— experience

I first started rping on Neopets forums as an OC lol. I was big into d&d and elder scrolls and so I basically jumped into whatever fantasy themed rp stuff to play my character in it. That kind of moved on into MSN and AIM rp for several years until that petered out. I eventually returned to petsite stuff, when I started a Pokémon rp thread on Subeta. That was when I first discovered Tumblr and started playing a few characters here. The fandom at the time was pretty toxic though, so instead left for twitter and played the same characters there for a few years. I made another return to Tumblr to try out some indie RP outside of communities, and it worked out ok for a while, until I quit Tumblr after the ban. I then didn't RP at all for like 5 years. Then I came back again. I'm basically starting from scratch with no connections or community, and I'm kinda struggling a little, but I'm trying.

Uh, idk really? I don't really operate by genres so much as fandoms/characters, I guess? So I dunno I guess like fantasy/supernatural stuff is my thing, I guess.

— plots vs memes

Primarily plots. That's just the way I've always worked. I like to know who I'm playing with, I like to know what to expect from a character. When I used to RP, memes weren't really a thing, so seeing the shift towards them has been a bit of a change. I honestly don't mind memes, but I find it hard to take part in them if characters are unfamiliar, or we don't have a relationship. I just prefer having something established to work with. I've attempted to approach people to start a thread, or to get to know their characters, and just received a "send a meme" in reply, and I just don't know where to go from there.

— long or short replies

Really doesn't matter too much overall, as long as there's effort and you're trying. Sometimes there just aren't the words to respond to something with a long reply, and sometimes you just get struck by an inspiration and keep going. As long as you're having fun and you're engaging, that's all that matters.

— best time to write

Really, whenever. I don't have any kind of set schedule. But being in the UK timezone means I don't really match up with most. But again, it's not like there's a time limit or set schedule.

Okay, hi this is the writer of 689718481492574208 and 689720977149607936689718481492574208 again, I don't want to respond to anyone directly in the comments on my blog because I don't want any kind of harassment or anything and I don't intend to be like harsh on anyone, but this is the last thing I'm saying on the matter. This is in regard to the comments on 689720977149607936689718481492574208.

Yes an rper is someone who rps but its never been about how much or how often someone rps. Back when I was a kid rping was often as stupid and simple as AIM / MSN convos where you would occasionally write something like this to your friend: Character A: *pokes character B*

This was silly, no pressure fun which is what rp should be at the end of the day, no matter how much more in depth people (such as myself) have personally chosen to go with it. Writing lots and constantly are not specified as requirements because rp is a hobby not a job. There is no such thing as a professional rper. Everyone is an armature and the beauty of rp is it should not be held to any special standard. Its something people do in their free time when they have desire to do so and there are all different styles and genres of rp that suit different people.

Yes there are some people who really take rp seriously and thats your prerogative, you're within your right to cultivate a more 'serious' space for rp but you gotta understand that the public / indie rpc cannot be held to your personal standard. I would recommend joining group rps if you want a "stricter" environment and want to hold people to certain muses and levels of activity. Groups tend to have activity checks and auditions and stuff to prevent people from picking up muses they don't have time to write / are not suited for but I suspect a majority of the indie rpc are not in groups bc ultimately they don't like being held to the standards they really don't mind holding others to.

Some people don't have as much free time or inspo as others. It doesn't make them not an rper because you visit one of their blogs and don't feel like they're posting enough writing for you to consider them an rper. Some of my blogs have no current writing / threads on them, a few of them just have a couple ooc posts/hcs and gif sets, these blogs would be considered by the "standards" of some of you as not "rp blogs" and I wouldn't be able to call myself an rper.

