queer works that are not primarily romances.
03:03 Interlude: The Beach - Moonlight (2016)
Kevin
“That breeze feel good as hell man.”
Chiron
“Yeah it do.”
Kevin
“Sometimes round the way, where we live, you can catch this same breeze. It come through the hood and it’s like everything stop for a second ‘cause everyone just wanna feel it. Everything just get quiet, you know?”
Chiron
“And it’s like all you can hear is your own heartbeat, right?”
Kevin
“Yeah…feel so good, man. “
Chiron
“So good…. “
Kevin
“Hell, shit make you want to cry, it feel so good.”
Chiron
“You cry?”
Kevin
“Nah. But it makes me want to… What you cry about?”
Chiron
“Shit, I cry so much sometimes I feel like I'ma just turn to drops.”
04:18 Honorable Mention: The Day I Loved You
NiNi
So let's start with our Honorable Mentions. And this year we have three. I'll let Ben take you through them.
Ben
The first one I want to acknowledge this year is a show from the Philippines called The Day I Loved You. [Applause sound] I don't think I ever actually managed to write about this show because you're reacting to a show that is fundamentally tragic. I remember watching it with Kyra, and we called it, like, the Nicholas Sparks BL of the year.
In this show, we have a femme boy who's kind of bullied at school but doesn't seem to care about it. He ends up developing a thing with the new hot guy at the school who's here from Singapore, and there's, like, a love triangle with his best friend. And we realize that the reason why he's been holding back romantically in this story is because he has a debilitating condition that is gonna involve him declining and losing control of his limbs and other mobility along the way. So he's leery of beginning something with someone.
The way this plays out is really beautiful. There's a richness to the way a lot of the Filipino storytelling is done that I really connect to all the time. Even when I'm not watching BL, I really like Filipino cinema when I have the opportunity to really engage with some of their work. And even though BL in the Philippines has been really struggling with the lack of investment right now.
This show is really well produced—it's available on YouTube—and takes the dynamics here very seriously. The best friend is not going to be the one who's chosen because he doesn't want his best friend, who he knows loves him, to also go through the ugliness of his decline. His suitor in this eventually pushes past some of these barriers, but the show never downplays the seriousness of Eli's condition. His condition worsens. It is not a pretty experience. But there is this beautiful amount of heart in it.
This show is the one that has stuck with me quietly all year long. I think about the show at least once a month or so, and have been trying to find a way to properly write about it. In a year where we didn't really have a lot to point to from the Philippines that we really thought a lot of folks should rally behind, this is one of the standouts that I think you all should go back and watch if you can handle a tragic romance, not unlike the experience you might have with a Nicholas Sparks movie or book.
NiNi
So, I have not seen The Day I Loved You because I feel like I am not emotionally capable of watching that right now. It's the same reason I haven't caught up on Eternal Yesterday. There are some things that I'm holding in reserve because I don't think that I have the emotional bandwidth or capacity to handle right now. But I was sort of following along while you and Kyra were doing your watch, and I am looking forward to getting around to it when I have the emotional wherewithal to stand up to the tragedy, because I do sometimes enjoy—I guess ‘enjoy’ is a strange word—but enjoy a good tragic romance.
I tend to enjoy work from the Philippines, especially when the production quality lines up with the ideas they're trying to espouse. And so, given everything that you've said about it to me up until now, it's on my list. I just don't know when I'm going to get to it.
Ben
I think the production quality is about where The Boy Foretold by the Stars is. It's slightly under Gameboys.
NiNi
I think that's a good spot to land.
Ben
The music's good, like the song that they selected for the intro is a banger. It's called Sweet + Wild by YANCO—such an excellent song.
NiNi
I love Filipino music, as you are well aware, so really looking forward to that.
Ben
It's a really excellently put together little production. There's a lot of heart in the story and it takes its characters and its conceits really seriously, in a way that I found really compelling. And I continue to be really impressed with the way the Philippines explores Catholicism and Christianity inside of BL. It's one of the unique things that the Philippines can do, and I like that they do it well consistently.
