481-482: “Ace Rescued! Whitebeard's Final Order!” and “The Power That Can Burn Even Fire! Akainu's Ruthless Pursuit”

Ace, I know why you did it but I am sad.

For you, for Luffy, for Whitebeard and everyone who risked their lives to save you. Your pride and loyalty - two of your biggest strengths - were used against you by a slick, clever liar who knew exactly how to take advantage. That is exactly how you got into this situation. Your pride forced you to chase Blackbeard. Now it forced you to square up to Akainu who has a more powerful version of your fruit.

I don’t think Ace is dead (because he’s a logia fruit user and a fist through the chest is a big deal but nothing insurmountable). I won’t believe it, anyway, until I see a body and that vivre card is cinders and ashes.

And Whitebeard, ugh. Oda shows no mercy when he wants to elicit emotion, does he? Goes straight for the jugular. ;_;

Ace and Luffy

It started so well. The morale boost when Ace, Luffy and Mr 3 appeared and the cheers that went up made me grin. (I may also have clapped but I don’t want to admit it.)

It was great seeing them fight seriously together for the first time. Ace’s fruit powers really are awesome, in the old sense of the word, and flashy too. Buggy would love them (remember when they partied together on Buggy’s ship? Ah... memories). I still think Ace’s Firefly has a grace and beauty about it you won’t expect from a rugged, piratical user. Maybe it reflects his inner personality. Ace is a good guy. Even though Luffy has Gear 3rd now, I still think 2nd is the most effective move-set. It gives him speed and power.

What I liked best about this scene was Ace’s happiness and pride at discovering how far Luffy had come. Unlike other shounen characters (like, say, Bakugou from BnHA, Sasuke from Naruto, or Vegeta from DB) being saved is not a stain on his pride. He was happy Luffy rescued him and commended him on how strong he had become. "Never thought I'd be saved by you one day. Thanks, Luffy. You got stronger!" He gives his little brother the credit for his hard word and bloody-minded determination.

Likewise, Luffy also gives credit where it’s due. He laughed and said, "Whitebeard and the others helped me do it." He recognised the sacrifices everyone made to help him achieve his goal. Hopefully, he’ll be able to pay them back one day. I’m sure he will. :)

There was still brotherly banter, though. Old habits die hard. “I’ll become stronger than you, one day!” Ace did not ridicule Luffy or say, “Yeah, sure. Doubt it but good luck.” When Aokiji jumped in, he knew Luffy wasn’t ready to face him yet but was tactful about Luffy’s pride. “Then let me protect you for now.”

For now. Does Ace acknowledge that one day Luffy might make good on that promise?

Whatever the case, Ace’s clash with Aokiji was great to watch. Was it the prime example of a bad match up (Ace’s fire melted Aokiji’s ice) or is Ace on Aokiji’s level, generally? I cannot decide. Kizaru didn’t step up, so I can’t say either way if he would be a bad match up for Ace. Akainu, who eventually did, was like, “NOPE. AN ESCAPE? NOT HAPPENING. STEP ASIDE, SOLDIERS.”

Then Squard turned up, powering the Moby Dick v.2 across the ice like a tank, ready to use it as a bomb that would blow up himself, his crew and Marineford, so the others could take Ace and go. His crew sure are loyal, willing to die for his mistake. Not sure I agree with that, but hell, it’s their choice.

Ugh, Whitebeard. You keep dragging everyone’s heart through the wringer. I am now convinced you have a second fruit power that involves tugging on heart strings. Even while dying (and I am now reconvinced he will sacrifice himself to help Luffy and Ace escape) he still looks out for his sons. Oda must like him because he gives him such powerful, meaningful lines.

"Can't you understand how ungrateful it is for a child to die before his parent, Squard? That little stab wound didn't affect my lifespan. Now, listen all you Whitebeard pirates. I'm gonna give you an order for the last time! You and I will part ways here. Everyone, survive and get to the New World at any cost! I am a remnant from the old times. There is no ship that can bear me into the New Era. Don’t look back. Because the era is changing.”

This got me for a couple of reasons. If you’ve ever talked to old people (like family or friends you get on with), sometimes they begin to say stuff like that near the end of their lives. You don’t want them to say it because it’s acknowledging something you don’t want to happen but you know it will, anyway. And also the notion of obsolescence. I hate it when older people think of themselves as obsolete, as no longer worth anything as the world changes about them. No. You can learn new things. You are worth something. Even if you can’t get out of the house anymore, you can learn to work a tablet and brighten up someone’s life by joining an online community. Like Whitebeard says, you don’t have to be related to be family.

Sorry for the tangent, but that just gets to me.

On a happier note, Oda let us see a young Whitebeard before he was Whitebeard. His design looks familiar. Like he wouldn’t be out of place in an 80s hair metal band.

Don’t Look Back

The rest, with difficulty, obeyed Whitebeard’s orders and began the evacuation.

Ace, however, with his big heart and undying loyalty, just stood there. Luffy tried to tell him, “The old man has made up his mind!” but Ace said, “I know. And it won’t be in vain!” I really hope not.

Then Ace ran to Whitebeard and bowed before him, head touching the floor, to show how grateful he was for everything Whitebeard had given him: family, freedom, and, in the words of Dr Hiluluk, a wonderful life.

“We don’t need words now,” Whitebeard said (and at that point someone was cutting onions, I swear). “But just tell me one thing... are you happy to have me as your father?”

“Of course I am!” Ace shouted.

I still don’t know whether Whitebeard was laughing or crying at Ace’s answer, but I don’t need to know. For better or worse, they are father and son. Ace turned and ran with Luffy, protected by Jimbei who correctly interpreted Whitebeard’s order as: he wants as many survivors as possible. Let’s gtfo out of here now.

Sengoku seems to think Whitebeard intends to do what Squard threatened. To sink Marineford into the sea, sacrificing himself in the process. Garp seems to think along the same lines, but also noticing that Whitebeard wants to change the Era, believing that, yes, it is the right time. I love how Whitebeard is so strong that he dictates when the Era changes.

I suppose he’s leaving it up to the rest to shape the New Era.

BUT AKAINU...

If I thought Kizaru was an accomplished shit-talker, Akainu takes it to the next level. At first, I thought the guy was a just a raging meat-head. Could not have been more wrong. This guy is a Class A Manipulator. He knows just what to say to get under someone’s skin, then take advantage. He did it with Squard and that’s why I’m sad that Ace fell for his lies. But again, I know why Ace did it. Because he has a big heart and is loyal to a fault.

“As soon as you rescue Fire Fist Ace, you cut and run. The Whitebeard pirates must be cowards. Whitebeard is just a loser from the old times. Gol D. Roger conquered the world and ushered in a new Era by sacrificing himself (exactly like WB, now I think of it). But Roger was true to his name as the Pirate King. What has Whitebeard done? He was satisfied by being a big fish in a little, family barrel. Some fools say his name is keeping peace on various islands (uh oh, I smell trouble future). But if you ask me, he’s keeping lightweights in fear of him. Even after Roger’s death, he could never become the Pirate King. He’s a poor man, when you think of it: roamed the sea with his fake family, couldn’t become king, gained nothing and was stabbed by a fool who fell for my line. I don’t care if the others get away, as long as I get you two. So I’ll kill him [Luffy] and make you watch!”

Ace, you shouldn’t have looked back. Whitebeard told you. It’s like that tale of Orpheus and Eurydice: you look back and... doom. You looked back, took the bait and now a guy with a stronger devil fruit has punched you through the chest and your little brother is in danger.

I’m loving the twists and turns but this something else... ;_;

Every single time I see this attack, the 80s-tastic song gets stuck in my head and I will now forever associate it with Ace.

As the old saying goes, the best time to post a year in review is halfway through February! All the books, and this time video games and films, I enjoyed in 2021.

Books

1) Assassins Quest, Robin Hobb – The last of the farseer trilogy, I liked this one more than I remember actually. It’s slightly frustrating in the way a lot of the series is, with a realistic depiction where people will learn big important lessons but then relapse into bad habits and have to relearn the same lessons. It also spends the first 3rd or so on an assassination mission you know can’t work, as it’s the first 3rd of the book so of course he won’t kill the big bad, and finally after spending two books in a very well-developed location, this one is spent on the road away from 90% of the cast. However, rereading let me focus less on the destination and more on the journey, which made it a really enjoyable book, and made the detours into features rather than bugs. The ending is still a little disappointing, with everything getting wrapped up very quickly, and the black magic viking raids that were the primary threat get wrapped up in all of half a sentence, but as I understand it the later books go more into this, so I can live with it.

2) How to Rule an Empire and Get Away With It, KJ Parker – As always, adored and devoured this KJ Parker. Admittedly, it’s nothing new compared to his past work – a morally grey conman keeps a million plates spinning at once, but I don’t mind his books being samey when those balancing plates are politics, history, warfare, and a million niche interests that are clearly beautifully researched.

3) Mad Ship, Robin Hobb – The Second of the Liveship Traders series. There’s an interesting contrast between the farseer and liveship books, where farseer are somewhat conventional single protagonist in a western European medieval fantasy setting, while liveship is a whole number of narrators with much more focus on women, non-combat sides of life like trade and diplomacy, and is set in a golden age of piracy new world type setting. All of which makes me feel bad that I devour farseer books like they’re hot cakes, but take a while to get through the liveship books. I think it might just be there’s so much to unpack, but they’re also slightly tricky subject matter, with a whole lot of body horror, misery, and rape. This book was possibly my favourite of the trilogy (I read the first years ago), with the focus on the rising tension in a colony against the large but calcified empire that taxes them and ignores their ancient rights… it’s the American revolution, but also dragons are returning to the world. It’s pretty solid.

