"So... are we acknowledging you're old today or not?" Leila asks curiously, a mischievous smile on her lips as she slides him a doodle of him scaring a reporter, complete with cartoonishly sharp teeth.
"We may acknowledge," Ben replies, slipping the paper between his index and middle fingers. "We may not discuss."
He turns the college-ruled leaf face-up, holds it at about eye level, a fist's span from his brow. Frowning motile marble.
"Look at that. You're a regular Norman Rockwell." One curt laugh, and he grins somewhat, showing the caps of his teeth, which are crooked and marginally serrated but not quite triangles.
And into the hidden zip pocket the doodle goes, where Ben stashes all his secrets. He leans forward a little, another borderline maneuver to complement his somewhat grin, his not quite pointy teeth.
"And I'm genuinely charmed," he says, as his eyes trace the contours of Leila's face. Licks his lips. Doesn't blink. "I'll consider it a gift."

She brings both to him with no song and no pile of wrapped gifts. No one leapt out and cheered. No one waved streamers or balloons. There were no flowers. No confetti. No champagne. There was no fanfare.
There was only the cake, the candle, and her smile - sly and lopsided.
She whispered through the flame, holding it aloft for him “make a wish.”
No flowers, no confetti. No fanfare. None of the usual raucous ruckus (* is that too much a play on words? Or apropos? *). What bliss. However, Ben doesn't consider this. At this moment, whatever thoughts occupy Ben's mind fall on Brunnhilde like a shade over simmering sands; Brunnhilde and the proximity afforded by their mutual recklessness and their dazzling if brief misadventures in each other's spaces, against one another's skin—the oasis he doesn't yet realize is slipping through his fingers. For there's no voice in his head. No doubt. He sees future landscapes rolling off his life horizon, burning as brightly as that candle.
Ben sets the cake aside. He's not doing cake this year; he's turning twenty-five or twenty-six; he's doing 60-hour workweeks, he's snubbing people, not parties; he's running red lights; (* Ben attempts 'unrecall' *); Brunnhilde is cold butter in his hands. Her mouth cold when he kisses her lips and pulls her into his lap.
He'll remember cold butter, several mouths and several months from his birthday, in a long dark car in Singapore, long after the wick has died.
