Only 2 short shippy prompts all month! All 4 modern girls got a couple spotlights, various family cameos and backstories, a future prompt as is tradition, Zaine had a few posts, a few NPC-only scenes, a LOT of Endwalker, and even Ancient Icarus got a story, tying into 2021's "Destruct" prompt and how/why the siblings' souls have been connected through time and reincarnations.

A few of these are alternate takes on scenes I've touched on before, but it's interesting what a new prompt at a different time can get one to say, how we change as writers in what we focus on and how we say it.

This comes in roughly 300 words shorter than last year, at 18,493. The week of the 18-22 I had off work for my birthday, and that had the most 1k+ prompts, with a word count nearly double the other 3 full weeks. While the longer prompts are good, I'm really happy with how so many of the short ones turned out!

I was again trying to be realistic about my time, energy, not pushing free write days...and also working on an original writing project on the side, so I actually did do more writing over the month, just not FFXIV related!

(Also why some of my responses were in just under the wire...)

But this was a good break and exercise from that other writing, and let me try a few new things.

And comparing to earlier years--especially 2017 and 2018 when I was getting back onto the writing horse and feeling out my OCs--I feel like my growth as a writer, especially to be more succinct yet still evocative when needed, is evident. I've gotten a lot of practice in over time, and this challenge is one of the things that helped me get to where I can write an original story on top of my fanfic!

Breakdowns for funsies: Longest: 21 Grave; 1,652 words Shortest: 14 Clear; 106 words

Between 100-500 words: 1 Envoy; 2 Bark; 4 Off the Hook; 5 Barbarous; 7 Noisome; 8 Shed; 14 Clear; 15 Portentous; 26 Last; 27 Sole. Between 500-1000 words: 6 Ring; 11 Once Bitten, Twice Shy; 13 Check; 16 Jerk; 18 Fish Out of Water; 22 Fulsome; 23 Suit; 25 Call it a Day; 28 Blunt; 29 Contravention; 30 Amity. 1000+ words: 9 Fair; 12 Dowdy; 19 Weal; 20 Hamper; 21 Grave.

I didn't look at the totals until the end; I only checked some of the shorter ones during the challenge to see if they hit my personal "500+ words" cut off for adding a Read More to the posts.

"Grave" honestly could have been a lot shorter; I started the plot too early, and much as I like Zaine making one last visit to his childhood Nana, for the purposes of the challenge, I could have just focused on going to the lichyard to save myself time and energy, and wrote about the visit on my own another time. On the other hand, it's done now!

Not sure which is a favorite; there's a lot I like.

As usual, these will be revised at...some point (some more than others, probably) and added to Ao3, in my various series and threads.

Let’s talk another shocking HSLOT song on the European leg: STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

I legit though I was hallucinating watching the May 13th livestream from Horsens when the opening chords started. Even though he wrote this one, Harry so rarely adds 1D songs to his setlist. He played it occasionally in 2017-2018 since HS1 only had 10 tracks.

And this summer, though he sometimes alternated with Daylight, he played it consistently starting May 13th.

It’s one of his more…suggestive 1D songs, talking about how happy he is to be ensnared in the bedroom of his captor (guess who?). And as he plays it more this summer he fiddles with his Gucci ring while singing “holding your hand and talking about your eyes.” He also changes the emphasis of some lyrics right from May 13th, singing “he used to sing about being free but now he’s *changed his mind!*” The change reminded me of Blondie’s new vocal emphases in The 1 (*take her home*) and Illicit Affairs (you showed me colours you know I *can’t* see with anyone else).

Here’s an example from Frankfurt (night before SNTV was released, glimpse the purple):

And for some fun, here is the world’s most chaotic 1D promo video when FOUR was released, filmed in early November 2014. The song was a fan fave on this album. Ben Winston fights a valiant fight, but trying to keep these 5 on track is…a lot.

Timestamp 26:07-27:30 for Harry’s attempt at describing his inspiration.

Am dead. He likened her to a nymphomaniac. Bet that went over real well with all the publicists.

In other delightful highlights, Timestamp 28:35-29:05 is his familiar response to how he feels about the (alleged) songs written about him by Taylor.

And this TOTAL GEM at Timestamp 32:16-32:33.

Harry tells Ben that his fave 1D song is Got To Be You (about reuniting with a former love). They all agree it’s for personal reasons.

Then, Harry claps and says “Well done, Taylor!”

Niall chuckles and mutters “Your boyfriend’s back!”