NiNi
It's one of the things that draws me to them as well, being a lapsed Catholic myself. Lapsed? Former? What's the terminology these days? Having grown up Catholic, it's one of the things that does draw me to the Philippines, and I feel like I understand a lot of what they are getting into in their narratives and in their characters because of that.
Ben
The Day I Loved You from Regal Entertainment, directed by Easy Ferrer, starring Tommy Alejandrino as Nico, Raynald Tan as Eli, and Rabin Josh as Justine.
10:26 Honorable Mention: Chen Yi and Ai Di
NiNi
Our next Honorable Mention award is not for a show. It is for a couple coming out of Taiwan from the show Kiseki: Dear To Me, Chen Yi and Ai Di. [Applause sound] It has been a long time, for me anyway, since a side couple completely took over the show from the main couple to the point that I'm kind of only slightly sure what happened to the [laughs] main couple on Kiseki? But I know for sure what happened to Chen Yi and Ai Di. [laughs]
Kiseki was a mixed bag. It was a strange year from Taiwan. Nothing really landed. They did quite a bit that I ended up, in the end, not watching. I think Ben, you watched most of it?
Ben
Unfortunately.
NiNi
It was a very strange year. The only thing that drew me in was Kiseki and then, it was a strange show. I didn't expect something like that from Lin Pei Yu. But the light in the tunnel was definitely Chen Yi and Ai Di, played by Nat Chen and Louis Chiang.
They play orphans who basically grew up inside the mafia. Chen Yi thinks he's in love with the mafia boss, while Ai Di is in love with Chen Yi. Hijinks ensue. Let's just put it that way. Hijinks ensue. And then Ai Di goes to jail for four years, but before he goes to jail, he and Chen Yi have sex while Chen Yi is, shall we say, altered? And then Ai Di goes to jail and Chen Yi is left with his feelings trying to sort of understand how he feels and where he stands with Ai Di. Then when Ai Di gets out of jail, he's pissed, and trying to keep his distance from Chen Yi. But Chen Yi has now realized how in love he is, and he's not gonna let that stand.
It is one of the crackheads ships I've ever seen. But also kind of delightful in a way? [laughs] But the important thing is that they really took over the show. I don't mean that in a critical way. I mean that of all the things that were happening on Kiseki, they were easily the most interesting.
Ben
So it was a weird year for Taiwan and part of why I wanted to talk about these two is because there's just been less activity from Taiwan and the BL front. Some of that has to do with a lot of complicating factors [laughs] we won't get into on this podcast. But in all the things released—quick aside, there is an interesting project happening right now in Taiwan in that the Friday Taiwanese BLs are being produced by a single company doing a dedicated for BL project. I don't think it's been that great personally, but it's rare that we get dedicated BL commitment in a time slot, and while I don't think the projects have been really strong, the things that Taiwan is good at remain. Like, the overall cast chemistry from Taiwan still remains the best. They are very good at getting the whole cast to believably play off of each other, even in characters who only interact once or twice in the whole show. It is always impressive and especially with the romantic and sexual chemistry. I enjoy the paired chemistry of actors from Taiwan, more [than] the other BL producing countries more often than not.
In this particular show, I think both couples had really strong performances as couples with each other. And we ended up focusing on Ai Di and Chen Yi a lot because they're the mafia boys and Louis Chiang's character wears a choker the whole time, and is always trying to murder someone, and he's shorter than everyone, and everyone loves that! Every time I see this boy getting a little bit mad, I'm like, yes! Kill them!
But they were really good. And it was funny, like, the show shifts towards the back half where we spend a great deal of time focusing on them, and they get the final shot of the show. It's so weird! This side couple legitimately won. I'm just amazed by that choice.
NiNi
A choice it definitely was. With all that said, Honorable Mention award to Chen Yi and Ai Di from Kiseki: Dear to Me from Taiwan, played by Nat Chen and Louis Chiang.
15:44 Honorable Mention: Sasake and Miyano: Graduation
NiNi
The third and final Honorable Mention award this year goes to an anime project. Sasaki and Miyano: Graduation. [applause sound]
Ben, lead the way.
