Author Note #2: I apologize. It’s supposed to be a drabble and went much longer. I wasn’t able to get the third one in but when I have more time, might see about doing a part 2. This was fun!
Y/N knew the brothers first by reputation then introduced by Bobby a few years back when she ran into a pair of lamias. The hunt ended well and Y/N enjoyed the craziness of the case with them as they did with her, so they have remained in contact since.
It had been months since Y/N and the Winchesters had hunted together. She had picked up a weird case in a typical suburban area that she couldn’t put her finger on, so she gave up after two weeks and called them for help.
They drove in and met at her hotel room. When they came up to the third floor and knocked, having seen your old Ford Escape was there, but Y/N didn’t answer. They exchanged a look between them and Dean pounded on the door as Sam called you. Still silent except for your ringtone coming from inside the room—one that Dean had recommended for their ringtone of Metallica he liked. Dean moved to the side and drew his gun as Sam backed up doing the same and then kicked the door in.
Y/N laid across the closest queen size bed to the door. A small open box fell on to the bed next to her. Dean ran up to and kept beside her to check her pulse, “She good.” Sam with his gun at the ready checked the small hotel room, “All clear.” He went and closed the door while Dean checked her out.
She was in a pale pink tank top and blue jeans tucked into calf-high black boots. Sam quickly searched in the closet and under the bed and drawers, “Dean.” A hex bag in his hand and anger began to cross his features. He opened and tore up the bag then trashed it.
Dean looked very confused at the bag then at Sam and motioned for him to look at her, “Y/N has pink stuff on her.”
Sam looked at him, “What?” He leaned over her and looked carefully, a fine pink powder dusted much of her face and neck. He saw a pen on the nightstand and took it using it like a stick to turn the box upright. “Whatever it is, it was in the box,” Sam stated.
Dean glanced at the box then back to Y/N. “Maybe after cleaning it off, she’ll wake up?” Dean questioned out loud and moved to the bathroom before Sam could reply to get a wet washcloth. He returned with a warm, wet washcloth and a dry one and started gently to wipe her face and neck off.
Y/N began to stir, her eyebrows slightly furrowed and with a quietly sleepy voice she said , “Stop” as she tried to move her face from the washcloth. She attempted to lift her hands but struggled. Dean smirked at her reaction thinking it was cute. “You got whammied, Y/N.” He said as he wiped where he had removed the powder with the dry washcloth. Her eyes fluttered for a few seconds. When she finally opened her eyes and saw Dean’s face, she smiled brightly at him, “Hey.”

“Safe house. Lock down. I’m coming.” He barks.
“I’m here.” She sniffles. He hits end, ripping his bedroom door open and breaking into a sprint down the hall.
“FRIDAY, ready the quin jet.” He orders jabbing at the elevator button. “Alert Stark, I’m leaving. Emergency.” He nods, as he steps on to the elevator.
“Of course Agent Barton.” Her voice calm, smooth and in control.

