Gotta love the 9th division, especially AEIWAM edition
I wanted to write a little tid bit about Maegawa and it got out of hand
Surviving the Gōtei 13 for Dummies

Chapter 12: The 9th Division
Sleeping bags in offices and early shifts to babysit the printing press are just some of the quirks of the 9th Division. Less temperamental than the 11th and about as stressed as the 4th, the 9th division sports quite the characters.
Chance of Survival in this division is rather high compared to others. Chance of Screwed-Up Sleep Schedules and close relationships to Coffee Kami is even higher.

1. Captain Tōsen Kaname
Current Captain of the 9th Division. Hardworking, serious and a master of paperwork management. Captain Tōsen shines with a strong sense of morality, dedication and kindness. The blind Captain of the 9th sees a lot more than most realize. Overall witty, caring and determined.
3 Helpful Tips for Dealing with Captain Tōsen
Do not speak about archiving unless you're ready to sit through a three hour presentation with slideshow
No horoscopes. Just don’t.
Misdemeanour may lead to getting your own article in the papers (this is not a good thing)

Topics Captain Tōsen is a great help with:
Surprisingly, Archiving. If you’re in need of organization regarding paperwork, books, research articles, etc., Captain Tōsen is very apt in the development and usage of organizational systems for exactly those kinds of things.
Advice. Though usually very busy, Captain Tōsen is caring and level-headed, a good listener who knows when to provide comfort and when to offer a possible solution. When in a bind, the 9th Division Captain is known for supporting his subordinates with a unique perspective and helpful, if sometimes stern advice.

2. Vice-Captain Hisagi Shūhei
Captain Tōsen’s loyal and hardworking Vice-Captain. May seem very serious and stoic but is easily flustered (f.E. by: 3rd Seat Maegawa, as seen below; Captain Matsumoto Rangiku as seen in Ch.13). Overall mature, loyal and very proper, despite his rather delinquent-like appearance.
3 Helpful Tips to Dealing with Vice-Captain Hisagi
Don't be intimidated by his appearance. Vice-Captain Hisagi is a very kind and well meaning Shinigami.
Easily put out of commission when in combination with Squad 9's 3rd Seat. If you need him distracted try to get him to 3rd Seat Maegawa. If the situation allows, Squad 10s Vice Captain Matsumoto has the same effect.
Under no circumstance bad mouth former 9th Division Captain Muguruma Kensei. Don't.
Topics Vice-Captain Hisagi is a great help with:
Guitar! Picked up one of those in the living world and his squad stopped complaining about the noise after the Ryoka Sado taught him. Now he’s good enough to teach others himself, not that he found anyone yet
Again, despite appearances, Vice-Captain Hisagi is a surprisingly good cook. Excels at making good food out of cheap ingredients, due to money being tight. 3rd Seat Maegawa swears by his food. Decent at couponing.
3. Third Seated Officer Maegawa Asahi
One of the 7 Wonders of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. Even in the 9th Division no one is sure when exactly Maegawa joined, but recalls her already being there when they themselves joined. When enquired upon this, she is quick to deflect the question and change topic. Whether this is because she’s trying to keep up the rumour herself or if there’s actually something going on is so far unconfirmed. Overall gentle and caring but surprisingly temperamental at times.

3 Helpful Tips to Dealing with 3rd Seat Maegawa:
Do not enquire about her age. If she deflects DO NOT press further - this WILL lead to injuries!
Do not intrude on her frequent sword meditations or speak ill of Zanpakutō in front of her (whyever you would do that is beyond me anyway)
Try not to breach the topic of 9th division captains. Maegawa _can_ and _will_ silence you one way or another
Topics 3rd Seat Maegawa is a great help with:
Swordsmanship - Maegawa is a surprisingly skilled swordswoman, able to take on multiple Squad 11 members at once. Her keen observation and surprising willingness to help out make her a great teacher when faced with difficulties in the way of the sword.
Sword Spirit Reconciliation and Mediation – Enamoured with Zanpakutō and their quirks, paired with an excellent ability to see things from different perspectives, Maegawa has sorted out many a twixt between Shinigami and Zanpakutō. If there’s a disagreement or problem with your sword spirit, consulting 3rd Seat Maegawa is a very good bet. She does not tolerate negligence and mistreatment of sword spirits, so don’t expect her to side with you no matter the case and don’t bother even going if you’re not ready to put some work into mending that relationship

Renji hate starts with every new bleach update it seems😤ಠ_ಠ. IR fanarts will come, that's inevitable and alright. But this is crossing the line. Whenever I see a Renji hate post, it breaks my heart. Please ship your ship happily as you usually do but why all the hatred towards him even after all this time?
Tumblr media
#1: They hate Renji so much that they cannot stand him being taller than Ichigo. As if height decides the worth and personality of a person, especially a man😐.
#2: How is Renji moronic and doesn't have intellect like Ichigo?
Him and Ichigo are both different and that's ok. Someone who survived Inuzuri, got awesome grades at academy, got into Aizen's squad, survived 11th and became 6th seat, became Byakuya's vice captain and his brother-in-law and arguably the strongest lieutenant all under 40 years is not a brainless moron. Very few people reach at that level. He is a clumsy dork and that is ok and so is Ichigo. And lets not get into the argument that Ichigo is smarter so he deserves Rukia😒🙄
#3: Why are you people so petty hypocrites? You guys have no problem sympathizing with Ulquiora or Nnoitra? One was creepy af and other was a misogynist. Its Kubo's potrayal and its justified as they are villains.
How is Renji a misogynist?? Please explain. He doesn't crib that his wife is richer than him, has a very close male companion, is a gotei 13 captain, etc. On the contrary, he always supports her and is overjoyed of her achievements and proud of her. He was never jealous around Ichigo after SS arc. How many men can do that?
#4: Rukia was forced to marry him because of Byakuya? Last time I checked, the Renruki light novel, showed them dating for three years and marrying each other out of their consent. In the epilogue, Ichigo wants to ask Orihime out. Even after all the seperation and pain, Rukia forgave Renji and allowed him to court her. She chose him during the peaceful time not Ichigo. Rukia is hard to read but she has feelings as well.
#5: He rapes his wife and daughter? 🙄🙄😒😒😒😒wtf
What burns your ass when Kubo potrays him having a happy married life with his wife and daughter? He and his wife Rukia are mutually happy with each other and had a lovely daughter as their wish. Its not like Ichigo is in darkness or in perpetual rain over that. He also has a happy family with Orihime and Kazui.
#6: They cant stand the fact that his daughter considers him her favourite person in the world. They make her favour Ichigo over her dad and 'cuck him' and if not, Ichika has no right to exist¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯(@_@).
#7: What is this practice of calling him a loser or a cuck whenever he talks to Ichigo about his wife? How does that validate your ship? Oh yes they also say that he doesn't mind this because he has accepted this. There is a difference in self respect and self confidence. ಠ_ಠಠ_ಠಠ_ಠಠ_ಠ
#8: Both wife and daughter should leave him for no fault of his own and go to Ichigo? Doesn't that make Rukia and Ichika look like scumbags? Even Ichigo should do the same to his family. Basically they want to prove that Rukia and Ichigo are immature teenagers who have raging hormones and boners to prove their great scumbag attitude.
#9: Great fanarts where Ichigo and Rukia are committing adultery front of his crestfallen face just to torture him again and again. I m sure Ichigo and Rukia aren't that insensitive. Why do you have to assassinate the characters of your main pair? According to them, he shouldn't even be in their friends circle. Has he done something so unholy?
(ノ`Д´)ノ彡┻━┻
#10: He doesn't respect Rukia's space and obsessed over her. If she had ended up with Ichigo, he would have not respected that and would have still been angry at them and never would have moved on. What is he? A child? 😒😒 If Rukia chose Ichigo, he would have let her go. Even the you can't remove him from her life since they are childhood friends. He would have definitely moved on eventually.😌👍
#11: He isolated her during academy🙂
He tried to meet her as much as possible. Its not his fault that she couldn't keep up with the curriculum and felt isolated. He was trying to move ahead so that he could manage a better life for both of them. Everyone learns differently and at their own pace. Its not her fault either nor she deserved loneliness. Its understandable that she will feel they were drifting apart.
#12: He let her go😤😐
If your best friend/crush gets adopted by a huge influential and political family, even if you are self confident, could you really stop them? What if they make life difficult for your friend? Would you be able to forgive yourself?
He didn't keep contact?
Because he couldn't. She was royalty now. Contact with commoners is forbidden unless the nobility says so. Plus she considered it a rejection/end of their friendship. So she didn't ask for him either even after the etiquette training she underwent for being a noble. Her rage and sadness is understandable and plus Byakuya was treating her like shit. But ofc this snob is forgiven.
#14: He took Rukia to his death and was abusive😑😠
Imagine if your former friend whom you secretly wish the best has been arrested for forfeiting basic responsibility. Also your job is on the line. What are you going to do? I agree that he wasn't having control over his emotions. Holding her neck and hitting her on the pole wasn't the right thing to do. If she was really hurt or being choked, she wouldn't have been able to shout. Also, he has never been abusive towards her. Yes sometimes he tends to forget their size difference in his excitement. That is his folly. Otherwise, he has never hit her even as children. That is not abuse. Rukia gets him back at that. Rukia sometimes hits her frnds. Isn't that abusive as well then?😒
Also wasn't Byakuya even more keen than him to ensure that she dies by hook or crook? Just because of some promise he made to his family. I don't feel like giving him a clean chit because of that weak excuse of a promise to Hisana causing Rukia personal and professional setbacks. Didn't we see that Renji never wanted to kill her? He entrusted her to the Kuchikis thinking she will have a better life and now her own brother is hell bent on killing her. Did no one see the shock, guilt and determination to save her on his face when she was actually going to be killed? He almost died to save her? Didn't that make up for everything?
After SS arc, both mended their relationship with Rukia. Both had a great relationship henceforth. But why always Byakuya is given clean chit? ¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯ಠಿ_ಠ
Ship your ship in peace and don't spread hate against Tite Kubo, Renji and Orihime. If you don't like it, move on and watch different anime.

