National Wreaths Across America Day
National Wreaths Across America Day has a simple mission: “Remember fallen U.S. veterans; honor those who serve; and teach your children the value of freedom.” This important day is an annual event that takes place every third Saturday in December at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as other cemeteries in the U.S., at sea, and abroad. Wreaths are laid as family and friends remember both those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who currently serve in the armed forces.
National Wreaths Across America Day timeline
1992Surplus holiday wreaths launched a patriotic tradition
When Karen and Morrill Worcester of Harrington, Maine discovered a 5,000-wreath surplus at their   Worcester Wreath Company, they enlisted their senator's help to place the wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery as a patriotic gesture.
December 13, 2008 Congress recognized National Wreaths Across America Day
National Wreaths Across America Day came to life with a unanimous congressional vote.
2011 Major battle sites honored
Wreaths Across America coordinated a series of wreath-laying ceremonies at 750 cemeteries and major battle sites — including the Pearl Harbor Memorial, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, and 9/11 sites.
2012 Wreaths Across America hit a  milestone
Wreaths Across America laid its one millionth wreath at Arlington National Cemetery.
April 20, 2018 Honorary Patriot Award
During a gala evening, the founders of Wreaths Across America received the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Patriot Award — the highest award the organization can bestow on an individual during a special ceremony.
How to Observe National Wreaths Across America Day
Lay or sponsor a wreath
Sponsor a dog tag
Post your remembrance on social media
WAA has Location Coordinators who can direct you to a local cemetery or memorial wall for a wreath-laying ceremony. You can also  sponsor a wreath for both living and deceased members of the military.
WAA has a program to help you make or sponsor a dog tag in honor of a deceased veteran. You don't literally make the dog tags, but you may provide the written sentiment that WAA will then place on the tags. The dog tag with the veteran’s name is included, and you can physically place it on the gravestone during the annual ceremonies.
Release your inner poet with sentimental words about your loved one, living or dead. Post your remembrance with fond pictures on social media. Speak of your pride and your sadness because there are so many others who will get comfort from your words and images. You never know whose heart you will touch.
4 Things You Didn't Know About Arlington National Cemetery
It belonged to a Confederate general's wife
Former slaves had a village on the land
The JFK burial raised Arlington Cemetery's national profile
It's running out of space
After General Robert E. Lee’s wife lost the home because she couldn’t pay the taxes, the federal government seized the property and turned it into Arlington National Cemetery.
Abolitionists in 1863 helped establish a sanctuary for a group of former slaves on General Lee's former  property, but evictions in 1900 made room for the new cemetery's incoming burial plots.
Arlington didn’t gain major recognition until after President Kennedy’s burial. His wife switched the site from Massachusetts to Arlington because she believed that her husband belonged to the people.
Environmentalists and area residents are protesting an upcoming expansion involving the massive clearing of trees because it's projected that the cemetery will run out of room by 2025.
Why National Wreaths Across America Day  is Important
It remembers those who died for our freedom
It honors those who currently serve
It teaches young people the value of freedom
Placing wreaths on the graves of fallen military members is an amazing gift of remembrance. On Wreaths Across America (WAA) Day, there’s an annual wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery — where friends and family can pay a special tribute to the lives of the people who are buried there. Plus, there’s a Remembrance Tree program affiliated with WAA's Museum in Harrington, Maine. Gold Star families come together for fellowship — as well as to harvest balsam tips that are later turned into wreaths.
National Wreaths Across America Day picks an annual theme that inspires various activities. This year’s theme is “Be Their Witness” — reminding us of the importance of telling the stories of those who have died. The theme is based on the inspirational story of Michael Strobl, a Marine who served in the Iraq War. When one of his comrades fell to enemy fire, Lt. Colonel Strobl demonstrated amazing loyalty by escorting the body back to the Marine's hometown in Wyoming after the war.
Wreaths Across America Day reminds children that freedom is precious. It's also important to pay homage to those who died protecting this country. WAA offers learning tools, interactive media projects, and provides opportunities for schools and youth groups to participate in a wide variety of informational and patriotic activities.

I see Her Everyday.
"Tell me how it is, being the sun. You could walk into a room and they'd all be watching you. They'd all get down on their knees. I ask you how it is, and you say, it hurts it hurts."
The child
The golden girl
Shining bright
So bright
You couldn't look at her straight
But now I see her
Everyday
In the corner
In the dark
Sitting
And watching
Everything fall.
And all she can do
Is stare.