Clint calls a two minute warning, flipping switches as the tower comes into view. You clutch tighter to the handle on the car seat sitting on the floor between your feet. You swallow hard, the lump rising once again. Your body still numb from the shock of the earlier events.
Clint kicks in the door of the safe house, looking like something out of a movie. The hero you’d been waiting for, if you were being honest. He glances around, clocking the room. He scoops up the car seat, sets it on the table, before pinning you with a look.
“Move your ass. We’ve got a fight coming for you.” He tips his head. You nod, your hands fumble for Anthony, curled up on the bed. “I’ll get him. Ready yourself.” He moves towards you, taking over, he picks Anthony up smoothly, and slips him in the seat. Quick with the straps, he covers the small boy before he spins it around and pulls the cover all the way down.
“I don’t, I don’t know, why.” You blink.
“Melt down later Y/N. My arrival pinned your location, they’re coming.” He nods. “Turn that training on.” He slips the diaper bag across his chest, lifting the car seat. His face said he was ready to murder, the diaper bag and car seat, made your head tip in confusion. But you’d learned too long ago that you should never underestimate Clint Barton.
“You sure we have to go here?” You ask, your voice shakes.
“No where else the two of you will be safe. I have to bring the team in on this.” He glances back as the jet shifts, readying to land. You squeeze your eyes shut as the landing begins to open. “You’re still one of us. You’re family. We protect our family.” Clint was next to you, his hand on your shoulder.
“Okay.” You swallow, nodding. Clint pulls you up to your feet, grabbing the bags as you lift Anthony’s car seat. Clint leads you down the landing and towards the elevator. “Clint.” You pause looking at him. “Promise. Swear on your God son, you’ll keep the secret.” You swallow.
“I swear. Not on Anthony, not on anyone. I swear because it’s not my place to say anything.” He nods.
The elevator ride to the living quarters was torture. Your grip on the car seat handle was white knuckle by the time you arrived. Clint stepped out, waiting for you to follow, you shuffle out after him. He moved down the hall and you followed at a much slower pace.
“Barton. What the hell happened?” You could hear Tony. A smile slips across your lips.
“I had an emergency.” Clint explains.
“Are the kids okay?” Nat asks. You continue the slow pace down the hall.
“Fine. It’s sort of a long story.” He was struggling.
“Is that a cut above your eye?” Sam asks, you knew that voice too well.
“Were you in a fight?” Nat asks.
“I was helping a friend.” Clint sighs.
“A friend?” Peter, you swallow, your eyes sinking closed. You adjust the car seat in your hands. You step around the corner, looking at the team.
“Someone came for me.” You explain, your voice still shaking.
“Y/N?” Peter blinks at you.
“Oh my god!” Wanda squeals running at you, quickly you swiftly set Anthony’s car seat down and wrap your arms around her.
“What the hell happened to you?” Buck takes you next, you had a bruise across your cheek and a split lip.
“Someone made a move for us.” You squeeze him back as he crushes you to his chest.
“Us?” Nat looks at you before she hugs you tightly.
“Um. I have someone for you to meet.” You smile, you stoop scooping up the car seat you move towards the island setting it on the surface. Rolling the cover up, exposing Anthony to the room. “This is Anthony.” You swallow looking down at your son.
“Who’s baby is that?” Sam looks around.
“Mine.” You smile softly at him.
“Anthony?” Tony grins, moving towards you.
“Had to name him after the best man I know.” You grin, your eyes welling up.
“I’m going to yell later, but right now I’m going to hug the breathe out of you.” He pulls you in, kissing the top of your head.
“Can I?” Steve grins, looking at Anthony.
“Of course.” You nod, your cheek against Tony’s chest, his arms still around you.
“Careful of his head.” Nat instructs, hovering over Steve.
“Support his weight.” Clint hovers as well.
“I lift tanks, I think I have ten pounds of adorable.” Steve grins. Anthony sleeps like a log, his arm and leg flop over Steve’s arm. His little mouth falls open, his light brown hair is rumbled and messy.
“Who the hell is the father?” Buck looks over at you.
“Not important.” You shrug your shoulder, looking away.
“Doesn’t matter.” Tony nods, squeezing you. “He’s got enough family right in this room.” Tony nods.
“God Y/N, he’s so cute.” Peter grins, watching Anthony sleep in Steve’s arm.
“How old?” Wanda looks up grinning.
“Ten months, almost eleven.” You smile at her.
“I want to eat those cheeks. Look how chubby they are.” Nat coo’s.
Anthony let’s out a sneeze, his whole body curls in and his eyes open. His brow comes together, and his eyes get wide as he looks up at Steve. Finding a new, random person holding him. The look on his face makes everyone chuckle, he’s got deep brown eyes and full lips, matching his round cheeks. Nat looks at you, and back to Anthony, you glance away, knowing what she was doing.
“We need to talk about what happened.” Tony nods, letting go of you. He puts his hands out, looking to hold Anthony as well. When Anthony spots you he lights up, a wide toothless, open mouth grin. He goes to Tony, watching him intently and with curious eyes. “Anthony.” Tony grins, Anthony squeals.
“I have no idea who would come for us.” You shake your head, looking around the room. “But they don’t just want me, they want him.” You chew your bottom lip.
“Run it down for us.” Steve folds his arms over his chest, the room shifts paying full attention.