4) Battle of Lewes and Evesham, Richard Brooks – If you’re UK based, you’ve probably seen these books in Waterstones, they’re big square books which go into super detail on one very specific historical topic. This one is local to me, and involves Henry III – the one medieval English King I just cannot get any memory to stick in my head about, no matter how many times I read his wiki page. Now he’s cemented as basically King John mark 2, but a bit luckier. This book reminded me a lot of the “Very Short Introduction to” where it’s not quite certain if it wants to be an easily accessible primer for lay-people, or an academic work arguing an in-depth point. This is the former for the first half, then gets into a very in-depth discussion about the exact starting location of the battle of Lewes which feels like walking into a long-standing argument you know nothing about. Beautiful art throughout though, excellent accurate depictions of this eras Knights and armies, and nice seeing so much discussion of the Sussex Downs I know so well.

5) Slaughterhouse 5, Kurt Vonnegut, Ryan North, Albert Monteys – A really fantastic comic adaptation that suits the original novel an incredible amount, it feels like it was always intended to be read this way. I enjoyed Slaughterhouse 5 a lot, although I couldn’t help comparing it to Catch-22 which despite being written ten years prior, in a lot of ways feels like a more modern book than Slaughterhouse. That said, I read Catch in a beautiful summer in my teens when I had just passed some exams and was in probably the happiest reading summer of my life, while Slaughterhouse I read on a drizzly afternoon in February while feeling a bit depressed, so I will definitely come back to it at a later date, it definitely felt like it could stand up to multiple re-reads. It’s also an interesting one reading the reviews – every review prior to around ~2000 seemed to approach it with what I think is the correct reading: the Tralfmadorians are intentionally ridiculous, and Vonnegut is critical of the deterministic fatalistic viewpoint he’s presenting. Billy Pilgrim is sympathetic but ultimately frustrating and wrong, and is clearly drawing from the pulpy shlock he loves to create a world in which his passivity is heroic instead of pathetic, and also where he has endless sex with a porn star. However, every recent review I’ve seen I think has been affected by modern “geek culture” and takes the book at very face value. It’s generally a good thing, but I think we’ve been over-conditioned to take everything very seriously and never look at a race of aliens described as toilet plungers and just come out and say “they are ridiculous”.

6) Ship of Destiny, Robin Hobb – the last of the liveship traders books. This is an odd one, as there are a number of plot threads in this series, and one of them – bringing dragons back to life – is resolved very early in this one, so all the other plots feel like it’s just a matter of time til the dragon can sort it out. This makes it all feel quite nice and positive, but also deflates the drama a bit. It also contributes to my least favourite part of the book, which is one of the female protagonists being raped. Rape has been a major recurring threat in this series, and it often feels like there’s an unpleasant hint of… punitive-ness to it, like the characters have brought in on themselves by trying to be women in male spaces? That’s a horrible idea and I don’t want to say it’s the authors intent or anything, but it definitely left a sour taste, especially with this sense from the other plotline that everything had kind of been resolved and just needed wrapping up. Feels weird going from depressing talk about sexual assault to dragon personalities, but here we are – I think as much as I love fantasy, I’ll always find full on high fantasy talking dragons a tiny bit silly, and GRRM has set the bar insanely high for writing dragons, but this is probably the best rendition of sapient dragons I’ve seen – they have a real sense of a completely different type of mind and thought patterns, where you can reason with them, but to a point they’ll see you as a particularly chatty ant, so find it hard to take any deal with humans seriously. It’s a very good job of showing an entirely different type of sentient being.

7) Sunne in Splendor, Sharon Penman – a historical novel about the war of the roses from Richard III’s perspective. As with all Penman’s books, absolutely fantastic, with a real balance of page-turner accessibility with ‘real literature’ rewardingness, but also a HEFTY book. It’s weird reading fast and still taking a month plus to finish a book. It paired well with my other war of the roses novels, the quadrilogy by Conn Iggulden, as that focused on the Lancasters and the start of the war, while this was the Yorks and was more about the years after Edward took the throne. It’s a well-written tragedy when I get to Bosworth and am hoping against hope that somehow Richard III will survive.

8) Clariel, Garth Nix – The Old Kingdom books were my big (re)discovery of last year, so I was really glad to see the series has continued since. This one’s a prequel, which I’m always pretty wary of, but it actually works really well. I’ve always felt that structurally, if not in execution, the star wars prequels had the right idea – a tragic fall to lead into the heroic rise of the original work. This follows a similar path (even focusing on a hero who we only know in the original as a terrifying villain behind a mask), and expands the world a lot from the original trilogy. This might be me projecting a bit, but it also seems to deconstruct a lot of the more traditional fantasy elements from the originals – here we see that the “special chosen one royal family with special magical blood” are fairly useless outside of the specific magical apocalypses, which are thousands of years apart. I would say it’s problematic that this is presented as a bit of a decadent fallen world and the common-born semi democratic leader seeking to replace the royals is the villain, but this is the advantage of having a main character whose arc is a fall to evil – the antagonist may not have actually been especially evil, he was just in the way of our protagonist. It’s also a book with an Asexual protagonist which is handled really well, especially for a book which is I wanna say 10+ years old. I suppose the only thing missing is that the earlier books were based around the idea of “20th century Britain shares a border with a fantasy world” and this one stays carefully away from that border, but with it being 500 years prior I suppose the conceit wouldn’t work.

9) Superman: American Alien, Max Landis – This one is really hurt by Landis turning out to be a real life terrible person. The whole theme is “perfect paragon superman” being a more down to earth flawed character, but a lot of those flaws are less charming knowing what the writer may be projecting. That said, this is still a fantastic collection of really slick approachable superman stories that leave you feeling like you’ve read a whole decades worth of stories distilled into highlights. It leaves you satisfied but also wanting more, although apparently he had a planned sequel which was a bit “goddamn batman”, so maybe a valuable lesson in being short and sweet. And yes, this is the one that was all over tumblr with “ta-da, sard borken”.

10) To Hold the Bridge, Garth Nix – Talking of short but sweet, this is a short story set around the time of Clariel. It also does a good job of punching above it’s weight, it feels like it could be the introductory act of a full novel, but also is a very satisfying story in itself. One of the few things Clariel was missing was the undead aspect, but this one more than makes up for it with some of the creepiest dead rising moments in the whole series. Completely unrelated to the story itself, I read the whole thing while my fiancé fell asleep playing paper mario and it provided surprisingly fitting background music.

11-16) Scott Pilgrim 1-6, Bryan Lee O’Malley. This was right when I was coming to the end of my time off work and having to go back, and Scott Pilgrim was a big regression to slacker youth escapism, which honestly helped. There’s a real revelling in the joy of being young, and having not much going on beyond the latest band and hanging out with your friends.

17) War of the Worlds, HG Wells – This was me slightly forcing myself to try a “classic”, and being VERY glad I did. This was an incredible read (or listen in this case, audiobook), surprisingly fast paced and fun. There’s a real sense of simmering resentment for the whole suburban sprawl south of London which is very funny, there’s that very Victorian thing where anyone intellectual seems to just be sort of generically aristocratic and anyone working class is portrayed as a whole other species. It was also a surprise how little imperialism came across as a theme, it’s the one everyone refers to and there’s the obvious “Victorian England suddenly encounters a technologically superior conqueror stripping their resources only defeated by local diseases”, but the book only really brings those ideas up a handful of times – the theme for 90% is more focused on nature, with humans as animals and the martians as the destruction of natural environments, and sure enough Wells was an early conservationist.

18) Nightflyers, George RR Martin – ASOIAF is my favourite series of all time, and the only other GRRM book I’ve read is Fever Dream which is also fantastic, so I thought I’d check out more of his work and… they can’t all be winners. This was an absolutely, emphatically, ehh book. Nothing terrible, but just perfectly adequate. It’s a slasher movie where no one gets killed for like 70%, then everyone gets killed in the same way in the same scene. It’s also incredibly clearly just “2001 mixed with Alien”. It’s kind of inspiring in the same way that seeing a fantastic band is enjoyable but inaccessible, but seeing a crappy garage band makes you go “oh I could do this”, with the added facet of knowing the crappy garage band grows up to be… Mozart? I can’t do metaphors.

19) Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain – Similar to War of the Worlds, this classic was absolutely enjoyable, accessible, and one of the most fun reads of the year. Almost as though classics become classics for a reason! It feels a bit pointless saying anything like “this was a clever satire examining the American nation” because what hasn’t been said already? So a couple of stray thoughts – I adored the sequence when creepy hucksters they meet get into a competition, one says he’s a long lost earl and the other sulks terribly until he suddenly remembers he’s actually the true king of France. The book did have a couple of points where you could feel the style shift dramatically and pretty invariably you’d look it up and find Mark Twain had quit the book for two years then come back due to being broke as hell, this was pretty fun but there was a dramatic shift from beautifully rising tension through the book to the bit where Jim shows up and it feels like an entirely different novel, and I wish I could’ve read the end of that promised dark menacing journey into the darkness at the end of the Mississippi. That said, I adored Jim’s forcing of adventure tropes.

20) Franny and Zooey, JD Salinger – I joined a book club! This was the first book, which concerned me as I HATED Catcher in the Rye and no one wants to be the guy who immediately shits on the book clubs choices. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, it feels like a more mature response to Catcher – there’s the “I’m an intellectual, everyone else is a shallow phony”, and then there’s “okay, where do I go from there? How do I live a meaningful life if I feel detached from 99% of the world?” It also has a great sense of place and some beautiful imagery.

21-25) Beserk Volumes 1-5, Kentaro Miura – I checked this series out after Miura’s death, and I’m always a sucker for anything with lots of beautiful art of Knights in armour. I absolutely devoured the series up until shortly after the eclipse, which is basically the red wedding of the series. Unfortunately it had a slightly weird structure, where issues like 1-10 are in media res, then issues 10 to about 150 are all flashbacks, with the eclipse ending the flashbacks. This means all of the world building and characterisation happens in flashback, then suddenly you get back to the present day and there’s no characters, no setting, back to just generic monster of the week. From what I’ve heard it all carries on and there’s good shit again, but god the momentum was just lost for me.

