Netball DC7s and Emirates Dubai 7s
An exciting finish to Term 1 with Dubai College 7's and Emirates Dubai 7's competitions for our netball teams.  All teams have trained early morning, lunchtimes and after schools with our DC1,2,3 teams also having a regular Wednesday evening fixture in preparation for the big event as well as their 1-2-1 sessions for individual technical work.
The DC7's weekend gave our U12, U13 and U14A and B teams an opportunity to play against Dubai schools, with 8 teams in each division.  The sound of excited netball chatter in our SPACE sports hall and outside courts was well overdue.  The tournament was played as a round robin giving plenty of opportunity to schools to play all their girls.  Tight games were witnessed across both venues with U11 and U12 teams battling it out in the air con of the sports hall and MUGA and the U13 and U14 teams playing on our outside courts next to the rugby tournament - a great weekend of sport.  DC managed to take Runners Up spot in the U12's and won the U13 and U14 age groups.

Next up was the Emirates Dubai Sevens where our DC1,2 and 3 teams were fortunate enough to be sponsored by NEXUS Insurance Brokers - this gave all three squads new dresses and warm up tops.
The U13 and U15 teams had already played knockout rounds on two previous Thursday nights and both were successful in reaching their finals to be played at the Emirates Dubai 7's on the opening day.  The U13's opened the billing with a narrow loss in their final after some nailbiting play, congratulations to them on reaching their final and lots learned along the way.  The U15's again played a back and forth game but managed to secure a fantastic win to become U15 Youth Sevens Champions - a brilliant achievement for this team.
DC1,2 and 3 began their Dubai 7's adventure on the first day with some excellent performances, showing just how much depth we have here at DC.  At the end of the Friday round robin games we had DC1 and DC2 through to the Semi Finals of the Youth Open Competition, but unfortunately against each other!  DC3 had battled hard and made it through to the Semi Final of the Aspire Competition too - fantastic results for all three teams.  The DC1 v DC2 game ebbed and flowed with outstanding play from both teams, skill and strategy, sweat, blood and tears, but at the final whistle the DC1 team had made the final to play DESC 1.
DC3 performed brilliantly in their semi-final and set up a final of their own against Capital, an Abu Dhabi team.   The girls played out of their skin, giving their all after three days of tough competition, unfortunately they lost by one goal - such a shame - but thoroughly deserving of a runner up spot in a highly contested division.
DC1 v DESC 1 was a wonderful display of Dubai youth netball with physicality, skill and strength, each team leaving their all on the court.  DC1 went up from the start and didn't ever look back finishing with a strong 10-5 score - they were YOUTH OPEN CHAMPIONS for the first time ever!  Lots of congratulations and hugging was followed by a presentation of the impressive trophy to Charlotte Clarke (Captain).  These results were the result of many hours of training as well as strength and conditioning by our Head of Performance Justin Walsh.  The schedule to the Emirates Dubai Sevens included early mornings, lunchtimes and after school practices as well as commitment to fixtures against the best senior players in Dubai.  Girls spent time on performance analysis to ensure they were prepared, they had discussions on nutrition, hydration and fueling.  These girls were well prepared and as the old adage goes 'hard work pays off'.  The coaches were so proud of the achievements of all teams, they deserved their accolades and it is exciting to look to the future to see just what these girls could achieve.

Rhianne Quigley, Becki Quigley, Sophie Hember and Deb Jones were also competing for their respective teams at the Dubai Sevens with Ms Jones taking the Open title with Phoenix - so good to see our coaches playing, role models all of them.
Selection for teams for DASSA leagues in January is currently in progress and we look forward to the fixtures starting in the second week back of Term 2.
Exciting news in that U13, U15 and U17 squads will also be chosen next term to play in the World School Games at Loughborough University, UK,  from 28th June - 3rd July - an opportunity to test ourselves against international competition.
Also wishing the U17 UAE squad all the best as they embark on the European Championships in March in the Isle of Man - we await final selections but fingers crossed we have a few DC reps in there!  Good luck girls!
Wishing everyone a very restful and happy Christmas and New Year!  Many thanks to the fantastic netball parents who offer such support and encouragement to our DC girls - family is everything - DC family is everything.