Ben
Okay! Let's talk about anime. So, yaoi is old, a lot older than people realize. We have art made by, we suspect to be women, going as far back as the 1400s, of guys sucking each others dicks. This is not a new phenomenon. At all.
And so, when we're talking about, like, what is BL doing, what is BL, where is BL going? A big question is always what is happening on the written front? What novels are popular in various cultures, and in, for Japan in particular, it's going to be manga. A significant amount of content is adapted directly from manga because manga is already successful, it has a built in fan base, and the manga itself serves as a storyboard and it's very easy to win fans over by taking popular panels and recreating them on screen for maximum impact. What's also notable is, when something is doing really well, it's going to get an anime adaptation. Anime is far more expensive to produce than live action content.
So, Sasaki and Miyano is a story about these guys in high school. One is a little bit older and is going to be graduating soon. His name is Sasaki and he helps Miyano in an instant where these guys are bullying one of Miyano’s friends, and Miyano wants to jump in. Sasaki sees that Miyano wants to help, and he jumps in to help, kind of gets his ass whipped anyway, but the two of them start hanging out.
Sasaki learns pretty early on that Miyano is a fudanshi—this is the boy version of a fujoshi—he reads BL all the time. He is one of us. But he doesn't think of himself as queer at the beginning of this. Sasaki ends up becoming very fond of Miyano, starts reading BL because it's very important to Miyano, and a relationship blossoms between them. Where this particular show is fascinating for me is because Miyano is a fudanshi, and Sasaki is not. And this is evinced most notably in the movie that released this year: Graduation, where Miyano’s understanding of what m/m romance is supposed to look like is influenced by BL, and we get this really incredible moment in the movie where after sorting through some of their stuff, they're having this moment that is sexually charged. And Miyano, who's shorter than Sasaki, and because he's more petite, a lot of people might expect him to be the uke-slash-bottom in this instance, he stops the moment that they're having and says, “I'm not an uke.” And this is also backed by the fact that Miyano does not have uke hair [laughs] but Sasaki does.
NiNi
[laughs] I know what that is now.
Ben
It also gets confused because Sasaki has yaoi hands.
NiNi
Okay, wait, pause. What are yaoi hands?
Ben
So whenever you're watching yaoi—animated yaoi—seme my hands are fucking enormous, because they want you to focus on their fingers and stuff, so their hands are fucking enormous.
NiNi
Listen, the things I learn on this show.
Ben
It's interesting because Sasaki, who just recognizes his attraction to Miyano, and maybe knew about himself already—it's a little unclear on that front. He doesn't care what position Miyano wants him to take, he just wants to be with Miyano. It's not that explicit, like the show's not going to point the camera at us and go, “Let's break down and talk about the [laughs] social politics of BL and how it impacts the youths’ maturation.” But it's apparent that it's one of the things it's thinking about because we get this really excellent presentation through Miyano, who is struggling to contextualize their relationship because his primary framework for understanding relationships between two men is formed by BL, which is not a great source, obviously [laughs] for this ‘cause BL is fictional, and is trying to just have fun with a lot of readers preconceptions of stuff. So, we get to watch them figure out what their relationship is going to be while deconstructing some BL presumptions. And it's a really enjoyable experience watching this really adorable little show.
NiNi
My brain is still stuck on yaoi hands.
Ben
All right, legit. Legit. You can pause right now and you can go Google yaoi hands. It's a whole thing.
NiNi
I believe you. [laughs] I'm gonna wait until after the show. So…
Ben
Ginny is in the fucking transcript right now Googling ‘yaoi hands.’
[both laugh]
NiNi
Ginny, I don't know if I should say I'm sorry or you're welcome.
Ben
The third and final award goes to Sasaki and Miyano, developed by Studio Dean.
21:41 Sixth Man: Mark Pakin Kuna-anuvit
NiNi
Our next category of awards is the Sixth Man Award. We are going to name the Sixth Man award for its inaugural awardee, and the inaugural Sixth Man awardee is one Khun Mark Pakin Kuna-anuvit. [fanfare sound] Mark Pakin, the most valuable and versatile supporting actor of the year. So this award shall forever be known after this as the Mark Pakin Sixth Man Award.