26) The Castle, Kafka - …And the book club collapsed. Admittedly we’re all doctors with busy schedules, but I feel pretty safe in saying this book killed it. Appropriately enough, it’s a book about trudging hopelessly through the snow with a vague hope somewhere on the horizon. It’s weird, I read Metamorphosis as a kid and loved it, so it’s not just not getting on with Kafka. In this book it doesn’t feel like a sane man in a Kafkaesque world, the main character feels just as bureaucratic and obstructive as the setting. I had a brief flare of hope when I found out there’s a new translation that makes it more accessible and less archaic, but it turns out the drama around different translations was more interesting to read than either translation.

27) King Hereafter, Dorothy Dunnett

I honestly feel like Dorothy Dunnett is a Berenstain Bears thing where seemingly only I have access to an alternate universe where this incredible author writes the most intelligent, witty, interesting historical novels, as that’s the only way I can explain her not being one of the best-known authors of the 20th century. It feels like if no one else had heard of Margaret Atwood. She does have a whole society dedicated to her, and map books and all the paraphernalia of a best-seller, but you never see her talked about. This might be an elaborate way of saying great authors don’t translate into pop culture. Anyway, this is a big historical epic about the real-life King Macbeth. It presupposes that Macbeth and Thorfinn of Orkney were the same person, which I think was a theory going around for a while based on the solid Clark Kent logic of “no one ever saw them in the same historical document at the same time”. It’s beautifully written, meticulously researched. It’s a little hard to follow at first (and to follow closely throughout), but there’s romance and action aplenty. On a scale of historical complexity regarding the end of Anglo Saxon Britain, this is the EXACT opposite of all the “the Anglo Saxons danced around the maypole until mean old Normans came over and introduced politics and war”. This shows a complicated, interconnected world, where political machinations in Scotland ripple out to Rome and back.

28) Leviathan Rises, James SA Corey

I was hella depressed in my Obs and Gynae rotation and very consciously went for the Expanse as a big meaty series I could sink my teeth into for a while and lose myself in a bit. It delivered, and then some. I think I’m the millionth person to make the observation it’s essentially ASOIAF as sci-fi – starts very grounded with a large number of POV characters, with the genre fiction elements being introduced gradually to see the effect they have on a well-developed world. The first one had some major strengths – the freshness of a new setting, a very clear structure; and a few weaknesses – only two POVs, both of whom are middle aged white men, it started with some really powerful horror but later on felt like it sort of dropped that element and while there was body horror, it felt a bit desultory. The main villain was also incredibly tacked on, it felt like halfway through a chapter they decided there had to be an evil mastermind and so they left him much more tell than show – he’s a sleazy politician, he’s an immoral scientist, he’s a bit of everything. That all feels pretty negative though, don’t get me wrong that I loved this book.

29) Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir

There’s really no point to review this one beyond the “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space”. Essentially And Then There Were None in a warhammer 40K setting, it’s witty, it’s fun, it’s great. I’m also really delighted by the fact these books seem very successful, as they are, to use the technical term, really fucking weird. They never sit you down and explain the setting, or the magic system, or anything really, but they expect you to keep up and clearly people are able to. It’s also full of tumblr memes, which very easily could have been painful but was pretty enjoyable.

30) Caliban’s War, James SA Corey

The second expanse novel, they start strong and keep getting stronger. This one introduces more POVs, and more diverse ones too which is definitely to its strength. It fleshes out the political setting a lot more, and ups the action. It still suffers a bit from slightly flat villains, although the ideas it lays of military men being desperate to make the conflict make sense to them even if it means provoking a war is a well they go back later with a lot of success. It does feel like a bit of a rehash of the first one at times, with the same “mars and earth provoked into war by evil businessman” plot. There’s also a hard to pin down element to these books where, for lack a better way of saying it, you’re very aware while reading that the author(s) of this book are definitely active on reddit. Not in a bad way necessarily, just… a distinctive moral system clearly underpinning their worldview – questions of whether information should be free, an almost fetishization of good ol’ manly men from free Montana farms, and specifically in this one, a divorced single father who gets accused of being a paedophile and hung out to dry by his awful ex-wife, but ends up being proven right and getting rich. I guess with Harrow being the most Tumblr book I’ve ever read, it was more noticeable that this was pretty Reddit.

31) Providence, Alan Moore

A historical graphic novel following a narrator travelling early 20th century New England, bringing all of HP Lovecraft’s stories together. This is a book I really wanted to love, and had a lot of really great stuff that stayed with me, but ultimately it kind of left me cold. It had some great ideas, like comparing the underworld of Lovecraftian beings to the underworld of queer culture in early 20th century America, but it doesn’t always bring those ideas home – the Lovecraftian beings are all still evil and destroying the world, so best-case scenario the analogy doesn’t track, worst-case it feels pretty unpleasant. There’s also a structure where at the end of each issue you get the narrators journal, which most of the time is just reading in prose the same story you just read in comic, but occasionally with important additional information, so it sort of just kills the pacing. A big factor is that I just wasn’t the right audience – I’m only passingly familiar with Lovecraft, so I was having to look up the references regularly, and Lovecraft is only as popular as he is due to his prose, so reading Wikipedia summaries often make his stories sound ridiculous. Talking of which, I think it’s an understated fact that for every Lovecraft story about unknowable entities and Old Gods from beyond the veil of time, there are about 10 stories about “what if there was a fucked up evil wizard?”. Finally, the story ends with an admittedly very powerful Alan Moore montage of Lovecraft’s legacy growing out of control, by far and away the best part of the book, but then a final issue which is a sequel to earlier Alan Moore stories I haven’t read, and is just quite viscerally unpleasant.

32) Abaddon’s Gate, James SA Corey

As I haven’t mentioned it yet – the Expanse novels have FANTASTIC titles. I love them so much. This one has slightly less interesting POVs than the second, but the overall plot gets a lot stronger. This is also the first book to have compelling villains, with well-intentioned people following heroic urges to sacrifice their own lives for the greater good being the antagonists, against the harder and less obviously virtuous option of going about the hard unglamorous business of surviving and rebuilding society.

33) Assorted Elder Scrolls books

Basically, all the books from the elder scrolls games as printed world books. I think I was very into Skyrim at this point. Unfortunately I got the “Tales of Tamriel” books instead of “Skyrim Library” at first, it turns out the former were released to tie into TES online, which was very specifically set before any of the interesting lore of TES setting, meaning these books are all the very vague stuff before any interesting history happens.

34) American Gods, Neil Gaiman

One of my all-time favourite novels, this must be my 4th or 5th reread. This time around I really enjoyed the Midwestern small town parts of the book, Shadow starting a new life, the satisfaction of settling into a well-established community. My other big takeaway on this reread was how horny on main this book is. I think with Neil Gaiman being the sweet Tumblr grandpa figure we all know and love, it becomes weirder to see all the sexual stuff. That or I last read this book in my early twenties and pointing out horniness was like telling a fish it was a particularly wet day.

35) Cibola Burn, James SA Corey

This felt like the crossing point where the series really became sci-fi, with colonisation of alien planets. I was a bit worried at first it might be a step too far for me, but the authors know what they’re doing and ease you along gradually, and it ended up being my favourite of the series so far. I think the only real flaw of this one was that it had a very understandable conflict with a pretty likeable and understandable villain, but about a third of the way through the book one of the characters gives the standard “I know your sort, you went into authority because you like doing violence, a killer recognises a killer” speech, and from there I was looking at the character as an inevitable villain, and without that scene I think there would have been a much more compelling “the bad-ass turns out to be the villain as everyone else learns to compromise”

36) The Creature in the Case, Garth Nix

As I said, Garth Nix has been a rediscovery of a childhood favourite and continues to be an absolute gold mine. Where Clariel did away with the 20th Century England half of the story and focused on the fantasy setting, this one is set entirely in the 20th Century England-analogue, with an Agatha Christie style murder mystery in a stately house, with the mystery being the fantasy elements intruding. It’s a great fun short story, and as someone who was more into the fantasy elements and characters, I wasn’t sure I’d love this one, but I really really did.

37) Goldenhand, Garth Nix

This one is a full-length novel, a sequel to the original trilogy. I made the Star Wars comparison with Clariel as a prequel about a tragic downfall, and I think Star Wars, and all the other 80’s reboots, could have taken notes from Nix on how to do a distant sequel that doesn’t undercut your original series. This one does a perfect job of balancing the stakes, so the story feels compelling, but without undoing the happy ending of the original series. This feels like an enjoyable chance to just spend more time in this setting and with these characters, and honestly Nix could release a 9 book series about these characters filing taxes and I’d read the hell out of it.

38) The Rabbi, Nate Currier

A book by my uni friend about two old women, one blind, in Biblical era Damascus, setting off on a pilgrimage to be healed by the latest Messiah. Elements of Picaresque adventure, plus some weighty stuff about religion, disability, femininity etc. There’s also a scene with two elderly people finding love, and him putting sand on the blind lady’s hand and pressing points on her palm to “show” her the stars and it’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever read.

39) Eragon, Christopher Paolini

Sometimes you just need a simple farmboy to discover a hidden magical power and go on a quest to defeat the evil empire with a wise old mentor and rescue a princess and join the rebellion, okay? I wasn’t expecting this to hold up that well, it has pretty vocal critics and I loved it as a 10-year-old who knew almost no other fantasy… but honestly, it’s fine. It doesn’t set out to tear up any foundations, it tells a straightforward fantasy story (THE straightforward fantasy story) and does so perfectly well. This was an audiobook and the author decided to voice the telepathic dialogue from the dragon character not as whispery and refined, the way I’d imagine it, but as a growly cookie monster voice and that did nearly make me give up.