1: full name is Miriam Gurin - she never really brings up her middle name often so nobody's really sure what it is 2: she also responds to Miri, Her Royal Highness, and Potato 3: nobody knows why she respnds to being called Potato 4: sometimes she specifically asks to be called Potato 5: there are times when she won't respond to anything BUT Potato 6: it only gets weirder from here so if you're Time Period Quick Reference:
Courtesy the lovely Erin (@incre-et-painture) we now have a handy-dandy little reference to help us all “flow with the times” without having to struggle between either spending precious time researching or winging it and hoping for the best! She actually lived in England during the period in which our game is set, so if you have additional questions about the setting she’ll be happy to help you out--
Although keep in mind that this is an alternate universe. As such, specific individual facts and historical events may be different. So don’t worry about getting bogged-down in the details; after all, this is a world in which The Cold War was replaced by The Worldwide Witchunt Wars. There probably was no Cuban Missile Crisis; there may not have even been a Space Race! We’ve left particular historical details vague enough that we can tailor them to suit whatever plot-points we all decide to develop.
So just as with the timeline, view the following as a reference guideline, not a checklist to obey!
Technology:
This is probably the most important one for us, as unlike most Potterverse games we’re actually playing in a world where your character very well might have access to the sort of technology that we take for granted in our current lives -- albeit several generations older than what we’ve got on hand now!
Most computers operate using ethernet cords to connect to the internet, laptops weigh an extremely portable 52 pounds, basically, and camera phones are cutting edge technology. The pictures taken with them are notoriously grainy at this stage and definitely not the crystal clear video we’re used to.
Most mobile phones operate on a “top up” method where you pay for minutes. They’re called track phones in the U.K. Also, most people are paying per text message sent, but it’s still a popular method of communication. You can top up your minutes in most convenience stores and by calling into your provider’s number. There aren’t any smartphones, apps, and other things like that. Public payphones still exist, although they are fading out by this point.
Travel is done by taxi, bus, and tube. Lyft and Uber do not exist. Londoners love the Tube and definitely travel that way frequently. For frequent travelers, Oyster cards are refillable cards that are similar to the Metro cards we use in the US. In fact, 2004 was the first year that Oyster cards existed. They can also be used on the bus and train, but not on taxis.
Please also remember that trains are a popular method of travel for Europeans. They’re also very reliable and a great way to get around. (As for whether people would be comfortable sharing a carriage with someone who’s got stars by their eyes, well...)

As much as it breaks my heart, Manchester United won the FA cup in 2004. (Mod Note: her Erin, maybe in this messed-up world West Ham isn’t a total lost cause? For many people, there’s nothing more delightful than a happy dog face bounding toward you on a hiking trail, free of worldly cares and the constraints of a leash. For dog lovers, watching a dog be a dog outside—sniffing around, exploring, enjoying quality time with the rest of their pack—is a welcome encounter.
But not everyone feels this way, especially on hiking trails. There are some very good reasons for this: some people are afraid of dogs and prefer to avoid them as much as they can; younger hikers and the differently abled are more prone to injury from overly excited, unleashed dogs; others simply want to enjoy a hike without having to maneuver around free-range pets at every turn on the trail.
Unleashed dogs, however, are surprisingly common on hiking trails across the nation, as is another common gripe: the proliferation of dog poop, in bags and unbagged piles, dotting the trail in significant quantities.
So, what does good trail pet etiquette (pet-iquette?) look like on trails? How can we all share the trail, and responsibly enjoy a hike with our pups? We spoke to pet owners for their take, and to the experts for their tips.
Leash Up: It’s a Courtesy (and Usually, the Rule)

On the majority of hiking trails across the nation, dogs, when they are allowed, are only permitted on leash. These regulations are usually posted near or at the beginning of a trailhead, and are generally highly visible. However, hikers often complain that dog owners aren’t complying.
Take dog owner Tanja H., for example, who was walking her 3-pound Chihuahua and 5-pound Min Pin on a neighborhood trail last summer near her home in Lake Tahoe, California. Her dogs were on a 6-foot leash, with another foot-long attachment allowing them to walk next to each other from the same handle strap. As dogs do, they stopped to smell the ground new every few steps, yanking one another from side to side. Suddenly, Tanja looked up to see a large Golden Retriever bounding toward her, tail wagging, eyes locked on her dogs.
Tanja remembers the dog was just being curious and friendly. But it was off-leash, and Tanja’s dogs weren’t as excited to make an introduction. She pulled the leash behind her to try to keep her dogs back, and with her other arm, began to try push the incoming dog away. By the time the owner, about 20 feet behind, caught up with his dog, Tanja’s arm was twisted and her shoulder dislocated as she was trying to wrangle the Golden away.
Tanja has a genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that makes her connective tissues especially fragile and found herself nursing the injury for several weeks afterward—not the kind of outcome most folks would expect after a casual hike with the pups on a neighborhood trail.

Who Let the Dogs Out?
In 2019, in Rover’s home state of Washington, Washington State Parks issued 154 violations to pet owners, many of which included violations of off-leash rules (others included dog bite reports on trails, either dog to dog or dog to human).
This sounds about right to Meghan Young, founder of a 40,000-member Facebook group for women hikers in the northwest called PNW Outdoor Women (PNWOW). Occasionally, a member will post about hiking with their dog; it inevitably leads to a heated slew of responses. “It always amazes me how we can have so many calm conversations about [hiking] but when it comes to dogs, it’s like, nope.”
There are a few reasons people get defensive about hiking with their dogs, unleashed, or otherwise, Young says. One is that for so many people, pets feel like family. When their dog’s behavior comes under scrutiny, it can feel as though their parenting technique has, too. And, of course, no one likes being told what to do.
What’s more, it’s easy to understand why some owners let their dogs off leash on trails where it is prohibited. Dogs tend to pull and stop frequently, which is especially taxing when slogging uphill, and more like walking with a distracted toddler. Many pet parents also feel their pet is the exception to the rule, as a handful of commenters in this Reddit thread claim their dogs to be.
And, while the behavior may not be malicious, the person who started the Reddit thread, user estrellaj, seems to sum up the reasons many people let their dogs off leash on a hiking trail: “I love my dogs like crazy and I don’t want them falling off a cliff or eating poison mushrooms but I also want them to enjoy the hike, sniff around, investigate things, be a dog!”
Free-Roaming Dogs Restrict Access for Other Hikers