Sport update - Term 1
This term has seen the re-commencement of DASSA leagues and competitions for the first time since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, which has been a joy to both students and staff alike.
Basketball
Our Under 16 & 19 teams have got off to a flying start in the leagues and have produced some amazing performances in their respective leagues. Currently, our Under 19A Girls team have won the Division 1 DASSA league, whilst both U16 and 19A Boys teams are playing league deciders this week. Fingers crossed!
Cross Country
The first DASSA Cross country event of the year took place at The Sevens in early November with over 500 participants. Following a wonderful afternoon’s racing from numerous students, Dubai College were victorious in 5 out of the 6 age groups and came runners up in the sixth.
Football
Our Boys and Girls Football squads returned to competitive action in their respective leagues and we were able to enter a multitude of B and sometimes C teams also, which reflects the ongoing popularity of football at the College. Our junior squads have set the pace with the Under 12A girls being DSSA league winners and the Under 14 squads have also played some outstanding football.
Netball
Although the DASSA leagues do not commence until Term two, there has been plenty of netball played during the last half term. The inaugural Dubai College netball 7s took place at the end of November, which contained the brightest talent from the primary schools and younger secondary school ages. After an outstanding day’s play, our Under 12 team were narrow runners up, whilst our Under 13 and 14 squads were tournament winners.
Our netball success continued at the Emirates Airline Dubai 7s with the Under 13 squad finishing runners up and our Under 15 squad finishing tournament winners. Our senior squads also enjoyed huge success, with DC3 finishing Aspire League runners up, DC Open Youth semi finalists and DC1 being crowned as Open Youth Cup winners, having played some outstanding netball throughout the weekend.
Rugby
Rugby 7s with both genders has been very popular this term with both non-contact and contact versions of the game flourishing.
The Girls Under 13 and 15 squads finished narrow runners up at the inaugural DC Girls Rugby 7s with many outstanding performances, whilst the under 19 Girls were unbeaten and were crowned Cup winners.
The boys squads also enjoyed a successful Dubai College Rugby 7s with all squads making a final or winning a trophy. Our Under 12 boys were runners up, the Under 13s Plate winners, Under 14s runners up and Under 16s finishing as Cup winners.
The Under 19 Boys also played some excellent rugby at the Emirates Airline Dubai 7s and finished as runners up following two days of gruelling rugby.
Rounders
Our Under 19 Rounders squad continued their title as the College’s most successful sports squad by completing another unbeaten season. The team finished winners of the DASSA Yellow league.
Swimming
Following a pre-season friendly against ASD, we were able to host our inaugural school swimming gala at our new swimming pool. Despite the long break from the pool, DC Swimming continues to thrive with A and B squads competing this Term. DC finished the gala as the highest ranked school against their Division 1 competitors, with stand out performances from Ashleigh (U13) Jodie, Gracie, Iman, Yuchen and Li Wei (U19) and Amaan Siddique (U15).
To summarise, a fantastic first term’s return to sport and we cannot wait for the Spring Term! 😊

Emirates Dubai 7s
We just want to say a big thank you to our sponsors NEXUS for supporting us again this year. It is so important for our boys and school to get the support and thank you for making this an unbelievable experience for our players.  Thank you for all your support over the last 4 years and hope many more to come.
The Under 19 Boys played some excellent rugby at the Emirates Airline Dubai 7s. We started our preparations in September and worked very hard on our skill levels, set pieces, strength and conditioning and structures to be ready and be part of the biggest 7s rugby tournament in world rugby.
We won all our pool games on the Friday with some great 7s rugby. Skill levels were outstanding and after day one, we felt positive that we could challenge for the Cup.
We had a great ¼ final and then played BSAK in the semi-final at 3pm on the Saturday.
We played our best rugby of the weekend winning 33-5. It was a great team performance with all the boys playing some of the best rugby over the weekend.
The final was against our old rivals DESC on a packed main pitch at 6pm. We just came short on this occasion, but all our players had an unbelievable experience and will be back with our alumni supporters to cheer on the new players next year.
Thank you boys for all your hard work and great attitude throughout the last three months.