40) Klaus, Grant Morrison

I presumably have written about this one in every year’s book round-up, as it’s part of my Christmas tradition to read this every Christmas eve. By all rights, “gritty Batman Begins-style origin story for Santa” should be the worst thing in the world, but if anyone can make it work, it’s Grant Morrison. The man doesn’t have an ounce of ironic detachment in his body. Maybe one day I’ll see sexy muscular Nordic Santa riding a wolf and using a greatsword to hack of Krampus’ head while shouting “there are no bad children” and not feel overwhelmed by Christmas spirit, but 2021 wasn’t the year.

41) Brothers of the Wind, Tad Williams

Tad Williams’ stuff tends to be a “if you like ASOIAF you’ll like this”, and it’s hard not to compare to GRRM that when Williams’ epic fantasy series was delayed by 1 (ONE) year, he released a prequel short story by way of apology. As with all Williams’ fantasy stuff, it’s an excellent read, feeling very lyrical and beautiful in a way most fantasy strives for but usually falls short. The series does seem to be veering towards the elf-analogues, who are never my favourite part of fantasy, but Williams definitely has some excellent ideas he’s exploring. This one in particular has a very mythical vibe, it feels like the sort of story they allude to in the background of Lord of the Rings.

Games

1) Luigi’s Mansion 3 – I enjoyed this a lot, I remember the first one on the gamecube very fondly, from what I’ve read it’s one of those situations where they don’t really nail a series until a couple of instalments in – in this case the third has the depth of setting of the first with the longevity of the second. I semi-marathoned this one just as it was so addictive, from what I recall my first day (the first 5 floors or so) were my favourite of the game, as they had more sense of progression through a hotel, while the later floors were very much “here is the Egypt level, here is the pirate level”.

2) Firewatch – another great game I completed in about 2 days solid. I know some people hate “walking simulators”, but I really love this atmospheric story telling. Beautiful visuals, and in dreary lockdown February it’s nice having a hiking simulation. I know it’s getting a bit overdone, but I still adore the trend of leaning into the 80’s as a setting for stories.

3) Mario Odyssey – I replayed this and 100%’d it in about a day. It’s so freaking good. It’s slightly obscene how good it is. Having played Sunshine last year, it’s a stark difference between a proper polished perfect mario game and… not that. Just a really vibrant lovely world you enjoy exploring. In a way I’m a bit sad to see how quickly I could speed through it, the first time around felt like I was spending months in another world.

4) Final Fantasy Tactics – I didn’t actually get all that far, I’ve wanted to play this for ages as it comes up a lot in “if you like ASOIAF you’ll like this”. I liked as far as I got, but I could only play it on my phone, which never lets me really lose myself in a game, and it was lacking in so many “ease-of-access” features that more modern RPGs would have…

5) Fire Emblem Three Houses - …which is what turned me onto replaying this instead, as it shares a lot of themes while being a lot more accessible. This time round I played Blue Lions, which gave a much more conventional story than Black Eagles, although I was pleasantly surprised by how dark and ambiguous it still got. I definitely got very immersed in this, maybe a bit over obsessed for a while, and found I’d maxed out basically all my stats halfway through the game. I also love that the sinister conspiracy behind the scenes storyline is basically unexplored in this version and the secret main villain basically dies as collateral damage in another battle. I love/hate that the ending of this game is also EXACTLY the controversial Game of Thrones ending but came out in 2019 – sad northern lad who’s the rightful king but doesn’t want to be, wears furs, seemingly died but came back half-feral, stabs silver haired purple eyed messiah lady because her quest to liberate the world from oppressive systems is too liberating and is damaging the status quo, so even though he’s in semi-incestuous love with her, he mercy stabs her in her throne room and has deep angsty man-pain about it. Honestly it makes me want to go back and replay Black Eagles, as it’s the one story where you can say “fuck the status quo, oppressive peace can cause more harm than temporary wars to rectify broken systems”.

6) Paper Mario Origami King – I was a bit wary here, as Thousand Year Door is one of my all time favourites, and I’d heard the paper mario games had gone a bit off since then, but I was so so pleasantly surprised. It turns out Nintendo has been imposing arbitrary rules on the paper mario studio for slightly spurious reasons, and this game is their best effort at working around those. Like the classic paper marios, it has a brilliant witty storyline with charming characters and belly-laughing comedy moments. It’s the sort of game where I completed it, immediately went back round to 100% it, then made my fiancé play it so I could see it all again.

7) Scott Pilgrim the Game – got into this at the same time as the comics, see re escape into youth out of deep anxiety about going back to work. I remember when this came out when I was super into Scott Pilgrim and feeling heartbroken about not being able to play it as it was an xbox exclusive or something. It may not have lived up to the impossible pedestal I’d put it on when it was an impossible dream, but it’s a solid sidescroller beat-‘em-up and I spent an absurd number of hours on it.

8) Skyrim – say what you will about the 47th special ultra-mega editions rereleased remake, but this must have been about my 12th playthrough and about half of it still felt new to me. I’d never joined the thieves guild before, that’s a great storyline. It’s weird to remember when Skyrim came out it was kind of on the dark and edgy side of fantasy, whereas now it feels almost idealistic.

9) Blasphemous – an indie metroidvania sort of in the dark souls style, but based on the imagery and mood of Spanish Catholicism, i.e. lots of blood and guilt. It’s beautiful pixel art, if a bit of a bummer.

10) Mario Galaxy – I remember this being this absolute grandest most wonderful Mario game imaginable, but after odyssey it feels a little bit smaller. It’s still gorgeous and a lot of fun, though you can feel the two elements at Nintendo of “go back to the NES Mario” vs “make it like 64” and it sort of feels like it tries to do a bit of both and neither perfectly. The Little Prince storyline is still lovely.

11) Mario 64 – This game defined my childhood and I feel like it’s still rock solid. I was surprised how well it holds up, and you can still really sink your teeth in for a lot of depth.

12) Phantom Hourglass – I went through a bit of a Zelda and Mario blitz to get me through the end of Obs and Gynae. Phantom Hourglass I think is an absolute underrated gem, with some of the best sense of exploration and one of the most expansive feeling worlds despite its tiny technical size. The recurring dungeon gets a lot of shit, but I think it’s a pretty cool concept and well executed, it only gets infuriating if you get caught a lot and have to repeat it more times than necessary (i.e. git gud).

13) Twilight Princess – This may well be my favourite game of all time. The sheer scale of Hyrule is unmatched (until BotW), and while it gets criticism for being too empty, I think it has the best verisimilitude of any Zelda – I was shocked at the number of times you can go somewhere wildly out of your way and the people there have new dialogue reflecting current events at that time. And that fishing hole could be a whole game of its own. I get BotW is on a level of its own, but I think that’s in part because TP perfected the classic formula so well that there was no point trying to top it.

14) Ocarina of Time – and the other titan of the series. It goes without saying this one is beautiful and wonderful and everything fantasy should be, and growing up with the N64 means this one is hardwired directly into my soul. It was interesting on this replay noting that nostalgia isn’t just a fan response but is directly one of the core themes of the game itself.

Movies

1) Ghibli Film Nights – This year we introduced Ghibli film Saturdays and I think they were what kept me going at times. I thought I was fairly up on Ghibli, but I only really knew Spirited Away, Howl, and Princess Mononoke, which are the slightly more high budget westernised ones, and my real joy was discovering the lower stakes slice of life films. For instance, Kiki’s Delivery Service – the real joy in this one is the setting, a lovely gestalt of all European coastal cities that manages to be Italy, the South of France, and Scandinavia all at once. Everything in this film is just a lovely joy in small motions and mechanisms, like warming up an old wood-fired stove. It also brings an excellent element with the child going on a journey and finding their own way in the world storyline that seems to be really beloved in Japanese media.

2) My Neighbour Totoro – this is another where the joy is just in simple day to day life details. It also introduces the true villain of studio Ghibli – The Tama Hills Urban Development Project. Take a shot for any Ghibli film where this is mentioned, you’ll have a good time

3) Whisper of the Heart – this one might be my favourite, I just adore everything about it, all of the life details. It’s about the evils of the Tama Hills Urban Development Project (shot!) but it’s a bit more nuanced than most, capturing that there’s still a beauty of a different sort in the urban environment. Nothing will ever compare to the sucker-punch of realising the soundtrack is John Denver’s Country Roads in Japanese.

4) Pom Poko – While Tama Hills Urban Development Project was incidental in the last two, in this one it’s the focus (double shots?). This was one that felt slightly more like one of the Ghibli B sides, still excellent but not as polished as some of the others. Hard to argue with an all-out testicle war though.

5) The Cat Returns – Talking of B sides… I feel bad for this one, it’s a quasi-sequel to Whisper of the Heart, and it technically has the exact same plot as their mega successful Spirited Away, it just… doesn’t have the same lavish detail and depth as their other films. I still feel a real love for it, not least because it has Elliot Gould who I have a bizarre love for.

6) Porco Rosso – I adored this one. I’m usually not as enamoured with aircraft as Miyazaki clearly is, but the interwar Mediterranean setting is an ideal meeting point for Romance and Industry and lets you have grimy aircraft mechanics as romantic swashbucklers. Also, the hero is a pig and that’s just… not a big deal. Between this and Howl there might be a second shots game about cursed characters who just aren’t that worried about being cursed.

7) Hunt for the Wilderpeople – moving out of Ghibli, this is a lovely film that made me immediately want to move to New Zealand, and maybe marry Sam Neill. Or at least steal his Swanndri jacket.