Introducing side characters into the Bleach AU!
So Bleach has the 13 divisions within the Gotei 13, but it doesn’t exactly explain the specialties of each division. So! I’ve taken canon as inspiration and given each division it’s own thing they’re in charge of.
What each division is in charge of/focus on: 1. Captain-Commander aka leader, decision making 2. Assassination & Prison 3. Communication & Intelligence gathering 4. Healing 5. Kido focus aka spells 6. Law enforcement aka police 7. Internal affairs 8. Art & culture & history 9. Security force aka base guards 10. Human city/world connection #1 - Hollow patrol 11. Sword fighting only gang aka grunts 12. Research & Development (Builds) 13. Human city/world connection #2 - Plus (good spirit) patrol
Now that we have all the divisions explained, here’s where each character fits (so far):
-
(future) 3rd division member: Ranboo - not a good memory but takes extensive notes, baby of the squad, possibly a security issue but the squad loves him
4th division captain: Technoblade
4th division vice captain: Steve - emotional support polar bear, not a good guard dog but does scare the 11th division, don't question it
4th division member: Edward - tall and silent type, actual vice captain
(future) 5th division member: Tubbo - Schlatt's baby cousin he took in, uses kido for pranks, causes many explosions despite how good he is at the spells
8th division captain: Wilbur
8th division vice captain: Schlatt - long suffering, gets paperwork done, gunning for promotion to captaincy
(future) 10th division member: Tommy - thinks fighting Hollows is the coolest part of being a shinigami, has 3 dads, still hides in their offices after pranking others
11th division member: Quackity - onesided rivalry with Techno from before they joined the Gotei, mocks Techno for his 4th division allegiance but gets beat in the dirt and then threatened in medical, average fighter but training to get better, constantly challenges too strong opponents to his own detriment
12th division captain: Philza
12th division vice captain: Charlie - sociable and focuses on other parts of the division, looks up to Philza, encourages Wilbur fucking around
12th division member: Foolish - skilled architect, adorable himbo
12th division member: Pete - close to Phil and Techno, finds the coolest/weirdest shit