But little would you know I have multiple blogs, I have had muses on tumblr for over ten years, I am admittedly less active now I'm older and a lot of my muses have gone through "rebooted" blogs due to age and some have much more writing and threads than others. But just because my blog for X doesn't have a lot on it doesn't mean my blog for Y wont and that because my X blog doesn't have a lot there doesn't mean I cant call myself an rper or that I don't plan to rp on that blog eventually. It may be in two weeks, it may be in two months, it may be in two years. I don't know. But you have absolutely no way to know how much a mun of any blog is writing because you're only privy to a really tiny potion of their online time / space on tumblr. They could have multiple other blogs and could write more on other sites, etc. I have a lot of mutuals who would be considered "muse droppers" by these standards because their blogs have more gifs and whatever than rp threads but a lot of them rp very actively on discord. I also know a lot of people who started rp blogs here on tumblr but found it more relaxed to run rp accounts on twitter instead, as another example. They rp actively there, but dont rp on their tumblrs.

My original response listed a few reasons why some rpers become discouraged from or abandon their blogs soon after making them. Becoming discouraged, overwhelmed or intimidated by rp communities here on tumblr and therefore not getting to write any or as much as they may of planned doesn't make people not rpers. Trying to turn rp into this super serious thing, or at least feeding the mentality that does push for rp to be this serious job-like thing where rpers have to meet certain criteria of how many ic things they're posting on their tumblr blogs to satisfy certain followers sucks all the fun out of rp and drives people away.

If a blog you follow isn't meeting your criteria you should have known in the first place and given the big lot of nothing they were apparently doing (As indicated by people saying they don't do anything but post gifs and were only there for a week / didn't post anything ic in that week) you really had no reason to feel like you lost anything or had any incentive to feel like they owed you something in the first place, therefore no reason to feel bitter with these muns or as if they're 'wasting your time'.

If they're not in your dms every day asking you for rp and never replying to any threads you give them you've got no reason to have beef with them. If they're not shitting on you for unfollowing/not writing with them then you've got no reason to have beef with them. Outside of those two things there is no reason for anyone to think blog hoppers and muse droppers are bad or to really be in their business in anyway.

I personally don't even notice blogs who do this that I don't get the opportunity to get friendly with OOC because after I follow them and they don't post again I forget all about them. No loss for anyone. You guys are saying that rpers should label themselves so you can "avoid" blogs that don't meet your personal criteria but ultimately you guys don't get to decide how much rp makes an rper. Some people don't label their blogs because sometimes people go inactive / drop muses / fandoms because of unforeseen events / circumstances in their lives / spaces. That said a lot of people I know and come across do label their blogs as things like "low" or "sporadic" activity etc so look out for labels like that if you're really concerned about how much a blog does or doesn't post.

As I mentioned in my last submission "people in the rpc get way too possessive of / personally invested in blogs / things that truly have nothing to do with them in any way and cannot possibly be effecting them to the extent some of them like to make out."

The balls in your court. If its so bothersome for any of you to follow people who don't post as much as you apparently suspected they would then you need to do a better job of surveying blogs before you follow them. Check post dates, again check for labels like low or sporadic activity, look at the rules as I know a lot of people will mention they hyper fixate on things and these periods can be brief, and have other blogs, prefer to write on discord, etc. It should be pretty clear how high or low a persons level of activity is once you check their blog even if they don't have any particular labels.

anna || age unknown / turned at 12 || the feral vampire || anna is the undead daughter of stefan who was thought to be dead for hundreds of years after she was believed to have met her untimely demise at the age of fourteen. in reality she was found by a vampire after her parents seemed to abandon her and they took pity on her, turning her into a vampire despite her young age. it soon became evident just how feral she was and how she couldn't be tamed.

eventually she killed her sire and took on the facade of a helpless child until she was adopted by a nice family with whom she lived until their death which left anna completely alone again. this made her unwilling to form any bonds with humans that she would only outlive, but her need for family keeps her looking for someone that can give her the family she always wanted. || fc: alisha weir

aiden campbell || 300+ years old || closeted homosexual || the mind reading vampire || aiden is a mysterious vampire whose human life has never been disclosed aside from him being a father to young rosalind with his wife, elizabeth for several years. their quiet life being broken when rosalind was stolen away in the night and aiden's wife suffered with tuberculosis which ended her life and almost took his as well. while she succumbed to the illness, aiden was saved by a man named stefan who lured the younger man in with the promise of love and a happier life than the one he lost.