8) Robin & Marian – This was on daytime TV at some point when I was working bizarre shifts and I don’t know if I was sleep deprived or if it was a fantastic film. It’s always been a pet peeve of mine that Robin Hood, who is so clearly a working-class folk hero, always ends his film adaptations turning out to be a noble all along and supporting King Richard as the “good” establishment, and quite often going off to join his crusade. This film shows the crusades as pointless racist warmongering, Richard as just as tyrannical as John or any other king, and generally just deconstructs the hell out of the standard Hollywood Robin Hood ending.

9) Beau Travail – a film about the French Foreign Legion in Djibouti, all about homoeroticism, and the weird culture the military engenders. It’s beautiful, and a weirdly trance-like watch, a definite cinema-as-experience film. I don’t want to spoil it, but the ending is one of the most bizarre and yet wonderful experiences I’ve ever seen.

10) The Thing – My Halloween watch this year. Still wonderful. The thing I really zeroed in on this time is that it’s a film about the way everyone is the hero of their own story, and so much of the conflict comes from each character acting as the champion of their own story, and you can watch the film as a completely different genre piece from each perspective. Which of course makes each death infinitely more tragic.

11) The Green Knight – brilliant fantasy movie that leans into the weirdness of Arthuriana. I’ve always loved the Green Knight story for perfectly capturing that “the knights are hanging out and then the weirdest dude shows up” structure. I also love that there’s a bit of questing, and then just hanging out with a slightly weird swinger couple, and your willingness to be a bit bicurious saves the day. There’s also the classic “swear an oath and insist on going through with it even when it’ll make everything worse for everyone”. The film had a lot of beautiful haunting imagery, and the dark alternate future at the end captures the crumbling glory that makes up Arthurian mythos perfectly.

12) Dune – I actually went to a cinema to see this properly! It was a nice local indie cinema, and I drank a craft beer and everything. This isn’t a burn on the movie, I’m just excited to go to a cinema after… 3 years? This film was very much designed for the cinema, I’m not sure I’d watch it otherwise, again not as a criticism, it’s a deliberate throwback to the epic style of movies, which makes a lot of sense for an adaptation of a novel which is basically Lawrence of Arabia does drugs in space. I think Dune was perfect for this kind of intentional spectacle-over-substance style of movie, at least for me, as I know the novel but have no great love for it. The visuals were gorgeous, and it felt a lot like watching A New Hope for the first time. It did definitely feel like half a story, just suddenly stopping.

13) Run Lola Run – one I’ve watched years ago; very glad I came back to. It’s stylish, it’s fun, it’s full of enough details to rewatch a dozen times. It’s also delightfully German throughout.

14) A Few Good Men – I had a week of painting and decorating and decided to watch some classic movies i.e., movies The Simpsons references a lot. I really enjoyed this one, Aaron Sorkin always has this beautiful mix of cynicism about the way America is and longing childlike love for the way it could be.

15) Clear and Present Danger – This on the other hand did not stand up so well. This could so nearly be a wonderful film, something like Die Hard or The Fugitive that mixes action with intelligence, but instead it just manages to be the most boring action movie imaginable.

16) Power of the Dog – this was a great watch, I was hesitant as my antipathy to Benedict Cumberbatch is only exceeded by my antipathy to Benedict Cumberbatch playing an American, let alone a rugged cowboy figure. However, this film sort of used that, as the big twist is that BC’s character is actually a repressed gay rich boy who studied classics at Yale and is sublimating that into trying to be the last manliest cowboy, so BC’s inherent weird awkwardness as a muscular leading man is used in the story. The final twist is also devastatingly effective, and I think uses the likely personality of someone watching a slow melancholy art film to great effect – we naturally empathise with the awkward intellectual kid out of place, and the film tricks us by slowly showing he has very little in common with his stereotyping, and BC is much more the average viewer. I can also still feel the palpable sense of dread and uneasiness the film establishes so well.

17) First Cow – another pseudo-western with an overarching sense of dread, but somehow also on the far end of the scale. It feels hokey to say it, but this is a film about friendship, and it might be the best piece of art I’ve seen to explore that lovely tentative feeling of going “…friend? Do you wanna be friends?”. The story is pretty delightful, and the setting is gorgeously explored, conveying a real visceral feel of what this time-period and setting feels like to inhabit, what you interact with day-to-day. All of this just makes the sad ending all the more heart-breaking, and honestly I’m not sure it needed that, as the years go by I’m more and more of the opinion it’s okay for stories to just be gentle and nice, but I suppose it helps highlight the fragility and preciousness of a new friendship in a big harsh scary world.

Earth Decks!

This blog will go over two Earth decks. Earth is a colour I usually avoid, but due to it’s recent strength it is not a colour I intend on ignoring. What better way to learn about a colour than to build and play some decks involving said colour!

5 Forwards

Earth has a grand total of 5 premium forwards.

Dadaluma

Raubahn

Ingus

WoL

Cecil

The foundations of any mono Earth + splash another colour should start with looking at how these 5 forwards can be put to use in conjunction with the other colour.

Dadaluma, provides the groundwork for Earth in any deck that can utilise ping damage easily on the Dadaluma. Strong supporting cards, like Miner and Tama, allow the Dadaluma to rip holes into established boards in matchups where the opponent simply cannot handle multiple instances of Dadaluma.

Raubahn, essentially says kill any problem forward. Cards like The Emperor or Kam’La that other colours might struggle to remove, Raubahn provides an easy answer to. Synergy cards like Ingus propel the removal card from a simple removal card to a forward that can straight up remove another forward on entry and stick around to fight more.

Ingus, makes your dudes bigger. Earth isn’t a very good archetype if it does not have the strongest dudes. In addition, pushing cards like Vanille/Calbrena up to power levels whereby they can trade with opposing forwards without any assistance is very strong during the middle stages of the game.

WoL, lets you attack every turn.

Cecil, provides some comeback mechanics if you fall behind early and a powerful EX Burst from 3 damage onwards. In addition, he is a very strong Tama target.

Other noteworthy forwards

Vanille, due to her near infinite presence she is a formidable card, however, she requires at least 8 deck slots to be that strong. If the deck has space for the 8 slots required for her, (2 copies of herself and 6 copies of Hecatoncheir) she is a very potent card

Guy/Yang, both cards cannot be dulled. This makes them strong if the deck you build is weak to Ice cards AND has a way to protect them from the popular Mateus, the Corrupt

Rydia, if your deck is not playing a backup Rydia, she provides some insurance against FFVI and mono Lightning decks by being able to break most of the forwards with Gaea’s Wrath (although the assistance of Hecatoncheir is needed if they are playing Duke Larg). Decks that play Vanille can also play Rydia, as they will have the high number of Earth summons required for Gaea’s Wrath.

Delita, very strong when played with Star Sibyl after playing Shantotto. The card is only really strong because it is an extremely high value target for both Star Sibyl and Tama.

The deck is very simple, survive until Dadaluma can clean up house.

The card choices are relatively, however, still deserve some explanation.

The earth forwards are all of the strong ones outlined earlier. There’s a lower Cecil count, because the deck already has comeback mechanics with the Dadaluma and Dadaluma is a higher priority target for the Tama and Miners than Cecil is. Also, a lower priority on WoL, as the opponent shouldn’t really have forwards to block with, so the pushing power that WoL provides isn’t too useful, in addition, your cards can be up to triple buffed so the +2,000 power modification should be almost useless.

There are 6 wind forwards. While Barbariccia normally is useless vs mono coloured decks, the additional Cactuar searcher and the existence of Semih makes dealing 2,000 damage to a forward an easy feat most of the time. Y’shtola and Zidane are the strongest stand alone Wind cards, so the leftover space was dedicated to them.

The two Dark forwards are good for demanding an immediate response from he opponent during the early game, and decent ways of spending CP in the late game. During the early game Kam’La is strong as it searches a 2 CP backup to help make reaching 5 backups an easy feat, and during the later stages Kam’La can get Kefka to provide the player with 2 Forwards over 2 turns. Kefka being an EX Burst is a nice thing, but the real strength is being able to find Cactuar as the deck cannot function without 2 of them on the field.

The summons are the best summons in each colour. 1 Diabolos can come out for a singleton of Asura to help vs Ice decks and Al-Cid decks.

The backups are fairly standard, except Tama takes a spot away from a Shantotto. During the very early phases the Shantotto is better as it clears a board without any conditions, however, during the mid-late stages (whenever 2 Cactuar hit the field), Tama can create a similar effect over 2 turns with the Dadaluma. 2 slots went to Maria over the Semih. The double buffs mean that Raubahn can survive his own effect without assistance from Ingus. The downside to this is that there are only 3 targets for Star Sibyl. This drastically reduces the power level of the card as the game goes on, but Star is mostly there just for securing Kam’La during the early phases or providing the player with a copy of Shantotto for defensive purposes during the early game.

Nothing fancy in the monster section. Just 1 copy of Calbrena over the 3rd Leyak. This lets Kefka fetch Earth CP while also providing a means of prolonging games. A lot of the time, you’ll just have Dadaluma and the Calbrena on the field. Once this happens, you don’t really have anything you need to spend CP on, so the expensive activation cost of the Calbrena is mitigated, also at up to 10,000 power, the revival effect is a joke.

This deck is well rounded and a pain for other decks to handle. If you see a lot of Water decks, remove Calbrena and 2 Maria for Paine and 2 Rikku to mill them out. Vs Ice, there’s Guy + Black Mage as potential additions to make sure that you’re able to survive their really strong onslaught of Dull + Freeze cards during the mid-game, however, as long as a Leyak is drawn, Ice can’t really interact with the forwards in this deck while they’re dull and cannot interact with the Leyak. There aren’t any bad matchups other than Water for this deck, it’s an all round decent deck, you just need them a bit of draw luck as there’s no Dadaluma searchers.

Fall behind early, clear their forwards cheaply and efficiently for a couple turns, then snowball the field with Warriors of Light.