For Denaya Shorter, a former wildlife biologist for the National Forest Service, Walker Fellow for the National Audubon Society, and author of this terrific article about hiking with dogs, off-leash dogs go beyond just being a nuisance.
Shorter, who is now the community engagement program director at the Ecology Center in Berkeley, California, works to introduce traditionally underrepresented communities in the outdoors to the joys of hiking and being outside.
“The experiences I often have in this work are with someone who has never hiked before, someone who is being introduced to hiking on trails and being introduced to these spaces for the very first time. And then, coming around the corner, there’s a dog running at them. You know, that creates a negative experience for that person, and if their first experience out on the trail is a negative one, we risk that person never wanting to come out again because of that.
“Even if your dog is the nicest, sweetest, friendliest dog in the world, for someone who is fearful of dogs or has had negative experiences with dogs, they don’t care about any of that. It’s not enjoyable or pleasant for them to walk around on a trail where they are expecting to be able to, you know, freely walk and explore, and then have a dog unexpectedly run up on them.”
Dogs Impact More Than People on Trails

Dogs, off-leash or otherwise, also have a measurable impact on wildlife and water quality. Lori Hennings is a senior natural resource scientist for the parks and nature department at Oregon Metro, which manages natural areas in the greater Portland area. As a wildlife biologist, she’s particularly interested in how dogs affect the green spaces that have been set aside in the city, like conservation areas and Portland’s crown jewel, Forest Park. She’s also a dog owner who loves hiking with her 97-pound Labrador.
It turns out there are few things you can do on a trail that are more disruptive to wildlife than bringing a dog. In 2016, Hennings conducted a literature review of 77 studies on dogs in recreation areas. One 2008 study published in the Natural Areas Journal found that deer doubled their distance from trails that allowed dogs (versus just humans), and also drove smaller animals like squirrels, rabbits, and prairie dogs away. A 2006 study published in Biological Conservation suggested that bobcats not only stay further away, but also shift their movements to nighttime in order to avoid dogs.
Compared to walkers, joggers, and mountain bikers, dogs were the single biggest factor that drove wild animals away from the trail, Hennings told me. The effects are worst with off-leash dogs. “Even I wouldn’t say keep dogs out of all natural areas, because I have a dog and I want to take him to natural areas,” she says. “But that does harm, and I recognize that.”
The Trail to the Top Is Paved With Poop
And then we need to talk about dog poop. Dog owners seem to have different methods of dealing with waste when they’re hiking. In the small, informal poll I conducted with friends, there was an even split in poop-management methods. One group of folks bagged the poop and then left it on the trail with the intention of picking it up and and putting it in the trash on the way back; another picked up the poop and carried it with them the whole hike.
Lauren G., who hikes in Arizona, says she bags her dog’s poop and leaves it on the side of the trail, but always picks it up on the way back, along with any other dog bags she sees—to pay it forward in case she misses one of her own. “It’s just easier than carrying it because I usually have a day pack and nowhere to put it,” she says.
Reddit user eatyourspinach put it more bluntly: “If a dog craps half a mile in, I’m not carrying a bag of s*** for 5.5 miles when I can just pick it up on my way back and carry it .5 miles.”
However, an anonymous Rover staffer admits that those bags can be hard to find on the way back. “I was once that person who hid a poop bag on the trail—out of sight, but where I thought I would be able to find it again—and then on my way back down, I paced for like 10 minutes where I was certain it was, but couldn’t find it.”
A few people had other methods of dealing with the doo: flicking the poop to the side, believing it would do no more harm than the rest of the animals pooping in the woods, or burying it. Of anything you could do, flicking it is probably the worst.