I’m a huge RenRuki fan so I’m stoked to find this page of glorious work and active engagement relating to this topic I could go on about! I was wondering... during their separation, do you think Renji and Rukia slept with/dated other people? One more than the other? Just wanna know your insight since you put so much depth into their relationship. I love it. (I personally like to think that Renji had a bit of a “hoe phase” especially while he was in the 11th)
Tumblr is so great, I can’t believe people actually value my opinion on this stuff (this is absolutely one of my favorite topics). Thank you so much for your kind words, and I am ecstatic for the opportunity to pontificate on this topic.
Just to clarify, if you were asking for my opinion on the source material, and I had to “support my opinion” or “cite references”, my actual interpretation of canon is that no, they were absolutely celibate during this time. Rukia had a cute li’l crush on her vice-captain and Renji probably went on one very heterosexual date with a girl once and felt bad about it for a year.
When I am being generous and world-buildy, I like to consider the fact that shinigami are souls. They do not have bodies or hormones and so I can get behind the idea that bonds of family and friendship are far more important than sex and attraction, because those are fundamentally earthly concerns. In the hands of a thoughtful, talented, preferably ace writer, this could be an incredibly interesting setting but that is, uh, not consistent with any other aspect of Soul Society, including the fact that they sell sexy calendars of the captains, plus Kubo took the time out to canonically remind us that Soul Reapers poop and have babies.
So, instead, here is the horny Polynya headcanon version, which is what you probably wanted anyway. I’m putting it under a cut because it gets a little R-rated, and also it’s hella long, but the short answer is Renji absolutely had a slutty phase.
Some people headcanon that Rukia and Renji were actually in a romantic relationship at the time of her adoption, and if that’s your reading of it, and you want to believe that they waited for each other out of loyalty, I suppose I can get behind that.
I don’t think they were together, though. I waver from time to time about how physical their affection got in Rukongai, but I think they fell in love and never admitted it. When their last friend died, they both became absolutely terrified of losing the other, so they came to the Seireitei in order to get strong and not die. I don’t think Rukia ever wanted to be Soul Reaper, to be honest. Given the strength of her principles and her particular moral code, I do think she is a great one, in the style of “I would never want to be in a club that would have me in it.” Consistent with Oetsu’s trial in the Royal Realm, I think Renji was born (died?) to be a Soul Reaper and Rukia knew this and also that he would never go unless she went with him. She absolutely regarded getting him into Shin’ou as saving his life and getting him where he belonged.
Once they were in school, I think they had to keep their distance socially if they wanted to succeed. The Gotei runs entirely on nepotism, and Rukongai kids who don’t adapt are looking at Squad 11 or 4, best case scenario. Even if they were aware of their feelings for each other, they had to play it cool for now. Renji is a long-term planner, and I think he set his sights on pass tests -> graduate -> get Gotei position -> live happily ever after with Rukia. Rukia is not so good at long term planning, and also not so good at formal education and I think she just got depressed and salty, especially because she was never sure if he actually returned her feelings or not. I absolutely think that when she accepted the adoption, she assumed she was leaving Renji to his live his best life, and at least going somewhere she was wanted.
Even though we, the reader, are presented this story as a tragedy, in many ways, this is exactly what they had hoped for. They lived. That’s it. That’s all they ever wanted. Renji got to have his perfect job and Rukia got to live in indescribable luxury. They are both so, so happy about this and have no idea why their faces are so wet right now.
The last thing either of them wants, to be honest, is the other one pining after them. They have each accepted trudging through their life in misery because they think they have made the other happy. There’s a scene were Byakuya shows up to the Squad 6 holding cells to announce to Rukia that he has no plans to save her, and Renji looks just devastated, not just because Rukia’s gonna die, but because he thought he was sending her to happiness.
Also, on a meta level, I am middle aged, and for me, the romance of only ever being with one person is boring as hell. The idea that they would get together and lose their virginity to each other just makes me indescribably tired. Childhood-friends-to-lovers isn’t actually that interesting to me-- it is the separation itself that makes it spicy-- that they went off and had other life experiences-- and sexual experiences, and came back found that they loved this person even more now.
I headcanon Rukia as very horny and pro-sex in theory, but has is a big problem of opportunity. On one hand, I think she and Byakuya have a firm don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy, where as long as she stays out of the gossip columns, he doesn’t care what she does. On the other hand, though, I feel like secret affairs are kinda hard to manage, especially since she entered the noble network late in life. Anyway, I figure she’s had a number of casual affairs, mostly with other nobles who are invested in not getting caught, and also do not have any interest in any sort of emotional attachment. I think Rukia is absolutely bi, and mostly slept with ladies because they were more likely to be discreet, although there was probably a dude or two in there somewhere. Rukia only has two relatinship modes-- detached and ride-or-die, and she was very careful to keep everything in category 1, because she had no expectation of ever having a functional relationship that would go anywhere; no one she was actually interesting in being with would ever pass Kuchiki muster. I think she tried dating a nice boy from Squad 8 once, and everyone in Squad 13 thought it was the cutest thing they had ever seen. They went on three dates and never kissed and Rukia hated it and never did it again. She let herself have a huge crush on both Kaien and Miyako Shiba, because she was absolutely sure it could never go anywhere, and that definitely played into her devastation at their death. She may have had some Bad Decisions Sex in the wake of that, but I think for the most part, the affairs became more trouble than they were worth, and she’s been on a pretty long dry spell around the time we meet her.
That being said, I think Rukia is a lady who takes care of herself, if you get my drift. I think she has an extensive collection of erotic romance novels, a good imagination, and Kuchiki money worth of self-service sex toys. I think by the time she and Renji actually hook up, she has decades worth of pent up fantasies, and fortunately for her, he is intrigued by her ideas and would like to sign up for her newsletter, please and thank you.
Speaking of Renji, let’s talk about Renji! After Rukia left, I think Renji Made Some Plans and buckled down into a long, hard haul of Making Himself Worthy of Seeing Rukia Again. He made it through school, he went into Squad 5 with Izuru and Momo and... lost 90% of his momentum. This is exactly the scenario of the kid who busts ass through college to follow their dream, and then two years into their dream job, realizes that they are going to be formatting pivot tables in Excel for the next 15 years before they get to do anything remotely interesting. At this point, Renji is young, hot, bisexual, inked, and not very satisfied with his day job, and Thus Began the Ho Period.
Momo and Izuru hate this. They hate it so much. They have both had big crushes on Renji since school and they are right there. It wouldn’t be so bad if he would find a nice sweet partner that they like, but no, he just goes off on weeknights and comes home reeking of alcohol and covered in hickeys and ruining his career even though his job performance is actually fine. The fact is, even though he has always acted like he doesn’t know, of course he knows they like him, he’s not dumb, but Izuru and Momo are the type of people who mate for life, and Renji absolutely knows how badly he would break their hearts. He can’t even talk about it with them, all he can do it pretend like he doesn’t notice and hope they’ll realize what trash he is. He still loves Rukia and will always love Rukia and has made peace with the idea that he will likely never get to be with her-- he’s still working towards it because he must, because it would kill him to give up, but he knows that he’s only good for a fight or a fuck and not much else. Their friendship gets increasingly strained until Momo and Izuru can’t understand anything he does and he can’t stand them caring so damn much.
Anyway, this escalates in deciding to leave Nice, Respectable Squad 5 entirely, and joining the French Foreign Legion Squad 11. Squad 11 respects a man’s right to wallow, and Renji takes a swan dive to rock bottom. His only saving grace is his training with Ikkaku, which he takes absolutely seriously. Yumichika eventually takes interest in Renji, and teaches him how to take care of his hair and have standards. Yumichika and Ikkaku realize that if they can make him Functional, they can get him to do paperwork, so they help him beat the Sixth Seat and let him start hanging out with their friends.
Renji is still sleeping around at this point, but at least he’s sleeping around with a better class of people. I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, Polynya, has Matsumoto ever pegged Renji? (You probably weren’t actually thinking that) The answer is yes, Matsumoto has absolutely pegged Renji, and she was utterly delighted to give Rukia tips later on. Rukia does not begrudge Renji his slutty period in the least, because she knows that, given the opportunity, she probably would have been Worse, and also, he’s slept with 3/4 of the Gotei and picked her out of all of them, and also, he’s just incredible at oral.
The slutty phase tapered off when Renji had a bit of an actual relationship with Shuuhei. First of all, they are absolutely each other’s types, physically. Secondly, Shuuhei (whom I headcanon as significantly less pathetic and more bisexual than in canon) would be able to handle being in a relationship that is fun and supportive, even if it’s not destined to last. He is well aware that Renji is devoted to beating Captain Kuchiki and that he’s never going to truly be able to be in love with anyone until he gets some closure with Rukia, but that’s a long way off, and Shuuhei’s got his own baggage, who doesn’t have baggage? So they sleep together and go to the bar together and hold hands sometimes and tool around on the motorbike and wear a lot of leather and Hisagi cooks Renji food and Renji eats it and they’re pretty happy for a few years.
Eventually, around the time he gets serious about trying to make vice-captain, Renji starts to hang out with Izuru and Momo again, who have recently made vice-captain themselves, and are really happy to see that he’s gotten himself back on the wagon. He’s started thinking about Rukia a lot again, and he’s feeling a little bad because he loves Shuuhei, but he’s not in love with Shuuhei, and also, Shuuhei and Izuru have started looking at each other when they go out drinking, so Renji claims he needs to concentrate on the vice-captain’s exam and they have some nice breakup sex and then he sliiiiiides on outta there like a good bro and is very happy for his friends when they start hooking up.
Did that cover it? Boy, I had a lot of thoughts on that, huh? To summarize: They both saw other people. Renji had way more sex, just a tremendous amount of sex, but always carried a torch for Rukia (not really intentionally, I think he would have liked to be able to get over her, he just couldn’t), whereas I think she really did give up on him for a while.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, please read my fanfiction, where I am constantly hinting at all this stuff, I swear I will eventually finish that Squad 11 story.