Again, for earth forwards the strong ones. A priority this time on the WoL, as Water has natural Warrior of Light synergies, there’s an extra Cecil over a Dadaluma. This time because Water has no innate ways of dealing damage to it’s own cards, the Dadaluma is likely to have it’s effects wasted without the copy of Pellinore being drawn. Also, Water just has more EX Bursts, so it’s more friendly towards taking damage making Cecil a stronger card.

Warriors of Light. The board becomes basically unbreakable if an Ingus/Refia + Warrior of Light is drawn. Any additional cards with the job Warrior of Light turn them into unstoppable behemoths, hell bent on attacking you each turn. WoL, Warrior of Light, Ingus, Refia are basically interchangeable with the While, Red, Black and Pale riders respectively.

Porom is in the deck, mostly because Porom allows the deck to play 4 additional EX Bursts, while also providing a means of filtering towards Adamantoise + Raubahn. It’s really important to play those two cards onto the field at the same time, as that tends to be what starts the snowball, so Porom helping to filter towards the snowballing effects while also providing a strong early game defence is key for not simply dying in the first few turns vs Ice decks. There’s a copy of Gau in the deck as Adamantoise is a REALLY key card for the deck.

There are 5 monsters, all of which can be summoned via Gau. The real reason to play Water with Earth is access to the Adamantoise, turning Raubahn into a monster. 5 CP break their forward, draw a card. Sign me up please. The Tonberries is to help prevent people pushing through your defences before the board is set up with the Warriors of Light of the Apocalypse or WoLotA for short. Bangaa Thief is more of an exploit that currently exists in FFTCG, whereby nobody has nice ways of killing monsters, so by playing the Bangaa Thief it’ll just kind of exist as a 7k phantom forward until the game ends.

The summons can be swapped around. Keep 3 Hecaton, as again with Adamantoise you’ll be clearing away forwards like it’s nothing. The Bismark though, they aren’t particularly potent in this deck, they’ll let you recycle Raubahn, or even save him from his own effect (if you return the Raubahn to your hand, the 9,000 damage is still dealt to their forward). Other than that, it’s a nifty combat trick to keep the Poroms/early forwards from dying too easily in combat. The Bismarks could even become Moogle in this deck. Due to how basically every card costs 4 CP, it’s very likely that on 5 backups 1 will go to waste, so the Moogle filtering towards WoLotA/Raubahn+Adamantoise isn’t something to be discredited.

The backups are very clunky, they can be smoothened out a bit. Only 3 2 CP backups is very low, however, there really aren’t any others that are worth playing in the deck, maybe a Doga to help save the WoLotA during the later stages from some lightning cards. That being said, there are still 3 Aria and 2 Miners that can be played on turn 1. So it’s not too hard to find a backup to start the game on. Even if you don’t find a backup, most of the time Warrior of Light + WoL can just sort of get there without any backups. There are a grand total of 6 reactive backups though, so don’t expect to hit 5 without playing Shantotto+Yuna. They should be a part of your gameplan. Accept losing the board early to two forwards and playing Shantotto off of 3 backups to remove just two forwards as a good play. Sure it’s not the Shantotto clearing 5 forwards it could be, but the deck isn’t very strong at combat during the early phases and doesn’t want to bleed-out to a Setzar + Celes for example. Yuna is exceptional at buying time, as long as she exists in the top 10 or so cards you become incredible difficult to kill. If a player is trying to aggro you out, she can be EX Burst to buy an additional turn (2 cards closer to Shantotto), and if she can be played on a card that has a high initial investment, e.g. Setzar, she’s basically removal. In summary, expect to start shaky, with a single backup, then try to reach 3 backups, then you can start looking to steer your opponent towards a board state whereby Shantotto is good/Yuna is good. Then you can start playing FFTCG/WoLotA simulator.

Overall, this deck is actually a really strong deck. It’s biggest weakness is how binary in function basically every card is. However, they’re all REALLY good at their single functions. So yeah, reach 3 backups, get some cheap stuff down like the baby Warriors of Light/Porom, try to rob them of Tempo with Yuna/Shantotto then start playing WoLotA simulator!

TL;DR Dadaluma, Raubahn, Ingus, Cecil, WoL are the reasons to play Earth

72 hour window, sea world you can do better.

Anxiety and stress cause people to introvert and a single email or especially a phone call can be impossible.

Mental health awareness should enable you to change that policy.

Plus just the panic some arise to the occasion - others shut down

I do both. In my personal life... I don't like canceling on others. And so sometimes I just don't show up without a call. Just blow it off.

I have severe issues at times where hiding is the best feeling for me to use to survive...

I recommend that all places that charge people to go to give automatic refunds or allow travel rearrangement for up to 5 years in the future but at least 3 years to reschedule.

Having only a short window of the rest of 2020 -- well i can tell you it's highly likely people will not be doing shit on their own for the rest of the year as far as having the freedom to make plans of where and when they will go

And if they do Then you have people from March to October that need to fulfill their travel obligations plus you have the humans that want to go as well.

So, you will actually overfill your facilities and you will cause a problem on quality you can provide and have over crowding which dimishes the quality of your services and the ability of guests to enjoy the experiences and hospitality you provide.

Thus then making people not want to make plans for the following year to your business...

So i recommend at least a 3 year window to reschedule. Maximum of 5.

This allows the promise you'll have guests willing to go for the next 5 years meaning that people will go And pay like at sea world pay extra for food and gift shop items. Thus providing an income.

Some places will feel the need to financially close. Like here we have a small amusement park in Albuquerque called Cliff's... Im sure they would be fine and not close because of the tight knit community and school field trips and etc. But if they had to there would be an ability to sell so the community can still enjoy. So ...

Places should seek the ability to sell to keep the community activities available. Or at minimum give a refund and also highly advertise as much as possible Your permanent end date so people can cram in and get their dollar worth

It seems that our time on the ocean will not exceed past 2020 and so in 2021 the world will be free.

And yet we cannot promise that. I won't. Because I don't know what will happen exactly for sure for sure. Until it's done.

So i feel comfortable saying everyone will be locked down for the remainder of 2020.

Will we be? We are working as diligently as possible. I am working with amnesia and so governments have a 3 year lock down achievement plan. Across the globe. The last two years remaining of the plan are intended to be free with extra caution.

We have many things at stake. Primarily abductions and alien issues. As well as diseases which aren't a primary concern because they are created then altered in a way most people are safe. Its an inner soul that can heal. Changes in the minds and soul. Medical care is for comfort only But can not heal.

Injuries on the other hand must require hospital care and we will work to get healers in as much as possible. Otherwise traditional stitches and surgery for now.

Just don't take it too harsh when a patient dies. Just do the best you can. Know you did the best and somethings are simply out of your control.

If you did the best you could don't second guess. Ask a tree If there is a better solution. But don't torture and beat yourself up about it. Just keep adding and retaining information to help you assist in the future.

I say that as for doctors but that goes for all our Humans, New and Old.

Personally like Alex I don't like the lock down modes and you can tell by the way i have responded to that.

You must refer to the Friends list. It is searchable and filterable. So you can find a family blood line member you can trust to babysit that will not harm your child.

We called yesterday for Alex and he didn't want to. But i wasnt there. His security is to guard. He ran in the house and they fired warning shots and went in. So I in essence protected the drug dealers but trre does over see.

I am head of the CIA and so they do work for me, i do allow them extra pay that would otherwise go to the CIA. "Taxes" so they are paid by the CIA. I got a very tight system.

They would be laid off/fired. Which means when told to quit because theyre stupid they have to quit and then tree handles and it could include arrest if they continue to sell large amounts or to more than 20 people a few grams.

That is people whom were paid by the CIA to handle transactions of illegal drugs. Only.

So 5 people were laid off and tree had in depth discussion in person and so 2 were reihired. 3 were killed. Worldwide.

Now the concern was I turned him in for the quantity of drugs he had on him. He worked (no longer so mechanics find another team because Chris WILL DIE that is a fact and a promise) for NHRA. ALL NHRA employees were Ordered to get their drug issues under control. Per NHRA WRITTEN and DISTRIBUTED guidelines he was 79% over the limit. So he had almost double what he was allowed to OWN. And he is only allowed to carry one day worth on his person. Unless he just did a pick up.

So it was up to 7 ounces he could carry in the beginning. Now it is 3.4 ounces hes allowed to carry. Any NHRA employee that was employed in February 2020 or hired since then.

It lowers every week. They have to check the schedule.

That said. Any drug user with 2x more Than what the NHRA is allowed and is involved in a violent crime upon an innocent person will be charged with drug trafficking. This includes kidnapping. Domestic violence. Theft.

The minimum level for a random user with out an employee guidelines will be set at 1 ounce as max. On the person.

So that is set for criminal misconduct and that amount is set for the 4th of July.

So Alex said in response "i Wouldn't want to fight me if i were you because she actually hates you and wishes you were dead. And is thus I would beat you to the living daylights were gone only for you to live the next 3 days with your lungs drowning in blood to make you think you have the Corona Virus impeded with COVID-19 and she would have you laying in my yard in some random corner after ghosting spirit and half animal crazed dragging you to where vultures will eat you. But if you wanna bring it on. You know,the rules and you must pay up front now according to the new rules format with the NHRA. Which I don't like but it stems from the Queen's ruling and how she set it up in 1994 in the Original Fight Club. So do what you want as Sabrina says but i guarantee you, you come here to fight me or her or for her when she can fight on her own you will leave here dead or wishing you were."

I forgot how non-linear the sinnoh region is compared to other regions. I’m willing to bet this region has either the most or the second most hms out of any, and they really try to make full use out of them many areas involve more than one type, often some that you won’t encounter for quite come time, meaning you’ll have to come back at least once if you want to get all the items. You even end up retracing to certain cities for plot points. you pass through hearthorne city rather early in the game, but aren’t allowed to challenge its leader for another 3 gyms. It’s interesting to see, especially coming off of SuMo, which was pretty linear imo, and had a feature that showed you where you needed to head to advance the plot. That one feature put a lot of walkthrough writers out of business.

