While the Bury the Gays trope mostly exasperates me (unless the story is genuinely poignant, which happens), I'm always a bit amused when I end up squinting at the screen and going "…Wait, is that bury the gays, or isn't it?" Some examples:
Aniara The lesbians die. So does everyone else. We shall all die. Existance is just a temporary reprieve from total oblivion, and we're all drifting through an empty, meaningless void. Also, the Mimarobe was (presumably) not even a woman in the book.
Triage The gays die and die and die, but because of the nature of the time loop, they always come back to life and don't stay dead long enough to be buried. Eventually they escape the time loop and stay alive.
Jane the Virgin The lesbian died, and her girlfriend got a new love interest, who turned out to be the old love interest in disguise, having faked her own death. Then the lesbian died for realsies this time, except now we have some more lesbians, so, uh… where was I again?

in today's queer media selection i wanna talk about the swedish movie aniara (2018). this is one of the best sci-fi movies ive ever seen period. the main character's relationship with a woman isn't the focus of the plot but it's still present and important to the narrative.
Tumblr media
the writing of this movie is honestly incredible. it shows a future that feels very human and inevitable yet somehow still feels shocking when the plot takes its turn. it's bleakly beautiful and reminds me a bit of melancholia (2011) but like way more gay

Anyway, my initial pull tonight was Interstellar (2014) until it loaded and had the audacity to be near 3 hours long, so fuck James Cameron, it will have to wait for another time, or not at all. Fucking 3 hour movies. It's why I also don't want to watch Beau is Afraid (2023).
This one sounds conceptually similar to that really terrible one, Voyagers (2021), but hopefully it's better and also not as stupid.
Aniara (2018)

Earth's fucked, everyone in the space elevator.
It's like a space cruise ship that goes from Earth to Mars. Oops, maybe on the second part.

Sci-fi movies I saw yesterday.
ALIEN. OUTER SPACE.
Concepts that I love united in a single post thanks to these three films that I had the pleasure of seeing yesterday.
Well, the pleasure. Some more than others, I'll warn you. Because, for example, there is NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU. Put by the clouds even by the prompter, it is the biggest piece of crap I have seen in quite some time. A film that offers the same thing as always, with an irritating protagonist to the extreme and a story, in general, to which I do not plan to dedicate much more time because… There is nothing more to extract from it, except boredom.
Tumblr media
A 1/5, and I'm taking a chance!
Although, luckily, in the world we also have things like NOPE, which unlike the first, was harshly criticized and I still don't understand why (just like the character of Kaluuya, who was my favorite (even though they are all very well introduced)! Do you dislike serious and intelligent people who know what they are talking about? Interesting xD). When we talk about NOPE, we are talking about a fantastic adventure film, with a pure horror sequence in between, with a simple rhythm and script, but more than effective, since its messages and ideas are clear from the very beginning and It is capable of keeping you hooked. But we also talked about his original "antagonist" and the brilliant UFO theory he offers in this regard. Brilliant idea and staging that I can't go below 4/5. Well, EVERYTHING (even the humor) FITS PERFECTLY.

Just like in ANIARA. Without a doubt, THE BEST ON THIS LIST. A forgotten beauty that must be remembered more, since we are facing the most realistic and fascinating space adventure that I HAVE EVER SEEN. Based, also, on an epic poem from the last century that I reading to do immediately, because with just its first pages, it has conquered me as much as its film adaptation!
A ship on its way to Mars that leaves its orbit and is left to its fate in the immensity of space, and the psychological and existential impact that this has on its crew. A long journey that stays with you FOREVER. Just like its ending.
Tumblr media
A thoughtful legend that you have to SEE NOW.

hiii read your tags on that kaz/inej scene and honestly feel the exact same way, and i’ve never seen anyone else talk about it. it’s this iconic scene for everyone and i’ve always felt so iffy about it because it demands that he changes this big part of himself or he’s never going to get to love her the way she wants him to. not to mention how his aversion to touch comes from trauma, something that isn’t just gonna magically disappear with the power of love. anyway i realized i had way more feelings about this than i first thought 💛
oh hi hello thank you so much for coming into my inbox with this <3 i'm so glad to know i'm not alone in feeling this bc i know we're certainly in the minority! i understand what the scene and the whole concept is trying to do with kaz but it's like... bruh. that's who he is and you can't change something that fundamental with the power of love. it makes me a little mad at inej sometimes too because i'm like! that's the man you love! he has armour and you must love him in it if you're to love him at all! like it's a very complicated issue that i don't think is dissected enough in the show or the books. so thank you again <3 <3

has anyone seen the swedish film ANIARA? cause oh boy, it was bleak af.
major spoilers below (and my ramble)
it was definitely not what I was expecting. I thought they'd wander for 2 years or so before getting back to earth or mars, being completely different because they had to contemplate. but... nope. at least Earth was very nice and green in the end. but did it have to be 5 million years later? couldn't it be like 5000? I am not sure why I think that's better though, I guess because less change in that time? okay other than this bleak ending, there are some plotholes, like how is it possible that the spaceship had no escape plans for such cases? how is it possible that all power is still on, but all communication is lost?