Bleach, From Pilot to Ch. 423: Things I Forgot Or Were Excluded From The Anime
Turns out I had forgotten a lot of things tho they might not seem that important. Anyway, the list is long so I’ll keep it under the cut. It’s a bit messy but I was just writing it as I was reading and then I somehow expected myself to remember what I was talking about. Posting it for anybody else who could use the reminder.
Please keep in mind that I’m pretty sure the translation I was reading wasn’t a 100% correct but I couldn’t be bothered to find a better one. Seems like it improved later on but I’d still take it with a grain of salt. (Like I’m pretty sure this translator couldn’t read hiragana properly, and some names were really messed up.)
- I did not know there was a pilot chapter so yeah... that entire thing I guess. - Orihime being that open about her crush from the beginning - Orihime’s parents being such cruel people - Orihime’s hairpins being a gift from Sora - The backstory of the mod souls - Chad’s crazy about cute things - Keigo is from Naruki City, not Karakura - Mizuiro being really popular with girls - Renji and Byakuya with weird hoods, idk if that was part of the anime and so far there’s been a part from the anime that wasn’t in the manga (The part with Ichigo seeing Rukia fight a hollow in town before she comes into his room) - Orihime is bad with electronics - Ishida is poor - Tatsuki told Orihime that she is probably at the level of a black belt in karate (I don’t know if she was honest about that but she said it) - Orihime is really dang smart - I forgot Nemu was technically Mayuri’s daughter -Also Mayuri is awful, he belongs in worst dad club with Isshin (I also didn’t remember Isshin being SUCH a creep but I guess I forgot to write that earlier. Or I just decided not to since reviewing this list afterwards I realize I left some other creepy things out.) - Mayuri can turn into liquid - Zanpakutou Materializing Dolls, and other artefacts. So many artefacts. Never to be mentioned or used ever again. - Kira feeling super guilty over raising a sword at Hinamori. - Orihime just chilling with Yachiru, Ikkaku, and Yumichika after the was separated from Uryuu. Oh and Zaraki’s there too. - Hisagi having been accepted as a shinigami before he passed the exams, expected to become a seated officer - Rukia idolised Kaien’s wife - That Komamura was that loyal to Yamamoto - I remember Kenpachi fighting Komamura and Tousen, not picking a fight with Komamura, Tousen, Iba, and Hisagi. Neither did I remember Ikkaku and Yumichika joining in, it’s just entirely gone from my memory - Byakuya’s scarf is a really expensive heirloom. - Byakuya was really cold in the beginning, supposedly not caring about his subordinates (idk if he really changed later on but this stood out to me in the moment. Also speaking of Byakuya, I think he seemed older to me when watching the anime because of the voice.) - Really I had forgotten a lot about the animosity between Byakuya and Renji - Rukia doesn’t refer to Gin as “Captain Ichimaru” and he doesn’t mind since they’ve “known eachother for so long”. Apparently she’s deathly afraid of him. - Kaname got his zanpakutou from the grave of the lady he liked? I’ve always wondered how people get their zanpakutous anyway ‘cause I don’t think Zaraki had any training and I’m pretty sure it’s the same sword he had when he met Yachiru, yet Zangetsu comments on how the sword is crying. (I’m also curious about if people could potentially wield other zanpakutous, which I think is a thing in the quincy arc but I’m talking like... normal people. I think it’d be neat since there’s already two people that have just... picked up a zanpakutou before they even became shinigamis.) - Rikichi! He’s such a big fan of Renji! He got Hanatarou out of jail just to help Renji. He didn’t only get him a new uniform but also a hair tie and a bandana. I’m a little sad that he never seems to show up ever again? (At least I don’t remember him being in the quincy arc but that’ll have to be it’s own list I guess) - Ukitake and Kyouraku stopping and destroying Soukyoku - Kiyone calling Isane sister. - Soifon getting ready to take out Kiyone and the other vice-captain. - Kyouraku being praised for being the best at seeing the true character of anyone he meets, and Ukitake always being the centre of a crowd although (frail, but affable and kind) - Yamamoto thinking of Ukitake and Kyouraku as sons - Katen Kyoukotsu and Sogyo no Kotowari are the only zanpakutous that exist in pairs (allegedly) (I don’t remember why I wrote allegedly but I had some thought behind it......) - Soi Fong’s name was Shaolin Fong until she inherited her grandmother’s code name. - Soi Fong not being angry with Yoruichi because she ran away, but because she didn’t take her with her - Iba having been part of the 11th division, but becoming Komamura’s vice-captain (supposedly for his mom) - Iba wanting to get a chance to fight Ichigo - Byakuya only showing Senkei Senbonzakura Kageyoshi to people he wants to kill personally, Ichigo being the second person. I can’t recall if the first person was ever revealed? - Kira going along with the scheme and leading away Hitsugaya and Matsumoto from the Central 46 chambers. He was told they wouldn’t do anything to Hinamori - Hinamori joined the Gotei 13 because she admired Aizen, which would imply she met him before the soul burial training accident, but idk if that’s a translation mistake - Unohana confronting Aizen in the Central 46 chambers and calling him a treacherous reprobate - How Kyoka Suigetsu works. I forgot that for it to work on someone they need to see the release, and that after that the person who saw it will be completely hypnotised every time he releases it from then on. - Aizen was certain that he could use all three of Kira, Hinamori, and Renji back when they first met, but Renji was problematic so he was sent on to squad 11 while Kira and Hinamori were made Aizen and Gin’s vice-captains - Ichigo and Renji trying to fight Aizen together - Ichigo being a fucking monster! Who stays conscious after having their stomach cut open like that? In the anime it was just a really bad slash but since the manga is a but more graphic I’m only now like “oh wow that is really fucking bad” - There were names for the four basic types of combat for shinigamis. Zanjutsu(sword skills), Hakuda(hand-to-hand combat), Hohou(foot work), and Kidou. - Hollowfication is brought up this early, but I guess it makes sense because he’s explaining the Hougyoku. - Urahara, not Aizen, hid the Hougyoku inside Rukia. - Urahara was exiled for creating an intractable gigai? I don’t think so Aizen, but okay. Also he was trying to turn Rukia into a human soul. Hm. - Komamura coming in to destroy Aizen mid-monologue. Thank you. (After reading Ichigo’s last fight with Aizen I am so tired of him talking aaahhhhh!) - All the gate guardians except for Jidanbou are traitors, Kuukaku shows up with Jidanbou (was this in the anime???) - I remember Ichigo hanging out with squad 11 after the whole Aizen thing, but I did not remember Iba being there too which is nice. They didn’t get to spar tho. - Matsumoto and Kira getting drunk and venting about Gin, though it’s portrayed pretty comically. Matsumoto proceeds to invite pretty much anyone who passes by, except for Kyouraku. - Ryuuken is part of the shitty dad club. - Shinigami Isshin was revealed pretty much right after Shinji, I didn’t remember it being so early. - Also I didn’t remember the protection charm either but hey it worked. - Did- Did Orihime really only get to use Tsubaki ONCE?? - Also that entire fight with Yammy and Ulquiorra is just so much bloodier than in the anime - That moment when Ichigo tells Chad to leave D.Roy to him and Chad runs away, that hurt, ow my heart - Keigo being there to watch Ikkaku fight Eduardo. Also Keigo having a chat with Yumichika. - Ikkaku losing his molars in the fight with Eduardo is. - Yumichika going “oh and btw, make preparations for Ikkaku’s funeral” - Flashback about Ikkaku fighting Zaraki in the past. - Ikkaku being determined to fight and die under Kenpachi’s command. - Ururu kicking Ilfordt in the face- I mean Ururu going in to exterminate Ilfordt. - References to Toshirou’s bankai being incomplete. - Shawlong being the first arrancar to be created. (Allegedly? Supposedly? Succesfully? It depends on a lot, it’s a bit of an assumption.) - The power limit that is placed on captains and vice-captains when they go to the world of the living is symbolised by the division’s symbol. Oh and it takes away 80% of their power. Motherfucking damn bitch Ikkaku. Also good job Rukia. (I don’t remember what these last two sentences are refering to tbh) - Tatsuki watching the fight (I’m assuming the first) between Ichigo and Grimmjow, or at least part of it. - I guess I forgot to mention this earlier but Orihime being jealous of Rukia and her relationship with Ichigo - Tousen really not liking Grimmjow because he causes discord - Ichigo trying the beat the answers out of the Vaizards. - Goddamn Ichigo has a lot of attitude. - Urahara telling Orihime that she would be a burden in battle and Rukia talking to her afterwards. Orihime and Rukia need more talks. - Orihime getting kidnapped by Hiyori. - Hachi having similar abilities as Orihime. - Hachi also suggesting against Orihime fighting the war. - Orihime being so determined to fight. Goddamn I wish Tsubaki wasn’t her only way of doing damage. Give her one of those funky artefacts for fuck’s sake. - Yumichika not getting along with “Fujikujaku”. - The trees in Hueco Mundo are made of something quartz-like - Ulquiorra complimenting Orihime on her looks (Tbh I’ve forgotten about this scene again but I don’t think I intended to lie to my future self so I’m assuming it might’ve been something vague) - Orihime planning to reject the Hougyouku with her powers to destroy it, why don’t I see more about that?? - Wonderweiss being fond of Tousen. - Szayel sending out the execution squad after Dordoni - Only Grimmjow ever uses Gran Rey Cero (Idk if I ever really thought otherwise but it’s on the list so I guess it’s a confirmation I wanted to make) - Tesla threatening to destroy the Shun Shun Rikka - Nnoitra using Nel as a shield when Ichigo attacks at one point - Nnoitra and Neliel didn’t even fight after he tore off Dondochakka and Pesche’s masks in the flashback wtf. Now that I think of it, I’ve never seen manga screenshots of that part so I guess it’s only in the anime. Well that’s disappointing. Then what did Szayel even do? (Still sad they don’t fight more in the manga, bluh. Also I’m still not sure what Szayel actually did.) - Nnoitra thinking it a shame that they (him and Neliel I think) won’t get to fight again. - Mayuri observing Uryuu through bacteria, and Uryuu calling him out for violating human rights - Szayel rebirthing himself from Nemu, wtf. I’m not sure if that was in the anime. (Okay it was, she just didn’t get straight-up pregnant) - I also forgot about Szayel taking over Konjiki Ashisogi Jizou - The Jesus Szayel and Baphomet Mayuri chapter pages were new to me - Mayuri to Nemu: “Good job, keep suffocating Uryuu with your tiddies. If he dies, he dies.” - Nnoitra, after releasing Santa Teresa: “Kinda sexy, isn’t it?” (I don’t trust this translation a 100% but what was written was “I look sexy, right?”) - And Zaraki responding with “your reiatsu is making me hard…” - The Living World as seen through the Garganta in Las Noches is upside-down - Hikifune and the Royal Guard being mentioned during Turn Back The Pendulum - Hiyori looking up to Hikifune as a mother - Urahara being Commander of the Detention Unit in the 2nd Division, and the unit keeping people who wanted to withdraw from the Gotei 13, not just criminals. - Urahara making Mayuri his Vice Captain in the research institute - Barragan’s fraccions having packed together his throne and brought it with them - I can’t believe Charlotte’s magical girl scene was only in the anime but I suppose it makes sense - Hisagi’s fight with Findor  was also shorter in the manga which is… kind of a shame? Idk it was pretty well made in the anime, but I guess it’s because they were just coming back from a break and all. - Hisagi and Kira stopping Yumichika from rushing in after Ikkaku was beaten, Komamura stepping in to take care of the arrancar… whose name I’ve already forgotten once again. - Iba calling Ikkaku out for not using his bankai and punching him in the face. Good. I like Ikkaku but the pillar did get destroyed because of him so it was a pretty bad move. - Hinamori making a kidou net - Kira used to be in the 4th division, did I already write that? - The Gran Rey Cero being forbidden to use inside of Las Noches but leave it to Grimmjow not to care about any of that - Kyouka Suigetsu’s ability can be cancelled by grabbing the blade. - They sent Aizen to Avici, or I guess a prison named after Avici - Yamamoto scolding Byakuya, Shunsui, and Kenpachi for losing their captain’s haori and they proceed to insult it - They actually mention Mayuri going back to Hueco Mundo

