13 Books Tag Game

i read a ton of non-fiction for academic and interest reasons, but i'm only considering fiction for this!

1) The last book I read:

I know I just said I was only talking about fiction, BUT I recently read Audre Lorde's memoir, The Cancer Journals, and I would highly recommend it. Lorde was such an incredible writer (i would recommend her poetry, too), and this book is half memoir and half sections from the personal diary she kept during and after her journey with breast cancer. Lorde was a self-professed Black lesbian feminist, and had unique and powerful takes on womanhood, cancer, and life in general.

2) A book I recommend:

I always recommend Perfume the Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind! It's one of my favorite books.

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

I've been working my way through Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and averaging about two days per book, so...lol. I would also add Carolina de Robertis's Gods of Tango, I think I read all 400 pages in one sitting.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

I loooove to reread books. One of my absolute favorite go-to comfort books is Bambi by Marjorie Benton Cooke -- it's not about the deer, it's sort of a romcom? The characters are all so vivid and fun! You have the main character, Bambi, who is a very Anne of Green Gables type character -- she's independent, imaginative, a bit of a daydreamer, loves to dance, and decides one day to be a writer. Then there's her adoptive father, the Professor, who is a mathematician and just an eccentric little old man. Then there's Jarvis -- the poor poverty-stricken playwright with his head in the clouds that very clearly thinks he's the main character of this story (he is, kind of. He's the love interest, but not in the way you think). That was long, but it's honestly one of my favorite books! Marjorie Benton Cooke wrote a handful of really fun books in her lifetime that just never got super popular (I also love Cinderella Jane and The Cricket, which are connected but can be read alone).

5) A book on my TBR:

My fiction TBR is currently sitting at 141, so...random selection: Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca! It was highly recommended by a friend.

6) A book I’ve put down:

I have a rule where, unless the issue is stylistic and I just can't bear the author's writing, I have to power through 50% of the book before I can quit, in case it gets better later. A lot of times, this works, and I end up really liking the book! But one book I tried my absolute hardest to like and just couldn't manage it (quit at 70%) was A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. I found the narrator unlikable in an annoying way and the story itself boring (how do you make serial killing and cannibalism boring??) IDK. It came highly recommended and apparently was super popular, but it wasn't for me.

7) A book on my wish list:

Let us Descend by Jesmyn Ward! It came out last year, but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet (fingers crossed my library has a copy by the time I have some free time to read).

8) A favorite book from childhood:

Silksinger, the second book in the Faeries of Dreamdark series by Laini Taylor. The series was never finished, but the characters from Silksinger hold a special place in my heart. One of the main characters is called Hirik Mothmage, for reference how much I love this book, lol.

9) A book you would give to a friend:

Ooh, good question. I recently gave someone my copy of Boccaccio's Decameron, because I think it's funny!! I really feel like if people can get through the language, they'll be dead laughing at some of the stories.

10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own

I have a handful! My favorite is probably a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's works that's bound in a nice cover.

11) A nonfiction book you own:

Many, lol. Mostly digital -- I try not to hoard physical books unless I really really love them, because I just don't have the space. Something I read a few years ago and still think about often is Dorothy Roberts's Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty, which talks about how the 20th century (U.S.) struggle for reproductive rights looked very different for white women and Black women (for Black women, it was essentially the right to reproduction). Her newer book Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Recreate Race in the Twenty-First Century is a great follow-up read.

12) What are you currently reading:

Currently re-reading another memoir, The Surrendered: Reflections by a Son of Shining Path by José Carlos Agüero. Picking up Pandora by Anne Rice as soon as I have some time for fiction.

13) What are you planning on reading next?

Besides the rest of the Vampire Chronicles, I really want to read Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist (another friend recommendation).

I LOVE TALKING ABOUT BOOKS LET'S GOOOOO. I knew my English degree would come in handy at some point. I've read a decent amount of non-fiction, so I'll try to cover a number of topic bases here:

5 non-fiction books

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. I'll admit I didn't know much about apartheid going into it and I found it to be a decent primer. It's been a while since I've read it, but I remember not being able to put I down. It is as heartbreaking as it is humorous as it is enlightening.

Hunter: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay. This may no be for everybody as it deals with the trauma of rape and also living in this world in a fat body. As someone who has had body issues pretty much her whole life, this book really made me feel understood. But like I said, heed the warnings. (If you can't find it in yourself to read this book, Bad Feminist is an excellent essay collection from her.)

This Will Be My Undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female, and Feminist in (White) America by Morgan Jerkins. A++, the chapter on Michelle Obama made me cry.

Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies by Michael Ausiello. Pop culture fans know Ausiello, but this is a book about the love he and his husband shared that was cut short by a severe form of cancer. It is incredibly sad - the tittle really doesn't leave anything to the imagination - but at its core this is a story about love. I cried through the last 50 pages so, you know, fair warning. (They just turned this into a movie too.)

Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality by Sarah McBride. Once again, someone dies, but her story is pretty remarkable. I picked up a few trans-centric memoirs after reading this and while I still haven't read them (it's been a bad reading year for me) I did find this, like Born a Crime, to be a pretty good primer about the legal side of existing as a trans person.