Bestie, I want you to go first here. Why is Mark Pakin not just our inaugural winner, but why is this award being named after him?
Ben
It's easy to get caught up in the ships, and the leads, and all the actors, and the big romance parts. But a big part of any successful story is going to be how well the lead characters play off of their supporting characters. It's notable when you look at Mark's credits since 2021, when he first appeared in a small role in I Promised You the Moon, since then every single show he's been in has been one of the highlight shows of the year.
Mark was in Bad Buddy, My School President, The Warp Effect, Moonlight Chicken, Only Friends, and now Last Twilight. Mark picks good projects and he makes them better because he can play whatever is needed of him in each of these shows. And because, as NiNi says, I bring the lore, when you watch the behind the scenes stuff and what people say about Mark, he is a huge presence behind the scenes helping manage morale and the overall mood of the set when he's present. Mark is working even when the camera is not in front of him, and making sure people are taken care of, and making sure people are grounded, and making sure that people stay in the right headspace so that they can do the work. And it clearly pays off.
Mark is really talented and you can feel how effective he was as one of the oldest actors on My School President in particular, and helping Gemini in a lot of his scenes. Mark plays so well with Fourth in Moonlight Chicken. Mark has a couple of moments with Earth in Moonlight Chicken that I still think about, like particularly the scene where Saleng receives the dowry gift from Jim, or the scene where he's leaving in, like, episode one and he's kind of shuffling out of the place. Or even just his goofy ass showing up at the end now that he's moved into, like, a value position at the water park he's working at.
Like, it's so incredible to watch Mark work whenever he's on screen. You are just so excited that he's back on screen and he does that completely from a supporting role. He is doing a great job without stealing the show or the scene from the other people that are in it. No disrespect to some of the other actors out there who are really talented, but they can't help but chew the scenery and take over every moment that they're in. Mark is really good at dialing in his performance to exactly where it needs to be in any scene, any moment. He can go really high or really low. He can go big or small as needed, and then turn it on a dime. And it's so impressive to watch. It's notable that every show he's been in has rated highly with audiences. And I just at this point find it hard to not see a pattern with his presence, and people's general love of his characters, and the shows and the storylines around where his character is involved.
NiNi
This year I watched Mark's play—technically six, if you consider the Our Skyy: My School President AU?
Ben
Kind of counts. We'll call it six. We had six different versions of Mark Pakin on our screen this year.
NiNi
And all of them were different. Every single one of them was different. And if you expand out to his other roles, every role that he has ever played, he is a different person. I do not know how he does that. I talked in the Moonlight Chicken episode about how loose he plays as Saleng. His body language is loose. The way that he speaks is loosened. It's such a different version of him that comes up as Nick in Only Friends. You can feel some of the anxiety that comes off of Nick. You can feel his vulnerability. Compare that to Tiwson in My School President, who is nothing if not confident. Ultimately, utterly confident. Every single role that he plays is just different. Physically, he acts differently. He sounds different. The way that he interacts with the other characters becomes different. He is building these characters right in front of our eyes, almost in a weird way, in real time. And then when you see him off the clock—well, not off the clock—but when you see him behind the scenes and you see him just sort of being Mark, that's a completely different person, too.
I am not the lore person, Ben is the lore person. But I did happen to see within the last couple of days a conversation on some one of these variety shows between Mark and Namtan. And Namtan is talking about being on the Last Twilight set and working with Film on the upcoming GL Pluto. And the way that Mark interacts with Namtan, and the way that they discuss acting, and the way that he supports her in those moments in the variety show. Like, he's kind of interviewing her but also praising her. I just think about what it's like to have somebody like Mark in your corner on set. And he did this too, we saw, in some of the behind the scenes on Only Friends. There's a particular one that I'm thinking of where Force played a fairly difficult emotional scene. And after the scene was over, Mark was there to say, “Yeah, guy, that was really good.” And to discuss in detail and specificity what about the way the that Force acted in that take really worked.