believing his lies led aiden to being turned and becoming the fledgling to stefan whose love was only a way to get aiden on his good side. centuries of staying by his sire's side finally came to an end when aiden was able to escape the pain he endured at the hands of the older vampire. finding a better life for himself that kept him in the darkness of nighttime while drawing as little attention to himself as possible. not wanting to relive the trauma of his past that is forever etched on his skin with scars. || fc: assad zaman

stefan || age unknown / physically 35 || panesxual || the ancient vampire || while his origin is unknown and lost to the world, stefan once lived in france during the 1800s where he met a young woman with whom he had a daughter, making the child half vampire and it seemed like the charming man had everything going for him as he was considered wealthy and his natural talent for any job he had made it easy for stefan to be successful while hiding the fact that he was a vampire. though when his daughter and wife died, causing stefan to lose any bit of humanity left within him and he became less of a vampire and more of a monster that no longer cared who he killed as he had nothing left to live for.

that was until he met aiden whom he soon fell for and together they started a relationship that seemed to be going well for years, ultimately leading to stefan turning aiden with the promise that they'd have a new life together as lovers. unfortunately this was all manipulation and soon his treatment of his fledgling turned abusive until aiden finally managed to break free. with the old stefan now completely gone, he was free to continue to cause bloodshed wherever he went, reining hell on a world that he long since stopped caring about. || fc: sam reid

leonardo 'lee' turner || 35 || closeted homosexual || the state official || lee is a charming man working in washington as a state official during the 1950's, making a name for himself while being the man that all the women want to be with. what they don't know is the secret that lee keeps from the world after an incident during his younger years forced the once confident lee to bury himself into the closet.

fearing that he'd once again be rejected or worse for his interest in men. preferring to just hook up with men that he'd meet whom he knew wouldn't talk about sleeping with him, lee did his best to keep from getting attached to someone until he met the senator's assistant and writer, james richardson. what started as an affair in the midst of a changing world turned into something that would end up changing him over the course of several decades where he learns to move on from his trauma and become a better man. || fc: matt bomer

ian thompson || 35 || closeted homosexual || the wayward ceo || thought to be the eldest son of richard thompson, a powerful ceo, ian had a responsibility from a young age to take care of his younger siblings, sky and wilbur. it was while growing up that he endured abuse from his father with no help from his absent mother who let it all take place. resulting in ian developing ptsd, trust issues and some scarring on his face from past incidents. along with a drug issue that he still has today despite being the successful ceo of a business company. it was after richard died that he discovered the existence of siblings he didn't realize he had when part of the inheritance he, sky and issac were supposed to get. thus causing ian's life to change as he started to look for the rest of his family and try to move on from what happened to him as a kid. || fc: jeremy strong

emanuel 'manny' kingsley || 33 - 60 || homosexual || the political assistant || coming from a humble childhood with his adopted parents who gave manny a family when his parents died before he had a chance to fully remember them, the young boy learned life lessons that made him the perfect candidate for the assistant of senator antown thompson. someone whom the closeted manny fell for without being able to admit such a thing until the two began a secretive affair that began a life of complicated love, breakups, reunions and heartaches.

it was as he started working for antown that he grew curious about the world of politics which only made him want to pursue something greater. this only led to him being involved in a scandal that ended up tarnishing his reputation and he had no choice but to leave something he knew so well, thus living a quieter life that took him from washington to london. somewhere he felt more at peace while finding a new path for himself.

