Some thoughts on Ursa ans Azula

I don‘t know if this is a hot take but I personally really like the idea that Ursa never loved Azula. I think it‘s way more interesting than Ursa loving both her kids equally and Ozai just doing a better job brainwashing Azula. Because well, sometimes, for whatever reason parents -including mothers- can‘t build a connection to their kids, even when they are very little and haven‘t done anything wrong.

Which isn‘t really something that‘s talked about a lot and if it appears in fiction, pretty much only for really shitty villains. I personally like the idea that Ursa tried to connect with Azula and always made sure that she was fed and clothed and clean, but obviously tiny Azula still realized -even if it was just subconciously- that her mother didn‘t love her but loved Zuko and probally spent a lot more time and effort on Zuko. While Azula was just kind of sitting in the corner, probally mostly left to herself. Which made it a lot easier for Ozai to brainwash her. Azula had her basic physical needs met, I don‘t think Ursa would let her go hungry or something like that, but not the love and emotional attention kids really need.