Bonus: Life Will Be the Death of Me...And You Too! by Chelsea Handler. Explores privilege, dealing with grief, and what we can do to make the world and ourselves better with her usual amount of humor and a big heaping of heart.

General nonfiction authors I enjoy for essay collections: Michael Arceneaux, Samantha Irby, Sarah Colonna (comedian, very funny stories),

5 animals I'd cuddle or pet:

I'd cuddle a fennec fox in a heartbeat. I love their big ears and tiny bodies. I saw a TikTok once where someone described them as Versace chihuahua and I died.

I'd love to pet a great white shark. I've loved sharks since I was 8 and I just think they're equal parts terrifying and majestic.

Cuddle an otter. I'm obsessed with their tiny hands.

Also cuddle a lion cub. Tthey're just really fucking cute.

I'd also love to pet a rhino. They're just so cool and what's been done to their populations is so sad and they're also just very very cool animals.

i was really impressed by onana yesterday and saw today that a lot of spurs fans on twitter are talking about wanting him on our team, what are your thoughts? what’s his play style like? what do you think his price point would be?

anon i’ve been wanting to talk about him for so long and this ask came at such a perfect time thank you 😭 i will be yapping a lot under the cut but my main thoughts are 1) i think he would be incredible for us and i love him 2) he’s an absolute monster in defence. versatile, strong, tall, smart 3) i think he’d be quite expensive, i don’t see everton selling him for less than £60 million unless they have to for FFP reasons, im guessing somewhere between £50-80 million.

okay. i’ve also been seeing our fans on twitter talk about wanting him and ive been liking every single tweet because yes!!!! we would absolutely be better with him in our midfield!!!!

firstly, he’s a young and versatile player (he’s only 22!) he was asked to play cb in belgium’s game vs ireland which is an odd position for him but played very well and without complaint. as a person he’s incredibly mature and humble when speaking for belgium, absolutely future captain material and i think he would fit in very well personality wise at spurs as well. he normally plays as a central or defensivemidfielder i believe but can switch to attacking and now to cb whenever needed which is perfect for us.

he’s an absolute monster in defence. tall, strong, incredibly long legs that can sweep the ball out of any player as you saw yesterday, and pretty good vision as well! everton in general are just huuuge but he’s about 195 cm i believe so he’d be vital for us when we’re defending those pesky corners 😖 he’s also great at header goals because he’s so damn tall that no one can get to the ball before him. he’s also not very injury prone, he’s had small injuries here and there but nothing that keeps him out too long.

his debut for belgium was very impressive and he was even called up to the world cup which was a pleasant surprise. one of his best strengths is his ball carrying ability, he’s insane with transition. he reminds me a bit of mousa in the way that he’s quicker than you expect, insanely strong, and amazing at carrying the ball.

i know united, arsenal, barcelona, and chelsea(?) are all interested in him as well which gives you some insight into how good of a player he is. i think barca made an offer of £50 mil and was rejected by everton because they wanted more which is fair. i mean i believe we have the funds for him and i think he’s such an adaptable player that he could easily work in ange’s system so i really hope we show interest in him and act quickly in the summer.

sorry that this was all over the place i was just so excited to talk about him LOL i love him so much. idk if you know that belgium have had their drama recently with courtois and him whining about not getting the armband but amadou was quick to shut down any talks of that drama which is another reason i love him. he always says that as long as he gets to wear the country’s badge he’s happy and honoured and will always fight to keep his position in the belgium squad. he would die for the badge, he would be absolutely perfect for us.

reflection 05-18

11:22pm - today i woke up at likeee 10:40 and got like 7 hours of sleep. this was not good bc i had only 20 minutes to get ready and meet ranen so we could go get bagels. the bagel was really good tho lmao i got one w cream cheese and raspberries and passionfruit on it. then i went to the mall w jamie and kelly to get our ears pierced ! i got my second on one ear and then she helped me put one through my almost closed first ones. that one hurt more highkey i can barely feel my other one. i got butterflies and i think they are so cute even if my ears are uneven now oops. and they undercharged me by like $50 hehehe. anyway then i went to kerckhoff and talked to people and then i went to class yay. i got pizza and went to hang out w some club people and even though less people than we wanted to showed up it was still a good time. then i went to bplate w ashley and chelsea and coincidentally ran into a few people hehehe. i got cafe 1919 w vanna and she is so cool and funny lol and now bc of her and ranen i have good date ideas. i had to fix my tote bag w a hair tie now i am preparing a dance and watching audioless lecture w some of my club friends bc i found an airpod ! but its dead and i dont have the case to charge it. also thinking rn that i might have lost it again sometime today. i have caffeine today so hopefully i can get through a decent amount.

SPOILER alert for DERRY GIRLS derry girls ended so dumb. I really like the penultimate episode with Halloween and the classic hijinks and the classic group dynamics we’ve come to love, ending with Clare getting her first kiss and the group cheering and then immediately afterword learning her dad has suddenly died. That’s what the whole show is about; how can you be a moody teenager just trying to hang out and grow up when you’re also intimately surrounded by the most tragic death and loss and fear. It’s really poignant.

