"I went back to my favorite shape of thread structure radiating from the middle. The energy, or emotion gets concentrated into the middle forming a stream of red thread. To me, it is a shape of maternal love, or representation of life in nature. If you see a tree from top, this is how the branches look like. If we could see a tree root from the very bottom, it is the same. So as a structure of a female organs such as breasts and placenta." -- Rima Day on Scriptum XXII
Rima Day uses thread, fabric, and paper to create artwork that is inspired by nature and the human body. Day studied fashion design both in her native city of Tokyo, Japan and later in New York City and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut. Her skills as a fashion designer are evident in her beautifully hand-stitched artist’s book. This is our third post in honor of National Embroidery Month!

As Andrew prepares for his University class on Bookbinding, he’s documenting new pieces in his collection of Artists’ Books. This lovely volume from Kimberly Kwan called ‘worn yesterday’ talks about clothes and relationships. This letterpress book will be a great example. #artistsbook #bookarts #letterpress #relationships #collectingbooks #bookbinding (at Big River Bindery) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChFx7SOJWd0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Eva Alcántara, James The River, Risograph, Foil Stamp & Metal Spiral, 6" × 8" , 2021. penumbrafoundation.org/penumbra-store/eva-alcantara
Tumblr media
° Single colour risograph print details photographs crisply, visible grain describing midtones with enough visual information to read layers of blurred water or skin.
° Metal spiral bound gives book a field note or practical scientific journal feel. There is an uncompromising structure to the binding that contrasts the soft imagery. Much like the poems on death, rabbits and guns.

Artist book Research
When I was receiving feedback from my presentation, Mark mentioned that he thought the photographs did not seem precious. Following this feedback, I have decided to look at how I can change the presentation of my photographs to show that they hold value.
When looking at Artist's books last year, I came across "Frantichums Assembling Box". I have decided to look at this artist book again because I am interested in how the random contents feel like they have meaning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When observing the Artist's book, I noticed that before you pick it up, it does not feel special or seem like it would hold anything of value. However, when you lift the lid of the box, I realised that it is made out of thick card.
By using thick card, the artist has made the contents feel like they need to be protected. This makes the contents feel like they hold value and are precious. I like how the artist has made the audience immediately look at the contents of the box differently. The audience will handle the things in the box with care and examine them in-depth to find out why they are important.
Furthermore, the card has a slightly textured feel and is heavier than I was initially expecting. By using a heavy card, the artist is enforcing this idea that the contents are special. This idea comes from the fact that it makes the card feel like it can protect the contents more because the heavier it is, the sturdier it feels. The texture feels different from paper and flimsy cardboard boxes, making it feel high quality.
In conclusion, the contents of the artist book feel special and precious because they are held by a high-quality box. I will look at creating a box to hold my photos and look at how I can use the materials to create this high-quality feel.

New from @primaryinfo !! Cory Arcangel and Stine Janvin: Identity Pitches, a collaborative artist’s book of musical scores based on Norwegian knitting patterns. That's right, Norwegian knitting patterns. Utilizing three of the most popular Lusekofte sweater designs (Setesdal, Fana and the eight-petal rose of Selbu), @stinejanvin creates scores for both solo and ensemble performers by mapping the knitting patterns onto the harmonic and subharmonic series and integrating the tuning principles of traditional Norwegian instruments. These scores are further manipulated by Arcangel using a custom “deep-fried” coding script to create a series of image glitches. A foreword and an interview between the two artists, both based in Stavanger, Norway, provide context for the work, delving into the history of Norwegian folk music tunings and the Lusekofte sweater and their intersection with the cultural identity of the country over the last millennium. Read more via linkinbio. #coryarcangel #stinejanvin #identitypitches #lusekofte #artistsbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlYlWjJztn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#MiniatureMonday
[Alphabet cube / Philip & Anna Morrison]
Any big Rubik's Cube fans in our audience? The one on display today presents an extra challenge, as the tiles are also arranged alphabetically! Each tile set (which serve as 'pages') has a little information about a type designer from throughout the history of type, corresponding to each letter.
This could be a fun educational game, but I am not very good at Rubik's Cube, so this one can stay solved, and keep its more educational 'book' functions!
Anyone making games to help them study?
Tumblr media
^There are lots of creative versions of this game now!

This is an artists’ book in the form of an origami fortune teller. Often used in children’s games, the operator places their thumbs and first fingers inside the pockets of the device and presents it to the player. The player makes selections, and the operator opens and closes the fortune teller based on the player’s choices. In the end, the player will pick a flap to reveal a hidden message and read their fortune.
This artists’ book entitled “How to fall apart and come back together : a fortune teller” by Vanessa Adams is a piece of queer magic that asks us to make space to pause and reimagine ourselves beyond the limits of our body. What can we shed? What old parts of ourselves no longer serve us? What new forms can we envision for ourselves in their stead? Following in the footsteps of our queer and trans fungal and plant kin, we can shapeshift and transform. (Summarized from the artist’s website)
How to fall apart and come back together : a fortune teller Adams, Vanessa (Artist) [artist, printer] Manufactured: [Pittsburgh] : Vanessa Adams, [2021] 1 folded sheet : color illustrations ; 23 x 23 cm (folded) English HOLLIS number: 99156316583003941

Look at artists books for inspiration
To develop my experiments with Layout and type, I have decided to look at Artists books to see how I can convey a message clearly using a more visual method.
Dawn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like how the artist has used different colours and hand writing to tell the reader different things about the leaf. This makes it easier to depict what each section is trying to tell you and why. By printing the leaves in a brown colour it reminds me of earth which links to nature. I like how this ties the colours with the imagery and topic. Furthermore, by using a dark blue for the time stamp, it contrasts with the brown prints, allowing them to be legible even when they are overlapped. By using a scripted handwriting for the thought and phrases, it gives the book a more personal feeling. It clearly shows that the writing is showing something personal. This shows that the book is a documentation of the artists personal experience that day. By using a hand binding method this enforces that this book is personal. Additionally, by making the prints blurred it implies that the story behind them is unknown. This tells me that the writing is more definite then the prints themselves.
Agree to Disagree
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This artists book intrigued me because it requires the viewer to interact with it. I like how the message changes depending on which part of the page you turn. This allows the viewer to interpret it differently every time they interact with it. I also like how it gives the viewer control on how they read the book. This method may be useful for my project because it will allow me to explore how mixing up the conversations changes the meaning behind them. This method could also help me to explore how I can show two different sides of conversations by using different colours; by using a white typefaces of the word on the back of the sections, it leaves a 'ghost' of the word. This allows the viewer to easily interpret the book and look for deeper meanings.