Oh Darling, even Rome Fell.

Joel was sweeping the snow out of his house (damn those snowmen that kept popping up, tracking snow into everyone’s houses), when someone landed behind him.
“Ah, Papa Cheeks, is it?”
Joel turned around to find a wide-eyed man standing before him. “Well, only Sausage gets to call me that- how on earth do you know it?”
“Ah, forgive me.” The man put his hand to his chest. “I am Keralis, I was one of the hermits who was in your wonderful empire lands. I stayed with Papi Sausage in Sanctuary, we had a wonderful time together.” Keralis held out a hand.
Joel shook it, squinting at the man. “You know, I don’t really remember seeing you about.”
“Ah, yes.” Keralis shook his head, cupping Joel’s hand with both of his own. “Well, if I am to be honest, and I am an honest man, I only stayed with the lovely Sausage for a week, and it was quite the pleasurable week, indeed.”
“Yeah, I bet.” Joel muttered, looking Keralis up and down.
“But then, I was called to another realm, as you all call them, and I had to go. But I am back, both with my hermits and new friends such as yourself, Papa Cheeks.” Keralis said, ending his statement with a wink. “But, as it were, I have some, ah, apologies to make. My princess is very upset with me, and I need a present to make it up to him.”
“Present? Well, you’ve come to the right god!” Joel said, breaking away from Keralis’ grasp and lead him over to a chest. “I happen to be quite good at making children. Head, armor stand, the standard stuff. And they’re gift-wrappable too, you just gotta make sure there’s a few air holes.”
“I heard of your skills from your baby daddy.” Keralis purred. “You are quite correct, I was looking for a child, as I’ve read that fixes most relationship problems.”
“You’re so right.” Joel said, lying through his teeth. He went through the whole process of making the child, including the running around and shouting. When the child was finished, Joel held them in his arms and held out his hand to Keralis.
“So, that’ll be three diamond blocks, please.”
Keralis made a tisk tisk noise. “Ah, well, Papa Cheeks, that is a mighty price… you are a guest in these lands, after all.”
Joel rolled his eyes. “Oh please, I know you hermits are all loaded. And no amount of sweet talking can change my mind. I’m not Sausage.”
“Ah, ah, ah, now, now, let’s not be rude or hasty…” Keralis said, taking a few steps forward, until he was uncomfortably close to Joel. “Look into my eyes, nothing but my eyes…”
“What are you- oh.” Joel couldn’t help himself. He looked right into those wide eyes, and they were mesmerizing. Joel couldn’t look away, didn’t want to look away. His mind felt floaty, and his jaw fell slack.
“Now, about that price…” Keralis said, voice low and dominating.
“Yeah. Free for you.” Joel found himself saying. He didn’t know why he said it, but it must have been the right thing to do. His hands moved of their own accord, handing Keralis the child.
“Clever girl….”
It was the last thing Joel heard before he passed out.
——
“Princess!”
xB scoffed. “Don’t even, Keralis. I’m still mad at you.”
“But I have a gift for you!” Keralis said cheerfully.
“Bribery?” xB asked, looking up and almost choking on his own spit in surprise. Keralis was holding a child in his arms.
“Keralis.”
“xB. My princess.”
“What is that.”
Keralis set the child down, and they went off to investigate a small slime that was bouncing around xB’s cavern.
“That is a child. For you. And I. A present to you, Princess!” Keralis spread his arms wide as if wanting a hug.
xB stared at Keralis, then at the child, then back at Keralis, mouth open. “You’re kidding, right? I- where on earth did you even get a child? Did you steal it?”
“Well, no, well, yes, okay, listen, Princess. I knew you were mad, and I heard about a new shop that had popped up from one of the empires guys, a god named Joel. He makes children out of armor stands, and very kindly made one for us!”
“Very kindly… Keralis, did you use your eyes on him?” xB asked. The child wandered back over and tugged on xB’s pants. xB picked them up without really thinking about it, bouncing them around as he stared at Keralis.
“Ah, well, yes, I did. It was expensive! And it was Sausage’s baby daddy, so I felt it was only right.” Keralis replied.
“Oh, here we go again, Sausage this, Sausage that!” xB said, rolling his eyes. He wasn’t actually mad, but he couldn’t help yanking on Keralis’ chain about it.
“Ah! Princess, I am sorry! Let me- I’ll get you another child right now!”
“No, oh my god, Keralis good lord no!” xB tried to stop him, but Keralis was already gone.