But then!! The last episode Clare’s actor is gone to film stupid Bridgerton or whatever, the rest our gang just sits around moping about a party we the audience haven’t been brought to care about and supposedly being in a fight out of no where. And it’s 50 minutes long?? I liked the background parts about the voting and Erin’s voiceover at the end and Chelsea Clinton lol but the bulk of it was very disappointing to me ☹️ all that for nothing

Her father, Alistair now manages the company but under a different name

Her mother’s side of the family comes from old money...something about horses?

Her mother, Connie holds many events and seems to make $ from them but Chelsea isn’t quite sure what the woman does or if it’s fully legal

The family is all about protecting their image & if you don’t cut it, there will be repercussions

hey girlypops! here is part 5!!! thanks for the feedback on the last part - i've gone back through and edited slight bits to make it more straightforward who her brother is and who it isn't. Nothing has been changed to the story line so no need to go back and re-read (unless you want to lol love yas). Part 5 is a whole lot of fun! Day rolls into night, which rolls into the next day and before she knew it Amelia had been under the Mykonos sun for 5 days. Her brother and his teammates, who she should now probably refer to as her friends as well, did nothing but welcome her into their group with open arms and tried to include her in every activity they were doing. Most times she declined their invitation, opting to just relax on her own. She was very comfortable with her own company, she never felt like she needed another person to be able to exist. It was something she was proud of.

No doubt there were times she often missed companionship. She had her fair share of flings that gave her what kind of satisfaction she needed at the time, but she never felt like she needed someone else’s air to be able to breathe. This Mykonos trip, however, reminded her of how much she was beginning to miss her players. They had a group chat, La Cosa Nostra, which was probably a pretty poor group chat name but she was inducted into the already established group when she became close with some of the players & besides it was just Our Thing.

She missed the gentle bullying that she received on the daily from the serie a superstars, and also missed dishing it out to them so that they could keep their feet on the ground and their heads out of the clouds. Laying on her bed in a towel, after a nice shower, she contemplated taking up her brother’s offer from earlier in the evening. Does she go out and meet him and their mates at the club? Why not?

Getting up off her bed, she put on some makeup for the first time in a few days, making her feel somewhat human again, blow dried her freshly washed hair and put on her favourite Camilla bikini, covered up by a white slightly-sheer and flowy mini dress. Putting on her white sneakers and grabbing her cross body bag, comfort was the theme of tonight, and also because she wasn't in the mood to break her ankle on the grecian cobblestones.

Walking to the club that her brother had messaged her the name of, she noticed a ridiculously long line to get in which was honestly long enough for her to consider just going home, but she had committed to the plans & her brother was already expecting her - plus she had already put on her mascara and she was not wasting it. Approaching the line she went to join the back when her arm caught that of someone else walking past her.

“Sembra che tu non riesca a starmi lontano, vero?” (you can't seem to stay away from me, can you?) Looking up, I had linked arms with my midfield maestro, Jorginho. Who was smiling down at me with the cheeky grin that told me he saw me coming and couldn't help himself.

“Ciao! Come sei stato? Che sorpresa incontrati qui!” (Hi! How have you been? What a surprise running into you here!) I begin to say to him as I kiss both his cheeks in greeting.

“I’ve been good, enjoying time off as a double champion” He joked with me. He was right, he was a double champion and no one could take that away from him.

“Bella Amelia, this is Thiago. I play with him at Chelsea, which I'm sure you already knew. Thiago, this is the brains behind the organisation, Amelia” Jorginho introduced me to his Chelsea counterpart, which he was correct about - i did already know exactly who he was.

“Are you guys coming into Tropicana? I’m meeting up with my brother and his mates - some of them play with you guys at Chelsea. You should join us!” It took very little convincing for the two footballers, who looked like they were a couple hours into their long night, to join me in the club.

Unsurprisingly, we got let into Tropicana quite quickly. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the two mega famous and ridiculously good looking footballers I had looped around each of my arms. Walking through the club, the smell of cigarette smoke and vodka wafting around me, I managed to find the british players.

“Now now boys, no bad blood here! I know you all managed to get over my Italian affiliation so don’t hold it against my boy Jorgi here!” I address the group jokingly, as I wrap my right arm around his neck and he wraps his left around my waist.

Of course the Chelsea boys welcome him with open arms, they’ve known both Thiago and Jorgi longer than they’ve known me. The other boys offer their hellos before continuing to dance and drink with their mates. I say hi to everyone, give a big hug to my brother and Kyle (my chosen brother) before I'm wrapped into another hug I wasn't expecting.

“I’ve got to admit, you give a good hug” I say as I whisper into his ear.

“You’re a pretty easy person to hug, Mils”

“Always a smooth talker you are, Jack”

We parted and I grabbed myself a drink before spending the night dancing on top of the table with the girlfriends of the boys that I had only just been introduced to. Bonding over the fact that I was desperate for some female companionship, and also that I was the only single girl in the group, leading to the conclusion that they needed to be my wingwoman...all of them.

The night thereafter was spent finding suitable prospects for my whirlwind night of fun and romance, which I insisted wasn't necessary but also couldn't help but admit that it excited me just a little. It had been a while since I was close with a guy in that sense, and to be honest, the tequila shots that the girls had me doing was loosening me up in more ways than one.