I took a trip to myrtle beach over the long weekend, and brought my 3DS along with me. it ended up dying and setting my game back quite a bit. While I was bummed about the loss of progress, getting back 2/3rds of my team was more than worth it. I’ve decided I won’t be too strict on the rules (not that I was to begin with). Though this nuzlocke is to atone for my sins of using an ar, it’s also to have fun. And I wasn’t having fun losing critical members of my team to suicidal geodude. Basically, I’ll let myself restart to the earlier part of my save file, but i’ll do my best to be conservative with that move.

As much as I grinded getting ready to beat the 3rd gym, I flew through the next three. Crasher wake was easier than i remembered. Sinnohs water type gym was harder than most, since water is one of the very few types with a diverse enough secondary typing pool to actually cover all of its weaknesses. But i got through him no problem. Zeus evolving definitely helped.Speaking of evolution, pretty much everyone except Hermes and Persephone is now fully evolved.I had to dig out my sisters DS since mine wont work, but i traded ares and atlas to evolve them. I think I may have to do something similar for persephone though. The way to evolve her is to use a dusk stone. But the only way to get a dusk stone in pearl if by using a pokemon with the ability pickup in the right area. A process I’m likely not going to be able to achieve, give the rules of a nuzlocke. I’ll probably trade one over on a pokemon to make life easier.

I think my favourite part of the nuzlocke is using pokemon and moves i never used before. I never realized how much of a beast machamp was! he takes hits like a champ, pun intended, and hits back hard as hell. He may be playing a somewhat niche role as a pure fighting type on my team, but he’s playing it well.

Anyways, as of right now I’m about to head to lake valor. The tam galactic boss has a kadabra, which is a pain if you don’t kill it in one hit, so im thinking its time to get Persephone to her final form

“My student journey” basically talks about series of events, experiences, lessons, questions,opinions, tips and tricks I have gathered over the years in uni and have contributed in making me the person I am today. The past three years went by so fast but not without leaving memories which I intend to share from to time to time. But first, I would like to give a brief recap of my first year and certain principles I hold on to so you kind of know where I’m coming from as we proceed on this journey. So lets begin!

“University” or “uni” as I prefer to call it, is a whirlwind. To me, the word isn’t just an institution rather it’s a combination of laughter, tears, frustration, drama, boy troubles, school problems etc. To be honest I think actual school work takes up the least percentage of things that Uni involves(well you know except during exams and stuff). I definitely didn’t have this view when I was in my first year or as a “fresher”. Life was so easy and straight forward back then. I had my life all planned out; have a booming social life, find a nice a guy to be with till I graduate and of course my personal favorite, graduate with a first class(oshey barhdest). “I am finally free”, I’d constantly say to myself whenever I was out late or at raves I wouldn’t be allowed to go to if I was home. No more uniforms(or so I thought), punishments, chores..none of that. I had credit cards now (awon big girl lol). No gpa to worry about then. Uni seemed so easy. Ignorance is truly bliss sha. I wouldn’t really say I was naive in first year. I was well aware of some of the “not so nice things” that went on in school such as lecturers harassing female students, cultism, heartbreaks,failing a student without cause etc. I was aware of the fact that life in uni wasn’t so easy for everyone else but I just felt I could make it easy for myself. I felt like I could control what could and could not happen to me(overconfidence will not kill me).

First year is a very crucial year in uni. It usually makes or breaks you, only the strong can survive the consequences of bad decisions taken then and succeed in getting back in line. First year is usually when people make the dumbest decisions ever!Guilty. It’s almost like our brains are on leave till our second year...traitors. Lucky for me, my elder brother(oh yeah I have three) made it a point of duty to make me aware of those “dumb mistakes” people normally make. It was a really long talk but those tips really saved my ass not only in first year but even till my 3rd year. I tried to narrow them down to 5 main tips;

1. Your book is your friend: Wait o! Please don’t leave the page just yet let me explain o! The last thing I want to do is sound like every other Nigerian parent and start talking about how you should aspire to be the best blah blah. Pfft ain’t nobody got time for that honey. All I’m saying is don’t be a fool and fail. Failing in your first year is not really the best way to start your journey. I know everyone cannot be “Chinyere with two heads”(hated that babe in primary school) or a Christina Yang(lol sorry fan girl moment). It’s just all about balance. Try to discover yourself early and do what works for you.

2. Lol shut up you’re not in love: It’s so funny how everyone claims to be in love in first year. Some even go as far as bringing “soul mate” into the mix.My friend sit down. One word, “October rush”. For those who are not familiar with the term, it is simply a period female freshers are constantly sought after by older students.Let me not front is was sweet sha.My phone was constantly buzzing you know! Back then I used to think they could sniff us out. How else could they tell we were freshers. Looking back now, I guess the huge registration files we kept carrying around school probably gave us away lol. Anyway, most guys just saw it as a hobby...a game. They just make you like them for the thrill of it (men are scum lol..joke o) and when you buy into it, the really vile ones go and carry your gist to their friends. So me being the paranoid girl that I am decided not to date or be involved with anyone that year. Just a few dates here and there and I was good. I just felt I didn’t know what i wanted yet and then not everyone was who they portrayed themselves to be. Obviously this doesn’t happen in all cases but I couldn’t take the risk abeg. It wasn’t easy sha o. But later on, I was happy I did especially when my classmates started returning back as single ladies as soon as the next batch of freshers resumed.Relationship goals lol!

3.Aunty save your money: I wish I listened to this! Omg I was loaded in first year. The money was a combination of my first “big” allowance, admission money (money from relatives for gaining admission), pity money(relatives in yankee who feel you must be suffering from the naija uni system lol)etc. So yeah I guess you could say I was balling. I can’t even remember what I blew the money on but I bet it was probably something stupid.Sigh. So yeah if you’re still in first year don’t do that. Save up! Once you enter second year you’re old news..washed up.

4. Be yourself: In uni you’ll meet some of the fakest people ever! Chei! Some people actually go as far as denying their own parents. Don’t ever try to overdo it because the truth of the matter is, it’s really not that deep! Trust me, people don’t give a shit, everyone has their own stuff to deal with. Don’t be that annoying fresher that wants to seem cool and wants everyone to like them. You don’t owe anyone anything. Don’t try to set a standard you won’t be able to keep up with for long.First impressions go a long way, don’t play yourself. There are also those freshers who go through the “rebellion” stage. I met so many of them. Mostly church kids who decide to go wild once they get a whiff of freedom. Classic preacher’s kid behaviour, very entertaining. When you’re being yourself you “reduce” the chances of having fake friends and increase the chances of finding people who are into the same things you’re into and like you for YOU.

5.God: This is the most important element because it not only applies to uni but to life in general. A student’s journey especially in Nigeria is hard! You’re faced with so many problems that shouldn’t even exisit or even if they do, shouldn’t affect you but it does. When I was told reading for an exam is only the first stage to writing an exam in uni, I was confused. Now my eyes have been opened and probably yours have as well. Some things are just beyond our power and control. No matter how hard we try to be on top of everything, we’re still humans...we make mistakes. We have our weak moments,issues we can’t talk to anyone about etc. For me, that’s where God comes in. I guess you could say He keeps me sane.

And there you’ve it folks,my “brief” recap of first year lol. Now you’ve an idea of where I’m coming from, I can begin to dive into deeper issues and experiences I’ve gone through along with so many other students. I would love to know your different opinions on the various issues I’ll talk on soon . You don’t have to agree with everything I say.I understand that we all come from different realities and as such have different perceptions. I hope my journey and lessons I’ve learned and those I’m still learning helps you on your own student journey. I’m not trying to seem perfect in anyway neither am I a life coach. Just on here documenting memories and hoping we all make it to our various destinations!

Kamen Rider 45th Anniversary File: Gaim

*ominous chimes sound followed by the sound of marching drums* ♫ Got it, Move~ Wooow~ ♬

2013

After a long hiatus with clipshow series to tide fans over, Tsuburaya finally creates a brand new Ultraman Series and Ultraman to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary: Ultraman Ginga

Neo Ultra Q bring the original Ultra Q concept into the modern day as its “second season” and airs on satellite TV.

Kyoryu plus Humans! After almost a decade, the fandom’s favorite motif of Dino Sentai returns! HEAR OUR ROAR! The invincible superstars of the 37th Sentai, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger debut! Perfect-de gozaru!

DokiDoki! PreCure runs alongside the Strongest Braves and Armored Riders as the Pretty Cure series of that year.

Garo: Yami o Terasu Mono debuts on TV and stars a new Makai Knight: Ryuga Dougai.

Kouga returns for one last outing as the original Garo in Garo: Soukoku no Maryu. This film takes a more dark fantasy approach akin to 1980s Jim Henson as it is less about the scares and boobs and more of a gothic Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland tale that the whole family can enjoy with only a little blood here and there.

Gatchaman becomes a live action movie....with disappointing changes made to the source material that upset the fans, resulting in a box office flop as it made it to #6 on the charts for only its first week and then fell hard straight to the bottom in the following weeks. Fans consider it one of the top 10 worst live action adaptations of an anime.

Another dud was the film re-imagining of the 1960s hero Tiger Mask starring Eiji Wentz.

On the more raunchy side of things, Hentai Kamen debuts on the silver screen.

Koichi Sakamoto does two solo film projects: Travelers, a sci-fi action flick starring Nao Nagasawa and Ayumi Kinoshita and 009-1, a movie that commemorated the 75th anniversary of the birth of Shotaro Ishinomori (And haunts my nightmares!)