Rugby is back!
Rugby is back after 19 months and how great it is to see boys and girls playing competitive rugby again.
Dubai College played friendly matches against JESS on Thursday 4th November. It created a buzz around the school with boys and girls looking forward to representing their school in competitive fixtures. It was a great afternoon seeing rugby back on all the school pitches. Our U13A and B, U14A and B and U16A and B and our U19 teams played some excellent rugby on the afternoon and the skills shown were outstanding.
It was the first competitive fixture for our U19 boys who worked very hard during September and October in preparation for the Emirates Dubai 7s. A big thank you to JESS for making it a brilliant day for school rugby again. So good to see the boys enjoying every moment.
On Saturday, 6th November BSAK turned up for a friendly fixture against the U19 boys and U19 girls.  This was the first ever fixture for Dubai College U19 girls in a contact 7s match and what an exciting day for Dubai College. The girls played some excellent rugby winning both games. Well done girls!
The boys were all very keen to get another fixture after the positive start on Thursday against JESS. They won both games and it was good to see how their confidence grew individually but also as a team.

24 hour Triathlon
Starting on Thursday 18th November at 10am we started our 8 hour swimming relay, with 76 participants rotating every 20-40 minutes we managed to cover a massive 69.7km. This equates to swimming to Marjan Island in RAK from Dubai. We also had two of our swim squad members swim +60 lengths in their 20 min time slot, which proves they are part fish!
The cycling leg kicked off at 6.00pm with a DC community spin class alongside DC students eating up the miles on our Watt Bikes. We managed to cover 438.6km on the bike, this is excluding the distances we would have covered in the spin class and the parents that participated on the spin bikes!! #TeamDC would have made it all the way to Muscat if we had been on the roads!
The runners lined up to start at 02.00am bright eyed and full of energy! We had 51 runners participate and amassed 183.9km in 8 hours! This massive effort would have taken us from Dubai to Musandam!
Well done to everyone who took part and to FDC for supplying us with breakfast.

World Triathlon Para Cup in Portugal
Congratulations to Michael Salisbury who represented GB in the World Triathlon Para Cup, in Alhandra, Portugal.
Tumblr media
This photo shows the face of a fierce competitor who after a sprint finish managed to run the fastest time of the day across all ambulant categories.
Mchael placed 5th overall in the PTS5 paratriathlon classification despite a difficult swim, where he veered off course due to poor visibility and choppy water, costing him valuable time.
Michael was delighted with his result and the experience. He finished higher than he’d expected despite the poor swim and was pleased with how his bike time compared to the rest of the field.
He will be spending the winter trying to work on his relative areas of weakness, but hopefully he has strengthened his chances of being selected for further events.
Michael was selected to compete having previously won gold at both the British Paratriathlon Championships and the British Triathlon Grand Final within his classification this summer. #dcproud