Feeling the need for a break and some fresh air, I grabbed my purse and walked outside to sit along the retaining wall. We had reached that part of the evening where there was no chance I wasn't going to be allowed back into the club - the bouncers and security guards becoming more relaxed and carefree as it neared the time that the sun would reappear. Without thinking twice, I asked for a cigarette from some guys standing outside and a quick light, before returning to my little spot on the wall.

“They’re right bad for you, ya know” A voice to my right startled me.

“Jesus! You need to stop scaring me like that!” I shrieked.

“Nah not Jesus, just Chilly. However the beard has me thinking I do look a little bit God-like these days..no?” He says as he runs his fingers through the barely-there beard. Sure I could agree with stubble, maybe even a little bit more than stubble, but a beard? Not yet. However, I wasn't about to dim his sparkle.

“I like the beard, Chilly.” I confirmed.

“I like you, Mils” Wow ok. Straight to the point then.

“Well thanks, you’re not so bad yourself.” I tried to play it off, it was obvious we had both consumed far too much alcohol this evening and the cigarette was currently working wonders in its purpose of sobering me up.

“Ya know, the girls were out there tonight looking for your Greek Adonis to come and sweep you off your feet. They were looking a bit too hard though, if you know what i mean” he sweet talks me, and its working.

“Wow Ben, you’re really out here laying it on thick tonight - factor 50 i would say. I’m sure you’re just looking through rose coloured glasses right now” I joked back with him. I can’t say I didn't notice all of his longing looks, extra attention to me, constant protection when we would be out in public, but I knew at the end of the week that I would be going back to Turin, so there wasn’t any point.

Finishing up our little chat (read: heavy flirting session), we headed back inside together to join the group. Before long, Jorgi comes up to me with a drink and a smug smile on his face.

“Che cosa?” (what?) I questioned him in Italian, trying to limit as many people understanding our conversation as possible.

“Cosa succede a mykonos, rimane a mykonos, no?” (what happens in mykonos, stays in mykonos, no?) He says as he leans into my ear. To anyone else it would just look like two friends trying to have a conversation in a loud club, but I understood his message loud and clear.

“non sto facendo niente di male, né l'ho mai fatto. non voleva etichette, quindi è quello che ha ottenuto” (i'm not doing anything wrong, nor have i ever. he wanted no labels so that’s what he got.) I say back firmly. Jorgi let go of my shoulders and moved to stand in front of me.

“It’s ok tesoro (darling), I’m sure Federico would agree with you” He said back to me in English, it was obvious that he wanted someone around to understand the premise of our conversation. He smiled cheekily at me, before taking a swig of his drink and dancing backwards into the crowd as I shook my head at him.

Jorgi and I developed the kind of friendship that would last through time. We were equals. We listened to each other's problems, offered the advice that we needed to hear & not necessarily wanted to hear. We promoted each other's happiness and tried to get each other to not take life too seriously. This was his way of bringing me back down to earth, reminding me of what I have waiting for me back in Turin, but also making sure I knew what was right in front of me. He left the decision up to me to make, but he played his part to make sure I knew all of my options. He really was a good friend, which would make my next career decision a little bit more challenging than anticipated.

Sometimes, though, just getting her to the plane was the most challenging part of the day. As my 8 a.m. days started inching minutes, then hours earlier, I would turn on the lights in the salon at 5 or 6 a.m. and then call the White House operator and make sure HRC got her wake-up call. One morning, after HRC had returned from a late night of campaigning, I received a predawn page from the White House operator with a surprise message. The First Lady had not responded to the scheduled wake-up call. I told the operator to wait fifteen minutes and try again. Thirty minutes later, Isabelle Goetz, the lovely stylist who came by several times a week to blow out HRC’s hair, began looking at her watch. I asked the operator to try again, but still no luck. Should she call the President’s side of the bed? No, I told her. Now I had to figure out how to rouse HRC without waking up the forty-second President of the United States. I walked out of the salon, past the President’s Dining Room, into the West Sitting Hall, and came upon Anita, one of the housekeepers, standing in front of the door to the sitting room holding a freshly steamed black pantsuit in one hand and a melon-colored sweater set in the other. “Any signs of life?” I asked. Anita shook her head. With Anita close behind me, I tiptoed into the narrow hallway, then stopped at the entrance to the bedroom. I opened the door to the pitch-black room, knocking lightly and whispering, “Mrs. Clinton…” Once my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I inched toward the bed, leaned over, and shook her shoulder. Hard. She woke up with such a loud start that the President bolted up too, with a “What? What?” I cried out “Sorry!” and Anita ran backward down the hall. There was such a commotion that I could have sworn even the ghost of Lincoln had been awakened. None of us could keep a straight face for the rest of the morning. HRC, in her usual direct manner, looked up from her briefing book as Isabelle rushed to fix her hair, and said, “Next time, just knock louder.”