something that only worked for so long before he was diagnosed with stage three leukemia. taking away any dreams he had for the future, manny put his life on hold while focusing on his treatments that eventually led to him being cancer free. though even with his time spent going back to life again, he was once again sick years later and it was this new illness that told him he couldn't just put life on hold since there was no guarantee that he'd get better or have another chance to beat something that was only slowly killing him a little each day. || fc: jonathan bailey ( verses: x )

nicolas shaffrer || 25 || bisexual || the politic's son || being the adopted son of olivia shaffer whose leak of the thompsons' personal information, nicolas found himself in the mess of a scandal that he had no part in. always preferring to avoid the world of politics that he was brought into when adopted as a child, he preferred just to live his own life while going to school & finding ways to pretend he's not someone that seems to always be watched because of his mother being so well known. his outgoing nature becoming more introverted over time as he wanted to keep his own scandal from occurring, a feeling that only intensified during the events of the scandal that made him distance himself from his mother even more as he resented her decision to do what she did to people whom nicolas had long since started to respect. || fc: taylor zakhar perez

draco || age unknown / turned at 25 || pansexual || the vampire with a heart || having always been one to charm those he felt an attraction to before being turned when on the brink of death, draco would become notorious with other vampires he'd meet for believing that a vampire could ever love when they are are meant to be bloodthirsty killers. it was something he soon learned to use as a way to lure unsuspecting men & women to use them as a way to feed or turn into vampires when the urges grew too strong to ignore. with half of his memory gone from the early years of his life as a vampire, he's been unable to recall times spent with others he met after being turned. one of whom being another vampire named tobias whom he'd reunite with to learn about his broken past & relearn the bond they once had. || fc: timothee chalamet

micah langston || 40 || bisexual || the colony bartender || micah is among the others who live a dystopian colony that is filled with corruption & danger at every turn. while most would just go about their duties & keep their heads down in fear of alerting the guards, micah takes on a different approach & tries to keep as optimistic as possible. some people find his outgoing personality weird in such a negative place, but for someone who's been through his own hardships, micah chooses just to focus on the few good things he has left than the bad that could send him spiraling into a bad place.

among the good things is a tavern he owns within the colony that is perhaps the only real uplifting thing about such a gloomy place. located where the guards don't usually frequent, he's able to put aside his worries while he works & make friends with those who find his charm to be endearing. what no one knows about the man is his dark past that included the supposed demise of his girlfriend & their son which left him on his own.

while he'd only disclose such information to those he trusts, he bears both mental & physical scars of the darker parts of his life. regardless of what might have happened to him, micah helps out where he's needed & does his best to keep those around him from getting into trouble that he knows all too well is not something he'd wish on anyone given the scar on his neck that came from an attack from the guards whom he found out the hard way are not there to protect the colonists as many would claim. || fc: sacha baron cohen

draco || age unknown / turned at 35 || pansexual || the vampire with a heart || having always been one to charm those he felt an attraction to before being turned when on the brink of death, draco would become notorious with other vampires he'd meet for believing that a vampire could ever love when they are are meant to be bloodthirsty killers. it was something he soon learned to use as a way to lure unsuspecting men & women to use them as a way to feed or turn into vampires when the urges grew too strong to ignore. with half of his memory gone from the early years of his life as a vampire, he's been unable to recall times spent with others he met after being turned. one of whom being another vampire named tobias whom he'd reunite with to learn about his broken past & relearn the bond they once had. || fc: jonathan bailey

That being said, I've never had an indie rp before but I've figured the basics with the rules, verses, etc. Could you please give me some suggestions on how to approach people or get this thing started? HELL YEAH OKIE DOKIE first thing first: the best way to learn how to indie rp is just to follow a bunch of people and sort of pick and choose the different techniques you like to resemble. that what i did. i came from a long experience of closed group rping with no formatting, and just sort of floated with the indie trends that came and out, and kept the ones i like. i’m gonna tell you how I consider indie rping, which isn’t law or bible or anything, but this is what i look for when i’m looking to follow people!

first, the technical shit

RULES. i’m gonna go over things you say you already know, because there are some. hidden things that people sort of silently expect. in your rules, you must have your name/alias, your pronouns, your age (the terms ‘minor’ or ‘18+’ are sufficient, you don’t need to give your exact age but you NEED to tell people if you’re a minor or not), and your triggers (again, no detail necessary, just tell us what we should tag for you). these are the necessities and the rest is up to you. make your rules clear and concise, and on the short side. it helps to bold important things so people can skim and find them easily. personally, i like seeing people’s shipping policies. bc i’m a shipping slut. are you single ship? multiship? do you prefer not to ship? are you exclusive?

