I think 2019 changed my opinion on the whole horror movie genre. I used to say I hated horror movies, because I hate gore, I hate jump scares, the characters tend to feel more like rehashed tropes that make the same stupid decisions every movie than real, relatable, fleshed out people, a lot of movies in this genre have deep misogynist and racist undertones, etc.

But holy shit I’ve been binging some of the top horror movies that came out last year and they’re all really fucking good??? I highly recommend watching Midsommar, Ready or Not, The Lighthouse, and Parasite. Who would have thought to tell a break-up story through the horror genre, and have it work so goddamn well? Using horror to make hard-hitting critiques of capitalism and the moral bankruptcy of the rich??? Yes please. Horror movies being funny without being campy or in bad taste??? About time. Horror movies having beautiful cinematography while still being horrifying???? Amazing. And, most importantly, horror movies not feeling like they’re singling out women and minorities for the worst and most gruesome and humiliating death scenes??? Thank you, Jesus.