“It doesn’t take much dog poo getting into the water to really pollute it,” Hennings says. E. coli is particularly harmful for human health and dogs can be carriers. In fact, 13% of the non-pathogenic E. coli found in the Tualatin Basin in Oregon was DNA-linked back to dog waste according to Clean Water Services. A similar percentage (14%) was blamed on dogs in Idaho’s Lower Boise River, and 11% was linked to dogs near Puyallup, WA. Many additional municipalities such as L.A., Chicago, and Seattle have long struggled with keeping dog poo out of the water supply.
Dog waste also has nutrients that can promote algae blooms and reduce oxygen for the creatures living in the water, Hennings adds. And before you think that flicking when there’s not a water source nearby is less harmful, think again. “Everything gets into the stream eventually,” she says.
On a two-week backpacking trip where carrying your dog’s waste is unfeasible, Hennings says burying it six to eight inches underground, and away from any noticeable water source, is OK. But any trip shorter than that, the poop should be carried out. Imagine if every dog owner stopped to dig a six-by-six inch hole (the appropriate size according to Leave No Trace) for every dog poop—there would be more cat holes than trail-side trees.
Some of my hiking friends mentioned cleaning up any bags they saw on the way out, as a way of paying it forward in case they missed one of their dog’s own bags. But if you forget to clean up a bag and another benevolent hiker doesn’t grab it, you’re essentially back in a worst-case scenario—eventually, something will chew through or tear the bag, giving the poop direct access to the ground to spread possible disease. You’ve also added plastic to the mix. (Don’t pat yourself on the back for biodegradable dog bags, either, since many of them don’t break down quickly, or at all.)

The Top 3 Things to Do to When Hiking With Dogs
Hennings said if she could implore people to follow a few simple rules, it would be these. And they’re going to look familiar—they’re the rules most trails require of dog owners.
1. Keep your dog on leash: This helps to minimize the disruption to wild animals and gives you control over your dog in the presence of other hikers.
2. Keep your dog on trail: Like humans, dogs going off-trail can damage local flora and cause erosion, Hennings says.
3. Bag your dog’s waste and put it in the trash: The most respectful and ecologically sound method is to bag dog poop immediately and carry it with you. While that might sound less than desirable, a smell-resistant container like an old Pringles can, or letting your dog carry it out in her own backpack, can make things a lot more pleasant. In Other Words: Follow the Rules
“I would reiterate to dog owners, as much as possible, to just do the research on where they’re taking their dogs, because someone has already done all of the work and has determined what’s best for the dog and for the environment that you’re going to hike in,” Shorter says.
“For those dog owners who do want their dogs to be able to experience the outdoors off-leash, there are plenty of places where that is allowed, and that is permitted. And it’s just locating the places and following those guidelines!”

For many people, there’s nothing more delightful than a happy dog face bounding toward you on a hiking trail, free of worldly cares and the constraints of a leash. For dog lovers, watching a dog be a dog outside—sniffing around, exploring, enjoying quality time with the rest of their pack—is a welcome encounter.
But not everyone feels this way, especially on hiking trails. There are some very good reasons for this: some people are afraid of dogs and prefer to avoid them as much as they can; younger hikers and the differently abled are more prone to injury from overly excited, unleashed dogs; others simply want to enjoy a hike without having to maneuver around free-range pets at every turn on the trail.
Unleashed dogs, however, are surprisingly common on hiking trails across the nation, as is another common gripe: the proliferation of dog poop, in bags and unbagged piles, dotting the trail in significant quantities.
So, what does good trail pet etiquette (pet-iquette?) look like on trails? How can we all share the trail, and responsibly enjoy a hike with our pups? We spoke to pet owners for their take, and to the experts for their tips.
Leash Up: It’s a Courtesy (and Usually, the Rule)

On the majority of hiking trails across the nation, dogs, when they are allowed, are only permitted on leash. These regulations are usually posted near or at the beginning of a trailhead, and are generally highly visible. However, hikers often complain that dog owners aren’t complying.
Take dog owner Tanja H., for example, who was walking her 3-pound Chihuahua and 5-pound Min Pin on a neighborhood trail last summer near her home in Lake Tahoe, California. Her dogs were on a 6-foot leash, with another foot-long attachment allowing them to walk next to each other from the same handle strap. As dogs do, they stopped to smell the ground new every few steps, yanking one another from side to side. Suddenly, Tanja looked up to see a large Golden Retriever bounding toward her, tail wagging, eyes locked on her dogs.
Tanja remembers the dog was just being curious and friendly. But it was off-leash, and Tanja’s dogs weren’t as excited to make an introduction. She pulled the leash behind her to try to keep her dogs back, and with her other arm, began to try push the incoming dog away. By the time the owner, about 20 feet behind, caught up with his dog, Tanja’s arm was twisted and her shoulder dislocated as she was trying to wrangle the Golden away.
Tanja has a genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that makes her connective tissues especially fragile and found herself nursing the injury for several weeks afterward—not the kind of outcome most folks would expect after a casual hike with the pups on a neighborhood trail.