SELECTIVITY. on that note. let people know about your selectivity. do you want to play with anyone who follows you? do you only want to play with mutual followers (people you follow who follow you back)? i, as well as (almost) everyone i follow, are mutuals only. don’t feel guilty if you want to follow this route, and don’t let people talk you into playing with people you don’t want to play with. this blog is yours and your time is yours. spend it how you choose.

EXCLUSIVITY. along the same vein, let people know about your policy on exclusivity – which basically means that there are certain blogs of characters and theirs is the only blog of that character with whom you will play. this is entirely up to you. personally, i don’t do it and i never will. but be sure to let people know if you do! make sure to be honest. make sure you’re comfortable with your rules.

then, the aesthetic shit

REPRESENTATION. the first glance. the first eye contact. generally, this is the mobile preview. have a cool looking mobile banner! it attracts the eye! you don’t need to be a photoshop god for this, either. minimalism is in. a dark screenshot of your character that blends in with the color of your mobile background is hella neat. make sure the color is eye-friendly. black, white, cream, soft tones. if a mobile preview is lime green or shocking blue, i won’t give it a second look. My Eyes, They Bleed. then make sure you have SOMEWHERE on your mobile preview the bare minimum of your blog’s explanation. it doesn’t need to be long. in fact, i tend to like short ones. minimalism, man. for example, mine: ‘multimuse rp blog: dragon age and mass effect canon and ocs’. i’m saying what this blog is: an rp blog. i’m saying what KIND of rp blog: a multimuse. what fandoms i cater to: dragon age and mass effect. what characters you expect to find here: canon and ocs. sometimes people will put their name, too. (also, warn people if you have an autoplay. just write ‘ap’ or ‘autoplay’. people know.)

REPRESENTATION PART 2. piggybacking on all that: promos. gotta have a promo. this is how people find you, and how you can spread the word about your cool new blog. (tag it with the audiences you want to attract. such as: mass effect rp, mass effect roleplay, bioware rp, bioware roleplay, star wars rp, etc etc. the mass effect fandom isn’t all that huge. consider expanding with crossovers to other space fandoms, such as star wars and star trek. we’re buddies.) it can be as simple as the icon promo trend, where you have a horizontal line of icons of your character followed by ‘like/reblog if you’re interested in playing with (character name)! written by (your name).’ it can be that chill. sometimes it can be dramatic. just make sure it’s tasteful. try to avoid gaudy. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS (this is my pet peeve) INCLUDE YOUR CHARACTER’S NAME AND THE FANDOM NAME. i die inside every time i have no idea who this promo is for.

THEME. the second glance. your blog’s handshake. first – and sometimes last – impression. same rules as the preview and the promo, make it tasteful or make it minimalist. make it easy to follow. if you’re not confident in your aesthetic or ps skills, the white blogs with a simple pic of your character in the sidebar is in right now. leave it open to interpretation. theme-hunter is where i get all my themes, for the most part. if you want some cool theme suggestions, let me know! you may end up interested in html through theme aesthetic and wANTING IT TO BE PERFECT. like me. hehe. anywho – you’ll see a lot of Hyper Aesthetic Themes. try not to get worried about them. the most important thing is that your links to your rules, verses, dossier (if you have one), and ask are clear. the writing is easy to read.

also, the replying shit

FORMATTING. okay so formatting is a Minefield right now. personally, i really enjoy formatting! my formatting trick is: twenty spaces before each paragraph to simulate tabs, bolding quotation marks and putting a space between the marks and the dialogue, ( doing this to parentheses and quite frankly using Way too many parentheses ), BOLDING AND CAPSING emotive words or phrases, italicizing things for emphasis, using small font (and sometimes tiny font). but DON’T overdo it. still, the point is legibility. it’s your choice to use formatting at all. i like it a lot, it helps me Feel the writing and reply. it’s also your choice to use small or tiny font, but… i’ma be honest. i really really do prefer when people use small or tiny font. people are pushing back against tiny font bc it can be really hard to read, so i tend to just use small font (unless my partner uses tiny font). to small font (on pc): select all the text, ctrl shift minus sign. to use tiny font: use small font, then ctrl comma.