Renji’s First Day
or the first meeting with the glorious Seaweed Ambassador.
((This short story is inspired by @kaickos adorable artwork in this specific post.))
English isn’t my first language. Also first time I’m actually writing for a fandom, be nice. Plz ;v;
                                                              ---
Today was the day. After passing the qualifications, today would be Renji’s first day as the vice-captain of the 6th Division, and he was a nervous mess. He had been waiting for this moment for years. Finally he would be close to the man he wanted to surpass and maybe ... Maybe he could pretend to Rukia’s friendship once more.
These were the thoughts that were racing through his mind as he walked toward the barracks of his new division. He hadn’t slept at all that night, nervous as he was. In front of the main gate, a man was waiting for him, waiving and smiling.
-” Ah ! Ah ! Here comes my successor ! “ he said, slamming his hand on Renji’s shoulder. “I’ve been waiting for you, let me show you around. Name’s Ginjiro Shirogane by the way, but I’m sure you already know that.” he added, laughing.
Shirogane was a man of average height, bald for the most part, but with a luxurious mustache. He was what you call a bon vivant. Generally friendly, but knew how to be serious when he needed to.
- “ There you have the training grounds, over there the infirmary. You also have the men’s dorms this way and the women’s on the other side.” he explained while Renji was trying his hardest to retain the information Shirogane was bombarding him with.
- “Over there are the women’s shower room, you’re not allowed to go peeking !” he added, giving Renji the stinky eye before erupting into laughter again, knowing full well he embarrassed him.
While all the barracks were virtually the same in every division, the 6th was arranged very differently of what he was used to in the 11th. For one, there were no wooden swords scattered everywhere and no bottles of sake either.
Before realizing it, they stopped in front of the massive wooden doors of the Captain’s office.
-” And here, you have the Captain’s office. He’s not here right now so don’t be so nervous. Despite having your own office, trust me, you’ll spend a lot of time in this room too. Captain Kuchiki’s private quarters are down this corridor but I wouldn’t recommend going there, unless there’s an emergency. Follow me, I’ll show you your office.” he added waving for Renji to come after him.
Renji took a deep breath before opening the doors to his new office and a new beginning. The atmosphere in this room was warmer than in the captain’s. The sun shone softly on the desk near the wide window in the back of the room. On both sides of the walls, massive shelves with years if not centuries of paperwork. On the right side of the wall, a coffee table with two couches around it.
-”As the vice-captain, you are the link between the captain and the subordinates. If they have any issues or need to talk to someone, you are the first person they’ll come to. You’ll probably spend more time talking and helping your subordinates on these couches than relaxing, I tell you !” Shirogane said after following Renji’s glance. “That’s part of the job.”
Nodding at Shirogane’s explanation, Renji noticed another desk, right by the door, on the left side of the room.
-”And what about this desk ? Is it for the 3rd seat ?” he asked, pointing at the desk.
Shirogane’s face darkened as he suddenly looked upset.
-” No...” he sighed. “You see, this is the desk of the vice-captain that was there before me, Kuchiki Soujun-dono.”
-”Kuchiki ?” asked Renji, surprised.
-”Yes, Byakuya-dono’s father. A great man and a kind soul. Wasn’t cut for the army but he was a great vice-captain nevertheless. You know how the 13th Division never got over Shiba’s death ? It’s kinda the same here in a way. Kuchiki Ginrei-dono has never been able to let anyone else other than his son use this desk so when the Central 46 kept pushing for him to promote a new vice-captain, he just got a new desk so this one would be left alone. When he retired, it just stayed that way. I please ask you to not use it. The Captain hasn’t said anything about it but in the 40 or so years he’s been in charge, the desk hasn’t moved either. It is as it was the day Soujun-dono died.”
.
.
.
It was now 22:00pm and Renji was alone in his new office, finally able to catch his breath after one hell of a day. A bunch of the squad members came to pay him a visit throughout the day, some were newbies fresh out the academy, others had been in the division for over 200 years already. He quickly noticed that while the newer members paid no mind to his predecessor’s desk, the older members usually tapped it quickly before exiting the room, like a small ritual.
As he was getting out of the room to get a well deserved night rest, he realized that some paper was sticking out of the last drawer. He grabbed it thinking it would be some old paperwork but instead, he was greeted by a paper full of scribbles done in bright and colorful pens. The drawing was a stick figure wearing black and some sort of white cape with the word “grandfather” beneath it. “Is this drawing Captain Kuchiki’s doing ?” Renji thought, chuckling. Curious and amused, he opened the drawer.
There were so many drawings it was a miracle that drawer was able to be closed at all. There were many representing, probably as it was mostly stick figures, a young kid and an adult man, both wearing the shinigami uniform, smiling with zanpakutos in their hands. What was common on all of them, was a drawing of a weird greenish creature with black dots for eyes, impressive eyebrows and a ravishing smile, the Seaweed Ambassador, as noted in the caption. “What even is that thing ...” Renji thought as he kept browsing through the drawings.
The sound of footsteps coming closer brought him back to reality as he rushed to put everything back where it belonged.
-”Ah Captain, good evening !” he quickly said, nervous. “Did you need something ?”
-”You weren’t there for it but next week the Gotei 13 have a festival and we’re going to all sell different things. Here’s our division’s design for treats, please forward it to the group who volunteered to make them. That’s all.”
-”Ah, yes, of course!” replied Renji, nervous and bowing as Byakuya was already gone.
Renji looked at the paper his Captain left him with. The final design for the treats.
Seaweed Ambassador.
-”Seriously ??”