Ben
He was gassing Force up, and Force was eating it up. He was a little shy about it, but Mark came in and was yelling at this man. He's like, “You did amazing! You fucking crushed that, dude!”
NiNi
Mark is what I like to call an actor's actor. I don't know what else to say about this dude. He's only 25. There is so much ahead of him.
Ben
He's playing a very serious character on Last Twilight right now, and I remember seeing in one of the early behind the scenes things Aof was talking about Mark and he's like, “We weren't sure what was going on. Like, Mark was playing the scene and we were like, wait, what's going on? Mark Pakin’s on screen but we're not laughing or smiling.” And they asked Mark about it and he's like, “Well, I'm not playing a comedic character. Like, this is pretty—it's a pretty sad character, guys.”
NiNi
One of the stories of this year, I think that we're going to get into a little bit in the year in review, is people finally putting some goddamn respect on some comedic actors' names. Because, guys comedy is hard. It is so hard. It is harder in certain ways than playing drama. And so when you get a really good, really good comedic actor, you should know off the bat that they're gonna be good at drama, because it's just easier. Mark Pakin is a really fucking good comedic actor. I don't know where this kid came from.
Ben
Nadao Bangkok.
NiNi
Well, yes, there was that. [both laugh] He's only 25. He's got so much ahead of him. But in terms of what's already behind him, gotta give him props for that. And that is why he is both the inaugural Sixth Man award awardee and is going to be the person after whom this award is named going forward. So congratulations to Mark Pakin Kuna-anuvit.
Ben
We're big fans of yours, Mark, if you ever hear this. Please keep working. We love everything you're doing, and I'm really glad you committed to acting.
NiNi
I genuinely cannot wait to see what this kid does next.
31:33 Standout Queer Narrative: Moonlight Chicken
NiNi
We are now in the Standout Queer Narratives category of our Special Class awards. These three shows are chosen because while they might be in genre, they're not really of genre.
Ben
So, BL is a romance genre. The thrust of BL is about the romantic relationship at its core, and seeing it to completion. You go to a BL and you expect the very pretty boys in the intro to flirt with each other a bunch and eventually sort out their dramas and pair up by the end. Sometimes we're dramatic and they don't pair up, but we come to the genre because we want to see the cute boys get together. There's a big difference between a queer drama and a queer romance. And BL is romance. And so if you're wondering where Moonlight Chicken was  [fanfare sound] [laughs] for the last week with us, it's why it's here. We talked about this in our episode, which you can go listen to. We praised it for, like, an hour and a half.
Moonlight Chicken is a family drama. The only ‘I love you’ said in the whole show is between Jim and Li Ming. The relationship between Wen and Jim is important, but it's primarily about how Jim's queer experience has further weakened the version of his life he thought he was building, and how Wen is an opportunity for him to not perpetually punish himself for the way certain things went wrong. It is important to the story but their romance is part of the drama around the diner, and the people who are connected to Jim. Like, Saleng and Praew are not a side couple, and I wouldn't even classify Heart and Li Ming as a side couple in this. They are just one of the dynamics that's being explored in this show, and it has resonance with Jim because Li MIng is Jim’s son in all but name. And so that's the crux of the whole story here.
Moonlight Chicken is truly fantastic, and I don't know that if we put Moonlight Chicken under the traditional scope we were doing in the award show that it would have won in every category it was in, but it would have probably superseded a lot of these just because of the scope of the project. That is not fair to the other shows, because the other shows are operating under the presumptions of romance as a genre.
It may feel like we're splitting hairs to some of you, and I'm sorry I can't make it more clear or explain this better. But we don't like to put bad bitches up against each other [NiNi laughs] on this podcast.
NiNi
Not even in our awards shows.
Ben
Like our award shows are really about, like, these are the top two projects that we really like the most. We give them awards because it's more dramatic for us to fight over who's better than the other one. But it isn't good to put a project like Moonlight Chicken up against the other shows that we talked about earlier this week with you all.
