Ma-le'l Dunes, California
From beach to forest, it's all sand dunes of various types. Wandering the wetlands and the wildflowers all found among these moving, undulating sands. Ma-le'l Dunes are part of a National Natural Landmark.

Sorry English isn't my first language so I'm not sure but isn't "turmoil " another word for angst ? Are we back to Angstville? XD At the same time I would like to say I freaking love MMLY, it's so well-written you give your character time and place to grow so naturally it's really pleasant to read! Thank you for this piece of pleasure!
Awww thank you. I meant the real life places are in turmoil which means like unrest or chaos. So I wrote about them driving through Portland and Redding which, if you don't know...
Portland is in uprising right now because the dumbass president sent feds to deal with BLM protests and it's just been an all out war for weeks. People are being tear gassed and pepper sprayed and it's just a shitshow just because these military assholes think it's okay. And to add insult to injury, the mayor of Portland made a public comment basically confirming he NEVER asked that cheeto in office to send feds because protests were peaceful but he did it anyways and has threatened other cities with the same.
And Redding had a church service yesterday I think with like 200+ people, outside, unmasked. They just called for prayer and gathered in a big group and it's just a mess. My best friend just moved up to Arcata and she said they haven't had nearly as many covid cases but with people like the ones in Redding I think their time is limited.
So in other words, people suck. But yes, thank you for loving my series. I'm in love with it too and wish I had a boyfriend. 💙

Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ): The Fight to Protect Democratic Confederalism [UPDATES]
http://uchicagogate.com/articles/2017/2/28/kurdish-womens-protection-units-ypj-the-fight-to-protect-democratic-confederalism/
In September, Western media outlets ran stories with headlines like “Asia Ramazan Antar—the Kurdish Angelina Jolie—‘Killed While Fighting ISIS.’” The articles featured photos of Antar and described her heroic death protecting the town of al-Yashli from Daesh (the so-called Islamic State or ISIS) car bombs. Antar was a member of the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). This group is part of the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which has governed the area of Rojava in northern Syria since the Rojava Revolution in 2012...

Kid’s Ocean Day: Teaching Kids in Humboldt County about Oceans
Story and photos by Leisyka Parrott, BLM.
Since 2005, the BLM Arcata Field Office in California has participated in sponsoring Ocean Day, an annual event held in June dedicated to the preservation of our oceans. Through a collaboration with Friends of the Dunes, a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the natural diversity of coastal environments, the BLM offers Humboldt County students a comprehensive environmental education program. It consists of classroom lessons and beach clean-ups, culminating with an aerial art project. The program is designed to inspire students to become lifelong stewards of public land and our shared ocean by taking an active role in restoration.
In March, Leisyka Parrott, Interpretive Specialist for the BLM Arcata Field Office, introduced the program at the 2017 International Conference of the National Association of Interpretation (NAI) in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. She was joined by Suzie Fortner of Friends of the Dunes in bringing this educational tool to the world stage.
“This is will be our 13th Annual Kids’ Ocean Day event in Humboldt County, and we are still really excited to be a part of this statewide program” said Leisyka. “In the classroom, students have learned about our diverse coastal ecosystems, and how human actions are impacting these habitats. But Ocean Day is not just about environmental problems. We focus on solutions and taking action. We teach the students that their everyday actions can make a difference, and on Ocean Day the kids are getting their hands dirty and making a difference for our coastal environments by picking up trash and removing invasive species.
“This year our theme animal is fish, which to us is an animal that highlights the interconnection of our watersheds, estuaries, and marine environments. The take home message, both for students and for everyone who sees the image, is that we all need to be a part of the solution and work together to protect our coast and ocean.”
In 2016, 830 people came together to form the crab image as seen above, which unfortunately was the only crab to be found that year. Unusual conditions led to blooms of toxic algae producing a neurotoxin called domoic acid. The unhealthy levels inside the crabs closed the fishing season for five of the most productive months of the year in 2016. For those attending the NAI conference, no message could have been more potent.
The Bureau of Land Management’s Arcata Field Office is responsible for the administration of natural resources, lands, and mineral programs on approximately 200,000 acres of public land in Northwestern California. The area includes the 60,000 acre King Range National Conservation Area, north coast areas of the California Coastal National Monument, and the 7,472 acre Headwaters Forest Reserve.

6 Reasons to Protect Northwest California #BLMWild Treasures
The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Arcata and Redding Field Offices in northern California are tasked with caring for about 400,000 acres of public lands in Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Siskiyou, Shasta, Butte, and Tehama counties on behalf of the American people. The BLM is currently seeking public input on how these lands should be managed over the next decade or more. Why we should care about protecting #BLMWild places in the region:
1. These public lands are stepping stones for wildlife and are among the most untouched in the region. The surrounding areas have suffered a long history of logging, mining, road construction and other development activities. In some places, these lands are all that’s left of a watershed.
2. Tucked between National Forest lands and private property, these “wild islands” are treasures to the northern California way of life as important habitat for wildlife, the source of clean drinking water, areas of recreation and places with cultural significance to Native Americans.
3. Connecting Islands of Habitat — These islands of public lands range from approximately 30,000 acres to as little as 40 acres. But the importance of these lands is outsized. They help connect habitat for bald eagles, river otters, salmon and steelhead and many more species of wildlife.
4. Safeguarding Sources of Clean Water — The rivers and streams that originate or run through these public lands contribute to the region’s supply of water for drinking as well as what’s needed for municipal and agricultural use. Protecting these lands is an investment in the area’s water supply. These rivers and streams also provide habitat for salmon and steelhead and their conservation is critical for the region’s fisheries.
5. Experiencing the Outdoors — As the BLM updates their blueprint for the region, we have a chance to conserve sensitive public lands from development and enhance opportunities for people to experience the outdoors. These lands include places that are suitable for recreation activities like hiking, camping, mountain bike riding, horseback riding, kayaking, rafting and canoeing.
6. Recognizing Culturally and Historically Significant Lands — The public lands that will be considered during this process include places that are historically and culturally important for the region’s Native American tribes, including the Cahto, Karuk, Wintun and Yurok nations and the peoples represented by the Round Valley Indian Tribes. Input from these communities will be critical during this process.
If you care about how your public lands are managed, this is your opportunity to make your voice heard! Make your comments by February 3 on the California Wilderness Coalition’s action page, and learn more on our website.

Headwaters Forest Reserve, California
Last "ThickTrunkThursday", I headed out to the closest patch of old growth redwoods. It does take a 5 mile hike to get there, much of it along the river and a bit lined with striking fetid adderstongue flowers.

King Range National Conservation Area, California.
Day 5 meant facing up to more trail that hadn't been worked since a tough winter. I managed it, a bit of road walk, and unexpected dry camping that I was perfectly prepared for.

Lacks Creek Management Area near Willow Creek, California.
I took on the trails on the east side ridge of Lacks Creek for a big hiking loop. The area probably makes more sense to do as a bunch of short trails instead, but the big hike can work.