I was wondering if I could get some headcanons on shinigami and their squads? We've seen how Renji & co. have gone through the academy being taught had, kido, & combat but how do you think shinigami are placed into their divisions? Do they just choose themselves? Are captains given a list of potentials and give out "recommendation letters" like colleges? Do they apply or is it based off skills? I can't remember if this has been explained in Bleach already but if it has feel free to ignore this!
Meant to get this out yesterday but I went to Disneyland and forgot to add it to the queue before then! This was so much fun though I love writing some more meta-like content too~ :D Admin S
Ok so some of this we do get in canon (in Color Bleach+: The Bleach Official Bootleg) but I’ll add my own stuff too! I love talking about this kind of stuff even if it came up in canon :D
So we know for sure that each Division advertises their division to Academy students who decide which division they want to apply for (or even if they want to apply for the Kido Corps rather than the Gotei). For example, Momo was planning to apply for the Kido Corps initially - if I remember correctly she changed her mind after Aizen saved her and Renji and everyone.
It also seems like it is ultimately someone in the division’s choice. I’m pretty sure I remember that Kyouraku deliberately made sure that Nanao ended up in 8th after she applied for 8th.
I think this is about all we know canonically so my idea from there is that they must apply to a number of divisions. Once they graduate the Academy they have to go into Kido Corps and Gotei (they’re not exactly going to let them lose in Rukongai) so they must have to be accepted somewhere and those who aren’t good enough to graduate either get held back or turned out on the streets (maybe even prison like the Maggots Nest if they’re dangerous enough).
Something else worth noting is that those who retire from the Gotei have to give up their zanpakutou - but from what I can tell it doesn’t seem like Academy students are expected to have shikai by graduation. Again an example is that Izuru originally joined 5th and then 4th but moved to 3rd when he got shikai and found it wouldn’t be any use to 4th division work.
Probably a seated member (and I would think pre-SS arc when things were calmer) a vice-captain would look through the applicants. They would probably also have information such as test scores and reports written by teachers detailing what of the four disciplines they’re best at and how strong they are etc. As I mentioned before probably everyone has to join a division so as long as it’s felt they’ll fit in they’re probably offered a place.
It would seem to me that places like 3rd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 13th are more ‘generic divisions’ - but this could also be that we didn’t find out any specialities about them.
1st as the head commander’s division is probably for those with very good scores already.2nd is obviously in charge of stealth and discipline and such.4th is healing so while I imagine many join, it probably has a high turn over depending on shikai abilities. 5th, I believe has mentioned doing well at kidou but also given the front Aizen was putting on - they probably accepted most anyone.6th - taking some sort of pride in your work, self or being in agreement with such philosophies is probably kind of required.11th - obviously we know they give no fucks about kidou and don’t really want people using it, also you have to be strong.12th - SCIENCE! But also experiment fodder - sorry newbies.

Some stupid Ichiruki Squad 13 + Hitsugaya shenanigans I’ve been thinking abt since yesterday night
- Honestly once Ichigo makes VC squad 13 just PWNS paperwork. Rukia’s got so many years of managing paperwork for the entire squad under her belt since even as a VC she was taking on Ukitake’s workload as well, and Ichigo’s a nerd who always hands in his homework on time. Their paperwork is IMPECCABLY neat, alphabetized, colour-coded, and EARLY
- Squad 13 is Nanao’s favourite squad because as VC of the first she has the undesirable job of chasing up everyone’s paperwork and you would NOT believe what a mess the other squads are
- She legit just doesn’t expect anything from 11th. like if they try to hand her paperwork she just turns it down. she’ll do the paperwork for that squad HERSELF at least that way she knows it’s NOT ALL STUCK TOGETHER WITH COTTON CANDY YOU SAVAGES
- Surprisingly, the other squad that’s PARTICULARLY shitty with paperwork is 2nd. You’d think uptight soi-fon would be heinously organized, and she is, but paperwork just doesn’t rank on her list of things to pay attention to (which, fair. I’d be like that too if I headed an assassination corps). She vaguely expects Omaeda to deal with it since that’s what Vice Captains are for, but Omaeda vaguely expects his third seat to deal with it, and so on
- ofc, the reigning champion of paperwork used to be 10th, thanks to Hitsugaya and insomnia, but once Ichigo made VC it was..... game over. Hitsugaya is a perfectionist and also sleepless, but he’s just one kid versus another ice-type perfectionist and a nerd. If anything, Rangiku is a handicap.
- He initially like.... offered Rukia a lot of help during her first few weeks as Captain, esp in regards to paperwork, bc all he really remembers about Ichigo is his fighting style (break everything and then we’ll see) and the fact that he’s Shiba-Taichou’s son, and if he’s anything like Shiba-taichou was then he PITIES Rukia. She has a USELESS vice captain and he knows how that feels so he better give her all the help he can
- and then Nanao announces her new favourites at the next Captain’s meeting and he feels SO BETRAYED
- ???? ????????? ????? Kurosaki???? actually does????? his paperwork???????????
- Life is so unfair why did he get the useless Kurosaki
- Anyway, thanks to being Nanao’s favourite, squad 13 has a much bigger budget than they used to. tbh they need it. Ichigo’s doing kido training and they blow up a training ground every second week
- Also the fact that like... you can tell Ichigo actually respects most of the Captains a fair bit, and despite his appearance he’s actually a pretty polite kid? He’ll affix ‘-san’ to most people’s names, unless 1) he’s fought them (ex. Byakuya, Ikkaku) 2) they’re on no-honorifics terms with someone he’s fought (ex. Yumichika) 3) they’re family or 4) they’re OBVIOUSLY his age or younger. Anyway yes so he’s respectful of the captains, mostly.... except he treats hitsugaya like a literal child about the same age as his sisters and that’s so funny to me
- he doesn’t even call him by his last name he literally calls him toshiro look. look that’s so CUTE
- He’ll call Rangiku ‘Rangiku-san’ but he’ll call her Captain (who Rangiku speaks using formal language to) Toshiro this is so funny to me
- Anyway so yeah I feel like Hitsugaya has........ Grievances against 13 squad ever since Ichigo makes VC. They best him at paperwork, the VC treats him like a kid (he has a conspiracy theory that treating him like a kid is a squad 13 tradition, started by Ukitake)......
- Except he can’t actually, like, outright show his annoyance because Rukia is so polite and formal to him. She still speaks to him with formal language even after her promotion because Rukia’s just Like That
- Except except even THIS is causing him troubles because every time Rukia talks to him like he’s still her superior he can FEEL Kuchiki Bykuya glaring holes into him like ‘she’s the same rank as you now how dare you make her speak with formal language while you still speak to her with informal language. Pick one and stick to it’
- Listen hitsugaya is as happy as the next person that Kurosaki averted the end of the world but he REALLY can’t deal with 13 squad ever since Kurosaki joined. He’s getting a stress migraine.
- that’s it for now but hitsugaya + squad 13 ichiruki is SO cute my heart is crying thinking abt it. Ichigo who treats Hitsugaya like a kid, Rukia who’s respectful to the HILT, and Hitsugaya who is indignant about... everything....... god this is what we DESERVED

History of Vulcan Flash
Vulcan Flash is the 13th Demon Slayer Squad of Akras Summoners’ Hall. Along with the 11th and 12th squads, it was created shortly after the failed Ishgria Recon incident in an effort to diversify the ranks for future Summoners, as the 4th-10th squads were retired out of respect for their fallen captains.
Its founding captain was Rowena Adelia Cor, a well-known subordinate of the Elder Summoner Grahdens. She took office at the age of 21, the youngest in Akras history at the time. The name “Vulcan Flash” came from her father Byron’s signature technique, in honor of his memory. Its notable members came to be the Vice-Captain Aiden Jerome Blazburn Jr., Alastor Ramirez, and Cari Margaret Blackfield.
Vulcan Flash was also called “Lucky 13″ due to defying the expectations born from superstitions surrounding the number that the squad would not last very long. This would still be true even after the Dawnsmarr incident that claimed the lives of the captain, vice-captain, and one member.
In the wake of Rowena’s, Aiden’s, and Cari’s deaths, Alastor chose to take up the mantle as Vulcan Flash’s next captain. Alastor has kept the squad standing strong over the years since the tragedy and withstanding the coming and going of many a Summoner.
After the defeat of the Fallen God Zevalhua, the woman who would become The Legendary Summoner, Renata Diés Crux, joined its ranks after years of serving as an instructor for the Regular Army recruits and proving her merit as a Summoner. She is Rowena’s long-lost daughter and joined after learning about her mother’s death.
Vulcan Flash’s popularity began to grow from there, both due to Renata’s students following after her and her heroic reputation from her fights against the Fallen Gods and later, the Ishgria Demon Lords and the Sealed Gods from other worlds. It skyrocketed after a combination of her confirmation as the Pioneering Division’s Co-director, being named “The Legendary Summoner” for her feats, succeeding Alastor as captain upon his retirement, and ultimately being named an Elder Summoner.