NiNi, any other things you want to add for Moonlight Chicken, since we've already gushed over the show once this year.
NiNi
I mean, we spent—unedited—close to three hours talking about Moonlight Chicken. I don't know what I can say that I haven't already said about this show. It is not primarily a romance. There are some parts of the audience that kind of bounced off of it or bounced off parts of it. And that's because it's not a romance. And that's okay if you come to this genre expecting romance, and you see Moonlight Chicken and you're just kind of like, “Oh, I don't know.” I'm going to judge you a little bit, but ultimately, yeah, you're right. It's not a romance. What it is is a haunting, absolutely haunting examination of love and loss and family and intergenerational trauma. It's about community. It's about coming to terms with yourself at literally every stage of being. Coming to terms with yourself in your youth, coming to terms with yourself as you start to become a real adult, coming to terms with yourself in your middle age. I have no more words, so I'm not going to try.
Ben
It has Mark Pakin in it!
NiNi
[laughs] If you haven't watched this and you like things like Parenthood or Friday Night Lights.
Ben
Aging ourselves immediately.
NiNi
Go watch it.
Ben
It is our Standout Queer Narrative as the family drama of the year that we were most enamored by.
NiNi
Moonlight Chicken produced and aired by GMMTV, starring Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri and Mix Sahaphap Wongratch among others, including the Sixth Man Mark Pakin, and directed by Aof Noppharnach Chaiyahwimhon.
38:02 Standout Queer Narrative: The Warp Effect
Ben
Our next show that we wanted to talk about was The Warp Effect [fanfare sound] as our after-school special [laughs] show of the year. It also has Mark Pakin in it!
NiNi
[laughs] This is not a coincidence. I think Ben is right. I think that putting Mark Pakin in your show automatically raises the level.
Ben
So, despite our [laughs] mixed bag of Jojo shows this year, he and NiNew did a really good job on The Warp Effect, exploring the social politics of sex, and how they impact people even 10 years later for the things you do in high school. I think they did a good job with the sex ed 101 component of it. You could see some of Jojo's Gay OK, Bangkok roots coming back there. And it was a lot of fun seeing Jojo work with a large cast of men and women talking about the way sex worked for them, how it didn't necessarily always work for some of them. And it was so legible! Like, it was amazing to me from week-to-week how much recall I had of that show from week-to-week, ‘cause that show was packed. It had like three to five threads it was juggling in every single episode, and yet I was still able to hold them from week to week—and as you all know, I watch too much. So, the likelihood that I forget stuff is high.
It was so much fun to watch this for the 12 weeks it was on.
NiNi
One of the things that I think it did really well is balance its themes with its narrative. I think that a lot of shows this year sort of failed at that balance. I think The Warp Effect was probably the strongest at doing that all year. It doesn't fall into the BL categories because it's not a BL.
Ben
The main character is literally straight.
NiNi
But we wanted to acknowledge all the things that it did really well, and also acknowledge that it was a very queer narrative, because the main character, yes, is straight and he has straight problems. But within the show we have a gay couple, a lesbian couple, Mark Pakin in a relationship with a trans woman.
Ben
Who Mark made blush all the time. [both laugh]
NiNi
Again, that behind the scenes stuff he's so good at. We had couples involved in kink, which kink is not technically queer, but they're definitely in the vicinity.
Ben
They're getting their asses beat with us on the streets. They count.
NiNi
We've got an aromantic character. We've got bisexuals, we've got everybody in this show. It is super queer in only the way a Jojo show can really be. And it was just fun to watch. It is an after school special that did not feel preachy. It was lighthearted where it needed to be. It was serious where it needed to be. It's a great show and definitely one of the standout great narratives of the year.
The Warp Effect produced and aired by GMMTV. Starring everybody you can think of [laughs], directed by Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong.
41:30 Standout Queer Narrative: What Did You Eat Yesterday? 2
NiNi
Our final Standout Queer Narrative award, and our final Special Class award goes to the granddaddy of this podcast. It’s What Did You Eat Yesterday? Season 2, guys. [fanfare sound] Do we even need to explain this?
