I honestly think some of you (US residents) just don't understand how the United States government is designed to function.
Not whether or not it's good or bad at the functions of the government — how well it works, how good at their job responsibilities people are, or whatever. Not even if it's corrupt or broken or that kind of thing. Not it's morality or trustworthiness.
Just exactly the way it is structured: "what are the intended duties, how is it designed to work, what does "the government" understand as the purpose and role of the government on a day to day basis? How does a function happen?"
When I say the presidents job isn't supposed to be "being an expert on every subject under the law", but they ARE meant to consult advisors and experts when it comes to matters of how x or y thing impacts governance, I am being really fucking literal.
Like congrats if you know what the three branches of the US government are!
but if you're suggesting the president doesn't consult (or receive consultations/reports/explainers) from people on various subjects as a matter of their fucking job, then you just don't know how the United States government is designed to work.
The Cabinet of the United States is literally:
the advisory of the President of the United States
Part of the executive branch of government
Composed of the heads of the US Executive Departments (and other senior executive officials) who, in turn, may be experts in some subjects but also who have advisors and experts.
The whole job of the head secretary of an executive department is advising the president of shit. And the secretary heads the department which is usually made up of several government agencies and thousands of employees, some of whom are at least marginally qualified from the most cynical perspective, and many of whom are leading experts.
The executive branch doesn't ask the president to know everything. It is designed so that expertise travels upwards to the secretaries and the secretaries can present/rely on those massive repositories of "people who know things about this stuff" and reports from those people when advising the president.
(Independent agencies also present reports and information to the president.)
Whether or not the a) the appointed secretaries or advisors from independent agencies are any fucking good at their job, or b) the president ever listens to anyone or cares what experts/department reports say vs what they politically want to do is a completely different question.
But if a president cares to learn about something, or has a longstanding political interest in a particular topic, then like, you can absolutely guarantee some kind of advisory report built partly from multiple expert consultations and collected data was prepared and then given to the president.

He added: “Today I can announce that we will go even further than those provisions already in place, with a five-point plan to further curb immigration abuses that will deliver the biggest ever reduction in net migration. “In total, this package, plus our reduction in student dependants, will mean about 300,000 fewer people will come in future years than have come to the UK last year.” Along with raising the salary threshold and scrapping the “shortage occupation list”, Cleverly announced that social care workers would no longer be allowed to bring their dependants when they came to work in the UK. He also said people living in the UK – including British citizens – would now be allowed to sponsor family members to move to the UK only if the person living in the UK earned £38,700, up from £18,600 currently. Finally, the government is asking the Migration Advisory Committee to review the rules for those who have completed undergraduate degrees in the UK. A spokesperson for Downing Street called the package “the biggest clampdown on legal migration ever”. They added: “We believe this is a package which will enable us to significantly reduce numbers whilst achieving economic growth.” It forms one part of a two-part plan to reduce the numbers of people coming into Britain legally and illegally. This week Cleverly is likely to fly to Kigali to sign a new asylum treaty with Rwanda, with ministers ready to bring forward new legislation in an effort to finally kickstart the government’s Rwanda plan.

If someone does not qualify under those rules, they will still be allowed to bring in family members if they have sufficient savings. Under current rules that figure is £62,500, but the government is consulting over whether to increase it.
Lawyers and applicants say, however, that it has led to distress and confusion, with many families already in the process of applying for visas now unsure of what the changes will mean for them. Kelly Robinson, an American PhD student living in Norwich with her partner, Owen Sennitt, had applied for her spousal visa last week, confident Sennitt’s job as a local journalist would be enough to qualify for it. Now she believes she may have to return to the US after eight years living in Britain. “It is a real shock,” she said. “The entire life we have built is being taken away from us overnight.” Nick Gore, a partner at Carter Thomas solicitors, said: “This is devastating for many people that just about meet the existing financial requirements. There were way more people involved than just Ryan and Evan…. and Evan was an executive producer yes but he was not involved in the beginning of the project. He was actually brought on kind of late. And he wasn’t involved in things like contacting families, he’s already said his job as a producer was creative, as in giving input into makeup and costume looks. Evan said he didn’t actually have much power, he couldn’t even ask for a script to be rewritten.
that definitely was not something evan peters was assigned to do. and quite frankly, i really don't see what purpose there is with the conversation about who, when and if anyone consulted with family members before making this show. because there is simply no possible way to honor the wishes nor satisfy ALL of the people who were affected. i'm really not sure what people who want this to have happened imagine when they talk about "contacting family members".
i don't know what ryan did or didn't do, but i know for sure he didn't assemble an advisory board of family members of dahmer's victims and ask for them to vote on whether or not he should make a netflix series about their loved one's killer. even if an attempt at contact was made, it wasn't a misty scene with ryan murphy in a sweater vest appearing at the doorstep of some heartbroken mother with his beanie clutched to his chest, asking if they could speak about her son. that's just not how these things work, and it's not just because ryan murphy is a shitstain of a human being. not trying to be insensitive here, but it's just not realistic how some people act like there's never been a movie or tv show about serial killers before and everyone involved needed special permission to create a show involving a murderer. there's been about a thousand movies, documentaries, series, books, etc. about dahmer's crimes alone. i'm not willing to entertain anyone clutching their pearls about this.