European Netball Tournament
The Europe Netball competitions were back underway last weekend in Gibraltar after a two year hiatus due to COVID. The Open UAE netball team (the UAE Falcons) had only been in training since June 2021 ready for their chance of competing in the Europe Open Challenge Competition. Final selections took place at the end of August 2021 and included Dubai College staff and students; Charlie Year 11, Kate and Sophie, both Year 12 students were selected as part of the squad along with Head Coach Deb Jones (Deputy Head: Pastoral) and Assistant Coach Lucia Sdao (Director of Netball).
This was the first Europe Netball Open tournament held since May 2019 and what a netball weekend to remember for the UAE. Having competed only twice before in the Open Challenge competition in May 2018 and May 2019, the team had placed 3rd and 4th respectively. As a result, the UAE Falcons entered the tournament weekend as underdogs given our world netball ranking of 37. The hosts, Gibraltar (world ranked 32), were first up against us on Friday afternoon. Having battled through the well contested and at times, physical game, the Falcons steadily piled on the pressure each quarter. The victory was a comfortable one with a 15 goal margin separating our teams; a 49-34 victory for the Falcons in their first outing in two years was a sweet one indeed and one which set us up for the plays we put out on the court for the rest of the tournament. Charlie gained her first international cap and a starting 7 place at the Gibraltar game and that win made her debut even more special.
Sea recovery after the game and a good night’s sleep allowed the squad to reform for day two of the competition which meant facing the reigning champions, Isle of Man (world ranked 23) and Switzerland (no current rank). The IOM pushed the Falcons all the way to the final whistle but the Falcons putting out a solid second quarter, meant the IOM were unable to capitalise effectively on their final push. A winning score of 59-52 put the Falcons at the top of the Europe Netball table and for the first time in the history of entering the competition, the winner’s trophy was in sight.
The third game against Switzerland saw Kate and Sophie both earn starting 7 places and their first international caps. Having set a target of 20 goals per quarter, the squad outperformed their initial benchmark to take the win at the final whistle, 93-31; Charlie scored 86/96 attempts – no mean feat for a 15 year old. It was also a valiant effort from a young developing Swiss side who showed much promise in parts of the game and no doubt have a bright future ahead of them.
On the final day of competition, Malta came out hard but the Falcons were once again too strong, winning out 57-33. Charlie not only earned her fourth cap of the tournament but had also played 16 quarters over the weekend and celebrated her 16th birthday. What a day to remember! Kate and Sophie also took to the court in the Malta game and played exceptionally well in their respective positions. Being crowned tournament champions was certainly in the 3 year plan for the UAE Falcons but one which took us by surprise so early in our campaign.
So what’s next the squad? Further building of technical ability and tactical know how, more S&C and defending our title in May 2022 in the Isle of Man are certainly the first goals. In the meantime, active recovery and a short time away from the game before training resumes in November.
We are fortunate to not just take talent but to build talent within our community; the netball programme at Dubai College will certainly help our many aspiring international netballers to continue to flourish.

Rugby update
Rugby training is going really well this term and we are delighted to be back playing full contact rugby during our ECA’s. We are in a good position, can’t wait for the fixtures to start and are currently working very hard delivering three pitch sessions per day for each age group (morning 6:30-7:15am, lunch 12:25-1:05 and after school from 3:35-4:45.)  Every age group also have two strength and conditioning sessions in our excellent SPACE facility.
We are very proud of the numbers in our girls’ rugby and now have full U13, U15 and U19 girls rugby teams all playing at our prestigious DC7s tournament.  We are delighted that KHDA has now  confirmed that the forthcoming DC7s can go ahead - very good news for rugby and all sports in schools.
We want to congratulate Megan, Femke, Annabelle, Jodie and Tara for their unbelievable achievement in winning the west Asia championship with the UAE U18 girls. Congratulations also to Epeli, our newly appointed sport/rugby coach, who played for the UAE 7s team and won the Asia/Qatar tournament last weekend.
A big thank you to all the players for their hard work and great attitude during training. We are all very excited to play our first school game in our DC kit and we are looking forward to our October half term rugby camp (Sunday 17th – Tuesday 19th October). The day will kick off with breakfast together at 7:30am followed by pitch, strength & conditioning and pool recovery sessions on all 3 days.  All this training is geared to get us ready for all the school tournaments leading up to the prestigious emirates Dubai 7s in the first weekend of December.
We hope to see all the parents next to the field supporting and enjoying all the games very soon.