Ben
The only thing that could have possibly made What Did You Eat Yesterday? 2 better was if Mark Pakin was somehow involved with it.
[both laugh]
NiNi
I can’t stand you. So What Did You Eat Yesterday? falls into the slice-of-life genre. We would have talked about What Did You Eat Yesterday? ad nauseam in our Om Nom Nom episode, which you would have heard if the editing is right… last week… sometime?
Ben
Oh my God.
NiNi
[laughs] Don't quote me on that. Listen guys, the editing is…it's gonna be what it is. So we would have waxed poetic about this show for, at the very least, an hour.
Ben
And you've already heard Ginny’s supercut of me mentioning the show unprompted all year long.
NiNi
You would have definitely heard Ben, bringing up What Did You Eat Yesterday? every chance he gets in our holiday clip show.
This show is amazing. Nishijima and Uchino are amazing. I did not expect to get more What Did You Eat Yesterday? this year. The fact that we got it is a gift.
Ben
This season 2 picks up a little bit after the movie. Shiro and Kenji been together for about eight years now, and we continue with more stories about their lives. The big theme for this season: they are dealing with the fact that they are in their 50s now. They're getting older and they're going through physical and emotional changes, and there are changes going on in their personal, professional, and family lives that they also have to manage as well.
This show remains kind of unique. BL is romance. It’s focused on people getting together. What What Did You Eat Yesterday? is focused on as a slice-of-life food drama, is about a couple staying together and dealing with the things that come up in their lives. Less than a handful of shows allow us to return to characters and see how they're doing and if they're going to make it and stick together. And What Did You Eat Yesterday? is so important in that regard, not just because it's about a long-term relationship. It's also about older gay men. And it's super important that we conceive of the idea that there are older gay couples. We do get to grow old with each other. That's also–and marriage equality is important. You want your boys to grow old together? There are gays who are old right now. You deserve to see gays getting older together and doing their best for each other.
What a lovely season we had because everybody got to grow this season. We got to see Shiro take on more professional responsibility than he was maybe willing to. Kenji got to grow professionally as well. Wataru was still a bitch the whole time, but he feels like a friend now?
[both laugh]
NiNi
I'm still creasin’ over the 50 balloon. [laughs] Oh God, that was such bitchy energy. I love it.
Ben
I just love how at this point, Kohinata and Wataru feel like their friends. And that was so important for me that we got to see them having a relationship with another gay couple. Kenji finally got to meet Kayoko this season. What a delight that was.
NiNi
And Kayoko treating him like a celebrity when she runs into him in the grocery store. So fun. Great, phenomenal, fantastic show anchored by some of the best performances by two of the greats.
Ben
Man, that's another thing we should talk about. The-the other reason why we need older gay characters: we deserve to see more veteran actors in the genre. This is not a knock on the young and up-and-coming talent or the OGs who are still doin’ the work. We deserve to see veteran actors bringing veteran-level talent to this genre more often than we do.
NiNi
What Did You Eat Yesterday? produced and aired by TV Tokyo, starring Nishijima Hidetoshi and Uchino Seiyou. You have won the coveted standout Queer Narrative Special Class award from The Conversation.
46:54 Outro
That is going to wrap us up on the 2023 Very Important Internet BL Awards, the VIIB Awards. It's kind of sad to see this go, but we will be back with the VIIB Awards next year when we get to discuss a whole new bunch of stuff.
Looking forward to it. With that, we out.
Say “bye” to the people, Ben.
Ben
Peace!

"I think Infanta Sofia might want to be an actress or possibly director. It was revealed in video released for King Felipe’s 50th birthday that she was in a play. This summer she and Queen Letizia reportedly met Chris Hemsworth. And next week she’s going to be at the Princess of Asturias Awards, even though it’s on Thursday and Friday, school days and it’s not her school holidays yet, and Meryl Streep is one of this year’s awardees and there will be a big exhibition of her Filmography in Oviendo. I mean it won’t be a surprise her maternal aunt and cousin are actresses and in her father side there’s Princess Theodora and Prince Achilles." - Submitted by Anonymous

Photographed by Gabriel Nivera for the May 2024 Issue of Vogue Philippines.
