Adeline and her family moved to Tennessee a year ago, seeking a chance for better medical care, and found it here in our community. Doctors in Tennessee have saved her life — now, she needs our help to start living it.
Despite the brilliant light she brings into this world, Adeline endures daily suffering living in her body due to a genetic disorder and multiple medical conditions. In the past two years of her life she has been confined to a bed. This is on top of a lifetime of hospital admissions, ICU stays, and loss of everyday functional abilities, taking away her childhood.
Adeline’s genetic disorder has taken her sight, twisted her legs leaving her unable to walk, and ruined her ability to eat or drink by mouth. At this time, she does not have the ability to get out of her bed. To receive nutrition, she is attached to a central line in her chest. She is also given medication continuously through this central line in addition to a feeding tube to keep her alive. Adeline’s multitude of medications keep her from anaphylaxis, as well as give her pain control from nerve pain, daily dislocations, bruising, spine and neck instability, and tissue fragility that compromises her body on a daily basis.
Adeline’s family continually fights for her quality of life, but insurance companies often deny requests that would give Adeline what she desperately needs.
Here is how you can help:
Adeline’s needs and the estimated prices:
1. — A hospital bed $40,000
2. — A lift to get out of her bed and into her wheelchair $3,000
3. — A paved driveway and ramp $7,000
4. — A modified van with a lift (where she can lay down in her wheelchair) $60,000
5. — New eSight goggles $10,000
These are more details on why Adeline needs these things to give her independence, and a better quality of life:
Perhaps the most imperative on this list is the hospital bed, which would help the positioning of Adeline’s delicate body and daily medical procedures, as well as prevent aspiration pneumonia hospitalizations. This bed can be tilted up and down for Adeline’s comfort and care. It can also be lowered and raised for her caregiver’s needs in assisting her.
This bed would give her mom the ability to safely take care of Adeline’s daily needs. Adeline’s mom has the same genetic disorder, and recently injured her spine, which was compounded from the daily physical assistance Adeline requires.
Adeline also needs a special lift that keeps her body flat so she can get into her reclined power wheelchair. At the moment, she is only able to get into her wheelchair if she is lifted carefully by 4 to 5 strong adults who can safely move her without injuring her neck and spine. They also must make sure that her central line is not harmed during the process.
To get to vital medical appointments and specialists, her family needs a vehicle with a lift. Right now, Adeline cannot leave her home without an ambulance.
Without a medical team and ambulance, Adeline is totally confined to the bottom floor of their home. A paved driveway would allow for safe transport, as well as access to the main floor of her house. Currently, if company comes over, they must come to her to visit. A paved driveway would give her the independence to move more freely in and out of her own home.
Finally, Adeline is blind, and she relies on an expensive technology called eSight. Her glasses are now in need of repair and must be replaced. This is the only way Adeline can see. These glasses also give Adeline the ability to be an artist, a skill which she has passionately crafted and cultivated for years. For Adeline to have her eSight updated would not only be a blessing but would also greatly boost her quality of life, and the beauty in her world.
It brings us to tears hearing Adeline’s story, and her family’s daily fight to get the quality of life we would all want our children to have.
You can help Adeline have a quality of life worth living! Let’s come together and make this happen!
Thank you for your donation and sharing our link!

Student Loan Company Revamps DSA for Better Support
Tumblr media
The Student Loans Company (SLC) has made a significant leap forward in supporting students with disabilities by launching an improved Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) service model. This initiative is designed to revolutionize the accessibility of support, making the process more streamlined and efficient for students. Additionally, by simplifying the steps needed to obtain necessary aid, the SLC aims to ensure that students can concentrate on their studies with minimal bureaucratic distractions.
Understanding the DSA
What is the Disabled Students’ Allowance? The Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is a grant designed to help cover the extra study-related costs students might face due to a disability, mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty. Unlike student loans, DSA does not need to be repaid and is tailored to meet individual needs.   Who is Eligible? DSA is available to UK students undergoing higher education who can prove they have a disability or learning difficulty that affects their ability to study. Furthermore, this includes a wide range of conditions, from physical disabilities to mental health issues and long-term health conditions.