On weekends and during every Senate recess we were in New York. We’d fly up and spend Saturdays and Sundays traipsing from event to event. We worked, napped, and inhaled most of our meals in Scooby, but to the great relief of the Secret Service, she never actually attempted to drive it herself. Still, she never left home without her driver’s license. Every day, multiple times a day, I would overhear her on calls with her husband, calls that could be quite amusing. One afternoon, during a long drive, she called the house, and soon after they began talking I heard her tell him where he could find the Windex. Then, after another second, she repeated, “It’s called Windex, Bill. No, under the sink.” I don’t know if he didn’t hear her or didn’t know what Windex was or just didn’t know where it was kept. What I do know is that in his eight years at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Bill Clinton had never had to rifle around under the kitchen sink for Windex.

Entertainment Spotlight: Adam Faison, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay

Actor Adam Faison stars in Freeform’s new series, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay. You may also recognize him from Into the Dark, HBO’s Here, Now, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Fosters, and Grace and Frankie. On the film front, he currently wrapped production on the upcoming Netflix film Yes Day, opposite Jennifer Garner. Adam took the time to answer some of our questions. Check it out:

What’s an issue that you’d love for the cast to tackle in an upcoming episode of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay?

Maybe Alex and Nicholas experimenting with opening up their relationship! It’s something that I, and I think many others in the queer community have experienced, so I feel it would resonate with a lot of people to see an atypical relationship depicted on screen.

Did you pull from any of your own experiences in your portrayal of Alex?

The relationship with Matilda and Alex is one that mirrors the one that Kayla and I have in real life! We got very close over the filming process: we’d run lines every Sunday on FaceTime, go to the Museum of Death because she is very into true crime and the paranormal (I got nauseous afterward which she still asserts is because I had dairy that day and I am lactose intolerant), and help each other with self- tapes (she is “very method” and one time for a scene she used a real “Kill Bill” style sword and another time she used a literal dead trout she bought from Ralph’s. Peep my IG for receipts). All this is to say that we got very close, so it naturally made it easier for us to connect on camera. I love her very much.

Do you have a favorite character arc from season one of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay?

I think the arc in one of the later episodes where Nicholas and Alex get a call from Matilda that she wants to host a threesome at the house. It’s a genuinely hilarious moment because these pseudo parental figures really fumble to try and figure out what to tell her.

Can you take us through a typical day on set?

Oy! Okay ready?

Wakeup, report to set.

Head to the dressing room to change and retrieve shooting “Sides” (an excerpt of scenes from the episode script that you will shooting that day)

Hair.

Makeup.

Camera Blocking rehearsal (for the director/ DP/ heads of department to see how to scene will look so they can plan accordingly for their respective technical aspects).

Meet the bugs. So, if there are bugs in a scene we do a rundown with our groovy bug wrangler, Diana Terranova, wherein she gives us the low down on how to handle those particular insects. For example, tarantulas like to be cupped upside down in a hand because they feel safe that way and they like human warmth.

Run lines for pacing with other actors/ maybe director while waiting for cameras to finish setting up.

Get called back to set.

Rehearse for the camera again full out.

“Last looks” HMU touch-ups.

Shoot!

Break for lunch.

Look for “entities” on set with Kayla’s ghost hunting equipment.

Maybe play guitar and sing in my dressing room.

Report back to set for “touch-ups.”

Shoot again.

Wrap!

What’s the funniest photo that you have on your phone right now (either share or describe it)?

“We met at Starbucks. Not at the same Starbucks but we saw each other at different Starbucks across the street from each other.”

Do you have any fun facts about the making of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay that fans would be surprised to find out?

That all the sex scenes are real. Lol jk. Um. I guess that any quirks that we have IRL, Josh loves to put into the show. He loves that honesty. Like for example, I as Adam tend to mimic people’s mannerisms and vernacular when I am around them for an extended period of time. Lilia, who plays Drea on the show, told me it’s called “echolalia.” So Josh noticed this and when we're in argument scenes he would have Alex slip and say things that Nicholas would say. For example in episode 4 I say “bloody socks!” and in episode 8 I mirror the way he says “funny!” in his accent. It made for some really fun and genuine moments between our characters.

If you could have a conversation with any character that you’ve played in the past, who would you talk to and what would you talk about?

Josh from The Fosters. I look back and I can see that I was so married to my choices, I couldn’t be free. I wish I could’ve told myself to trust my instincts more, have fun, and just respond truthfully in the moment.

Describe each of the following in one word: Who you are, what you value the most, and what you’d be if you were a food item.

What’s next for you?

I did VO [voice over] in a doc called P.S. Burn this Letter Please about unearthed letters between drag queens in the 50s/60s that’s premiering soon! I'm so excited to be a part of telling that untold queer history. And other than that, just living life. Soaking up the “joie de vivre” as one of my high school friends Chelsea King once said in a paper before she passed. I revisit that paper every year and it gives me new meaning each time I read it. I think right now for me it means playing more music, writing more poetry, and just taking in the sun more. It's cheesy but I actually stop and smell the roses these days. Have you ever done that? If not, you should really try it :)

I feel like this past couple days have been shitty in this fandom (bye s4, some people don't even have all the seasons in the game). To say that fusebox messed up is an undestatement.

