International Tuba Day

Underappreciated and often mocked, the tuba provides an essential role as bass in a wind or marching band, so dust off your tuba or go see a professional.

Do you all recall the least loved member of any marching band? That one sound that seemed to add so little to the overall musical experience that’s provided on the field?

No, we’re not talking about the drummers, though we can’t blame you for making that assumption. This is also marching band, not a rock band, so the bassist is ALSO the wrong answer, thanks for playing. We’re talking about the powerful “oompah” instrument that is the Tuba, and International Tuba Day celebrates the depth and diversity of sound that this beautiful brass wind is capable of producing.

So whether you know a Tuba Player, or are one today, International Tuba Day celebrates your underappreciated contribution to the arts.

History of International Tuba Day

These amazing performers really are underappreciated, and International Tuba Day gives recognition to them and all the struggles they face in the pursuit of their art. What struggles you say? Well, let’s start with the image that the world puts forth, the big heavy man with the big heavy instrument puffing away on it with cheeks like bellows.

That’s typically the first vision, and it often underscores the sheer lung capacity necessary for playing such a bombastic instrument. They’re also seen as having little to no personality, which is just utterly untrue! Playing such a lumbering instrument requires a significant amount of personality to make the performance bright and interesting!

Thankfully, we have a champion to come forth and help turn this image around. Joel Day first established this holiday in 1979 while part of the Lower Merion High School Band.

He and his fellow tuba player realized that their instruments simply failed to receive the respect and recognition they deserved. Little did he know that his efforts would result in a worldwide explosion of Tuba enthusiasm, with music being collected and performed that exalted the Tuba’s range and interest.

How to celebrate International Tuba Day

Well first off, if you’re a Tuba player, dust off that instrument and give the world a taste of what it’s been missing. The grand and powerful voice of the Tuba is amazing, and in the hands of a skilled player can definitely add a broad range of personality to any performance.

It’s deep, throaty, and not to be denied. You may be able to drown out the flutes and saxophones and violins, but the Tuba will pound right through the sound and make you feel it in your bones. International Tuba Day is your opportunity to remind the world what a Tuba player can do.

FX has updated the official description for WWDITS with a synopsis for season 5!

In season five, Nandor feels his familiar (and sometimes friend) Guillermo slipping away as he seems to be spending much more time with Laszlo, whose skills as a gentleman scientist are put to the test as he tries to solve the mystery of the strange and very secret changes Guillermo is going through. Nadja, suffering the effects of a previously-undiagnosed supernatural hex, reconnects with her family — or at least, a family — from the Old Country, Colin pursues the path of so many energy vampires before him by running for political office and The Guide tries to figure out where she fits in as the relative newcomer to this tightly-knit group who've known each other for centuries. The fifth season of What We Do in the Shadows is produced by FX Productions.

Ed Sheeran is joined by Caitriona Balfe and Philly McMahon as the star guests of this week's Late Late Show.

It's the final month with presenter Ryan Tubridy at the helm of the show. After 14 years in the hot seat, the Dubliner turns his attention to other projects.

On the release day of his latest album Subtract, UK superstar Ed Sheeran joins Ryan for an exclusive chat where the star opens up about the death of his late friend Jamal Edwards and his tough 2022 when wife Cherry was diagnosed with cancer.

The 43-year-old will detail how she missed the infamous Oscars slap from 2021 when she attended the awards for her hit movie Belfast.

The stars of the new RTÉ One show Gaelic in the Joy will also pop in for a chat about the upcoming TV show which airs on May 17 on RTÉ One.

Dublin GAA star Philly McMahon, comic Rory O'Connor (Rory Stories) and Mountjoy Prison governor Edward Mullins will discuss how they took a group of prisoners participating in a rehabilitation programme and prepared them for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play at Croke Park.

Five models will showcase the amazing designs of some of the youngsters who are competing in Junk Kouture, the largest sustainable fashion competition in the world.

The winning designs selected by a panel of judges will compete against 50 other teams from Abu Dhabi, London, Paris, Milan and New York to become the second-ever World Designer of the Year.

Celebrations are in store also, as Ryan chats to former players in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ireland Women's National Team.

Music and entertainment will be provided by singer Rachel Mae Hannon who sings her new song The Boys for her debut on the show.

The Late Late Show airs at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

Fluff headcannons

-How to describe Dante in a single word: Loud. Everything he does is loud. When he wakes up, he stretches loudly, moves around loudly, gets dressed and drops a whole bunch of stuff in the process, which is pretty loud, and even eats loudly.

-9/10 times when you come home, you'll find him shirtless in the living room, playing rock music at top volume while the smoke alarm blades in the background. If you dare enter the kitchen, you'll find that one of your appliances has exploded and pieces of it are embedded in the floor.

-Loves to wrestle with you and does not hold back. No, he won't hit you or use weapons against you, but he will be trying to pin you to the ground with all his strength, and should you manage to fight back and succeed, you'll instantly become a target. The minute you walk into a room, he'll pounce on you and a wrestling match ensues.

-Will prank you in various ways such as giving you cupcakes that are actually uncooked broccoli florets covered in frosting, or by mismatching your socks. They're harmless little jokes, but annoying ones.

-Challenges you to a dance-off almost every other week, where he will select a song and start dancing, expecting you to join in. Even if you can't dance as well as he can, he doesn't care. He honestly just wants to dance.

-Sometimes you two put on matching dinosaur suits and go confuse the fuck out of Vergil. You two literally gallop over to him and start roaring in his face. It's the strangest thing he's ever seen and not even his MOTIVATION can stop him from screaming "What the actual fuck is happening!?" And then when Dante pulls off his mask, the MOTIVATION clicks in and the night ends with you hiding behind a rock in a dinosaur costume while the bros go at it--Dante still in his costume.

-Occasionally you go out for pizza. Can't do it too often because Dante turns into a monkey when he's near it and usually destroys the entire eatery, so...

-However, if you happen to know how to make pizza at home, Dante will frigging worship you. Every night he'll be begging, "Pleeeeeease babe? PLEEEEEEEEASE make me some pizza?" And if you say no, he pulls the world's most pathetic puppy dog eyes and you relent.

-There are some occasions when you are forced to become the Mom Friend and police your boyfriend, especially when you go out. He can easily get lost in the crowd--however, there's a way to find him. All you must do is shout "I have pizza" at top volume and he'll come running.

-Unfortunatley, sometimes that isn't enough. Sometimes he can't hear you. It's times like these when you are forced to play your ultimate trump card; your guaranteed Dante GPS. In these rare situations, you must pull out your phone and call Vergil. Using the power of their twin telepathy, the Motivated One will locate his brother and literally drag him back to you by the ear.