Streamlining the DSA Experience
A Unified Approach for Enhanced Support The SLC's partnership with Capita and Study Tech introduces a streamlined process for delivering needs assessments, assistive technology, and subsequent training. Moreover, this model offers students a single point of contact, dramatically simplifying the journey from application to the receipt of support.   Simplified Application Process The revamped service aims to make the application process as straightforward as possible. Once an application is approved by the SLC, students will be assigned to either Capita or Study Tech, depending on their location. These suppliers will then be responsible for coordinating all the support services, from assessing needs to delivering the necessary technology and training.
The Vision Behind the Service
Executive Insights Jackie Currie, Executive Director at SLC, emphasizes the organization's dedication to improving customer service. Furthermore, the enhanced DSA service model is a reflection of this commitment, aiming to provide a smoother and more efficient path for students accessing their allowances. She said, “We are committed to continuing to improve the service we deliver to customers. I am pleased we are launching the improved service, which is a real step change for how DSA is delivered. We are working with our suppliers, Capita and Study Tech, as well as a range of stakeholders, and from the outset, students will experience a much smoother journey to receiving their DSA, which is the most important element of these reforms. “This is an important milestone but there is much more work to do, with further customer improvements taking place throughout this year.”   Supplier Contributions Capita and Study Tech express their enthusiasm about their role in delivering this critical service. Their goal is to empower learners by improving access to education, promising innovative improvements to enhance the DSA service further.
The Impact on Students
Reducing Administrative Burdens By addressing past criticisms of a complex and lengthy application process, the new service model aims to eliminate unnecessary administrative burdens. Consequently, this significant change allows students to devote more time and energy to their academic pursuits.   Ensuring Quality and Accountability With the SLC's oversight and a formal performance management system in place, students can expect high-quality service that meets their specific needs. Additionally, this framework ensures that Capita and Study Tech adhere to strict standards, guaranteeing that students receive the best possible support.
Opening Doors to Inclusive Education
The SLC's enhanced DSA service model marks a pivotal step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible higher education landscape. By addressing the specific needs of disabled students, the SLC not only enhances their academic experience but also empowers them to achieve their full potential. As the service continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly become an integral part of supporting diversity and inclusivity within the UK's educational system.   Expanding Awareness and Accessibility Looking ahead, the SLC plans to increase awareness about the DSA and its benefits, ensuring that all eligible students, regardless of their background or circumstances, receive information about the support available to them. This effort to expand accessibility and awareness is crucial for maximizing the impact of the DSA and ensuring that no student misses out due to a lack of resources or information.

Unleashing the Power of Play: The Numerous Benefits of Play-Based Pediatric Occupational Therapy
As pediatric occupational therapists, we know that children learn and develop through play. Play not only allows children to have fun, but it also helps them develop the skills they need for daily activities and function. This is why play-based Occupational Therapy (OT) has become a popular approach among therapists and parents alike as it offers a range of benefits for children. Let’s dive in deeper to explore some of the key benefits of play-based OT.
1. Improves Motor Skills
Play-based OT is a great way to improve a child's motor skills, including both gross and fine motor skills. By incorporating various activities into therapy sessions, such as building blocks, playing with playdough, catching and throwing a ball, or crawling under an obstacle course, children can improve their coordination, balance, and strength. This can help them with daily activities such as dressing, feeding, and writing.
2. Enhances Cognitive Skills
Play-based OT can also help children improve their cognitive skills such as problem-solving, planning, and organization. By engaging children in activities such as puzzles, memory games, and board games, children can improve their attention, memory, and processing skills. This can help them with school-related tasks like reading, writing, and math.
3. Boosts Self-Esteem
Play-based therapy can be an excellent way to boost a child's self-esteem and confidence. By providing a safe and supportive environment where they can be creative and explore different materials and activities, children can experience success and accomplishment. This can help them feel more confident in their abilities and encourage them to try new things.
4. Facilitates Socialization
Play-based therapy sessions also offer children the opportunity to socialize and interact with others, which is an essential aspect of their development. In group sessions, for example, children can learn how to share, take turns, and collaborate with others while engaging in different activities. This can also help children improve their communication skills and develop relationships with peers.