Who Let the Dogs Out?
In 2019, in Rover’s home state of Washington, Washington State Parks issued 154 violations to pet owners, many of which included violations of off-leash rules (others included dog bite reports on trails, either dog to dog or dog to human).
This sounds about right to Meghan Young, founder of a 40,000-member Facebook group for women hikers in the northwest called PNW Outdoor Women (PNWOW). Occasionally, a member will post about hiking with their dog; it inevitably leads to a heated slew of responses. “It always amazes me how we can have so many calm conversations about [hiking] but when it comes to dogs, it’s like, nope.”

A Blaze of Glory / Burning Man torched to climax eccentric six-day art festival in the Nevada desert

Gerlach, Nev. -- Nevada's sixth-largest city was torched Sunday night as the Burning Man spit sparks and fell over backward onto the desert floor.
About 12,000 residents of Black Rock City, the six-day encampment created for the annual Burning Man Festival, stood and cheered as fireworks lit the sky. Then they burned a huge wooden duck, a Trojan Horse and anything else that would burn. Elaborate, expensive art installations that had taken all summer to build were heaped onto a bonfire.
"All good art must be burnt, torn down or thrown away," explained Eric Wilhelm of Lake Tahoe, while watching a theme camp called the Enchanted Forest be turned to kindling.
ALL-NIGHT RITUAL
The ritual lasted all night and well into Labor Day before the hedonists packed it in for another year away from their utopia. Measured in terms of artistic and sexual freedom, there is no place else like Black Rock City, which rises out of the desert each Labor Day weekend to become the home of the Burning Man festival. The level of decadence achieved is judged illegal and immoral in most places, including Washoe County, Nev., where it is held on the dry lakebed of Hualapai Playa, midway between Gerlach and Leadville.
"It fulfilled an image I had of crazy California," said Georg Pfeiffer, a Berlin student who flew to San Jose, then bought a 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood to drive up in style. "All in all, it's been very inspirational and inventive," he said after napping on the car's roof. "In the States you can't drink beer outside or walk around naked, and here it's the opposite."
DESERTPALOOZA
Burning Man '97 started last Wednesday, and by Saturday afternoon it was a giant dusty Desertpalooza around Center Camp. A water truck came through to wet the grounds, and as it drove along spraying, people ran out of their camps and fell in behind it, ripping off their clothes as they followed the shower.
A lot of campers avoided clothes altogether. People walked around naked with their bodies painted, or without their bodies painted. That was convenient for the shaving booth, where a razor-wielding woman was glad to remove any unwanted hair, or the Temple of Atonement, where those feeling guilty could volunteer to be strapped to a cross and whipped in the sun.
When the sun finally set, the surrounding mountains turned purple and red, and the campers cheered in a wave that echoed up and down the four-mile encampment. At night, the desert twinkled with neon lights up and down Grand Boulevard. At midnight there was Grand Opera on the main stage, with hundreds performing and thousands in the audience. After the last curtain call the set was torched. By way of ovation audience -- members took off their clothes and danced around the bonfire.
"It was incredible, dazzling, awe- inspiring," said Bill Cagle of San Francisco. A roller skating rink was open until 3 a.m., and the music died down just as San Francisco artist Jim Mason started construction on his huge ice sculpture.
"I was trying to get some sleep at 4:30 in the morning, and the chain saw woke me up," explained Burning Man founder Larry Harvey. "I wouldn't exchange that for the world."
BAZAAR AND BIZARRE
The techno music finally stopped around 6 a.m. Sunday, but by afternoon Central Camp was roaring like a Middle Eastern bazaar. The only cash concessions were the coffee house and ice being sold to benefit Gerlach High School. Everything else was free. There were nude Twister and nude limbo and nude croquet. A motorized cart offered tours, with the disclaimer that "all rides one way and may end at any time."
There were several battery-powered recliner couches whipping across the playa. They were made by Fastest Furniture of Palo Alto, which also demonstrated a motorized coffee table. Operated by remote control, it would bump into someone, then the phone would ring. Someone would answer and there would be a voice on the other end, engaging in conversation. Then the table would start moving again. "It's interesting human nature, watching people follow the phone," explained operator Richard Cossel.
SLIGHTLY CARRIED AWAY
There was a bed rigged with sails, and a traveling living room the size of a Rose Bowl float. Women stood on it, dressed in fishnets and slinky gowns, waving to the crowd. One float queen got carried away, apparently dancing on top of the couch, and fell off, suffering a concussion. She was strapped onto a board and taken away by ambulance.
That was the most serious injury of the weekend. By order of the Washoe County commissioners, 60 firefighters from three departments and 18 sheriff's deputies were on duty full time. There were 10 fire trucks, which responded to about 30 calls, mostly minor.

