That bit in the intro of The Darkthrop Prophecy where Gyendal was talking to the darklings and Mordred suddenly showed up out of nowhere and I'm just... I bet Gyendal was super annoyed inside, he's just scared of Mordred for whatever reason (I would've loved to know how this all happened in the first place, aaaa, but alas).
Also I had this headcanon that as vampire Gyendal has slightly-"spiked" hair like Te'ijal's faceset, but as human he just looks more like his sprite (hair down). I forgot why, maybe it's because I used to be less good at drawing spiky hair and got lazy.

Part 2 of ??? in my Drakenierveyond art series: Mel Darkthrop and Edward Pendragon in the Nier Reincarnation outfits of androids 2B and 9S! I don’t remember if Ed’s “call me Ed” thing ever really got a follow-up, but when I found a similar piece of dialog from 9S I got reminded of that.
I got no story this time around, but enjoy my first piece of art for 2023, which is also a celebratory piece in celebration of the Nier Automata anime’s first episode!

Gyendal but (kind of) in the official game faceset style. Kind of. The game art is too small to see so it’s a bit hard referencing them. Oh well.

Stella's character could be better.
As a little girl, she was already brought up to be a guardian of the Light...? Orb. She spent her life dedicated to it. But, no one looks for her. No one is really concerned. She must be an orphan. When the people of Naylith hold celebrations or festivals, do they look for her? Does she envy them when she hears music and song and merry making?
This makes her an easy target for baddies like Gyendal. Gyendal first learns about the guardian of the Light Orb, tries to lure her away from the Orb by engaging her in battle, but she is too strong for him, because she was chosen as the guardian for a reason.
So he switches tactics. He learns of the guardian's plight; her envy. Has she known of the sun? Has she even known of the moon. Perhaps not. So he steals his sister's sun block (which is why Te'ijal no loner has any), uses a glamour to pretend to be a concerned Naylithian, and charms Stella into trusting him. Because she longs for a friend, she eventually forgets about her duty, comes to hate the Light Orb that stole her life, and begins to desire the outside world.
One night, Gyendal successfully invites her outside. As it is nighttime, she finally beholds her namesake before her: the stars. As she revels in the beauty of the dark sky, Gyendal pushes her off the ledge and off Naylith, shouting about vampires attacking them.
I've no idea where I'm going with this now, beyond Stella having good reason to smash the Orb because it's a bad thing to her, and to help Gyendal because he taught her about the world and showed her her namesake.
Uh. That's it.