aiko bon “Profile Interview” Chapter 4 (2/3)
Tumblr media
ーHow DID people view you in high school?
aiko: I was everyone’s wing man. (laughs) Every single time we had some kind of event in middle school, I was always busy behind the scenes, helping people out. My teacher even called me “The Matchmaker”. People were grateful, but it sorta just… extended into high school, too. I helped so many couples get together.
ーYou played Cupid?
aiko: I don’t remember any of it, but my friends have been telling me that a lot lately. One guy told me I’d given him a letter, so I asked, “What’d I write?” Apparently I’d written up a profile of a girl I was trying to match him up with, and when I gave it to him, I said, “At least read SOME of this-- she’s a great girl!” They ended up getting married and have kids together now.
ーYou already hit it out of the park, getting them to date by complimenting her!
aiko: Nah, I’m pretty sure I had feelings for him too, but I just let it be. (laughs) I don’t remember doing that at all though. When he told me I gave it to him, I was like, “Hoo boy, what did I write…”
ーDid you bring your friends together like that often?
aiko: Yup. Sometimes I even had to come between them. I don’t remember the specifics, but one of my friends wanted to ask someone out using the ‘Aiko method’. You see, back then we had this way of asking people out called the ‘Aiko method’. Like, one girl would say, “I’m gonna give the Aiko method a try today!” And we’d all go, “You are? Well, good luck!” (laughs)
ーWhat was the method?
aiko: Well, thinking about it now, it was really cold-hearted. Honestly, it’s really embarrassing. You’d ask them out by making it a quiz, sort of. You say, “Mind if I quiz you on something? Answer with either ‘yes’ or ‘no’, ‘kay? I like you. Would you go out with me? Yes or no?” The nice thing about that was it was really easy to answer. Like, doesn’t matter which one you pick, just say yes or no!
ーSounds like it makes it really easy to confess to someone.
aiko: It did! But one time when I asked that and a guy said, “Flower circle!” I remember thinking, “Boy, that was lame.” (laughs) Like, “Hey, that wasn’t one of the options! I said to pick ‘yes’ or ‘no’!” (laughs)
ーWas your method pretty popular for a little while?
aiko: Eh, just so-so. Everyone used to ask each other out after school festivals and field days. Suzumushidera was also kinda popular for that. It’s this temple in Kyoto where you can hear the bell crickets chirping all year round. Doesn’t matter when you go, you’ll hear them chirping. If you go there, you’ll also see Jizo statues wearing straw sandals. Supposedly if you put an ofuda between your hands and say your name and your address, the Jizo will come to your house so he can grant you a wish. I went there too-- everyone did. Like, “You got an ofuda? *whips it out* Well of course I do!” (laughs) All the girls had ofuda charms from Suzumushidera.
ーHow did you know about that place?
aiko: I heard about it from my relatives. When my cousin got sick once, I went to this one temple to make a wish because they told me I should. I started going there after that. Then I started hearing about that temple in magazines a bunch. “Hayashi Mariko gives it an A+!” That sort of thing. The admission fee was also cheap. It was only about 300 yen. And they gave out tea and sweets.
ーDid you go there often?
aiko: I actually only went there 3 times, because it took me about an hour and a half by bus and train to get there from my house. It wasn’t something I could just hop on over to after school because it was a temple, so it closed at like 3 or 4’o’clock. I went there on my days off.
ーDid your wishes come true?
aiko: They did! They were all wishes about love, and all three came true. The people who worked at the temple told people that you shouldn’t wish to be married if you didn’t even have a boyfriend, though. “It won’t come true,” they said. “There’s an order to everything.” That’s why they told people who didn’t have boyfriends to wish for a boyfriend first. After you found a boyfriend, you could wish to be married. “You can wish to Jizo all you want to be married when you don’t have a boyfriend and don’t even like anybody, but it won’t come true!” they said. Which is true! It’s funny ‘cause it makes perfect sense. I spread it around school because I thought it was nice.
ーDid you take leadership roles in class and among your friends a lot? Like, were you the one to take initiative and start doing something instead of just doing whatever everyone else was doing?
aiko: Yeah. I don’t think I was really ever the type to cling to other people. I got chocolates from other girls ever since I was in middle school, too. It was sorta like I had my own fan club or somethin’. (laughs) In the cafeteria I’d tell one of the underclassmen something like, “Oh, I love this magazine. The horoscopes are so interestin’ to read every month, y’know?” Then the following month, I’d see them standing in the hallway reading the latest issue!! Sometimes it really surprised me. People would wish me happy birthday and I’d be like, “How’d you know today was my birthday?” They’d say, “‘Cause I’m in your fan club!” and I’d go, “Wait, what!?”
ーWhat were you like back then? Were you a tomboy? Or like an older sister to them?
aiko: I’m not sure. I was full of energy though. I guess tomboyish… ?
ーWere you ever on the student council or school festival committee?
aiko: I was vice president of the student council during my last year of high school. I wasn’t terribly interested in stuff like that; my teacher asked me to be in it. “If I’m gonna be in this, I’m gonna make it fun.” So then I invited all my friends to join too. The whole student council consisted of my friends.
ーYou basically took over the whole student council. (laughs)
aiko: I guess so. (laughs) The president was the captain of the volleyball team, my best friend was secretary, and the other vice president was on the basketball team. They were all my friends. We spray-painted stars and bears and stuff on the walls of the student council room. One of my teachers said it’s all still there to this day. “We left the stuff you drew. We’ve got some of your history here,” they said. (laughs) So yeah, I was on the student council. I was also the leader of the pep squad during field day.
ーIsn’t it usually a guy who leads the pep squad?
aiko: I was the only girl. (laughs) That was decided on my way home from swim lessons. “You’re the squad leader, aiko,” they said. I went, “Whaaaat?! Really!?” Every person on the pep squad was part of one of the sports teams: one guy was the volleyball team captain, another was the basketball team captain, and we also had the volleyball team setter in the squad. I looked so tiny next to all these tall, big-boned dudes. I just said, “Yaaay!”
ーMost guys on pep squads wear their school uniform jackets. What costume would a girl wear?
aiko: Some of the classes at my high school wore the school uniform jackets, but some of the classes sort of just made up their own outfits. The girls in my class wore tennis coats and aprons, which kind of made us look like cute, frilly waitresses. The guys wore blouses and bowties. I got to wear a pretty gorgeous apron as pep squad leader. (laughs) It had SO many frills. We were the purple team so everyone was wearing purple clothes except for me-- I was in white. I was the smallest one on the squad, but I’m pretty sure I was the loudest. Like, loud enough that I honestly think I annoyed the people living in the apartments next to our school. (laughs) Well, I did my part the best I could, and the purple team won some medals. I was also the torch bearer at that field day. It was the student council vice president’s job. There’s a picture of me in the yearbook lighting the torch with my eyes half-open. (laughs) How bad. I was also super tan in that picture. It was a yearbook though, so that picture’s everywhere. (laughs)
ーYou were student council vice president, the torch bearer, AND you were on the pep squad. I know you hate that picture, but sounds like you had a lot of other pictures in the yearbook too.
aiko: We were all in our senior year by then too. No one paid it any mind because we were all busy with entrance exams by then.
ーSchool festivals being what they are, I’m sure you had your hands full with that too.
aiko: You betcha I was! All three years, our class performance was something I came up with. In 10th grade we did a ‘haunted house’. In 11th grade we did ‘Antarctica’.
ーWhat did you guys do to make it “Antarctica”?
aiko: We made the classroom real cold. We got a bunch of dry ice, made some penguins. Then we filled a bucket with water and had everyone put their feet in it. The first person to pull their feet out of the bucket lost the game. To give everyone a taste of what it’s like in Antarctica. (laughs) In 12th grade, we had the revolutionary idea of doing a karaoke box.
ーWhere’d you rent the karaoke machine from?
aiko: We borrowed it from Acom.
ーAt any rate, sounds like you were a pretty lively and social kid back in high school.
aiko: I guess I was. One of my friends once told me a long time ago, “You know aiko, I’ve been watchin’ you this whole time. I watched you the whole time you were walking from the shoe closet to the back gate.” Apparently I’d talked to 18 people in that span of time. (laughs) It was just about 20 meters from the shoe closet to the back gate.
ーThat calculates to about 1 conversation with someone per meter.
aiko: See? He said I’d talked to 18 different people. “You talked to that many people in that short of a distance before you walked through the gate. I really respect you for that,” he said. I remember thinking, “Huh, it really is important to me to greet all these people one by one.” I had a lot of acquaintances back then.
ーSo were you the type of person who could get along with just about anybody?
aiko: There were a lot of people I hated with a passion though. You know, people I wouldn’t mind never talking to for the rest of my life. But yeah, I was pretty social overall. I was a sensitive social butterfly.
ーWhen you say sensitive, do you mean a lot of things bothered you?
aiko: Yeah. When one of my close friends felt down, I always wondered what I did. I’d be totally convinced I’d done something, and that they were mad at me.
ーEven if you were sensitive about things like that, I still wouldn’t describe you as a shy or timid person though.
aiko: That’s true for when I was with my friends at like, school. I did all of that introspective thinking when I got back home to my house. When I was at home, I spent almost all my time holed up in my room and didn’t really leave. As outgoing as I was at school, once I was back in my room I was basically a shut-in.
ーWhich version of you would you say is your natural, true self?
aiko: Hm, both of them, now that I think about it. I don’t have to force myself and work really hard to be one or the other. I love being alone, but I’d also go nuts if I were alone all the time. On the flip side, I really enjoy being around people, but being around people all the time would be a huge pain. It’s so taxing when I don’t get a good balance between the two. That’s never changed about me. When I’m at home, I’m super low-key. I walk around listening to my Walkman even though I’m home alone. I could play my music out loud since no one else is around, but I do laundry and stuff while listening to music on my Walkman instead. (laughs)
ーIt must shock people when they find out you’re a certain way at home or out in public when they didn’t know that about you before. I bet they say, “Oh, I didn’t know this side of you!”
aiko: I’m not sure! I was so simple and naive back in middle school, though. I never ever cried in front of my aunt and always acted so cheerful, no matter what happened, so maybe nobody knew my other side. I probably grew up a lot faster because I was put into my relatives’ care at a relatively young age. I’m an only child too, so I’ve always spent more time in adult situations than I did with children my age. With all the stuff I had going on, I sorta had to be that way. I don’t mean this in a weird way, but I had to be conscious of the face I was putting on for other people, I think. Once I got into high school, it was just normal for me to be a completely different person at school than I was at home.
ーWhich version of ‘aiko’ are you when you’re with someone you like?
aiko: Good question… I don’t think I’ve ever dated anybody that I’ve showed the ‘yin’ parts of myself to. Things always ended before I could stop pretending because for the most part, I haven’t dated anyone for that long. The longest I ever date someone was about 3 months.
ーI feel like most guys you’ve been in love with felt the same way back though.
aiko: They haven’t though, they haven’t! I’ve spent WAY more time in one-sided loves, all things considered. There’s also been quite a few times where I just couldn’t bring myself to act on my feelings. I didn’t ask out the guy I’d been in love with since I entered high school until I was in my senior year… We broke up before we even really understood each other at all. (laughs) He was in my grade, and I’d always had a crush on him. I still sorta liked him even after we broke up. After that we got along pretty well as friends, but it was always a bit of a sore spot for both of us. It’s only recently that he’s coming out to me about all of this. In fact, he didn’t start calling me “Aiko” until recently. I was like, “And we’ve known each other HOW many years now!?” (laughs)
ーSo what DID he call you for 10 years? (laughs)
aiko: He used my last name or just said, “Hey you.” (laughs) Really made me wonder, y’know? He’s the type that never talks about himself either. It wasn’t until recently that he started talking to me about a lot of different things. It took him 10 years for both of us to finally admit that we had a lot of fun together back then. It took 10 years to be able to say that.
ーSo does that mean he’s a pretty good friend of yours now?
aiko: Yeah. But he’s overseas now. I asked him why he left, and he told me he’s on a journey to find himself. (laughs) As always, I ain’t really sure what he meant by that. That’s so like him though.
ーBy the way, did the high school you attended have a uniform?
aiko: We had one, but I didn’t really ever wear it. The uniform was a navy blue blazer with one row of buttons, and pleated skirt, kind of, that had four pleats. I used to wear this skirt that wasn’t part of the uniform. I bought it in Umeda and it looked pretty good with my school uniform. I wore sweaters and hoodies with it. Well, usually a hoodie. I’ve pretty much always loved wearing hoodies… I still do! Whenever I got demerits I would always say, “It’s the hoodie, isn’t it?” (laughs) I was always saying, “I’m already at 28 points, can I just wear the hoodie?” I’ve always loved hoodies, but I totally fell in love with them in high school.
ーSo... you basically went to school wearing street clothes that LOOKED like the school uniform.
aiko: Yup. (laughs) I bought a black-ish skirt that went nicely with it, and in the winter I wore sweaters and hoodies over top of it. You were supposed to wear a white blouse with it too, but I wore a pale blue one with it. I made small additions to it while following the general ‘style’ of the uniform as much as I could.
ーDid your school not have a very strict uniform dress code?
aiko: ...Well yeah, they did, and it was annoying. Every time they found out I’d broken the dress code, they pinched me on my stomach. Just wearing a beanie in the wintertime made everyone flip out. People kept asking me if I was okay. Our high school was strict enough that they made me take off any clothes that obviously weren’t part of the uniform, though. I tried to avoid them getting mad at me for that at least, although sometimes they noticed from far away and would yell, “Hold on, what are you WEARING!?” and I’d run away. “Oh, n-no, this is the uniform. I’m wearing the uniform,” I’d tell them. “Mine’s in the wash! Yeah, in the wash.” You could’ve sworn my uniform was always in the washing machine at home. (laughs)