We Came Up With A New Way To Determine Baseball’s Top Power-Speed Guy
Baseball has always prized players who can hit the ball a country mile or run like the wind. And when the same player can do both of those things, he becomes the stuff of legends — like when Willie Mays hit 36 home runs and swiped 40 bases in 1956, or when Jose Canseco inaugurated the 40-40 club in 1988.

So, who is today’s version of Mays or Canseco — the best mix of both power and speed? There is the traditional way of measuring it, but we can do a better job using MLB’s new Statcast metrics, which track the exact velocity of a ball off a player’s bat and the speed of his body around the basepaths.
Bill James originally captured a player’s combination of slugging and running by inventing a statistic called the Power/Speed Number, introduced in his 1980 “Baseball Abstract.” The formula is simply the harmonic mean of home runs and stolen bases: two times home runs times stolen bases, divided by the sum of home runs and stolen bases. “It is so crafted that a player who does well in both home runs and stolen bases will rate high,” James wrote, “and his rating is determined by the balance of the two as well as by the total.”
According to this basic accounting system, the best combo of power and speed in any single season belonged to Alex Rodriguez in 1998, when he hit 42 home runs and stole 46 bases — just the third of four 40/40 seasons in MLB history.1 The best Power/Speed Number last season belonged to Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians, who hit 39 home runs and stole 34 bases; that season is tied for 31st all-time in James’s metric.
For this season, White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson led baseball on April 18 with a 4.8 Power/Speed Number (four homers and six steals) — though that’s not really comparable to full-season numbers because the metric is a mean of two cumulative stats, meaning that it grows as the season goes on.2 A better way to get numbers that resemble full-season stats is to combine actual results from the first few weeks of the season with rest-of-season projected homers and steals from FanGraphs’ depth charts. After we did that, the top projected Power/Speed player of 2019 was Adalberto Mondesi of the blazing-fast Kansas City Royals — he’s on pace for 48 stolen bases and 22 home runs.

Mondesi certainly is fast — he ranks second in all of baseball (behind Minnesota’s Byron Buxton) in Statcast’s sprint speed metric, which tracks a player’s velocity on running plays in which he is theoretically hustling. His pop is also impressive for a speedster. If Mondesi were to hit his projections, he would be in great company: The 40/40 club’s lesser cousin, in which a player has 20 homers and 40 steals, has been done only 50 times in history and not at all since 2013. But according to Statcast, the average exit velocity of Mondesi’s batted balls is 88.9 miles per hour, which puts him in the bottom half of all qualified hitters.3
Homers and steals are proxies for power and speed, but they’re imperfect ones. If we use Statcast’s rankings as the basis for a new conception of James’s old Power/Speed Number — measuring power with exit velocity and speed with sprint velocity — it turns out that there are hitters who do an even better job than Mondesi of combining these two facets of the game.
I took every player who had at least one batted-ball event and one running event in every 1.8 games through April 184 and calculated his percentile rank in each category. Then, like with James’s original metric, I took the harmonic mean of those two values for a combined score that rewards high rankings in both power and speed.
Last season’s top power-speed player was — who else? — Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, who ranked 31st in exit velocity and 17th in sprint speed.
Of course, Trout also ranked fifth on our original Power/Speed leaderboard … but where is Ramirez in this updated version? Surprisingly, the Indians’ MVP candidate was only 85th in the new ranking, despite leading MLB in James’s metric. He had a lot more steals and homers than we would have expected from his raw physical tools. As my colleague Travis Sawchik documented last season, Ramirez made up for a lack of pure power with a concerted focus on lifting the ball in the air to his pull side, particularly to right field as a lefty hitter. (Ramirez hits from both sides of the plate.) He was also smart about picking his spots as a base-stealer, ranking seventh in stolen-base percentage with an 85 percent success rate.
But this version of the Power/Speed Number is more about measuring the skills that help lead to home runs and steals — rather than the homers and steals themselves — so players like Ramirez are out in favor of those like the Braves’ great young left fielder Ronald Acuña Jr., who consistently hits rockets off the bat and is one of the fastest runners in the sport.