And Liam shushes Niall, telling him “You’re going to get in trouble…”

This is an opinion piece. Many will not agree with me, so I have laid out some facts. Scooter’s wife divorces him and his biggest clients leave him by the end of 2022. As if the pandemic wasn’t hard enough, hey Scooter? Karma?

2017

-On May 21, 2017, BTS won the Billboard award for Top Social Artist, beating out Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes. Beiber and Grande at that time were both signed to Scooter Braun’s agency. Everyone took notice.

Except Justin that is, lol.

2018

-Here he is in August 26, 2018 answering fans questions about Jungkook and BTS. He had listened to one song - FIRE.

I have to sigh here, the author of this article can’t even be bothered to include each member’s name. Just a general Scooter says “they’re great”. Because he couldn’t care less? He had his wonder boy Justin, and potentially a whole new generation of talented people to work with should the need arise in the future. I believe the members of BTS individually or as a group weren’t his priority at the time. I remember that period when fans were asking if a collaboration with Justin Bieber would be possible in the future. BTS handled these questions very delicately.

Everything I have ever read about Scooter, I don’t respect him enough to write his proper name, is that he puts himself first. Previous clients do not speak highly of his management. Taylor Swift for example.

Interesting fact, Taylor Swift, Halsey (Boy with Luv collaboration with BTS) and Camilla Cabello (Shawn Mendes is her ex) gave a great performance of “Shake it off” at the American Music Awards in Nov 2019.

Perhaps when Justin’s health issues became too grave to hide from the public or Justin himself refused to be held to his contract, (and perhaps Justin sold his catalog to cover his costs/penalties of canceling his tour) Scooter had an empty sandbox with no one to play with.

And, having lost his main source of income and having a keen head for business, (vulture capitalist) he had already set his sights on a new revenue stream. Of the seven BTS members, one in particular had released songs by Justin Bieber, proving he had what it took to be successful in the western market.

Jungkook has been a Bieber fan since he debuted with BTS. He ticks all the boxes needed for the western market, doesn’t he? Masculine build, tattoos, piercings, outstanding vocal ability and dance skills/technique and is a member of the greatest musical group in history?

No wonder Scooter went to the White House with BTS. Had to be sure to be there at the Grammys too. Front and center as though he was responsible for their success.

Well thank goodness for BTS. In 2022, their PTD tour earned:

Someone had to keep the lights on in that new building and families of the employees fed.

Which brings us back to Jeon Jungkook, Bieber admirer, a man who most definitely fits the “western audience appeal”, possessing talent beyond what we in the west have seen in many years.

And then there’s his equally talented, gifted dancer “Bro” Jimin who broke all the records right before him but does not bow down to those who whisper behind his back, lol.

And by coincidence, their music videos, promotional materials for their solo albums and many of their conversations seem to hinting at something 😉

Oh Scooter, it isn’t fun when someone beats you at your own game, is it?

When in doubt as to what is going on in an organization, follow the $$$.

I firmly believe the budget allowed for BTS’s chapter 2 “solo period” was capped due HYBE’s financial acquisitions at the same time.

I commend the effort you've put into this ask and I can tell you're trying to build a case for your theory(-ies), but I'm not sure what exactly that theory is.

Is it that Scooter is broke and HYBE shifted financial resources from BTS to support him and their SM acquisition? Didn't HYBE tap capital markets precisely to raise proceeds for that purpose though? Or is it that Scooter is looking for a windfall in BTS now that his old roster of artists have abandoned ship?

But then, what is the implication here?

You've already put quite some effort into building out this timeline so I hate to ask you to do more work, but I'm afraid the dots aren't quite connecting for me just yet. If you'd like to send me a follow up ask succinctly explaining what you mean, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, all I can say is this looks like a variation of the same fan theories I've seen people come up with to explain Jimin's solo rollout relative to Jungkook's. The fact there's so much discourse around it indicates something else to me, but I'll let the dead horse be.

Best of 2023 - Movies

Seems like I did run into more than one almost perfect movie this year, but the number one, definitely one of the most brilliant film I ever watched. And no, it's not the new Basic Instinct but I can see a little bit of resemblance.