ICONNING. again, another minefield. as we speak, rp icons are getting smaller and smaller. my icons at 80x80 with a 2px border, and i often times use a psd. if you get your icons from somewhere, credit that place. i frequently make my own, but not always. as a personal favor, don’t go smaller than 75px… the icons… they’re shrinking…

SPEED. go at your own speed! i cannot stress the importance of this. i’m currently suffering from depression and some Shit, so i may be on the dash a lot, but my reply speed is frequently outstripped by passing snails. don’t write if you’re not feeling it. don’t feel pressured to do it. personally, the majority of the fun of rping is plotting with your partner and obsessing over your character. people love to see people enthusiastic about their kid. that’s why they followed you. bc they love your kid, too. if you have a thread you’re not feeling, be honest! TALK TO YOUR PARTNER.

COMMUNICATION. on that note! get to know your rp partners. love them. cherish them. tell them they’re wonderful. tell them when you’re not feeling a thread. don’t suffer in silence. drop threads. treat yoself. also, follow ALL THE PEOPLE. they may not follow you back. don’t tug at them if they don’t. follow people and make sure you have examples of your writing on your page, even if it’s just a long headcanon or drabble. like a cover letter.

WRITING. third person. i think i can be pretty confident about this: only third person. i use present tense for the most part, but present or past tense. sometimes there are oneliners (replies that are usually just dialogue, maybe with a lil but of narrative for actions, usually spur of the moment and dropped after the moment is gone). there are short paras (generally 1-3 paragraphs of varying sizes). there are long paras (4-6 paras, usually for plotting). there are Novella (6+ for the Intense Future Tolkiens i can’t do this i’m a dr seuss).

TAGGING. can be pretty simple. as a multi, i have too many characters to have thorough tagging systems. a lot of people have different tags for like. aesthetic, musing, visage, headcanons, etc. mine is simple. each character has an in character thread tag: * ｡✧ ━ ⦅ character: scott. ⦆. also, a musing tag: * ｡✧ ━ ⦅ musing: scott. ⦆. a headcanon tag: * ｡✧ ━ ⦅ headcanon: scott. ⦆. sometimes a ship tag: * ｡✧ ━ ⦅ scott & liam: just frame the halves and call them brothers. ⦆. and you MUST have an out of character tag, where it’s just you talking, and you must tag every post of just you talking with it: * ｡✧ ━ ⦅ out of character. ⦆. it must be clear. you can make them fancy and pretty like this. i like them. it’s not necessary. also: tag any triggers. important. search your partners’ rules for their triggers. if someone asks you to tag a trigger, do it without a second thought.

lastly, the important shit

HAVE FUN! we’re all here for the same reason. we love mass effect. WE LOVE SPACE. there will always be aggression and elitism and hurt feelings in the indie rp community. always. try not to let it bring you down. play nice. kindergarten rules. enjoy!

I've just COMPLETED the elite four in pokemon red, so I feel like I should talk about that. I kinda opted out in grinding && lving my pokemon past lv 50, cus otherwise, it's just too easy. I won tho && I'm proud of myself. [ BBY me never managed to pass the 2nd elite four person, but adult me did with EASE. ]

I actually used to really struggle with writing because of my dyslexia, but I have always loved stories && books despite the struggle. I started rping when I was about 16/17 in group rps on tumblr. && I'm positive rping helped me a lot with my grammar && spelling which I struggled most with. My first ever muse was KILLIAN JONES in a pretty toxic rp group && yeah, I did not have a good time. Indie wise, I have only been rping for a few years now maybe since 2016 /2017 or so... BUT I love it, I prefer the freedom && the lack of pressure in indie fandoms.

