See you at Zine Pavilion! #ALAAC23
Zine Pavilion at the 2023 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
Volunteer with the Zine Pavilion at ALA Annual 2023 and receive a free pass to the conference!
The Zine Pavilion is a space on the exhibit floor at the American Library Association's annual conference to display zines, meet zine librarians, and talk about how zines and libraries are a great pair. ALA is the largest gathering of librarians in the world, with over 12,000 attendees, including librarians, archivists, writers, publishers, and guest speakers. This year's Zine Pavilion will be held in Chicago at McCormick Place Convention Center from Friday June 23 through Monday June 26.
We're looking for volunteers who love zines to help the Zine Pavilion run smoothly. This includes talking to people about zines, promoting the zine raffle, and folding and stapling zines. In exchange, we're offering a free exhibitor badge to the conference to those who volunteer for a 3-hour shift. This badge gives you access to the exhibit hall and all regular ALA sessions. (Please note that this badge does *not* include access to "ticketed events" such as pre-conferences or banquets).
We're glad to have you as part of the Zine Pavilion!

Late first lady’s foundation set to honor group run by self-declared ‘Marxist’
Tumblr media
Barbara Bush Foundation Honors American Library Association for Literacy Efforts In an announcement that drew attention, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy revealed that the American Library Association (ALA) would be one of the two recipients of the "2023 Barbara Bush National Literacy Honors Award." The award will be presented during the National Celebration of Reading, set to take place in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The ALA's recognition comes in the midst of criticism aimed at the organization, primarily due to statements made by its President, Emily Drabinski. Shortly after her election to the role, Drabinski declared herself a "Marxist lesbian" on social media. "I just cannot believe that a Marxist lesbian who believes that collective power is possible to build and can be wielded for a better world is the president-elect of @ALALibrary," Drabinski wrote in a since-deleted post. "I am so excited for what we will do together. Solidarity! And my mom is SO PROUD. I love you, mom." The ALA has also faced backlash over its promotion of "intersectionality" and various LGBT-related content aimed at children and young adults during its Annual Conference and Exhibition in June. These actions have triggered movements in several states, including Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Wyoming, to sever ties with the ALA. Texas and Montana have already succeeded in ending their associations with the organization. Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison stated, "Texas should be leading the fight against dangerous Marxist ideology – not subsidizing it with my constituents’ hard-earned tax dollars. I’ll continue fighting to protect Texans from having their money weaponized against them, their values, and their children." Montana State Library Commission justified its move by saying their "duty to the Constitution forbids association with an organization led by a Marxist." Marxism, a controversial political philosophy, has its roots in the works of German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has been associated with the rise of communist states worldwide, with an estimated 100 million deaths attributed to its ideology, according to the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, known for its mission to enhance literacy, will honor the ALA as part of their event, the National Celebration of Reading. This event will bring together members of the Bush family, bestselling authors, entertainers, and special guests to further their literacy mission. Andrew Roberts, the interim president and CEO of the organization, emphasized the transformative power of literacy, stating, "What Barbara Bush knew more than three decades ago is still true today: literacy changes lives." The award is intended to recognize exceptional contributions towards a more literate America. The foundation clarified that the award will be presented to the ALA as an organization, not to any individual. It should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any individual’s personal or political views. Alan Inouye, the ALA's interim associate executive director, will accept the award on behalf of the organization and its staff. In response, the ALA emphasized its non-partisan, non-profit status and its commitment to providing leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services, without endorsing or promoting any particular political beliefs or ideologies. While the ALA has faced criticism, the Barbara Bush Foundation's recognition of their work in promoting literacy continues to be a point of discussion, stirring the debate about the intersection of political views and professional recognition.