[Bundos Bansil Fara] is one of the three Tboli artists who were recognized as Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) or National Living Treasures in December 2023. The award is given to Filipinos whose “distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation.” … This is the first time a brass caster has been awarded since the GAMABA’s inception in 1992.
Brass casting is a skill learnt from one’s forebears, and Fara’s father and grandfather were all metalworkers. “I started in the process of brass casting when I was eight years old,” Fara says. Now 58, he has been working with molten materials for half a century. “My eyesight has gotten blurry.” Fortunately, he has a team of four sons working with him—one will be melting the wax, a mixture of beeswax, candle wax, and asphalt that forms a black putty; another will be tending to the blazing hot fires, fanning coals inside two holes in the ground, one for melting the metals, another for firing the clay molds.
Ginton is the Tboli god of metallurgy and the son of the supreme being Dwata. It is believed that he gifted the people with brass anklets, chain belts, rings, and swords—all of which still intricately adorn, protect, and tell the story of the Tboli today. As for the beginnings of brass, Fr. Gabriel Casal notes in his book T’Boli Art in its Socio-Cultural Context (1977), “The T’bolis give no indication of having ever possessed any knowledge of mining their own metals. These, they seem to have always obtained from old broken agong (gongs) or any of their other metal objects that break, and which they melt and re-employ for new substitutes.”
The recycling/upcycling of metals is still how Fara and other brass casters source their materials today. “We would melt down old gongs to create new items, but now there are many other things we can find at the junk shop, like padlocks, bullet shells, pipes.” The products they make are not strictly made of brass, but an alloy of brass, bronze, steel, and whatever else can be liquified in Fara’s smoldering hot pot.

Speech by Princess Leonor at the Princess of Asturias Awards 2023
I would like to be able to easily express what I feel on a day like today, here in Oviedo, after having taken the oath of service to Spain before our flag just two weeks ago. And after having started my military training, which is allowing me to share continuous learning with people who have chosen a life of service with great demands and personal sacrifices. Furthermore, on the 31st I will turn 18 and I will have the honor of taking my oath of allegiange to the Constitution, with what that means for me personally and institutionally. What I can tell you is that I very well understand and am aware of what my duty is and what my responsibilities entail. As Honorary President of this Foundation, one of them is to understand and value what our awardees contribute to a society where many generations live together with the idea of ensuring that those who need it most have the opportunity to improve their lives, their education, their health; and that science, culture and environmental protection are a priority. We can only achieve this with common objectives and individual and collective effort. By knowing the immense legacy of Nuccio Ordine, how he managed to humanize humanity and his defense of teachers, I understand why education is the foundation of any society that aims to be better. And with Meryl Streep's films, I see how a great artist can strip herself away to make room for her characters and dilute herself in her emotions. And to do so, furthermore, throughout an impeccable career and with freedom, courage and sensitivity to the challenges of our time. Hélène Carrère's contribution to the analysis of contemporary history and the efforts of the Mary's Meal organization to feed children in their schools are also examples of those who understand that it is necessary to get involved to help improve things. I admire that Murakami has built his own universe with words for decades, in which East and West are portrayed in urban and often challenging environments. And I also observe with enthusiasm the eagerness of the Kenyan athlete Kipchoge to overcome his limits and always continue working to achieve his goal and, also, be supportive. Biologists Gordon, Greenberg and Bassler amaze me with their studies on the bacteria that live in our body and how essential they are for health and life. And the work of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative is reflected in these words from its executive director: there are diseases that affect a quarter of the world's population and that represent one percent of research. Today there are people present on this stage with whom I aspire to feel identified, although they are a few decades older than me. Because I feel that they transmit, with their actions and in their works, that hope that guides and inspires us young people. I want to thank all our winners, also those who have left us. For that light they project on the challenges and complexity of the world in which we live. And for ensuring that the awards that bear my name encourage us to follow a shared and hopeful path, without shirking efforts and with responsibility. Thank you very much.