01. Anatomy of a Fall - Dir: Justine Triet - 2023 - "Marriage, the film suggests, is like a mosaic. One or two highly coloured tiles might catch the eye but they can’t, on their own, show the whole picture. The reports we get of Sandra and Samuel’s life together (there is only one flashback in the film; most of what we learn comes from the evidence presented in the court) suggest a relationship that gets chillier and spikier by the minute. But then the prosecution’s case relies on cherrypicking the trauma and the deep-seated unhappiness in the marriage, and foregrounding the character traits in Sandra that might make her capable of murder. A choice of other, sunnier moments, as Sandra reasonably points out, would paint an entirely different picture of her relationship with her husband." - The Guardian

28. Anaïs in Love - Dir: Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet - 2021 - "The pleasures of Anaïs in Love largely derive from the nuanced performances by Demoustier and Bruni Tedeschi. The latter, for once, is not required to be tearful or neurotic, and the growing attraction between her and Anaïs is convincingly handled – even if one could quibble at a couple of cliché moments, such as the two women’s encounter under an apple tree (in which Anaïs gives Émilie an apple) and the nowadays seemingly obligatory sea-shore setting for the lesbian love scene. The excellent Demoustier sustains the entire film, indeed named after her. Her choice was not accidental: Bourgeois-Tacquet had already cast her as the lead in her 2018 short Pauline asservie. (Both the short and Anaïs in Love were shown at Cannes in 2021 – quite an accolade.) Ebullient and ‘cute’ especially when seducing Daniel or Émilie, Demoustier is equally believable as an aggrieved daughter when she finds out that her mother’s lethal illness has returned. Her irrepressible energy and artless beauty underline her precise rendition of a modern young woman bent on following her own desire, straight or queer – at times to the point of insensitivity. Indeed, it’s hard to think of another actress who could have made Anais’s exasperating unreliability, egocentricity and excessive volubility forgivable, let alone endearing, as they are evidently supposed to be. Fans of Eric Rohmer may be reminded of some of the young heroines in his ‘Comedies and Proverbs’ (1980–1990) and ‘Tales of the Four Seasons’ (1990 – 1998) series, a filmic heritage also suggested by the literary references and cultured dialogue. This is marivaudage with an intellectual bent – Anaïs and Émilie share a love of Duras’s 1964 novel The Ravishing of Lol Stein – and a feminist twist: “I don’t want to meet interesting people,” Anaïs says, “I want to be interesting.” Thanks in large part to Demoustier, she is." - British Film Institute

Robbery, Murder as Dangerous Act, Arson

A Napels, Florida, man was convicted of fatally shooting two brothers and burning their bodies in a car.

Zachary Anderson was convicted of two second-degree murder charges in the January, 2017 deaths of brothers Christopher Patrick Hunter, 36, and Thomas Anthony Hunter, 41, both of 13th Street NW, Golden Gate Estates.

A dispute related to a drug deal allegedly led Anderson to shoot both men while they were inside a 2002 silver Mercury Mountaineer, dousing the car with gasoline and lighting it ablaze, Collier County Sheriff’s detectives said.

Anderson also faces charges of attempted purchase of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm, ammunition or concealed weapon by a convicted felon, and shooting at or into a occupied.

Part 1.

2014, Sochi Olympics, men single skating, short program. Evgeni Plushenko, because of an sudden accident, withdraws from the competition…. I was watching the competition on site and I wanted to talk to somebody, who I could share all those feelings that I had in me with, so I was wandering around Rostelecom Square alone. The start of everything was the moment when I got a call from a certain producer asking me if there is a show that I'd like to do and if there is, that we should do it together, and on the spot I announced that I'd like to do a figure skating show.

Before then, every time I told somebody that I'd like to do an anime about figure skating, the response that I've got was something like: "Sounds difficult to do, doesn't it?", "Something about school clubs?"… I personally wanted to animate competitions, because I watch competitions and I find them interesting, but I was not understood. At the same time, I was confident that I was trying to create something new that nobody could even visualize. The projects that are easily understood and easily praised with "Sounds interesting!"s, usually are projects that you have already seen somewhere before.

[Notes: This is another version of the same interview, this time from DVD vol. 6 booklet! It has been edited, but most of the text is word for word the same as Sayo's Febri interview.

It's really fascinating for me, how unwilling she was to talk about the show (even after it ended - this DVD went on sale 2017/05/26)... The only interview, where she explained some plot points was her Esu interview. I'm sure many people have noticed how little additional info the creators have ever given away...

Just my personal opinion, but seeing how Mitsurou, who was given the role of a spokesperson, had to diminish the relationship between Y&V a few times, and because of that appeared insincere (You know, drew two men exchanging rings in front of a church -> oh, but it's not about marriage, they are more like clubmates. In Jp fandom, this type of insincerity was bashed even by anti-"fujo-pandering" fans, like: "if you say this now, then why do you even include scenes like that in the first place...?"), I have always been under the impression that Sayo just chose to not talk at all.]
