Sometimes I wonder how it would feel to run into you again. How I would make you realize I am not the one you left behind anymore, by meeting your eyes

unafraid.

As if it would matter if you knew. As if your judgement would set me free from these skeletal remains I once called myself. My bones still whisper the tales of my hollow past, its echoes curse through me like ghosts hunting broken promises.

I want to know I will not reduce myself to ash again by meeting your judgement. I want to know there is an end to purgatory, that if you let yourself get swallowed you can come up on the other side. I need to know I came up inside me. Not beside this phantom of myself.

30042022 - 9-1-1

oh, tell me more (always a failure in your eyes)

Sequel to out of the blue (and not entirely welcome).

This entire scenario feels like deja vu, if anyone were to ask Eddie, except for where he and his mother are in his living room in LA, and his dad is away, visiting his own mother. Other than that, everything else is pretty much the same, from the way Eddie wants to sink into his couch and disappear, to the way Helena Diaz is sitting on his coffee table in front of him, judgement written all across her face.

(He's so glad he's asked Buck to take Chris out somewhere today. Neither his son nor his best friend need to witness the shitshow he knows is about to unfold.)

"Christopher needs a mother, Eddie," Helena says, and she's starting to sound like a broken record to Eddie's ears. "He needs a proper family. He needs to be surrounded by people who can take care of him. He needs stability, and peace of mind, and to not fear that he'll end up alone in a strange city."

Eddie looks at his mother and wonders, not for the first time in his life, when she last thought about what Eddie himself needs. He doesn't blame her for her worry for Christopher (that, he understands, fully and wholeheartedly), but a tiny corner of his heart wishes, just once, that she would look at him and ask about what he needs. What he wants.

"I think I know better than you what my own son needs, mom." Helena opens her mouth at that, bristling, outrage pouring out of her every pore. Eddie cuts her off before she can say anything though. "And he won't end up alone. I gave up my job, remember? The one thing I did that made me feel like I mattered, even a little bit. I gave that up so that Chris wouldn't fear for my life anymore, and you know where that got me? Nowhere, and miserable, and with a child who feels unnecessarily guilty because of it."

"Yes, well, if you'd have just-" Helena starts, her nose turned up.

But Eddie's not done yet. "As for the other stuff... Chris had a mom. And she might be dead, and she might not have been there for him for the last few years of her life, but Chris loves her still, and I'm not going to try and replace her in his heart with someone else. He doesn't need it, doesn't want it. And I don't want that for him, either."

Helena scoffs at that, rolls her eyes like Eddie knew she would. "Christopher is a child, Eddie. A special one, a smart one, but still very much a child. He doesn't know yet what he wants, or what he needs."

And that, that right there, the way she robs his son of his agency, the way she still treats him like he's a baby who's incapable of doing anything for himself, who can't even think for himself... That pisses Eddie off more than anything in the world. "No offence, mom?" he says through clenched teeth, trying his damnedest not to let all his building fury shine through. "But that's exactly the kind of attitude on your part that made it as easy as breathing to change my will."

That shuts her up, but only for a startled second. She blinks, taken aback. "I'm sorry?"

Another time, maybe Eddie might have felt some modicum of guilt over his decision to cut his parents out of his will where raising Christopher is concerned. Another time, maybe Eddie would have planned exactly how and when he’d tell his family about it. Right now, he doesn't care. Not even a little bit. "If I were to die tomorrow,” he squares his shoulders, looks his mother in her eyes, “it's not you and dad that's gonna get guardianship over Chris."

You could hear a pin drop in the silence that follows his statement, and Eddie would like to say he feels smug. He doesn't. He only feels sort of empty inside, his anger, a supernova at first, having burned itself out for now, and for a moment, he considers standing up, going to the kitchen and getting himself a beer.

And then, in a soft, harsh whisper, Helena asks, "Who?"

Eddie sighs, leans back into the couch. Closes his eyes for a second and prays for strength. "It doesn't matter who, mom. It doesn't matter," he insists when she opens her mouth again. "As long as I'm alive and kicking. The point is that Chris has a good life here, a stable one. He's going to school, and he has friends, and he likes his teachers. He has family here, both blood related and chosen, that he can rely on for anything, if there's something I can't help him with myself. He doesn't need to be uprooted again just because you don't like or agree with the choices I've made."

He stands up then, because honestly? As far as he's concerned, the conversation is over, he’s said all he wants to say on the matter. And he does move towards the kitchen this time, because he really, really needs a drink.

"It's that boy."

Eddie closes his eyes. Breathes in, breathes out.

"Isn't it?" Helena spits where she's still sitting on Eddie's coffee table. "That friend of yours that's always around, even when he has no business to be. The one who, even right now, is God knows where with my grandson."

Eddie doesn't turn to face her, but he does open his eyes again. His head hurts. "Buck is always around because we want him around,” he says, and Helena doesn’t know him well enough (as much as she likes to think she does) to read how much he means by it. Even in his darkest, lowest moments, there has never been a day since he arrived in LA and settled at the 118, that he hasn’t wanted Buck in his life. “And he's been there for me and Chris more than you could possibly understand."

Helena huffs in what is probably disbelief, and Eddie finally turns halfway to look at her. “Oh, I think I understand, alright,” she sneers, standing up, gearing up to what is probably the tongue-lashing of Eddie’s life.

Except.

Except Eddie’s done.

Well and truly done. “It was nice seeing you, mom,” he says, with a finality he never thought himself capable of using against either of his parents. “But I’m sure you and dad have things to get back to back home.”

And with that, he turns away one last time, and heads for his fridge.