5. Customizable to Individual Needs
Play-based therapy is customizable to each child's unique needs. Play-based sessions can be tailored to target specific skills and areas of weakness, whether it's fine motor skills, sensory processing, or social skills. This way, each child can receive a personalized approach that meets their specific needs and goals.

Enhancing Independence for People with Dementia or Brain Injuries
It is estimated that at least 850,000 people in the UK are living with Dementia and with our ever-growing population now living longer this is a matter that will continue to grow. Assistive technologies have the potential to significantly enhance the independence and quality of life for individuals with dementia or brain injuries. Around two thirds of doctors say they would like to be able to prescribe assistive technologies to their patients.
These innovative tools and devices can compensate for cognitive and physical impairments, facilitate daily activities, and promote safety. In this article, we will explore various assistive technologies that can empower individuals with dementia or brain injuries, allowing them to maintain independence and improve their overall well-being.
Here are 10 examples of assistive technologies and how they work:
Reminder Systems: Electronic reminder systems, such as medication reminders, appointment notifications, and task prompts, can help individuals with cognitive impairments stay organised and manage their daily routines effectively. These systems can be in the form of alarms, smart phone apps, or voice-activated devices.
2. GPS Tracking Devices: GPS tracking devices can enhance safety for individuals with dementia or brain injuries who may be prone to wandering or getting lost. These devices can be worn discreetly and provide real-time location information, allowing caregivers or family members to locate them quickly if needed.
3. Smart Home Technology: Smart home devices and automation can assist individuals with cognitive or physical limitations in managing various aspects of their home environment. Voice-activated assistants, smart thermostats, automated lighting, and remote-controlled appliances can provide convenience, energy efficiency, and increased accessibility.
4. Electronic Medication Dispensers: Automated medication dispensers can help individuals with memory difficulties adhere to their medication schedules. These devices dispense the correct medication doses at specific times, often accompanied by visual or auditory reminders, reducing the risk of medication errors.
5. Memory Aid Apps: Mobile applications specifically designed for individuals with memory impairments can assist with task management, memory recall, and daily reminders. These apps may include features like interactive calendars, to-do lists, photo albums, and voice recording capabilities.
6. Communication Apps: Specialised communication apps can support individuals with language difficulties or aphasia after a brain injury. These apps may offer picture-based communication systems, text-to-speech functions, or customisable communication boards to facilitate effective communication and self-expression.
7. Wearable Devices: Wearable devices, such as smartwatches or fitness trackers, can serve multiple purposes for individuals with dementia or brain injuries. They can provide reminders, track activity levels, monitor vital signs, and offer safety features like fall detection or emergency alerts.
8.Adaptive Equipment: Adaptive equipment, including mobility aids, assistive tools, and ergonomic devices, can enhance independence and functional abilities. Examples include walking aids, reachers, modified utensils, and grip-enhancing handles, which make daily tasks more manageable for individuals with physical limitations.
9. Environmental Control Systems: Environmental control systems enable individuals to control various aspects of their environment with ease. These systems can include voice-activated controls for lights, temperature, entertainment systems, and security features, empowering individuals to independently manage their surroundings.
10. Cognitive Training Apps: Cognitive training apps and software programs can help individuals with dementia or brain injuries exercise their cognitive abilities. These programs offer interactive exercises that target memory, attention, problem-solving, and other cognitive skills, providing mental stimulation and promoting brain health.
At Lapis Care we work closely with clients who have dementia and we have seen firsthand how these technologies can greatly improve a person’s well-being, safety and independence. From reminder systems and GPS tracking devices to smart home technology and adaptive equipment, these innovative tools empower individuals to engage in daily activities, maintain control over their environment, and overcome cognitive and physical challenges. By incorporating assistive technologies into care plans, individuals can lead more fulfilling lives while reducing dependence on others. It is important to assess individual needs, consult professionals, and select technologies that best match their abilities and preferences, ultimately promoting independence and enhancing their quality of life.

·         Provide keyboard accessibility: Ensure that all functionality on your website is accessible via keyboard, as some users with mobility impairments may not be able to use a mouse.
·         Caption videos: Caption videos to ensure that users with hearing impairments can understand the content.