Netball report - October 2021
An exciting first half term for the netballers!  All started with pre-season training before the school term started with over 150 girls taking part in three days of training, also welcoming our new coaches Miss Kgasi and Miss Paice, both bringing a wealth of coaching and playing experience to our DC teams.  Early morning, lunchtime and after school sessions then began in earnest using our shiny new DC bright blue post covers, colourful new nets and hundreds of branded DC balls - we were ready!
Lots of the outside leagues started in September so girls were able to get back to outside fixtures and we were fortunate as Dubai College Academy to play senior games against Hurricanes in our beautiful sports hall.  As the term progressed we were delighted to see three of our senior girls selected for the European Championships in Gibraltar, congratulations to Kate (Y12), Charlie (Y11) and Sophie (Y12) who travel with the senior team to this international tournament in October, best of luck girls, we are all so proud of you!  We also had girls selected into the U17 UAE squad who are training for their Championships in March, well done and good luck to you too girls; Jemma (Y11), Noorulain (Y11), Chloe (Y9) and Molly (Year 9).
Following on from our Wednesday evening fixtures we were delighted to be part of the 'test' fixture against JESS on 30th September.  Ten netball teams travelled to the Ranches to play indoors over two rounds. The girls and staff were beside themselves with anticipation - our first full fixture in over a year!  Sticking to COVID protocols throughout, the girls played some fantastic netball across all age groups U12 - U19 with the 1st VII taking a comprehensive win against our local rivals, overall 8 wins from 10 but most of all a fantastic opportunity for our girls to play, watch and umpire!  We look forward to many more matches - as coaches we were just so happy to watch the girls play.
There is a lot to look forward to in the next half of term with Netball playing alongside the Rugby at the Dubai College 7s Tournament on the 26th and 27th November and of course the Dubai Sevens during the weekend of 2nd to 4th December with the U13 and U15 Teams playing in the Youth Sevens on Thursday 28th October and 11th November with the final to be held at the main event.
And finally, we were delighted to announce our DC Netball leadership team for this season.  Captain Charlotte with Vice Captains Lauren and Zainab - role models both on and off the court and all three looking forward to leading their players into competition.

@taradreemurr a réagi à votre photo “How many squads did he go to”
when he was promoted to vice captain then he was the 6th officer of 11th division and as I know he was in the 5th before (but tbh I just started the manga haven't read it)
I didn’t remember the whole 6th officer of the 11th division, but yeah Aizen said a little after that moment that he took all three (Renji, Hinamori and Kira) under his Division to keep an eye on them to try and manipulate them (and sent Renji away because he was “the most troublesome” :’D )
I’ve still got to read the manga too so :’)