Acuña was second last year and is third so far in 2019, coming up on the heels of Buxton (who might be the anti-Ramirez — he has one of the league’s highest average exit velocities despite zero home runs this season or last). But neither player ranks No. 1. That honor belongs to Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The power part isn’t shocking. Bellinger already has 11 home runs this season, second in the majors behind Christian Yelich. He’s leading the majors in an absurd array of stats, including wins above replacement, batting average, slugging percentage, hits, runs, total bases and on-base plus slugging (OPS). Through April 18, Bellinger ranked sixth in average exit velocity at 95.9 miles per hour.
But speed? According to FanGraphs, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Bellinger was rated by scouts as a “45” in the category back in 2017, with average at 50. And yet, Bellinger was up to 16th in Statcast sprint speed at 29.0 feet per second, tied with Kansas City speed-merchant Billy Hamilton (!). In just the first three weeks of the season, Bellinger already had 27 of what Statcast classifies as “competitive runs,” which contribute to his average, so it’s unlikely that the radar-trackers merely picked up a few aberrant readings. That’s particularly the case since Bellinger also ranked 35th overall in sprint speed last season, with a 28.8 feet-per-second average over 224 competitive runs.
Interestingly, the power component might be the more likely area of regression for Bellinger. Although he exploded for 39 home runs in his first 132 major league games in 2017, his power dipped last season, with an average exit velocity that didn’t rank among the top quarter of MLB hitters. He appears to have made adjustments after a classic sophomore-slump campaign, blistering the ball early this season, but Bellinger has the longer track record of having an elite sprint speed than having elite batted-ball metrics.
Bellinger is simply surprisingly fast in terms of in-game speed. And that works in concert with his crazy mashing to make him MLB’s best power-speed player in the early part of this season.

“I was very excited. I kind of didn’t want to get too crazy in there. It was tough the first round to get {my rhythm}," Valdez said. "But finally, I got the job done. I congratulate him. He’s a great fighter. I wish him nothing but the best.
“We started 2019 well. The sky’s the limit.”
Teofimo Lopez Brutalizes Magdaleno
The 2018 Prospect of the Year started 2019 off in style. Teofimo Lopez (12-0, 10 KOs) knocked out former two-time world title challenger Diego Magdaleno (31-3, 13 KOs) in the seventh, retaining his NABA, NABF, and USBA lightweight titles.
A pair of left hooks knocked Magdaleno down and out for the count.
"I take nothing away from Diego Magdaleno. We picked our shots, and we knew that in the later rounds, he'd drown in those deep waters," Lopez said. "As the competition gets tougher, you will see more of what I can do. I dissected him like a surgeon."
Commey Steamrolls Chaniev in 2
Talk about a statement. Richard Commey (28-2, 25 KOs) steamrolled Isa Chaniev (13-2, 6 KOs) in two brutal rounds to win the vacant IBF lightweight world title. He scored a knockdown with a crunching right hand in the first, knocked him down again with an uppercut in the second, and followed up with a flurry to secure the TKO.
“This is everything for me. This is what I worked so hard for,” Commey said. “Finally being a world champion, I feel like I fulfilled a destiny for me.”
Next up for Commey is a potential showdown with WBA/WBO lightweight champion and pound-for-pound great Vasiliy Lomachenko. He hurt his right knuckle in the opening round, and if receives a clean bill of health, Lomachenko will be next.
“When I hit him in the first round, I hurt my right knuckle,” Commey said. “I’m going to have to get it looked at and see what happens.”
In other action:
Middleweight prospect Janibek Alimkhanuly (5-0, 2 KOs) picked up his biggest win to date, knocking out Steven Martinez (18-5, 13 KOs) at :21 of the fifth round.
“I showed what I was capable of against a tough opponent,” Alimkhanuly said. “I am close to world title contention. It’s going to be a big year for me in 2019. This is only the beginning of my journey.”
Featherweight prospect Jason “El Alacrancito” Sanchez (14-0, 7 KOs) made quick work of Daniel Olea (13-7-2, 5 KOs), knocking out the rugged veteran at 1:35 of the second round. Olea had only been knocked out once before as a pro.
“I wanted to be patient in there. I wasn’t necessarily looking for the knockout right away,” Sanchez said. “But the opportunity came, and I took advantage of the opening.”
Pat Day (17-2-1, 6 KOs) extended his winning streak to six with a hard-fought unanimous decision against the previously unbeaten Ismail Iliev (11-1-1, 3 KOs) to retain the WBC Continental Americas super welterweight title and win the vacant IBF Intercontinental junior middleweight belt. The scores were as followed: 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94.
Bakhram Murtazaliev (15-0, 12 KOs) retained his WBC USNBC super welterweight title with a ninth-round TKO over Elvin Ayala (29-13-1, 13 KOs). An accumulation of blows forced the referee to stop the bout at 2:05.
Enriko Gogokhia (11-0, 6 KOs) knocked out Vitor Jones Freitas (15-4, 9 KOs) at 2:04 of round three, as referee Neal Young stopped the bout following a barrage of punches.
