Feliks Audio Euforia 20 Years Anniversary Edition - First Impressions
I’ve had the privilege of owning a headphone amplifier from the Polish company Feliks Audio. The Elise is has been a wonderful companion for several years and given me so many hours of relaxation and sound bliss.
When I first got it the bigger brother the Euforia had just been released. It was just outside my budget at the time, so I wen’t with the Elise.
Over the years I’ve of course wondered what the difference is. Now I finally know :)
Feliks Audio celebrates their 20 years anniversary by releasing a special version of their Euforia headphone amplifier. This finally made me take the leap and invest. Here is a small list of what makes this anniversary model extra special (and the Euforia is already special):
Neotech UP-OCC Single crystal signal wiring - extremely pure monocrystalic copper wire, teflon coated - able to transmit signal faster, and with less distortion than OFC or silver wires, comparing to pure silver wires (as used in "regular" Euforia) it makes the top-end of the spectrum sound richer yet less fatiguing.
Higher grade internals including ClarityCap capacitors with CopperConnect technology- for extra smoothness and clarity.
New low-noise-design power transformer - provides even better electromagnetic interference isolation.
Redesigned Constant-current source modules to give rock-solid operating conditions, regardless of the external factors.
Special finish - high gloss space grey applied using highest quality automotive painting process.
Lots of fancy words in there, but how does it translate into better sound? I’m going to give my view on what’s better (or not?) compared to the Feliks Audio Elise.
The first thing I noticed the the total “blackness” or “silence”. There is no hum what so ever. The Elise has by no measure high background hum, but the Euforia takes it to another level. It really helps to give very delicate music more feel. It’s also very pleasing for the ears to minimize unnessary sounds.
One of the things that bugged me a bit about the Elise was the “in your face” voices of the singers. I managed to in some way fix this by tube rolling. In the Euforia the voices take a step back, and not in any bad way. It’s still there with great clarity but now gives more depth. Gives me the possibility to listen to the total instead of full focus on the vocals.
When we are talking about clarity. It has very clear and detailed sound. I hear new nuances and little things I’ve not noticed in the music before. It’s so much fun listening through all music again for finding things I’ve missed :)
I’ve read many reviews saying the Euforia is more neutral than the Elise. Not really noticed it so much myself. It does feel more refined and exact. Instruments that often feels “wrong” like pianos, organs etc. just sounds more right.
This leads me to the “speed” of the Euforia. What do I mean with speed you might wonder. Well, very “hectic” and high tempo music often feel muddled. Feels like the “resolution” of the sound is not good enough. No such problem with the Euforia. A good example is Light Wave by Ralf Illenberger. I’ve never managed to understand the brilliance of this song. It just felt like a mess with blurred instruments. With the Euforia this is all gone and it’s a totally different tune. I now totally love the song and applaud it’s brilliance!
One con though is that I’m now feeling like my headphones is starting to become something that needs to be upgraded next...
I don’t know how many of these things I’ve noticed comes from this 20 years anniversary edition as opposed to the original Euforia. But I’m sure anyone would be happy with either.
This brings me to the more physicla part. It’s absolutely gorgeous in it’s laquered black finish. It feel real premium on the outside as well as on the inside. With the glowing tubes it’s something you love to show off :)
As with the Elise the Euforia is also a great tube rollers dream. It can take som many different tubes and with adapters even more types. You can change the sound signature in so many ways if your wallet can handle it. It can get expensive very quickly with some of the popular tubes.
When we are talking about expensive, the Euforia cost a bit and the 20 years anniversay edition even more so. Is it worth the money? Well that is up to each and everyone. For me it’s worth every penny. Quality costs and only the components problably counts for much of this cost.
So, is the Elise better then the Euforia in some way? For me the Elise worked better on much of the electronic music I tried. This was because the Euforia detailed all of the samples in the music. The tunes often felt disjointed because of this. Also the bass is much tighter and quicker which made some of the songs feel a bit thin. So if you listen predominantly to electronic music (think house, trance etc.) , the Elise might be a better fit.
This is not a full review, but rather a shorter first impression of this special 20 years anniversay edition of the Euforia. This is after having it for little over a week. This also means that I’ve not yet done the brake in period of 50-60 hours yet. This means it can only get better :D
In conclusion I’m more then satisfied with this lovely headphone amplifier. If you get the chance to listen to it, you should really take the chance. If you are on the lookout you need look no further. With the tube rolling possibilities you have “many” different amplifiers in one.