Okay so- apologies for this long ask, I went through Lucas playthrough for the nth time and I had a sudden realisation that out of all the career-oriented guys Lucas seems to be the one who actually looks like he's ready for a child, idk but he's got this look that screams "I'm mature and responsible" y'know? Also he looks like a real dad in cmm LMAO (that damn moustache is growing on me, so weird but I kinda like it now 😂)

SO, as a fellow Lucas stan, do you have fluffy hcs about dad!Lucas? Also, feel free to add the other guys too, I think we all need cute and fluffy stuffs during this time 😚

Oh, yeah, it's been a mess. There's not a single thing not-wrong with all that's happening.

DO NOT apologize for "long ask"s!! I love them!! And about Lucas... In short: I agree with you. But then again, my Lucas is slightly different from other people's depictions of him. (I don't think I'll ever like the moustache but... Given that my fc for him is Daniel Henney and he can pull it off, it's at least less upsetting).

I DO HAVE SOME HCs FOR DAD!LUCAS. At least for TTT!Lucas lol.

Under the cut because you have unleashed a monster, anon... You have been warned. Run while you can.

- First, big, huge one: It wouldn't be an accident. Like, a pregnancy might. The pregnancy won't. I don't think Lucas would get into a serious relationship with someone who didn't stand at least pretty close to his views on parenthood: If you don't want to be a parent, you shouldn't be a parent. So it would 100% be a choice and not "something that happened and now we have to deal with".

- I think he is conflicted about it. He says, and I'm quoting, "I'm not sure I'm the marriage and kids type, anyway". He's 27, if he was completely against it he would have decided by now, and he would be upfront about it. He would want to get it straight before the relationship got any further, "If you're dreaming about a big family I'm not the guy for you". But he doesn't.

- I do believe though that if he was with someone who definitely didn't want them he wouldn't find it hard to give up on the idea. We know he's not dreaming with a huge family, all I'm saying is that as far as we know he hasn't taken the possibility completely off the table.

- Just one kid... if it's a girl. IMAGINE LUCAS WITH A BABY DAUGHTER. The man would melt. You'd need a boat to move around after that much drooling. I'm so in love with this idea that I think if he had a boy he would absolutely love him but might risk a second one to try and get a girl too.

- Time is of the essence. I believe part of his reluctance has to do with him wanting to join DWB and that not being really compatible with a family. I recently googled it for a prompt, and the minimum you're away is 9-12 months. So the man is in a dilemma, isn't he? Because...

- Lucas won't be an old dad. He would want to run around and actually play with his kid, carry them on his shoulders, not to mention the sleepless nights at the beginning. Lucas is not having a kid at 40, he's done the maths and he's not going there. If he has them, he wants to enjoy them. So the "soon or never" is popping into his head every time the subject comes up.

- Now, for the actual parenting, he would help but that doesn't mean he wouldn't hate part of it. "I'll get up every time they cry at night as long as I don't have to make them burp or change the nappies, I'm begging you..."

- Have you seen those photos of the kid sleeping next to the dad in the same position?

- "Dad, you're home!!!" *Runs to him and hugs his legs*

- A good, reliable nanny so mum and dad can get a weekend away every once in a while.

- Very overprotecting, but also determined to raise an independent child. He would obsess over them having everything they need (and likely everything they want, too), but would struggle with the fear of spoiling them rotten and raising an entitled annoying brat. Basically he's afraid his child would end up being what people always thought he was.

- Would "ask mum" them because he knows (all of them know) if they make puppy eyes he will give in.

- When they're out, the kid falls asleep on him, not on her.

- *Looking at the toys lying all over the living room* "Lucas, chill. We have a four-year-old, of course the house is gonna be a mess. Leave them play in peace, they'll learn how to tidy up later."

- Best school available, would also insist they learn at least one language.

- No tolerance for lying.

- He would encourage curiosity. To ask why about everything (he'll half regret it later...), and reason through explanations, and dig deepen when they're older. His kid would be smart as hell, we all know this.

- Old cartoons on Sunday mornings. Like, really old, the ones he used to watch as a kid. Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Hannah-Barbera... Quality shit. Paw Patrol my ass.

- Not a lot of loving words, though. I feel like he wouldn't say "I love you", but rather show it. Hugs, gifts, and general protectiveness.

I will stop now, though, I feel like I could go on forever, I'm sorry (ask me again and I'll come up with more istg). I then have specific HC for him being a dad to a boy and to a girl, but for once I'll shut up. If you're curious feel free to send me another ask, but for now I'm leaving it here.

Hi! If you don’t mind, would you share a lot more of dad!Lucas headcanons please!

Well I do not mind at all! I'm sorry if there's people wishing I'd shut up about it lol Here is the first part of these, just in case, and here are some comments on pregnancy and choosing a nanny. And sorry it took me so long to get to this!

So, some more general HC and then I'll add some specific for a girl or a boy because why not.

- That child is getting technology time so, so limited… They're gonna be playing outside (likely taking classes for a chosen sport), they'll get tons of pencils and paper to draw, paint, jigsaw puzzles, cubes, books, playdough… Physical things, rather than an iPad and Kids Netflix 24/7. I HC Lucas as working in rehabilitation, and some fellow psychologist will remark the importance of early cognitive and motor stimulation. And he'll take it very seriously, even if it requires a bit of extra work from him and MC.