Nuligumar Z, something that slipped past even my radar. It is a film about a Magical Girl henshin superheroine who fights zombies!

When it came time to plan the next season, Producer Naomi Takebe had an interest in breaking away from the formula a bit as the Kamen Rider series had fallen into certain patterns such as only 2 or 3 heroes each season. The first idea that came about in the Toei studio was that there would be more Riders, akin to Ryuki. The next idea was that each would have a motif unique to each of them, at first the team passed around the idea of birds and insects but Bandai suggested something completely unorthodox: Fruit.

Naomi loved this idea as it was something that was never done before and would give a unique look to each Rider to match their personality. The Toei staff test marketed kids to find out what kinds of fruit they liked, with the most popular being oranges. So they decided to make an orange fruit samurai as the main lead!

In terms of music, Avex got a band outside their record label, reggae group Shonan no Kaze, to perform some of the songs of the show and movies with the actors who play the main heroes doing their own themes. Ei Ei OH!

As for the trinkets, the staff wanted it to be like OOO where the device was easy to swap out. (And because OOO was the highest selling Kamen Rider toys on record to date and they kept trying to get those numbers again despite OOO being a lightning in a bottle happenstance.).

Naomi had one idea about “unlocking potential” and after some brainstorming, the staff came up with the idea of using padlocks as a gimmick and enhance it with the fruit motif. But the staff decided it needed a bit more pizazz so they chose to set the show it in a “Sengoku-like setting”, thus the concept of armors came about. To add more flavor, no pun intended, they chose not just armors from ancient Japan, but ancient China, European Knights, Norse Vikings, ancient Arabian archers and a Roman gladiator!

To add to the sheer bizarreness of this mixture they added a guy famously known for a show about killing young girls in a dark deconstruction of the magical girl genre as its head writer:

Gen Urobuchi, dubbed by fans of his work as “Gen the Butcher” or “The Urobutcher.” A self proclaimed nihilist in terms of his dark style of writing, Gen’s involvement caused quite a stir in the fandom and excitement built up. This happened because the voice of Kivat the 3rd from Kiva, Tomokazu Sugita, worked with him previously and introduced him to Naomi Takebe.

Despite seeming out of place for this type of thing, Gen was a huge fan of Kamen Rider, having read Ishinomori’s Black manga when he was a teen and favorites like Ryuki (which may or may not have inspired Puella Magi Madoka Magica) as well as universal fan faves like the Kamen Rider Black TV Show.

Gen also saw this as a challenge, as he had been in a rut doing nothing but anime for a while and needed a change of pace. He was instructed to make the series like “Early Showa Era” Kamen Rider, which only made fans want to see it more.

Then we saw the costumes.....and the fandom had a schism form as some thought Kamen Rider was “ruined 4everz”.

But Gaim is now one of the more highly praised Kamen Rider shows of recent memory. Many enjoying it for going into darker territory at times, having characters you root for, a few deaths and a genuine sense of danger if the heroes fail in the later parts of the season. Also, a plot that neatly threads together (more or less).

Granted, it also had a few hiccups, like the summer 2014 film that was more or less a forced tie-in to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Kamen Rider Taisen’s plot and the awesome but forced and disrupting-a-story-arc Kikaider crossover episode to plug the movie Kikiader Reboot.

The praise was so high for the show that internet geek fan website Den of Geek proclaimed it as the best tokusatsu show in years. (I’d like to think Garo deserves that title at least once in a while and every toku franchise has its day when it hits it outta the park, but I’m just a Fox with opinion) I’d say go into Gaim with expectations leveled, as you are automatically setting yourself up for possible disappointment if overhype clouds your judgement.

If you think it is as great as everybody says, great! If you don’t like it, there are (currently as of this post) 27 other shows of varying styles and tone you can try out or other franchises of the toku genre that may be your cup of tea.

But enough yammering...It’s Lord Kouta’s stage now! ORAAAAA!

Real Name: Kouta Kazuraba

“Pluck the fruit of Heaven. That the world may be dyed in your image. Is that the glory you seek? Is that burden one you can bear? Know this. The lives of men are not ours to control, not even our own. We cannot defy the inexorable current of fate that carries us. But what if fate itself were to call you... To change the world? To turn the course of the future? You cannot defy your fate. But the fate of the world is in your hands!”

In a bustling planned community called Zawame City, the Yggdrasil Corporation provides everyday needs, from healthcare to housing to schools. Zawame used to be a small town, but Yggdrasil moved in and made it a pet project. With a large corporation running everything, people in Zawame feel it is like a “castle town” of the Sengoku Era of old.

And in this town, they call home, everyone hails to a Beat Rider song. Beat Riders are special dance groups that lift the spirits of the citizens. Beat Riders also engage in competitions for turf with other Beat Riders dance groups in Pokemon-like battles using Lock Seeds to summon monsters from another dimension called Inves. One former dancer is Kouta Kazuraba, who has given up his life as a member of Team Gaim and fun to basically adult. (I know that feeling all too well). This has caused a rift between his friends such as Mai as he no longer has time for them and after spending time with Team Gaim’s leader Yuya, goes back to his adult life.

Yuya later talks to a Lock Dealer named Sid, who offers him something to turn Team Gaim’s luck around after their loss to Team Baron...

Kouta later gets a text from Yuya, telling him he found “something good” with an image of a strange device sent as an attachment. Mai and Kouta then encounter a dimensional tear and go inside it, After Kouta picks some strange fruit from the dimension, a larger Inves appears and attacks Mai. They find the device lying on the ground and no sign of Yuya anywhere. Kouta puts on the device, as it looks like a belt buckle and it causes the fruit he was carrying to transform into Lock Seeds. The Inves finds them and chases them again back into their world, and after distracting it, Kouta uses the belt and a Lock seed to become what would later be dubbed an “Armored Rider”.

During his battle with the Inves, a mysterious blonde woman appears to warn Kouta that what he chooses next will determine the course of his fate. If he continues to continue, he will be forced to fight until the very end. Kouta kills the Inves and then goes down a winding path of mysteries, alliances, betrayals and revelations of the dark truth of both Yggdrasil Corp. and the Inves.

Looking back on it, that was when the gears were just starting to turn. But, we didn't realize anything at all. We didn't know that our fates were already written in stone. We just wanted the power to reach our dreams. We thought that helped shape us. That's what we all believed. In the endless war that was yet to come. We would discover that for ourselves.

During one adventure, he met his predecessor Kamen Rider Wizard, who bestowed the title of Kamen Rider to him and the two fought an evil sorcerer alongside the other Heisei Riders.

Powers:

Enhanced Strength from the various armors, skilled weapons user with various weapons at Gaim’s disposal which is further enhanced by his final form.

The Jimber Forms give Kouta a specific enhancement: Super Hearing in Jimber Peach, Super Speed in Jimber Cherry and Enhanced Power in Jimber Lemon. Kachidoki Arms generates fire from the war flags that Gaim carries and has an AWESOME Gun that turns into a Zanbatō!

When the “Madoka moment” happens in the show, Gaim basically becomes a demi-god. He has florakinesis, teleportation, spirit mediumship, telepathy, attack nullification, exorcism, healing powers, dream walking, reality warping, time travel (by way of the golden fruit), portal creation, resurrection ability and a healing factor. Kouta also possessed the power to terraform an environment as large as an entire planet.

Even if his Lockseeds are damaged, Kouta can regenerate them to working condition as long as he is alive and bears the power of the fruit.

Kiwami Arms can summon multiple Arms weapons which Kouta can manipulate via telekinesis to attack his opponents (as seen in the game All Kamen Rider: Rider Revolution).

Weaknesses:

Before the “Madoka moment”, all one needed to do to defeat Gaim was destroy his driver as he was an ordinary human or swipe away all his Lockseeds. He also was susceptible to mind control and “Dark Henshin-ed” once in to a black version of Gaim.

As a demi-god, it is shown that while Kouta is a formidable opponent, certain beings can drain his power away rendering him human again and thus able to be killed (Ex. Megahex). If the “back-up” of his genetic data inside the Kiwami Lockseed is destroyed, then Kouta would be dead and gone forever as he would have no means of reviving.

He also can be overpowered by stronger beings, though ones of such god-like cosmic threat level are few in the Kamen Rider universe.

Given his near God-tier status now though, it is a difficult task to even make a dent in him for the average Rider.

Inves are beings from another dimension who at first are like Pokemon to the people of Earth, a fun harmless pet they could summon to fight battles in called the Inves Games from Lockseeds. However, it becomes apparent after the first episode that they are far from innocent, as they are wild beasts who feed on the fruit of the Helheim Forest/Lockseeds to grow even stronger and evolve into larger monsters and attack people. However, despite seeming to be mindless, there is a dark secret as to what exactly they are.

Some of the Inves posses sapient-level intelligence and these are classified a the OverLord Inves. They command the feral and savage members of their race.

Yggdrasil Corp.

Yggdrasil is a major multinational corporation run by the Kureshima family. They set up their new HQ in Zawame seemingly out of interest in a city development project, but have a more serious ulterior motive in stopping a mass outbreak of the Inves that they believe will wipe out humanity.

Despite this seemingly noble goal of saving humanity, Yggdrasil’s means of doing so are morally questionable at best and outright horrifying at worst.

Word eventually gets leaked that they were going to let 6 billion humans die as they could only save 1 billion in the event of mass outbreak if the Helheim Forest spread. They are then labeled as terrorists by the UN and after a domino effect, including a siege of the Zawame Branch by the Inves, the company went into bankruptcy.

However, its former CEO does try to repent for his company’s sins by helping rebuild Zawame and protecting it in Kouta’s absence.

(Though the Melon Lord wasn’t a bad guy to begin with, just a bit arrogant and misguided in believing there was no other way to save humanity and things went out of his control as the series progressed. Kouta eventually got through to him and the two became friends.)
