thinking about silvia and character archetypes and how her ingenue role is so typical for young women but not for latina lesbians? like i'm certain i don't need to remind everyone that there are so, so few latina characters out there who are...not badass, or sexy, or hypercompetent.

like i love badass sexy hypercompetent latinas in fiction and reality! those are all good things to be! but in so many cases we are all those things because we have to be. Meanwhile I wanted Silvia to have a girlhood, you know? She did not grow up too fast. She was shielded from the worst things of life until she was an adult. She is equally gentle and opinionated, good-hearted and sharp, a children's book protagonist who grew up to face the horrors, who only knows to face them with the sunshiney playbook that got her this far.

And if the horrors break her, she won't break into a wisecracking badass or her equally marketable sister, the chastened matriarch. Whatever Silvia becomes will be so disgusting to the male gaze that they'll spit her out :) :)