- He would be the one teaching them how to walk (again, according to my work HC for him, he already does that with grown people so he would take this as a personal mission).

- OBSESSIVE about proper nutrition while they grow up. Lots of research about when children can start eating certain things, swatting forks away screaming "ARE YOU INSANE?? DO YOU KNOW HOW ALLERGENIC TOMATOES ARE??". That kid will have no allergies and a killer immune system.

- So much frustration during the "picky eater" phase, oh my god. He can't understand why they won't eat something they used to like, and now they just want spaghettis with cream and nothing else.

- Slightly hurt if he's woken up by a distant "Mom, I had a nightmare" instead of a closer "Dad, I had a nightmare" in the middle of the night…

- His worst nightmare is the supermarket tantrum. MC knows the basic principle of: You just explain why you said "no" and let them cry their eyes out, the rest of the people know kids that age throw tantrums. But Lucas? Lucas would get anxious that people would think he's a bad father and end up giving in even if he knows he shouldn’t, and then when they don't stop because sometimes what children actually want is just to cry, he would get even more anxious and just leave the supermarket without whatever they were there for.

- Punishments are smart and evil, but effective. Nothing physical, of course, and nothing unenforceable like "No TV for a month", and nothing cruel like "Not seeing your friends for two weeks". No. Something simpler. "No TV, only for two hours, for a week". Which two hours you ask? The two hours their favourite cartoon is on. "Sure, we'll still go to your favourite park. But later. When the dog you always pet has already gone home." "Yes, you can have a cookie after lunch. Any you want, except you favourite." Little things that make a point. They didn't do anything unforgiveable so it won't merit anything big, but he'll make sure there are consequences to it.

- No family portrait, but he takes all their drawings to his practice and pins them on a board next to his desk.

- Firm believer on the "one language, one physical activity, one artistic interest" triad. The specifics in each category are up to the kid.

- "Daaaad, can we go for a ride on your bike?" "Absolutely not." "… Why?" "Because it's dangerous. No." "Why is it dangerous?" "Because it goes very fast and you can fall and get hurt." "Then we'll get another bike that's not dangerous." "All bikes are dangerous." *Points to his arm* "That one too?"

- Bonus points if after that they cry every time they see Lucas grab his helmet. "Dad, no! You're gonna die!"

- The kid would be curious about his job and think he's a doctor. He would kinda let them believe it while they're still young because explaining the difference would be a bit too complicated for a small child; a "Not exactly a doctor, but close" type of deal.

- He's so over the top when it comes to material stuff… "Dad, can you get me a book by this author?" "Which one?" "Whichever you find!" *The next day* "I got what you wanted!" *puts three bags filled with the author's entire bibliography on the table*.

- I don't like it, but he would be kind of a "suck it up" kinda parent… Not because he doesn't get that you shouldn't shake everything off but because he doesn't know how to deal with it himself. Mom would be more understanding.

- This has to do with a very specific HC from my Lucas in my fic but I figured I might as well share it. Lucas would never ever suggest it, it probably wouldn't even cross his mind, but if MC said she wanted to be a stay at home mom for a couple of years, he wouldn't oppose.

- Another personal HC (a bit too personal as it vaguely comes from actual personal experience), is that he doesn't have a bad relationship with his family. They are all just a bit distant, mostly only talking and seeing each other for Sunday brunch with very little interaction besides that (which makes some sense on a particular level but I won't get into it right now). So, while he doesn't actually resent his family, he wouldn't want his kid to feel that distance or coldness; it would be difficult because that's the way he's used to interact with family, it's what he learned, but he would make the effort and follow MC's lead on being a more loving parent.

Lucas and a daughter:

- The OG, my first dad!Lucas HC ever, from the Baby Challenge I've had written since last year, is that he would melt for the rest of his life if he had a daughter.

- She is a princess, she's perfect, and no human being will ever be good enough for her, don't @ him. No one is surprised by this headcanon, right?

- He can't say no to her, he just can't. Again, no one is surprised.

- Also, she grows up seeing him as the model of the ideal partner, seeing how he treats her mom and being taught that's how her partner should treat her.

- "Can I put make up on you?" "Sorry, honey, no." "… Well, can I give you another tattoo, then?" "… Okay."

- "Lucas, we can't keep buying her just dresses. She's a kid, she needs to run around and play, and be comfortable. Just let her be in a pair of trousers or shorts and a t-shirt." "Yeah, you're right… She looks so cute, though!" "Yes, but all those pretty dresses are going into the sandbox, you know?"

- "Lucas, why did you buy her a real tea set?" "What do you mean why? What did you want me to buy her? Plastic?" "Yes! It's a toy!" "I'm not buying her a set of plastic Barbie-pink cups. That's tacky." "Okay then, what do you think it's gonna happen if she drops one, it shatters, and she tries to clean it up without asking for help." "… She- she would ask for help." "You never know." *Suddenly pale Lucas*

Lucas and a son:

- If he's into them, sports! If he's not, Lucas won't force him.