I was so nervous about making Zack, for one I had never been in the FF rp fandom so I didn't know what it was like, && I was just afraid that I wouldn't do a good job, or that the muse would vanish, but Zack ended up being a joy to write, && I've had so much fun with the friends I've made && hope to continue having more fun with everyone.

i don’t even know how i found rp tbh. i just remember it was a glee rp back in like...2013 (ohgod). i’ve been rping on and off ever since. my longest break was 2016-early 2020... i came back to group rps first then indie. it hasn’t been too long since i’ve been back to rping on indie but i’m just really enjoying it. i think i lost my footing a little bit but i’m slowly starting to pick up the groove again.

i really don’t have a muse preference per say, i love all my children. i’m used to playing males for the sole reason that there always seems to be 4/1 ratio no matter what. so, that’s what i’m most used to. however, since coming back to indie i’ve slowly started using my females more and it really does warm my heart every time i do!

This past weekend I picked up another Steam dating sim, Full Service. I don’t think I could do a complete write-up like I’ve done for some others, but it’s worth mentioning some highlights and lowlights.

The Good

A lot of content for an indie erotica game, with seven primary love interests, over 200 CGs, and over twenty endings running the gamut from tenderly romantic to wildly kinky to dubcon/noncon scenarios. There’s more actual gameplay here than any of the dating sims I’ve previously talked about, with some light scheduling and resource management and a gifting/heart level system comparable to Fire Emblem support ranks or even more so heart levels in those old Harvest Moon games (are those still a thing?). The second playthrough adds more story content to better explore certain character motivations, and there are even after stories - epilogues, essentially - unlocked after perfect endings that catch up with the characters some time later and feature brief animated sex scenes. In the tradition of most gay dating sim protagonists that I’ve come across, Tomoki is fully vers, and his love interests are evenly divided by favored position: three tops, three bottoms, and one fellow vers with a little additional flexibility for certain scenes/combinations. Speaking from extensive personal experience I consider this much more reflective of how the gay/bi male population as a whole approaches anal than something like To Trust an Incubus contorting itself to ensure that every single guy is vers.

The premise is that all the love interests work at a spa/massage parlor that specializes in happy endings. All of them could be considered sex workers, and some of them have alternative sources of income in a similar vein, ex. modeling. This is not the easiest subject matter to write well without being either overly glorifying or overly preachy, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that for the most part Full Service walks the fine line between the two. It doesn’t shy away from the potential dangers and hardships of sex work (especially in some of the bad endings) or from the issues it can create with forming romantic connections, but it also remains generally sex positive and never condemns its characters for what they choose to do with their lives or suggest that they’d all be happier doing something else. The most judgmental the game ever gets seems to be a projection of Tomoki’s own prudishness...which comes off as deliberately hypocritical considering all the raunchy things he can get up to over the course of the game.

Speaking of sex positivity, it’s actually impossible to go through a full playthrough and only have sex with one person, and the fact that around half of the love interests’ development occurs outside plot events means that it’s quite likely that Tomoki will sleep his way through half or more of the spa’s masseurs before all is said and done. Furthermore, despite what I said in my Chess of Blades review about a poly relationship being beyond the scope of a typical dating sim this one pulls it off with one pair of love interests that Tomoki can potentially end up with at the same time.

While she’s not a love interest, there’s a trans woman in the supporting cast. Her full story isn’t revealed until your second playthrough owing to her major role in the plot, but I appreciated the depiction of someone who discovered her gender identity/presentation through her sexual relationships with men. Thara may not be the sort of trans character who would appeal to typical fans of either yaoi or bara, but having explored feminization kink in the context of sex work myself I thought she was a nice addition.

The Bad

So...voice acting. Most of the game goes for vocal work in the style of Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates, short clips that only somewhat match up with the text on screen and are meant to be more suggestive of what the character is saying. Those are fine enough if not always exactly on point, but then there are the perfect endings which are fully voiced. There’s a fair bit of variance in this game’s vocal talent and even audio recording equipment in one or two cases - sadly one of my favorite love interests has a noticeably lower recording quality to his audio, and it’s no more evident than in his perfect ending where suddenly he’s voicing full lines of dialogue - and then there’s the recurring problem these games have with fully voiced sex scenes and how generally silly those come off. I really have to ask: does anyone genuinely feel that full or even partial voice acting adds anything to the eroticism of such scenes? Props to the voice actors for doing their best with the material, but the sounds of sex are just not easy to vocalize unless you’re actually doing it - at least not without sounding ridiculous.

Harping on lack of realism in gay sex scenes has become rather passé, and I can overlook things like everyone being muscled and well-endowed, no one wearing a condom, or there rarely being any mention of artificial lube. However, there is one glaring issue that over and over shattered my suspension of disbelief, because it comes up in like 80% of the game’s sex scenes: these men have no refractory periods, at all. Almost every scene has all characters involved cumming twice, with only one or two lines of text between CGs as a break. Even worse than the inherent absurdity of a man cumming and then being hard again five seconds later is that it leads to the scenes coming off as quite predictable. With only a handful of exceptions sex scenes in Full Service consist of two NSFW CGs: a foreplay CG - oral, rimming, or some light kink like bondage or nipple or armpit play - and then an anal CG. There’s a lot of variety in positions and (tame) kink elements on display, but it’s undercut when almost every encounter follows this exact script.

On some subjects Full Service flirts with a particular kind of kink but can’t find it in itself to commit. Tomoki’s romance with his boss Rald is almost an instance of this, although they do end up having one of those (allegedly) scandalous workplace romances with its kink potential left intact. Less fortunate however are the twins Oki and Okan, who Tomoki can romance either individually or together in the aforementioned poly ending. The twincest is indeed hot, but it’s explained in supplementary material (if not necessarily the game itself) that two really aren’t twins or even related which annoys me as the same sort of cop-out as Coming Out on Top’s teacher/student romance. Here it’s a bit more forgivable as the reason Oki and Okan are more or less RPing as twins is tied into the plot.

The...Eh

Full Service’s setting is difficult to pin down. It’s clearly somewhat inspired by Japan and takes place somewhere in the real world as various other ethnicities get referenced throughout, but it’s all rather vague. I honestly can’t even tell if the developer is Japanese or Western, as there’s signs pointing to either.

There’s an annoying mascot character who runs a gacha for gift items - in-game currency only, thankfully - but the script knows how silly he and uses him sparingly in the plot and heart events.

One of the love interests is (so I’ve read) the protagonist of a completely different indie game, recognizable because he looks like a JRPG protagonist and has plot-convenient amnesia. He’s not a bad character by any means, just a big bundle of genre clichés.

With both Chess of Blades and Coming Out on Top I pointed out that best friend romances were a tricky business and tend to end up lighter on conflict. Full Service really yanks the rug out on that one, but it’s impossible to say any more without heavy spoilers. Suffice it to say Tomoki does have a best friend romance, but it’s hidden and hard to obtain and figures into the main plot in a thoroughly unexpected way.

What I said pertaining to second playthrough reveals also brings up another serious issue the game attempts to tackle, this one with more mixed results. It’s sex trafficking, which indeed ties into the larger sex work premise but in my opinion doesn’t land nearly as well as the rest in large part due to it being treated as a mystery and the centerpiece of many a lategame reveal. There are worse ideas for a source of conflict independent of who Tomoki ends up dating, but I’m still not sure about the overall execution.

So in summary? It’s not entirely my genre and there’s a lack of polish in parts, but a lot of gameplay for a dating sim and so, so much porn. Kind of middle of the pack for me.