- While Lucas is away he would ask mom or the nanny for one of his white shirts and pretend he's wearing a lab coat like his dad. Lucas would get him a tiny lab coat of his own, with the pockets and everything.

- Some physical play, as in putting him upside down or tickle wars type of deal.

- He would look up to his dad so much it's ridiculous. He's his hero, and his role model. He would copy his walk, the way he seats, the way he talks… So much so, people would insist they look exactly the same even if they don't because the "vibe" resemblance is that strong.

- Just imagine his face if the kid said he wanted to follow his footsteps profession-wise.

- The chats about how to treat women and how to stand up to bullies both for himself and for others…

- Quiet camaraderie when he's older.

Okay, I'll stop here again lol. Now I'm thinking about teens and Lucas, but if I get into that this will be a novel and we don't want that. Again, thanks for asking these! Now I want to write a dad!Lucas fic, damn you all.

Hey everyone! Just a few quick (realistic) reminders to start the week. And you might say "the fuck are you to go around giving advice like what the hell?" and to that I'll say you're totally right. But I've been having what at this point is a shitty month so I just wanted to try to, maybe, make others feel a bit better, at least regarding something I can talk about here. I still have a long way to go, so take it with a grain of salt. When I get into something I like analyzing it, and so here we are. These are all based in my own insecurities and feelings as someone who has been writing for just eight months (so I know fucking nothing about actually writing).

So, under the cut to not be as annoying, again, a few quick (realistic) reminders to start the week if you're… someone who writes:

- Your writing is not as bad as you think it is. It might not be mindblowing, but that's okay. What you see as bad is likely not really "bad" as much as it's "missing"; you have some vague idea of how it could have been better, you see the parts that you feel you half-assed, the parts you "settled for" because you "couldn't come up with something better". The reader doesn't. Writing is a skill, so as long as you keep using it it'll keep improving.

- Your OC is not as boring as you feel it is. It feels that way just because you know everything about them; there's no surprises in what you already know, but remember how you feel every time you come up with a new little canon fact about them? How cool you think it is? How well it suits them? Yeah, that's how other people feel when they learn about what to you is old news. They might be old but that doesn't mean they're boring.

- Your plot has worth. Maybe it's not perfect, it probably isn't, we all struggle with that, but it's not either perfect or shit. There is a middle, and as with your writing you're probably higher up than you think you are. You are telling a story. How many stories about something that happened at the supermarket have you heard throughout your life from different people? They're all people, they all went to a supermarket. Yes, and are all those stories the same? No, because they happened to different people in different days and different supermarkets. You have your own characters, and or your own day, and or your own supermarket.

This next one's especially for me. I hope I start following y own advice someday because it's good

- Focus on the people who encourage you, instead of on the people who don't. This has nothing to do with criticism; criticism should be considered unless it's hateful (not only because fuck people like that but also why would you follow the advice of someone hateful?). I'm just saying, don't give so much weight to the people who don't like your writing; don't let it affect you negatively more than the opinions of people who like what you do affect you positively. I know it can make you doubt yourself when you post something and it gets a certain kind of ignored, but shift focus to the people who cheers you on instead. Please, I beg you.

- If you find that you, yourself, often end up hating what you write, still write it. Write it, post it somewhere, and don't read it again. When you get someone saying that they love it, you'll hate it less. Trust me.

- Ask someone you trust to read over it, if you're doubting. I'm guilty of not doing this, I'll admit that (in my defense, when I started writing I never thought I'd publish it, and when I started publishing I didn't know anyone here. Now I wish I could be ahead enough to ask someone check it out), but do as I say and not as I do. It will calm your anxiety A LOT.

- Whatever comes to mind, write it down. This I do follow myself, and that's why I say it. I have notes that only have two lines of dialogue, or a brief description of someone waking up, or a little piece of narration that came to mind; it doesn't matter that they don't have a place yet, they probably will at some point, somewhere. I'm convinced I'm not special for this to be something that only happens to me, so trust me: sometimes those tiny phrases stand out and become one of your favorite bits. And you'll think "I wrote that with one eye open while I was falling asleep. And it's pretty good"; don't you want that? Would you rather "I thought of a nice little chat the other day but I can't remember it"?

- Maybe slightly contradictory after the last one, find a ritual to write. This is relative to how you typically write and might not apply to you, but it's worth giving it a go. If you can, find a place and make it your writing spot, have a specific playlist that you only use to write, have a cup of tea or coffee or chocolate or whatever you choose with you every time you start to write, pick a time of the day you're usually free at and sit down to write even if at first you don't manage to write anything. I could get more scientific with this, but the idea is: the brain learns. What this does is it cues your brain that "It's time to write!" and the more consistent you are the more used to it your brain will be and the less effort it'll require for you to get in the mood for writing. You'll get less anxious if you don't have much free time by knowing you have a designated period, and will help you focus. If you have a lot of free time it will stop you from going in and out of your doc constantly for hours while not doing anything else because you're "writing right now". This is not incompatible with the previous point: here is where you find a place for and/or flesh out those little ideas you put down so far.

These are the ones I can think of right now, but please add your own or argue any and all points if you want. Have a nice week!
